Levels of infestation by the suctorian Ephelota sp. were determined in Antarctic krill taken in the north-eastern region of the Scotia sea, close to the island of South Georgia. Individuals caught in summer between 2002 and 2004 were measured for body length, eye diameter, moult stage, sex, sexual maturity and number of suctorian parasites. All krill samples were found to contain at least two modal size-classes and the complete range of maturity- and moult stages. Sample analysis for the different characters identified moult stage as an important determinant of infestation by Ephelota sp., with 66% of those about to moult (pre-moult individuals) being infested compared with 0% of post-moult individuals. Multiple Correspondence Analysis also identified a strong link between age and degree of suctorian infestation with large-eyed (and hence old) males having very high numbers of suctorian bodies. Moulting is costly in terms of energy and vulnerability, but it is believed that krill moult at relatively high rates throughout their life to facilitate growth and “shrinkage”. Here, we demonstrate that the control of external parasitism is also a major advantage of moulting at high frequency. The capacity of krill to maintain a high moult rate decreases with age, leading to older krill enduring higher parasitic loads.  相似文献

Summary Growth of the Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, is not easily determined from net catches nor from laboratory experiments. Therefore, in support of these methods, a phenomenological model was constructed which in its present state describes the growth of a single krill specimen under periodically limiting food conditions with summer seasons of variable lengths. Published data of krill body length vs. age and of the annual cycle of primary production of algae in the Drake Passage were used to formulate equations and to calculate growth curves. At 1,000 days after hatching, the model predicts a body length of 63 mm, growth being delayed by 380 days compared with constant, optimal feeding conditions. Final length, weight and time delay are related to the amount of food supplied and compared with published population growth curves.  相似文献

Krill (Euphausia superba) carapace measurements (length and width; mm) collected from plankton tows in the South Shetland Islands (SSI), Antarctica are used to test the generality of a common discriminant function developed to reconstruct krill length frequencies in Antarctic fur seal diets for the area surrounding South Georgia (SG). Total length and sex ratio of krill in the SSI were overestimated by 5.6 and 154%, respectively, when the SG allometric equations were applied to 3 years (2003–2005) of data. These errors arise and increase as a result of krill population dynamics, specifically recruitment that contributes large proportions of immature krill, misclassified as males by the SG discriminant function. We develop sex-specific regression models based on separate discriminant functions that provide significantly better discriminatory power. However, our analysis indicates that reconstructions of krill sex ratio and length composition in the ocean environment are less reliable in years when the ratio of immature to mature krill is high. For the SSI area, five out of 14 years (35.7%) surveyed (1992–2005) had proportions of immature to mature adult krill ≥ 0.50.  相似文献

耳石重量在年龄组间重叠较少,大小相近的个体,年龄大的,即生长慢的耳石重量比年龄小的,即生长快的大,不同龄组之间耳石重量有显著差异(P<0.05),按年龄组在耳石重量与相应的体长作图,可初步判断观测年龄的可靠性,分析耳石重量频率分布能分离出体长相近,年龄不同的个体,其结构与耳石年轮观测的基本一致,耳石重量与年龄呈显著线性正相关(P<0.05),用耳石重量与年龄关系估算的年龄从耳石上直接读取的年龄无显著差异(P>0.05),文中对耳石重量直接用于确定鱼类年龄的可能性作了分析和探讨。  相似文献

Length–weight relationships (LWRs) of five fish species commonly associated with Antarctic krill fishery, were determined. Samples were collected with Chinese krill trawler (codend mesh size 2 cm) in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean from January to August 2016. Data on LWRs and the relationships between weight and standard length as well as weight and total length of those species were updated for the database of FishBase. Those data on fish species derived from Antarctic krill fishery will be very helpful in understanding the interaction between krill fishery and the associated fish community.  相似文献

Velocity measurements were performed for the flow field generated by tethered krill Euphausia pacifica. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was used to measure the velocity field in vertical planes aligned with the krill body axis. The krill generates a narrow jet-like flow behind and below the pleopods (roughly 25° below horizontal). The volume of fluid moving at greater than 10% of the maximum velocity near the pleopods is roughly 18 times larger than the volume of the krill. Thus, the hydrodynamic disturbance occupies a significantly larger region than the animal body. Other krill, sensing the flow disturbance, may take advantage of the flow induced by a neighbor to locate a mate or to draft for efficient propulsion.  相似文献

 The diet of lactating female Antarctic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella at South Georgia was investigated during the pup-rearing period (January/March) of 1991–1994. Antarctic krill Euphausia superba was the main prey item, occurring in 88% of all scats (n=497), whereas fish occurred in 47% and squid in 5% of all scats. There was considerable intra- and inter-annual variation in the characteristics of krill taken by fur seals. The distribution of krill sizes taken suggests that fur seals are not actively selecting particular sizes of krill and, therefore, that the krill in the diet reflects the krill available around South Georgia. The absence of group 3 krill (44–48 mm in length) in the South Georgia area, as indicated by their absence in the diet of seals, is suggested as a possible reason for low availability of krill and the subsequent reproductive failure among krill predators. The frequency of occurrence of fish was much higher than in previous studies; the pattern of fish consumption showed a consistent seasonal pattern in 3 of the 4 years studied. Of the total number of the myctophid Protomyctophum choriodon, the most numerous fish taxon, 98% were taken between early February and the middle of March. Champsocephalus gunnari and Lepidonotothen larseni agg., which both feed on krill, dominated the fish component of the diet outside this period and together constituted 94% of the total estimated biomass of fish consumed. The intra- and inter-annual variability in the diet of Antarctic fur seals emphasise the need for diet studies to be conducted during the entire pup-rearing periods of several years. Total length ( L T) and its inter annual variation of walleye Sander vitreus from Oneida Lake, New York, based on 51 years (1950–2000) of data for ages 1 to 7 years were analysed. Growth increased over time at young ages, did not change at intermediate ages and decreased at old ages. Total length at age increased over time to age 4 or 5 years, but was stable at older ages. Principle component analysis was used to study the pattern of variations in annual L T increments among years. More than 92 and 91% of inter annual variability in growth was described by the first three principal components for males and females, respectively. The first principal component was a general indicator of annual growth at all ages, but was dominated by annual growth at intermediate ages. The second and third principal components represented contrasts among yearling L T, yearling growth and growth at older ages. Therefore, changes in the three stage‐specific parameters, yearling L T, yearling growth and asymptotic L T, explained most of the variance in observed growth. Using these three stage‐specific parameters for the von Bertalanffy growth function facilitated interpretations of growth comparisons.  相似文献

Vertebrae from 250 Bagrus meridionalis from the southern end of Lake Malawi were used for age and growth determinations. There is a close correlation between ages determined from length frequency data and ages obtained by back-calculation of the lengths when vertebral rings arc laid down. The rings are laid down annually, probably during the breeding season. Females grow slightly faster than males, the difference being in the order of 1–2 cm/year in the early stages. Recruitment to the trawl fishery takes place in the third year of life. Both sexes breed for the first time at the end of their fourth year. There is a much greater mortality in the male population after 40 cm in length.  相似文献

Ginkgo trees of four different ages were selected as experimental material. Telomeric restriction fragment (TRF) lengths, as an indicator of telomere length, were determined for different tissues by Southern hybridization analysis. Statistical analysis was performed to compare two aspects of TRF length. By determining TRF lengths for different tissues for each age, a latent tendency was found. TRF length varied from short to long in these tissues in the order microspore < embryonal callus < leaf < branchlet. TRF lengths for leaf tissue and branchlet tissue were dissimilar for female and male mature trees, although this difference between TRF lengths for the two sexes was not statistically significant. Evaluation of TRF lengths for each tissue for trees of all four ages revealed TRF lengths increased with age to some extent. Different rates of change were found for leaf tissue and for branchlet tissue, although tendencies to increase were not linear for either. Finally, a simple mathematical model was formulated to describe the relationship between telomere length and age for Ginkgo biloba L.  相似文献

The effect of the ice edge on Antarctic krill abundance, swarm parameters, distribution and migration, were investigated using acoustics. Two parameters, overall abundance and inter-swarm distance were found to increase with distance from the ice edge, while the number of swarms per unit distance decreased. Swarm dimensions, length and thickness do not seem to depend on proximity of ice. Krill near the ice-edge undergo diurnal vertical migration with a periodicity of 12 hours and an amplitude of about 6 m. Juvenile krill of 31 mm were dominant in the area investigated.  相似文献

Age and growth of the black seabream Acanthopagrus schlegelii (family Sparidae) from the northern South China Sea (NSCS) were studied by reading growth rings in sectioned sagittal otoliths. Ring formation frequency was determined to be annual by using marginal increment analysis. The von Bertalanffy growth function parameters were estimated as: L = 43.7 cm LS; K =0.22 year; t0 = ?1.59 years. Functional males are significantly younger than functional females, with sexually transitional individuals between the modal ages of males and females supporting protandry in this species. Males become sexually mature within 1 year and 50% age at sex change is at 2 years. The maximum age recorded for both males and females sampled was 9 years which is lower than for conspecifics elsewhere and may reflect high fishing pressure in the study area when compared with conspecifics in other areas or could reflect latitudinal effects. Otolith mass was significantly and positively related to age, providing a cheap and quick alternative method for approximating age. Acanthopagrus schlegelii is a relatively fast‐growing and rapidly maturing species attaining a similar asymptotic length to conspecifics. A need for fishery management is indicated to protect both young juveniles and older adults, especially females, to increase reproductive output and safeguard fishery production.  相似文献

Ontogenetic, inter-annual and regional variations in diet were investigated for mackerel icefish, Champsocephalus gunnari, in three successive summer seasons around South Georgia. Stomach contents from 2239 C. gunnari (130–560 mm total length) were examined. A bootstrapping technique was used to calculate confidence intervals for an index of relative importance of prey categories (% IRIDC). Diet varied significantly between years and age classes but there was little regional difference in diet. In general, diet was dominated by krill, Euphausia superba and by the amphipod Themisto gaudichaudii. Smaller (younger) fish tended to prey on a higher proportion of T. gaudichaudii and small euphausiids such as Thysanoessa sp. and took smaller quantities of E. superba. In a season of poor krill availability (summer of 2003–2004) the proportion of krill in the diet, stomach fullness and fish condition (indicated by length–weight relationships) were significantly lower than in the other summer seasons. A large reduction (>80%) in the estimated annual (2005) biomass of the C. gunnari stock directly followed the season of poor krill availability. This decline was largely because of mortality of 2+ and 3+ fish, which were more krill dependent than 1+ fish. Younger fish appear to have survived, leading to an increase in the estimated population biomass in 2006.  相似文献

1. In ecological studies on freshwater crayfish, determination of basic population parameters is often complicated by the lack of a suitable age estimation method.
2. Previously, lipofuscin age pigment in the olfactory lobe cell masses (OLCM) of short‐lived tropical crayfish has been used for accurate age determination. Here we present the first test of this method on a longer‐lived, temperate species, the signal crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus .
3. Confocal fluorescence microscopy and image analysis of histological sections were used to quantify OLCM lipofuscin in a reference sample of Swedish P. leniusculus from several known year‐classes, reared under naturally variable temperature conditions. Lipofuscin concentration was linearly associated with age ( r2 = 92.4%) and produced much more accurate age estimates than conventional body size‐based procedures.
4. A model derived from the crayfish of known‐age was used to estimate the ages of wild P. leniusculus from an English stream. The relationship between lipofuscin‐estimated age and carapace length suggested relatively slow growth in this wild population, consistent with a high population density and severe competition. The analysis also extended the known longevity of P. leniusculus to approximately 16 years.
5. The lipofuscin method for determining age and growth may be widely applicable to freshwater crayfish, with probable further potential both within and outside the Crustacea.  相似文献

In Locusta migratoria suspended from a flight balance, flight speed relative to the air and the lift were recorded throughout adult life. During continuous flight at all ages flight speed and lift decrease, but during maturation both aerodynamic parameters increase. These parameters appear to be dominated by the wing-stroke frequency in a more or less constant relationship. Locusts only 2 days old can maintain altitude in free flight. It is concluded that the basic neuronal flight pattern is determined at the last moult and that only the motoroutput frequency increases to approximately match the body weight, which increases with age.  相似文献

The infection rate of eugregarine parasites, Cephaloidophora pacifica, within the digestive tract of larval Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, was examined using samples collected from the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean. Immature and mature eugregarine gamont stages were found at all larval stages older than Calyptopis I stage. Eugregarine infection in 14.0% (N = 108) of the first feeding stage (Calyptopis I) suggested that krill larvae are at risk from being infected during physiological transition from non-feeding to feeding stages. Eugregarine prevalence and intensity of infection at the three calyptopis stages increased with stage/krill length. Statistical analysis showed that the intensity of C. pacifica infection also increased with host density. Thus, krill density is probably a key determinant of the intensity of infection. We found gamont stage eugregarines in the host hind-gut, blocking the passage of food. Eugregarine infections in larval krill may have a negative impact on digestion and absorption in the host digestive tract.  相似文献

Bone maturation is the only reliable indicator of growth and its radiologic assessment with or without automated systems is a qualitative method. Image processing allows the study of bone maturation with quantitative data. Carpal bone maturation was studied in 20 children (13 boys and 7 girls, ages ranging from 4 to 15 years) without any clinical evidence of endocrine disease by image analysis from computed tomography (CT) scans. Each wrist CT scan was processed in order to extract the carpal bones and to measure quantitative data regarding volume, axes of inertia and density for each bone. The volumes and the length of the inertia axes were significantly correlated with age. Whatever the age, there were strong correlations between the volume or the length of the main inertia axis of one carpal bone and that of all others. The decrease in the carpal bone volume measured from the processing procedure compared with the theoretical volume of bone defined from the length of the three inertia axes indicated a change in bone shape during growth. Although the mean density was constant, there was an increase in the standard deviation of density with age. Skeletal maturity assessment with image analysis from CT scans seems to be a good complementary investigation to determine bone age in children.  相似文献

Krill in captivity endure spatial restrictions, regardless of the size or shape of tank used. Visual inspection of freshly caught and captive animals suggests that their appendages, particularly the antennae and antennules, are often subject to injury. We have developed a novel method for reducing physical damage to captive krill based on their reported reaction to feeding whales. This method involves creating a bubble curtain that keeps the krill in the centre of the tank and away from potentially damaging hard surfaces. There was no difference in the length of the antennae between any of the captive animals. Trends in the data suggest that the antennules of krill maintained in a 200 L bubble curtain tank and a1000 L holding tank, were longer and less variable in length, than for krill in a 200 L tank with no bubble curtain. Freshly caught krill from the field were found to have damage to both antennae and antennules. The implications of these findings for husbandry of krill and for behavioural studies in the laboratory are discussed.  相似文献

The study presents a demographic assessment of the Carlston Annis (Bt-5) Late Archaic hunting and gathering population recovered from the banks of the Green River in west-central Kentucky. The shell midden habitation and cemetery site originally yielded the remains of 390 individuals. Radiocarbon dates place site occupation between 3,000 and 4,500 y.b.p. The skeletal sample consisted of 354 individuals ranging in age from 7 months in utero to 70 + years. Subadults were aged by seriation of dental and skeletal developmental criteria. Adult ages were determined by the multifactorial summary age method that employed 1) five indicators of adult skeletal age at death, 2) the procedure of age indicator seriation, and 3) differential weighting of age assessments as determined by principal components analysis. Adult sex diagnoses were based on qualitative assessment of pelvic and cranial morphological criteria. The Bt-5 life table analysis yields an E0 of 22.4 years, crude birth of 45, mean family size of 3.3, gross reproductive rate of 2.7, generation length of 26.6 years, and B of .076, indicating a healthy population with a substantial capability to replace succeeding generations. Survivorship profiles and demographic parameters that compare the Carlston Annis (Bt-5) and Indian Knoll (Oh-2) skeletal series are presented. Both populations display type II survivorship curves, with high infant mortality and early onset of elevated mortality rates in adults. Major differences between Bt-5 and Oh-2 demographic parameters concern adult sex ratio and adult age distribution over 30 years. These differences are interpreted to reflect census errors in the Oh-2 demographic reconstruction that were possibly introduced by selective methodological biases and/or taphonomic factors.  相似文献
