This study analyzed leg muscle activity during whole-body vibration (WBV) training. Subjects performed standard unloaded isometric exercises on a vibrating platform (Power Plate): high squat (HS), low squat (LS), and 1-legged squat (OL). Muscle activity of the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and gastrocnemius was recorded in 15 men (age 21.2 +/- 0.8 years) through use of surface electromyography (EMG). The exercises were performed in 2 conditions: with WBV and without (control [CO]) a vibratory stimulus of 35 Hz. Muscle activation during WBV was compared with CO and with muscle activation during isolated maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs). Whole-body vibration resulted in a significantly higher (p < 0.05) EMG root-mean-square compared with CO in all muscle groups and all exercises (between +39.9 +/- 17.5% and +360.6 +/- 57.5%). The increase in muscle activity caused by WBV was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in OL compared with HS and LS. In conclusion, WBV resulted in an increased activation of the leg muscles. During WBV, leg muscle activity varied between 12.6 and 82.4% of MVC values.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze trunk muscle activity during bridge style stabilization exercises, when combined with single and double leg support strategies. Twenty-nine healthy volunteers performed bridge exercises in 3 different positions (back, front and side bridges), with and without an elevated leg, and a quadruped exercise with contralateral arm and leg raise ("bird-dog"). Surface EMG was bilaterally recorded from rectus abdominis (RA), external and internal oblique (EO, IO), and erector spinae (ES). Back, front and side bridges primarily activated the ES (approximately 17% MVC), RA (approximately 30% MVC) and muscles required to support the lateral moment (mostly obliques), respectively. Compared with conventional bridge exercises, single leg support produced higher levels of trunk activation, predominantly in the oblique muscles. The bird-dog exercise produced greatest activity in IO on the side of the elevated arm and in the contralateral ES. In conclusion, during a common bridge with double leg support, the antigravity muscles were the most active. When performed with an elevated leg, however, rotation torques increased the activation of the trunk rotators, especially IO. This information may be useful for clinicians and rehabilitation specialists in determining appropriate exercise progression for the trunk stabilizers.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of pre-exhaustion exercise on lower-extremity muscle activation during a leg press exercise. Pre-exhaustion exercise, a technique frequently used by weight trainers, involves combining a single-joint exercise immediately followed by a related multijoint exercise (e.g., a knee extension exercise followed by a leg press exercise). Seventeen healthy male subjects performed 1 set of a leg press exercise with and without pre-exhaustion exercise, which consisted of 1 set of a knee extension exercise. Both exercises were performed at a load of 10 repetitions maximum (10 RM). Electromyography (EMG) was recorded from the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, and gluteus maximus muscles simultaneously during the leg press exercise. The number of repetitions of the leg press exercise performed by subjects with and without pre-exhaustion exercise was also documented. The activation of the rectus femoris and the vastus lateralis muscles during the leg press exercise was significantly less when subjects were pre-exhausted (p < 0.05). No significant EMG change was observed for the gluteus maximus muscle. When in a pre-exhausted state, subjects performed significantly (p < 0.001) less repetitions of the leg press exercise. Our findings do not support the popular belief of weight trainers that performing pre-exhaustion exercise is more effective in order to enhance muscle activity compared with regular weight training. Conversely, pre-exhaustion exercise may have disadvantageous effects on performance, such as decreased muscle activity and reduction in strength, during multijoint exercise.  相似文献

 The purpose of this study was to provide objective information on the involvement of different abdominal and hip flexor muscles during various types of common training exercises used in rehabilitation and sport. Six healthy male subjects performed altogether 38 different static and dynamic training exercises – trunk and hip flexion sit-ups, with various combinations of leg position and support, and bi- and unilateral leg lifts. Myoelectric activity was recorded with surface electrodes from the rectus abdominis, obliquus externus, obliquus internus, rectus femoris, and sartorius muscles and with indwelling fine-wire electrodes from the iliacus muscle. The mean electromyogram amplitude, normalised to the highest observed value, was compared between static and dynamic exercises separately. The hip flexors were highly activated only in exercises involving hip flexion, either lifting the whole upper body or the legs. In contrast, the abdominal muscles showed marked activation both during trunk and hip flexion sit-ups. In hip flexion sit-ups, flexed and supported legs increased hip flexor activation, whereas such modifications did not generally alter the activation level of the abdominals. Bilateral, but not unilateral, leg lifts required activation of abdominal muscles. In trunk flexion sit-ups an increased activation of the abdominal muscles was observed with increased flexion angle, whereas the opposite was true for hip flexion sit-ups. Bilateral leg lifts resulted in higher activity levels than hip flexion sit-ups for the iliacus and sartorius muscles, while the opposite was true for rectus femoris muscles. Investigations of trunk muscle activation during gait are rare in the literature. As yet, the small body of literature on trunk muscle activation during gait does not include any systematic study on the influence of walking speed. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze trunk muscle activation patterns at different walking speeds. Fifteen healthy men were investigated during walking on a treadmill at speeds of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 km/h. Five trunk muscles were investigated using surface EMG (SEMG). Data were time normalized according to stride time and grand averaged SEMG curves were calculated. From these data stride characteristics were extracted: mean SEMG amplitude, minimum SEMG level and the variation coefficient (VC) over the stride period. With increasing walking speed, muscle activation patterns remained similar in terms of phase dependent activation during stride, but mean amplitudes increased generally. Phasic activation, indicated by VC, increased also, but remained almost unchanged for the back muscles (lumbar multifidus and erector spinae) between 4 and 6 km/h. During stride, minimum amplitude reached a minimum at 4 km/h for the back muscles, but for internal oblique muscle it decreased continuously from 2 to 6 km/h. Cumulative sidewise activation of all investigated muscles reached maximum amplitudes during the contralateral heel strike and propulsion phases. The observed changes argue for a speed dependent modulation of activation of trunk muscles within the investigated range of walking speeds prior to strictly maintaining certain activation characteristics for all walking speeds.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Exercise beliefs abound regarding variations in strength training techniques on muscle activation levels yet little research has validated these ideas. The purpose of the study is to determine muscle activation level, expressed as a percent of a normalization contraction, of the latissimus dorsi, biceps brachii and middle trapezius/rhomboids muscle groups during a series of different exercise tasks. METHODS: The average muscle activity during four tasks; wide grip pulldown, reverse grip pull down [RGP], seated row with retracted scapula, and seated rows with non-retracted scapulae was quantified during two 10 second isometric portions of the four exercises. A repeated measures ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey test was used to determine the influence of exercise type on muscle activity for each muscle. RESULTS & DISCUSSION: No exercise type influenced biceps brachii activity. The highest latissimus dorsi to biceps ratio of activation occurred during the wide grip pulldown and the seated row. Highest levels of myoelectric activity in the middle trapezius/rhomboid muscle group occurred during the seated row. Actively retracting the scapula did not influence middle trapezius/rhomboid activity. CONCLUSION: Variations in latissimus dorsi exercises are capable of producing small changes in the myoelectric activity of the primary movers.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the extent of activation in various trunk muscles during dynamic weight-training and isometric instability exercises. Sixteen subjects performed squats and deadlifts with 80% 1 repetition maximum (1RM), as well as with body weight as resistance and 2 unstable calisthenic-type exercises (superman and sidebridge). Electromyographic (EMG) activity was measured from the lower abdominals (LA), external obliques (EO), upper lumbar erector spinae (ULES), and lumbar-sacral erector spinae (LSES) muscle groups. Results indicated that the LSES EMG activity during the 80% 1RM squat significantly exceeded 80% 1RM deadlift LSES EMG activity by 34.5%. The LSES EMG activity of the 80% 1RM squat also exceeded the body weight squat, deadlift, superman, and sidebridge by 56, 56.6, 65.5, and 53.1%, respectively. The 80% 1RM deadlift ULES EMG activity significantly exceeded the 80% 1RM squat exercise by 12.9%. In addition, the 80% 1RM deadlift ULES EMG activity also exceeded the body weight squat, deadlift, superman, and sidebridge exercises by 66.7, 65.5, 69.3, and 68.6%, respectively. There were no significant changes in EO or LA activity. Therefore, the augmented activity of the LSES and ULES during 80% 1RM squat and deadlift resistance exercises exceeded the activation levels achieved with the same exercises performed with body weight and selected instability exercises. Individuals performing upright, resisted, dynamic exercises can achieve high trunk muscle activation and thus may not need to add instability device exercises to augment core stability training.  相似文献

Despite the popularity of resistance training (RT), an accurate method for quantifying its metabolic cost has yet to be developed. We applied indirect calorimetry during bench press (BP) and parallel squat (PS) exercises for 5 consecutive minutes at several steady state intensities for 23 (BP) and 20 (PS) previously trained men. Tests were conducted in random order of intensity and separated by 5 minutes. Resultant steady state VO2 data, along with the independent variables load and distance lifted, were used in multiple regression to predict the energy cost of RT at higher loads. The prediction equation for BP was Y' = 0.132 + (0.031)(X1) + (0.01)(X2), R2 = 0.728 and S(xy) = 0.16; PS can be predicted by Y' = -1.424 + (0.022)(X1) + (0.035)(X2), R2 = 0.656 and S(xy) = 0.314; where Y' is VO2 X1 is the load measured in kg and X2 is the distance in cm. Based on a respiratory exchange ratio (RER) of 1.0 and a caloric equivalent of 5.05 kcal x L(-1), VO2 was converted to caloric expenditure (kcal x min(-1)). Using those equations to predict caloric cost, our resultant values were significantly larger than caloric costs of RT reported in previous investigations. Despite a potential limitation of our equations to maintain accuracy during very high-intensity RT, we propose that they currently represent the most accurate method for predicting the caloric cost of bench press and parallel squat.  相似文献

Magnetic resonance and ultrasound imaging have shown hamstring strain injuries occur most often in the biceps femoris long head (BFLH), and particularly in the proximal vs. distal region of this muscle. Animal research and musculoskeletal modeling (MSK) have detected heterogeneous fascicle behavior within muscle regions, and within fascicles. Understanding architectural behavior differences during muscle contractions may help to discern possible mechanisms behind proximal BFLH injuries. The purpose of our study was to assess the magnitude of shortening of the proximal and distal fascicles of the BFLH under a range of muscle activation levels under isometric conditions using ultrasound imaging (US). Thirteen healthy adults performed targeted sustained isometric contractions while US were taken of the entire BFLH. Measurements of fascicle lengths in both muscle regions were compared at 20%, 30%, 50%, and 67% MVIC. The results showed that while both regions shortened significantly with activation, the proximal fascicles were significantly longer, regardless of activation level (~38%), and shortened significantly more than the distal fascicles overall (~40%), and cumulatively at higher activation levels (30% and above). No significant strain differences were found between the two regions. These data suggest heterogeneous fascicle behavior exists in an absolute sense; however, differences in behavior are eliminated when normalized (strain). Coupled with MSK literature, the absence of regional fascicle strain differences in this study may indicate strain heterogeneity is not detectable at the whole fascicle level. Further knowledge of this commonly strained muscle?s regional behavior during dynamic movements could provide evidence of proximal hamstring strain predisposition.  相似文献

The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of voluntarily manipulating muscle activation and localized muscle fatigue on tibial response parameters, including peak tibial acceleration, time to peak tibial acceleration, and the acceleration slope, measured at the knee during unshod heel impacts. A human pendulum delivered consistent impacts to 15 female and 15 male subjects. The tibialis anterior and lateral gastrocnemius were examined using electromyography, thus allowing voluntary contraction to various activation states (baseline, 15%, 30%, 45%, and 60% of the maximum activation state) and assessing localized muscle fatigue. A skin-mounted uniaxial accelerometer, preloaded medial to the tibial tuberosity, allowed tibial response parameter determination. There were significant decreases in peak acceleration during tibialis anterior fatigue, compared to baseline and all other activation states. In females, increased time to peak acceleration and decreased acceleration slope occurred during fatigue compared to 30% and 45%, and compared to 15% through 60% of the maximum activation state, respectively. Slight peak acceleration and acceleration slope increases, and decreased time to peak acceleration as activation state increased during tibialis anterior testing, were noted. When examining the lateral gastrocnemius, the time to peak acceleration was significantly higher across gender in the middle activation states than at the baseline and fatigue states. The acceleration slope decreased at all activation states above baseline in females, and decreased at 60% of the maximum activation state in males compared to the baseline and fatigue states. Findings agree with localized muscle fatigue literature, suggesting that with fatigue there is decreased impact transmission, which may protect the leg. The relative effects of leg stiffness and ankle angle on tibial response need to be verified.  相似文献

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of repetitive drop jumps (DJ) and isometric leg presses (LP) on the tendon properties in knee extensors. Before and after each endurance test, the elongation (L) of the tendon and aponeurosis of the vastus lateralis muscle was measured directly by ultrasonography while the subjects performed ramp isometric knee extensions up to maximum voluntary isometric contraction. Eight men performed 100 repetitions of the DJ and 50 repetitions of the LP for 10 seconds with 10 seconds relaxation. In the DJ, there were no significant differences in L values at any force production levels before and after each endurance test. In LP, however, the L values above 500 N were significantly greater after the endurance test than before. These results suggest that the tendon properties in knee extensors change to become more compliant after the repeated longer-duration contractions, but not after repeated ballistic exercises.  相似文献

The kinetic and myoelectric differences between 3 types of plyometric push-ups were investigated. Twenty-seven healthy, physically active men served as subjects and completed both familiarization and testing sessions. During these sessions, subjects performed 2 series of 3 plyometric push-up variations in a counterbalanced order according to the following techniques: Countermovement push-ups (CPUs) were push-ups performed with the maximum speed of movement; jump push-ups (JPUs) were similar to clapping push-ups; and fall push-ups (FPUs) required kneeling subjects to drop and then attempt to return to their initial position. Vertical ground reaction forces were determined by using a force plate. Myoelectric activity was recorded by means of electromyography. Impact force and impact rate of force development were significantly (p < 0.05) higher for FPUs than for JPUs. The maximum rate of force development was higher for CPUs (p < 0.05) than for JPUs, and the maximum force was higher for the CPUs than for the FPUs (p < 0.05). There were differences among exercises for the mean muscle activation of the pectoralis major (PM; p < 0.001), triceps brachii (p < 0.001), external oblique (p < 0.005) and anterior deltoid (p < 0.001), and in the maximum muscle activation of the PM (p < 0.001). Plyometric push-ups with countermovement achieved a higher maximum force and rate of force and did not cause impact forces. Thus, this type of push-up exercise may be regarded as the best for improving explosive force. The FPU exercise achieved higher levels of muscular activation in the agonist and synergist muscle groups, and greater impact forces and impact force development rates.  相似文献

Falls and injuries due to falls are a major health concern, and accidental slips are a leading cause of falls during gait. Understanding how the body reacts to an unexpected slip can aid in developing intervention techniques to reduce the number of injuries due to falls. In this study, muscle activation patterns, specifically those of the trailing (non-slipping) limb, were studied in unexpected slips of 24 young and 24 middle-aged adults. The typical reaction of the trailing limb is swing phase interruption in an attempt to arrest the slip. Variables examined were the reactive muscle activation onset, peak electromyography (EMG) magnitude, and time-to-peak of the vastus lateralis and medial hamstring of the trailing limb. Statistical analysis was performed to determine the effects of slip severity, quantified by peak slip velocity, and age on outcome variables. As slip severity increased, the reactive activation onset of the medial hamstring was significantly faster and there was a trend approaching significance for the onset of the vastus lateralis. Additionally, the peak magnitude and time-to-peak of the vastus lateralis increased with slip severity. No significant effects of age were found on any of the output variables. These findings may aid in development of perturbation-based paradigms, as it may be possible to “tune” the postural control system to generate an appropriate response to unexpected slips.  相似文献

The aim was to compare the acute effects of bench press (BP) and squat (SQ) exercises with blood flow restriction (BFR) (40%, 60%, 80% and 100% of the complete arterial occlusion pressure (AOP)) and without BFR (CON) on the mean propulsive (VelMED) and maximum (VelMAX) bar velocity. Fourteen healthy, physically active males (age, 23.6 ± 4.1 years; height, 1.85 ± 0.11 m; body weight 85.4 ± 4.1 kg) took part in the study. There was one set for each testing condition (CON, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%) with 6 repetitions for BP and 6 repetitions for SQ, at 60% of 1RM, and 3 minutes of recovery between sets. The results showed statistically significant differences of the sets with 80% BFR vs. CON (mean difference [MD] = 0.035 m · s-1, p < 0.05, ES = 0.52 [1.02–0.03]) and 100% BFR sets vs. CON (MD = 0.074, p < 0.001, ES = 1.08 [1.79–0.38]) for BP. In the SQ exercise, statistically significant differences were found between 100% BFR vs. CON (DM = 0.031 m · s-1, p < 0.05), vs. 100% BFR 40% (MD = 0.04 m · s-1, p < 0.05). Trend analysis showed a statistically significant linear trend (F[1,9] = 34.9, p < 0.001, F[1,13] = 27.32, p < 0.001) for the VelMED in relation to the different levels of BFR. In conclusion, our results showed that BFR levels above ˜80% AOP (BP) and ˜100% AOP (SQ) produce a VelMED improvement at 60% 1RM.  相似文献

Motor unit activation patterns were studied during four different force levels of concentric and eccentric actions. Eight male subjects performed concentric and eccentric forearm flexions with the movement range from 100 degrees to 60 degrees in concentric and from 100 degrees to 140 degrees elbow angle in eccentric actions. The movements were started either from zero preactivation or with isometric preactivation of the force levels of 20, 40, 60 and 80% MVC. The subjects were then instructed to maintain the corresponding relative force levels during the dynamic actions. Intramuscular and surface EMG was recorded from biceps brachii muscle. Altogether 28 motoneuron pools were analyzed using the intramuscular spike-amplitude frequency (ISAF) analysis technique of Moritani et al. The mean spike amplitude was lower and the mean spike frequency higher in the isometric preactivation phase than in the consequent concentric and eccentric actions. When the movements started with isometric preactivation the mean spike amplitude increased significantly (P<0.001) up to 80% in isometric and concentric actions but in eccentric actions the increase continued only up to 60% (P<0.01). The mean spike frequency in isometric preactivation and in concentric action with preactivation was lower only at the 20% force level (P<0.01) as compared to the other force levels while in eccentric action with preactivation the increase between the force levels was significant (P<0.01) up to 60%. When the movement was started without preactivation the mean spike amplitude at 20% and at 40% force level was higher (P<0.01) in eccentric action than in concentric actions. It was concluded that the recruitment threshold may be lower in dynamic as compared to isometric actions. The recruitment of fast motor units may continue to higher force levels in isometric and in concentric as in eccentric actions which, on the other hand, seems to achieve the higher forces by increasing the firing rate of the active units. At the lower force levels mean spike amplitude was higher in eccentric than in concentric actions which might indicate selective activation of fast motor units. This was, however, the case only when the movements were started without isometric preactivation.  相似文献

The basic principles governing trajectories of change in muscle length (henceforth referred to as "movement") were analyzed at varying rates of distributed afferent stimulation during experiments on the soleus and plantaris muscles in unanesthetized cats. The theoretical possibility of describing evoked movements within the context of a model having nonlinear hysteresis properties and dependence of dynamic parameters on direction of movement were demonstrated. A difference in static transitions between muscle contraction and lengthening was found and vice versa and retardation of movement at the start of lengthening reaction (induced by a reduced efferent stimulation rate) was more pronounced. Interaction was discovered between two disruptive influences: changes in the rate of efferent stimulation and external load, mainly due to hysteresis effects of muscle contraction. The trajectory of movement produced by alteration in one of the inputs at work (external load or afferent stimulation) is associated with the lead-up to the muscle motion, irrespective of the reason inducing the foregoing movement. Information about anaerobic energy production and mechanical efficiency that occurs over time during short-lasting maximal exercise is scarce and controversial. Bilateral leg press is an interesting muscle contraction model to estimate anaerobic energy production and mechanical efficiency during maximal exercise because it largely differs from the models used until now. This study examined the changes in muscle metabolite concentration and power output production during the first and the second half of a set of 10 repetitions to failure (10RM) of bilateral leg press exercise. On two separate days, muscle biopsies were obtained from vastus lateralis prior and immediately after a set of 5 or a set of 10 repetitions. During the second set of 5 repetitions, mean power production decreased by 19% and the average ATP utilisation accounted for by phosphagen decreased from 54% to 19%, whereas ATP utilisation from anaerobic glycolysis increased from 46 to 81%. Changes in contraction time and power output were correlated to the changes in muscle Phosphocreatine (PCr; r = −0.76; P<0.01) and lactate (r = −0.91; P<0.01), respectively, and were accompanied by parallel decreases (P<0.01-0.05) in muscle energy charge (0.6%), muscle ATP/ADP (8%) and ATP/AMP (19%) ratios, as well as by increases in ADP content (7%). The estimated average rate of ATP utilisation from anaerobic sources during the final 5 repetitions fell to 83% whereas total anaerobic ATP production increased by 9% due to a 30% longer average duration of exercise (18.4±4.0 vs 14.2±2.1 s). These data indicate that during a set of 10RM of bilateral leg press exercise there is a decrease in power output which is associated with a decrease in the contribution of PCr and/or an increase in muscle lactate. The higher energy cost per repetition during the second 5 repetitions is suggestive of decreased mechanical efficiency.  相似文献

The subjects of this study (n = 20; 16 women, 4 men) performed 10 weeks of leg press training using one of two exercise modes (isoload or isotonic) with no crossover. Their workouts, which were performed 3 times per week, involved 4 sets of 8 repetitions with maximal voluntary effort. Testing was performed pre- and posttraining to examine bone and muscle changes. Posttraining, both groups incurred significant concentric knee extensor strength and leg muscle mass gains, while the percentage of body fat and total body fat mass each decreased. Leg and total body bone mineral densities showed group-by-time interactions, as isoload exercise caused posttraining gains, while isoinertial values were unchanged. Bone resorption assays showed insignificant changes. Isoload training likely involved greater strain magnitudes and rates to evoke higher peak forces and osteogenesis. Transduction of the training stimulus may have involved (a) formation in response to microdamage, and (b) piezoelectric-induced potentials that stimulated site-specific osteoblast activity and osteogenesis.  相似文献

BackgroundChanges in activation patterns of hip extensors and pelvic stabilizing muscles are recognized as factors that cause low back disorders and these disturbances could have an impact on the physiological loading and alter the direction and magnitude of joint reaction forces.ObjectiveTo investigate activation patterns of the gluteus maximus, semitendinosus and erector spinae muscles with healthy young individuals during four different modalities of therapeutic exercise.MethodsThirty-one volunteers were selected: (16 men and 15 women), age (24.5 ± 3.47 years), body mass of 66.89 ± 11.89 kg and a height of 1.70 ± 0.09 m). They performed four modalities of therapeutic exercise while the electromyographic activity of the investigated muscles was recorded to determine muscle pattern activation for each exercise.ResultsRepeated measure ANOVA revealed that muscle activation patterns were similar for the four analyzed exercises, starting with the semitendinosus, followed by the erector spinae, and then, the gluteus maximus. The gluteus maximus was the last activated muscle during hip extension associated with knee flexion (p < 0.0001), knee extension (p < 0.0001), and with lateral rotation and knee flexion (p < 0.05).ConclusionFindings of the present study suggested that despite individual variability, the muscle firing order was similar for the four therapeutic exercises.  相似文献
