Meiofauna communities of four intertidal sites, two sheltered and two more exposed, in Kongsfjorden (Svalbard) were investigated in summer 2001 at two different tidal levels (i.e. the low-water line and close below the driftline, referred to as mid-water (MW) level). A total of seven meiofaunal higher taxa were recorded with nematodes, oligochaetes and turbellarians being numerically dominant. Mean total meiofaunal densities ranged between 50 ind. 10 cm−2 and 903 ind. 10 cm−2. Our data showed a clear decrease in total meiofaunal densities with increasing coarseness of the sediment. Total meiofaunal biomass varied from 0.2 g dwt m−2 to 2 g dwt m−2 and, in general, was high even at low meiofaunal densities, i.e. larger interstitial spaces in coarser sediments supported larger meiofauna, especially turbellarians. The results on the vertical distribution of meiofauna contrasted sharply with typical meiobenthic depth profiles on other beaches, probably in response to ice-scouring and concomitant salinity fluctuations. Oligochaetes were the most abundant taxon, with a peak density of 641 ind. 10 cm−2 at Breoyane Island. They were mainly comprised of juvenile Enchytraeidae, which prohibited identification to species/genus level. Nematode densities ranged between 4 ind. 10 cm−2 and 327 ind. 10 cm−2. Nematodes were identified up to genus level and assigned to trophic guilds. In total, 28 nematode genera were identified. Oncholaimus and Theristus were the most abundant genera. The composition of the nematode community and a dominance of predators and deposit feeders were in agreement with results from other arctic and temperate beaches. Nematode genus diversity was higher at the more sheltered beaches than at the more exposed ones. Low-water level stations also tended to harbour a more diverse nematode communities than stations at the MW level. Differences in nematode community structure between low- and MW stations of single beaches were more pronounced than community differences between different beaches and were mainly related to resources quality and availability.  相似文献

Sandy intertidal zones were analysed for the presence of meiofauna. The material was collected on six macro-tidal sandy beaches along the North Sea (The Netherlands, France, Belgium), in order to analyse the vertical and horizontal meiofaunal distribution patterns. Eleven higher meiofauna taxa (one represented by larval stage—Copepoda nauplii) were recorded. The maximum total meiofauna abundance was observed on the Dutch beach (4,295±911 ind. 10 cm−2) in the Westerschelde estuary, while the lowest values (361±128 ind. 10 cm−2) were recorded in France at the Audresselles beach. Meiofauna of the different localities consisted mainly of nematodes, harpacticoids and turbellarians. Nematodes numerically dominated all sampled stations, comprising more than 45% of the total meiofauna density. Meiofauna was mainly concentrated at the sand surface with about 70% present in the uppermost 5 cm. Meiofauna occurred across the entire intertidal zone. A clear zonation pattern in the distribution of meiofauna taxa across the beaches was observed. The present work suggests that designation of exposed sandy beaches as physically controlled (McLachlan 1988) does not explain their biological variability.  相似文献

Meiofauna associated with a Pacific coral reef in Costa Rica   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The meiofauna of two coral reef habitats at Isla del Naño, Costa Rica was studied over a one year period. The dominant groups were: Foraminifera (21.2%), Copepoda (19.7%), Nematoda (19.1%), Gastropoda (16.5%), Polychaeta (7.2%) and Bivalvia (6.6%). The highest diversity was found in coarse, heterogeneous sands with the highest percentage of carbonates. The meiofauna showed a high degree of horizontal aggregation, which is a characteristic pattern for macro- and meiofauna in sediments of variable composition. No vertical variation in distribution was evident, probably due to the deep location of the Redox Potential Discontinuity layer. The total densities of organisms found in this study (99 to 575 ind/10 cm2) are low compared with densities in similar non-reefal sands (7 to 6116), and from fine sediments (80 to 17 000), but are comparable to densities found in other reef areas (39 to 609.5 ind/10 cm2). This is the first report on meiofauna from the eastern Pacific, and the first time that foraminiferans are the dominant group.  相似文献

Iceland is situated in an important subarctic transition area where complex oceanographic dynamics occur. The intertidal, subtidal, and deep-sea faunal communities of Iceland are being intensively studied, as a critical resource for continued sustainability of fisheries and the preservation of northern littoral ecosystems. However, the meiofaunal communities and the environmental factors affecting them are still relatively poorly known. The meiobenthic metazoan community was studied with core sampling in 23 sandy beaches along the intertidal zone of the Iceland coast in a campaign developed in September 2003. Small-scale variation in meiofauna composition (major taxa) was explored and related to biotic and abiotic factors at different scales, such as beach exposure, granulometry, and organic matter content. Differences in meiofaunal community structure at a low taxonomic resolution appeared among beaches located within wide biogeographical zones of hydrobiological significance (NE and SW Shelf regions) and exposure degrees. Seventeen major taxa were recorded. In contrast with more local and taxon-focused studies, oligochaetes were the dominant group all around Iceland, followed by nematodes, turbellarians, gastrotrichs, and copepods (mainly harpacticoids). Acari, ascidians, bivalves, cnidarians, collembolans, gastropods, isopods, kinorhynchs, insects, nemerteans, ostracods, and polychaetes were relatively scarce groups, together being less than 1.6% of the meiofauna. There was a large variation in meiofaunal abundance between sites. Maximum abundances (>500 ind. cm?2) were found in Sau?arkrökur, Hraunhafnartangi, and Skálaness, whereas minimum abundances (<40 ind. cm?2) were recorded in Magnavík, Jokülsárlón (glacier beach site), Vikurnúpur, Breidalsvík, and Stokknes. We did not find a clear pattern in overall meiofaunal abundance regarding the degree of exposure of beaches. Oligochaetes, nematodes, and copepods were relatively more abundant in sheltered beaches, whereas turbellarians and gastrotrichs tended to be more abundant in exposed beaches. The best correlates of meiofaunal composition and abundance within beaches were the proportion of gravels and the content of utilizable organic matter in the sediment. We should consider factors operating at wider scales (importantly beach exposure and overall situation in the complex oceanographical context of Iceland) to find a pattern in the local structure of intertidal meiofaunal assemblages.  相似文献

The composition and abundance of the meiofauna and macrofauna were studied in a survey carried out within 6 locations in a mangrove at the Island of Santa Catarina, South Brazil. Nine meiofaunal taxa were registered with densities ranging between 77 and 1589 inds.10 cm?2. The nematodes, composed by 94 putative species (86 genera), largely dominated the meiofauna. The most abundant genera were Haliplectus (Haliplectidae), Anoplostoma (Anoplostomatidae) and Terschillingia (Linhomoidae). Contrary to the meiofauna, the macrofauna showed a low number of taxa (only 17 recorded) and abundance (up 7250 inds.m?2). The macrofauna was mainly composed by deposit feeders, and numerically dominated by oligochaetes and capitellid polychaetes. For both components, differences in the composition and abundance along the sampling sites were significant but not primarily related to the typical variations along estuaries, such as salinity. The results of the stepwise multiple regression analyses showed that the detritus biomass (ash-free dry weight) was the most important predictor of faunal densities and diversity. The clear relationship between detritus and fauna, together with the contrasting community structure of the two component of the benthos suggest that the meiofauna showed a high efficiency in exploiting the micro-habitat created by the presence of the detritus. Yet the macrofauna, potentially the main consumer of the debris, is negatively affected by their low palatability and poor nutritive value.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of meiofauna in the sediments ofAvicennia marina,Bruguiera gymnorrhiza,Ceriops tagal,Rhizophora mucronata andSonneratia alba at Gazi Bay (Kenya), is described. Seventeen taxa were observed, with highest densities in the sediments ofBruguiera (6707 ind. 10 cm–2), followed byRhizophora (3998 ind. 10 cm–2),Avicennia (3442 ind. 10 cm–2),Sonneratia (2889 ind. 10 cm–2) andCeriops (1976 ind. 10 cm–2). Nematodes accounted for up to 95% of total densities; other common taxa were copepods, turbellarians, oligochaetes, polychaetes, ostracods and rotifers. High densities occurred to about 20 cm depth in the sediment. EspeciallyCeriops sediments show still high densities of nematodes (342 ind. 10 cm–2) and copepods (11 ind. 10 cm–2) in the deepest layer (15–22 cm). Particle size and oxygen conditions were major factors influencing meiobenthic distribution;Uca burrows had a major impact on distribution and abundance of meiofauna.  相似文献

To evaluate echinoderm distribution, abundance and density a double 50 m transect, with a side observation range of 2.5 m was used at each of 11 stations (bimonthly samplings, Aug. 1997-Febr. 1998). In Bahía de Loreto the Phylum Echinodermata consists of 26 taxa. The greatest mean abundance by transect and mean densities in order of importance for Echinoidea were: Echinometra vanbrunti (94.1 +/- 52.9 ind, 0.25 ind/m2), Centrostephanus coronatus (38.15 +/- 9.15 ind, 0.06 ind/m2), Tripneustes depressus (28.68 +/- 6.86 ind, 0.039 ind/m2), Eucidaris thouarsii (10.66 +/- 3.37 ind, 0.025 ind/m2) and Diadema mexicanum (11.75 +/- 4.92 ind, 0.023 ind/m2); for Asteroidea were: Phataria unifascialis, Mithrodia bradleyi and Acanthaster planci. Asteroidea was the dominant class with 12 species, followed by Echinoidea with ten and Holothuroidea was represented by four species.  相似文献

The meiofauna density in Martel Inlet, Admiralty Bay, King George Island (Antarctica) was studied in order to better understand the spatial patterns of meiofauna distribution in shallow polar seas. Sampling was undertaken by scuba-diving at 15 m depth at 7 stations during the summers of 1996/1997 and 1997/1998. The meiofauna was dominated by nematodes (>60%), followed by copepods, nauplii and polychaetes. The mean densities found during the 2 years studied (4.09 and 3.5᎒6 ind. m-2) suggest that the shallow area of Martel Inlet is characterized by higher numbers of meiofaunal organisms than are found in other ecosystems, which is in agreement with other meiofaunal studies carried out in polar areas. It may be concluded that it is mainly the sedimentary features that influence the meiofauna distribution. However, food availability must contribute to the support of the higher meiofauna densities found in the inlet.  相似文献

The metazoan meiofauna of nine stations in shelf break and upper slope areas (70 to 1500 m water depth) of the N.E. Atlantic were investigated in order to assess which environmental factors are important in the control of densities and sediment profiles. Total meiofaunal densities (ranging between 368 and 1523 ind/10 cm2) were correlated with bacterial densities, an important food source for meiofauna. However, considering sediment vertical distribution profiles, the relative importance of both food and oxygen on the meiofauna became obvious. A combination of both bacterial densities and oxygen supply could explain about 95% of the variability in the vertical profiles of the meiofauna densities. Meiofauna numbers increase in proportion to food availability in the surface sediment layers, but this relationship breaks down in deeper sediment layers where the oxygen supply is often limiting, particularly in fine sediments.  相似文献

A survey was conducted to examine spatial variations in the population density of major meiofaunal taxa and the assemblage structure of free-living marine nematodes within 5 mangrove areas on the west and east coast of Zanzibar. Meiofauna densities in surface sediments (0–5 cm) ranged from 205 to 5263 ind. 10 cm2, being on average 1493 ind. 10 cm2. Of the 17 major taxa recorded, nematodes dominated (64–99%) in all samples while harpacticoid copepods were usually second most abundant. Within all areas the numbers of meiofauna were very variable and significant differences among areas were only detected for oligochaetes and turbellarians. Densities of nematodes, harpacticoids, polychaetes and turbellarians were, however, significantly (P<0.001) higher at low water stations compared with mid and high water stations. Harpacticoids were negatively correlated with the numbers of fiddler crab (Uca spp.) burrows. Other correlations between environmental factors (grain size, temperature, salinity, oxygen tension, prop root density, fiddler crab burrows) and major meiofaunal taxa were non-significant. A total of 94 nematode genera were recorded from four mangrove areas. The most abundant and frequent genera were Microlaimus and Spirinia, followed by Desmodora and Metachromadora. Representatives of the genera most common in current study are found all over the globe. There was a high variation in nematode assemblage structure within and between sampling areas indicating the absence of a well defined nematode assemblage confined to mangrove areas. In a hypersaline area diversity was much reduced and where salinity was over 100%. the fauna was restricted to 3 nematode genera, Microlaimus, Theristus and Bathylaimus. Multidimensional scaling ordination (MDS) of the nematode genera separated samples taken from low water stations from other stations, the assemblage structure being significantly different at the low water stations. Numbers of selective deposit feeders were negatively correlated with average grain size and positively correlated with silt content.  相似文献

Tropical intertidal sediments often contain porewater of relatively high salinity, especially in areas exposed to longer periods without seawater inundation and high evaporation. Such an area exists on the west coast of Zanzibar: a high intertidal mangrove plateau, flooded only during spring high tides, with sediment porewater salinities commonly exceeding 100 ppt. A field survey was conducted in this area to examine variations in population density of major meiofaunal taxa and the assemblage structure of free-living marine nematodes during spring-neap tidal cycles. Samples were taken on seven occasions for two months, starting from the end of the rainy season. Porewater salinity remained high throughout the sampling period, ranging from 89 to 160 ppt. Neither spring tide inundation nor heavy rains lowered the salinity markedly. The meiofauna consisted only of four taxa, present on all sampling occasions: nematodes, harpacticoid copepods, plathyhelminthes and chironomids. Densities in surface sediments (0–5 cm) were low compared to other mangrove areas, ranging from 271 to 656 animals 10 cm-2 with nematodes dominant on all sampling occasions (58–87%). Density fluctuations could not be explained by the effects of spring tide inundation, but the meiofauna showed significant correlations with grain size and organic material. Despite the wide range of salinity, only the numbers of chironomids were negatively correlated with increased salinity. Nematode species diversity was low in all samples, although altogether 28 species were recorded in the samples. Four species occurred in more than 50% of the samples (Microlaimus sp. (100%), Metalinhomoeus sp. (76%), Daptonema sp.l (56%), Chromadorina sp. (56%)) while 12 species were found only in one or two samples. Multidimensional scaling ordination (MDS) of the nematode species abundance data indicated little effects of spring tide inundation on the assemblage structure, but rather a successive change from wet to dry season with a reduction in species diversity and increased numbers of the dominant nematode species Microlaimus sp.  相似文献

Permanent meiofauna taxa and portions of the population of other invertebrates that are temporarily in the meiofauna size class are often precluded from stream studies and assessments. This study was designed to determine the identity, density, and distribution of major meiofauna taxa relative to substrate size in a set of similar headwater streams. Using a coring technique, meiofauna (80 μm–1 mm) and substrate samples were collected from 11 Ozark headwater streams in the Boston Mountain ecoregion of Arkansas, USA. Mean meiofauna density among streams was 1739 ± 436 organisms per l. Permanent meiofauna taxa (Copepoda, Cladocera, Ostracoda, Rotifera, Nematoda, Hydrachnida, and Tardigrada) comprised 22.5% of the organisms collected with a mean density of 394 ± 233 organisms per l; temporary meiofauna taxa (Oligochaeta, Turbellaria, Hydroidea, Chironomidae, Ephemeroptera, and other insects) comprised the remainder with a density of 1346 ± 308 organisms per l. Chironomidae was the most numerous temporary meiofauna taxon, and Hydrachnida was the most numerous permanent taxon. Streams were found to differ significantly in substrate composition and densities of major taxonomic categories. Substrate size was found to predict densities for most of these taxonomic categories. Meiofauna patchiness was reflected in high variability within streams. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed positive associations between Copepoda and Nematoda and silt, and between Copepoda, Nematoda, and Rotifera and fine sand. Hydrachnida and Rotifera were negatively associated with silt and coarse sand, respectively. The potential value of inclusion of meiofauna in stream environmental assessments is discussed.  相似文献

Mainly cyanobacteria, but also algae and fungi, were identified on the Jesuit missions San Ignacio Miní, Loreto, Santa María and Santa Ana, in NE Argentina. Many organisms were deeply pigmented, indicative of stressful conditions. San Ignacio samples of itacurú rock showed higher colonization and biodiversity, related to higher porosity allowing entry of water and nutrients. Sandstone from other locations was arenitous, containing 95% silicates. Physicochemical analyses suggested mobilization of ions, particularly Fe, from within the stone to the surface. This intense deteriorating colonization, together with climatic weathering, transforms the sandstone to a “protosoil,” for growth of bryophytes and higher plants.  相似文献

Limnoperna fortunei (Dunker, 1857) (Bivalvia) invaded Argentina through the Río de la Plata estuary around 1990 and is presently established throughout five South American countries as a dominant component of the benthic fauna and a major nuisance for industry and power plants. Between 1997 and 2006 we monitored the reproductive activity of L. fortunei through weekly measurements of planktonic larvae in six South American water bodies: Río de la Plata estuary, Paraná and Carapachay rivers, Salto Grande, Itaipú and Embalse de Río Tercero reservoirs. Mean larval densities varied between 4000 and 7000 individuals m?3; except in the reservoirs of Itaipú (450 ind. m?3) and Salto Grande (869 ind. m?3), where the mussel was first recorded shortly before our surveys, and upstream dispersal is limited (Salto Grande). In all cases, reproductive output decreases during the winter. At four of the six sites surveyed larval densities were comparatively high for 8.8–10.2 months per year. A lower food supply is possibly responsible for the shorter reproductive period of 5.9 months at Embalse. At Salto Grande, there is a well‐defined mid‐summer drop in larval numbers, coinciding with blooms of cyanobacteria. We propose that, in addition to temperature, two major factors may regulate the reproductive activity of L. fortunei: (i) the availability of food; and (ii) blooms of toxic cyanobacteria, significantly shortening the otherwise very long reproductive period. This information is important for the design of antifouling programmes involving the use of molluscicides, and has potential for reduced biocide use. These results provide supporting evidence for some fundamental ecological theories of invasions discussed here.  相似文献

The meiofauna of two tidal beaches, one exposed and one more sheltered, on Bjornoya (Bear Island) was investigated in summer 2000. Both meiofaunal densities and composition seem to be controlled by physical properties of the sediment, which in turn are controlled by exposure. The moderately and poorly sorted sediments in the sheltered beach were more abundant in terms of meiofaunal densities than the well sorted sediments in the exposed beach (254–481 individuals in 10 cm2 vs 7–269 individuals in 10 cm2, respectively). In total, seven higher meiofaunal taxa were found. Turbellaria were the numerically dominant taxon in the exposed beach. In the sheltered beach, Turbellaria also dominated, followed by Nematoda and Harpacticoida. The vertical distribution of the meiofauna was in accordance with what has been reported from other intertidal beaches. Nematoda were studied in detail and their densities ranged over 0.7–7.7 individuals in 10 cm2 in the exposed beach and 2.7–186.0 individuals in 10 cm2 in the sheltered beach. Nematodes were identified to genus level and a total of eight nematode genera were found. Sediment community respiration, measured as oxygen consumption, ranged between 2.3 cm3 O2 m–2 h–1 in the exposed beach and 7.3 cm3 O2 m–2 h–1 in the sheltered beach (respectively, the equivalent of 24 mg and 75 mg of organic carbon metabolised per day). Values from the sheltered site are within the range of results registered in much warmer localities.  相似文献

Summary The distribution and abundance of shallow subtidal meiofauna in four habitats in the Niantic and Pettaquamscutt estuaries in southeastern New England were studied from October 1964 through October 1965. Numbers of individuals ranged from 1,184 to 5,163/10 cm2, and wet weights from 8.5 to 62.5 mg/10 cm2. Nematodes were the dominant group, averaging 83% of the total numbers and 64% of the total biomass. Among the nematodes, epigrowth-feeding species were dominant at all four stations; in addition, deposit-feeding species were abundant at three stations where the amount of detritus was high relative to the fourth station. At these three stations ostracods and deposit-feeding polychaetes were also abundant.Nematodes showed marked seasonal changes i their species composition, with epigrowth-feeding species reaching maximum densities in spring and summer (coincident with observed increases in benthic microflora production), and deposit and omnivorous-feeding species in fall and winter (coincident with observed increases in organic detritus). Increases in the epigrowth feeders were responsible for significant increases in the total nematode populations in spring and summer.Ostracods were most abundant in late summer, fall and winter in association with the increases in detritus. Polychaetes, amphipods and lamellibranchs were most abundant in summer, the first-named in association with elevated water temperatures. Harpactacoid copepods were inconsistent in their seasonal distributions.Approximately 80% of the meiofauna occurred in the upper 3 cm of sediment. Copepods and ostracods were virtually limited to the upper 3 cm, while amphipods and lamellibranchs were limited to the upper 2 cm of sediment. The objective of the study was to characterize seasonally and locally the reproduction of Pirapitinga do Sul (Brycon opalinus). The study area included three rivers (Paraibuna, Ipiranga, and Grande) in the Santa Virgínia Unit of the Serra do Mar State Park, State of S?o Paulo, Brazil. Breeding occurred in spring, summer, and autumn. The L(50) and the L(100) of this species were 16 to 18 cm and 26 to 28 cm, respectively. Spawning was total, with synchronous development in two groups. The size of mature oocytes was 1,346.4 microm, reaching a maximum of 2,570.4 microm, with a mean fecundity of 9,190.5 oocytes. This species has external fertilization, is non-migratory, and lacks parental care of the young. Preservation of the Pirapitinga do Sul depends, in great part, on maintaining water quality, preservation of the riverine forests, and access to breeding areas.  相似文献

Tubificid and enchytraeid oligochaetes are common members of the interstitial fauna of sandy beaches. Their abundance dynamics, life cycles and distribution patterns were investigated at two beaches on the western Baltic Sea and at a North Sea beach (Isle of Sylt). Populations of 115,000 ind./m2 were found at protected Baltic beaches. Reproduction of the tubificids, Phallodrilus monospermathecus and Spiridion insigne takes place within a well defined breeding period once a year. The market horizontal and vertical distribution patterns of various tubificid and enchytraeid species are elucidated by preference reactions to several physiographic parameters, such as oxygen and water content of the sediment, and salinity.  相似文献

根据2006年12月至2007年11月对乳山近海的调查样品,报道了该海域大型底栖动物功能摄食类群的生态学状况.结果表明:乳山近海大型底栖动物以食底泥者和肉食者占较大优势,其次为滤食者,食碎屑者、杂食者、植食者相对丰度较小;食底泥者的优势种为中蚓虫、不倒翁虫、丝异蚓虫和轮双眼钩虾,肉食者的优势种为寡鳃齿吻沙蚕、圆筒原盒螺和纽虫,滤食者的优势种为滑理蛤、菲律宾蛤仔、金星蝶铰蛤和江户明樱蛤;各功能摄食类群分布受有机负荷和底质类型限制;基于大型底栖动物功能类群的生态参数评价结果表明,乳山近海大型底栖动物群落健康状况由虚弱趋于不稳定,大部分站位大型底栖动物群落受到轻度扰动,底栖生态质量状况较优良;冗余分析表明,盐度、水温、总氮、悬浮物、溶解氧、总有机碳和硅酸盐等7个因子与乳山近海大型底栖动物功能摄食类群存在较显著的相关性.  相似文献

Summary The grass shrimp Palaemonetes pugio, a suspected predator/disturber on meiofauna, and other large natant forms (>2 mm) were selectively excluded from microecosystem tanks for nine months during which time replicability between the tanks was established. Subsequently, shrimp were reintroduced into one of the four tanks via an aquarium and the meiofauna populations monitored in the shrimp and control tanks. In the presence of the predator/disturber, total meiofauna, nematode, oligochaete, and polychaete densities were significantly lower than in control tanks. Shrimp predation/disturbance significantly reduced meiofauna abundance in this salt marsh habitat but it did not alter the species diversity of the dominant taxon.
