We investigated whether LH secretion, estrous behavior and fertility would differ between sexually inexperienced and experienced anestrous goats exposed to the males. Male goats were rendered sexually active during the reproductive rest season by exposure to 2.5 months of artificial long days. Two groups of anovulatory sexually inexperienced and sexually experienced does were exposed to males during 15 days (n = 20 per group). LH pulsatility was determined every 15 min from 4 h before to 8 h after introducing males (Day 0). Estrous behavior was recorded twice daily. Pregnancy rates were determined on Day 50. Fertility was determined at parturition. Male sexual behavior was registered on days 1 and 2 during 1 h. Before introducing the males, the number of LH pulses did not differ between groups. After introduction of the males, all females increased their LH pulsatility, but the number of pulses did not differ between sexually inexperienced and experienced goats. The proportion of females displaying estrous behavior with a high pregnancy rate and fertility did not differ between inexperienced and experienced goats. The sexual behavior of the males did not differ significantly between those interacting with sexually inexperienced or experienced goats. We conclude that goats can show substantial endocrine and reproductive responses to males, even in the absence of previous sexual experience, when sexually active bucks are used.  相似文献

Epididymal sperm quantity and quality were examined throughout the reproductive lifespan of sexually experienced and inexperienced rats. Males were housed with gonadally intact or ovariectomized females for 2 weeks to 1 year, and epididymides were analysed 1 week to 9 months after the females were removed. Results for the virgin males suggest a peak in sperm numbers at 6 months of age followed by a gradual decline and then notable decrements in sperm numbers and motility by 24 months of age. The same general pattern emerged for sexually experienced males, with two exceptions. There was a chronic increase of sperm numbers relative to those of virgin males at every age examined, and the decline in spermatozoa with ageing was slowed by previous sexual contact. The implications of these data for the ontogeny of fertility are not readily apparent because the epididymis remained reproductively functional throughout the lifespan. We do, however, suggest that epididymides are sensitive to experiential and hormonal changes during adulthood and, most important, the effects of these changes are maintained chronically and into old age.  相似文献

Plasma levels of corticosterone (C) and testosterone (T) increase after sexual activity in males of several species. However, the physiological significance of these increases has not been elucidated. In the present study, hormonal response to different conditions linked to sexual activity was assessed. In the first experiment, plasma levels of C and T were assessed both in sexually experienced and naive male rats after the following conditions: (A) control group, without sexual stimulation; (B) males exposed to ovariectomized females; (C) males exposed to intact, non-receptive females; (D) males exposed to receptive females with the vagina obstructed, to avoid intromission; (E) males exposed to receptive females: but separated by a grid that prevents physical contact; (F) males exposed to receptive females during 30 min. In a second experiment, experienced male rats were allowed to repeatedly copulate until reaching the criteria for sexual exhaustion, and 24 h later, they were allowed to copulate. Once sexually related conditions ended, males were killed and their blood was obtained. C and T plasma levels were assessed by HPLC with ultraviolet (UV) detection. Results indicate that T did not increase significantly in naive male in any sexual condition, while in the experienced males, significant increases were observed with the mere presence of a receptive female and also after ejaculation. These increases were significantly larger in experienced males. On the other hand, C also increased in all sexual conditions, both in experienced and naive rats; however, the increase observed was larger in experienced males. Regarding sexual satiety, both C and T increased after copulating ad libitum to satiety. T increased almost three-fold compared to control, while C increased two-fold. No significant changes were observed in either one of the steroids 24 h after sexual exhaustion, even though males remained with a receptive female during an hour. These results show that sexual experience has an important influence on the hormonal response to sexual activity. C rises could be directly related to sexual arousal involved in the different sexual conditions, while T rises seem to have a direct relationship with both the motivation and execution aspects of masculine sexual behavior.  相似文献

1. We examined whether oxytocin (OT) neurons in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) were activated by estrus female odor and sexual contact in sexually naïve and experienced Long-Evans rats. 2. Male rats were not presented to anesthetized estrus females (control) or presented to the females without (exposure to the female odor without sexual contact) or with direct contact (exposure to the female odor with sexual contact). 3. Exposure to the female odor with sexual contact significantly increased OT neurons with Fos-ir in both males. Exposure to the female odor without contact increased OT neurons with Fos-immunoreactive cells (Fos-ir) in sexually experienced males but not in naïve males, suggesting that the female odor without sexual contact activated the oxytocinergic neuronal system in the PVN in the experienced males. 4. Therefore, exposure to the estrus female odor itself may exert different effects on sexually naïve and experienced males.  相似文献

1.  Mating behaviour in Daphnia appears to rely on random contact between males and sexual females rather than diffusible pheromones. Males may be able to discriminate sexually receptive females from females in other developmental stages and increase their mating efficiency. Males may also use chemical signals to avoid mating with females from the same clone and avoid the severe inbreeding depression that has been documented for intraclonal mating. The present study used experiments to test for the avoidance of intraclonal mating and assess male mating efficiency in D. pulex .
2.  Three clones were examined for the avoidance of intraclonal mating by providing males with an opportunity to mate with females of the same or two different clones. The proportion of intraclonal matings did not differ from the proportion of interclonal matings, suggesting that D. pulex males do not use kin discrimination to avoid mating with females from the same clone.
3.  The proportion of mated females decreased with increasing numbers and density of sexual females when exposed to a single male. This observation suggests that a male spends more time pursuing and copulating with sexually receptive females than non-receptive females and there is insufficient time to mate with all sexual females. The decrease in proportion of females mated could also be the result of sperm depletion in the male. Sperm depletion is unlikely to occur in nature because sexually receptive females are much rarer than in the experimental conditions.  相似文献

Male wolf spiders are capable of recognising sexual signals associated with female silk threads. In the wolf spider Schizocosa malitiosa variations in female receptivity have been studied, but changes in female silk attractiveness remain unknown. We analysed the sexual responses of adult males (leg shaking, papal drumming and searching) exposed to silk cues from subadult, virgin and mated females of different ages, and females that were or were not carrying an egg-sac. Penultimate and recently moulted adult females elicited low levels of male sexual behaviour, while those of virgin females (21–40 days old) were the most attractive. Silk threads slowly became less attractive after mating. Cues from females carrying an egg-sac as well as females in the inter egg-sac period were fairly attractive. The low attractiveness of recently moulted females disagrees with their high sexual receptivity. In contrast, females continued to elicit strong male responses during a 10-day period after mating, despite the fact that they immediately become sexually reluctant, suggesting strong selection for male searching ability. Low attractiveness during the egg-carrying period could reflect the fact that females do not require any further sperm. Concordances and discordances between attractiveness and sexual receptivity suggest that they respond to different physiological mechanisms.  相似文献

The mating of the Neotropical lycosid Schizocosa malitiosa is long and complex, involving intense genital stimulation and copulatory courtship. This suggests functions other than just insemination. Previous data indicated that mated females of this species are less sexually receptive than virgins. We hypothesise that copulatory characteristics presented by males during prolonged copulations could be responsible for subsequent female sexual reluctance, and may be selected by cryptic female choice. Our objective was to examine the influence of copulatory behaviour on subsequent female sexual receptivity in S. malitiosa, isolating it from the effects of sperm transfer per se. For this purpose, we obtained males without sperm in their copulatory organs (palpal bulbs), and prevented them from charging their palps by sealing their genital pores immediately after their last moult (treated males). Virgin females were separated into three groups: (i) females exposed once to normal males, (ii) females exposed twice to normal males, and (iii) females exposed first to treated and second to normal males. The results showed that, 3 d after their first mating, females first mated with untreated males were frequently refractory to remating, whereas all those first mated with treated males were receptive. Copulations performed by treated males showed some differences from those performed by normal males, but maintained the basic behavioural pattern with abundant sexual stimulation. The presence of sperm fluids in the female receptacles appears to be the most likely factor generating female remating reluctance. Males may manipulate female responses using receptivity inhibiting substances in their sperm, like those described for insects. Females would first ensure sperm supply, becoming more choosy afterwards. All females, whether mated once or twice, generated similar numbers of progeny, indicating no relationship between number of matings and number of spiderlings.  相似文献

Young sexually naive (3-4 months) and sexually experienced (2-3 years) male rabbits were subjected to various sexual stimulation procedures. Blood samples were taken just before and 30 min after mounting (unreceptive females) or coitus (receptive females). Testosterone and luteinizing hormone were assayed using specific radioimmunoassays. Sexual stimulation did not affect postcoital testosterone and LH levels in naive and experienced males while in females LH levels were significantly increased. We may conclude that the postcoital neuroendocrine reflex which causes a massive release of pituitary LH in female rabbit does not exist in males.  相似文献

Copulation with intromission or manual vaginocervical stimulation (VCS) shortens the duration that intact female rats maintain lordosis responding during estrus. The present study examined whether VCS could shorten the duration of both appetitive and consummatory measures of female sexual behavior, and whether these effects occur differentially in time and across different hormone priming intervals. Ovariectomized, sexually experienced female rats were administered subcutaneous injections of estradiol benzoate 48 h and progesterone 4 h, before receiving 50 manual VCSs with a lubricated glass rod distributed over 1 h. Control females received sham VCSs distributed over the same time. The females were then tested for sexual behavior in bilevel chambers with two sexually vigorous males (to one ejaculatory series or 10 min with each male, separated by 5 min) 12, 16, and 20 h after VCS. Prior to the final hormone treatment, different groups of females had been given the same hormone treatment either 28, 14, 7, or 4 days before. In females tested at 28- and 14-day hormone intervals, VCS induced both active and passive rejection responses at 12, 16, and 20 h. In contrast, females that received sham VCS displayed relatively normal sexual behavior at 12 h, although by 16 and 20 h these females displayed active and passive rejection. Females tested at 7- or 4-day intervals displayed normal levels of lordosis at all testing times, regardless of VCS treatment. These data indicate that VCS facilitates rejection responses that precede the decrease in lordosis responsiveness. However, the effects of VCS are dependent on the frequency of hormone priming, suggesting that hormone treatment may block some of the long-term inhibitory effects of VCS on female sexual behavior.  相似文献

The process of sexual maturation was studied in the ant Iridomyrmex humilis. Spermatogenesis starts during the pupal stage and sperm is transferred to the seminal vesicles during the first four days after emergence. The testes start to degenerate early in the pupal stage and totally shrivel up during the first days after emergence. Males therefore have a fixed amount of sperm. Both males and females reach sexual maturity only 2–3 days after emergence; some of them mate as early as the first day after emergence. Overall, it appears that the length of time needed to reach sexual maturity in ants is highly correlated with the mode of colony founding. The maturation period is much longer in those species in which young queens initiate colonies without the help of workers (independent founding) than in those where young queens need the help of workers (dependent founding). This is probably associated with the fact that independent founding queens require large amounts of energy reserves in order to found colonies; these energy reserves are accumulated after emergence. In contrast, dependent founding queens do not accumulate as many energy reserves and are therefore sexually receptive at a younger age.  相似文献

Methoprene (a mimic of juvenile hormone) treatment can reduce the time required for sexual maturation in Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) males under laboratory conditions, supporting its use as a treatment for sterile males within the context of the sterile insect technique (SIT). We evaluated sexual behaviour, mating competitiveness of methoprene-treated males, and female readiness to mate after methoprene-treatment in field cages. The study involved two strains of A. fraterculus from Argentina and Peru, which show several polymorphisms in relation to their sexual behaviour. We also analyzed whether methoprene treatment affected male and/or female behaviour in the same way in these two strains. Methoprene-treated males were equally competitive with untreated mature males, and became sexually competitive 6 days after emergence (3–4 days earlier than untreated males). In contrast, methoprene did not induce sexual maturation in females or, at least, it did not induce a higher rate of mating in 7-day-old females. These results were observed both for the Argentina and the Peru strains. Altogether, our results indicate that methoprene treatment produces sexually competitive males in field cages. In the absence of a genetic sexing system, and when sterile males and females of A. fraterculus are released simultaneously, the fact that females do not respond as do males to the methoprene treatment acts as a physiological sexing effect. Therefore, in the presence of mainly sexually immature sterile females, released sexually mature sterile males would have to disperse in search of wild fertile females, thereby greatly reducing matings among the released sterile insects and thus enhancing sterile insect technique efficiency.  相似文献

Male age and sexual experience are important condition parameters that can influence mate choice and female fitness, yet they are seldom studied simultaneously. Here, we investigated the effect of male age and previous sexual experience on mating success and female fitness in the Mexican fruit fly, Anastrepha ludens (Diptera: Tephritidae). Males were either young or old, sexually experienced or naïve. Older and sexually experienced males obtained more copulations. However, females did not receive benefits in terms of lifetime fecundity, fertility, or longevity from mating with these males. Results suggest that males become more competitive as they age and gain sexual experience and may be able to maintain a high quality ejaculate compared to young males. Older experienced males may be manipulating females into preferentially mating with them at no benefit to females. Alternatively, females may prefer mating with older more experienced males and possibly receive other indirect benefits, but this remains to be tested.  相似文献

While male mate choice behaviour has been reported in many taxa, little is known about its plasticity and evolutionary consequences. In the damselfly Ischnura senegalensis, females exhibit colour dimorphism (gynomorph and andromorph). The body colour of gynomorphs changed ontogenetically in accordance with sexual maturation, while little change occurred in andromorphs. To test the male mate choice between sexually immature and mature females of both morphs, binary choice experiments were conducted. Virgin males that were reared separately from females after emergence did not show significant preference between sexually immature and mature females for both morphs, indicating that virgin males were unable to discriminate female reproductive status. On the other hand, males that had experienced copulation with gynomorphs preferred sexually mature gynomorphs to sexually immature ones. However, males that had experienced copulation with andromorphs could not discriminate between sexually immature and mature andromorphs, probably due to the absence of significant ontogenetic change in their thoracic colour. Therefore, female body colour is an important cue for males in discriminating between sexual maturation stages. Learned mate discrimination depending on copulation experience might help males to detect potential mates effectively and avoid sexually unreceptive immature female. We finally discuss the adaptive significance of the ontogenetic colour change in females.  相似文献

Abstract. The mating system of Prokelisia dolus Wilson (Homoptera: Delphacidae) was characterized by determining: if males and females multiply mate; when transitions occur in female sexual receptivity, what triggers sexual refractoriness; and what behaviours characterize unreceptive virgins, receptive virgins, and unreceptive mated females. Males copulated with up to six females in less than 1 h, but completely inseminate, on average, only the first four females. Females rarely mated more than once, unless males were depleted of sperm due to previous copulations or if copulation was interrupted (if duration was<2 min). Male and female calling was associated (100% and 91%, respectively) with sexual receptivity and resultant matings. The transition from unreceptive virgin to receptive (calling) mature virgin occurred 48 h posteclosion, and all were mated by day 4. Females that were sexually immature and those completely inseminated did not call. Rejection of males by females included walking away from approaching males (65%), female kicking (7%), and abdominal lifting (5%). Rejection of males was observed by immature, mature and calling, and mated females. Sexual refractoriness was not triggered by acoustic and visual stimuli or mechanical stimulation of genitalia. Refractoriness was also not triggered by reception of small quantities of sperm because some females laid a few viable eggs yet calling was not terminated. Sexual refractoriness was activated by a substance in the ejaculate as demonstrated by injection into the haemocoel of male accessory glands or testes and homogenates of seminal vesicles. This is the first study that documents the role of male ejaculate in inhibiting female sexual receptivity in Hemiptera (Homoptera).  相似文献

Trade-offs between investment into male sexual traits and immune function provide the foundation for some of the most prominent models of sexual selection. Post-copulatory sexual selection on the male ejaculate is intense, and therefore trade-offs should occur between investment into the ejaculate and the immune system. Examples of such trade-offs exist, including that between sperm quality and immunity in the Australian cricket, Teleogryllus oceanicus. Here, we explore the dynamics of this trade-off, examining the effects that increased levels of sexual interaction have on the viability of a male's sperm across time, and the concomitant effects on immune function. Males were assigned to a treatment, whereby they cohabited with females that were sexually immature, sexually mature but incapable of copulation, or sexually mature and capable of copulation. Sperm viability of each male was then assessed at two time points: six and 13 days into the treatment, and immune function at day 13. Sperm viability decreased across the time points, but only for males exposed to treatment classes involving sexually mature females. This decrease was similar in magnitude across both sexually mature classes, indicating that costs to the expression of high sperm viability are incurred largely through levels of pre-copulatory investment. Males exposed to immature females produced sperm of low viability at both time points. Although we confirmed a weak negative association between sperm viability and lytic activity (a measure of immune response to bacterial infection) at day 13, this relationship was not altered across the mating treatment. Our results highlight that sperm viability is a labile trait, costly to produce, and subject to strategic allocation in these crickets.  相似文献

Darwin first identified female choice and male—male competitionas forms of sexual selection resulting in the evolution of conspicuoussexual dimorphism, but it has proven challenging to separatetheir effects. Their effects on sexual selection become evenmore complicated when sperm competition occurs because spermprecedence may be either a form of cryptic female choice ora form of male—male competition. We examined the effectsof tail height on male—male competition and female choiceusing the sexually dimorphic red-spotted newt (Notophthalmusviridescens viridescens). Experiment 1 examined whether maletail height influenced male mating success. Males with deeptails were more successful at mating with females than thosewith shallow tails. Successful, deep-tailed males also were bigger(snout-vent length; SVL) than unsuccessful, shallow-tailed males, but they did not vary in tail length or body condition. Of these, only tail height and tail length are sexually dimorphic traits.Experiment 2 tested the hypothesis that the differential successof males with deeper tails was due to female choice by examiningboth simultaneous female preference for association and sequentialfemale choice. We found no evidence of female choice. When maleswere not competing to mate with females, tail height did notinfluence male mating success. Successful males did not havedifferent SVL and tail lengths than unsuccessful males. Thus, tail height in male red-spotted newts appears to be an intrasexuallyselected secondary sexual characteristic. Experiment 3 usedpaternity exclusion analyses based on molecular genetic markersto examine the effect of sperm precedence on sperm competitionin doubly-mated females. Sperm precedence likely does not havea pervasive and consistent effect on fertilization success becausewe found evidence of first, last, and mixed sperm usage.  相似文献

Twenty steppe polecats were divided into 2 groups, each consisting of 4 males and 6 females, and subjected to either a natural photoperiod (controls) or alternating periods of short (8 h light/16 hr dark for 8-9 weeks) and long days (16 h light/8 h dark for 16-20 weeks). The experimental photoperiod significantly accelerated sexual maturation in both sexes, with males developing maximal testis size within 57 days and females breeding after an average of 52 days exposure to 16L/8D. Males in the experimental group completed 2 1/2 testicular cycles and participated in mating during 3 successive breeding seasons during the 18 month period whereas males in the control group completed a single testicular cycle and only had an opportunity to mate during a single breeding season. Females in the experimental group produced 3 litters whereas females in the control group only gave birth to a single litter. Litter size averaged 6.9 +/- 2.0 (n = 23) and did not significantly differ with age, parity, or treatment. Pseudopregnant females returned to estrus within 12 days after the expected date of parturition, were bred, and gave birth to kits. Polecats which were subjected to the experimental photoperiods completed more molting cycles and underwent more photoperiod-induced changes in body weight than those in the control group. Death or removal of kits within 8 days after birth resulted in 12/12 females returning to estrus within 6-26 days. Eleven of these females were remated and gave birth to kits. Eight domestic ferrets readily accepted neonatal polecat kits and 5 successfully reared kits, although kit survival was quite poor.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Mounting behavior in the female rat has been studied extensively in same-sex interactions, but not in the heterosexual dyad. The present study examined the display of female mounting of castrated noncopulating male rats (FMM). Ovariectomized (OVX) sexually naive female rats (N = 80) were given either estrogen (E) + progesterone (P), E + oil (O), P + O, or O + O treatment for five tests with castrated male rats. FMMs were observed in both the E + P and E + O females. The influence of the ovarian cycle on FMM was also investigated. Vaginal smears from sexually naive females (N = 16) were taken daily for 12 days immediately after testing with castrated males. FMM frequency was greatest during Proestrus. Finally, OVX females (N = 30) treated with E + P were given either 0, 1, 10 multi-ejaculatory heterosexual experiences with intact, sexually experienced males, prior to tests with intact, copulating or castrated, noncopulating males for five tests. Sexually naive females displayed a greater number of mounts relative to the sexually experienced females when tested with castrated, noncopulating males. In contrast, very few FMMs were observed in females of any group tested with intact, copulating males. These data suggest that FMM occurs naturally in rats as a "super-solicitational" behavior that is modified by hormone treatment and prior heterosexual experience.  相似文献

The chromosome complement was studied in first-cleavage metaphases of mouse zygotes resulting from sperm aged in the male physiologically, after sexual rest. Females were inseminated by control males mating at 3-day intervals while experimentals mated to males that had had a sexual rest of 14 or more days. A total of 1954 eggs were collected 33–35 h post-HCG from 101 superovulated females mated to 42 controls and 43 experimental males. The fertilization rate was similar in both groups, being 84% and 85%, respectively. G-banded or Q-banded chromosomes were analyzed in 301 (68.3%) controls and 392 (49%) experimental first-cleavage metaphases. The overall rate of chromosome anomalies in controls was 4.45% as compared to 10.94% in experimentals, a highly significant difference. In the experimental group compared to controls, the frequency of trisomy, triploidy, structural rearrangements, and tetraploidy increased from 3.9% to 6.9%, 0% to 1.6%, 0.8% to 2.8%, and 0% to 1.3%, respectively. The genomic source of origin of the abnormalities was determined on the basis of differential condensation of the genomes. In the experimentals, grossly unbalanced sperm (diploids, disomics, double disomics, and those with large fragments) fertilized significantly more oocytes compared to controls. Our results implicate an advantage either in numbers or fertilizing capability for chromosomally abnormal sperm in a physiologically aged population.  相似文献
