Yellow-legged gulls Larus michahellis from the Atlantic Iberian coast exhibit some phenotypic similarities with the herring gull L. argentatus from Western Europe. To assess this phenomenon and its possible origin, we compared Mediterranean yellow-legged gulls, Atlantic Iberian yellow-legged gulls and herring gulls for several phenotypic traits (morphology, plumage), and used genetic data to determine the evolutionary history of the Atlantic Iberian yellow-legged gulls. Data from mitochondrial cytochrome b gene and microsatellite loci clearly indicate that Atlantic Iberian gulls are closely related to Mediterranean yellow-legged gulls, and do not show stronger signs of introgression with herring gulls relative to other populations of yellow-legged gulls. Atlantic Iberian yellow-legged gulls are more similar to herring gulls in body size and shape than to other yellow-legged gulls populations, but not in mantle colour and wing-tip pattern. Body size and other phenotypic and life history similarities with the herring gull ( L. argentatus argenteus ) such as voice, winter plumage and breeding phenology, previously described in several studies, might thus be interpreted as convergent characters. Within the yellow-legged gull, the high F st-values obtained from four nuclear microsatellite loci indicate substantial population structure and reduced levels of gene flow between gull populations in Mediterranean France and Atlantic Iberia. Differences among these populations in breeding phenology and migration patterns, likely resulting from different local selection pressures, might contribute to this low level of gene flow.  相似文献

The first goal of this study was to determine whether morphological variation in the freshwater blenny Salaria fluviatilis results in spatially structured populations distributed around Corsica, France, which would suggest genetically differentiated populations through reproductive isolation by distance. The second goal was to determine whether some morphological traits are related to water velocity, one of the most contrasting habitat characteristics in these rivers, which would suggest an adaptation to local conditions. The results showed that the morphology of S. fluviatilis differed among the three main geographic areas studied in Corsica and that geographically distant populations of S. fluviatilis were less similar morphologically and genetically than close ones. The results also indicated that the morphological differences among populations conformed to functional expectations. Overall, the results suggest that the morphological variation of S. fluviatilis from Corsican rivers is an adaptive response to water velocity and that these populations are in a process of reproductive isolation by distance.  相似文献

A feeding-trial was conducted to determine the effects of a deoxynivalenol (DON)-contaminated diet in growing pigs. DON was added as either the purified toxin or as naturally contaminated wheat. Growth performance, biochemical and hematological parameters and DON-transformation through intestinal bacteria were monitored throughout the study. Epithelial tissues along the gastro-intestinal tract were also examined for pathological changes and selected enzyme activities (oxoglutarat dehydrogenase, alanine-amino-transferase). There were no differences among the dietary treatments in all parameters measured except for feed intake and weight gain in the naturally contaminated diets fed ad libitum. Effectsin vivo could not be explained exclusively by cytotoxicity of DON foundin vitro. These observations may reflect the presence of other unidentified (toxic) compounds in the naturally contaminated grain or the influence of further factors. In future studies synergistic/additive interactions with substances promoting appetite should be taken into consideration.  相似文献

Current dynamic optimization models predict that animals shouldrespond to cache pilferage by decreasing the probability ofcaching food and by increasing internal fat storage to compensatefor a reduction in cache size. We tested these predictions underlaboratory conditions with variable food access (four 15-minintervals/day). Carolina chickadees (Poecile carolinensis) weresubjected to two environments: under pilferage conditions, one-quarterof their cached seeds were stolen every 0.5 h, and under no-pilferageconditions, seeds were left in place. Half the birds startedwith pilferage conditions and were then switched to the no-pilferagecondition; the other half started with no pilferage and werethen switched to pilferage conditions. The experiment was conductedover the course of a year to test for seasonal variation inthe response to seed pilferage. The birds responded to seedpilferage by taking more seeds from a feeder, suggesting thatthey monitored cache availability. Alternatively, the birdsmay have taken additional seeds from the feeder in responseto increased hunger caused by a loss of cached food. Contraryto our prediction, birds cached a higher percentage of seedsfrom the feeder when cached seeds were pilfered than when cacheswere left in place. Treatment order also affected caching behaviorfor all but the summer birds: chickadees initially subjectedto pilferage stored a higher proportion of seeds than thoseinitially subjected to no pilferage. Caching percentages inthe summer were unaffected by cache pilferage. Caching rates(number cached/day) also followed the same trends: rates werehigher when seeds were pilfered than when seeds were not pilfered,and there was a treatment-order effect for all but the summerbirds. Variation in body mass also failed to match predictedtrends. All birds exhibited a monotonic increase in mass asthe experiments proceeded, irrespective of treatment order.Controlling for this monotonic increase in mass, an analysisof residual variation in body mass indicated that birds gainedless weight when seeds were pilfered than when seeds were leftin place. Finally, birds tested in the fall and spring wereheavier than those tested in the summer. These results failto support the relationship between cache maintenance and bodymass regulation predicted by current models of energy regulation.We discuss the applicability of three hypotheses for the observedtrends.  相似文献

Optimizing the effect of management practices on weed population dynamics is challenging due to the difficulties in inferring demographic parameters in seed banks and their response to disturbance. Here, we used a long‐term plant survey between 2006 and 2012 in 46 French vineyards and quantified the effects of management practices (tillage, mowing, and herbicide) on colonization, germination, and seed survival of 30 weed species in relation to their seed mass. To do so, we used a recent statistical approach to reliably estimate demographic parameters for plant populations with a seed bank using time series of presence–absence data, which we extended to account for interspecies variation in the effects of management practices on demographic parameters. Our main finding was that when the level of disturbance increased (i.e., in plots with a higher number of herbicides, tillage, or mowing treatments), colonization success and survival in large‐seeded species increased faster than in small‐seeded species. High disturbance through tillage increased survival in the seed bank of species with high seed mass. The application of herbicides increased germination, survival, and colonization probabilities of species with high seed mass. Mowing, representing habitats more competitive for light, increased the survival of species with high seed mass. Overall, the strong relationships between the effects of management practices and seed mass provide an indicator for predicting the dynamics of weed communities under disturbance.  相似文献

Many but not all rainbow trout strains have morphologically distinguishable sex chromosomes. In these strains, the short arm of the X has multiple copies of 5S rDNA and a bright DAPI band near the centromere, both of which are missing from the Y chromosome, which has a very small short arm. We examined the presence of these markers using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in four different YY clonal lines derived from different strains and compared the results with sexed fish of the Donaldson strain with the normal X/Y heteromorphism. The Y chromosome in two of the YY clonal lines (Arlee and Swanson) is indistinguishable from the X chromosome and it is positive for 5S rDNA and the DAPI bright band. On the other hand, both 5S rDNA sequences and the DAPI band were not found on the Y chromosome in Hot Creek and Clearwater which have the normal Y. Thus the presence of these two cytogenetic markers may account for the size difference between the short arm of the X and Y chromosome found in most rainbow trout strains. In fishes the expression of one type of 5S rRNA is restricted to oocytes and previous work suggests that although XX males are fairly common, XY females are rare, implying a selective disadvantage for XY females. A hypothesis is presented to explain why this sex chromosome heteromorphism is not closely linked to the SEX locus, which is found on the long arm of the Y chromosome in rainbow trout.  相似文献

Between 85% and 95% of all living macroscopic species are found on land; the rest are mainly marine. We argue that the extraordinary diversity on land is geologically recent, dating from the mid-Cretaceous period, ~110 million years ago. We suggest that the ability and necessity to be rare--that is, to maintain populations at low density--are made possible by the low cost of mobility of consumers on land, and that rarity is critical to the attainment of high-terrestrial diversity. Increasing productivity beginning in the mid-Cretaceous led to an increase in the survival of populations at low density and to an increase in the intensity of selection for that ability as well as for high mobility and habitat specialization. The pre-eminence of terrestrial, as compared to marine, diversity is therefore an historical phenomenon that is best explained by selection-related changes in mobility, dispersibility, and the evolution of partnerships.  相似文献

Using a recombinant product from the structurally abnormal Y chromosome, Y*, female mice with a single X of either maternal or paternal origin were generated. The two types of females were produced on the same genetic background and differ only in the origin of the X chromosome. Hence it has been possible to assess the effect of parental origin of the X on survival of females with a single X chromosome. A highly significant prenatal loss of females with a single X of paternal origin, but no comparable loss of females with a single X of maternal origin was observed. The reduced viability of females with a paternally derived X could be mediated by the parental origin of the X (i.e. X chromosome imprinting) or alternatively, since the mothers of females with a single paternally derived X have only a single X chromosome, the effect could be mediated by the genotype of the mother (i.e. maternal uterine effect).  相似文献

Macrophages in the host's bloodstream and tissue serve as a first line of defence during infection with Plasmodium. While the killing effect of these cells on parasites has been investigated extensively, relatively little is known about the phagocytosis of infected red blood cells. In this article, Paolo Arese and Franca Turrini have joined Hagai Ginsburg to address the perplexing relationships between the macrophage and the malaria-infected red blood cell. They suggest that the same molecular mechanisms that normally operate to remove senescent or damaged red blood cells also operate during malaria, although the parasite may indirectly cause the destruction of macrophages.  相似文献

Two rounds of whole-genome duplications are thought to haveplayed an important role in the establishment of gene repertoiresin vertebrates. These events occurred during chordate evolutionafter the split of the urochordate and cephalochordate lineagesbut before the radiation of extant gnathostomes (jawed vertebrates).During this interval, diverse agnathans (jawless fishes), includingcyclostomes (hagfishes and lampreys), diverged. However, thereis no solid evidence for the timing of these genome duplicationsin relation to the divergence of cyclostomes from the gnathostomelineage. We conducted cDNA sequencing in diverse early vertebratesfor members of homeobox-containing (Dlx and ParaHox) and othergene families that would serve as landmarks for genome duplications.Including these new sequences, we performed a molecular phylogeneticcensus using the maximum likelihood method for 55 gene families.In most of these gene families, we detected many more gene duplicationsbefore the cyclostome–gnathostome split, than after. Manyof these gene families (e.g., visual opsins, RAR, Notch) havemultiple paralogs in conserved, syntenic genomic regions thatmust have been generated by large-scale duplication events.Taken together, this indicates that the genome duplicationsoccurred before the cyclostome–gnathostome split. We proposethat the redundancy in gene repertoires possessed by all vertebrates,including hagfishes and lampreys, was introduced primarily bygenome duplications. Apart from subsequent lineage-specificmodifications, these ancient genome duplication events mightserve generally to distinguish vertebrates from invertebratesat the genomic level.  相似文献

Conflicts over the delivery and sharing of food among family members are expected to lead to evolution of exaggerated offspring begging for food. Coevolution between offspring begging intensity and parent response depends on the genetic architecture of the traits involved. Given a genetic correlation between offspring begging intensity and parental response, there may be fast and arbitrary divergence in these behaviours between populations. However, there is limited knowledge about the genetic basis of offspring solicitation and parental response and whether these traits are genetically correlated. In this study, we performed a partial cross-fostering experiment of young between pied and collared flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca and Ficedula albicollis) and recorded the behaviour of individual offspring and their (foster)parents. We found that nestling collared flycatchers reached a higher phenotypic quality, estimated both as mass at fledging and as intensity of their T-lymphocyte-mediated immune response when raised by heterospecific foster parents. However, although collared flycatchers begged relatively more intensively, we found no evidence of corresponding higher resistance (i.e. lower feeding rate) of adult collared flycatchers than of adult pied flycatchers. Thus, the difference in offspring begging intensity between the two species seems not to be a result of a difference in escalation of the parent-offspring conflict. Instead, the species' divergence in exaggeration of offspring begging intensity 'honestly' matches a difference between the species in offspring need. This interpretation is strengthened by the fact that the difference in begging intensity between the two species increased as the season progressed, coinciding with the higher sensitivity of nestling collared flycatchers to the seasonal decline in food availability. Thus, the behavioural differentiation appears to be a direct consequence of a life-history differentiation (offspring growth patterns).  相似文献

Aim

To assess whether vegetation composition and soil chemistry explain the same or different parts of the variation in the soil microbial community (SMC).

Method

The above and below-ground communities and soil chemical properties were studied along a successional gradient from moorland to deciduous woodland. The SMC was assessed using PLFAs and M-TRFLPs. Using variance partitioning, Co-Correspondence Analysis (CoCA) and Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA), the variation (total inertia) in the SMC was partitioned into variation which was uniquely explained by either plant composition or soil chemistry, variation explained by both soil chemistry and plant composition, and unexplained variation.

Results

Plant community composition uniquely explained 30, 13, 16 and 20% of the inertia and soil chemistry uniquely explained 5, 18, 9 and 9% of the inertia in the archaeal TRFLPs, bacterial TRFLPs, fungal TRFLPs and all PLFAs, respectively.

Conclusion

For the first time, variance partitioning was used to include data from a CoCA; although the current limits of such an approach are shown, this study illustrates the potential of such analyses and shows that soil chemistry and plant composition are, in substantial amounts, explaining different parts of the variation within the SMC. This marks an important step in furthering our understanding of the relative importance of different drivers of change in the SMC.  相似文献

Introduction

The mechanisms by which development favors or constrains the evolution of new phenotypes are incompletely understood. Polyphenic species may benefit from developmental plasticity not only regarding ecological advantages, but also potential for evolutionary diversification. For instance, the repeated evolution of novel castes in ants may have been facilitated by the existence of alternative queen and worker castes and their respective developmental programs.

Material and Methods

Cataglyphis bombycina is exceptional in its genus because winged queens and size-polymorphic workers occur together with bigger individuals having saber-shaped mandibles. We measured seven body parts in more than 150 individuals to perform a morphometric analysis and assess the developmental origin of this novel phenotype.

Results

Adults with saber-shaped mandibles differ from both workers and queens regarding the size of most body parts. Their relative growth rates are identical to workers for some pairs of body parts, and identical to queens for other pairs of body parts; critical sizes differ in all cases.

Conclusions

Big individuals are a third caste, i.e. soldiers, not major workers. Novel traits such as elongated mandibles are combined with a mix of queen and worker growth rates. We also reveal the existence of a dimorphism in the queen caste (microgynes and macrogynes). We discuss how novel phenotypes can evolve more readily in the context of an existing polyphenism. Both morphological traits and growth rules from existing queen and worker castes can be recombined, hence mosaic phenotypes are more likely to be viable. In C. bombycina, such a mosaic phenotype appears to function both for defense (saber-shaped mandibles) and fat storage (big abdomen). Recycling of developmental programs may have contributed to the morphological diversity and ecological success of ants.  相似文献

The many documented examples of parallel and convergent evolution in similar environments are strong evidence for the role of natural selection in the evolution of trait variation. However, species may respond to selection in different ways; idiosyncrasies of their evolutionary history may affect how different species respond to the same selective pressure. To determine whether evolutionary history affects trait-environment associations in a recently diverged lineage, we investigated within-species trait-environment associations in the white proteas, a closely related monophyletic group. We first used manovas to determine the relative importance of shared response to selection, evolutionary history and unique responses to selection on trait variation. We found that on average, similar associations to the environment across species explained trait variation, but that the species had different mean trait values. We also detected species-specific associations of traits with the environmental gradients. To identify the traits associated uniquely with the environment, we used a structural equation model. Our analysis showed that the species differed in how their traits were associated with each of the environmental variables. Further, in the cases of two root traits (root mass and root length/mass ratio), two species differed in the direction of their associations (e.g. populations in one species had heavier roots in warmer areas, and populations in the other species had lighter roots in warmer areas). Our study shows that even in a closely related group of species, evolutionary history may have an effect on both the size and direction of adaptations to the environment.  相似文献

Sex ratio theory has been very successful in predicting under which circumstances parents should bias their investment towards a particular offspring sex. However, most examples of adaptive sex ratio bias come from species with well-defined mating systems and sex determining mechanisms, while in many other groups there is still an on-going debate about the adaptive nature of sex allocation. Here we study the sex allocation in the mealybug Planococcus citri, a species in which it is currently unclear how females adjust their sex ratio, even though experiments have shown support for facultative sex ratio adjustment. Previous work has shown that the sex ratio females produce changes over the oviposition period, with males being overproduced early and late in the laying sequence. Here we investigate this complex pattern further, examining both the robustness of the pattern and possible explanations for it. We first show that this sex allocation behaviour is indeed consistent across lines from three geographical regions. Second, we test whether females produce sons first in order to synchronize reproductive maturation of her offspring, although our data provide little evidence for this adaptive explanation. Finally we test the age at which females are able to mate successfully and show that females are able to mate and store sperm before adult eclosion. Whilst early-male production may still function in promoting protandry in mealybugs, we discuss whether mechanistic constraints limit how female allocate sex across their lifetime.  相似文献

DNA methylation has been studied with regard to chemotherapeutics for a number of years. The radiation field has just begun to look at this in the context of radiotherapy or radiation exposure. So far, the data suggest that radiation induces epigenetic reprogramming which indicates a purposeful response that influences the cell fate or alters the response to future exposure. Further studies may result in discovery of biomarkers for radiotherapy outcome or prediction of the degree of radiation resistance. Past and ongoing development of DNMT1 inhibitors that lead to DNA hypomethylation appear to sensitize many tumor types to radiation and may be an area with long term clinical implications. J. Cell. The actin network has been implicated in the intracellular transport and positioning of the melanosomes, organelles that are specialized in the biosynthesis and the storage of melanin. It contributes also to molecular mechanisms that underlie the intracellular membrane dynamics and thereby can control the biogenesis of melanosomes. Two mechanisms for actin‐based movements have been identified: one is dependent on the motors associated to actin namely the myosins; the other is dependent on actin polymerization. This review will focus on to the role of the actin cytoskeleton and myosins in the transport and in the biogenesis of melanosomes. Myosins involved in membrane traffic are largely seen as transporters of organelles or membrane vesicles containing cargos along the actin networks. Yet increasing evidence suggests that some of the myosins contribute to the dynamics of internal membrane by using other mechanisms. The role of the myosins and the different molecular mechanisms by which they contribute or may contribute to the distribution, the movement and the biogenesis of the melanosomes in epidermal melanocytes and retinal pigmented epithelial (RPE) cells will be discussed.  相似文献

In non-nodulated soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill cv. Ransom]plants that were subjected to 15 d of nitrogen deprivation inflowing hydroponic culture, concentrations of nitrogen declinedto 1.0 and 1.4mmol Ng–1 dry weight in shoots and roots,respectively, and the concentration of soluble amino acids (determinedas primary amines) declined to 40µmol g–1 dry weightin both shoots and roots. In one experiment, nitrogen was resuppliedfor 10 d to one set of nitrogen-depleted plants as 1.0 mol m–3NH4+ to the whole root system, to a second set as 0.5 mol m–3NH4+ plus 0.5 mol m–3 NO3 to the whole root system,and to a third set as 1.0 mol m–3 NH4+ to one-half ofa split-root system and 1.0 mol m–3 NO3 to theother half. In a second experiment, 1.0 mol m–3 of nitrogenwas resupplied for 4 d to whole root systems in NH4+ : NO3ratios of 1:0, 9:1, and 1:1. Nutrient solutions were maintainedat pH 6.0. When NH4+ was resupplied in combination with NO3 to thewhole root system in Experiment I, cumulative uptake of NH4+for the 10 d of resupply was about twice as great as when NH4+was resupplied alone. Also, about twice as much NH4+ as NO3was taken up when both ions were resupplied to the whole rootsystem. When NH4+ and NO3 were resupplied to separatehalves of a split-root system, however, cumulative uptake ofNH4+ was about half that of NO3. The uptake of NH4+,which is inhibited in nitrogen-depleted plants, thus is facilitatedby the presence of exogenous NO3, and the stimulatingeffect of NO3 on uptake of NH4+ appears to be confinedto processes within root tissues. In Experiment II, resupplyof nitrogen as both NH4+ and NO3 in a ratio of either1:1 or 9:1 enhanced the uptake of NH4+. The enhancement of NH4+uptake was 1.8-fold greater when the NH4+: NO3-resupplyratio was 1:1 than when it was 9:1; however, only 1.3 timesas much NO3 was taken up by plants resupplied with the1 :1 exogenous ratio. The effect of NO3 on enhancementof uptake of NH4+ apparently involves more than net uptake ofNO3 itself and perhaps entails an effect of NO3uptake on maintenance of K+ availability within the plant. Theconcentration of K+ in plants declined slightly during nitrogendeprivation and continued to decline following resupply of nitrogen.The greatest decline in K+ concentration occurred when nitrogenwas resupplied as NH4+ alone. It is proposed that decreasedavailability of K+ within the NH4+-resup-plied plants inhibitedNH4+ uptake through restricted transfer of amino acids fromthe root symplasm into the xylem. Groups of linyphiid spiders (Erigone spp.) (Araneae, Linyphiidae), collected at intervals from arable land, were tested in laboratory bioassays to determine the proportion of individuals that exhibited ballooning behaviour on each field sampling occasion. There was no significant variation in the proportions of spiders in each test group ballooning in the laboratory over a year. Investigations of ground density and aerial dispersal, in a grass field and a winter-wheat field, confirmed that peaks in numbers of spiders observed ballooning in the field generally coincided with population peaks in the summer and autumn. Significant correlations between ground populations and aerial catches were found for total spiders, immature spiders, and Bathyphantes gracilis (Blackwall) in both fields, adult spiders in the grass field, Erigone spp. in the grass, and Meioneta rurestris (C.L. Koch) in the wheat. The other groups analysed, Lepthyphantes tenuis (Blackwall) in both fields, Erigone spp. in wheat, and M. rurestris in grass, showed similar but non-significant trends. No significant difference was found between overall ground-to-air ratios for males compared to females, but adult spiders were more likely to balloon than immatures.  相似文献
