The dependence of the amplitude and latent period of intracellular on and off responses of the amacrine cells of the isolated, dark-adapted carp retina on the intensity and diameter of the light spot was investigated. On and off responses of amacrine cells to light were shown to consist of fast depolarization responses with oscillations and spikes superposed upon them. With an increase in the intensity and area of the stimulus the latent period of the on response decreases but that of the off response increases. A near-linear relationship was found between the amplitude of the on response and the logarithm of the diameter of the spot up to 3 mm during changes in stimulus intensity of not more than 4 logarithmic units. With an increase in stimulus intensity the amplitude and zone of summation of the off response are reduced; it is suggested that under these circumstances this decrease may be connected with the different amplitude and temporal characteristics of off processes in the bipolar cells converging on the amacrine cells.  相似文献

Unit activity of the frontal cortex during changes in stimulus intensity in the near-threshold range (15–16 dB above the threshold for the combined evoked potential) was investigated by an extracellular recording method in acute experiments on cats anesthetized with chloralose (70 mg/kg). Comparative analysis of unit responses in specific (SI) and nonspecific projection areas revealed basically similar changes in pattern during an increase in stimulus intensity: A decrease in the latent period, an increase in the total frequency and the phasic character of the discharge, and an increase in the probability of response. However, a relatively stable latent period and probability of response were observed in specific projection neurons for a stimulus intensity of 3–5 threshold units, whereas for the nonspecific projection neurons it was observed for a stimulus intensity of 10–15 threshold units. All sensory projections in the frontal cortex are formed by two inputs: short-latency low-threshold and long-latency high-threshold. Analysis of modality-dependent differences in the threshold of sensitivity and the latent period of response of the polysensory neurons suggests that stimuli of different modalities converge directly on cortical neurons.A. It was shown that during 24 h following whole-body exposure of male rats to gamma-quanta (150 Gy) the latent period of their response to the thermal effect increased a "tail-flick" test) and the threshold of the nociceptive response to an electric stimulus (the vocalization threshold) decreased. The possibility that acoustic startle stimuli could support a conditional response (freezing) to contextual stimuli was investigated. Rats were exposed to three acoustic startle stimuli on the first day, and one on the second day. On day 1, 20 rats received naloxone pretreatment and another 20 received saline (placebo) pretreatment. Half of each group received a high-intensity acoustic stimulus, the other half a low-intensity acoustic stimulus. Both the higher stimulus intensity and the naloxone pretreatment led to greater freezing behavior during the 3-minute test period before the single startle stimulus on day 2. These findings support the notion that increased actual or perceived intensity of the acoustic startle stimulus increases conditioning to contextual stimuli as indexed by freezing behavior.  相似文献

An experiment is reported in which the relationship between the intensity of a preexposed stimulus and latent inhibition was investigated, using the taste aversion learning paradigm in rats. Two concentrations of a saline solution (high, 1%; and low, 0.25%) were used during preexposure and conditioning phases in a factorial design. Two control conditions without preexposure were added, one for each stimulus concentration during conditioning. The known effect of conditioned stimulus (CS) intensity during conditioning was confirmed: the more concentrated the solution used in conditioning, the higher the acquisition rate. A direct relationship was observed between the CS intensity used during preexposure and the latent inhibition effect: the more concentrated the solution during preexposure, the lower the acquisition rate of conditioning. The implications of these results for latent inhibition theories are considered.  相似文献

In electrical taste stimulation, current intensity is usuallyconsidered to be a simple equivalent of the taste stimulus intensity,this being analogous to the concentration of a chemical solution.However, there are indications that current density might bea better correlate of the true electrical taste stimulus. Inthe present study the relationship between the size of the stimulatedhuman tongue area, the electrical current intensity, and themagnitude of elicited taste sensations was examined. Tests insix subjects showed that in order to achieve the standard sourtaste magnitude when using electrode sizes that increased insize, the current intensity also had to be increased, but currentdensity decreased. This might be attributed to spatial summationwhich is plausible only if current density was taken as a realelectrical taste stimulus. Summation degree was less than complete,indicating that the density might be a predominant, but notthe only factor in electrical stimulus efficacy.  相似文献

Effects of different doses of nicotinamide, pantogam, pnenazepam, and their combined actions on generalized seizures induced by pentylenetetrazole (60-100 mg/kg) were studied in acute experiments on mice. It was shown that pantogam (500 mg/kg) doubled the latent period of seizures, considerably attenuated the intensity of attacks and lethality, whereas given in a dose of 1000 mg/kg it completely prevented the animals' death. Nicotinamide (250-500 mg/kg) increased the latent period of seizures without affecting the intensity of seizures or lethality. Nicotinamide (1000 mg/kg) prevented the development of clonico-tonic attacks and lethality. The antiseizure effects of nicotinamide depended on the time of its injection. Phenazepam (1.4 mg/kg) abolished seizures and in a dose of 0.1-0.7 mg/kg protected the animals from death and considerably relieved seizure manifestations. During combined injections of these compounds, the antiseizure effect was more pronounced and could be attained by decreasing the drug doses.  相似文献

Experimental evidence suggests that the maintenance of an item in working memory is achieved through persistent activity in selective neural assemblies of the cortex. To understand the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon, it is essential to investigate how persistent activity is affected by external inputs or neuromodulation. We have addressed these questions using a recurrent network model of object working memory. Recurrence is dominated by inhibition, although persistent activity is generated through recurrent excitation in small subsets of excitatory neurons.Our main findings are as follows. (1) Because of the strong feedback inhibition, persistent activity shows an inverted U shape as a function of increased external drive to the network. (2) A transient external excitation can switch off a network from a selective persistent state to its spontaneous state. (3) The maintenance of the sample stimulus in working memory is not affected by intervening stimuli (distractors) during the delay period, provided the stimulation intensity is not large. On the other hand, if stimulation intensity is large enough, distractors disrupt sample-related persistent activity, and the network is able to maintain a memory only of the last shown stimulus. (4) A concerted modulation of GABA A and NMDA conductances leads to a decrease of spontaneous activity but an increase of persistent activity; the enhanced signal-to-noise ratio is shown to increase the resistance of the network to distractors. (5) Two mechanisms are identified that produce an inverted U shaped dependence of persistent activity on modulation. The present study therefore points to several mechanisms that enhance the signal-to-noise ratio in working memory states. These mechanisms could be implemented in the prefrontal cortex by dopaminergic projections from the midbrain.  相似文献

1. Ciona possesses two means of responding to an increase in the intensity of illumination. One is by means of a local reaction; the other is by a retraction reflex of the body as a whole. 2. The "ocelli" are not photoreceptors. The photosensitive area is in the intersiphonal region containing the neural mass. This area contains no pigment. 3. The reaction time to light is composed of a sensitization period during which Ciona must be exposed to the light, and of a latent period during which it need not be illuminated in order to react to the stimulus received during the sensitization period. 4. The duration of the reaction time varies inversely as the intensity. Analysis shows the latent period to be constant. The relation between the sensitization period and the intensity follows the Bunsen-Roscoe rule. 5. During dark adaptation the reaction time is at first large, then it decreases until a constant minimum is reached. 6. A photochemical system consisting of a reversible reaction is suggested in order to account for the phenomena observed. This system includes a photosensitive substance and its precursor, the dynamics of the reaction following closely the peculiarities of the photosensitivity of Ciona. 7. It is shown that in order to produce a reaction, a constant ratio must be reached between the amount of sensitive substance broken down by the stimulus and the amount previously broken down. 8. From the chemical system suggested certain experimental predictions were made. The actual experiments verified these predictions exactly. 9. The results obtained with regularly repeated stimulation not only fail to show any basis for a learning process or for the presence of a "higher behavior," but follow the requirements of the photochemical system suggested before.  相似文献

A method of detecting "minimal" excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSP) in neurons of hippocampal area CA3 of the unanesthetized rabbit during stimulation of the septo-fimbrial region and the dentate fascia is described. The method consists of presenting a strong (a current of up to 1 mA) conditioning stimulus, inducing a distinct inhibitory postsynaptic potential (IPSP), before a near-threshold (current of 0.03–0.35 mA) testing stimulus. The response to the testing stimulus, develoing after the previous conditioning IPSP, in most cases was purely depolarizing and, judging from the change in the latent period in some cases and the absence of correlation between its amplitude and that of the IPSP, it is a pure EPSP. If the testing stimuli are presented at low enough frequency (intervals of not less than 1 sec) the amplitude of the EPSP evoked by them gradually falls. This decrease exhibits some of the characteristic properties of extinction of behavioral responses (recovery after an interruption, a more rapid decrease during repeated series of stimuli, a slower decrease in amplitude during less frequent stimulation). The amplitude of the IPSP also fell or showed no significant change. Previous studies have shown that the interoceptive nicotine conditional stimulus (CS) functions similarly to exteroceptive CSs such as lights or environments. For instance, the appetitive conditioned response (CR) evoked when nicotine is repeatedly paired with sucrose presentations (the unconditioned stimulus; US) is sensitive to changes in training dose (CS salience) and the contiguity between the CS effects and sucrose. The current study was conducted to extend this research by examining the possible role of US intensity in CR acquisition and maintenance. Rats were trained using one of four sucrose concentrations: 0, 4, 16, or 32% (w/v). On nicotine sessions (0.4 mg base/kg), rats received 36 deliveries (4 s each) of their assigned concentration intermittently throughout the session; sucrose was withheld on saline sessions. In all groups, an appetitive goal-tracking CR was acquired at a similar rate. However, the asymptotic CR level varied with sucrose concentration. The magnitude of the CR was increased in rats trained with higher sucrose US concentrations. These findings are consistent with previous Pavlovian conditioning research, and extend the conditions under which the nicotine state functions as an interoceptive conditional stimulus.  相似文献

Responses of 98 neurons of the reticular (R) and 72 neurons of the ventral anterior (VA) thalamic nuclei to stimulation of various zones of the orbitofrontal cortex were investigated in acute experiments on cats immobilized with D-tubocurarine. Not all zones of this cortex were found to be connected equally closely with R and VA. Most of the R (82.7%) and VA (66.7%) neurons responded to stimulation of the proreal gyrus, and fewest (37.3 and 48.9%, respectively) to stimulation of the posterior orbital gyrus. Among the responding neurons, 85.2–86.3% of R cells and 78.2–81.2% of VA cells were excited by cortical stimulation and the rest were inhibited. Excitation was expressed as the appearance of a single spike or of discharges of varied duration in response to each stimulus. The latent period of the spike responses varied from 0.5 to 55.0 msec and the minimal latent period of the discharges was 0.8 msec and its maximal value over 500 msec. The spike frequency in the discharge was 120–250/sec. Unit responses consisting of spikes with a latent period of under 1.3 msec and, it is assumed, some of the responses with a latent period of under 4.0 msec were antidromic. The axons of some R and VA neurons were shown to form branches terminating in different zones of the orbitofrontal cortex.  相似文献

在大鼠坐骨神经慢性压迫模型的放电起步点上,记录单纤维放电的峰峰间期(ISIs)序列。在无钙条件下,ISIs序列进入加周期分岔过程后,通过调定灌流液乙二醇双四乙酸(Ethylene Glycol—bis(β—aminoethyl Ether)N,N,N’,N’-Tetracetic Acid,EGTA,一种钙离子螯合剂)的浓度,使。ISIs序列分别稳定于远离分岔点的周期阶段(称周期阶段)或邻近分岔点的阶段(称临界阶段),分析电场刺激反应与分岔动力学状态的关系。实验观察到,相同强度的电场刺激可使周期阶段和临界阶段的放电频率增加,但后者的增加幅度比前者显著,并伴有放电模式的转化。在周期阶段,随电场刺激强度增大,放电频率近似线性增加,放电模式不变;在临界阶段,当电场刺激达到一定强度时,放电频率增加的斜率显著增大,此时,放电模式也发生转化。结果提示邻近分岔点的临界阶段对电场刺激的反应较周期阶段敏感,称之为“临界敏感”现象。  相似文献

Effects of glucose, insulin, and adrenaline on the feeding latent time and the ration in 3 species of fresh-water teleost fish were studied. There has been shown a significant and uniform effect of glucose (an increase of the feeding latent period, a decrease of the ration) and of adrenaline (an increase of the feeding latent period) at initial stages of exotrophia in fish. The insulin effect on the fish feeding reaction rate is not uniform: apart from a statistically significant decrease of the feeding latent period, there were recorded opposite effects.  相似文献

Summary The existence of a period of latent but stable polarity, i.e. a period in which the polarity axis has been irreversibly established but no morphological asymmetry can be detected, was studied in germinating populations of zygotes of Pelvetia fastigiata. We found that the time course of the loss of sensitivity to a single polarity-axis-determining light stimulus coincided with the time course of germination (rhizoid outgrowth), up to the germination of about one-third the population, showing that the cells remained responsive to the light stimulus until or almost until the appearance of visible asymmetry. In the later part of the germination period, some of the zygotes may have lost their light sensitivity somewhat before rhizoid outgrowth, suggesting that at least some of the ungerminated cells may at this time possess, for a brief period, a latent but stable polarity axis.The loss of responsiveness with time to an antagonistic, second light stimulus followed the same time course as the loss of sensitivity to a single light stimulus. There was no suggestion of the existence of a latent but stable polarity axis in any members of the population in this experiment.An analysis of data of Jaffe (1968) on polarity-axis determination and germination in P. fastigiata following a single light stimulus yields essentially the same conclusions as our own single-light-stimulus experiments.In contrast, analysis of data of Whitaker and Lowrance (1936) on Fucus furcatus indicated that in these zygotes latent but stable determination of the polarity axes had taken place 3–4 hours before germination. A similar situation emerges from the analysis of another experiment of Jaffe (personal communication) with P. fastigiata zygotes in which the loss of sensitivity to an orienting light stimulus appeared accelerated and germination may have been delayed in comparison with his 1968 data.We conclude, therefore, that populations of Fucaceae zygotes may vary with regard to the existence of a latent but stable polarity axis. However, when existence of such a latent, stable polarity axis can be inferred, its duration usually is brief, and it seems to be in most cases limited to a small fraction of the individuals of the total population at any particular time. In order to infer rigorously the existence of latent but stable polarity axes in populations of germinating zygotes and similar cells, it is essential to obtain the time courses for axis stabilization and for the development of visible asymmetry simultaneously.  相似文献

The epileptogenesis may involve a variety of signaling events that culminate with synaptic reorganization. Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and AKT may be activated by diverse stimulus including neurotransmitter, oxidative stress, growth factors and cytokines and are involved in synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex. The pilocarpine model in rodents reproduces the main features of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy related to hippocampus sclerosis (MTLE-HS) in humans. We analyze the phosphorylation profile of MAPKs (ERK1/2, p38(MAPK), JNK1/2/3) and AKT by western blotting in the hippocampus (Hip) and cortex (Ctx) of male adult wistar rats in different periods, after pilocarpine induced status epilepticus (Pilo-SE) and compared with control animals. Biochemical analysis were done in the Hip and Ctx at 1, 3, 12?h (acute period), 5?days (latent period) and 50?days (chronic period) after Pilo-SE onset. Hence, the main findings include increased phosphorylation of ERK1 and p38(MAPK) in the Hip and Ctx 1 and 12?h after the Pilo-SE onset. The JNK2/3 isoform (54?kDa) phosphorylation was decreased at 3?h after the Pilo-SE onset and in the chronic period in the Hip and Ctx. The AKT phosphorylation increased only in the Hip during the latent period. Our study demonstrates, in a systematic manner, the profile of MAPKs and AKT modulation in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex in response to pilocarpine. Based in the role of each signaling enzyme is possible that these changes may be related, at least partially, to modifications in the intrinsic neuronal physiology and epileptogenic synaptic network that appears in the MTLE-HS.  相似文献

When stimulus intensity in simple reaction-time tasks randomly varies across trials, detection speed usually improves after a low-intensity trial. With auditory stimuli, this improvement was often found to be asymmetric, being greater on current low-intensity trials. Our study investigated (1) whether asymmetric sequential intensity adaptation also occurs with visual stimuli; (2) whether these adjustments reflect decision-criterion shifts or, rather, a modulation of perceptual sensitivity; and (3) how sequential intensity adaptation and its underlying mechanisms are affected by mental fatigue induced through prolonged performance. In a continuous speeded detection task with randomly alternating high- and low-intensity visual stimuli, the reaction-time benefit after low-intensity trials was greater on subsequent low- than high-intensity trials. This asymmetry, however, only developed with time on task (TOT). Signal-detection analyses showed that the decision criterion transiently became more liberal after a low-intensity trial, whereas observer sensitivity increased when the preceding and current stimulus were of equal intensity. TOT-induced mental fatigue only affected sensitivity, which dropped more on low- than on high-intensity trials. This differential fatigue-related sensitivity decrease selectively enhanced the impact of criterion down-shifts on low-intensity trials, revealing how the interplay of two perceptual mechanisms and their modulation by fatigue combine to produce the observed overall pattern of asymmetric performance adjustments to varying visual intensity in continuous speeded detection. Our results have implications for similar patterns of sequential demand adaptation in other cognitive domains as well as for real-world prolonged detection performance.  相似文献

In rats of the Krushinskii-Molodkina (KM) line with hereditary predisposition to audiogenic convulsions there were studied effects of total sleep deprivation for 3, 6, and 9 h by a light arousal or a slow rotation in a roller on spectral EEG characteristics in the wakefulness-sleep cycle, organization of the cycle, and intensity of convulsive symptoms at the recovery period. The data are presented on dynamics of recovery of the cycle structure for 12 h of postdeprivation period. It has been established that during and after the total sleep deprivations of any duration no paroxysmal discharges appear in EEG of hippocampus, caudate nucleus, medial central thalamic nucleus, somatosensory, visual, and auditory cerebral cortex in any of states of the wakefulness-sleep cycle. These deprivations were also shown to have no effect on the latent period value and parameters of generalized tonic-clonal audiogenic convulsions. At the same time, after 6 and 9 h of the total sleep deprivations in a slowly rotating roller there was revealed in some animals a change of the type of response to the sound stimulus. Such decrease of reaction of rats to audiogenic stimuli seems to be due to alertness of the animals. The dynamics of freezing and flight reactions in juvenile rats was investigated. The rats were tested on the 20th, 25th, 35th, and 40th postnatal days. A sound of 6-sec duration (bell) was used as a threatening stimulus. The following parameters were recorded: number of rearing reactions and defecations within 5 min prior to stimulation, reactions to the bell, latent periods and durations of freezing reactions, freezing posture rigidity, and time of recovery of movements after freezing. It was shown that the intensity of freezing reduced in the period from the 20th to 35th postnatal day. The flight reactions were highest on the 25th and 40th days. Correlations between freezing indices and numbers of rearing and defecation reactions were different in rats of all age groups. The results suggest that the structure of defensive behavior changes with maturation of principal defensive reactions in rats within the first 40 postnatal days.  相似文献

The effect of low frequency auricular electroacupuncture (EAP) on electromyographic responses (EMGR) of the anterior belly of the digastruc muscle, elicited by stimulation of tooth pulp was studied in cat experiments. It was shown that observed augmentation of the EMGR amplitude produced by EAP depended on tonic activation of gamma-motoneurons of the muscle. This activation directly correlated with EAP intensity. At the same time the latent period of EMGR increased by one-two synapses on account of inhibiting shorter pathways in the afferent part of the reflex arch with intensive EAP. The inhibition of EAP-induced augmentation of EMGR can be achieved by administration of small doses of barbiturates that potentiate the analgetic action of EAP.  相似文献
