Cognitive neuroscience is making rapid strides in areas highly relevant to education. However, there is a gulf between current science and direct classroom applications. Most scientists would argue that filling the gulf is premature. Nevertheless, at present, teachers are at the receiving end of numerous 'brain-based learning' packages. Some of these contain alarming amounts of misinformation, yet such packages are being used in many schools. What, if anything, can neuroscientists do to help good neuroscience into education?  相似文献

MOL3D is a generalized machine-independent computer program that lets the user interactively build 3D structures with different display options, such as wire, ball-and-stick and CPK representations. The program, which uses its own graphics package and driver, is designed to be very user friendly through the use of commands and menus. It has powerful transformation capabilities, such as software rotations, superpositions and zooming, and it is equipped with a fragment database that allows the user to build complex structures. The algorithm presented here is designed to perform computations in all the conformational space and therefore can be used to predict experimentally available quantities, such as NMR coupling constants. The program is efficient in the sense that it handles only dihedral angles in the first steps; as a result, it allows a rapid sampling of a great number of points through the entire conformational space. The user can choose between grid and Monte-Carlo searches of energy minimization, using a reasonable amount of computer time.  相似文献

The pH-sensitive swelling of a natural-polyelectrolyte complex gel, prepared from xanthan and chitosan, was investigated using a model based on the Donnan equilibrium theory with special attention to the dissociation behavior of the polyelectrolytes. First, the pH dependence of the degree of ionization for the xanthan-chitosan complex was evaluated by the potentiometric titration method, and the value of the dissociation constant for analyzing the swelling behavior was obtained. Second, the validity of the Donnan equilibrium was confirmed by measuring the concentration of sodium ion in the gels. By analyzing the swelling behavior of the gel using the model, it was suggested that the network properties of the gel altered with changes in the ambient pH. These results indicate that analysis using the parameters evaluated by potentiometric titration is useful for investigating the swelling behavior of ionic gels.  相似文献

Science–policy-interfaces (SPIs) are expected to go beyond the linear model of scientific policy advice through creating spaces for exchange and dialogue between ‘policy’ and ‘knowledge’. Given that most environmental issues require inter- and transdisciplinary approaches, SPIs must take into account a variety of knowledge types, views and interests of scientists, policymakers and other decision makers. Moreover, acceptance and durability of SPIs depend largely on their perceived legitimacy and the credibility of their knowledge-gathering processes, providing additional challenges for their internal organisation. As the interplay between different knowledge types and decision making is far from neutral, a reflexive approach is required in the design of an SPI so that it is capable of learning from past experiences. The aim of this article is to discuss which governance arrangements could best support the development of an effective and legitimate SPI for European biodiversity politics. We analyse different options for facilitating the implementation of a ‘Network of Knowledge’ approach. This approach has been developed to improve the interface between diverse knowledge-holder communities and decision making processes for biodiversity and ecosystem services—a field where multi-scalar and multi-dimensional problems arise. In this article, we develop and discuss two stylized extreme governance models as our starting point: an `informal network model´, which almost entirely depends on the dedication of individuals, versus a more formalized `platform model´, predominantly based on the needs and interests of the organisations involved. We discuss the pros and cons of each of these models in reaching their objectives and in developing sound governing processes for a ‘Network of Knowledge’. From this discussion, we derive a recommended design for the reflexive governance of such a network in the context of the European Union and finish by discussing some more general lessons learnt.  相似文献

Several lines of evidence from experimental animal models of infection have clearly demonstrated the feasibility of a prophylactic and therapeutic vaccine against Helicobacter pylori. However, comparatively few clinical studies have been carried out to evaluate whether the positive results obtained in animals can be reproduced in humans. The preliminary results obtained with single component, mucosally delivered vaccines have shown very limited results thus far. Very good immunogenicity and safety profiles are now being obtained with parenterally delivered, aluminium hydroxide-adjuvanted multicomponent candidate vaccines. For sure, better vaccine formulations, better antigen preparation(s), better adjuvants, and better delivery systems have to be designed and tested for safety and immunogenicity. These studies are also needed for deciphering those aspects of the effector immune responses that correlate with protection against H. pylori infection and disease.  相似文献

The new release of MOL3D, a molecular modeling program written in FORTRAN, contains not only enhanced graphic capabilities, but also an improved module for intermolecular calculations that allows rigid and flexible docking. Various interfaces have been added to some well-known and widely diffused programs, such as MM2, AMBER and MOPAC, and to the Cambridge Crystallographic Database. Finally a graph manager and a samples database have been added, which allow efficient searches with various requirements concerning structural templates, pharmacophoric three-dimensional (3D) constraints, and the field of biological activity, if any.  相似文献

Immunostimulatory glucose polymers known as β-glucans have been studied for many years. Our laboratory has prepared and characterized a novel microparticulate β-glucan (MG) from the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Because MG particles are rapidly phagocytized by murine peritoneal macrophages and induce the expression of B7 costimulatory molecules, we hypothesized that MG could serve as a vaccine adjuvant to enhance specific immune responses. Here, we describe a procedure for conjugating the test vaccine antigen bovine serum albumin (BSA) to MG via water-soluble carbodiimide linkage. Conjugates with up to 0.4 mg of BSA/mg MG were prepared. MG/BSA conjugates were still actively phagocytized by mouse peritoneal macrophages. When used to immunize mice by the intradermal route, these conjugates enhanced the primary IgG antibody response to BSA in a manner comparable to the prototypic complete Freund’s adjuvant. Although primary oral immunization with MG/BSA caused no increase in serum anti-BSA antibody titers, booster immunization elicited a significant anti-BSA antibody response. These results suggest that protein antigens can be conjugated to MG via a carbodiimide linkage and that these conjugates provide an adjuvant effect for stimulating the antibody response to the protein antigens.  相似文献

Successful prediction of the potential allergenicity of a protein may be a key factor in the development of novel, genetically modified foods. The use of the decision tree approach for the prediction of allergenicity is discussed. The methods currently used for identifying allergenic proteins (including use of IgE from patient sera for recognition of proteins) are reviewed. Finally, a specific review of the literature concerning identification of allergens from sesame leads to the conclusion that in the absence of validated animal models, identification of allergenicity (and, consequently, prediction of allergenicity) may be problematic.  相似文献
