Dental microwear of ten wild-shot chacma baboons (Papio urinus) form Northwest and Northern Privinces, South Africa was examined by scanning electron microscopy. All specimens were collected during the dry season, during which these primates exploit hypogeous (underground) food items, including tubers and corms. The microwear fabric of thisP. ursinus sample is characterized by high pitting frequencies and large microwear features. It differs significantly from those displayed by other terrestrially foraging papionins of the genusTheropithecus. Exogenous grit is hypothesized to be largely responsible for the observedP. ursinus wear pattern, which resembles the microwear profiles of durophagous primates. It is suggested that large microwear features and a high incidence of enamel pitting, which are generally held to represent a microwear “signature” of durophagy, may not always be indicative of hard-object feeding in anthropoid primates. 相似文献

Twelve wild born mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx), six males, six females, were studied in a 1.4-ha forest enclosure in Gabon Africa. Seventy-six percent of their food was
obtained from the ground (45% unidentified food objects foraged from the leaf litter, 21% from ground plants, and 10% animal
matter) while 23% was taken from arboreal sources (10% from trees, 10% from vines, and 3% from shrubs). Plant parts eaten
include seeds, roots, fruits, stem pith, apical branch ends, mature and immature leaves, nuts, buds, blossoms, and bark. There
were significant dietary differences between sexes. There were also individual dietary differences both in preferred foods
and arboreal vs terrestrial foraging locations. At nearly all times of the day at least 70% of the study group was on the
ground. Sixty-four percent of their time was spent feeding, with females spending more time feeding than males. High rates
of feeding were seen throughout the day, with high individual variances, which is explained by individual food preferences
and a temporal partitioning of the food resources. These findings are compared to those observed in wild mandrills and other

Synopsis The feeding ecology of three characids (A. fasciatus, A. bimaculatus and A. schubarti) was studied monthly during 1988 in Lake Inferñao, a major floodplain lake of the Mogi-Guaçú River in the State of São Paulo. River flooding directly influenced the diet of the omnivorous A. bimaculatus and A. fasciatus which responded to maximum inundation (March) by consuming predominantly allochthonous insects. In contrast, A. schubarti was less influenced by the river flood cycle on qualitative changes in diet and relied basically on aquatic macrophytes and periphytic algae. The importance of zooplankton in the diet of the three species was low, and may be attributed to its low density in the water column (< 1 ind l–1). Ontogenetic diet changes were evident for the three species. For A. fasciatus and A. bimaculatus the importance of zooplankton was high at the early stages, decreasing with size. A. schubarti at younger stages consumed diversified items which gradually decreased quantitatively up to the size class of 65 mm; from this size onwards, the diet became restricted to the consumption of periphytic algae and macrophytes. 相似文献

Summary Like many polyphagous herbivores, individuals of Sarasinula plebeia (Fischer) (Soleolifera: Veronicellidae) consume a variety of plant species that may differ in nutritional content. In this study we determined the ability of these slugs to compensate for such variation in diet composition. Dilution with water of an agar-based diet containing commercial guinea pig food or carrot root to obtain dry weights (dw) of 90, 70, 40 and 10% of diet fresh weight (fw), caused immature slugs to consume increasingly more fresh weight of food [as much as 4.7-(guinea pig) to 6.1-fold (carrot) more]. Dry weight consumption and body mass-relative dry weight consumption rate also increased at intermediate dilutions, buth with further dilution, dry weight intake declined despite the greater fresh weight consumption. At each dilution level, slugs fed the guinea pig diet consumed from ca. 5-to 6.4-fold more fresh weight than the carrotfed slugs. The former grew substantially, with their final biomass and body mass-relative growth rate varying curvilinearly with diet % dw. If these slugs had not fed more but instead maintained the same fresh weight consumption as slugs in the 90% dw tretments, without altering food utilization efficiencies, then their biomass gain in the 70, 40 and 10% dw treatments would have been only about 62, 43, and 21%, respectively, of the values actually attained. In contrast, carrot-fed slugs did not grow and were only able to maintain their initial biomass. For each diet, slug tissue water (% fw) was highest in the most diluted treatment but did not differ significantly among the other dilution levels. Approximate digestibility of the carrot diet was highest at intermediate dilution levels (ca. 75% of ingested food was digested and absorbed); for the guinea pig diet, this efficiency declined linearly from about 66% to 59% with increased dilution. For slugs that grew (i.e., those fed the guinea pig diet), effeciences of converting digested (29–52%) and ingested (18–33%) food to dry biomass were both curvilinearly related to diet % dw. Thus, S. plebeia, like many other herbivores, has the capacity to increase food consumption substantially inresponse to reduced dietary nutrient level, allowing the slugs to cope with variable nutrient content in their food plants. 相似文献

20 0 3年 8~ 10月 ,用固定观察和扫描取样法对四川石渠县藏原羚 (Procaprapicticaudata)的取食行为进行了研究。设置 4 0个 2 0m× 2 0m的样地 ,测量藏原羚的 13个取食生境因子。利用单个样本的Kolmogorov Smirnovtest检验 ,呈正态分布的用参数检验 ,否则用非参数检验。结果显示 :(1)藏原羚主要以集群的形式取食 ,集群大小为 6 8头 (n =4 9) ,最大群为 34头 ;雄性群具有小集群的倾向 (即除存在独雄外 ,2~ 3头一群的群体数占 33 33% ,n =9) ,母子群也以小集群为主 ,两母子为一群的集群占 5 3% (n =15 ) ,但是没有发现<4头的雌性群。 (2 )藏原羚的取食时间以晨昏为主 ,取食高峰在早晨 (8:0 0~ 9:0 0 )和傍晚 (17:0 0~ 18:0 0 ) ,两者各占该时间段全部活动的 5 4 %以上。 (3)藏原羚更喜欢选择蒿草属、火绒草属和棘豆属中数种营养高的植物为食 ,比例高达 80 %以上。 (4) 13个生境因子的聚类和主成分分析表明 :前 4个主成分累积贡献率达到 71% ,能够反映藏原羚主要的取食生境特征 ;影响藏原羚取食生境选择的主要因子分为植物营养度 (特定的植被类型和中等的植被高度 )、干扰度 (隐蔽条件好、人为和动物干扰小 )、水源 (离水源较近和避风性良好 )3个方面。 相似文献

The identification of migration dates and wintering zones for migratory birds are key elements for the understanding of the Afro-Palearctic migration system. From 2015 to 2022, a large-scale survey of Turtle Doves Streptopelia turtur, a vulnerable species, was established in Northwest Africa, including Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. We monitored migration dates and wintering individuals using the line-transect method. We found that Turtle Doves arrived in the last week of March and left the North African region in mid-October. Compared with Morocco, Doves arrived significantly earlier in Algeria and Tunisia. Moreover, Doves were discovered wintering on nine Northwest African sites, from October to February, where individuals feed in groups. We found that the occurrence probability of wintering Turtle Doves decreased significantly with increasing temperature and rainfall. Birds wintered most often close to wetlands since the overwintering probability decreased with the increasing distance from the recording area to the nearest water body. These are the first and only detailed findings on the migration phenology of the globally vulnerable Turtle Dove in north western Africa. 相似文献

The evolutionary success of macrostomatan (enlarged-gape) snakes has been attributed to their ability to consume large prey, in turn made possible by their highly kinetic skulls. However, prey can be “large” in several ways, and we have little insight into which aspects of prey size and shape affect skull function during feeding. We used X-ray videos of broad-banded water snakes (Nerodia fasciata) feeding on both frogs and fish to quantify movements of the jaw elements during prey transport, and of the anterior vertebral column during post-cranial swallowing. In a sample of additional individuals feeding on both frogs and fish, we measured the time and the number of jaw protractions needed to transport prey through the buccal cavity. Prey type (fish vs. frog) did not influence transport kinematics, but did influence transport performance. Furthermore, wider and taller prey induced greater movements of most cranial elements, but wider prey were transported with significantly less anterior vertebral bending. In the performance trials, heavier, shorter, and wider prey took significantly more time and a greater number of jaw protractions to ingest. Thus, the functional challenges involved in prey transport depend not only upon prey mass, but also prey type (fish vs. frog) and prey shape (relative height, width and length), suggesting that from the perspective of a gape-limited predator, the difficulty of prey ingestion depends upon multiple aspects of prey size. 相似文献

Synopsis On a rocky shore of Lake Tanganyika aufwuchs-eating is practiced by 18 fish species: 17 cichlids and 1 cyprinid. The majority takes mostly either filamentous or unicellular algae.Tropheus moorei and its taxonomically related species most closely resemble one another in diet among the species taking mostly filamentous algae, and thePetrochromis species do so among the species taking mostly unicellular algae.Petrochromis polyodon andT. moorei severely interfere with the feeding activities of related species. These two dominant species share both intensive grazing sites and temporal grazing patterns, and there seems to be a symbiotic relationship between them. Symbiotic relationships are also seen in seven cases of associated feeding by carnivorous fishes. Differences in diet or feeding behavior are found between these symbionts. Small but clear differences are found betweenP. polyodon andT. moorei and between the associating and the carnivorous host fishes in the four cases of associated feeding. A herd of 28–33 Japanese Black cows (Bos taurus) were allowed to graze on an experimental plot comprising monoculture swards of centipedegrass (Eremochloa ophiuroides) and bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) (0.39 and 0.61 ha, respectively) for 3–5 days each month (from 0850 to 1600 hours) between May (late spring) and October
(mid-autumn). On a monthly basis, the animals showed an increasing trend to select centipedegrass in preference to bahiagrass
as the relative crude protein (CP) concentration of the former increased relative to the latter. On a daily basis, the animals
showed a decreased selectivity for centipedegrass with the progression of grazing days, as centipedegrass sward lost both
quantity and quality faster than bahiagrass sward under higher degrees of defoliation. Animals maintained similar bite rates
on the two swards by modifying feeding station behavior as soon as they switched between the swards, i.e., they increased
the number of bites per feeding station and decreased the number of feeding stations selected per unit grazing time soon after
switching to centipedegrass, with the reverse process occurring soon after the switch to bahiagrass. The results show CP concentration
to be a partial forage factor influencing animals’ choice between tropical grasses growing as patches. The results also demonstrate
that animals have an ability to adapt their foraging behavior flexibly and rapidly to varying types of vegetation. 相似文献

Fossorial lizards differ in morphology from their surface-dwelling relatives. The Australian sphenomorphine skink genus Ctenotus consists of surface-dwelling species, and is closely related to the genus Lerista, which includes both surface-dwelling and fossorial species. Sand-swimming represents the derived condition and has evolved independently in several lineages of Lerista. The heads of lizards in the two genera differ in shape (blunt snout for Ctenotus versus wedge-shaped for Lerista) and in length relative to the body (approximately 20% of snout-vent length for Ctenotus versus 12% for sand-swimming Lerista). Do these specializations affect the sizes or types of prey that can be consumed by Lerista? We compared prey-handling by Ctenotus and Lerista to correlate morphological differences with differences in prey-handling ability, and to distinguish the effects of snout shape and head length. Feeding trials included three categories of insect prey that the lizards normally eat: soft-bodied larvae (Lepidoptera), hard-bodied larvae (Coleoptera), and roaches (Blatoidea). In comparisons based on the mass of a prey item relative to the mass of a lizard, Lerista had longer handling times for all prey categories and were limited to smaller prey than were Ctenotus. However, when comparisons were based on the length of prey relative to the length of a lizard's head, Lerista ate some elongate prey as fast or faster than did Ctenotus, and both genera successfully swallowed prey more than twice the length of their own head. Thus, the differences in prey-handling performance of Ctenotus and Lerista probably result from the fact that Lerista have a relatively shorter head than Ctenotus. All Lerista species, surface-dwelling and fossorial, have short heads compared to primitive sphenomorphine lizards. Fossorial species of Lerista have elongate trunks, and consequently their heads are shorter in proportion to trunk length than those of surface-dwelling Lerista. However, most fossorial species of Lerista are longer and heavier than any of their surface-dwelling congeners, and the heads of these fossorial species are large relative to the prey they encounter. Feeding ecology of any species can help us to understand its natural history, ecological requirements and approaches involved in searching for food. Feeding ecology and sexual dimorphism in the horned viper, Cerastes cerastes gasperetti collected from the Al-Thumama area, central region of Saudi Arabia was described. The gut content of Cerastes c. gasperetti mainly consisted of rodents (70%) in addition to arthropods (15%) and lizards (10%). Least sexual size dimorphism was noticed in the species in terms of total length. Significant difference was noticed between males and females in terms of two correlation points vent tail length (VT) and total length (TL) with the males attaining a larger size (P < 0.05). The mean number of the dorsal body scales, ventrals and subcaudals for the females was 102, 156 and 33 scales respectively which were significantly different from respective ones in males 95, 160 and 38 scales. There are many aspects of the feeding of this snake that remain unknown and further studies are clearly needed. 相似文献

Food habits of the American mink Mustela vison were studied based on the analysis of 2364 scat samples, collected at three lakes in Northeastern Poland. The mink preyed on a wide range of prey, but two types of prey, amphibians and fish, dominated in the diet of the mink during all the seasons. Frogs, and first and foremost, the common frog Rana temporaria, were hunted by the mink, mainly from the late autumn until the early spring, and comprised up to 83.9% of the prey biomass (the multiannual average for November–December at the Majcz Wielki Lake). The most frequently eaten fish were cyprinids and percids. Seasonality of fish consumption by mink was not as well pronounced as in the case of amphibians. At the first two lakes, fish were hunted mainly in the winter and in the early spring, whereas at the third lake in the summer. The highest multiannual average share of fish in the diet of the mink was recorded in March–April at Lake Tuchlin (69.2% of the prey biomass). Crayfish, which were recorded in the diet mainly in the late spring and in the summer, comprised up to 59.6% of the prey biomass for May–June at the Majcz Wielki Lake. Birds, mammals and insects were supplementary food for the mink. During the breeding season, mink predation on waterfowl and their broods was correlated with the abundance of crested grebe Podiceps cristatus and coot Fulica atra nests in the area. The diet of individual mink varied considerably and the share of birds in the diet of the mink was related to the distance from individual mink dens to the colonies of waterfowl. In May–June, adult birds, chicks and eggs comprised up to 73.6% of the prey biomass of a female mink that inhabited a den located 100 m from the colony's edge. At all three lakes, the diet of the mink was the most diverse in the late spring and in the summer. An experimental program investigating the role of gum in the diet of captiveGalago senegalensis braccatus is reviewed. One set of studies investigated the role of gum chemistry in dietary preferences. The animals showed a preference forAcacia gums over gums from other plants. If condensed or hydrolized tannins were added to theAcacia gums, such gums were consumed at a lower rate than plainAcacia gum. This effect was stronger with the condensed (quebracho) tannin. The effect of such secondary compounds on gum consumption in wild galagos needs investigation. The second set of studies examined digestion of gums, which are complex polysaccarides probably requiring fermentation in the gut. Substitution of gum for simple carbohydrate sources in the diet lead to increased gut transit time. On the gum diet, animals maintained weight without an increase in intake or a decrease in activity levels. Apparent dry matter digestibility of the two diets was equivalent. Indicators of gut bacterial action increased on the gum diet. These observations are strong indirect evidence for an increase of fermentation in the gut on the gum diet. 相似文献

Few studies have investigated how meal patterns of ruminants are affected by diet fibre content. Dairy goats (N = 32) in late lactation and early gestation were housed in eight groups of four goats, with all combinations of breed (Alpine and Saanen) and lactation number (1 and 2) represented in each group. Each goat had access to its own individual feed trough placed on a weigh scale with data logged automatically. All goats were fed the same total mixed ration (TMR; 30% concentrate and 44.6% NDF in DM) ad libitum for a control period of 22 days. Using the same feed ingredients, half of the groups were then offered a High fibre diet (20% concentrate; 47.3% NDF), and the other half a Low fibre diet (40% concentrate; 41.5% NDF) for a treatment period of 16 days. Daily meal patterns (meal frequency, duration and size, feeding rate, daily feed intake and daily feeding time) were computed for each animal using a meal criterion of 8 min. The last 10 days for each period (control and treatment) were used to calculate individual period means and individual differences between the two periods. During the control period, the goats ate on average 12.1 ± 0.49 meals/day, consuming 4.2 ± 0.10 kg fresh TMR daily. When the ration changed, all measures of feeding behaviour except meal size changed asymmetrically for the goats on the two diets. Goats fed the High fibre diet reduced their meal frequency by 10%, and the first meal after feed distribution lasted 11% longer, leading to a 9% reduction in feeding rate and no significant changes in daily feed intake and daily feeding time. Goats on the Low fibre diet did not significantly change their meal frequency or meal size, but the combined changes nevertheless led to a 9% increase in daily feed intake. On the Low fibre diet, goats were able to increase their feeding rate by a third, leading to a reduction in meal durations, thus reducing daily feeding time by 13%. Goats adapt their feeding behaviour to the fibre proportion of the offered diet, with more changes when fibre content is lowered, which needs to be taken into account when comparing phenotypes and adaptability of small ruminants to different diets. 相似文献

The sandbar shark, Carcharhinus plumbeus, is a wide-ranging coastal species in tropical and temperate regions, and it is the most common species of shark in Hawaii, as in many locations where it occurs. Information on the diet and feeding habits of this species in the Pacific Ocean are extremely limited. For this study we quantified the diet of sandbar sharks in Hawaii based on records collected during the Hawaii Cooperative Shark Research and Control Program from 1967 to 1969. During this program a total of 565 stomachs were examined, of which 265 contained food. Sharks ranged in size from 59 to 190 cm total length. Teleosts were the most common prey group, but both cephalopods and crustaceans also occurred frequently. Ontogenetic changes in diet of sandbar sharks were apparent, with crustaceans forming a greater proportion of the diet of smaller sharks. Both cephalopods and elasmobranchs increased in importance with increasing shark size. Prey diversity also increased with size, with large, mobile, and reef prey species found more commonly in the diet of larger sharks. Mature male and female sharks appeared to segregate by depth, though major differences in the diet between the sexes were not apparent. However, there was some evidence of dietary differences between sharks caught in different depths and seasons. The results of this study suggest that sandbar sharks in Hawaii and throughout the world, are primarily piscivores, but also consume a variety of invertebrate prey, and that their diet varies with geographical location and stage of development. 相似文献

Ruminant herbivores have been shown to learn about food properties by associating food flavours with the food’s post-ingestive
consequences. Previous experimentation supporting the conditioned food aversion/preference hypothesis has generally employed
very simple diet learning tasks which do not effectively represent the wide range of foods selected within single bouts typical
of wild, free-ranging ruminant herbivores. We tested the ability of a ruminant herbivore to associate a food with artificially
administered nutrient rewards in a designed experiment where we altered the temporal pattern of encounter with the food as
well as the nature (fast or slow reward) of the post-ingestive outcome. Twenty-four goats were offered branches of Sitka spruce
(SS) and Norway spruce (NS) for 4 h per day on two days per week for five weeks. The pattern of feeding varied with treatment such that the species on offer changed every hour (short) or every 2 h (long). The energy treatment altered the reward delivered during Sitka consumption so that animals were dosed either with predominantly sugar
(rapidly fermented), predominantly starch (slower fermentation rate), or with water (placebo). Preference was measured on
the day following each learning day. We expected that goats would find it easier to associate SS with post-ingestive rewards
when the duration of encounter was longest, and that associations would be stronger with the most rapidly digested post-ingestive
reward. In the event, goats did not alter their consumption of SS in response to the treatments. Our results suggest that
at the scale of temporal resolution of encounters with different plant species (1–2 h), and at the different rates of experiencing
post-ingestive consequences tested in this experiment, ruminants do not appear to discriminate the nutritive properties of
foods predominantly through a post-ingestive feedback mechanism. They must, instead, use a range of cues—including post-ingestive
consequences—to assess food properties.

红角鸮(Otus sunia)广泛分布于东亚和南亚。2012和2013年的两个繁殖季节,在江苏省南京大学浦口校区通过红外摄像观察记录了红角鸮的摄食及育雏行为,统计了亲代红角鸮育雏食物的种类、育雏的时间和次数。以1 h为一个时段,利用单因素方差分析(ANOVA)及Student-Newman-Keulsa多重比较法分析各时段之间育雏频次的差异。亲鸟育雏的食物大部分为直翅目(62%)和鳞翅目(18%)昆虫,以及非昆虫类的无脊椎动物,如蜘蛛(8%)和唇足动物(7%),红角鸮也捕食小型陆栖脊椎动物例如田鼠、壁虎等育雏,但比例甚低(3%)。红角鸮育雏节律较为明显,亲鸟主要集中在夜间外出觅食,但在白天也有觅食行为。夜间共有三个育雏高峰,分别为日落之后的19:00~20:00时和21:00~22:00时以及日出之前的04:00~05:00时。 相似文献

Synopsis Brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis, shifts its diet from zoobenthos to pelagic prey when living sympatrically with white sucker, Catostomus commersoni, in lakes of the Laurentian Shield. We tested the hypothesis that this diet difference would have a significant impact on their pyloric caecal morphology in 5 lakes containing allopatric brook charr populations and 6 other lakes containing both brook charr and white sucker. We observed that the mean length of the most posterior caecum of charr was significantly greater in sympatry than in allopatry (X ± 1 SD: 9.91 ± 1.12 mm versus 8.44 ± 0.67 mm). This is equivalent to an increase of 18% of total pyloric caecal mass (dry weight) in sympatric brook charr. These results indicate that this response to differences in diet, well known in birds, also occurs in fish. 相似文献
