A pilot scale experiment was performed for a year to develop a two-phase anaerobic process for piggery wastewater treatment (COD: 6,000 mg/L, BOD: 4,000 mg/L, SS: 500 gm/L, pH 8.4, alkalinity 6,000 mg/L). The acidogenic reactor had a total volume of 3 m3, and the methanogenic reactor, an, anaerobic up-flow sludge filter, combining a filter and a sludge bed, was also of total volume 3 m3 (1.5 m3 of upper packing material). Temperatures of the acidogenic and methanogenic reactors kept at 20°C and 35°C., respectively. When the pH of the acidogenic reactor was controlled at 6.0–7.0 with HCl, the COD removal efficiency increased from 50 to 80% over a period of six months, and as a result, the COD of the final effluent fell in the range of 1,000–1,500 mg/L. BOD removal efficiency over the same period was above 90%, and 300 to 400 mg/L was maintained in the final effluent. The average SS in the final effluent was 270 mg/L. The methane production was 0.32 m3 CH4/kg CODremoved and methane content of the methanogenic reactor was high value at 80–90%., When the pH of the acidogenic reactor was not controlled over the final two months, the pH reached 8.2 and acid conversion decreased compared with that of pH controlled, while COD removal was similar to the pH controlled operation. Without pH control, the methane content in the gas from methanogenic reactor improved to 90%, compared to 80% with pH control.  相似文献

The applicability of anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) was investigated for the treatment of acidic (pH 4.5–7.0) wastewater containing sulfate (1000–2000 mg/L) and Zn (65–200 mg/L) at 35 °C. The ABR consisted of four equal stages and lactate was supplemented (COD/SO42− = 0.67) as carbon and energy source for sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). The robustness of the system was studied by decreasing pH and increasing Zn, COD, and sulfate loadings. Sulfate-reduction efficiency quickly increased during the startup period and reached 80% within 45 days. Decreasing feed pH, increasing feed sulfate and Zn concentrations did not adversely affect system performance as sulfate reduction and COD removal efficiencies were within 62–90% and 80–95%, respectively. Although feed pH was steadily decreased from 7.0 to 4.5, effluent pH was always within 6.8–7.5. Over 99% Zn removal was attained throughout the study due to formation of Zn-sulfide precipitate.  相似文献

Sulfidogenic fluidized bed treatment of real acid mine drainage water   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The treatment of real acid mine drainage water (pH 2.7-4.3) containing sulfate (1.5-3.34 g/L) and various metals was studied in an ethanol-fed sulfate-reducing fluidized bed reactor at 35 °C. The robustness of the process was tested by increasing stepwise sulfate, ethanol and metal loading rates and decreasing feed pH and hydraulic retention time. Highest sulfate reduction rate (4.6 g/L day) was obtained with feed sulfate concentration of 2.5 g/L, COD/sulfate ratio of 0.85 and HRT of 12 h. The corresponding sulfate and COD removal efficiencies were about 90% and 80%, respectively. The alkalinity produced in sulfidogenic ethanol oxidation neutralized the acidic mine water. Highest metal precipitation efficiencies were observed at HRT of 24 h, the percent metal removal being over 99.9% for Al (initial concentration 55 mg/L), Co (9.0 mg/L), Cu (49 mg/L), Fe (435 mg/L), Ni (3.8 mg/L), Pb (7.5 mg/L) and Zn (6.6 mg/L), and 94% for Mn (7.21 mg/L).  相似文献

In order to treat the kitchen wastes and produce hydrogen, anaerobic fermentation technology was used in this experiment. The results showed that the fermentation type changed from mixed acid fermentation to ethanol fermentation in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) 22 days after start-up. The maximum efficiency of hydrogen bio-production in the CSTR was 4.77 LH2/(L reactor d) under the following conditions: organic loading rate (OLR) of 32–50 kg COD/(m3 d), oxidation reduction potential (ORP) of −450 to −400 mV, influent pH value of 5.0–6.0, effluent pH value of 4.0–4.5, influent alkalinity of 300–600 mg/l, temperature of 35 ± 1°C and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 7 h. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was established, and each parameter influencing the performance of the reactor was compared using the method of partitioning connection weights (PCW). The results showed that OLR, pH, ORP and alkalinity could influence the fermentation characteristics and hydrogen yield of the anaerobic activated sludge; with an influence hierarchy: OLR > pH values > ORP > alkalinity. An economic analysis showed that the cost of producing hydrogen in this experiment was less than the cost of electrolysis of water.  相似文献

Bioleaching of heavy metals from contaminated soil was carried out using indigenous sulfur oxidizing bacterium Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans. Experiments were carried out by varying sulfur/soil ratio from 0.03 to 0.33 to evaluate the optimum ratio for efficient bioleaching of heavy metals from soil. The influence of sulfur/soil ratio on the bioleaching efficiency was assessed based on decrease in pH, increase in oxidation–reduction potential, sulfate production and solubilization of heavy metals from the soil. Decrease in pH, increase in oxidation–reduction potential and sulfate production was found to be better with the increase in sulfur/soil ratio. While the final pH of the system with different sulfur/soil ratio was in the range of 4.1–0.7, oxidation reduction potential varied from 230 to 629 mV; sulfate production was in the range of 2,786–8,872 mg/l. Solubilization of chromium, zinc, copper, lead and cadmium from the contaminated soil was in the range of 11–99%. Findings of the study will help to optimize the ratio of sulfur/soil to achieve effective bioleaching of heavy metals from contaminated soils.  相似文献

A full-scale jet biogas internal loop anaerobic fluidized bed (JBILAFB) reactor, which requires low energy input and allows enhanced mass transfer, was constructed for the treatment of food processing wastewater. This reactor has an active volume of 798 m3 and can treat 33.3 m3 wastewater per hour. After pre-treating the raw wastewater by settling, oil separating and coagulation-air floating processes, the reactor was operated with a relatively shorter start-up time (55 days). Samples for the influent and effluent of the JBILAFB reactor were taken and analyzed daily for the whole process including both the start-up and stable running periods. When the volumetric COD loading fluctuated in the range of 1.6–5.6 kg COD m−3 day−1, the COD removal efficiency, the volatile fatty acid(VFA)/alkalinity ratio, the maximum biogas production and the content of CH4 in total biogas of the reactor were found to be 80.1 ± 5%, 0.2–0.5, 348.5 mday−1 and 94.5 ± 2.5%, respectively. Furthermore, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) results showed that anaerobic granular sludge and microorganism particles with biofilm coexisted in the reactor, and that the bacteria mainly in bacilli and cocci were observed as predominant species. All the data demonstrated that the enhanced mass transfer for gas, liquid and solid phases was achieved, and that the formation of microorganism granules and the removal of inhibitors increased the stability of the system.  相似文献

The performance of a fluidized-bed reactor (FBR) based sulfate reducing bioprocess was predicted using artificial neural network (ANN). The FBR was operated at high (65 degrees C) temperature and it was fed with iron (40-90 mg/L) and sulfate (1,000-1,500 mg/L) containing acidic (pH = 3.5-6) synthetic wastewater. Ethanol was supplemented as carbon and electron source for sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). The wastewater pH of 4.3-4.4 was neutralized by the alkalinity produced in acetate oxidation and the average effluent pH was 7.8 +/- 0.8. The oxidation of acetate is the rate-limiting step in the sulfidogenic ethanol oxidation by thermophilic SRB, which resulted in acetate accumulation. Sulfate reduction and acetate oxidation rates showed variation depending on the operational conditions with the maximum rates of 1 g/L/d (0.2 g/g volatile solids (VS)/d) and 0.3 g/L/d (0.06 g/g VS/d), respectively. This study presents an ANN model predicting the performance of the reactor and determining the optimal architecture of this model; such as best back-propagation (BP) algorithm and neuron numbers. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was selected as the best of 12 BP algorithms and optimal neuron number was determined as 20. The developed ANN model predicted acetate (R=0.91), sulfate (R=0.95), sulfide (R=0.97), and alkalinity (R=0.94) in the FBR effluent. Hence, the ANN based model can be used to predict the FBR performance, to control the operational conditions for improved process performance.  相似文献

This study was carried out to determine the effect of influent pH and alkalinity on the performance of sequential UASB and RBC reactors for the removal of 2-CP and 2,4-DCP from two different simulated wastewaters. The performance of methanogens at low (<6.0) to high (>8.0) pH values and at sufficiently high alkalinity (1500–3500 mg/l as CaCO3) is described in this paper. Sequential reactors were capable of handling wastewaters with influent pH, 5.5–8.5. However, with influent pH 7.0 ± 0.1 UASB reactor showed best performance for 2-CP (99%) and 2,4-DCP (88%) removals. Increase in alkalinity/COD ratio in the influent (>1.1) caused gradual decrease in the chlorophenol removal in UASB reactors. The UASB reactors could not tolerate wastewater with higher alkalinity/COD ratio (2.6) and showed significant deterioration of its performance in terms of chlorophenols removal achieving only 74.7% 2-CP and 60% 2,4-DCP removals, respectively.  相似文献

An on-site pilot-scale static granular bed reactor (SGBR) system was evaluated for treating wastewater from a slaughterhouse in Iowa. The study evaluated SGBR reactor suitability for slaughterhose wastewater having high particulate COD concentration (7.9 ± 4.3 g COD/L) at 0.3–1.4 m3/m2/day of the surface loading rates. High organic removal efficiency (over 95% of TSS and VSS removal) was obtained due to the consistent treatability of SGBR system during operation at HRTs of 48, 36, 30, 24, and 20 h. The average effluent TSS, VSS, COD, soluble COD, and BOD5 concentrations were 84, 71, 301,197, and 87 mg/L, respectively. An effective backwash procedure was performed once every 7–14 days to waste a portion of the accumulated solids in the system. This procedure limited the increase in hydraulic head loss and maintained the system stability. COD removal efficiencies greater than 95% were achieved at organic loading rates ranging from 0.77 to 12.76 kg/m3/day.  相似文献

A two-stage lab-scale UASB reactor, incorporating a selector-type UASB prior to the main reactor was operated at 37 °C with an easily biodegradable food wastewater having a COD of 3,000 mg/L. Varying the hydraulic retention time from 25 to 5 h, the removal of COD by the two-stage process was higher than 95%. Effluent soluble COD was consistently below 75 mg/L and the methane production rate close to theoretical values. The selector UASB removed the majority of the organic load (70–90%) at high organic loading rate, i.e. between 6 and 30 g/(Ld) and the granular sludge developed was characterized by dense microbial colonies, high volatile suspended solids’ content and high substrate degradation efficiency. Design of a two-stage process, incorporating a selector and a second UASB reactor, was able to achieve stable and complete substrate degradation at overall loading rates of the order of ~10–15 g/(Ld).  相似文献

A laboratory scale experiment was described in this paper to enhance biological nitrogen removal by simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) via nitrite with a sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR). Under conditions of total nitrogen (TN) about 30 mg/L and pH ranged 7.15–7.62, synthetic wastewater was cyclically operated within the reactor for 110 days. Optimal operation conditions were established to obtain consistently high TN removal rate and nitrite accumulation ratio, which included an optimal temperature of 31 °C and an aeration time of 5 h under the air flow of 50 L/h. Stable nitrite accumulation could be realized under different temperatures and the nitrite accumulation ratio increased with an increase of temperature from 15 to 35 °C. The highest TN removal rate (91.9%) was at 31 °C with DO ranged 3–4 mg/L. Process control could be achieved by observing changes in DO and pH to judge the end-point of oxidation of ammonia and SND.  相似文献

Potential treatment alternative for laboratory effluents   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The Chemical Analysis Laboratory under study weekly generates 46.5 L effluent with low pH (0.7), high COD concentration (6535 mg O2/L), sulphate (10390 mg/L) and heavy metals (213 mg Hg/L, 55 mg Cr/L, 28 mg Al/L, 22 mg Fe/L, 10mg Cu/L, 4 mg Ag/L). A treatment sequence has been proposed using a physical chemical step (coagulation/flocculation or chemical precipitation) followed by a biological step (anaerobic treatment). Removals of COD (18%), turbidity (76%) and heavy metals (64-99%) were attained only after adjusting pH to 6.5, without requiring the addition of Al2(SO4)3 and FeCl3. Due to the low COD:sulphate ratio (0.9-1.3), it was possible to efficiently operate the UASB reactor (at the biological step) only upon mixing the effluent with household wastewater. COD, sulphate and heavy metals removals of 60%, 23% and 78% to 100%, respectively, were attained for 30% effluent in the reactor feed. The results pointed to the need of a pretreatment step and mixing the effluent in household wastewater prior to the biological step. This alternative is feasible as this can be achieved using sanitary wastewater generated in the university campus.  相似文献

Varying chemical oxygen demand (COD) and sulphate concentrations in substrate were used to determine reaction kinetics and mass balance of organic matter and sulphate transformation in a microbial fuel cell (MFC). MFC with anodic chamber volume of 1 L, fed with wastewater having COD of 500 mg/L and sulphate of 200 mg/L, could harvest power of 54.4 mW/m2, at a Coulombic efficiency of 14%, with respective COD and sulphate removals of 90 and 95%. Sulphide concentration, even up to 1500 mg/L, did not inhibit anodic biochemical reactions, due to instantaneous abiotic oxidation to sulphur, at high inlet sulphate. Experiments on abiotic oxidation of sulphide to sulphur revealed maximum oxidation taking place at an anodic potential of −200 mV. More than 99% sulphate removal could be achieved in a MFC with inlet COD/sulphate of 0.75, giving around 1.33 kg/m3 day COD removal. Bioelectrochemical conversion of sulphate facilitating sulphur recovery in a MFC makes it an interesting pollution abatement technique.

The effectiveness of operating an industrial UASB reactor, treating wastewater from the beer industry, with flows containing heavy metals was evaluated. A pilot-scale UASB reactor, already used to simulate the industrial reactor, was unsuccessfully employed. An easy start-up was obtained arranging it as an EGSB reactor. Considerations about this modification are reported. The effects of Cu(II), Ni(II) and Cr(III) ions on the anaerobic activity were analyzed by measurements of methane production rate and COD removal. The employed biomass was the sludge of the industrial UASB reactor, while a solution of ethanol and sodium acetate with COD of 3000 mg/L and a heavy metal concentration of 50 mg/L were continuously fed. Experimental results proved higher biomass sensitivity for copper and much slighter for nickel and chromium. Moreover, copper inhibition has been demonstrated to be less significant if a metal-free feed was provided to the system before copper addition.  相似文献

This study reports the feasibility of recovering metal precipitates from a synthetic acidic wastewater containing ethanol, Fe, Zn, and Cd at an organic loading rate of 2.5 g COD/L-day and a COD to sulfate ratio of 0.8 in a sulfate reducing down-flow fluidized bed reactor. The metals were added at increasing loading rates: Fe from 104 to 320 mg/L-day, Zn from 20 to 220 mg/L-day, and Cd from 5 to 20 mg/L-day. The maximum COD and sulfate removals attained were 54% and 41%, respectively. The biofilm reactor was operated at pH as low as 5.0 with stable performance, and no adverse effect over COD consumption or sulfide production was observed. The metals precipitation efficiencies obtained for Fe, Zn, and Cd exceeded 99.7%, 99.3%, and 99.4%, respectively. The total recovered precipitate was estimated to be 90% of the theoretical mass expected as metal sulfides. The precipitate was mainly recovered from the bottom of the reactor and the equalizer. The analysis of the precipitates showed the presence of pyrite (FeS2), sphalerite (ZnS) and greenockite (CdS); no metal hydroxides or carbonates in crystalline phases were identified. This study is the first in reporting the feasibility to recover metal sulfides separated from the biomass in a sulfate reducing process in one stage.  相似文献

The treatment of simulated acidic wastewater (pH 2.5–5)containing sulfate (1.0–2.2 g l-1), zinc (15–340 mg l -1) and iron (57 mg l -1) was studied in a sulfate-reducing fluidized-bed reactor (FBR) at 35 °C.The original lactate feed for enrichment and maintenance of the FBRculture was replaced stepwise with ethanol over 50 days. The robustnessof the process was studied by increasing stepwise the Zn, sulfate andethanol feed concentrations and decreasing the feed pH. The following precipitation rates were obtained: 360 mg l -1 d -1 for Zn and 86 mg l -1 d -1 for Fe, with over 99.8% Zn and Fe removal, with a hydraulic retention time of 16 h. Under these conditions, 77–95% of the electrons were accepted by sulfate reduction. The alkalinity produced from ethanol oxidation increased the wastewater pH from 2.5 to 7.5–8.5. Michaelis–Menten constants (Km) determined in batch FBR experiments, were 4.3–7.1 mg l -1 and 2.7–3.5 mg l -1 for ethanol and acetateoxidation, respectively. The maximum oxidation velocities (Vmax)were 0.19–0.22 mg gVS -1 min -1 and0.033–0.035 mg gVS -1 min -1, for ethanol and acetate, respectively. In summary, the FBR process produced a good quality effluent as indicated by its low organic content and Zn and Fe concentrations below0.1 mg l -1.  相似文献

The performance of an intermittently aerated sequencing batch reactor (IASBR) technology was investigated in achieving partial nitrification, organic matter removal and nitrogen removal from separated digestate liquid after anaerobic digestion of pig manure. The wastewater had chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations of 11,540 ± 860 mg/L, 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) concentrations of 2,900 ± 200 mg/L and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations of 4,041 ± 59 mg/L, with low COD:N ratios (2.9) and BOD5:COD ratios (0.25). Synthetic wastewater, simulating the separated digestate liquid with similar COD and nitrogen concentrations but BOD5 of 11,500 ± 100 mg/L, was also treated using the IASBR technology. At a mean organic loading rate of 1.15 kg COD/(m3 d) and a nitrogen loading rate of 0.38 kg N/(m3 d), the COD removal efficiency was 89.8% in the IASBR (IASBR-1) treating digestate liquid and 99% in the IASBR (IASBR-2) treating synthetic wastewater. The IASBR-1 effluent COD was mainly due to inert organic matter and can be further reduced to less than 40 mg/L through coagulation. The partial nitrification efficiency of 71–79% was achieved in the two IASBRs and one cause for the stable long-term partial nitrification was the intermittent aeration strategy. Nitrogen removal efficiencies were 76.5 and 97% in IASBR-1 and IASBR-2, respectively. The high nitrogen removal efficiencies show that the IASBR technology is a promising technology for nitrogen removal from low COD:N ratio wastewaters. The nitrogen balance analysis shows that 59.4 and 74.3% of nitrogen removed was via heterotrophic denitrification in the non-aeration periods in IASBR-1 and IASBR-2, respectively.  相似文献

The performance of a full-scale (500 m3) sulfidogenic synthesis gas fed gas-lift reactor treating metal- and sulfate-rich wastewater was investigated over a period of 128 weeks. After startup, the reactor had a high methanogenic activity of 46 Nm3·h−1. Lowering the carbon dioxide feed rate during the first 6 weeks gradually lowered the methane production rate. Between weeks 8 and 93, less than 1% of the hydrogen supplied was used for methanogenesis. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis of polymerase chain reaction-amplified 16S rRNA gene fragments showed that the archaeal community decreased in diversity but did not disappear completely. After the carbon dioxide feed rate increased in week 88, the methane production rate also increased, confirming that methane production was carbon dioxide limited. Even though lowering the carbon dioxide feed appeared to affect part of the sulfate-reducing community, it did not prevent achieving the desired rates of sulfate reduction. The average sulfate conversion rate was 181 kg∙h−1 for the first 92 weeks. After 92 weeks, the sulfate input rate was increased and from week 94 to 128, the average weekly sulfate conversion rate was 295 kg·h−1 (SD ± 87). Even higher sulfate conversion rates of up to 400 kg·h−1 could be sustained for weeks 120–128. The long-term performance and stability together with the ability to control methanogenesis demonstrates that synthesis gas fed reactor can be used successfully at full scale to treat metal and sulfate-rich wastewater.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare the performance of anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) treating concentrated rubber latex wastewater under different pH adjustment substances and recycling ratios (R). Two ABRs, one received wastewater pretreated with NaOH and the other with ash, were operated at 35 degrees C under identical HRTs from 10 to 1.25d. Results show that both ABRs had highest COD and sulfate removal efficiencies at HRT 10d (averaged 82.71% and 96.16% of ABR-NaOH, and 80.77% and 96.60% of ABR-Ash, respectively), where majority of the influent COD and sulfate were removed by the first compartment of the ABR at all conditions tested. Increasing R (0, 0.3 and 0.5) raised the hydraulic loading on the system and resulted in a drop of organic removal efficiency and methane yield. Translocation of sulfate reducing bacteria and methanogens in the ABRs caused by increased organic loading and effluent recycle is discussed. The results show great potential of parawood ash as a pH adjustment substance for acidic wastewaters.  相似文献

The applicability of a fluidized-bed reactor (FBR)-based sulfate reducing bioprocess was investigated for the treatment of iron-containing (40-90 mg/L) acidic wastewater at low (8 degrees C) and high (65 degrees C) temperatures. The FBRs operated at low and high temperatures were inoculated with cultures of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) originally enriched from arctic and hot mining environments, respectively. Ethanol was supplemented as carbon and electron source for SRB. At 8 degrees C, ethanol oxidation and sulfate reduction rates increased steadily and reached 320 and 265 mg/L.day, respectively, after 1 month of operation. After this point, the rates did not change significantly during 130 days of operation. Despite the complete ethanol oxidation and iron precipitation, the average sulfate reduction efficiency was 35 +/- 4% between days 30 and 130 due to the accumulation of acetate. At 65 degrees C, a rapid startup was observed as 99.9, 46, and 29% ethanol, sulfate, acetate removals, in respective order, were observed after 6 days. The feed pH was decreased gradually from its initial value of 6 to around 3.7 during 100 days of operation. The wastewater pH of 4.3-4.4 was neutralized by the alkalinity produced in acetate oxidation and the average effluent pH was 7.8 +/- 0.8. As in the low temperature FBR, acetate accumulated. Hence, the oxidation of acetate is the rate-limiting step in the sulfidogenic ethanol oxidation by thermophilic and psychrotrophic SRB. The sulfate reduction rate is three times and acetate oxidation rate is four times higher at 65 degrees C than at 8 degrees C.  相似文献
