Women have made important scientific contributions to the field of neurochemistry, and they have also been leaders in neurochemical societies throughout the world. Here I discuss women's involvement and leadership in six neurochemistry societies: American Society for Neurochemistry, Argentine Society for Neurochemistry, International Society for Neurochemistry, European Society for Neurochemistry, Japanese Society for Neurochemistry, and Asian-Pacific Society for Neurochemistry. The number of women who have been active in these societies and the level of their activity vary considerably. Neurochemical societies in the Western hemisphere, i.e., the American and the Argentine Society for Neurochemistry, have much greater numbers of women who have held office, been on council, or engaged in other leadership activities than in the rest of the world. The limited participation of women in the Japanese Neurochemistry Society relates to Japanese cultural views and was not unexpected. However, the relatively few women leaders in the International Society for Neurochemistry was a surprise. The European Society had a somewhat better record of female participation than did the International Society. The reasons for these differences are partly cultural, but factors related to when each society was formed, how it is organized, and how elections are structured undoubtedly play a role. One of the major endeavors of the International Society for Neurochemistry (ISN) is the promotion and support of young researchers, for instance at ‘schools’ that offer young students an opportunity to closely interact with renowned researchers as well as with each other. As a result of the 13th International Society for Neurochemistry Advanced School on ‘Synapses’ held in Mission Beach, Australia, prior to the Biennial Meeting of the International Society for Neurochemistry in August 2016 in Cairns, we are pleased to publish this comprehensive Review article, written from students for students. Summary Ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) were fed hypertonic saline for eight days, resulting in an activation and hypertrophy of the salt gland. The Na+–K+-dependent adenosine triphosphatase, an enzyme generally assumed to be part of the active Na transport system, increased its specific activity by about 200% during this activation. Sulfatides, the major glycolipids of the salt gland, increased their concentration to the same extent. Cholesterol, cerebrosides, and six phospholipid classes showed an increase of 20–80%.A preliminary report on this work was given at the Second International Meeting of the International Society for Neurochemistry, Milan, September 1–5, 1969, and at the XIIIth International Conference on the Biochemistry of Lipids, Athens, September 7–12, 1969.  相似文献

Summary The effect of a direct-current electric field on cephalin and lecithin films was measured using infrared spectral techniques. The intensities of the spectral bands assigned to the vibrations of the phosphate and the fatty acid chain increased to a maximum as the applied potential was increased. These changes were observed only with brain cephalin and brain lecithin films and not with synthetic lipid films. These observations may be due to changes in the alignments of the phosphate and base dipoles in the lipid molecule as the applied field is changed. The electric field strengths at which the maximum intensities of the spectral bands are observed increase as the thickness decreases. Extrapolation to the thickness of the nerve membrane yields a value of the field strength that is much larger than is to be expected in the neuron. This suggests that only the phosphate group and the hydrocarbon chain change conformation during the passage of the nerve impulse.Presented in part at the First Meeting of the International Society for Neurochemistry, 1967, and the 156th Meeting of the American Chemical Society, 1968.  相似文献

“Neurochemistry” in Japan was established by intensive cooperation between psychiatrists and their collaborators, biochemists, who have sought to investigate the etiology of mental illness to establish treatments. It was a completely different direction from the flow of modern biochemistry that was born using microorganisms or eukaryotic cells as research materials. Neurochemists aimed to elucidate the physiological or pathological functions of the brain through chemical analysis of the morphologically and functionally unique complexity and characteristics of brain. I here describe some of the origin and history of neurochemistry in Japan how researchers estabIished Japanese Society for Neurochemistry in1958 Yasuzo Tsukada as a president in collaboration with Isamu Sano, Genkichiro Takagaki and Masanori Kurokawa. The formation of research groups with the support of MEXT played a major role in promoting neurochemistry. Many international conferences held in Japan promoted the activity of neurochemistry: The International Society of Physiology (Tokyo) in 1965, and the Japan-US Neurochemistry Conference (Oiso) in 1965, and in 1967 the International Conference on Biochemistry (Tokyo). These meetings offered excitements to younger researchers by close interaction with the world top class researchers. Government established Brain Research Institutes in several national universities. The Asia–Pacific Society for Neurochemistry (APSN) was established in 1991 subsequent to an initiative by JSN. APSN presidents: Yasuzo Tsukada, Kazuhiro Ikenaka, and Akio Wanaka contributed to promote neurochemistry. The 4th ISN meeting was organized at Tokyo (Yasuzo Tsukada, president) in 1973 and the 15th ISN meeting at Kyoto (Kinya Kuriyama, president) in 1995. Kunihiko Suzuki and Kazuhiro Ikenaka as ISN Presidents greatly contributed in promoting the activity of ISN.

Axonal regulation of Schwann cell glycolipid biosynthesis   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Schwann cell biosynthesis of glycolipids was studied by in vitro incorporation of [3H]galactose into neonatal rat sciatic nerves before and after endoneurial explant culture and in culture of purified Schwann cells. In neonatal nerves prior to culture, [3H]galactose was actively incorporated into galactocerebrosides (GalCe), monogalactosyl diacylglycerol (MGDG), and the sulfatides (Su). In contrast, the incorporation of [3H]galactose into MGDG, GalCe, and Su was nearly undetected in endoneurial explants after 4 days in vitro (div). Instead, there was increased3H-labeling of glucocerebrosides (GlcCe) and its homologues, with tetrahexosylceramides (GL-4) being a major product, which continued through 8 div. This shift in glycolipid biosynthesis was further demonstrated in the purified Schwann cell cultures. A total of 63 binary polymorphisms and 10 short tandem repeats (STRs) were genotyped on a sample of 2,344 Y chromosomes from 18 Native American, 28 Asian, and 5 European populations to investigate the origin(s) of Native American paternal lineages. All three of Greenberg's major linguistic divisions (including 342 Amerind speakers, 186 Na-Dene speakers, and 60 Aleut-Eskimo speakers) were represented in our sample of 588 Native Americans. Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis indicated that three major haplogroups, denoted as C, Q, and R, accounted for nearly 96% of Native American Y chromosomes. Haplogroups C and Q were deemed to represent early Native American founding Y chromosome lineages; however, most haplogroup R lineages present in Native Americans most likely came from recent admixture with Europeans. Although different phylogeographic and STR diversity patterns for the two major founding haplogroups previously led to the inference that they were carried from Asia to the Americas separately, the hypothesis of a single migration of a polymorphic founding population better fits our expanded database. Phylogenetic analyses of STR variation within haplogroups C and Q traced both lineages to a probable ancestral homeland in the vicinity of the Altai Mountains in Southwest Siberia. Divergence dates between the Altai plus North Asians versus the Native American population system ranged from 10,100 to 17,200 years for all lineages, precluding a very early entry into the Americas.  相似文献

Sera from patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and those obtained from normal subjects are indistinguishable by regular 5% or 7% polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. However, 11 out of 15 MS sera examined by gradient polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed three distinct protein bands. None of the sera obtained from 10 normal subjects showed the characteristic protein patterns when they were examined by gradient gel electrophoresis. Similar results were obtained with de-albumin serum samples or with serum proteins precipitable at 50% ammonium sulfate saturation. These three proteins have now been purified to homogeneity by preparative gradient gel electrophoresis. Molecular weights of these proteins were estimated from gradient gel electrophoresis as 398,000, 363,000, and 302,000 daltons, respectively.This work was presented at the Tenth Annual Meeting of American Society for Neurochemistry on March 12, 1979, in Charleston, South Carolina.  相似文献

Ten minutes after a single injection of 0.8 mg/kg nicotine SC (free base) the level of substance P-like immunoreactivity (SPLI) was reduced by 61–73% in rat caudate-putamen, nucleus accumbens, and olfactory tubercle, with smaller and not significant reductions in the frontal cortex, substantia nigra, and ventral tegmental area. The nicotinic receptor antagonist mecamylamine (1.0 mg/kg IP) prevented the reductions in SPLI. The rapidity and the degree of the changes in SPLI after nicotine exceed those previously reported for other agents and implicate substance P neurotransmission as a major component of nicotinic action.Preliminary data were presented at the 17th annual meeting of the American Society for Neurochemistry, Montreal, 1986 (1).  相似文献

Neotropical ants in the tribe Attini share the obligatory behaviour of cultivating fungi as an essential food source. Of this complex and well-studied mutualism, little is known about the biological traits of the phylogenetically basal attines, which may offer important clues to the origins and early evolution of this intricate symbiosis. In this paper we focus on the founding of new nests, a key to understanding evolutionary changes in many social insects, which has received comparatively little attention in attine ants. We present a comparative survey of nest-founding behaviour in Attini, based on 441 foundress nests of 20 species in eight attine genera. In general, attine queens are semiclaustral and haplometrotic when founding nests. We show that attine foundresses of most species use an inert platform (discarded forewings, roots, or rocks) on which the incipient fungal garden is physically isolated during nest foundation, and they conduct semiclaustral foundation. This behaviour is not shared with Atta , which places the incipient garden directly on the soil floor of the initial nest chamber, and conducts claustral foundation. Nest-founding maps congruently onto the major clades in attine phylogeny, suggesting that the behavioural mechanisms used to isolate the incipient garden may have been key innovations in the early evolution of attine fungiculture. The evolutionary sequence of gardening in Attini suggests a transformation series from retention and use of detached wings (suspended from the chamber ceiling or placed over the chamber floor) to root-suspension, and finally use of bare soil. The timely topics in this symposium were contributed by more than 20 internationally acclaimed scientists and attended by more than 100 participants interested in this subject matter. Since the spinal cord and peripheral nerves are vulnerable to the effects of vitamin E deficiency, vitamin E concentrations in various discrete regions of these parts of the nervous system of the rat were determined. Furthermore, as acrylamide toxicity and vitamin E deficiency share some neuropathological features, tissue vitamin E concentrations in acrylamide-treated rats were also studied. Male Sprague Dawley rats (200 to 250 g body weight) were fed normal rat chow with or without 0.03% acrylamide in their drinking water. After 24 days, the animals were sacrificed and the tissues assayed for vitamin E by a liquid chromatographic method. Vitamin E concentrations decreased from cerebral cortex to spinal cord with no concentration gradients between different levels of the spinal cord. Sciatic nerve concentration of alpha tocopherol was as high as that of cerebral cortex, and the former also contained measurable amounts of gamma tocopherol. Vitamin E concentrations in the majority of nervous tissue samples remained unchanged with acrylamide treatment.Presented in part at the Sixteenth Annual Meeting of the American Society for Neurochemistry, March 1985.  相似文献

Fifty years after the founding of the field of medical anthropology, the Society for Medical Anthropology of the American Anthropological Association held its first independent meeting on September 24-27, 2009, at Yale University.Fifty years after the founding of the field of medical anthropology, the Society for Medical Anthropology of the American Anthropological Association held its first independent meeting on September 24-27, 2009, at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. The conference, Medical Anthropology at the Intersections, drew an international audience of more than 1,000 scholars.In her opening remarks, program Chair Marcia Inhorn noted that medical anthropology has been interdisciplinary since its inception. This assertion was supported at a roundtable discussion, Founding Medical Anthropology and the Society for Medical Anthropology, which featured four of the field’s founders.Asked to identify the factors that led to the development of medical anthropology, the panelists emphasized the role of changes in the practice and landscape of medicine in the late 1950s and early 1960s in the United States. According to Hazel Weidman, who helped spearhead the Society for Medical Anthropology, medical personnel sought social scientists’ guidance in the new clinical environments created by the increasing involvement of U.S. physicians in global development work and by the community-oriented approach to mental health encouraged by the Community Mental Health Act of 1963. The novel inclusion of lifestyle as a determinant of health at this time also played a role, according to Clifford Barnett. Norman Scotch, author of a 1963 review that had helped define medical anthropology as a field, noted that physicians at the time were very interested in the possible applications of the social sciences to medicine [1,2]. Joan Ablon recalled that this emphasis on application led some academic anthropologists to dismiss the medical anthropologist as a “handmaiden to the doctors.” Despite such resistance, interest in medical anthropology as a sub-field was clearly growing among anthropologists. When Weidman helped organize the first gathering of medical anthropologists at an anthropology conference in 1967, attendance was twice what was expected. Panel organizer Alan Harwood noted that the Society for Medical Anthropology transformed its newsletter into a professional journal, Medical Anthropology Quarterly, in 1983. According to Inhorn, the society has 1,300 members today.For the panelists, medical anthropology’s potential for application makes it a compelling scholarly pursuit. As Barnett stated in explaining his decision to work in anthropology: “If you know how a society works, you can change it.”  相似文献

Radiation chemistry studies began in the early 20th century with observations involving the decomposition of various materials by X rays and radium. Hugo Fricke recognized that the chemical effects of radiation should be studied to help understand the response of living systems to radiation, and in 1928 he established a laboratory to conduct such studies. Early radiation chemists were intimately involved in the founding of the Radiation Research Society and contributed substantially to its interdisciplinary culture. In this historical review, the highlights of research in radiation chemistry leading up to the founding of the Radiation Research Society in 1952 are discussed. The status of the field is established at that point, and a sampling of the major accomplishments from then until the present is presented, with emphasis on those scientists who have contributed substantially to the life and culture of the Radiation Research Society.  相似文献

This report was intended to summarize the significant happenings in the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, and its affiliates, from the end of the annual meeting in 1973 to the end of the 1978 annual meeting. It was decided to not include our sister organizations--the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons--because their historians publish periodic reports about their activities. I am sure that the future reports of historians will record with pride the continued growth and development of plastic surgery, because the future of our specialty has never seemed brighter.  相似文献

Dr Ernst Mayr has been one of the seminal figures of 20th century biology. His essential contributions were in the development of the Modern Synthesis in evolutionary biology. His landmark book Systematics and the Origin of Species, was published in 1942 and has long been acknowledged as one of the key foundations of 20th century evolutionary biology. In many subsequent articles and books on evolution and the history and philosophy of biology during the past half century, he has continued to be a key contributor of ideas and inspiration to successive generations of evolutionary biologists. In the first of two ‘Roots’ articles, he describes the early stages of his career and the serendipitous events that furthered it. This article was first presented as a talk, on October 27, 1993, at the 50 year Jubilee celebration of the founding of the Whitney wing, the ornithological section, of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. In next month's ‘Roots’ article, Dr Mayr will describe the events that led to the founding of the Society for the Study of Evolution in 1946, in St Louis, Missouri.  相似文献
