Availability of shelter is an important component of habitat selection for animals as it can influence survival (protection against harsh physical conditions and predation) and growth (energy acquisition and expenditure). Few studies address the effect of shelter on metabolic expenditures associated with non-mechanical tasks (excluding station holding or movement). The main goal of this study was to investigate the influence of shelter use on metabolic traits of smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) from two populations (Kiamika River and Lake Long). Respirometry experiments on smallmouth bass were conducted to measure standard metabolic rate (SMR), resting metabolic rate (RMR), aerobic scope (AS), recovery time (RT) and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) in the presence or absence of shelter. The presence of shelter did not affect most metabolic traits, except for RMR, which was reduced in the presence of shelter for Lake Long fish. The results of this study also show that larger fish had lower SMR in the presence of shelter than when it was absent. When accounting for social hierarchy, there were no differences in most metabolic traits in dominant or subordinate fish in the presence or absence of shelter, except for RT, which was significantly lower in the presence of shelter for dominant fish. These results do not support the existence of an unequivocal relationship between individual metabolic traits and the presence of shelter. If physiological motives may influence the use of shelter, sheltering in itself might not have important consequences on energy expenditures required for non-mechanical tasks.  相似文献

1. The alteration of stream habitats by urbanisation reduces the availability of shelter. Reduced shelter availability may increase both predation risks and metabolic costs, negatively affecting the growth performance of stream fish. Although urbanised streams often allow the establishment of invasive species, the additive or interactive effects of shelter availability and invasive species are rarely explored. The invasive red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) is a strong shelter competitor and predator in streams. 2. We conducted a stream‐channel experiment to investigate how shelter availability and this invasive crayfish species affect the growth performance (measured as the loss in body mass under starved conditions) of two native benthic species, Japanese crucian carp (Carassius auratus complex) and an endangered cobitid fish (Lefua echigonia). 3. We found that both the absence of shelter and the presence of crayfish increased body mass loss in the crucian carp. However, the growth performance of the crucian carp was improved by the presence of shelter except in the presence of crayfish, in which case the shelter available did not ameliorate the negative effect of the crayfish on growth performance (i.e. an interactive effect). This result suggests that crayfish may affect the growth performance of the crucian carp through chemical cues as well as through shelter occupancy. 4. In contrast, shelter availability is the primary factor affecting the body mass loss of the cobitid fish. However, the growth performance of these fish was unaffected by the presence of crayfish. The change in the growth performance of the cobitid fish in response to the absence of shelter was greater than that of the crucian carp. This finding suggests that the cobitid fish may be more vulnerable than the crucian carp to a reduction in shelter availability. 5. Our study demonstrates that reduced shelter availability and/or crayfish invasion can have significant, indirect negative effects on the growth performance of native fish, but whether those effects are interactive might vary depending on the species. Our findings have clear implications for stream restoration and habitat assessment.  相似文献

The present study investigated the diel distribution of Strongylocentrotus intermedius in different laboratory food availability and shelter conditions. The diel rhythm of sheltering behaviour was similar between sea urchins in groups 1 (food inside shelter) and 3 (no food available), but significantly different to group 2 (food outside shelter). Among the three treatments, we found significantly more urchins outside shelter in group 2 than in groups 1 and 3 (p?<?0.05), while no significant difference was found between sea urchins in groups 1 and 3 (p?>?0.05). Kruskal–Wallis test confirmed this conclusion. When food was inside shelter, we found significantly more sea urchins staying on food than at other places inside the shelter (p?<?0.001). When food was outside shelter, significantly more individuals chose to stay in shelter rather than on food outside shelter (p?=?0.001). The present study provides new insights into the trade-off of sea urchins between foraging and sheltering behaviours.  相似文献

利用Biolog法、熏蒸提取和比色滴定的方法,测定了土壤碳源代谢强度、生物量和酶活性,分析了塔里木沙漠公路防护林土壤微生物活性的分异特征.结果表明: 随着防护林定植年限增加,土壤微生物代谢活性(AWCD)和多样性指数明显增加,但不同土层间无明显差异;不同年限林地间过氧化氢酶差异极显著,纤维素酶和蔗糖酶差异显著;随着防护林定植年限增加,土壤微生物生物量增大,不同年限林地间微生物生物量碳和氮的差异极显著和显著,而微生物生物量磷无显著差异;土壤微生物的AWCD值与速效养分显著正相关,但与容重和水分的相关性不大.在现有的管理制度和气候条件下,随定植年限增加,塔里木沙漠公路防护林土壤代谢活性逐渐提高.  相似文献

1. In many freshwater systems, competition for shelter plays an important role in determining the persistence of both native and alien species. The red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, is currently invading the native habitat of the signal crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus, in southern Oregon, and interspecific competition for shelter may be driving the species replacement in this region. 2. We designed a 2 × 3 factorial mesocosm experiment, with shelter density and species combination as factors, to investigate shelter occupancy and resource competition. Contrary to our predictions, the two crayfish species are equal competitors for shelter. Further, the invasive P. clarkii modified its shelter occupancy behaviour in the presence of the native P. leniusculus and has broader microhabitat preferences. 3. Specifically, we found that P. clarkii alters shelter occupancy and space use patterns when the two species occurred together, such that shelter use was identical between P. clarkii and P. leniusculus in mixed‐species treatments. In such treatments, both species increased their use of shelters when shelter density increased. When P. clarkii was alone, however, individuals did not alter shelter use as a function of shelter density, whereas P. leniusculus exhibited similar density‐dependent behaviour in both mixed‐ and single‐species treatments. 4. In a complementary field survey, we employed an ‘epicentre‐based’ design to sample two field sites. We observed patterns of microhabitat use and breadth for each species similar to those in our mesocosm experiment: the invasive P. clarkii was more abundant across different habitats and used a broader range of microhabitats than the native P. leniusculus. As such, we found that P. clarkii was more abundant across both field sites than the P. leniusculus, occupying microhabitats within and beyond the preferred range of P. leniusculus. Both field sites were affected by urban development and agriculture. 5. The use of microhabitats by both species was similar in the laboratory and the field. This study confirms that P. clarkii individuals can, and do, successfully occupy microhabitats preferred by P. leniusculus in the Willamette Valley. The results from our study may be relevant to other freshwater systems inhabited by P. clarkii and contribute to the understanding of ‘niche opportunity’, a concept which defines the environmental conditions that promote biological invasions.  相似文献

Triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) are nocturnal blood‐sucking insects. During daylight hours they remain in an akinetic state inside their shelters, whereas at dusk they become active and move outside. When they are outside their shelters during the photophase, triatomines are vulnerable to diurnal predators and the period just before dawn is critical to their survival. This work analyses the existence of competitive interactions involved in the occupancy of shelters by triatomines. Behavioural assays were performed in which nymphs of different stages, nutritional status or species were released in an experimental arena containing a space‐limited artificial shelter. The proportions of individuals occupying the shelter during the photophase were quantified to estimate the competitive abilities of each stage and species. Intraspecific comparisons showed higher levels of shelter occupancy for fourth over fifth instars and fed over unfed nymphs of Triatoma infestans. Interspecific comparisons showed higher rates of shelter occupancy for Triatoma sordida in comparison with T. infestans, and for T. infestans over Rhodnius prolixus. Arrival order was also relevant to determining shelter occupancy levels: early arrival was advantageous in comparison with later arrival. The study of intra‐ and interspecific competitive interactions for shelter occupancy provides relevant information about colonization and recolonization processes in the natural environments of triatomines.  相似文献

In eastern Hokkaidô, Japan, the native crayfish Cambaroides japonicus de Haan has been declining rapidly while the exotic crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus Dana has been expanding its range. We speculated that the observed displacement of Cambaroides by Pacifastacus is partly due to an interference interaction for shelter between the two species. We studied the impacts of Pacifastacus on Cambaroides by testing experimentally whether intensity of interference, the outcome of dominance order and shelter occupancy differed between single- and mixed-species combinations of the two species. Pacifastacus showed less defensive behaviours towards Cambaroides than to conspecifics. In contrast, Cambaroides exhibited more defensive behaviours towards Pacifastacus than to conspecifics. Pairwise comparison of agonistic behaviours in mixed species groups revealed that Pacifastacus exhibiting frequently more aggressive attacks while Camaboides showing more defensive behaviours to their respective counterparts. Dominance in aggressive encounter generally dictated shelter occupancy in mixed-species and Pacifastacus pairs but not in Cambaroides pairs. Because shelter utilization, when these are not limited in supply, was much more frequent in Cambaroides than Pacifastacus, Cambaroides suffered interference from both conspecifics and heterospecifics when they competed for a single shelter. Pacifastacus, however, did not show any change in shelter occupancy in the presence or absence of conspecics or heterospecifics. Inferiority in aggressive interactions and shelter occupancy can therefore be a critical disadvantage for Cambaroides if shelters are limited in natural situations.  相似文献

We compared preferences shown by zebrafish Danio rerio and three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus for shelter provided by above-tank shade and artificial plants. Zebrafish showed no preference for either shelter, whereas sticklebacks showed a preference for both shelter types over open areas and for shade over plants. Our results suggest shade may be used as enrichment for captive fish and re-emphasise the importance of species-specific welfare considerations.  相似文献

The generality of mechanisms affecting habitat choice and grazing in seagrass meadows was evaluated in a latitudinal comparison of seagrass grazers from the temperate (60°N) Baltic Sea and the subtropical (30°N) Gulf of Mexico. Using similar habitat choice experiment set-ups in Finland and the USA, the role of food type, habitat complexity and predation hazard on habitat choice of the isopods Idotea baltica (Pallas) and Erichsonella attenuata Harger were tested. When shelter was provided by both living and artificial seagrass, epiphytic food resources on artificial vegetation were clearly preferred by both species, although Idotea was attracted to epiphyte-free seagrass when no alternative food was present. When choosing between food and shelter, both species preferred epiphytic food over shelter. However, under predation hazard of fish, Erichsonella clearly switched to the habitat offering shelter, while the presence of a predatory fish produced no preference for shelter by Idotea. Food type may be considered as an universal mechanism that partly determines the presence of grazers in seagrass habitats and is, in the absence of a predator, more important than shelter. Predation risk affected the behaviour of the grazers, but the response varied between species possibly due to varying importance of fish predation in the areas studied. Daily activity of slugs, Deroceras reticulatum and Arion distinctus, was studied in the laboratory in relation to the presence of shelters so as to define optimal conditions for using traps to forecast crop damage. Under constant temperature and humidity, activity of slugs began with the lights off. Its arrest occurred after a period of activity with the lights on. Slugs rested most frequently under a shelter on bare earth and rarely used the same shelter for more than two consecutive days. When food was placed under the shelter, the number of slugs found under the shelter was more constant throughout the 24 h period, but lower during diurnal rest. The presence of 4% methiocarb pellets under the shelter led to an increased occupation by slugs, due to the poisoning of some of them. Acts of aggression were more numerous in A. distinctus than in D. reticulatum. In D. reticulatum the smallest slug was the least aggressive and suffered more attacks from the other slugs. In A. distinctus the numbers of attacks suffered or provoked varied little with the size of the slug, but the smallest slug showed less interactions with other slugs.  相似文献

We studied the species composition and life history patterns of shelter‐building microlepidoptera on the willow Salix miyabeana in Hokkaido, northern Japan. We identified 23 microlepidopteran species across seven families that constructed leaf shelters. Species in Tortricidae and Pyralidae comprised approximately 90% of the total number of sampled shelter‐building microlepidoptera that reached adult eclosion in the laboratory. Seasonal changes in the density of leaf shelters showed two peaks: early June and mid‐August. In June, caterpillars of Gypsonoma bifasciata, Gypsonoma ephoropa, Acleris issikii and Saliciphage acharis were the principal shelter builders, while in August shelters were constructed primarily by caterpillars of Nephopterix adelphella, A. issikii and S. acharis. Approximately 90% of leaf shelters were constructed on the top portions of shoots, suggesting that most shelter‐building caterpillars prefer to build leaf shelters here.  相似文献

Synopsis Observations were made on intra- and interspecific aggressive interactions among the fishes living in the rubble/sand coral reef habitat in St. Croix, U. S. Virgin Islands. Four species (beaugregory — Stegastes leucostictus; ocean surgeonfish — Acanthurus bahianus; doctor fish — A. chirurgus; common squirrelfish — Holocentrus rufus) which sheltered in holes on the reef all actively defended one to several shelter sites at dusk. Short-term shelter side fidelity was observed in three of these four species. Agonistic interactions over both food and shelter occurred during the daytime but much less frequently than agonistic interactions over shelter at dusk. Dominance in intraspecific aggression was determined almost completely by the relative sizes of the individuals involved, with the larger individuals dominating in 95–98% of all encounters. A similar, but less strong, relationship between size and dominance existed for interactions between closely related species. For aggressive encounters between unrelated species, however, both relative sizes and species identity determined the outcome. Species, both diurnal and nocturnal, which strongly defend several shelter sites may have a strong and disproportionate impact on the sheltering behavior of other fishes. Intraspecific and interspecific defense of shelter sites may determine the patterns of mortality that result from predation, thereby influencing population abundances and assemblage composition.  相似文献

In birds, the characteristics of the nest site may affect reproductive success. We found that shelter is an important characteristic of the Antarctic petrel (Thalassoica antarctica) nests because shelter prevents chick predation. However, the benefit of shelter was countervailed by melt water which mainly entered well-sheltered nests. Chick survival was monitored until the chick was left unattended for the first time. Late-hatched chicks had a higher survival probability than early-hatched chicks, possibly because late hatchers swamp the predator, the south polar skua (Catharacta maccormicki). Poorly sheltered nests tended to be occupied by parents with low body mass and late-hatched eggs. The results suggest that both shelter per se and parental characteristics may explain the relationship between predation risk and shelter. We need experiments to study the influence of nest site on reproductive success, and we need to map the frequency of melt water as a cause of reproductive failure.  相似文献

Summary Larvae of the pyralid moth, Herpetogramma aeglealis, construct feeding shelters upon the Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides). Field and laboratory study involving 532 shelters showed that as the larvae mature, they sequentially inhabit approximately 5 shelters of 3 distinct types, constructed at night on different fronds of the same plant. The bundle shelter, simple and ephemeral, is first to be inhabited and constructed. The fiddlehead shelter which houses slightly older larvae strongly resembles contemporaneously emerging frond fiddleheads. The final shelter form, the globe, is a silk-bound ball of leaflets at the frond tip. An individual larva usually constructs 3 globe shelters on different fronds of the same plant before completing its development. As shelter sites, sterile Polystichum fronds are chosen preferentially over fertile fronds. The bundle and fiddlehead shelter forms, less abundant, appear cryptic to humans and perhaps to other vertebrates. The final globe shelter form is larger and quite conspicuous. However, the persistence of empty globe shelters left on the plant as the larva moves to a new one may serve to make searching for larvae less profitable for potential predators and parasites. We suggest that the energetic costs of constructing and occupying multiple shelters may be offset by circumvention of reduced frond palatability and reduced exposure to predators and parasites.  相似文献

Macrobrachium malcolmsonii, M. nobilii, and M. lamarrei were used to investigate their preferences among three substrate colors (dark brown, black, and light brown), shelter type (black tile and black PVC pipe), color (black and brown tile), and diameter, and regarding intra- and inter-species habitation. Both M. lamarrei and M. malcolmsonii preferred dark-brown substrate, while M. nobilii preferred black. The choice of shelter type was monitored by time spent by each species in a black PVC tube or in a black tile. Within a 24-h period, M. malcolmsonii spent a greater amount of time (60.5%) within the black tile, while M. nobilii spent more time (71%) inside the black PVC tube. M. lamarrei always occupied an open area and thus was discarded from further experiments. If we consider daytime and nighttime separately, both species spent more time within the black tile during the day than during the night. Choice of shelter color was tested with black and brown shelters of identical size; both species exclusively preferred the black. Between the species, despite the smaller body size both male and female M. nobilii succeeded in evicting M. malcolmsonii, suggesting a stronger shelter affinity. When competing for shelter within the same species, a male was more dominant than a conspecific female and juvenile. Similarly males of both species allowed conspecific juveniles to cohabit for about 16% of the time. Male M. malcolmsonii also allowed cohabitation of a female for 31.2% of the time, unlike the male M. nobilii, which did not allow female cohabitation at all. Both species preferred shelters that were adjusted to their meral spread as opposed to their carapace width. The possibility of taking meral spread as a taxonomic character was also indicated. The study also found a linear relationship between exuvium weight and shelter affinity among the three species. A lower ratio indicated a higher shelter affinity. The exuvium/total body weight ratio confirmed the shelter affinity, which was ranked as M. nobilii (0.275) < M. malcolmsonii (0.312) < M. lamarrei (0.426).  相似文献

Shelter acquisition seems to be one of the main causes for agonistic interactions in the communal culturing of decapod crustaceans, leading to reduction in survival and growth-rate values. Understanding how to reduce aggressive behaviour among individuals by providing suitable shelters would promote production efficiency and welfare in such aquaculture environments. Factors influencing the sheltering behaviour of a freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium nobilii, were studied in laboratory conditions. Prior ownership significantly increased the ability to retain a shelter; males were significantly more likely to acquire and retain a shelter than females, except females carrying eggs. Various movements of the prawn while acquiring the shelter and the behaviour pattern involved in evicting an occupant are described. The size of the shelter selected by an animal is directly related to its body size. Regarding the choice of the colour of the shelter, juveniles and adults preferred dark shelters over light-coloured shelters and never chose a transparent shelter. Communicated by R.F. This study investigated whether shelter (presence or absence) affected the frequency of fin damage in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar exposed to feed restrictions (0·73 or 0·33% of body mass day?1). The presence of shelter had a positive effect on the pectoral fins at both feed ration levels and on the dorsal fin at the higher ration level but it had a negative effect on survival. The reduced feed rations resulted in fish of the same size and nutritional status as wild fish. The provision of shelter has potential to mitigate the negative effects of feed restrictions on fin quality, but the optimal shelter design requires some additional investigation.  相似文献

Recognizing and avoiding aversive situations are central aspects of mammalian cognition. These abilities are essential for health and survival and are expected to have a prominent genetic basis. We modeled these abilities in eight common mouse inbred strains covering ~75% of the species' natural variation and in gene‐trap mice (>2000 mice), using an unsupervised, automated assay with an instrumented home cage (PhenoTyper) containing a shelter with two entrances. Mice visited this shelter for 20–1200 times/24 h and 71% of all mice developed a significant and often strong preference for one entrance. Subsequently, a mild aversive stimulus (shelter illumination) was automatically delivered when mice used their preferred entrance. Different genotypes developed different coping strategies. Firstly, the number of entries via the preferred entrance decreased in DBA/2J, C57BL/6J and 129S1/SvImJ, indicating that these genotypes associated one specific entrance with the aversive stimulus. Secondly, mice started sleeping outside (C57BL/6J, DBA/2J), indicating they associated the shelter, in general, with the aversive stimulus. Some mice showed no evidence for an association between the entrance and the aversive light, but did show markedly shorter shelter residence times in response to illumination, indicating they did perceive illumination as aversive. Finally, using this assay, we screened 43 different mutants, which yielded a novel gene, specc1/cytospinB. This mutant showed profound and specific delay in avoidance learning. Together, these data suggest that different genotypes express distinct learning and/or memory of associations between shelter entrance and aversive stimuli, and that specc1/cytospinB is involved in this aspect of cognition.  相似文献

The shelter defense dynamics of reproductively active (Form I) male red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Girard) were investigated by staging serial intrusions by male, maternal or non-maternal female conspecifics after one day of residence. The male residents showed a direct contest advantage only against non-maternal females, and won a significantly higher proportion of the encounters against non-maternal females than against either male or maternal female intruders. However, there was no significant difference in success against male or maternal female intruders. Further experiments against male intruders showed that increasing male prior residence to either 2 or 4 days did not significantly improve the residents’ proportion of successful encounters. A final experiment revealed extremely low shelter fidelity in male P. clarkii, the most likely reason why male shelter defense against conspecific males and maternal females is not successful. These results, combined with those of past research, suggest that non-maternal females, juveniles and recently molted conspecifics are most vulnerable to predation and cannibalism, since males and maternal females easily out-compete non-maternal females for shelter, and adults out-compete juveniles. These findings may have implications for P. clarkii aquaculture and general management.  相似文献
