Nomograms have been prepared whereby the respiratory exchange ratio may be derived from the concentrations of carbon dioxide and oxygen in expired gas and oxygen consumption from the volume and oxygen concentration of expired gas; they apply only to patients breathing room air. The nomogram for the respiratory exchange ratio has an error of less than 0·01, which is the limit of visual discrimination on the nomogram. The nomogram for oxygen consumption has an error of standard deviation 7·73 ml/min. This error may be substantially reduced by excluding cases with a respiratory exchange ratio outside the range 0·70-0·93. Under these conditions the maximum error was 10 ml/min, which is acceptable for a wide range of clinical purposes.  相似文献

We have developed a gas exchange simulation system (GESS) to assess the quality control in measurements of metabolic gas exchange. The GESS simulates human breathing from rest to maximal exercise. It approximates breath-by-breath waveforms, ventilatory output, gas concentrations, temperature and humidity during inspiration and expiration. A programmable motion control driving two syringes allows the ventilation to be set at any tidal volume (V T), respiratory frequency (f), flow waveform and period of inspiration and expiration. The GESS was tested at various combinations of V T (0.5–2.5 l) and f (10–60 stroke · min−1) and at various fractional concentrations of expired oxygen (0.1294–0.1795); and carbon dioxide (0.0210–0.0690) for a pre-set flow waveform and for expired gases at the same temperature and humidity as room air. Expired gases were collected in a polyethylene bag for measurement of volume and gas concentrations. Accuracy was assessed by calculating the absolute and relative errors on parameters (error = measured−predicted). The overall error in the gas exchange values averaged less than 2% for oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide output, which is within the accuracy of the Douglas bag method. Accepted: 4 June 1998  相似文献

In resting conscious dogs physiological dead space was calculated using the Bohr equation and measurements of arterial and mixed expired carbon dioxide tension. Whenever dogs inhaled carbon dioxide mixtures (5-10%) that had normal or low oxygen concentrations, the calculated dead space became negative. This paradox was based on the fact that the mixed expired carbon dioxide tension in resting hypercapnic dogs. Under these circumstances carbon dioxide was produced from the lung as measured by gas analyses and blood analyses. By the lung as measured by gas analyses and blood analyses. By reasoning this implies that "alveolar" carbon dioxide tension was higher than pulmonary venous carbon dioxide tension. The negative carbon dioxide gradient persisted at 14 days of chronic hypercapnia and reverted to normal within 10 min of breathing air after chronic hypercapnia. These findings suggest that the exchange of carbon dioxide in the lung cannot be explained solely on the basis of passive diffusion.  相似文献

The given paper represents formulae for calculation of oxygen consumption and of carbon dioxide formation in a microbial culture obtained from corrected measuring data of gas balance measurements. Basic relations between these measuring data the respiration quotient RQ were derived. The influence of measuring error to the accuracy of determination of oxygen consumption and of carbon dioxide formation at the analysis of gas concentrations and of air flow is discussed. It is shown that the determination of carbon dioxide formation rate is possible in many cultivation regimes with better accuracy than the determination of oxygen uptake rate.  相似文献

The coupled conservation of mass equations for oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen are written down for a lung model consisting of two homogeneous alveolar compartments (with different ventilation-perfusion ratios) and a shunt compartment. As inspired oxygen concentration and oxygen consumption are varied, the flux of oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen across the alveolar membrane in each compartment varies. The result of this is that the expired ventilation-perfusion ratio for each compartment becomes a function of inspired oxygen concentration and oxygen consumption as well as parameters such as inspired ventilation and alveolar perfusion. Another result is that the "inspired ventilation-perfusion ratio and the "expired ventilation-perfusion ratio differ significantly, under some conditions, for poorly ventilated lung compartments. As a consequence, we need to distinguish between the "inspired ventilation-perfusion distribution, which is independent of inspired oxygen concentration and oxygen consumption, and the "expired ventilation-perfusion distribution, which we now show to be strongly dependent on inspired oxygen concentration and less dependent oxygen consumption. Since the multiple inert gas elimination technique (MIGET) estimates the "expired ventilation-perfusion distribution, it follows that the distribution recovered by MIGET may be strongly dependent on inspired oxygen concentration.  相似文献

The evolution of air-breathing in land crabs is associated with a progressive shift in the primary site of respiratory gas exchange from the diffusion-limited gills used for water-breathing, via a simple 'cutaneous' lung surface to the perfusion-limited, invaginated lung described in the mountain crab, Pseudothelphusa garmani. The reduced diffusion limitation over the lungs facilitates oxygen transfer from air to the tissues at lower ventilation rates but is associated with accumulation of carbon dioxide. A potential respiratory acidosis is buffered by the respiratory pigment haemocyanin and by elevation of haemolymph bicarbonate levels. These changes parallel those described in vertebrates but air-breathing crustaceans maintain relatively low carbon dioxide levels in the haemolymph, either by retaining an aquatic route for its elimination over the reduced gills or by blowing it off across the lung. Maintenance of low carbon dioxide levels may be associated with a limited capacity to buffer against an acidosis due to low levels of circulating haemocyanin (i.e. crustaceans lack red blood cells). This may ultimately limit their survival in air as an acidosis will reduce oxygen transport due to a marked Bohr effect on haemocyanin. The primary role of an invaginated lung may be to reduce rates of water loss in air.  相似文献

Tidal ventilation gas-exchange models in respiratory physiology and medicine not only require solution of mass balance equations breath-by-breath but also may require within-breath measurements, which are instantaneous functions of time. This demands a degree of temporal resolution and fidelity of integration of gas flow and concentration signals that cannot be provided by most clinical gas analyzers because of their slow response times. We have characterized the step responses of the Datex Ultima (Datex Instrumentation, Helsinki, Finland) gas analyzer to oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide in terms of a Gompertz four-parameter sigmoidal function. By inversion of this function, we were able to reduce the rise times for all these gases almost fivefold, and, by its application to real on-line respiratory gas signals, it is possible to achieve a performance comparable to the fastest mass spectrometers. With the use of this technique, measurements required for non-steady-state and tidal gas-exchange models can be made easily and reliably in the clinical setting.  相似文献

The absorption of manganese by beetroot tissue is shown to bepartially inhibited by the presence of carbon dioxide. Preliminarytreatment of well-washed tissue slices with carbon dioxide alsoproduces, after placing them in manganese solutions, an inhibitionof absorption for a time similar to that shown by tissue sliceswhen first excised from stored roots. This paper reports a new system for the continuous measurements of respiratory gas exchange in ventilated subjects. It involves mixing some of the inspired gas with all of the expired gas and withdrawing the mixture at a constant rate through a dry gas meter that measures the flow. The inspired gas and expired gas mixtures are sampled and O2 and CO2 concentrations measured with a paramagnetic gas analyzer and a capnograph, respectively, to an accuracy of 0.01%. Evidence is presented to confirm the necessary stability and sensitivity of these instruments. It is possible to use the system with high inspired O2 concentrations, with ventilators where there is incomplete separation of inspired and expired gas, and in the presence of intermittent mandatory ventilation, positive end-expiratory pressure, and continuous airway pressure. The system was compared with the N2-dilution method and with the collection of expired gas in a Douglas bag in dog experiments and with patients in the intensive therapy unit. Excellent correlation between these methods was found in all circumstances.  相似文献

The rate of carbon dioxide exchange in both light and darkness by detached tobacco leaves placed at various oxygen concentrations was measured by an Infra-Red CO2 Analyzer and a Clark oxygen electrode. It was observed that during illumination oxygen had two different effects. One was to stimulate carbon dioxide evolution and the other to inhibit carbon dioxide absorption. Concentration of carbon dioxide at compensation point was found to be a linear function of oxygen concentration and this has been explained as due mainly to an increased evolution of carbon dioxide. Such an evolution during illumination has been called photorespiration. Increased concentrations of oxygen also had a stimulating effect on the magnitude of the initial post-illumination burst of carbon dioxide in darkness, but no effect on the subsequent steady rates. These data have been explained as due to the suspension of regular respiration in darkness and its replacement by a different process, tentatively called photorespiration. A second effect of oxygen was to reduce the efficiency (called “carboxylation efficiency”) with which a leaf was able to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.  相似文献

This study analysed the changes in electromyographic (EMG) activity of the vastus lateralis, biceps femoris and gastrocnemius muscles during incremental treadmill running. The changes in EMG were related to the lactate and ventilatory thresholds. Ten trained subjects participated in the study. Minute ventilation, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide expired and the fraction of oxygen in the expired gas were recorded continuously. Venous blood samples were collected at each exercise intensity and analysed for lactate concentration. The EMG were recorded at the end of each exercise intensity using surface electrodes. The EMG were quantified through integration (iEMG) and by calculating the mean power frequency (MPF). The iEMG measurements were characterized by a breakpoint in the vastus lateralis and/or gastrocnemius muscles in eight of the subjects tested. However, the results indicated that blood lactate concentrations had already begun to increase in a nonlinear fashion before the iEMG breakpoint had been surpassed. Consequently, the occurence of the lactate threshold cannot be attributed solely to the change in motor unit recruitment or rate coding patterns demonstrated by the iEMG breakpoint. The ventilatory threshold was shown to be a far more reliable and convenient noninvasive predictor of the lactate threshold in comparison with EMG techniques. In conclusion, the EMG measurements used in this study (i.e. iEMG and MPF) were not considered to be viable noninvasive determinants of the aerobic-anaerobic transition phase in treadmill running.  相似文献

A custom oxygen analyzer in conjunction with an infrared carbon dioxide analyzer and humidity sensors permitted simultaneous measurements of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor fluxes from the shoots of intact barley plants (Hordeum vulgare L. cv Steptoe). The oxygen analyzer is based on a calciazirconium sensor and can resolve concentration differences to within 2 microliters per liter against the normal background of 210,000 microliters per liter. In wild-type plants receiving ammonium as their sole nitrogen source or in nitrate reductase-deficient mutants, photosynthetic and respiratory fluxes of oxygen equaled those of carbon dioxide. By contrast, wild-type plants exposed to nitrate had unequal oxygen and carbon dioxide fluxes: oxygen evolution at high light exceeded carbon dioxide consumption by 26% and carbon dioxide evolution in the dark exceeded oxygen consumption by 25%. These results indicate that a substantial portion of photosynthetic electron transport or respiration generates reductant for nitrate assimilation rather than for carbon fixation or mitochondrial electron transport.  相似文献

The oxygen production of a photosynthetic gas exchanger containing Chlorella pyrenoidosa (1% packed cell volume) was measured when various concentrations of carbon dioxide were present within the culture unit. The internal carbon dioxide concentrations were obtained by manipulating the entrance gas concentration and the flow rate. Carbon dioxide percentages were monitored by means of electrodes placed directly in the nutrient medium. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the nutrient medium which produced maximal photosynthesis was in the range of 1.5 to 2.5% by volume. Results were unaffected by either the level of carbon dioxide in the entrance gas or the rate of gas flow. Entrance gases containing 2% carbon dioxide flowing at 320 ml/min, 3% carbon dioxide at 135 ml/min, and 4% carbon dioxide at 55 ml/min yielded optimal carbon dioxide concentrations in the particular unit studied. By using carbon dioxide electrodes implanted directly in the gas exchanger to optimize the carbon dioxide concentration throughout the culture medium, it should be possible to design more efficient large-scale units.  相似文献

An instrument has been developed for the simultaneous measurement of carbon dioxide excretion (VCO2) and oxygen uptake (VO2). This instrument, the Nutrimeter, gives these breath-averaged measurements continuously without having to determine respiratory flow rate, perform timed spirometric gas collections, or determine absolute CO2 or O2 concentrations. It can be used on ventilated or nonventilated patients in long- and short-term studies. VO2 is determined via the replenishment technique. VCO2 is determined via a new technique, absorption-titration, described here. Bench test results of VCO2 measurements show a standard error of the estimate (SEE) +/- 0.591% of full scale (500 ml/min) and maximum single point error (MSPE) of +/- 3.54% over a 100--350 ml/min range. VO2 measurements show SEE +/- 0.518% of full scale (1,000 ml/min) and MSPE +/- 2.42% over a 100--450 ml/min range. In 31 human clinical trials the Nutrimeter was compared with the open-circuit spirometric collection and micro-Scholander analysis technique. VCO2 measurements show SEE +/- 2.208% and MSPE +/- 10.57% over 135--315 ml/min. VO2 measurements show SEE +/- 1.134% of full scale and MSPE +/- 9.54% over 170--360 ml/min. Response time is 60 s optimally for step changes in VO2 (0--90% of steady-state value), 90 s for VCO2.  相似文献

Studies of the arterial blood gas tensions and pH in 21 children during 24 acute attacks of asthma showed that all were hypoxic on admission to hospital, and in 10 there was evidence of carbon dioxide retention. Cyanosis, invariably present when the So2 was below 85%, and restlessness in patients breathing air were the most reliable indices of the severity of hypoxia. There were no reliable clinical guides to the Pco2 level. Conventional oxygen therapy in tents (25–40%) did not always relieve hypoxia, and in three cases the administration of oxygen at a concentration of 40% or over failed to produce a normal arterial oxygen tension. Uncontrolled oxygen therapy may aggravate respiratory acidosis, and three of our patients developed carbon dioxide narcosis while breathing oxygen. The necessity for blood gas measurements in the management of severe acute asthma in childhood is emphasized.  相似文献

Use of infrared analyzers to measure water vapor concentrations in photosynthesis systems is becoming common. It is known that sensitivity of infrared carbon dioxide and water vapor analyzers is affected by the oxygen concentration in the background gas, particularly for absolute analyzers, but the potential for large errors in estimates of stomatal conductance due to effects of oxygen concentration on the sensitivity of infrared water vapor analyzers is not widely recognized. This work tested three types of infrared water vapor analyzers for changes in sensitivity of infrared water vapor analyzers depending on the oxygen content of the background gas. It was found that changing from either 0 or 2% to 21% oxygen in nitrogen decreased the sensitivity to water vapor for all three types of infrared water vapor analyzers by about 4%. The change in sensitivity was linear with oxygen mole fraction. The resulting error in calculated stomatal conductance would depend strongly on the leaf to air vapor pressure difference and leaf temperature, and also on whether leaf temperature was directly measured or calculated from energy balance. Examples of measurements of gas exchange on soybean leaves under glasshouse conditions indicated that changing from 21% to 2% oxygen produced an artifactual apparent increase in stomatal conductance which averaged about 30%. Similar errors occurred for `conductances' of wet filter paper. Such errors could affect inferences about the carbon dioxide dependence of the sensitivity of photosynthesis to oxygen. Seasonal variation in various thermoregulatory, metabolic and ventilatory parameters was examined for southern brown bandicoots (Isoodon obesulus fusciventer) from a Mediterranean climate near Perth, Western Australia. There was significant seasonal variation over the four annual seasons at thermoneutrality (Ta=30 degrees C) in body temperature, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, respiratory exchange ratio, total evaporative water loss, wet and dry thermal conductance and tidal volume but not mass, ventilatory frequency, minute volume or oxygen extraction efficiency. Only carbon dioxide production and respiratory exchange ratio showed an annual pattern that was significantly related to season, with both being significantly higher in winter, presumably as a result of greater and higher quality food availability.  相似文献

The contribution of ruminal CO2 to gas exchange measurements and ventilation was determined in four rumen-fistulated Hereford steers at rest and during exercise. The calves were exercised at 1.4 and 2.2m X s-1 under three treatments: 1)full rumen with fistula sealed, 2) full rumen with fistula open, and 3) empty rumen. Measurements also were made at rest while flushing the empty rumen with either 100% N2 or a mixture of 50% CO2-50% N2. O2 consumption, CO2 production (Mco2), and ventilation were measured by collecting the expired gas. Absorption across the ruminal epithelium during rest increased Mco2 by 3%, whereas absorption and eructation together increased Mco2 by 15%. The respiratory exchange ratio (R) was significantly different among the three treatments at rest, but no differences were observed in R among the treatments during exercise. No changes were observed in minute ventilation among the three conditions, but a decrease in respiratory frequency and an increase in tidal volume occurred when the rumen was empty. These changes in ventilatory pattern may have been due to a decrease in body temperature when the rumen was empty. When the empty rumen was flushed with 50% CO2, Mco2 was increased 21% over the value observed when flushing with 100% N2. CO2 of fermentation origin is added to the expired gas by both eructation and absorption and has a significant effect on R in the resting animal, but no effect on R during exercise.  相似文献

The calculation of many derived fermentation variables such as the respiratory quotient (RQ) and mass transfer coefficient (K(L)a) requires the differences between the molar percentages of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the fermentor inlet and exit gas, called the %OUR and %CER. Noise and bias in %CER data is of order that in the exit gas carbon dioxide analysis. However, the relative amount of noise in the %OUR is one to two orders of magnitude greater than the noise in the raw oxygen analyses because the %OUR is calculated as a small difference between two large quantities. The noise in the %OUR is white with a Gaussian amplitude probability distribution of absolute standard deviation 0.0145. A chi-square filter of the %OUR data is shown to considerably improve the quality of the calculated RQ and K(L)a for a fermentation of Streptomyces clavuligerus. A closed gas exchange system has been designed for connection to the Hewlett-Packard programmable calculator controlled data acquisition system to provide a complete process of measuring and control. The system enables routine measurements of photosynthetic and dark respiration rates at different irradiances and different carbon dioxide and oxygen concentrations and leaf temperatures, and also a simple and rapid automatic control of irradiance according to the actual photosynthetic rate.  相似文献
