Parasites that are sexually transmitted (causing sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs) can have important effects on host population dynamics, but we know almost nothing for such parasites about constraints on fecundity and transmission. In this study, we have examined the effect of two potentially important constraints in one of the few empirically well-studied animal-STD systems, the ladybird, Adalia bipunctata , and its sexually transmitted mite, Coccipolipus hippodamiae . Using a factorial design, we manipulated: (i) within-host competition, by varying infection intensity; and (ii) host condition, by introducing dietary stress. Infection with C . hippodamiae significantly reduced ladybird survival whether or not diet was restricted, and restricting diet led to reduced survival regardless of infection status. Increased infection intensity and reduced host condition (dietary stress) both independently constrained per capita rates of parasite egg production and the development of infective larvae. Furthermore, when host condition was compromised, significantly fewer larvae were transmitted per adult mite during copulation. The effect of infection intensity on per mite transmission was more complex: there was no significant effect when hosts were fed normally, but when the ladybirds were nutritionally stressed higher infection intensity was associated with a slight increase in the numbers that were transmitted (despite the fact that mite fecundity was reduced under these conditions). These results indicate that host condition and within-host competition may both play an important role in shaping the epidemiology of the A . bipunctata – C . hippodamiae system, by influencing the parasite's basic reproductive ratio (R0) and the rate of epidemic spread. Our data also extend general insights into STD ecology, by highlighting the importance of constraints on disease dynamics that are likely to be widespread.

Summary When the phoretic mite Poecilochirus carabi reproduces in the brood chamber of its carrier Necrophorus vespilloides, a beetle with biparental brood care, the first deuteronymphs of the new mite generation aggregate on the male beetle. They do not use sex-specific traits to discriminate between male and female beetles in the brood chamber, but traits that are related to the beetles' behaviour and may be displayed by both parent beetles. When the male beetle departs, it carries virtually all deuteronymphs then present in the brood chamber. Deuteronymphs that develop later congregate on the female, which leaves the crypt some days after the male. Only those deuteronymphs that miss the female's departure disperse on the beetle larvae, meaning they have to wait in their pupal chambers until the beetles have completed their development. On average, 86% of the deuteronymphs leave the brood chamber on the parent beetles, thereby gaining the advantage of an early departure. As soon as their carrier arrives at one of the beetles' meeting places, the deuteronymphs can transfer between the beetles present. Choice experiments revealed that the deuteronymphs tend to even out density differences between congregating carriers, and prefer sexually mature to immature beetles. Therefore, transferring between beetles results in a dispersion of deuteronymphs on the sexually mature beetles of the population.

The community structure, stable isotope ratios (15N/14N, 13C/12C) and reproductive mode of oribatid mites (Acari, Oribatida) were investigated in four habitats (upper tree bark, lower tree bark, dry grassland soil, forest soil) at two sites in the Central Alps (Tyrol, Austria). We hypothesized that community structure and trophic position of oribatid mites of dry grassland soils and bark of trees are similar since these habitats have similar abiotic characteristics (open, dry) compared with forest soil. Further, we hypothesized that derived taxa of oribatid mites reproducing sexually dominate on the bark of trees since species in this habitat consume living resources such as lichens. In contrast to our hypothesis, the community structure of oribatid mites differed among grassland, forest and bark indicating the existence of niche differentiation in the respective oribatid mite species. In agreement with our hypothesis, sexually reproducing taxa of oribatid mites dominated on the bark of trees whereas parthenogenetic species were more frequent in soil. Several species of bark-living oribatid mites had stable isotope signatures that were similar to lichens indicating that they feed on lichens. However, nine species that frequently occurred on tree bark did not feed on lichens according to their stable isotope signatures. No oribatid mite species could be ascribed to moss feeding. We conclude that sexual reproduction served as preadaptation for oribatid mites allowing them to exploit new habitats and new resources on the bark of trees. Abiotic factors likely are of limited importance for bark-living oribatid mites since harsh abiotic conditions are assumed to favor parthenogenesis.

Changes in the timing of life history events within the year alter the degree to which the activity patterns of different species coincide, making the dynamics of interspecific interactions sensitive to the phenology of the interacting parties. For parasites, the availability of suitable hosts to infect represents a crucial determinant of dynamics, and changes in the host (and parasite) phenology may thus alter disease epidemiology and the conditions for disease maintenance. We tested the hypothesis that the incidence of a sexually transmitted mite infection, Coccipolipus hippodamiae, in Adalia bipunctata ladybird beetles in Sweden was determined by host phenology, namely presence/absence of sexual contact between cohorts of the host. We observed that the pattern of mite presence/absence across Swedish A. bipunctata populations was highly reproducible between years, implying a persistent biological/ecological basis underlying the incidence. Further, ladybirds from populations where the mite was absent were able to acquire mites during copulation, develop a mite infection, and transmit infection onward, indicating an ecological (rather than biological) driver of mite incidence. Observations of ladybird phenology in natural populations provided evidence of sexual contact between overwintered and new cohort adults in populations where the mite was present. In contrast, new cohort ladybirds in the two northern Swedish populations where the mite was not present had not had sexual contact with the overwintered generation, creating a ‘hard stop’ to mite transmission. We conclude that variation in host phenology may be an important driver of the incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) by determining the presence/absence of sexual contact between generations. More generally, we hypothesize that sensitivity to variation in host phenology will be highest for parasites like STIs that infect one host species, one host life stage and are directly transmitted on contact between host individuals.

Oligonychus coffeae Nietner (Acari: Tetranychidae), the red spider mite (RSM), is a major pest of tea (Camellia sinensis) in most tea-producing countries. Nymphs and adults of RSM lacerate cells, producing minute characteristic reddish brown marks on the upper surface of mature leaves, which turn red in severe cases of infestation, resulting in crop loss. The pest is present on tea all the year round, although numbers vary depending on season. Their number increases as the weather warms up and decreases markedly once rains set in. Under optimal conditions there may be 22 overlapping generations in a year. Parthenogenesis is known to occur; consequently, all mite stages can be found at a given time. Their infestation is mainly confined to the upper surface of the mature leaves and could readily be identified by the bronzing of the leaf. There are several naturally occurring insect predators, such as coccinellid and staphylinid larvae, lacewing larvae, and mite predators, most importantly species of the families Phytoseiidae and Stigmaeidae. Integrated management has been adopted to control this mite pest, involving cultural, mechanical, physical, biological and chemical methods. This review collates the most important works carried out on biology, ecology and management of O. coffeae. Also the scope of future studies for better management of this regular mite pest of tea is discussed.

Milkweed leaf beetles (MLBs; Labidomera clivicollis Chrysomelidae) are parasitized by a subelytral mite, Chrysomelobia labidomerae (Tarsonemina: Podapolipidae). We show that C. labidomerae is transmitted between MLBs when they copulate, and can reduce the survival of nutritionally stressed beetles. We investigated the effect of this sexually transmitted parasite on mate choice and male-male competition in MLBs, and the consequences of variation in these behaviours for mite transmission. We found no evidence of parasite avoidance by MLBs, and evidence for high rates of parasitism in the MLB populations we surveyed. In the absence of females, parasitized males contacted unparasitized males more often and for longer than controls, and they tended to displace rival males from females more often than did unparasitized males, a result consistent with the interpretation that parasitized beetles compensate for loss of fitness by increasing reproductive effort. These changes can also benefit mites, because longer and possibly more contacts between beetles provide more opportunities for transmission, but there is no evidence that these changes in male behaviour result from parasite manipulation.

The continental dispersal of an exotic spider mite species is described for the first time. The cassava green mite,Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar) (Acari: Tetranychidae), has been found to be dispersed across the cassava belt of Africa in less than 10 years after first being discovered in 1971. This mite disperses within plants by walking, and within and between fields by drifting aerially. Widespread transportation of mite-infested plant material, however, is proposed to explain the rapid spread ofM. tanajoa in Africa. Observations of mite-infested plant material being transported in the field, and laboratory evidence of mite populations surviving up to 60 days on cassava stems removed from the field and isolated from external contaminates, support this hypothesis. The spread ofM. tanajoa in Africa as a model for future introductions on cassava suggests a pattern of movement at species-specific rates. Exotic natural enemies ofM. tanajoa, especially phytoseiid predators, are expected to spread at a rate slower than their host; consequently, large-scale and long-range releases will be needed to accelerate their spread.

Social animal species present a vast repertoire of social interactions when encountering conspecifics. Reproduction-related behaviors, such as mating, parental care, and aggression, are some of the most rewarding types of social interactions and are also the most sexually dimorphic ones. This review focuses on rodent species and summarizes recent advances in neuroscience research that link sexually dimorphic reproductive behaviors to sexual dimorphism in their underlying neuronal circuits. Specifically, we present a few possible mechanisms governing sexually-dimorphic behaviors, by hypothalamic and reward-related brain regions. Sex differences in the neural response to social isolation in adulthood are also discussed, as well as future directions for comparative studies with naturally solitary species.

The influence of week of season, leaf position on plants, population size and population growth rate on twospotted spider mite adult and functional sex ratio was determined for wild populations found on field corn. Adult sex ratio became less female biased as the mite population per plant increased. Adult sex ratio became increasingly female biased at higher leaf positions on the plant. Population growth rate (measured as proportion eggs in the population) was positively correlated with the proportion females in the adult population. Functional sex ratio (ratio of sexually available females to males) was positively influenced by population growth rate. The other factors studied only slightly influenced this parameter. Ecological implications of these findings are briefly discussed.

Sexual transmission is a widespread means of infection, but apart from those in humans, the ecology of sexually transmitted organisms is not well known. In this study, we present an ecological study of a sexually transmitted mite, Parobia husbandi Seeman and Nahrung (Acari: Podapolipidae), that lives beneath the elytra of Chrysophtharta agricola (Chapuis) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). In each of 2 yr, prevalence of mites on beetles began each spring at about 10-20% but gradually increased to 80-100% by late summer. Overlap of adult beetle generations at this time (i.e., the parental generation mating with the F1 generation) is essential for the persistence of these mites. Mites exhibited temporal change in their spatial distribution on beetles; these changes were probably a response to beetle activity (e.g., emergence from diapause) and the need for dispersal from parental to F1 generation beetles. Prevalence and mean intensity of mites was higher on female beetles compared with male beetles. Female bias of sexually transmitted infection has been predicted in animals but hitherto observed only in primates. We speculate that variable male mate-finding success is the cause of these sex-based differences of mite infections, and that female bias in sexually transmitted disease (STD) infection will be widespread in the animal kingdom.

Elaborate sexually selected ornaments and armaments are costly but increase the reproductive success of their bearers (usually males). It has been postulated that high-quality males can invest disproportionately more in such traits, making those traits honest signals of genetic quality. However, genes associated with such traits may have sexually antagonistic effects on fitness. Here, using a bulb mite Rhizoglyphus robini, a species in which a distinct dimorphism exists between males in the expression of a sexually selected weapon, we compare inbreeding and gender load between lines derived from armed fighters and unarmed scramblers. After four generations of sib-mating, inbreeding depression for female fitness was significantly lower in fighter-derived lines compared to scrambler-derived lines, suggesting that fighter males had significantly higher genetic quality. However, outbred females from fighter-derived lines had significantly lower fitness compared to outbred females from scrambler-derived lines, demonstrating significant gender load associated with the presence of a sexually selected male weapon. Our results imply that under outbreeding, genetic benefits of mating with bearers of elaborate sexually selected traits might be swamped by the costs of decreased fitness of female progeny due to sexually antagonistic effects.

The broad mite,Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Acari: Tarsonemidae), is an important, and in some cases recent, pest of diverse crops in tropical and subtropical regions. Infested leaves become bronzed with down-curling margins, buds are aborted and flowers distorted, shoots grow twisted and fruit may be misshapen and russeted. Injuries, presumably due to toxins, occur even after the broad mite is killed by pesticides. There is no evidence thatP. latus transmits plant viruses, but injury may be mistaken for virus or herbicide damage. The mite infests plants referable to ca 55 dicotyledone and two monocotyledone families as well as to the Cupressaceae. Changes in horticultural practices, including control measures, could have caused recent pest outbreaks. The mite may raise a generation in 1 week under optimal conditions (ca 25°C and high relative humidities) and deposit ca. 40 eggs/ female. The usual sex ratio is 1:4 male: female and reproduction is arrhenotokous. Dispersal is effected through male carriage of pharate females as well as by winds, insects (especially whiteflies) and man. Field sampling is facilitated by the pest's aggregated distribution. Control options comprise plant resistance, pesticides and biocontrol. Areas for future research include the possible emergence of sibling species or feeding strains, better understanding of the mite's reproduction, the effects of host plants on life history parameters, monitoring for pesticide resistance and exploration for additional natural enemies of the broad mite.

The red palm mite (Raoiella indica), an invasive pest of coconut, entered the Western hemisphere in 2004, then rapidly spread through the Caribbean and into Florida, USA. Developing effective sampling methods may aid in the timely detection of the pest in a new area. Studies were conducted to provide and compare intra tree spatial distribution of red palm mite populations on coconut in two different geographical areas, Trinidad and Puerto Rico, recently invaded by the mite. The middle stratum of a palm hosted significantly more mites than fronds from the upper or lower canopy and fronds from the lower stratum, on average, had significantly fewer mites than the two other strata. The mite populations did not vary within a frond. Mite densities on the top section of the pinna had significantly lower mite densities than the two other sections, which were not significantly different from each other. In order to improve future sampling plans for the red palm mite, the data was used to estimate the variance components associated with the various levels of the hierarchical sampling design. Additionally, presence-absence data were used to investigate the probability of no mites being present in a pinna section randomly chosen from a frond inhabited by mites at a certain density. Our results show that the most precise density estimate at the plantation level is to sample one pinna section per tree from as many trees as possible.

Short-range predator–prey interactions among small soil-dwelling arthropods are poorly understood. In this study, we measured the behavioural interactions between the predacious mite Hypoaspis aculeifer Canestrini (Gamasida: Laelapidae) and its collembolan prey Folsomia fimetaria L. (Collembola: Isotomidae) and the influence of sex, size, starvation, and poisoning with the organophosphate dimethoate. Pairs of mite and springtail were placed in 18-mm diameter test arenas with a plaster of Paris substrate and their behaviour were measured by a computerized vision system, which automatically detected the locomotory activity of the two animals, their encounters, and the precise time of capture and killing. Data suggest that neither the mite nor the springtail possesses near-field sensory detection of the opponent. A Cox regression model showed that mite sex, size ratio between the predator and prey, average mite velocity, and encounter rate had a significant influence on the mite-capture efficiency (springtail survival). Female H. aculeifer demonstrated higher capture efficiency than males by catching and killing their prey after fewer encounters. Surprisingly, starvation had only a moderate effect on the mite locomotory behaviour and no influence on the capture efficiency as such. Also, springtail survival was independent of its moulting stage. Sublethal poisoning with dimethoate, on the other hand, dramatically increased the mite's capture rate, probably by impeding the evasive response of the springtail.

There is substantial variability among populations of the same species in basic features such as abundance or niche breadth, and it is unclear to what extent these are true species traits as opposed to the product of local environmental factors. In parasites, abundance and niche breadth, i.e. host specificity, show repeatability among different populations of the same species, but may also be influenced by external forces, depending on the parasite taxa studied. We tested whether the abundance and host specificity of gamasid mites parasitic on small mammals from 26 different geographic regions of the Palaearctic, are species-specific or instead determined by host identity and/or parameters of the biotic and abiotic environment. Values of abundance and host specificity (measured as the number of host species used) were significantly more similar among populations of the same mite species than among different mite species; despite also showing consistency within particular host species or regions independently of mite species identity, both abundance and the number of host species used appear to be true mite species traits. In contrast, the taxonomic distinctness of host species used by a mite showed little repeatability among populations of the same mite species, and appears mostly determined by the local pool of available host species. Within given mite species, all three variables (abundance, number of host species used, and their taxonomic distinctness) covaried to some extent with one or more environmental factors (e.g., nature of the local host assemblage, temperature, precipitation) across geographical regions, but there was no universal pattern among results from different mite species. These results are similar to those obtained earlier on other taxa, e.g. fleas, and suggest that there are general laws acting on spatial patterns of parasite abundance and host specificity.

We evaluated the relationships between plant water status and leaf temperature, and between leaf temperature and spider mite (Acari: Tetranychidae) and predatory mite (Acari: Phytoseiidae) populations in eight vineyards in California in 2006 and 2007. Temperature of south-facing leaves increased significantly by 0.8°C for every 1.0°C increase in ambient air temperature, and by 5.3°C for every one MPa drop in leaf water potential. Peak population densities of Pacific spider mite, Tetranychus pacificus McGregor, increased significantly with increasing frequency of leaf temperatures above 31°C. In contrast, peak population densities of Willamette spider mite, Eotetranychus willamettei (McGregor), showed no relationship with the frequency of leaf temperatures above 31°C. This differential relationship between the two mite species and high leaf temperatures is consistent with their upper thresholds for development, which are 40°C for T. pacificus and 31°C for E. willamettei, as identified in a previous study. Predatory mite population densities showed no relationship with peak population densities of either spider mite species during the analysis period, but decreased with the frequency of leaf temperatures above 31°C. In addition, predatory mite population densities were significantly higher on south-facing than interior leaves after adjusting for the effect of leaf temperature. These results help to explain why outbreaks of T. pacificus occur in warmer or water-stressed vineyards, whereas E. willamettei develops higher populations in cooler or well-irrigated vineyards. In addition, these results suggest that regulated deficit irrigation should be implemented with caution, especially in those vineyards with a high risk of T. pacificus outbreaks.

Mites have simple life styles and overlapping generations, thus analysis of their populations using stable theory (Lotka's equation) is particularly appropriate. While use of this demographic framework is widespread among mite researchers, the specific context in which it is applied is typically restricted to the conventional life table and associated parameters. In this paper we extend the use of the basic principles of stable population theory in mite populations to include: (i) expectation of future life expectancy and reproduction; (ii) effect of developmental time on population growth rate; (iii) sensitivity analysis of a two-sex model; (iv) distribution of biomass and productivity in stable mite populations; (v) demographic theory of kinship as applied to mites; and (vi) mite mass-rearing. Implications of each are briefly discussed in the context of mite ecology and management.
