The objective of this study was to evaluate the suitability of heat- and freeze-killed oothecae of Periplaneta americana (L.) (Dictyoptera: Blattidae) as hosts for parasitoid Aprostocetus hagenowii (Ratzeburg) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae). The oothecae were subjected to -20, 45, 48, 50, and 55 degrees C at different exposure times (15, 30, 45, and 60 min). The effects of heat- and freeze-killed oothecae on several biological parameters (e.g., parasitism and emergence rates, developmental times, progeny number, and sex ratio) ofA. hagenowii were determined. Embryonic development of 2-d-old oothecae was terminated by either freezing at -20 degrees C or heating at > or = 48 degrees C for > or =30 min. A. hagenowii parasitized live oothecae as well as both heat- and freeze-killed oothecae. Percentage parasitism, emergence rates, and developmental times ofA. hagenowii in both heat- and freeze-killed oothecae were not significantly different from those of the live oothecae. Both heating and freezing did not influence progeny number (male and female) and sex ratio of A. hagenowii emerged from killed oothecae.  相似文献

本文报道了寄生于烟色大蠊Periplaneta fuliginosa(Serville)卵荚内的两种啮小蜂:Tetrastichus hagenowiiTetrastichodes sp.,并讨论了Tetrastichus hagenowii的生物学特性。所收集的(虫非)蠊卵荚中,该蜂的自然寄生率为50.38%。观察14枚卵荚的出蜂数,最多为202只/枚,最少为10只/枚,平均为74.92只/枚。雌雄性比为1:0.42。该蜂4月上旬开始出现,5—8月是繁殖高蜂期,11月上旬则少见。接蜂的8枚卵荚孵出的成蜂平均存活12.8天(14.4天.10.2天)。蜂在卵荚内的发育时间与温度有关,在夏季比在秋冬季显著为短。成蜂的产卵期较长:而且除产卵于新鲜(虫非)卵荚内,也产卵于已产出7天以上的卵荚内。本文的观察结果为人工繁殖该啮小蜂用以防治室内(虫非)蠊提供了科学依据。  相似文献

The effects of sublethal concentrations of chlorpyrifos, cyfluthrin, and hydramethylnon on adult longevity and fecundity of German cockroaches, Blattella germanica (L.), were investigated. Longevity of males declined linearly with increasing doses of insecticide. An LD50 of cyfluthrin decreased male longevity by 52%, whereas an LD50 of hydramethylnon reduced male longevity by 81%. Longevity of females increased linearly with increasing sublethal doses of chlorpyrifos, whereas all doses of both cyfluthrin and hydramethylnon decreased longevity of females. Fecundity increased linearly with increasing sublethal doses of chlorpyrifos. Number of oothecae formed, oothecae hatched, and number of offspring produced in each ootheca increased with increasing sublethal concentrations of chlorpyrifos. In contrast, fecundity declined with increasing sublethal concentrations of cyfluthrin and hydramethylnon. Formation of the first ootheca occurred approximately 8 d after mating for untreated females but generally longer with sublethal concentrations of all insecticides. The period between oothecae hatch and the formation of subsequent oothecae increased with successive oothecae in all treatments.  相似文献

The development of the Asian cockroach, Blattella asahinai Mizukubo, was studied under laboratory conditions. Immature development and adult longevity were 67.8 and 103.5 d for females and 65.7 and 48.5 d for males. Females produced an average of 3.7 oothecae, 64.6% of which were viable. Viable oothecae contained an average of 37.5 eggs with an 88% rate of hatch. Females required 13 d after eclosion to produce the first ootheca and 7.9 d between dropping one ootheca and producing the next. Viable oothecae were incubated an average of 19.2 d. Nonviable oothecae were either dropped within 4 d or carried for a period similar to the incubation period of viable oothecae. The estimated lifetime reproductive potential of female Asian cockroaches was 79.6 hatched eggs. This estimate is similar to that of another outdoor species, Blattella vaga Hebard, but approximately one half that of the closely related German cockroach, B. germanica (L.), under similar conditions. Tests in the field and laboratory indicated that chemical control is feasible with application of residual pesticides to lawns and low vegetation where Asian cockroaches are found.  相似文献

Contrasting scales of oviposition and parasitism in praying mantids   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We report on spatial patterns of parasitism of oothecae (egg cases) of praying mantises (Stagmomantis limbata) by torymid wasps, Podagrion spp. Using collections of mapped mantid oothecae from Riparian sites in the Sonoran desert and Grassland sites in the Chiricahua Mountains (both in Arizona, USA), we characterized the spatial distributions of oothecae and parasitism. The likelihood of an egg case suffering some parasitism was higher at Grassland sites, which had high oothecal densities, than at low-density Riparian sites. However, experimental isolation of Grassland oothecae to densities comparable to Riparian sites reduced parasitism rates. At Riparian sites, parasitized oothecae exhibited on average the same extent of parasitism as parasitized oothecae at high densities but with much greater variation. Indeed, large fractions of Riparian oothecae suffered both severe (>50%) and light (<20%) parasitism, whereas most parasitized Grassland oothecae suffered intermediate levels of parasitism. Analysis of first nearest neighbor distances indicated that the parasite load of an ootheca did not depend on its immediate isolation. However, extending the analysis to include subsequent nearest neighbors (using a technique from spatial statistics called the R(K) function), we found that even though oothecae of S. limbata were spatially clustered, some oothecae in a (statistically defined) cluster escaped parasitism when overall oothecal densities were low. This pattern suggests that when oothecae are sparsely distributed, Podagrion wasps exploit only a fraction of the oothecae available locally, even though the oothecae are strongly aggregated relative to their overall density. We suggest this lack of congruency in the scales of oothecal deposition and parasitism at low densities (which is absent when oothecae are at high densities) may be explained in part by behavioral aspects of the parasite's reproduction, including increased host fidelity by relatively sedentary female parasites. 哈氏啮小蜂Tetrastichus hagenowii(Ratzeburg)是卫生害虫蜚蠊的重要天敌昆虫, 能寄生多种蜚蠊种类的卵荚, 被认为是控制蜚蠊危害最具潜力的天敌昆虫。本文对哈氏啮小蜂雌蜂的繁殖生物学特性进行了系统研究。结果表明: 哈氏啮小蜂行孤雌生殖和两性生殖的繁殖方式, 两性生殖其子代雌蜂所占比例为46.02%, 而孤雌生殖其子代均为雄性。经解剖镜检证实: 雌蜂发育至性成熟时的两侧卵巢结构呈现为, 每侧卵巢有8~12根卵巢管, 每根卵巢管怀卵量约1~6粒。结果发现雌蜂发育日期影响其怀卵数量, 1日龄哈氏啮小蜂怀卵量低, 平均为45.2粒/♀; 2日龄哈氏啮小蜂怀卵量较高, 平均为80.1粒/♀。哈氏啮小蜂羽化后即性成熟产卵, 产卵期为4~11 d, 日产卵量为0.86~7.57粒/♀, 单雌一生平均寄生1枚美洲大蠊卵荚。供试寄主卵荚密度是影响哈氏啮小蜂寄生率的重要因素, 在蜂卵荚比例为1∶5, 1∶3, 1∶2, 1∶1, 2∶1和3∶1范围内, 哈氏啮小蜂对卵荚的寄生率随着雌蜂数量与寄主卵荚比例的提高而增加, 然单雌寄生卵荚数量却呈下降趋势。  相似文献

A combination of a sterile insect technique, resulting in infertile eggs, and of an egg parasitoid, should provide better control of codling moth than either alone. Non-choice laboratory experiments were conducted with infertile and fertile codling moth eggs to evaluate the potential parasitism and reproduction of Trichogramma cacoeciae Marchal and T. principium Sug. et Sor. The tendency of T. cacoeciae females to attack infertile eggs was similar to that for fertile eggs, whereas T. principium showed a greater preference for infertile eggs than fertile eggs. The fertility status of the host did not affect the number of eggs that were parasitized but fewer F1 progeny emerged from infertile eggs when parasitized than from fertile eggs. When T. cacoeciae and T. principium parasitized infertile host eggs their mean developmental time was prolonged but the viability and quality of parasitoid progeny was not influenced by the fertility status of the host eggs. The study demonstrates the compatibility of use of T. cacoeciae and T. principium in an integrated program employing the sterile insect technique for codling moth management.  相似文献

Diets containing two gout medications, allopurinol and sulfinpyrazone, were fed ad libitum to first- or second-instar German cockroaches for 15 wk or until 100% mortality was reached. Cockroaches fed greater than or equal to 0.10% allopurinol diets weighed significantly less than those fed the control diet. Mortality of cockroaches fed diets containing greater than or equal to 0.05% allopurinol was significantly greater than those fed the control diet. The LT50 (6.1 wk) of cockroaches fed diets containing 0.10% allopurinol was significantly less than those fed any other diet containing allopurinol. LT50s and slopes were proportional and inversely related, respectively, to percentage of allopurinol in the diet. The addition of sulfinpyrazone to allopurinol diets minimally enhanced the blatticidal nature of the diets. Nymphs fed diets containing greater than or equal to 0.05% allopurinol experienced significant delays in adult emergence. Cockroaches fed greater than or equal to 0.01% allopurinol diets aborted a significantly greater percentage of their oothecae than those fed the 0.001% allopurinol or control diets. Hatched oothecae from cockroaches fed the 0.01% allopurinol diet had significantly fewer nymphs than those fed the 0.001% allopurinol or control diets. Percentage of oothecae aborted and number of nymphs per hatched ootheca from cockroaches fed a 2% sulfinpyrazone diet did not differ significantly from the control.  相似文献

Longevity and lifetime fecundity were significantly reduced after topical application of LC10, LC20, and LC60's of chlorpyrifos-methyl to 2-d-old female German cockroaches, Blattella germanica (L.). Low concentrations (LC10 and LC20) often resulted in failure of the first ootheca to hatch. This effect is temporary, and greater than or equal to 90% of subsequent oothecae hatched normally. Application of an LC60 also resulted in a high percentage of abortions of first oothecae, but also caused greater than 15% inviability in subsequent oothecae.  相似文献

Evania appendigaster (L.) is a solitary endoparasitoid of oothecae of the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (L.). In this work we report our studies on the parasitism of P. americana oothecae by E. appendigaster and the biological characteristics of this egg parasite, as it is affected by host density and mating. Cockroach oothecae were presented for individual females at different densities (one, two, three, four, five and six oothecae) during 2 days of exposition time. Reproduction was determined to be biparental and arrhenotokous. Host density did not influence sex ratio and longevity. The greatest reproductive efficiency of the females occurred in the first 14 days of their lifetime. At higher densities low parasitism rates were accompanied by a high percentage of dead oothecae. The percentage of parasitism decreases with increase in host density.  相似文献

Insects have evolved numerous adaptations and colonized diverse terrestrial environments. Several polyneopterans, including dictyopterans (cockroaches and mantids) and locusts, have developed oothecae, but little is known about the molecular mechanism, physiological function, and evolutionary significance of ootheca formation. Here, we demonstrate that the cockroach asymmetric colleterial glands produce vitellogenins, proline-rich protein, and glycine-rich protein as major ootheca structural proteins (OSPs) that undergo sclerotization and melanization for ootheca formation through the cooperative protocatechuic acid pathway and dopachrome and dopaminechrome subpathway. Functionally, OSP sclerotization and melanization prevent eggs from losing water at warm and dry conditions, and thus effectively maintain embryo viability. Dictyopterans and locusts convergently evolved vitellogenins, apolipoprotein D, and laminins as OSPs, whereas within Dictyoptera, cockroaches and mantids independently developed glycine-rich protein and fibroins as OSPs. Highlighting the ecological-evolutionary importance, convergent ootheca formation represents a successful reproductive strategy in Polyneoptera that promoted the radiation and establishment of cockroaches, mantids, and locusts.  相似文献

Formulations used for control of German cockroaches, Blattella germanica (L.), were investigated. The insecticides tested on gravid females were bendiocarb, chlorpyrifos, cyfluthrin, cypermethrin, fenvalerate, hydramethylnon, malathion, propetamphos, propoxur, and pyrethrins. Exposure to each insecticide increased the frequency of oothecal drop and reduced the percentage oothecal hatch. The percentage of oothecae that were dropped increased as a curvilinear function of insecticide concentration. An LD50 of propoxur to female German cockroaches resulted in the greatest oothecal drop (83.50%); fenvalerate caused the least drop (22.60%). LD50's of cypermethrin, propetamphos, and propoxur resulted in 29.60, 31.807, and 37.30% hatch from dropped oothecae, respectively. The smallest percentage hatch from retained oothecae was caused by LD50's of propoxur (1.5%) and cyfluthrin (7.70%). Retained oothecae from females treated with an LD50 of fenvalerate (68.70%) or pyrethrins (68.70%) had the greatest percentage hatch. Total percentage hatch (dropped and retained oothecae) declined exponentially as the insecticide concentration increased. An LD50 of cypermethrin limited total oothecal hatch to 24.50%, whereas LD50's of fenvalerate, malathion, and pyrethrins resulted in 53.60, 52.20, and 58.90% hatch, respectively. Mean time to oothecal hatch increased linearly with increasing insecticide concentration for all insecticides tested.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to verify the occurrence of parasitism in Atta laevigata (Smith) by phorids in Porto Nacional, Tocantins, Brazil and to evaluate some biological characteristics of those flies. From October/2002 to September/2003, at 15-day intervals, 22 samplings were carried out (149.5 +/- 82.9 workers each) comprising 3,704 ants. In the laboratory, the ants were distributed in groups of five individuals per petri dish and maintained at temperature of 25 +/- 1 masculineC and 80 +/- 5% of RH. They were fed daily with a 50% honey solution until death. The total of 106 workers (2.8%), collected with or without load (plant fragment), were parasitized by phorids: 72 workers (68%) were parasitized by Apocephalus vicosae Disney, 28 individuals (26.4%) by Neodohrniphora erthali Brown, and six (5.6%) by Apocephalus attophilus Borgmeier. The higher parasitism rates by A. vicosae (3.9-5.4%) were observed during the dry season (June-August), while the parasitism by N. erthali was lower than 2.3% throughout the year. The bigger workers were parasitized by bigger parasitoid N. erthali or by parasitoid with larger number of larvae A. attophilus. The occurrence of three phorid species in Tocantins broadens the distribution of these flies in Brazil. The development of A. vicosae larva within the thorax of the host as well as the rupture between the ant pronotum and propleuron so that the emergence of the fly can take place are characteristics not yet described on parasitism of leaf-cutting ants by phorids.  相似文献

The parasitoid Anagyrus kamali Moursi was recently introduced into the Caribbean as a biological control agent against the hibiscus mealybug, Maconellicoccus hirsutus Green. In the laboratory, parasitoid size, as measured by left hind tibia length, was positively correlated with several indicators of the parasitoid's fitness: longevity, mating preference, fecundity, reproductive longevity, progeny emergence and sex-ratio. When fed ad libidum with honey drops, large male parasitoids lived significantly longer (29.1 +/- 6.5 days) than small ones (18.4 +/- 5.7 days). Large females also lived significantly longer (35.4 +/- 10 days) than small females (27.9 +/- 9.6 days). Females showed no significant mating preference between large and small males. Lifetime fecundity was positively correlated with the size of adult females and ranged from 37 +/- 21 eggs for small females to 96 +/- 43 eggs for large ones. The reproductive longevity, daily oviposition rate, and number of progeny were also higher among large parasitoids. The sex ratio of progeny from small female parasitoids was higher (0.76 +/- 0.24) than that of large individuals (0.47 +/- 0.18).  相似文献

Microplitis kewleyi Muesebeck is a gregarious internal parasite of larvae of the black cutworm Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel). Studies of the biology of the parasite revealed that there was an inverse relationship between host instar and parasite preference. Duration of development from egg to pupa ranged from 18 days at 27°C to 68.7 days at 16°C. Development from egg to pupa took 13.5–21.6 days when fourth and first instar host larvae, respectively, were parasitized. A larger number of parasites emerged from hosts parasitized in the fourth instar (22.4) than the first instar (11.5). Parasite pupation occurred when the host was in the fifth/sixth instar, depending on the instar parasitized. Thirty‐nine per cent of host larvae exposed as first instars to parasites died before parasite emergence. This decreased to 0% for host larvae exposed as fourth instars. The sex ratio was 1:1.2 (M:F). Thirty‐seven per cent of hosts exposed diurnally were stung, compared to 24% exposed nocturnally. Mean daily progeny was highest (12) on the first day, decreasing to zero after 20 days. Percent host parasitism was also highest on the first day (35%) decreasing to nearly 0% after 18 days. There appear to be three parasite larval instars. Host larvae often remained alive after parasite emergence.  相似文献

The basal termite Mastotermes darwiniensis produces an egg mass, the nature of which is controversial. The debate centres on whether it is homologous with the oothecae of mantids and cockroaches and, if so, whether its simple structure is plesiomorphic or apomorphic within the Dictyoptera. To help resolve these issues we observed primary reproductives of M. darwiniensis during oviposition and examined the morphology of the reproductive product. Oviposition is cockroach-like in that the egg mass is assembled within the vestibulum and the eggs are issued externally in pairs. The reproductive product is an ootheca of the blattarian type. A distinct, tanned outer covering is stretched over the two parallel rows of eggs. No keel is present and no calcium oxalate crystals were apparent in the outer covering. We cannot rule out the possibility that the simple structure of the ootheca is plesiomorphic within Dictyoptera. However, based on (i) apomorphies shared by Mastotermes and Blattaria, and (ii) the life habits of Isoptera, a secondary reduction is the more plausible explanation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Of sixty-seven adult female Periplaneta americana (L.) isolated when less than 8h old and kept without food at 25–30°C in LD 12:12, only six produced oothecae during 25–35 days. Growth of the basal oocytes was retarded, and maximal oocyte volume, only one-third of that in fed virgins, was achieved after about 12 days. By day 14, 60% of the basal oocytes were being resorbed in the starved females, and corpora lutea were usually all that remained beyond day 20. Oocyte growth was potentiated in starved, virgin females by severing either of the two nervi corporis allati 1 (NCA 1), and oothecae were then produced in 45–80% of cases. Sham-operated controls oviposited in fewer than 27% of the trials. Because oocyte maturation was prevented by extirpating both corpora allata (CA), but not when the glands were replaced, and because the juvenile hormone analogue, ZR 515, was highly effective in causing the starved cockroaches to produce oothecae, the starvation-induced reproductive failure probably reflects diminished hormone production by the CA. The most likely consequence of severing NCA 1 is de-repression of juvenile hormone production. The directness of the neural influence was shown by removing the one denervated CA, in which case stimulation of oogenesis was minimal even though the contralateral innervated gland was present. The incidence of ootheca production was not enhanced by transecting the NCA 2, which suggests that the CA of starved cockroaches are not inhibited via this pathway.  相似文献

Nezara viridula L. and Euschistus servus (Say) are the predominant species of phytophagous stink bugs on corn, Zea mays L., in Georgia. Oebalus pugnax pugnax (F.) occurs in relatively low numbers, and the predatory stink bug Podisus maculiventris (Say) is commonly found. Limited information is available on natural biological control of these four stink bug species in Georgia corn fields; therefore, a 6-yr study of parasitism and predation of their eggs was initiated in 2003. Naturally occurring stink bug eggs were parasitized by six scelionid species, Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston), T. thyantae Ashmead, T. brochymenae (Ashmead), T. euschisti (Ashmead), Telenomus podisi Ashmead, Telenomus calvus Johnson, and one encyrtid species, Ooencyrtus sp. T. basalis was the most prevalent parasitoid of N. viridula, parasitizing E. servus and P. maculiventris eggs at low levels. T. podisi, the predominant parasitoid species emerging from eggs of E. servus and P. maculiventris, also parasitized O. p. pugnax eggs exclusively and parasitized N. viridula eggs at low levels. T. euschisti and T. thyantae parasitized E. servus egg masses. T. brochymenae parasitized eggs of both E. servus and P. maculiventris. T. calvus parasitized only P. maculiventris eggs. The same species of egg parasitoids that parasitized naturally occurring eggs of N. viridula and E. servus parasitized sentinel eggs of these bugs, except that no T. calvus and Ooencyrtus sp. were obtained from sentinel eggs, and T. thyantae and T. brochymenae emerged from sentinel eggs of N. viridula. Generally, parasitization of an egg mass was either greater than or equal to predation of sentinel eggs of N. viridula and E. servus. However, on some dates in late June and July, predation of sentinel egg masses was numerically approximately twice as high as parasitism. Results indicate stink bug egg parasitoids and predators are significant factors in the natural biological control of stink bugs in corn fields.  相似文献

Topical and oral toxicity of sulfluramid (N-ethyl perfluorooctane sulfonamide) were determined for the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.). The topical LD50 of sulfluramid was 175.6 micrograms/g for adult males, 117.8 micrograms/g for adult females, and 122.3 micrograms/g for gravid adult females. Ingestion increased toxicity approximately 1.4 times for adult male B. germanica. Twenty-four hours after topical treatment with 20 micrograms/insect sulfluramid, the percentage of female cockroaches that dropped their oothecae increased approximately 50% compared with controls treated with acetone. Sulfluramid also decreased oothecal hatch of both dropped and retained oothecae. Approximately 90% of oothecae from untreated females hatches, whereas less than 20% hatched from females treated with 20 micrograms/insect. Mean time for oothecal hatch increased linearly with increasing sulfluramid concentration. In arena studies in Ebeling choice boxes, LT50's ranged between approximately 2.3 and 3.9 d for a 0.331 mg/cm2 deposit and a 1.5% bait, respectively. Higher concentrations of sulfluramid were more repellent in both bait and residual formulations. Performance index values indicated excellent potential field efficacy. Field trials with 1.0 and 1.5% (AI) baits showed up to a 71.3% reduction in cockroach numbers. Baits controlled cockroaches throughout the 12-wk test.  相似文献

Egg masses of Nezara viridula (L.) are commonly parasitized by Trissolcus basalis (Woll.), and we investigated the role of size of egg masses on parasitization by T. basalis. Sentinel egg masses were exposed to parasitism in the field for 6–7 days, when they were collected for evaluation of parasitoid emergence. We recorded the number of eggs per egg mass, the number of emerged hosts, and the number of empty and parasitized eggs. We calculated the proportion of attacked host egg masses (DE), the proportion of parasitized eggs per attacked egg mass (PE), and total parasitism (PI). The total number of egg masses exposed to parasitism was 330. The minimum, mean, and maximum egg mass sizes were 25, 75.2, and 111, respectively. DE and PE varied widely between different fields, and they were independent of egg mass size. In 14.2% of all parasitized egg masses, we found simultaneous emergence of T. basalis and N. viridula independently of host egg mass size. PE exhibited low variability compared with PI and DE, which were linearly related. PI and DE values from other field studies are consistent with the linear relationship, suggesting that PI is mostly related to the proportion of the DE. This also suggests that total parasitism is independent of egg mass size, of possible differences in plant species, and T. basalis density and strains.  相似文献
