The production of oysters in Guaratuba Bay, in the state of Paraná, Brazil, is still a mixed activity of mariculture and extractivism. The sustainable development of this production requires the monitoring of environmental, genetic, reproductive, and zootechnical variables. This study evaluated the importance of these variables on Crassostrea oyster production. Data were obtained between September 2009 and February 2011 from six evaluations: water quality, oyster larvae in plankton, capture of oyster spat by artificial collectors, molecular identification of collected spat and larvae, continuous evaluation of the reproductive maturity stage of adult oysters, and zootechnical performance achieved by experimental production. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, and water transparency were the environmental factors that had the most influence on the reproductive cycle (e.g. gonadal development and spat capture) and on the growth of the oyster. The highest rates for spat uptake were recorded in the summer, coinciding with the peak of sexual maturity of adults. The growth of the oysters, in terms of the weight of the meat, was related to the gonadal stage.  相似文献

The banded murex Hexaplex trunculus (Linnaeus, 1758) is a commercially exploited gastropod in the Mediterranean region including Tunisia where it has become an important fishery resource these last years. In the present investigation, some reproductive aspects of this species were described in the population of Boughrara lagoon based on macroscopic examination of the gonads (gonadic conditional indices) together with observation of the seasonal hypertrophy of the penis in males and capsule gland in females. This procedure of assessing reproductive activity was validated by field observations of copulation and spawning. Mature females were found during 10 months and mature males during 8 months being both frequent in January and February. Reproductive activity was slightly asynchronous between sexes with males reaching maturity before females. Gonadic release occurred earlier in males between January and March against February to April in females. These findings were in agreement with field observations of copulation in January and February and egg-capsule laying in late February and March. Hatching juveniles were observed in the field in April and May.  相似文献

With a nearly global distribution the vespertilionid bat Myotis represents one of the most exceptional examples of adaptive radiation among mammals. We investigated the reproductive activity of the vespertilionid bat yellowish myotis, Myotis levis, from a highland area in Southeastern Brazil. The data were obtained through histological analyses of the male and female genital systems from February 2010 to May 2011. The testes of the adult yellowish myotis showed seasonal morphological characteristics which were categorized in the following stages: rest, maturing, mature, and mating. Rest and maturing males were recorded throughout the rainy season (October‐March). In the rest stage no spermatogenesis was observed and the epididymal duct was devoid of spermatozoa. Maturing individuals had started spermatogenesis and few spermatozoa were found in the epididymal duct. Mature males were found toward the end (February‐March) of the rainy season, when full spermatogenic activity was recorded and spermatozoa were packed in the epididymal duct. Although not recorded, mating probably occurred in the middle of the dry season (April–September) when the cauda epididymis was enlarged and packed with sperm. The spermatozoa remained stored in the cauda epididymis for at least three months when the testes entered into regression. The ovaries showed all types of ovarian follicles throughout the study period except mature follicles which were registered only in July (mid‐dry season). Lactating females were captured in the beginning of the rainy season. The seasonal reproductive characteristics of the yellowish myotis from this Neotropical highland area were similar those of epididymal sperm‐storing temperate vespertilionids. J. A total of 1527 specimens of poor cod, Trisopterus minutus, was collected by trawl fishing between April 2001 and March 2002 from the ?zmir Bay (Middle Aegean Sea). Fish size ranged from 10.6 cm total length (TL, minimum) in September to 24.8 cm TL in April. Of the sampled population 53% were males and 41% females (sex ratio female : male = 1 : 1.3). Length–weight relationships were determined for males, females and combined sexes as W = 0.007L3.16, W = 0.009L3.04 and W = 0.007L3.14 respectively.  相似文献

Marteilioides chungmuensis, a protozoan paramyxean parasite, infects the oocytes of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. The effects of infection on the reproductive cycle of C. gigas were investigated over two consecutive years at Okayama Prefecture, Japan. In male oysters, gonadal development began during February/March, maturity was achieved in June and spawning activity extended from July to September. In November and December, male oysters were not seen, probably because their gonads regressed to connective tissue and they transformed into undifferentiated oysters. By contrast, female oysters, in which parasite spore formation occurred, were still carrying oocytes until the following March and the spawning process of female oysters took 5 months longer than that of males in epizootic areas. The prevalence of M. chungmuensis infection increased from July to September, when most female oysters had their spawning period, and declined from October to the following April when oysters were at the spent stage. The prevalence of infection increased again in May of the following year and high prevalence was observed in the following July. When prevalence was compared between oysters of different age classes, higher prevalence was detected in older than in younger oysters. Histological examination showed that infected oysters produced oocytes continuously and spawned repeatedly from October to March, during which period healthy oysters were reproductively inactive. Parasites can infect the oocytes of infected oysters throughout the longer spawning period. These observations suggest that M. chungmuensis extends the reproductive period of infected oysters for its own reproductive benefit.  相似文献

Macroscopic and histological studies were carried out to describe the reproductive styles and sex reversal and to follow gonadal changes in captive yellowfin seabream during the second year of life. Four reproductive styles are found in Acanthopagrus latus (Houttuyn, 1782): (i) males and females (gonochorism), (ii) functional males, (iii) transitionals and (iv) functional females. The species is a protandric hermaphrodite and begins life as a functional male with testicular zone undergoing active spermatogenesis, while the ovarian zone is arrested at the primary growth (perinucleolar) phase. Males and females were encountered in virtually all size‐classes. Functional males outnumbered the functional females in all size‐classes in which they were encountered. Sex reversal begins in the transitionals from July to August, after spawning in the functional males, at 14.9–20.2 cm standard length (SL) and, by November, maturation of the ovarian tissue begins. A. latus in cages in Kuwait waters spawns from January to April with a peak in February for males, and a peak in March for females and transitionals. Spawning begins in the 18.3–20.2 cm size‐range fish, peaking in the 20.3–22.2 cm size‐range in both males and females and also in the transitionals, although a few of the latter spawn from 14.9 cm SL. In relation to age, spawning begins at 20 months in males and peaks at 21 months. Females begin to spawn at 21 months with a peak at 22 months, while transitionals generally begin to spawn at 20 months, although a few 14–15‐month‐old sex‐changing individuals were encountered. Temperature, either alone or in combination with other unknown factors, triggers spawning in A. latus.  相似文献

The yearly gonadal cycle of two Kinneret teleosts, Barbus longiceps and Capoeta damascina and of their hybrid, was assessed by measuring the gonadosomatic index (GSI) in both sexes, as well as the spermatozoan index (SPI) in the males. SPI was established through a computerized analysis system, using light microscopy images of histological preparations of the testes.
Barbus longiceps specimens had highest GSI in March, 6.31 for males and 1.40 for females. Capoela damascina had highest GS1 in January, 6.63 for males and 6.88 for females. In the male-like hybrids, the highest GSI was 5.57 in February, and in female-like hybrids 1.83 in March; no gametes were ever formed in hybrid gonads. The highest SPI appeared in B. longiceps in April, while in C. damascina the highest SPI was found in March. In both species, the highest SPI was attained several weeks after the highest GSI was observed. It is suggested that the peak of the breeding season of both species is actually represented by the highest SPI. In males, the decreasing GSI, which corresponds to the highest SPI, represents the loss of gonad weight, which is due to the elimination of the spermatid residual bodies, prior to spermiation. In the females the decreasing GSI is the result of ovulation, and characterizes the peak of spawning activity.  相似文献

Sardinella gibbosa and Sardinella albella of Dar es Salaam coast were studied from January 1969 to March 1970. Measurements on the standard length, weight, body depth, length and width of the gonads were taken and qualitative assessments of fat coverage on the alimentary canal and maturation stages were made. New size-groups of both the species appeared in the lamp-fishery at c. 6 cm SL between October 1969 and February 1970 and the largest specimens caught were 14.1 and 12.9 cm SL for the first and second species respectively. Length-weight equations of the two species show higher values of the regression coefficients for the females compared to the males. Fat content of fishes > 10 cm SL was high during March to May and low during August to December 1969. First maturation and spawning are probably attained at c. 10.5 and 10 cm SL in the first and second species respectively. Mature S. gibbosa occurred between August and November 1969 and probably the species has a single, annual spawning season of 3.4 months duration. Mature S. albella, 10.1–12.5 cm SL occurred between August 1969 and February 1970; mature females, 12.6–12.9 cm SL were encountered throughout the sampling period.  相似文献

Using histological analysis, the reproductive pattern of Mussismilia hispida, a zooxanthellate coral species endemic to the Brazilian coast, was verified. Fragments from two tagged colonies and ten haphazardly chosen colonies were collected monthly, from April 1989 to March 1990, at Praia da Tartaruga, Buzios, Rio de Janeiro state. The results showed that M. hispida is a sequential hermaphroditic species with a broadcast-spawning mode of reproduction. Small immature oocytes were first observed in April 1989 while early spermatic cysts were found in December 1989. After entering the mesoglea, the largest oocytes increase in size by incorporating the smallest ones into their cytoplasm. Mature oocytes and spermaries occurred concomitantly on the same fertile mesenteries during summer, and disappeared from some samples between February 1990 and March 1990 (late summer/early autumn). Gonad maturation occurred with increasing seawater temperature, suggesting seasonal synchrony in the reproductive cycle. Not all oocytes reached their full development, and some were resorbed after a short period of degeneration. No zooxanthellae were found in pre-spawn oocytes, which characteristically had a large amount of vitelline material and a peripheral germ vesicle.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to (1) assess year-round behaviors and activity patterns of captive raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) and (2) characterize the species' reproductive endocrinology. Behaviors and activity patterns of 12 (5.7) animals were recorded over a 1-year period. During that time, fecal samples were collected 2-7 times/week from 16 (7.9) individuals (six of these were included in the behavioral study) for the analysis of testosterone, progesterone and estrogen metabolite concentrations. Activity pattern and excretion of gonadal steroids followed a seasonal pattern. Specifically, dogs were cathemeral in summer, and primarily nocturnal in winter. In the males, testosterone concentrations were at baseline from April through September, began to rise in October and reached peak concentrations in February (P<0.05). In the females, elevated estrogen (P<0.05) was observed in March followed by an increase in progestagen concentrations from March through May (P<0.05) in both pregnant and pseudopregnant animals. Gender significantly influenced monthly testosterone/estrogen ratio (P<0.01); values were higher in males than in females throughout the year with overall percentage of overlapping values between males and females being 28%. In summary, this study characterized cirannual fluctuations in behaviors and gonadal steroid metabolites in the raccoon dog maintained in captivity. Because there is no obvious sexual dimorphism, the differences in testosterone/estrogen ratio may be useful for gender differentiation (72% accuracy), especially among individuals living in the wild.  相似文献

In this study, triploid Sydney rock oysters Saccostrea glomerata, which do not reproduce and have only limited gonadal development, were used to calculate the cost of producing and maintaining somatic tissues. The consumption of oxygen was measured and converted to units of energy expended. The consumption of oxygen of diploid oysters, in different stages of the reproductive cycle, was also measured. Knowing the costs of producing and maintaining somatic tissues (obtained from the triploid oysters), it was possible to calculate the energy demand of somatic and reproductive tissues of diploid oysters. The focus of this study was to test whether this method would work, to investigate if this method would give results in accordance with modern life-history theory and to test hypotheses about costs of reproduction in oysters. It was found that in diploid oysters, 27% of the consumed oxygen was needed for reproductive processes. It was also found that the costs of production and maintenance of reproductive tissues were on average 84% of those of somatic tissues. Costs for the production and maintenance of somatic tissues decreased over time. Costs for reproduction also decreased, but were dependent on the stage of gonadal development. If the relative mass of gametes in the gonads was large, the costs were relatively small; if the mass was relatively small, the costs were large. Differences between traits of males and females were never significant, suggesting that reproductive effort and costs were similar in males and females. It was estimated that if diploid oysters did not reproduce, they could gain 64% more somatic ash-free dry mass. Thus, in terms of growth, reproduction is an expensive activity.  相似文献

Synopsis The longheaded eagle ray, Aetobatus flagellum, has recently increased significantly in numbers in Ariake Sound. It is assumed that it feeds on bivalves and so, to prevent predation by eagle rays on bivalves, a ‘predator control program’ aimed at reducing the ray population has been in place since 2001. We examined their occurrence, age, growth and food in Ariake Sound to obtain data on the ecology of the eagle ray and provide basic information on their potential impact on bivalve stocks in Ariake Bay. The eagle ray is a seasonal visitor to Ariake Sound, increasing in numbers from April, and peaking during the summer. None were captured during surveys in December and February. Their movement pattern around the bay differed according to sex. Pregnant females were caught in the estuary during August and September. Females grew to a larger size than males and apparently lived longer. The maximum ages were 19 years for females and 9 years for males. Growth until two years was similar in both sexes, but after 2 years females grew larger. The eagle ray fed only on bivalves, especially Ruditapes philippinarum and Atrina pectinata, very important fishery species farmed in Ariake Bay.  相似文献

The histology of the gonad of the red sea bream,Pagrus major, was examined in order to study the early gonadal development, sexual maturation and sex ratio in a natural population. A total of 1,117 fish between the ages of 4 months and 8 years were examined. Gonads of 4-month-old fish were either sexually undifferentiated with a central cavity, or ovarian in form. Gonads of 12- and 18-month-old fish were ovaries or bisexual gonads, while those of 2-year-old fish were ovaries, bisexual gonads or testes. Fish aged between 3 and 8 years had ovaries or testes, except for a few bisexual gonads found in 3- and 4-year-old fish. The chronological appearance of females, hermaphrodites and males in that order, and histological evidence, suggested that the testis originates from the ovary via a bisexual gonad in the juvenile stage. The sex ratio of females to males at the age of 2 years and over was about 1:1, suggesting that hermaphroditic red sea bream appear in about 50% of the juvenile population. The sexual pattern in this species, therefore, is concluded to be gonochorism with a bisexual juvenile stage.  相似文献

A macroscopic and histological analysis of gonads was carried out during the spawning season of the high-Antarctic channichthyid Chionodraco hamatus in the western Ross Sea. Samples were collected between December and February during several years in the coastal waters of Terra Nova Bay. Gonad maturity stages were described for males and females according to macroscopic and histological scales. Using multi-year data, the estimated length at first spawning of females was about 35 cm TL, very similar to that obtained indirectly for males. Similar to many other high-Antarctic fish, C. hamatus is a summer spawner. The greater part of the stock was indeed in spawning condition between December and February, although a large proportion of females large enough to spawn probably did not spawn in that season. The present data confirm that C. hamatus, as is typical for Antarctic fish, probably spawns a single batch of oocytes once a year. In addition, vitellogenesis is a slow process that extends over at least 1 year. Discrepancies between the macroscopic and histological appearance of gonads were found. These were associated mainly with spent and resting females (maturity stages 5 and 2, respectively). This study demonstrates the importance of histological analysis of gonads in order to confirm the results of the macroscopic analyses routinely carried out in studies of reproductive biology. This is of particular importance in determining size at maturity and spawning stock biomass, for assessment purposes.  相似文献

The horse-bearded mussel Modiolus barbatus (Linneus, 1758) is an important edible bivalve in the Adriatic Sea; its population is especially large in the Mali Ston Bay area, where the species is present at depths up to 8 m. In order to assess the sustainable exploitation rate for this species, as well as to estimate its potential capacity for a sustainable aquaculture production, we determined the species’ reproductive cycle along with its nutrient storage strategy, employing histological and biochemical methods. The population shows significantly more females than males, and no hermaphrodites. The smallest adult individual, an active male, was 16.0 mm in length, suggesting that sexual maturation starts around this length. While the period between January and February is characterized by sexual repose, early and late stages of gametogenesis were found between March and May, and spawning peaked from June till August. The increase of oocyte diameter followed the same trend. A significant positive correlation was observed between gonad index and temperature, and a negative correlation between gonad index and salinity. Oscillations of stored nutrients were tightly coupled with the gametogenic cycle.  相似文献

The reproductive cycle and parasitism in the clam Anomalocardia brasiliana were studied in two different areas, an intermediate beach (Cidade) and a tidal flat (Araçá), in Southeast Brazil. Four gametogenic stages were described for males and females in both areas. Mature and spawning individuals were present throughout the period of study at Cidade and Araçá; however, major temporal differences were recorded between sites. Whereas only a few individuals in the resting stage were recorded at Cidade throughout the study period, resting stage individuals were frequent at Araçá. Moreover, a shorter period of gametogenesis was observed at Araçá than at Cidade. Oocyte number was the most effective parameter to differentiate gametogenic stages. An unidentified digenetic trematode was the only parasite infecting A. brasiliana at the study sites, and caused castration of all hosts. Parasite prevalence (proportion of infected hosts) was similar and low (ca 7.5%) at Cidade and Araçá and therefore is not expected to compromise the reproductive output of these populations. Comparison with data from previous studies suggests a latitudinal pattern for the reproductive biology of A. brasiliana, with resting stages occurring only at two high-latitude sites; however, no evidence was found for a latitudinal pattern of trematode prevalence in this species.  相似文献

The annual reproductive cycle of the dragonet,Repomucenus valenciennei, from Tokyo Bay, Japan, was studied by analysis of seasonal trends in gonadosomatic indices and histological observations of gonads. Sexual dimorphism in the growth of several body parts relative to standard length (SL) and changes in color pattern of the first dorsal fin with growth were also investigated. The spawning season lasted from spring (April [1991] or February [1992]) to autumn (October) with two spawning peaks, in spring and autumn. In spring, only one-year-old (age 1+) fish spawned, age 0+ females not spawning until autumn, at which time they had reached age 1+. Likewise, histological observations of males indicated that testes had reached full maturity by 80 mm SL (age 1+). The minimum mature size of females was estimated as 60 mm SL. In males 45–80 mm SL, the first spine of the first dorsal fin, last ray of the second dorsal fin, last ray of the anal fin, and caudal fin ray showed strongly positive allometry, indicating rapid growth of these structures relative to SL. Subsequently, their growth returned to an isometric pattern in males>80 mm SL. In females, on the other hand, the same body parts showed slightly positive allometry throughout their growth. The color pattern on the first dorsal fin also changed in males 45–80 mm SL.  相似文献

The mangrove oyster Crassostrea rhizophorae is important fishery resource along the entire Brasilian coast with excellent potential for marine culture. The purpose of this paper was to examine the reproductive characteristics of the oyster of the Maraú river estuary in Camamu Bay, Bahia, Brasil. The samples were collected monthly, from September 2006 to August 2007, at two points (I and II) in Camamu Bay. At each site 20 oysters were collected for histological analysis, fixed in Davidson's solution, embedded in paraffin, dehydrated in an ethanol series, sectioned (7 microm thick) and stained with Harris hematoxylin and Eosin (HE). Additionally, 30 oysters were sampled, at each point, for a condition index analysis. The water temperature ranged from 23.5 degrees C to 30 degrees C and the salinity from 15 to 25 ups at Point I (Maraú) and from 25 to 35 at Point II (Tanque Island). The oyster's height ranged from 30 to 92 mm at Point I and from 27 to 102 mm at Point II, with an average of 49.0 mm +/- 9.1 (n = 230) and 49.9 mm +/- 9.9 (n = 237), respectively. Among the sampled oysters at Point I, 59.1% were females, 31.3% males, 1.3% hermaphrodites and 8.2% of the oysters of undetermined sex. At Point II, 66.2% were females, 30.4% males, 0.8% hermaphrodites and 2.5% (n = 237) of undetermined sex. The gonadic stage analysis indicated that the reproduction period of the C. rhizophorae in the Maraú Peninsula was continuous all year, without any regressive phase. The condition index (R) ranged from 8.0% to 17.7%. The peak periods of R coincided with the expressive oyster's percentage in the maturation and liberation gametic stages. The results of these findings will contribute information for the oyster spat collection and to the process installation of the oyster culture in Camamu Bay.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We investigated the annual gametogenic phenology of the freshwater pearl mussel, Lamellidens marginalis (Lamarck, 1819), collected from a lentic habitat at Mymensingh, Bangladesh, using biometry and histology through monthly sampling from August 2015 to July 2016. After biometric measurements, thin slices of dorso-ventral sections were cut from the middle of the mussels for histology to determine sex and level of gonadal maturation. The condition index (CI) ranged from 0.64 (March) to 0.99 (January) over the study period. The CI peaked three times (January, April and July) indicating that the mussels were ripe during these months and subsequent decreases in CI indicated spawning, which was consistent with histology. Both males and females exhibited similar patterns in terms of gonadal development, maturation and spawning activity. It was confirmed that natural populations of L. marginalis spawn throughout the year with remarkable temporal variations, except during December when the surface water temperature reaches annual minima (16.5°C). Highest spawning activity of L. marginalis was noted during February–March, May and July–November. The data obtained in the present study could be useful for the conservation managers of this commercial species by allowing harvesting of better quality mussels to be timed without interrupting major spawning activity.  相似文献

The present study aimed at assessing the annual reproductive cycle of female Arabian carpetshark, Chiloscyllium arabicum from the Persian Gulf by a macroscopic and microscopic evaluation of the reproductive tract. The annual cycle of gonadal steroids [17β-estradiol (E2), progesterone (P4) and testosterone (T)] was also assessed in this shark. In total, 130 female C. arabicum were collected from the Bahrakan Creek (located northwest of the Persian Gulf) between January 2018 and March 2019. Females were oviparous with an external-type ovary and only one functional ovary. Five sexual maturity stages were recognized based on macroscopic and microscopic evaluation: Immature I (August–October), Immature II (November–January), Mature (February–March), Pregnant (April–May) and Spent (June–July). The structural changes in the oviducts, oviducal glands and uterus throughout the annual reproductive cycle were consistent with their roles in the egg movement, the egg capsule production and sperm storage. The plasma levels of the gonadal steroids were associated with morphological changes in the reproductive tract. E2 showed two detectable peaks during March (close to ovulation) and June (just before mating). P4 and T displayed a peak just before ovulation.  相似文献
