The aim of study was to analyze epidemiological features of central nervous system (CNS) tumors diagnosed in Istria County, Croatia, with a particular emphasis on incidence dynamics during the wartime (1991-1995). The data were extracted from the medical records of patients with CNS tumors admitted to the Department of Neurology of Pula General Hospital in the period from the 1st January 1986 to the 31st December 2000, N = 364. For calculation of rates, we used data from the 2001 Croatian consensus http://www.dzs.hr/Eng/Census/census2001.htm. Data are presented as counts and incidence rates (IRs) per 100,000 persons-years in the case of annual rates. Annual incidence rates are shown as "raw" incidence rates and smoothed 5-year rolling average rates. The examined patient-related variables were: sex, age, occupation, premorbidity and comorbidity, with a particular emphasis on psychosomatic disorders and negative habits. The analyzed tumor-related variables included clinical manifestation, localization, and applied diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Primary tumors were separated from the metastatic, and the latter were analysed with respect to their site of origin. The lowest incidence of CNS tumors (10 patients) was reported in 1990, and the highest (42 patients) in 1993. The incidence dynamics of CNS tumors showed a rapidly progressive increase over the 1991-1995 period, followed by the return to average values. The access to a better and more readily available diagnostics may only partially explain this phenomenon. Therefore, we analyzed other factors that may have contributed towards the rapid increase in the number of CNS tumors, such as its coincidence with the war or psychotrauma. The results confirm the observational clinical hypothesis of an extreme increase in the number of CNS tumors during the period under consideration.  相似文献

The bacterium Clavibacter michiganense subsp. nebraskense (Corynebacterium michiganense subsp. nebraskense) was grown in broth cultures and inoculated into corn plants. The plating efficiency of cells from broth cultures was essentially the same on nutrient broth-yeast extract and the semiselective medium for this bacterium, CNS. However, when cells were isolated from Goss bacterial wilt- and blight-infected corn, very few were recovered on CNS compared with the amount recovered on nutrient broth-yeast extract agar. When lithium chloride was omitted from the CNS, recoveries from infected corn were nearly the same as on nutrient broth-yeast extract agar. No other ingredient of CNS was inhibitory, nor did substitution of other salts for lithium chloride cause equal inhibition. The amount of inhibition was proportional to lithium chloride concentration. The inhibition by lithium chloride occurred with several strains of the bacterium isolated from one corn cultivar and with one of the strains recovered from three different cultivars of infected corn.  相似文献

Viral variants of different phenotypes are present in the central nervous system (CNS) and lymphoid tissues of carrier mice infected at birth with the Armstrong strain of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus. The CNS isolates are similar to the parental virus and cause acute infections in adult mice, whereas the lymphoid isolates cause chronic infections associated with suppressed T-cell responses. In this study, we provide a molecular basis for this organ-specific selection and identify a single amino acid change in the viral glycoprotein that correlates with the tissue specific selection and the persistent and immunosuppressive phenotype of the variants. This phenylalanine (F)-to-leucine (L) change at position 260 of the viral glycoprotein was seen in the vast majority (43 of 47) of the lymphoid isolates, and variants with L at this residue were selected in spleens of persistently infected mice. In striking contrast, isolates with the parental sequence (F at residue 260) predominated (48 of 59 isolates) in the CNS of the same carrier mice. Complete nucleotide sequence analysis of the major structural genes of several independently derived (from different mice) spleen isolates showed that these variants were greater than 99.8% identical to the parental virus. In fact, the only common change among these spleen isolates was the F----L mutation at residue 260 of the glycoprotein. These results show that an RNA virus can exhibit minimal genetic drift during chronic infection in its natural host, and yet a single or few mutations can result in the organ-specific selection of variants that are markedly different from the parental virus.  相似文献

The results presented in this work were obtained with two citrus genotypes, the chloride-tolerant Cleopatra mandarin (Citrus reshni Hort. ex Tan.) and the chloride-sensitive Carrizo citrange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb. × Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf.]. The data show that chloride uptake under salinization is driven by passive forces. In both species, net rates of chloride root uptake increased linearly, without saturation, with the increase of external NaCl concentrations (30–240 mol m–3). Uptake rates, on a μ g g root dry weight–1 h–1 basis, in Cleopatra and Carrizo decreased (from 38 to 21) and increased (from 21 to 35), respectively, with the increase (about three-fold) of the shoot to root ratio. With the appropriate shoot to root ratio in each genotype, it was demonstrated that at identical external doses of NaCl, Cl uptake rates and Cl xylem concentrations in the two species were very similar. Root pruning and defoliation showed that the amount of chloride taken by the plant was a function of the size of the root system, whereas leaf chloride concentration, the parameter responsible for salt damage, was dependent upon leaf biomass. Measurements of water transpiration suggested that chloride root uptake and leaf accumulation might be linked to water absorption and transpiration rates, respectively. The data indicate that plant morphology is a crucial factor determining salt-tolerance in citrus.  相似文献

Extrinsic, host-associated environmental factors may influence postmating isolation between herbivorous insect populations and represent a fundamentally ecological cause of speciation. We investigated this issue in experiments on hybrids between the host races of Eurosta solidaginis, a fly that induces galls on the goldenrods Solidago altissima and S. gigantea. To do so, we measured the performance of parental host races and their hybrids on five genotypes of S. gigantea and nine genotypes of S. altissima to test hypotheses about how variation in plant genotype affects performance (i.e., fitness) and potentially influences gene flow between these host races. We found that rates of gall induction and of survival to adult emergence by hybrid larvae were significantly lower than those of both parental host races on both host species, adding support to the hypothesis that there is partial postmating isolation between the host races. Hybrid flies significantly varied in their performance across plant genotypes of both host species. A significant interaction between the effects of plant genotype and mating treatment (parental vs. hybrid crosses) on larval performance indicated that the relative suitability of particular plant genotypes differed between the parental host races and their hybrids. These patterns illustrate a poor correspondence between optimal parental and hybrid environments, consistent with the hypothesis that these host races are partially isolated due to extrinsic (ecological) factors. Based on these findings, we discuss the possibility that plant genotypes in which hybrid performance is high can facilitate hybridization and gene flow between partially reproductively isolated populations of herbivorous insects, thus affecting the dynamics of ecological speciation.  相似文献

Species composition, distribution, and abundance of oligochaetes in the Kanawha River, West Virginia, were investigated. Eighteen taxa of oligochaetes including 7 tubificids, 8 naidids, and representatives of the families Enchytraeidae, Lumbriculidae, and Aelosomatidae were collected. While most of the species collected are cosmopolitan, Pristina synclites and Stephensoniana sp. previously reported only from Asia and Africa were collected in the Kanawha. Other peculiarities of the Kanawha oligochaete fauna included the common occurrence of specimens of Limnodrilus cervix and Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri with atypical penis sheaths. The dominant and most widely distributed of the Kanawha River oligochaetes were immature tubificids lacking capilliform chaetae, Branchiura sowerbyi, Dero cf. obtusa, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, and Aulodrilus pigueti.Oligochaete densities ranged from 401–2403 individuals/m2 in areas presumed to be nonpolluted, to 1–671 individual/m2 at sites with suspected toxicity. The highest density of oligochaetes (2835 individuals/m2) occurred at a site of organic enrichment.  相似文献

In this work, seedlings of two citrus rootstocks, the salt-tolerant Cleopatra mandarin (Citrus reshni Hort. ex Tan.) and the salt-sensitive Carrizo citrange (Citrus sinensis [L.] Osb. x Poncirus trifoliata [L.] Raf.) were used to study the relationship between chloride and water uptake. The results indicated that net chloride uptake rates in both genotypes were alike and decreased linearly with the time of salinity exposure, although they were more rapidly reduced in the tolerant genotype. In each rootstock, chloride uptake rates paralleled the decreases in transpiration rates. When transpiration was modified, concomitant changes in leaf Cl(-) concentrations were observed. There was a high positive correlation between total chloride content per plant and total water absorbed. In addition, the data indicate that the tolerant genotype "excluded" more chloride, i.e. it absorbed lower amounts of chloride per volume of water. Cleopatra also possessed a less efficient root system for water uptake and a higher shoot-to-root ratio. The results show that, overall, chloride absorption is linked to water use and that further tolerance in Cleopatra is mostly conferred by superior root resistance to Cl(-) uptake. Therefore, it is proposed that chloride absorption and, hence, salt tolerance in citrus depends to a great extent upon water use.  相似文献

In mammals, the central nervous system (CNS) is the most cholesterol rich organ by weight. Cholesterol metabolism is tightly regulated in the CNS and all cholesterol available is synthesized in situ. Deficits in cholesterol homeostasis at the level of synthesis, transport, or catabolism result in severe disorders featured by neurological disability. Recent studies indicate that a disturbed cholesterol metabolism is involved in CNS disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), multiple sclerosis (MS), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In contrast to circulating cholesterol, dietary plant sterols, can cross the blood–brain barrier and accumulate in the membranes of CNS cells. Plant sterols are well-known for their ability to lower circulating cholesterol levels. The finding that they gain access to the CNS has fueled research focusing on the physiological roles of plant sterols in the healthy and diseased CNS. To date, both beneficial and detrimental effects of plant sterols on CNS disorders are defined. In this review, we discuss recent findings regarding the impact of plant sterols on homeostatic and pathogenic processes in the CNS, and elaborate on the therapeutic potential of plant sterols in CNS disorders.  相似文献

Nitrogen fixation activity by soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) nodules has been shown to be especially sensitive to soil dehydration. Specifically, nitrogen fixation rates have been found to decrease in response to soil dehydration preceding alterations in plant gas exchange rates. The objective of this research was to investigate possible genetic variation in the sensitivity of soybean cultivars for nitrogen fixation rates in response to soil drying. Field tests showed substantial variation among cultivars with Jackson and CNS showing the least sensitivity in nitrogen accumulation to soil drying. Glasshouse experiments confirmed a large divergence among cultivars in the nitrogen fixation response to drought. Nitrogen fixation in Jackson was again found to be tolerant of soil drying, but the other five cultivars tested, including CNS, were found to be intolerant. Experiments with CNS which induced localized soil drying around the nodules did not result in decreases in nitrogen fixation rates, but rather nitrogen fixation responded to drying of the entire rooting volume. The osmotic potential of nodules was found to decrease markedly upon soil drying. However, the decrease in nodule osmotic potential occurred after significant decreases in nitrogen fixation rates had already been observed. Overall, the results of this study indicate that important genetic variations for sensitivity of nitrogen fixation to soil drying exist in soybean, and that the variation may be useful in physiology and breeding studies.  相似文献

Classic theories on the evolution of senescence make the simplifying assumption that all offspring are of equal quality, so that demographic senescence only manifests through declining rates of survival or fecundity. However, there is now evidence that, in addition to declining rates of survival and fecundity, many organisms are subject to age‐related declines in the quality of offspring produced (i.e. parental age effects). Recent modelling approaches allow for the incorporation of parental age effects into classic demographic analyses, assuming that such effects are limited to a single generation. Does this ‘single‐generation’ assumption hold? To find out, we conducted a laboratory study with the aquatic plant Lemna minor, a species for which parental age effects have been demonstrated previously. We compared the size and fitness of 423 laboratory‐cultured plants (asexually derived ramets) representing various birth orders, and ancestral ‘birth‐order genealogies’. We found that offspring size and fitness both declined with increasing ‘immediate’ birth order (i.e. birth order with respect to the immediate parent), but only offspring size was affected by ancestral birth order. Thus, the assumption that parental age effects on offspring fitness are limited to a single generation does in fact hold for L. minor. This result will guide theorists aiming to refine and generalize modelling approaches that incorporate parental age effects into evolutionary theory on senescence.  相似文献

Cadmium-binding protein synthesis and induction by cadmium chloride were studied in the human lymphoblastoid cell line WI-L2. Lymphoblasts were adapted to growth in 5 microM cadmium chloride (Cdr) and these cells were 2.5-fold more resistant to cadmium than the parental line. There was no difference in the cellular protein profile between the parental line and lymphoblasts grown for a short period, less than 10 days, in cadmium chloride as measured by [35S]cysteine labelling and SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. A basal level of cadmium binding protein was apparent, however, by gel filtration. The Cdr lymphoblasts were found to synthesize a substantial amount of cadmium-binding protein, approximately 25-fold more than the parental line. The cadmium-binding protein has the following properties which are consistent with its being a metallothionein: (1) [35S]Cysteine-labelled protein eluted at a Ve/Vo = 2.1 on a Sephadex G-75 column; (2) the molecular weight was estimated as 11 kDa on 7-17% SDS polyacrylamide gels; (3) the protein was heat-stable; (4) the unlabelled protein bound 109Cd2+.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to describe seed dispersal patterns of woolly monkeys (Lagothrix lagothricha) in terms of dispersal quantity and two factors related to dispersal quality: germination rates of dispersed seeds and the distance of dispersal to parental trees. The possible influence of retention time, travel distance, seed size, activity patterns, and fruit abundance on dispersal distance was also analyzed. Observations on activity, diet, daily movements, and seed dispersal were made on focal individuals of a group of woolly monkeys at a tropical rain forest in Tinigua National Park (Colombia). Sixty hours of focal samples per month were completed during 1 year. A total of 753 depositions were collected during the study. Each dropping contained seeds from an average of 2.68 different species (range 0 to 9). Collected depositions contained an underestimated total of 50,168 seeds (>1 mm). Given a population density of 30 individuals/km2, the woolly monkeys in the study area disperse more than 25,000 seeds/km2/day. These seeds belong to 112 different plant species. Germination rates of dispersed seeds are usually similar or higher than those of non-swallowed seeds. It was possible to determine dispersal distance in 264 cases when the focal animal was continuously followed from ingestion at the parental tree to deposition. Only 1% of these depositions landed in close proximity (<15 m) of the parental tree. It was very common that the droppings were deposited between 100 and 500 m from the parent tree, and up to 1.5 km. Higher retention times and longer travel distances were not correlated with increased dispersal distance. Two main reasons for this result were the prolonged and variable passage rates (avg=11.2 hr+/-6.5 SD.) and the circuitous routes of monkeys in this forest.  相似文献

In glasshouse experiments with plants in pots, applications of potassium chloride to the soil at 0.5 g/plant, 4 days before inoculation with Puccinia striiformis, decreased the severity of yellow rust on several winter wheat cultivars in comparison with untreated plants. Conversely, yellow rust was encouraged by applications of sodium nitrate. Sodium chloride in solution (8.6 g/l) reduced yellow rust when applied to the soil at the rate of 20 ml/plant but not when it was sprayed on to the leaves. In small-plot field experiments, sodium and potassium chlorides applied to the soil as dry powders in the spring at rates of 376, 1130 or 2260 kg/ha, significantly decreased the severity of yellow rust on most of the winter wheat cvs examined at each rate. The chlorides at these rates did not adversely affect the overall growth or yield in the absence of yellow rust.  相似文献

In the CNS, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) acts as an inhibitory transmitter via ligand-gated GABA(A) receptor channels and G protein-coupled GABA(B) receptors. Both of these receptor types mediate inhibitory postsynaptic transmission throughout the nervous system. For GABA(A) receptors, this inhibitory action is associated with a hyperpolarization due to an increase in conductance to chloride ions. Previous studies show that GABA(A) receptor activation in neonatal neurons and spinal cord neurons can be excitatory. Two papers recently appeared that clearly demonstrate that GABA can have a depolarizing and excitatory action in mature cortical neurons. Here we discuss the evolving story on chloride ion homeostasis in CNS neurons and its role in the bipolar life of the GABA(A) receptor.  相似文献

Understanding which reproductive barriers contribute to speciation is essential to understanding the diversity of life on earth. Several contemporary examples of strong hybrid seed inviability (HSI) between recently diverged species suggest that HSI may play a fundamental role in plant speciation. Yet, a broader synthesis of HSI is needed to clarify its role in diversification. Here, I review the incidence and evolution of HSI. Hybrid seed inviability is common and evolves rapidly, suggesting that it may play an important role early in speciation. The developmental mechanisms that underlie HSI involve similar developmental trajectories in endosperm, even between evolutionarily deeply diverged incidents of HSI. In hybrid endosperm, HSI is often accompanied by whole-scale gene misexpression, including misexpression of imprinted genes which have a key role in endosperm development. I explore how an evolutionary perspective can clarify the repeated and rapid evolution of HSI. In particular, I evaluate the evidence for conflict between maternal and paternal interests in resource allocation to offspring (i.e., parental conflict). I highlight that parental conflict theory generates explicit predictions regarding the expected hybrid phenotypes and genes responsible for HSI. While much phenotypic evidence supports a role of parental conflict in the evolution of HSI, an understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms of this barrier is essential to test parental conflict theory. Lastly, I explore what factors may influence the strength of parental conflict in natural plant populations as an explanation for why rates of HSI may differ between plant groups and the consequences of strong HSI in secondary contact.  相似文献

? Seed longevity, which is essential for germplasm conservation and survival of many land plant species, can vary considerably within species and cultivars. Here, we explore the relationship between parental and offspring phenotypes to elucidate how pre-zygotic environment affects seed longevity. ? Plants of the wild species Plantago cunninghamii were exposed to wet or dry soil within a warm or cool glasshouse until flowering and then moved to a common environment. Seeds subsequently produced were collected at maturity, and longevity was assessed by controlled ageing at 45°C, 60% relative humidity. Multivariate analysis was used to examine relationships between the parental and offspring phenotypes. ? The pre-zygotic environment resulted in a highly plastic parental response which was passed on to offspring seeds and changed their longevity (p(50)) by more than a factor of 2. Seed longevity is a function of the seed population's distribution of deaths in time (σ) and quality (K(i)); σ was associated with plant size, and K(i) with reproductive plant traits. ? The pre-zygotic growth environment modulated seed longevity via a parental effect. Reproductive performance and seed quality (K(i)) were highly correlated with each other and unrelated to the maternal plant phenotype. Hence seed quality may be associated with the paternal plant response to the environment.  相似文献

Apoptosis has been suggested as a mechanism by which dengue (DEN) virus infection may cause neuronal cell death (P. Desprès, M. Flamand, P.-E. Ceccaldi, and V. Deubel, J. Virol. 70:4090–4096, 1996). In this study, we investigated whether apoptotic cell death occurred in the central nervous system (CNS) of neonatal mice inoculated intracerebrally with DEN virus. We showed that serial passage of a wild-type human isolate of DEN virus in mouse brains selected highly neurovirulent variants which replicated more efficiently in the CNS. Infection of newborn mice with these neurovirulent variants produced fatal encephalitis within 10 days after inoculation. Virus-induced cell death and oligonucleosomal DNA fragmentation were observed in mouse brain tissue by day 9. Infected mouse brain tissue was assayed for apoptosis by in situ terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling and for virus replication by immunostaining of viral antigens and in situ hybridization. Apoptotic cell death and DEN virus replication were restricted to the neurons of the cortical and hippocampal regions. Thus, DEN virus-induced apoptosis in the CNS was a direct result of virus infection. In the murine neuronal cell line Neuro 2a, neuroadapted DEN virus variants showed infection patterns similar to those of the parental strain. However, DEN virus-induced apoptosis in these cells was more pronounced after infection with the neurovirulent variants than after infection with the parental strain.  相似文献
