Conspicuous polymorphism in sexually selected traits is usually attributed to processes such as frequency‐dependent selection that can maintain genetic variation. Recent evidence indicates that dramatic variation of male coloration in guppies (Poecilia reticulata) is promoted by a form of frequency‐dependent selection in which males bearing rare or novel color patterns achieve higher mating success than males bearing common patterns. Active female preference for unfamiliar or rare color patterns has been implicated in generating this rare‐phenotype advantage, but the behavioral processes responsible for the preference remain unclear. To determine whether familiarity that is developed over a very short timescale can lead to a rare‐male mating advantage, we measured female response to courtship by males with color patterns that were the same as or different from that of the previous male to court. Females showed two types of short‐term preference variation in this experiment. On the first trial day, females shifted their preferences on a timescale of minutes, showing strong preference for males bearing a color pattern different from that of the immediately previous male to court. Twenty‐four hours later, females were less responsive to male courtship overall, and there was no difference in females’ response to different‐ and same‐morph males. Females also preferred males with more orange coloration on both trial days, but this color preference was independent of the preference for ‘different’ color patterns. These data suggest that the behavioral process underlying rare‐male advantage in guppies is that females prefer males bearing unfamiliar color patterns and that familiarity is determined over a very short timescale.  相似文献

Among the visual preferences that guide many everyday activities and decisions, from consumer choices to social judgment, preference for curved over sharp-angled contours is commonly thought to have played an adaptive role throughout human evolution, favoring the avoidance of potentially harmful objects. However, because nonhuman primates also exhibit preferences for certain visual qualities, it is conceivable that humans’ preference for curved contours is grounded on perceptual and cognitive mechanisms shared with extant nonhuman primate species. Here we aimed to determine whether nonhuman great apes and humans share a visual preference for curved over sharp-angled contours using a 2-alternative forced choice experimental paradigm under comparable conditions. Our results revealed that the human group and the great ape group indeed share a common preference for curved over sharp-angled contours, but that they differ in the manner and magnitude with which this preference is expressed behaviorally. These results suggest that humans’ visual preference for curved objects evolved from earlier primate species’ visual preferences, and that during this process it became stronger, but also more susceptible to the influence of higher cognitive processes and preference for other visual features.  相似文献

The ecological niche and mate preferences have independently been shown to be important for the process of speciation. Here, we articulate a novel mechanism by which ecological niche use and mate preference can be linked to promote speciation. The degree to which individual niches are narrow and clustered affects the strength of divergent natural selection and population splitting. Similarly, the degree to which individual mate preferences are narrow and clustered affects the strength of divergent sexual selection and assortative mating between diverging forms. This novel perspective is inspired by the literature on ecological niches; it also explores mate preferences and how they may contribute to speciation. Unlike much comparative work, we do not search for evolutionary patterns using proxies for adaptation and sexual selection, but rather we elucidate how ideas from niche theory relate to mate preference, and how this relationship can foster speciation. Recognizing that individual and population niches are conceptually and ecologically linked to individual and population mate preference functions will significantly increase our understanding of rapid evolutionary diversification in nature. It has potential to help solve the difficult challenge of testing the role of sexual selection in the speciation process. We also identify ecological factors that are likely to affect individual niche and individual mate preference in synergistic ways and as a consequence to promote speciation. The ecological niche an individual occupies can directly affect its mate preference. Clusters of individuals with narrow, differentiated niches are likely to have narrow, differentiated mate preference functions. Our approach integrates ecological and sexual selection research to further our understanding of diversification processes. Such integration may be necessary for progress because these processes seem inextricably linked in the natural world.  相似文献

Handedness in the mouse comprises 2 different behaviours. Some strains have a conditional behaviour, in that the mice learn a direction of hand preference in response to reaching for food, whereas other strains have an innate or constitutive behaviour, and prior experience has no measurable effect on their hand preference. However, hybrids from different strains have revealed both recessive and dominant forms of constitutive hand preference. We proposed that kinetic parameters of the learning process would resolve this genetic heterogeneity as well as the phenotypic complexity in the behaviour. We conducted and report here a detailed kinetic analysis of hand-preference training in the C57BL/6J strain. It revealed elements of the fundamental process of learning and long-term memory that underlies the behaviour by documenting consolidation of memory, blocking of this consolidation by an inhibitor of protein synthesis, retention of memory, and speed of learning in response to training reaches. Furthermore, speed of learning is clearly described by 2 parameters that we call "capacity" (or maximum amount of learned preference) and "ability" (or number of training reaches to achieve half the capacity). These 2 kinetic parameters can vary independently among genetically different strains that learn a preference, and we used them to demonstrate that the respective recessive and dominant forms of constitutive hand-preference may be the consequence of a true null or loss of function and a gain of function, possibly a memory regulator, in the learning process. The quantitative measures provide a sensitive and selective method to establish the fundamental learning process underlying mouse hand preference and to demonstrate empirically how genes and contextual environment shape its phenotypic complexity.  相似文献

Nile tilapia were raised from eggs to 2 months of age under a coloured light regime (violet, blue, green, yellow, and red) and then tested for colour preference in a multiple chamber maze with different colour options. Fish were observed individually during three days at 8, 11, 14, and 17 h, every 2 min for 20 min and the visit frequency in each compartment was analyzed. Young Nile tilapia kept under yellow and red light showed preference for yellow and red, respectively. Fish held under violet, blue, and green light did not show any colour preference or avoidance. These results imply that environmental colour affects colour preference of Nile tilapia, possibly due to light-dependent shift of visual pigments in the retina, indicating that colour preference is not an innate response. This conclusion reinforces the idea that environmental colour modulates fish physiological and behavioural processes.  相似文献

Prions are responsible for spongiform diseases such as scrapie and bovine spongiform encephalopathy. It is now generally accepted that the disease mechanism involves the conversion from the normal form, PrPC, to the pathogenic form, PrPSc, and that this isoform is infectious. In the case of scrapie, 15 different forms of the disease have been described and some of these different phenotypes can be conferred by infectious prions that are themselves encoded by normal genes. We propose here that a prion with an altered structure has a correspondingly altered preference for lipids; this altered preference creates a proteolipid domain containing different lipids and other factors such as chaperonins and enzymes responsible for post-translational modifications. Normal prions associated with this abnormal domain adopt the conformation dictated by its lipidic composition (and by the other factors present) and so acquire the lipidic preference of the original pathogenic prions. These transformed prions could then create new proteolipid domains. This process may be considered as semi-conservative replication in which prion and lipids are analogous to the Watson and Crick strands and the proteolipid domain to the double helix itself.  相似文献

Learning and memory systems are intimately involved in drug addiction. Previous studies suggest that galanin, a neuropeptide that binds G-protein coupled receptors, plays essential roles in the encoding of memory. In the present study, we tested the function of galnon, a galanin receptor 1 and 2 agonist, in reward-associated memory, using conditioned place preference (CPP), a widely used paradigm in drug-associated memory. Either before or following CPP-inducing morphine administration, galnon was injected at four different time points to test the effects of galanin activation on different reward-associated memory processes: 15 min before CPP training (acquisition), immediately after CPP training (consolidation), 15 min before the post-conditioning test (retrieval), and multiple injection after post-tests (reconsolidation and extinction). Galnon enhanced consolidation and extinction processes of morphine-induced CPP memory, but the compound had no effect on acquisition, retrieval, or reconsolidation processes. Our findings demonstrate that a galanin receptor 1 and 2 agonist, galnon, may be used as a viable compound to treat drug addiction by facilitating memory extinction process.  相似文献

Interacting in the peripersonal space requires coordinated arm and eye movements to visual targets in depth. In primates, the medial posterior parietal cortex (PPC) represents a crucial node in the process of visual-to-motor signal transformations. The medial PPC area V6A is a key region engaged in the control of these processes because it jointly processes visual information, eye position and arm movement related signals. However, to date, there is no evidence in the medial PPC of spatial encoding in three dimensions. Here, using single neuron recordings in behaving macaques, we studied the neural signals related to binocular eye position in a task that required the monkeys to perform saccades and fixate targets at different locations in peripersonal and extrapersonal space. A significant proportion of neurons were modulated by both gaze direction and depth, i.e., by the location of the foveated target in 3D space. The population activity of these neurons displayed a strong preference for peripersonal space in a time interval around the saccade that preceded fixation and during fixation as well. This preference for targets within reaching distance during both target capturing and fixation suggests that binocular eye position signals are implemented functionally in V6A to support its role in reaching and grasping.  相似文献

Although visual fixations are commonly used to index stimulus-driven or internally-determined preference, recent evidence suggests that visual fixations can also be a source of decisional bias that moves selection toward the fixated object. These contrasting results raise the question of whether visual fixations always index comparative processes during choice-based tasks, or whether they might better reflect internal preferences when the decision does not carry any economic or corporeal consequences. In two experiments, participants chose which of two objects were more aesthetically pleasing (Exp.1) or appeared more organic (Exp.2), and provided independent aesthetic ratings of the stimuli. Our results demonstrated that fixation parameters were a better index of choice in both decisional domains than of aesthetic preference. The data support models in which visual fixations are specifically related to the evolution of decision processes even when the decision has no tangible consequences.  相似文献

Many developing animals show an increasing preference for familiar companions and objects. They may also come to prefer things which are slightly different from the familiar. A model which shows how both processes can occur simultaneously is developed with particular reference to imprinting in birds. It shows how a biphasic curve would be obtained if preferences were measured in choice tests during the course of familiarization. The model predicts that shape of the preference curve will depend on the difference between the familiar and unfamiliar objects. It also predicts that the shape will be altered if inexperienced animals show a preference for one object over the other.  相似文献

Insect preference for symmetrical artificial flowers   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
A. P. Møller  G. Sorci 《Oecologia》1998,114(1):37-42
An insect preference for floral symmetry may be maintained because plants with symmetrical flowers, which are able to control developmental processes under given environmental conditions, also are able to provide more pollinator rewards than plants with asymmetrical flowers. Alternatively, insects may have an inherent preference for symmetrical structures and thereby impose selection for the maintenance of symmetry in flowers even in the absence of any pollinator rewards. We tested for an insect preference for radially symmetrical flowers by using horizontally placed units of four circular coloured flower models varying in size and symmetry. The shape and colour of the model flowers did not resemble any naturally occurring flowers in the environment. Insects and Hymenoptera, respectively (five species of Diptera and one species of Coleoptera) that visited the flower models clearly preferred symmetrical models over asymmetrical ones, and the ranking of visits to the models reflected a preference for large, symmetrical flowers. These results provide evidence for a preference for symmetrical flower models, even in the absence of pollinator rewards. Received: 11 September 1997 / Accepted: 2 November 1997  相似文献

During natal dispersal, young animals leave their natal area and search for a new area to live. In species in which individuals inhabit different types of habitat, experience with a natal habitat may increase the probability that a disperser will select the same type of habitat post-dispersal (natal habitat preference induction or NHPI). Despite considerable interest in the ecological and the evolutionary implications of NHPI, we lack empirical evidence that it occurs in nature. Here we show that dispersing brush mice (Peromyscus boylii) are more likely to search and settle within their natal habitat type than expected based on habitat availability. These results document the occurrence of NHPI in nature and highlight the relevance of experience-generated habitat preferences for ecological and evolutionary processes.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine the performance and host preference of Ascia monuste using kale (Brassica oleraceae, var. Acephala) and mustard (B. juncea). These plants differ significantly in water and nitrogen content, with mustard having larger amounts of water and kale larger amounts of nitrogen. The performance results confirmed that kale is a better food source than mustard for the species, even when eggs were collected on mustard leaves in the field. However, when eggs were collected on mustard, the kale nutritive value was lower than the nutritive value obtained when eggs were collected on kale leaves. Furthermore, the results of oviposition preference obtained in the field and in the laboratory have shown a preference for kale, indicating the presence of a positive correlation with performance. In contrast to the data about oviposition preference, there was no immature feeding preference. These results indicate that host selection occurs during the oviposition process. Furthermore, it is possible that the high abundance of kale cultivated in the region studied and the nutritional quality of this plant are two factors that influence the positive relationship between oviposition preference and performance for A. monuste.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Odour responses of parasitic insects, in search of their hosts, can change due to experience. Leptopilina heterotoma (Thomson) (Hymenoptera; Eucoilidae), a parasitic wasp of drosophilid larvae, is known to alter its preference for odours emanating from host food substrates through learning. These kinds of behavioural modifications in insects are assumed to be the result of complex processes in the brain. The results presented in this report, however, suggest that this learning-related behavioural variation is not restricted to brain processes but that it involves changes in sensitivity of olfactory receptor neurones.  相似文献

While it is well established that females prefer to mate with well‐ornamented males, the influence of perceptive and cognitive processes on the expression of female mate choice is still poorly known. It has been suggested that the female perception of a male's attractiveness is not absolute, but depends on the other males with which he is compared that have been previously encountered (comparative evaluation). We investigated whether mate preference in bearded reedlings (Panurus biarmicus) is dependent on or independent of social context in relation to two different traits: beard and tail lengths. Each female had a choice between two to three males with different modifications of beard and tail. For each female, three different experiments were conducted (one binary and two trinary tests). We found that when females are presented with options that vary antagonistically with respect to two ornaments (binary test), some individuals prefer one trait while others the other trait. This indicates that in our bearded reedlings population exists a mate preference polymorphisms. Moreover, we found that the presence of a third stimulus, irrespective of the initial preference, reduced the strength of the initial preference – what we can call a “preference dilution effect.” Our results suggest that the female's choice may be constrained by her cognitive abilities when she is simultaneously presented with several options varying for two uncorrelated traits.  相似文献

The host preference behaviour of the generalist aphid parasitoid Aphidius colemaniwas investigated using a Y-tube olfactometer. Female A. colemanishowed a preference for the host-plant complex on which they had been reared, even though the same aphid host was involved, demonstrating a host plant preference. This preference was not evident when the parasitoids were dissected from their mummies prior to adult emergence. Host plant preference exhibited during host selection appeared to be induced by chemical cues encountered on the mummy case at the time of emergence, but preferences could be changed by subsequent foraging experiences. It is concluded that plant chemical cues play a major role in determining initial preferences through a process of emergence conditioning but that learning processes, involving cues encountered during oviposition in or contact with the host, can modify these initial preferences.  相似文献

Food preferences displayed by foraging insects are important from a fundamental perspective and in pest control. We studied the preference of an invasive wasp, V. germanica, for protein foods in field conditions. Preferences were evaluated by placing baits in a paired design in different habitats and analyzing wasp visits, using a Bayesian approach to the Thurstone model. V. germanica workers display a clear rating of preferences, but were affected by the presence of competitors at the bait. These results contribute knowledge aimed at toxic baiting protocols for this wasp and suggest that food choice is a complex process subject to the influence of diverse factors. We emphasize the importance of on-site paired comparisons in preference studies to fully understand the drivers of food choice by insects.  相似文献

Diversity measures reflect different aspects of a community, which are determined by different ecological processes. However, information is still limited on the ecological processes that are represented by different measures of species diversity. In this study, the primary driving factors for richness and diversity indices were tested. The possible ecological processes represented by each index were analyzed. First, the type of ecological process that governed the phytoplankton community in the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau lakes, either deterministic or stochastic, was identified by Caswell's neutral model. The results indicate that a deterministic process governs the phytoplankton community. Second, the driving factors of richness and diversity indices were screened with mixed models. The results suggest that the variation of phytoplankton richness in different lakes or sites was primarily related to bottom-up factors. The variations in evenness and other measures based on the relative abundance were driven by both top-down and bottom-up factors, such as zooplankton biomass, and pH and mean light, respectively. Finally, although the different measures of diversity may respond to specific bottom-up or top-down processes, the responses to the two processes were not independent of each other. These findings will increase our understanding of the relationships between ecological processes and diversity measures for freshwater phytoplankton.  相似文献

Although the lungfish (Dipnoi) belong within the Osteichthyes, their dentitions are radically different from other osteichthyans. Lungfish dentitions also show a uniquely high structural disparity during the early evolution of the group, partly owing to the independent variation of odontogenic and odontoclastic processes that are tightly and stereotypically coordinated in other osteichthyans. We present a phylogenetic analysis of early lungfishes incorporating a novel approach to coding these process characters in preference to the resultant adult dental morphology. The results only partially resolve the interrelationships of Devonian dipnoans, but show that the widely discussed hypothesis of separate tooth-plated, dentine-plated, and denticulated lineages is unlikely to be true. The dipnoan status of Diabolepis is corroborated. Lungfish dentitions seem to have undergone extensive and nonparsimonious evolution during the early history of the group, but much of the resulting disparity can be explained by a modest number of evolutionary steps in the underlying developmental processes, those for dental formation (odontogenic) and those for the remodeling of dentine tissue (odontoclastic). Later in lungfish evolution, this disparity was lost as the group settled to a pattern of dental development that is just as stereotypic as, but completely different from, that of other osteichthyans.  相似文献

Previous studies with concurrent-chains procedures have shown that preference for a terminal-link signaling a higher reinforcement rate decreases as initial-link durations increase. Using a concurrent-chains procedure, the present experiment examined the effects of manipulating initial-link duration on preference and resistance to disruption with rats nose poking for different rates of food reinforcement in the terminal links. Consistent with previous findings, preference for a terminal link with a higher reinforcement rate decreased with longer initial links. Conversely, relative resistance to disruption in the terminal link with a higher reinforcement rate increased with longer initial links. These findings are counter to the prediction of behavioral momentum theory that preference and resistance to change should be positively related.  相似文献
