The study of phytoplankton in lakes, sors, streams, and rivers of the Yarayakha River basin with the help of scanning electron microscopy has made it possible to broaden the taxonomic spectrum of Bacillariophyta; 236 specific and intraspecific taxa from 63 genera are detected. A total of 16 species and varieties that are new for the flora of Russia were documented; 30 forms from 18 genera are identified only to the species. The maximum species diversity is recorded in a stream in the Yarayakha River mouth (82 species) and in the channel of the Khureikhotarka River (105 species). Species such as Cyclotella meneghiniana, Fragilaria exiguiformis, Navicula hanseatica, Neidium bisulcatum, Stauroneis anceps, Thalassiosira inserta, and Tabellaria flocculosa are the most widespread in the waterbodies.  相似文献

A total of 290 species and varieties of Bacillariophyta including 32 that were new for the flora of Karelia and 18 that were new for the flora of Russia, have been recorded in phytoplankton in nine rivers of the White Sea basin. The genera Aulacoseira, Pinnularia, Eunotia, and Navicula s. l. are the richest in taxonomy. The maximum species diversity was recorded in the Suma (73), Kolezhma (91), and Chirko-Kem (146) rivers. The following species are the most widespread in the rivers that were under study here: A. ambigua, A. subarctica, A. subborealis, {tiA. tenella}, Asterionella formosa, and Tabellaria flocculosa.  相似文献

In the framework of the international project EMERGE, species composition of epilithic diatoms of 34 selected high mountain lakes of Slovak part of the Tatra Mountains were investigated. In all, 127 taxa of diatoms belonging to 26 genera were recorded. Comparison of the epilithic assemblages of the investigated lakes showed differences both in relative abundance and taxa present in the individual lakes. On the basis of species composition and relative abundance of epilithic diatoms using hierarchical cluster analysis, two main groups of lakes were created. The first group includes 4 lakes which can be classified as strongly acidified and 9 lakes which are acidified or threatened by acidification. In this group, acidophilous species such as Achnanthes helvetica, A. marginulata, Aulacoseira distans and Tabellaria flocculosa prevailed. The second group includes 19 non-acidified lakes. The most common diatoms in these lakes were Achnanthes minutissima, A. helvetica, Cymbella minuta and Denticula tenuis which occur practically in all these lakes but with different abundances. The division of lakes due to their diatom species composition mostly confirmed the status of these lakes as judged from their water chemistry.  相似文献

Dated sediment cores from acidified and fishless Lake Gaffeln and Lake Härsvatten, SW Sweden, were analyzed for Daphnia ephippia and Chaoborus mandibles to test whether acidification history and fish extirpations could be reconstructed in a paleo-study using these easily identifiable animal remains. According to monitoring data fish were lost in both lakes from the 1950s to the 1970s. Progressive acidification prior to monitoring was confirmed by a gradual decrease and eventual loss of Daphnia ephippia in both study lakes during the first half of the twentieth century. In Lake Gaffeln mandibles of C. obscuripes appeared immediately after fish loss in 1973, and the regular presence of this species confirmed the succeeding fishless state of this lake. In Lake Härsvatten sediments C. obscuripes appeared only recently, i.e. three decades after fish extirpation, showing that the absence of C. obscuripes mandibles is not a trustworthy indicator of fish presence. Hence, the appearance of C. obscuripes was not temporally related to fish loss but confirmed the present fishless condition. Known historical presence of cyprinid fish in Lake Gaffeln was confirmed by a significantly higher proportion of fragmented mandibles of C. flavicans compared to the historically cyprinid-free Lake Härsvatten. In addition, both lake profiles displayed zero-proportions of fragmented mandibles during fishless periods. We conclude that acidification history and fish extirpations can be inferred by integrated studies on subfossil Daphnia ephippia and Chaoborus mandibles. However, during extreme ultra-oligotrophic conditions in acidified clear-water lakes subfossil Chaoborus mandibles may be too scarce to infer fish absence/presence.  相似文献

In shallow lakes with large littoral zones, epiphytes and submerged macrophytes can make an important contribution to the total annual primary production. We investigated the primary production (PP) of phytoplankton, submerged macrophytes, and their epiphytes, from June to August 2005, in two large shallow lakes. The production of pelagic and littoral phytoplankton and of the dominant submerged macrophytes in the littoral zone (Potamogeton perfoliatus in Lake Peipsi and P. perfoliatus and Myriopyllum spicatum in Lake Võrtsjärv) and of their epiphytes was measured using a modified 14C method. The total PP of the submerged macrophyte area was similar in both lakes: 12.4 g C m?2 day?1 in Peipsi and 12.0 g C m?2 day?1 in Võrtsjärv. In Peipsi, 84.2% of this production was accounted for by macrophytes, while the shares of phytoplankton and epiphytes were low (15.6 and 0.16%, respectively). In Võrtsjärv, macrophytes contributed 58%, phytoplankton 41.9% and epiphytes 0.1% of the PP in the submerged macrophyte area. Epiphyte production in both lakes was very low in comparison with that of phytoplankton and macrophytes: 0.01, 5.04, and 6.97 g C m?2 day?1, respectively, in Võrtsjärv, and 0.02, 1.93, and 10.5 g C m?2 day?1, respectively, in Peipsi. The PP of the littoral area contributed 10% of the total summer PP of Lake Peipsi sensu stricto and 35.5% of the total summer PP of Lake Võrtsjärv.  相似文献

The formation of foams on lakes is a complex phenomenon whose origin is often hardly identifiable. Recently (2007, 2008, and 2010) foam episodes started to occur in Lake Maggiore, northern Italy. The present work aimed to verify the hypothesis of an endogenous-natural origin of these foams, driven by trophic or climatic changes. To this purpose, a long-term (2000–2013) analysis of phytoplankton biovolumes, meteorological, and hydrological data has been performed together with the chemical characterization of foams. Foams resulted of endogenous origin and likely related to phytoplankton biomass degradation. Data analysis highlighted atypical warm temperature and residual lake stratification in winter in two of the three years of foam events, coupled with exceptional Bacyllariophyceae blooms in spring. Tabellaria flocculosa mostly contributed in terms of biomass in 2007 and 2008, but not in 2010; thus overall algal biomass seemed a better predictor of the risk of foam formation. Foam events occurred from July to December, driven by atypically windy conditions, and congruently with the time needed to degrade biomass into surface-active compounds. A co-occurrence of different factors resulted essential to generate foams, and climate changes likely contribute to enhance their occurrence in Lake Maggiore.  相似文献

While the structuring role of fish in lakes is well studied for the summer season in North temperate lakes, little is known about their role in winter when fish activity and light irradiance potentially are lower. This is unfortunate as the progressing climate change may have strong effects on lake winter temperature and possibly on trophic dynamics too. We conducted an enclosure experiment with and without the presence of fish throughout winter in two shallow lakes with contrasting phosphorus concentrations. In hypertrophic Lake Søbygård, absence of fish led to higher biomass of zooplankton, higher grazing potential (zooplankton:phytoplankton ratio) and, accordingly, lower biomass of phytoplankton and chlorophyll a (Chl a), while the concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), oxygen and pH decreased. The average size of egg-bearing Daphnia and Bosmina and the minimum size of egg-bearing specimens of the two genera rose. In the less eutrophic Lake Stigsholm, zooplankton and their grazing potential were also markedly affected by fish. However, the decrease in Chl a was slight, and phytoplankton biovolume, pH and the oxygen concentration were not affected. TN was higher when fish were absent. Our results indicate that: (i) there is a notable effect of fish on zooplankton community structure and size during winter in both eutrophic and hypertrophic North temperate lakes, (ii) Chl a can be high in winter in such lakes, despite low light irradiance, if fish are abundant, and (iii) the cascading effects on phytoplankton and nutrients in winter may be more pronounced in hypertrophic lakes. Climate warming supposedly leading to reduced winter mortality and dominance of small fish may enhance the risk of turbid state conditions in nutrient-enriched shallow lakes, not only during the summer season, but also during winter.  相似文献

Pikeperch is a major predator in the pelagic zone of eutrophic waters, such as the large north-temperate lowland lakes Võrtsjärv (Estonia) and Peipsi (Estonia/Russia). The size and structure of the pikeperch population is strongly influenced by their success at the juvenile stage. Therefore, we investigated the diet and prey selection of pikeperch fry caught in the ice-free period in lakes Peipsi and Võrtsjärv in 2007 and 2008. We analysed the stomach contents of 635 pikeperch from Lake Peipsi and 202 pikeperch from Lake Võrtsjärv, and compared our findings with similar data from the 1950s (Erm, About Biological and Morphological Differences of Pikeperch. Hydrobiological Researches II (in Estonian), 1961). Analysing 4–20 cm long fry, we studied differences in prey size, seasonal diet patterns and the ontogenetic diet shift. In both lakes, 0+ pikeperch feed mostly on large predatory zooplankters. However, in Lake Peipsi the stomach content weight and the average number of food items in stomach were higher, and the food spectrum was wider than in Lake Võrtsjärv. There was also a difference in the type of food that dominated fry’s stomach content (calculated by weight) in the two lakes. In Lake Peipsi, chironomids larvae, as well as zooplankters Daphnia galeata and Bythotrephes longimanus dominated, while in Lake Võrtsjärv zooplankters Mesocyclops leuckarti and Leptodora kindti. Seasonal analysis showed that cladocerans dominated in pikeperch fry stomach content in summer and at the beginning of September, but copepods were dominant in autumn and spring. In contrast to the studies carried out from 1952 to 1958 (Erm, About Biological and Morphological Differences of Pikeperch. Hydrobiological Researches II (in Estonian), 1961), the shift from planktivory to piscivory at the end of the first growing season was hardly ever observed during our investigation. We believe this is due to the lack of suitable prey fish as there was a collapse of the smelt, Osmerus eperlanus (L.), population in both lakes. The transition of pikeperch from planktivory to piscivory was delayed till the next summer.  相似文献

Ancient sister lakes are considered to be ancient lakes lying in close geographic proximity, sharing a related origin and significant time of co-existence, usually having hydrological connection as well as a balanced degree of faunal overlap and distinctness. A paradigm for studying sister lake relationships are the ancient lakes Ohrid and Prespa in the Balkans, which are characterized by high degrees of endemicity. Three general patterns of endemic species can be distinguished for these lakes: (1) taxa that are endemic to either lake, with no close relatives in the respective sister lake, (2) closely related but distinct endemic taxa in both lakes (sister species) and (3) shared endemic taxa occurring in both lakes. In the present paper, two endemic freshwater pulmonate gastropod species, Radix relicta (Lake Ohrid) and R. pinteri (Lake Prespa), are used to study the evolution of presumed sister species based on biogeographical and comparative DNA data from world-wide Radix taxa. Phylogenetic, phylogeographical and parametric bootstrap analyses all suggest a sister group relationship of R. relicta and R. pinteri (pattern 2 of endemic diversity). Sister to these two taxa is the widespread R. ampla, which does not occur in the vicinity of lakes Ohrid and Prespa. The southern feeder spring complexes of Lake Ohrid are inhabited by another lineage (Radix sp. 1), which resembles Radix relicta in morphology/anatomy. For Lake Prespa, the widespread R. auricularia was reported in addition to the endemic R. pinteri. Comparative phylogenetic data favour a western Adriatic zoogeographical affinity of lakes Ohrid and Prespa over an Aegean-Anatolian faunal connection. The status of lakes Ohrid and Prespa as sister lakes is evaluated in the light of current knowledge on gastropod speciation and endemism in these hotspots of biodiversity.  相似文献

Prokaryotic diversity was studied in the planktonic communities of six Sol-Iletsk lakes (Orenburg oblast, Russia) varying in salinity level using the Illumina technology of high-throughput sequencing. The extremely halophilic archaea of the phyla Euryarchaeota and Nanohaloarchaeota, as well as the bacterial phylum Bacteroidetes predominated in the communities of lakes with salinity of 285–300‰. Representatives of the phyla Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria, as well as of the class Gammaproteobacteria were predominant in the lakes with salinity 110?180‰. A bloom of Cyanobacteria was observed in Bol’shoe Gorodskoe Lake (10‰ salinity). The dominant OTUs in the lakes with high salinity were represented by archaea Halonotius sp., uncultured Nanohaloarchaea, and bacteria Salinibacter sp. In the lakes with medium salinity level the dominants included gammaproteobacteria Spiribacter sp., alphaproteobacteria Roseovarius sp., flavobacteria Psychroflexus sp., unidentified archaea of the family Haloferacaceae, actinobacteria Pontimonas sp. and Rhodoluna sp. In the lake with low salinity level cyanobacteria of the genus Planktothrix were predominant. Effect of salinity on prokaryotic taxonomic richness, composition, and diversity in planktonic communities of the studied lakes was demonstrated.  相似文献

The effect of long-term changes in total precipitation on physical and chemical parameters of the water and the structure of phytoplankton community during a year were studied in a deep hard water lake. With respect to total precipitation, two different periods were distinguished: dry and wet. In the wet period, the water level rose and caused an increase in the water colour and a decrease in the electrolytic conductivity and concentration of nutrients. These changes were reflected in the composition and amount of phytoplankton. Certain phytoplankton groups, e.g. Cryptophyceae, Dinophyceae, Chrysophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and Chlorophyta/Charophyta, were positively affected by the environmental changes; instead, these effects were not observed in Cyanobacteria and Euglenophyta. The development of flagellates, such as Cryptomonas curvata, Plagioselmis nannoplanctica and Ceratium hirundinella, was enhanced during the wet period, whereas the dry period favoured non-flagellates, such as Planktothrix agardhii, Planktothrix rubescens and Limnothrix planctonica. Hence, the long-term variability in total precipitation can be a switch from non-flagellate- to flagellate-dominated phytoplankton in lakes. Moreover, a short time of ice cover duration in winter linked with the wet period promoted phytoplankton groups typical for spring and autumn, e.g. Cryptophyceae and Bacillariophyceae.  相似文献

Data on the infestation of certain fish species by the parasitic copepod Salmincola lavaretus are presented for the first time. The infested fish species included Bauntovsky whitefish (Coregonus baunti), an endemic species from the Maloye and Bolshoye Kapylyushi lakes; Siberian whitefish (C. pidschian) and Siberian cisco (C. sardinella) from Bolshoye Kapylyushi Lake and Baunt Lake, which belong to the Tsypo-Tsypikan lake system (the Lena River basin, Transbaikalia); and Teletsky whitefish (C. lavaretus natio smitti) from Teletskoe Lake (the Ob River basin). Previously, S. lavaretus had been described as a parasite of Baikal omul (C. migratorius) and Baikal whitefish (C. baicalensis) from Baikal. The taxons of S. longimanus complex (S. longimanus, S. l. sibirica, S. svetlanovi, and S. lavaretus)—parasites of nasal fossae of grayling and coregonid fishes—were registered in the lakes of the Lake Baikal basin (Lake Baikal and Khovsgol Lake), the Lena River, the Yenisei and the Ob rivers (the largest rivers of the Arctic zoogeographic province), and the Kobdo River (the Western Mongolian province). It was assumed that S. longimanus complex is more widely distributed in the water bodies of the Arctic zoogeographic province of the Palearctic.  相似文献

Results of the study of 11 lakes situated in the mountainous part of the Amur River basin are reported. Six fish species, namely, blunt-snouted lenok Brachymystax tumensis, Baikal-Lena grayling Thymallus baicalolenensis, Siberian stone loach Barbatula toni, Lagowski’s minnow Rhynchocypris lagowskii, Czekanowski’s minnow Rh. czekanowskii, and Amur sculpin Cottus szanaga, were found in five lakes. Four species were found in one lake (Lake Pereval’noe, basin of the Amgun’ River), and two species were found in each of the remaining lakes. Lenok and Amur sculpin were the most common species. The fauna of Lake Okonon (basin of the river Zeya) was the most specific and did not have analogs among the lake faunas; Czekanowski’s minnow and Baikal black grayling were found in this lake. The lenok ecotype that formed in the mountain lakes differed from the river lenok in some regards. The potential pathways of formation and protection of mountain lake ichthyocenoses of the Amur basin are discussed.  相似文献

Atmospheric acidification brought about the extinction of several species of planktonic Crustacea in lakes of the Bohemian Forest (?umava, Böhmerwald). The recent reversal in chemical parameters of lake water towards pre-acidification values raises the question whether the return of missing species is possible. We have designed a bioassay to test water from different lakes for the survival of Daphnia longispina, which inhabited the lakes under study but disappeared from those most affected by acidification. The bioassay showed the best survival in water from Ple?né Lake, one of those where Daphnia and Cyclops became extinct. A large-scale experiment was conducted by transplanting Daphnia longispina (Crustacea, Cladocera) and Cyclops abyssorum (Crustacea, Copepoda) from Prá?ilské Lake, where they have survived until the present, to Ple?né Lake. One year later, a successful reintroduction was confirmed for Cyclops abyssorum.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine factors affecting the vertical distribution of Eurytemora lacustris in mesotrophic lakes (Wigry, Hańcza, Szurpi?y; north-eastern Poland) during the summer stagnation. Eurytemora lacustris was found in all of the studied lakes, with the highest abundance (8 ind. L?1) in Lake Wigry. In Lake Szurpi?y, E. lacustris has never been recorded before. The results of this study revealed that E. lacustris was most numerous in thermocline zones, suggesting that this species could temporarily tolerate warmer water and lower oxygen concentrations due to better food resources. During the study, it was found that a large part of the E. lacustris population had epibiont ciliates, in contrast to other species of zooplankton that did not have any epibionts. The improvement in the water quality of many deep lakes could lead to an increase in the abundance of E. lacustris. However, epibiont ciliates may be a threat for this species and may play a substantial role in determining the production, distribution, and community dynamics of E. lacustris.  相似文献

The present-day contact zone between the Beringian and Arctic phylogenetic lineages of charrs of the genus Salvelinus in the Northwest Pacific is documented. A comparative analysis of the genetic differentiation and divergence indices for allopatric and sympatric populations of charrs and phylogenetic and genealogical analyses of the mtDNA haplotypes indicate that Lake Achchen and the Lake Pekulineiskoe are the zones of secondary contact between S. m. malma and S. taranetzi; Lake Nachikinskoe, between S. m. malma and Salvelinus sp. 4; and Lake Dal’nee, between S. m. malma and S. krogiusae. The level of divergence between phylogenetic groups of haplotypes considerably exceeds the range of intraspecific variability of S. m. malma and could not have been achieved after colonization of the lakes in conditions of sympathy. The obtained data suggest that the territory of Kamchatka was colonized by the common ancestor of the Arctic phylogroup of Taranetz charr.  相似文献

Bythotrephes longimanus, an invasive zooplankter from Eurasia, has caused severe declines in native zooplankton communities in Rainy and Kabetogama lakes in northern Minnesota. Both lakes have experienced a 40–60% decrease in peak summer zooplankton biomass following B. longimanus establishment around 2006–2007. In these lakes, yellow perch (Perca flavescens) are a key fishery species, and young-of-the-year (YOY) yellow perch are mainly planktivorous during their first summer. This led to concern that their growth could be detrimentally affected by the depletion of zooplankton forage. We used seining data to compare growth rates of YOY yellow perch before (2001–2005) and after (2008–2012) B. longimanus establishment in Rainy and Kabetogama lakes. Nearby Lake Vermilion, assumed to have been unaffected by B. longimanus during this time period, was used as a reference for natural variation in YOY growth in the region. YOY yellow perch length was modeled as a linear function of cumulative growing degree days (GDD) throughout the summer, and the slope of the relationship was compared between pre- and post-B. longimanus time periods for the three study lakes. The two lakes with B. longimanus showed similar decreases in YOY yellow perch growth rate relative to GDD, whereas Lake Vermilion showed no evidence of a decline in growth rates during this period. The reduction in growth rates resulted in an approximate 10% decrease in mean length of YOY yellow perch at the end of the summer after B. longimanus establishment, which could lead to further effects of this invasive zooplankter at higher trophic levels.  相似文献

Ancient lakes have long been recognized as “hot spots of evolution” and “evolutionary theatres” and they have significantly contributed to a better understanding of speciation and radiation processes in space and time. Yet, phylogenetic relationships of many ancient lake taxa, particularly invertebrate groups, are still unresolved. Also, the lack of robust morphological, anatomical, and phylogeographical data has largely prevented a rigorous testing of evolutionary hypotheses. For the freshwater gastropod genus Valvata—a group with a high degree of endemism in several ancient lakes—different evolutionary scenarios are suggested for different ancient lakes. Lake Baikal, for example, is inhabited by several endemic Valvata taxa that presumably do not form a monophyletic group. For such an evolutionary pattern, the term ancient lake species scatter is introduced here. In contrast, for the Balkan Lake Ohrid, workers previously suggested the presence of a monophyletic group of endemic Valvata species, that is, an ancient lake species flock. Sequence data of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase c subunit I gene (COI) from worldwide taxa, with a strong emphasis on Balkan species, are here used to test whether the putative Ohrid Valvata endemics represent an ancient lake species flock and to study patterns of speciation both on the Ohrid and the Balkan scale. The study reveals three distinct clades of endemic Valvata in Lake Ohrid. Monophyly of these taxa, however, is rejected, and they therefore do not represent an ancient lake species flock, but rather an ancient lake species scatter. Also, in contrast to many other gastropod groups in Lake Ohrid, the valvatids apparently did not radiate. Many Valvata taxa in ancient lakes are characterized by enhanced levels of shell complexity. However, it remains unclear whether these patterns are associated with ancient lake environments per se. It is here suggested that similarities in shell structure between North American and Balkan taxa might simply be due to convergent evolution.  相似文献

Recent evidence reveals that food webs within the Malili Lakes, Sulawesi, Indonesia, support community assemblages that are made up primarily of endemic species. It has been suggested that many of the species radiations, as well as the paucity of cosmopolitan species in the lakes, are related to resource limitation. In order to substantiate the possibility that resource limitation is playing such an important role, a study of the phytoplankton and zooplankton communities of Lake Matano was implemented between 2000 and 2004. We determined species diversity, relative abundances, size ranges, and total biomass for the phytoplankton and zooplankton, including the distribution of ovigerous individuals throughout the epilimnion of Lake Matano in three field seasons. The phytoplankton community exhibited very low biomass (<15 μg l?1) and species richness was depressed. The zooplankton assemblage was also limited in biomass (2.5 mg l?1) and consisted only of three taxa including the endemic calanoid Eodiaptomus wolterecki var. matanensis, the endemic cyclopoid, Tropocyclops matanensis and the rotifer Horaella brehmi. Zooplankton were very small (<600 μm body length), and spatial habitat partitioning was observed, with Tropocylops being confined to below 80 m, while rotifer and calanoid species were consistently observed above 80 m. Less than 0.1% of the calanoid copepods in each year were egg-bearing, suggesting very low population turnover rates. It was concluded that chemical factors as opposed to physical or biological processes were regulating the observed very low standing crops of phytoplankton which in turn supports a very minimal zooplankton community restricted in both species composition and abundance. As chemical factors are a function of the catchment basin of Lake Matano, it is predicted that resource limitation has long played an important role in shaping the unique endemic assemblages currently observed in the food web of the lake.  相似文献

The timely characterization of high-altitude freshwater habitats allows an assessment of the diversity of its biota and provides the basis for monitoring community change. In this study, we investigate the Cladocera fauna of 29 water bodies (pools, freshwater lakes, and surrounding swamps sampled at various occasions between 2005 and 2009) in the Rwenzori Mountains (Uganda, D. R. Congo), which are part of the East African Sky Island Complex. All sites except one are located above 3700 m altitude. We include notes on the morphology, taxonomy, distribution, and ecology of each recorded taxon and describe a new species of the Alona rustica-group (Alona sphagnophila n.sp.; Chydoridae). We found 11 species of which seven are restricted to Lake Mahoma, the lowest lake in our study area (2990 m) (Alona affinis barbata, A. intermedia, Alonella exisa, Alonella nana, Daphnia cf. obtusa, Pleuroxus aduncus) and/or Lake Bujuku (Daphnia cf. curvirostris, P. aduncus) (3900 m). Two taxa (Ilyocryptus cf. gouldeni, A. sphagnophila n.sp.) are restricted to Carex/Sphagnum bogs surrounding lakes in the afroalpine zone. Pigmented populations of Chydorus cf. sphaericus occur in all the sites. It is the only cladoceran species surviving the extreme alpine and nival conditions in the Rwenzori. The species is joined by A. guttata at locations at lower altitudes (ca. 3000–4000 m), present in about half of the sites. The Rwenzori Cladocera fauna is characterized by a strong extratropical temperate component and a low level of speciation/endemism. Harboring an impoverished boreal cladoceran community, Lake Mahoma is given closer attention. At 2990 m, the lake is a cold-temperate aquatic island in the tropics and may function as a stepping stone for Palaearctic taxa. We introduce a new term for high-altitude, cold-water habitats in the tropics, which act as climatic islands for extratropical freshwater faunas, Löffler Islands, in honor of Dr Heinz Löffler. In comparison to surveys in 1961, we list five new records in Lake Mahoma, which could indicate cladoceran community changes over the past few decades at ca. 3000 m in the Rwenzori. Since the species distributions correlate to temperature and catchment properties of the lakes, the Rwenzori cladoceran fauna can be expected as sensitive indicators for local changes.  相似文献
