The afocal apposition optics of butterfly eyes was examined from both a geometrical optics and a wave optics point of view. We used several different species of butterfly but put special emphasis on a common Australian nymphalid,Heteronympha merope. From the anatomy of the retina, the optics of isolated components of the eye and the ophthalmoscopy of the intact living eye we derived the following.
1.  The proximal part of the crystalline cone behaves as a powerful lens which, according to our measurements of optical power, turns the complete optical system into an afocal telescope with an angular magnification of 6.4 (inHeteronympha). The rhabdom tip lies in the exit pupil of the telescope and is imaged into the cornea with a magnification of 9.1 (in the same species).
2.  Using light reflected from the eye's tapetum, we studied the waveguide mode phenomena of the rhabdom. Different butterflies showed either one, two or three waveguide modes, depending on the rhabdom diameter. The mode patterns were observed at four different optical planes: at the cornea, at infinity, at the back focal plane of the corneal lens — which, for this measurement, was optically neutralised — and at the plane of the deep pseudopupil.
3.  During light adaptation the closure of the pupil caused the modes to disappear in sequence, starting with the highest order. The behaviour of the fading modes indicates that the pupil acts by absorption rather than by a change of refractive index around the rhabdom.
4.  The modes were used to measure the waveguide parameter of the rhabdom, from which its refractive index was deduced to be 1.36.
5.  The distinction between near-field and farfield versions of the mode patterns provided further evidence in favour of an afocal optical system.
Two different interpretations of the butterfly optical system are discussed and we present a hypothesis to explain how both afocal apposition and refracting superposition optical systems evolved in insect eyes.  相似文献

1.  The ommatidia of the butterfly Papilio have a fused and tiered rhabdom. The distal tier of the rhabdom is made up of four distal photoreceptors (R1–4), whereas the proximal tier is made up of four proximal (R5–8) and one basal photoreceptor cell (R9).
2.  We first confirmed by light microscopy that the ommatidia of Papilio are not twisted, i.e. have the same spatial organization all about the longitudinal axis. The polarization method, previously applied to the distal tier, hence is applicable to identify the photoreceptor location from the peak angle of the polarization sensitivity.
3.  We determined the polarization and spectral sensitivity of in total 109 proximal and basal photoreceptors in the lateral looking eye region. All of the photoreceptors were either green or red type, most of which fall into three classes as judged by the peak angles of the polarization sensitivity: around 40°, 150°, and 180° (= 0°) with respect to the dorso-ventral axis. The first two classes are formed by the proximal photoreceptors with straight microvilli oriented at the average angle of 39° (R6, 8) and 144° (R5, 7) respectively, and the third is formed by the basal photoreceptors R9 with straight microvilli oriented at 180° (= 0°). The mean polarization sensitivity (PS = maximal sensitivity/minimal sensitivity) was about 2.
4.  75% of the proximal and 48% of the basal photoreceptors were of the red type.
5.  A single ommatidium of Papilio appears to contain two to four types of spectral receptors.

1.  Paramecium bursaria was stimulated by a light spot of 10–15 m diameter, and the photosensitive site was searched by recording responses in swimming behavior and in membrane potential.
2.  Local stimulation to the anterior half of the cell caused an avoiding response.
3.  Stimulation to the cells deciliated by ethanol treatment elicited a depolarization of the membrane potential.
4.  Local stimulation to the anteroventral portion elicited a depolarization, but stimulation to the dorsal side induced no change in the membrane potential.
5.  The action spectrum of depolarization elicited by local stimulation to the anteroventral surface showed two main peaks at 420 nm and 560 nm, corresponding to those of light stimulation of the whole cell.
6.  It is concluded that a photosensitive site exists on the anteroventral surface ofParamecium, in particular within the oral groove of the cell. This local photosensitivity is discussed with respect to the mating reaction.

1.  The actions of GABA on three classes of visual interneurons in crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, medulla externa are examined. The effect of GABA on the visual response is compared to GABA's action on agonist-elicited responses purported to mediate the visual response.
2.  GABA produces a shunting type of inhibition in medullary amacrine cells which is associated with a small depolarization (Figs. 2, 3), a large increase in input conductance (Gn) and a reversal potential close to rest (Fig. 4). GABA is a potent antagonist to the depolarizing action of acetylcholine (ACh) (Fig. 5).
3.  GABA depolarizes dimming fibers (Fig. 2), and the response is mediated by an increase in Gn (Fig. 6). GABA antagonizes the light-elicited IPSP and the hyperpolarizing action of ACh (Fig. 7).
4.  Sustaining fibers (SF) do not appear to have GABA receptors but GABA inhibits the excitatory visual input pathway to the SFs (Fig. 8). Conversely, the GABA antagonist, bicuculline, potentiates the SF light response (Fig. 9).
5.  GABA has at least three different modes of antagonist action in the medulla: i) Increased conductance and depolarization in dimming fibers and medullary amacrine neurons; ii) Decreased chloride conductance in tangential cells; and iii) An inhibitory action on the visual pathway which drives SFs.

1.  Morphological correlates of circadian changes in eye sensitivity to light measured electrophysiologically were sought in the cockroach, Leucophaea maderae. Cross sections of ommatidia removed at subjective midday and subjective midnight on 3 successive days from roaches held under constant darkness (DD) at 25 ± 2 °C were examined using a transmission electron microscope for morphological differences related to sampling time.
2.  The temporal difference in submicrovillar cisternae (SMC) area appeared to exhibit a circadian rhythm, however, the amplitude of this temporal difference measured under DD was less than that observed under LD 1212 conditions. SMC areas characteristic at nighttime were achieved at subjective midnights but the area diminished only partially toward the daytime state on subjective middays.
3.  Rhabdom area remained constant and the daily rhythm of screening pigment granules (SPG) arrangement about the rhabdom was not observed under conditions of constant darkness.
4.  Results of this study indicate that a pacemaker(s) actively influences the change in the SMC toward the nighttime state, whereas, the change toward the daytime state results from a passive mechanism that possibly could be accelerated by light.

3DFS is a 3D flexible searching system for lead discovery. Version 1.0 of 3DFS was published recently (Wang, T.; Zhou, J. J. Chem. Inf. Comput. Sci., 1998, 38, 71–77). Here version 1.2 represents a substantial improvement over version 1.0. There are six major changes in version 1.2 compared to version 1.0.
1.  A new rule of aromatic ring recognition.
2.  The inclusion of multiple-type atoms and chains in queries.
3.  The inclusion of more spatial constraints, especially the directions of lone pairs.
4.  The improvement of the query file format.
5.  The addition of genetic search for flexible search.
6.  An output option for generating MOLfiles of hits.
Besides the above, this paper supplies:
1.  More query examples.
2.  A comparison between genetic search and Powell optimization.
3.  More detailed comparison between 3DFS and Chem-X.
4.  A preliminary application of 3DFS to K+ channel opener studies.

1.  Coupling mechanisms between ciliary beating and the membrane potential in Paramecium were investigated under voltage clamp applying intracellular pressure injection of cAMP, cGMP and Ca-EGTA buffer. Ciliary responses following step changes in membrane potential were recorded by high-speed video on magnetic tape.
2.  Injections of cAMP and cGMP up to millimolar concentrations caused no detectable changes in the frequency voltage relationship. A minor effect was that the ciliary reorientation towards the anterior cell end (reversal) tended to be inhibited with depolarization up to 10 mV.
3.  Injection of Ca2+ into the cell clamped at the resting potential caused a transient anteriad ciliary reorientation and a simultaneous increase in the beating frequency.
4.  Injection of EGTA (to buffer Ca2+ below 10–8 M) was ineffective in relation to frequency for several minutes. After this time, hyperpolarization- and depolarization activated frequency responses of EGTA-injected cells were increasingly inhibited. The ciliary reorientation following depolarization was not affected by EGTA.
5.  A posterior contraction of the cell diameter was noticed upon membrane hyperpolarization. The contraction coincided in time with the increase in beating frequency.
6.  The results support the view that the voltage-dependent augmentation of the ciliary beating rate is not directly mediated by an intracellular increase in either cAMP or cGMP.
7.  The role of Ca2+ as intracellular messenger in the ciliary and somatic compartments is discussed.

In the rift valley (North-East of France/South-West of Germany), the Rhine runs freely for 300 km from South to North. The absence of natural obstacles allows the development of a very regular profile of the river. We have therefore an opportunity to study very gradual modifications of the alluvial forest communities of the fluvial corridor from upstream to downstream, according to the gradual evolution of the ecological factors, related to slope decrease and hydrological modifications. We describe, from Basel to Mainz:
1)  modification of dynamic processes in the forest communities such as successional sequences or sylvigenetic mosaïcs of the terminal stages.
2)  modification of species richness.
3)  reduction of species diversity.
4)  simplification of the forest stratification.
5)  modification of efficiency of the biogeochemical cycling.
6)  ecological vicariances.
7)  modification in species behaviour.

1.  Muscles of the posterior cardiac plate (pcp) and pyloric regions in the stomach of Squilla are innervated by motoneurons located in the stomatogastric ganglion (STG). The pattern of innervation of various muscles in these regions was determined using electrophysiological methods.
2.  The dilator muscles are singly or doubly innervated by the pyloric dilator neurons (PDs). The constrictor muscles are singly or doubly innervated by the pcp neuron (PCP) or the pyloric neurons (PYs). These muscles are sequentially activated by pcp-pyloric motor outputs produced by the PCP, PY, and PD. All muscles can generate an all-or-nothing spike.
3.  The constrictor muscles generate spikes followed by depolarizing afterpotentials which lead to a sustained depolarization with repetitive spikes. The PYs can entrain rhythmic spike discharges of these muscles.
4.  The spike of muscles remains unchanged by bath application of tetrodotoxin (10-7 M) to suppress neuronal impulse activities, but it is blocked by Mn2+ (10 mM).
5.  The constrictor muscle isolated from the STG displays an endogenous property of spontaneous membrane oscillation that produces a train of spikes. Brief depolarizing or hyperpolarizing stimuli can trigger or terminate an oscillatory potential, respectively, and reset the subsequent rhythm.
6.  The possible functions of myogenicity under the control of discharges of motoneurons in the pyloric constrictor neuromuscular system are discussed.

Culture studies with healthy and virus-infected isolates of Ectocarpus siliculosus, Feldmannia simplex and F. irregularis gave the following results:
–  Virus particles are produced in deformed reproductive organs (sporangia or gametangia) of the hosts and are released into the surrounding seawater.
–  Their infective potential is lost after several days of storage under laboratory conditions.
–  New infections occur when gametes or spores of the host get in contact with virus particles. The virus genome enters all cells of the developing new plant via mitosis.
–  Virus expression is variable, and in many cases the viability of the host is not impaired. Infected host plants may be partly fertile and pass the infection to their daughter plants.
–  Meiosis of the host can eliminate the virus genome and generate healthy progeny.
–  The genome of the Ectocarpus virus consists of dsDNA. Meiotic segregation patterns suggest an intimate association between virus genome and host chromosomes.
–  An extra-generic host range has been demonstrated for the Ectocarpus virus.
–  Field observations suggest that virus infections in ectocarpalean algae occur on all coasts of the world, and many or all Ectocarpus and Feldmannia populations are subject to contact with virus genomes.

The caudal photoreceptors (CPRs) of crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) can trigger walking and abdominal movements by their response to light.
1.  In a restrained, inverted crayfish, illumination of A6 evoked a CPR discharge followed by leg movements and bursting from the abdominal tonic flexor (TF) motoneurons. Intracellular electrical stimulation of a single CPR at high frequency (80 Hz) evoked similar responses.
2.  Responses only occurred when a single CPR axon was driven at 60 Hz or more and outlasted the stimulus.
3.  CPR stimulation also excites the pattern-initiating network (Moore and Larimer 1987) in the abdomen.
4.  The axon of the CPR projects from ganglion A6 to the brain. Terminal branches occur in the subesophageal ganglion and the brain. A small descending interneuron is dye-coupled to CPR in the subesophageal ganglion.
5.  In animals with cut circumesophageal connectives, the CPRs can evoke walking and the abdominal motor pattern.
6.  The relationship of the abdominal motor pattern to walking is altered by restraint and/or inversion. In freely moving crayfish, the cyclic abdominal motor pattern is only observed with backward walking. In restrained, inverted crayfish, the motor pattern occurs with both forward or backward walking.

2.  In the pre-adult stage protein nitrogen (PN) conversion efficiency was high whereas in the Post-adult stage non-protein nitrogen (NPN) conversion efficiency was high.
3.  Lower temperature (20°C) was not congenial for PN conversion.
4.  Higher temperature favoured PN conversion for smaller fish but NPN for larger fish.

1.  Some units in the lateral ocellar nerves of the locust,Locusta migratoria, are influenced transsynaptically by the activity of ascending fibres in the thoracic connectives and therefore may be efferent to the afferent ocellar system.
2.  A variety of sensory inputs excite the ocellar nerve units, including illumination of the compound eyes, active and passive movement of the wings, wind stimuli to the thorax and sound.
3.  Most ocellar interneurons are influenced transsynaptically by electrical stimulation of the cervical connectives. L-neurons are depolarized and the components of their response to a rectangular light pulse are changed in amplitude. Only a few S-neurons could be examined. All of them were excited directly or indirectly.
4.  The descending ocellar interneurons (DN's) are influenced by stimulation of the contralateral connective, perhaps via efference to the ocellus or to ocellar L-cells.

Cannibalism in teleost fish   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1.  Cannibalistic behaviour in fish is reviewed here for the first time.
2.  Cannibalism has been recorded in 36 out of 410 teleost families according to the published literature, but is considered to be more widespread than this. Finding examples of cannibalism is not difficult, and it may be more interesting to look for taxa in which the behaviour does not take place.
3.  The families that have provided the most information include the Engraulididae, Esocidae, Poeciliidae, Gasterosteidae, Percidae and Cichlidae.
4.  Cannibalism has been classified into seven types, depending on life-history stage, age difference between cannibal and prey, and whether or not they are related.
5.  Although in captive populations, cannibalism tends to increase with increasing density and decreasing food availability, its role in population regulation has not been unequivocally demonstrated in any wild population, and obtaining the necessary data presents a formidable challenge to fish ecologists.
6.  Cannibalism is of some economic importance in aquaculture, but its impact can be reduced relatively easily, by frequent grading to reduce size variability.
7.  The main proximate advantage conferred by cannibalism is assumed to be nutritional. In an ultimate sense the behaviour may have evolved as a particularly effective competitive strategy.
8.  Finally, it is considered that cannibalism deserves more attention from fish biologists. Investigations, however, should recognize the different types of cannibalistic interaction, and, in particular, should explore the different implications of kin and nonkin cannibalism

1.  Under laboratory conditions complete development of H. sparsutum is shown within a temperature range of-0.7°C to +8°C. Constant temperatures above 10°C are lethal to the population. Larval growth (L1 to L5) is strictly temperature-dependent between-0.7 and +3.5°C, but slightly temperature compensated between +3.5 and +8°C.
2.  Rate of egg production is highest at an average daily temperature of-0.7°C.
3.  The sixth larval stage (L6) can be subdivided into a wandering and feeding period of about 40 days (at 7.3°C) and a following prepupal resting stage (PPR) with a high variability in duration, even at one and the same temperature, which ends with pupation.
4.  Entrance into this resting stage seems to be independent of environmental changes and can occur at every time of the year. Termination of the PPR depends upon light stimuli received during the entire larval period.
5.  Readiness for pupation exists when the photoperiod in the PPR exceeds that during hatching of first larva. A decreasing photoperiod during PPR triggers pupation in prepupae of various age.
6.  The diapause stage seems to be a primary factor synchronizing the life cycle with seasonal changes in the environment.

The effects of temperature, over the range 10–40 °C, on properties of locust (Schistocerca gregaria) ocellar L-neurones and of their interconnections have been investigated. At cooler temperatures, a small change in temperature has a larger effect than an equivalent change at warmer temperatures. An increase in temperature leads to the following:
1.  A decrease in input resistance, which typically halves in value as temperature increases from 15 °C to 35 °C. When synaptic transmission between photoreceptor cells and L-neurones is blocked with cobalt, temperature still affects L-neurone resistance. The membrane time constant also decreases, but the resting potential is unaffected.
2.  An increase in the sizes of rebound spikes, which are produced when hyperpolarizing pulses end. Above 35 °C, the maximum size of rebound spike is smaller than that at cooler temperatures.
3.  A decrease in the latency to response to light, and an increase in the speeds of the transient responses to changes in light.
4.  A decrease in the latency of transmission at both excitatory and inhibitory synapses between L-neurones.
5.  At excitatory synapses between L-neurones, an increase in the postsynaptic current. This is compensated by a decrease in postsynaptic membrane resistance, so that there is little effect on the size of the postsynaptic potential.
6.  At inhibitory synapses between L-neurones, a decrease in the time for the postsynaptic potential to reach its peak. The time for recovery of transmission at inhibitory synapses is unaffected by temperature.

1.  Tethered flies (Musca domestica) walking on an air-suspended ball show a spontaneous response to the e-vector of polarized light presented from above, i.e. a slowly rotating e-vector induces periodic changes in the flies' turning tendency. Suitable control experiments exclude the possibility that the response is elicited by intensity gradients in the stimulus (Figs. 1 and 2).
2.  Presence of the e-vector response in both white and UV light and its complete absence in yellow light equally support the concept that the specialized dorsal rim area of the compound eye with its highly polarization sensitive UV receptors R7marg and R8marg mediates polarization vision in flies (Fig. 3).
3.  E-vector orientations inducing no turning response additional to the fly's inherent turning tendency are either parallel (avoided e-vector) or perpendicular (preferred e-vector) to the animal's body axis (Figs. 1 and 4).
4.  Considering the fanlike arrangement of the microvillar orientations of R7marg and R8marg in the dorsal rim area of the eye of Calliphora and Musca, a stabilizing function of polarization vision in controlling the flight course is suggested and discussed in the context of results from other behavioural studies.
