This study was carried out to obtain basic information on the transmission of Oesophagostomum dentatum and Hyostrongylus rubidus in outdoor reared pigs in Denmark. Eighteen 10 weeks old worm-free pigs were allocated into 3 groups of 6 pigs each. In May, all pigs were turned out on the same parasitologi-cally naive pasture, and after 2 weeks the pigs in groups 2 and 3 were experimentally infected with 10,800 O. dentatum and 8,700 H. rubidus infective larvae, respectively. Pigs in group 1 served as non-infected controls. All pigs were reared together on the experimental pasture for further 134 days until slaughter in October. Strongyle egg counts, differentiation of infective larvae at species level, serum pepsinogen, and herbage larval infectivity were monitored at regular intervals throughout. Both strongyle species established in the originally parasite-free pigs (group 1) and cross infections were established in group 2 and 3. The pigs were exposed to steadily increasing herbage infectivity of both species of strongyles. At the end of the experiment, geometric mean worm burdens of O. dentatum in groups 1,2 and 3 were 1202, 6136 and 1431 respectively, the burden in group 2 being significantly higher (p<0.05) than that of the 2 other groups. The geometric mean worm burdens of H. rubidus in groups 1, 2 and 3 were 4907, 3679 and 5246 respectively, showing no significant differences between groups.  相似文献

The survival and viability of eggs from Ascaris suum and Oesophagostomum dentatum and of infective larvae (L3) from O. dentatum were determined in the ensiled solid fraction of swine faeces after 0, 7, 14, 28 and 56 days of ensiling. The experiment had two treatments, un-ensiled and ensiled manure, in a split-plot design. Each of 50 containers was inoculated with 40,000 eggs of both A. suum and O. dentatum, and another 50 containers were inoculated with 32,747 L3 of O. dentatum each. A. suum eggs were not destroyed by the ensiling process, although their viability was diminished. O. dentatum eggs and larvae were destroyed during the first 7-14 days of the ensiling process.  相似文献

The prevalence of helminths in pigs was investigated in five rural communities situated on the embankment of Dongting Lake in Zhiyang County, Hunan Province, People's Republic of China, in an area known to be endemic for Schistosoma japonicum. The helminth prevalences identified on the basis of faecal egg count analysis were: Oesophagostomum spp. (86.7%), Ascaris suum (36.7%), Metastrongylus spp. (25.8%), Strongyloides spp. (25.8%), Trichuris suis (15.8%), Globocephalus spp. (6.7%), Gnathostoma spp. (4.2%), Schistosoma japonicum (5.0%) and Fasciola spp. (1.3%). Post mortem examinations of a small number of pigs depositing eggs of different helminth species revealed the presence of Oesophagostomum dentatum, O. quadrispinulatum, A. suum, Metastrongylus apri, M. pudendotectus, T. suis, G. hispidum and Ascarops dentata. Prevalences of all helminths, with the exception of Oesophagostomum spp., were higher in young pigs (< 8 months old) compared with adult pigs. Prevalences of trematodes were very low, especially for S. japonicum which had decreased dramatically compared with previous reports from this area of P.R. China, whereas prevalences of nematodes were generally in agreement with those reported from other Yangtze River Provinces. Results from helminth prevalence studies in pigs, conducted in other provinces of P.R. China between 1987 and 1997, are presented and discussed. It was concluded that a government helminth control programme, implemented in 1995 to control S. japonicum infection in pigs in Hunan Province, may have resulted in a greatly reduced prevalence of S. japonicum in pigs in this region.  相似文献

Cattle pastures established in areas previously covered by tropical rainforest can be abandoned in unproductive and degraded conditions. Transplanting native tree species to pastures is one common practice among rainforest restoration techniques, but several environmental barriers compromise transplant success. We assessed whether the presence of isolated trees and the removal of pasture grasses affect survival, growth, and allometry of transplanted saplings of the pioneer tree Trema micrantha (L.) Blume (Ulmaceae) into abandoned pastures in southeast Mexico. An isolated tree was selected in the center of each of four pasture sites of one hectare, and grass treatments were applied under the tree's canopy (0–10 m from the trunk) and in open pasture (15–48 m from the trunk). Grass removal treatments were control (grass present), cut with machete, herbicide application, and total grass removal with a gardening hoe. After 1 year, sapling survival was not different between the canopy and pasture areas (53%). Saplings showed higher survival probability (p < 0.05) in the hoe treatment (63 ± 9%) than in the control treatment (38 ± 9%). Height and crown cover growth rates were faster under the canopy of isolated trees compared with the open pasture. Saplings showed significantly greater crown area/height ratios under the canopy of isolated trees. Stressful environmental conditions restricted sapling growth in the open pasture. We conclude that complete removal of grasses and transplanting T. micrantha saplings in the vicinity of isolated trees can improve transplant success.  相似文献

ABSTRACT We recorded telemetry locations from 1,129 radiotagged turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo intermedia) on 4 study areas in the Texas Panhandle and southwestern Kansas, USA, from 2000 to 2004. Analyses of telemetry locations indicated both sexes selected riparian vegetative zones. Females did not select grazed or nongrazed pastures for daily movements. However, females did select nongrazed pastures for nest sites on 2 study areas and males selected for grazed pastures at one study area during the breeding season. We compared nest sites (n = 351) to random sites using logistic regression, which indicated height of visual obstruction, percent canopy cover, and percent bare ground provided the highest predictive power (P ≤ 0.003) for characteristics describing nest-site selection. Nest-site vegetative characteristics between vegetative zones differed primarily in composition: upland zone nest sites had more (P ≤ 0.001) shrubs and riparian zone nest sites had more (P ≤ 0.001) grass. There were no differences in measured nest site vegetative characteristics between pasture types, but there were differences between available nesting cover in grazed and nongrazed pastures. Random plots in grazed pastures had less grass cover (P ≤ 0.001) and more bare ground (P = 0.002). Because of cattle impacts on average grass height and availability, grazing would likely have the highest impact on nesting in riparian zones due to turkey use of grass as nesting cover. An appropriate grazing plan to promote Rio Grande turkey nesting habitat would include grazing upland zones in the spring, when it likely has little impact on nesting-site selection, and grazing riparian zones following breeding season completion. Grazing at light to moderate intensities with periods of rest did not affect male turkey pasture use and may have continued to maintain open areas used by male turkeys for displaying purposes.  相似文献

When livestock are turned out to semi-natural grasslands, an effective onset of grazing is important both for animal productivity and for defoliation of the sward, which preserve the biodiversity of the vegetation. The aim of this study was to investigate whether foraging behaviour of naïve calves turned out to pasture was more intense, with a resulting diminished live weight loss, when experienced cattle accompanied them acting as social models. Twenty-six first-season grazing (FSG) dairy calves, allocated to groups with or without company of older, grazing-experienced steers, were turned out to semi-natural grasslands. Cattle behaviour was automatically recorded for 24 h during the first day on pasture and during 24 h after 1 month. Furthermore, the average live weight changes for the first day and for the first month on pasture were calculated. Calves turned out to pasture accompanied by grazing-experienced steers had similar grazing times (on average 42.7% of the day) to calves turned out to pasture in groups without older steers, but they had higher grazing activity during the first day on pasture (score 124 vs. 99, P = 0.005). Live weight changes were similar in calves kept with as in calves kept without company of grazing-experienced steers (?4.60 kg for the first day and ?0.30 kg day?1 for the first month on pasture). In conclusion, the company of grazing-experienced conspecifics resulted in higher grazing activity in naïve calves, but their time spent grazing and live weight gains were unmodified. Hence, in this limited study we found no major positive effects on production of using grazing-experienced cattle as company to FSG calves on semi-natural grasslands.  相似文献

Between December and June, six paddocks that had been contaminated naturally with infective larvae of nematode parasites of cattle, were each subjected to one of six grazing treatments. The effects of these treatments on the infectivity of the pastures were assessed by slaughter and total worm counts of calves which subsequently grazed the paddocks, and by counts of larvae on pasture samples. Grazing by sheep during autumn resulted in reduced populations of Ostertagia ostertagi and Trichostrongylus axei, both in calves and on the pasture for up to 12 months after treatment. Similar effects were noted on pasture grazed by cattle repeatedly dosed with anthelmintics, and on ungrazed pasture. There was little effect of any treatment on numbers of Cooperia oncophora. It was concluded that the level of autumn contamination was of importance in determining the numbers of O. ostertagi in the following spring and summer.  相似文献

Little information is available on relationships between pest animal density and damage in natural ecosystems. Introduced European rabbits, Oryctolagus cuniculus, cause severe damage to Australian native vegetation but density–damage relationships are largely unexplored. There are no recognized simple methods to estimate their impacts on native pastures, due in part to confusion with grazing impact of other herbivores. We tested simple quantitative sampling methods using multiple small quadrats to detect site differences in pasture cover, pasture species richness and dung pellet density of herbivores, from which rabbit density and relative abundance of larger herbivores were estimated. Native pasture cover and species richness declined exponentially with increasing rabbit density, within the range of 0–5 rabbits ha?1, while cover of unpalatable exotic pasture species increased. By contrast, kangaroo abundance was positively related to palatable native pasture cover and negatively related to cover of unpalatable weeds, and had no negative effect on native pasture cover or species richness that was discernable against a background of low to moderate rabbit densities. Perennial native forbs and perennial grasses replaced invasive Wards weed as the dominant ground cover at low rabbit densities. We conclude that, regardless of previous grazing history, contemporary kangaroo grazing pressure and weed invasion, the severely degraded state of native pastures was perpetuated by rabbits. The effect of rabbits on native pasture can be recorded in a simple manner that is suitable for identifying density–damage relationships in the presence of other herbivores and changes over time. This method is seen as particularly useful in setting target densities below which rabbits must be managed to maintain native plant communities and ecosystem function in southern Australia. It may also be useful to demonstrate rabbits’ impacts in other regions, including optimum densities for plant biodiversity benefits in their native European range.  相似文献

The present investigation was carried out to assess the transfer of copper element from the soil to forage plants consumed by the ruminants in two different pastures at the Livestock Experimental Station at Sargodha, Punjab, Pakistan. Soil and forage samples were collected periodically from two different pastures and analyzed after wet digestion. The survey of copper flow from forage from both pastures in the grazing period exhibited a consistent pattern of decrease from sampling periods 1 to 4 across all the sampling periods. In the legumes and grass pastures, it was decreased regularly and reduced up to 50% to that at the beginning across all the samplings. The copper concentration was higher in the legume pasture than that of grass pasture and sufficient to fulfill the requirement of grazing animals, while in grass pasture, it was higher at the first two sampling periods but dropped to a marginal deficient level at sampling period 3 and reached at the severe deficient level at the fourth sampling period during this investigation. The soil–plant transfer factor for Cu was higher in legume pasture compared to its counterpart. It was found that with the increase of forage maturity, a significant reduction in the forage Cu concentration was observed reaching its minimum level at the last sampling period in the grass pasture. These concentrations were within the marginal and severe deficient levels and provide for only 76% of the ruminant requirements. The naturally upset balance of Cu offers a potential hazard not only to both pastures, but also to the Cu status of grazing ruminants therein. This necessitates the provision of additional amount of Cu mixture in the nutrition of livestock for health and reproduction potential enhancement of the animals being reared at that farm. Supplementing the deficient mineral with locally available Cu feed sources like green fodders, cakes, and brans or providing region-specific mineral supplements would alleviate the deficiency of copper during the late season at the livestock farm.  相似文献

Stocks of carbon in Amazonian forest biomass and soils have received considerable research attention because of their potential as sources and sinks of atmospheric CO2. Fluxes of CO2 from soil to the atmosphere, on the other hand, have not been addressed comprehensively in regard to temporal and spatial variations and to land cover change, and have been measured directly only in a few locations in Amazonia. Considerable variation exists across the Amazon Basin in soil properties, climate, and management practices in forests and cattle pastures that might affect soil CO2 fluxes. Here we report soil CO2 fluxes from an area of rapid deforestation in the southwestern Amazonian state of Acre. Specifically we addressed (1) the seasonal variation of soil CO2 fluxes, soil moisture, and soil temperature; (2) the effects of land cover (pastures, mature, and secondary forests) on these fluxes; (3) annual estimates of soil respiration; and (4) the relative contributions of grass‐derived and forest‐derived C as indicated by δ13CO2. Fluxes were greatest during the wet season and declined during the dry season in all land covers. Soil respiration was significantly correlated with soil water‐filled pore space but not correlated with temperature. Annual fluxes were higher in pastures compared with mature and secondary forests, and some of the pastures also had higher soil C stocks. The δ13C of CO2 respired in pasture soils showed that high respiration rates in pastures were derived almost entirely from grass root respiration and decomposition of grass residues. These results indicate that the pastures are very productive and that the larger flux of C cycling through pasture soils compared with forest soils is probably due to greater allocation of C belowground. Secondary forests had soil respiration rates similar to mature forests, and there was no correlation between soil respiration and either forest age or forest biomass. Hence, belowground allocation of C does not appear to be directly related to the stature of vegetation in this region. Variation in seasonal and annual rates of soil respiration of these forests and pastures is more indicative of flux of C through the soil rather than major net changes in ecosystem C stocks.  相似文献

Waller P.J., Dobson R.J., Donald A.D. and Thomas R.J. 1981. Populations of strongyloid nematode infective stages in sheep pastures : comparison between direct pasture sampling and tracer lambs as estimators of larval abundance. International Journal for Parasitology11: 359–367. Over a 2-year period, numbers of infective larvae in samples of pasture herbage, and numbers of worms in previously worm-free “tracer” lambs allowed 4 weeks grazing, were compared as estimators of the abundance of infective larvae on pastures.Transformation of sample estimates of infective larval numbers per 100 g herbage dry matter (DM) and of worm numbers in tracer sheep, according to the expression y = log10 (x+25), was effective in stabilizing variances. Estimates of error variance for each technique did not differ significantly among the genera Haemonchus, Ostertagia or Trichostrongylus and the pooled estimate for the tracer sheep method was 4 times greater than that for pasture sampling. From these results, more tracer sheep than pasture samples would be required to achieve the same level of precision with the two techniques. Using conventional statistical methods, the effects of numbers of pasture samples or tracer sheep on the size of the difference between two means which can be detected as significant and on the width of the confidence interval about a single mean, are illustrated. These can be used as a guide in the choice of sample sizes. Error variances for Nematodirus spp. were significantly less than for the other genera by pasture sampling, and greater by the tracer sheep technique. Possible reasons for this are discussed, but it is concluded that pasture sampling is likely to be much the more precise method for estimating Nematodirus spp. infective larval availability.Changes with time in infective larval abundance, for Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus and Nematodirus spp. which were present in moderate to low numbers, followed similar trends by both techniques. However, for Ostertagia spp. larvae, which were much more abundant, peak levels were defined more sharply and occurred earlier by pasture sampling than by the tracer method. It is suggested that worm counts from tracer sheep, especially those grazing for 4 weeks rather than shorter periods, may systematically underestimate the infective larval population on pasture at high levels of abundance owing to density-dependent worm loss.  相似文献

The extent to which oocysts of the coccidian parasite Eimeria alabamensis can survive the winter and cause clinical coccidiosis in different parts of Sweden was investigated. Fecal samples were collected between May and July 1993 from calves on 59 farms where calves had grazed the same pasture for at least 5 consecutive years. The farms were situated in 9 regions of Sweden with different climatic conditions in the winter. On each farm, 5 samples of feces were collected from the floor of the calf-house before the calves were turned out in the spring, and again from the pasture on days 4 or 5, 8 or 9 and 10 or 11 after they were turned out. Overwintering of oocysts of E. alabamensis was considered to have occurred if an increase in the excretion rate of oocysts of this species could be demonstrated 8 to 11 days after calves had been turned out to pastures that had not been grazed since the previous autumn. Oocysts were shown to have overwintered on 27 farms, representing all 9 regions. Samples from 20 (34%) of the farms representing all the climatic regions contained more than 850000 oocysts per g of feces. This was comparable with the numbers found in animals with clinical coccidiosis due to E. alabamensis. Delaying turnout until the beginning of July did not affect the infection rate of the calves. However, calves which were turned out to pastures that had been grazed by older cattle or horses, either earlier in the spring or in previous years, excreted significantly fewer oocysts than calves which were turned out to pastures that had been grazed only by calves. A questionnaire answered by 321 dairy farmers revealed that of the 298 farmers who turned their first-season grazing cattle out to traditional pastures, 179 (60%) had used the same pasture for at least 5 years. These 179 farmers had experienced a significantly higher incidence of diarrhoea in their calves during the first 2 weeks at pasture than those farmers who had used different pastures.  相似文献

Changes in agriculture (intensification or abandonment) have resulted in a dramatical reduction of semi-natural grasslands in Central Europe in the 20th century. Recent management actions aim to restore overgrown and formerly fertilized nutrient-poor grasslands. Former land use is known to influence the present-day vegetation. Similar information is not available for animals with low dispersal ability. We investigated the effect of pasture management history over a period of 55 years on the present-day land snail diversity in 20 dry, nutrient-poor grasslands in the Swiss Jura mountains. Snails were recorded in pastures left unmanaged for 10–40 years but recently cleared from overgrowing shrubs, in pastures fertilized for 15–25 years but recently managed extensively (no fertilizer), and in pastures which have been extensively managed throughout (=control). Past shrub cover had a negative effect on the total number of snail species and the number of red-listed individuals. Former use of fertilizer reduced red-listed species and individuals and changed the snail community. Three species (Vitrina pellucida, Helicella itala and Abida secale) were found less frequently in formerly fertilized pastures than in extensive pastures. Our results show that changes in pasture use for a period of 10–40 years caused long-term alterations of the land snail fauna.  相似文献

Land use intensification drives biodiversity loss worldwide. In heterogeneous landscape mosaics, both overall forest area and anthropogenic matrix structure induce changes in biological communities in primary habitat remnants. However, community changes via cross‐habitat spillover processes along forest–matrix interfaces remain poorly understood. Moreover, information on how landscape attributes affect spillover processes across habitat boundaries are embryonic. Here, we quantify avian α‐ and β‐diversity (as proxies of spillover rates) across two dominant types of forest–matrix interfaces (forest–pasture and forest–eucalyptus plantation) within the Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot in southeast Brazil. We also assess the effects of anthropogenic matrix type and landscape attributes (forest cover, edge density and land‐use diversity) on bird taxonomic and functional β‐diversity across forest–matrix boundaries. Alpha taxonomic richness was higher in forest edges than within both matrix types, but between matrix types, it was higher in pastures than in eucalyptus plantations. Although significantly higher in forests edges than in the adjacent eucalyptus, bird functional richness did not differ between forest edges and adjacent pastures. Community changes (β‐diversity) related to species and functional replacements (turnover component) were higher across forest–pasture boundaries, whereas changes related to species and functional loss (nested component) were higher across forest–eucalyptus boundaries. Forest edges adjacent to eucalyptus had significant higher species and functional replacements than forest edges adjacent to pastures. Forest cover negatively influenced functional β‐diversity across both forest–pasture and forest–eucalyptus interfaces. We show the importance of matrix type and the structure of surrounding landscapes (mainly forest cover) on rates of bird assemblage spillover across forest‐matrix boundaries, which has profound implications to biological fluxes, ecosystem functioning and land‐use management in human‐modified landscapes.  相似文献

The impact of age-related resistance on the regulation of population dynamics of adult Trichuris suis was investigated in an experimental pig model. Helminth-na?ve pigs varying in age from five weeks to four years were infected with T. suis to determine susceptibility to infection. Sows had a significantly lower establishment of adult T. suis worms compared with weaner pigs. Adult worm populations were highly overdispersed in both sows and grower pigs contrasted by a more even distribution among weaner pigs. Sows had significantly lower worm fecundities compared to weaner and grower pigs; T. suis from grower pigs, in turn, had reduced fecundity compared to worms in weaner pigs. In conclusion, we provide the first controlled experimental evidence that age-related resistance to T. suis occurs in pigs.  相似文献

Inclusion of legume in grass pastures optimizes protein values of the forage and promotes improved digestibility. Therefore, we hypothesized that finishing steers on a novel combination of legumes and grass pasture would produce carcasses with acceptable traits when compared to carcasses from steers finished in feedlot systems. In this study, we evaluated the effects of finishing steers on three systems including: grazing legume–grass pasture containing oats, ryegrass, white and red clover (PAST), grazing PAST plus supplementation with whole corn grain (14 g/kg BW (SUPP)), and on a feedlot-confined system with concentrate only (28 g/kg BW, consisting of 850 g/kg of whole corn grain and 150 g/kg of protein–mineral–vitamin supplement (GRAIN)) on growth performance of steers, carcass traits and digestive disorders. Eighteen steers were randomly assigned to one of three dietary treatments and finished for 91 days. Data regarding pasture and growth performance were collected during three different periods (0 to 28, 29 to 56 and 57 to 91 days). Subsequently, steers were harvested to evaluate carcass traits, presence of rumenitis, abomasitis and liver abscesses. The legume–grass pasture provided more than 19% dry matter of protein. In addition, pasture of paddocks where steers were assigned to SUPP and PAST treatments showed similar nutritional quality. When compared to PAST, finishing on SUPP increased total weight gain per hectare, stocking rate, daily and total weight gains. The increase of weight gain was high to GRAIN than SUPP and PAST. Steers finished on GRAIN had high hot carcass weight, fat thickness and marbling score when compared to PAST. However, these attributes did not differ between GRAIN and SUPP. Abomasum lesions were more prevalent in steers finished on GRAIN when compared to PAST. Results of this research showed that it is possible to produce carcasses with desirable market weight and fat thickness by finishing steers on legume–grass pasture containing oats, ryegrass, white and red clover. Moreover, supplementing steers with corn when grazing on legume–grass pasture produced similar carcass traits when compared to beef fed corn only.  相似文献

Rates and patterns of nitrogen transformation differ in divergently managed pasture soils. In pastures with low nutrient inputs, N is utilized efficiently and it is assimilated by plants and soil microorganisms for synthesis of biomass. In more intensive pastures, characterized with higher N inputs, significant amounts of N can be lost from the ecosystem in various forms. Two soils of a cattle overwintering area with different levels of cattle disturbance were supplied with a solution of KNO3 in various levels corresponding in range to 0–500 kg N ha?1. Emissions of N2O were measured during 24 h after a NO3 ?-N application. We hypothesized that under a low disturbance small additions of up to 5 kg NO3 ?-N are used by plants and soil microbes without an increase in N2O emissions, while a pasture adapted to a moderate disturbance will increase N2O emissions. Results showed that in both soils, the addition of N always increased N2O emissions, while emissions were more pronounced in soil at the location with a higher intensity of cattle traffic. Contrary to our hypothesis, however, NO3 –N was not fully metabolized in the soil with low disturbance by the cattle. Probable explanations of such a result were lower intensity of N transformations in this soil and low utilisation of N by grass. Our results suggest that under certain conditions relatively low nitrate-N inputs can also stimulate N2O fluxes from soils.  相似文献

Pastoralism is the main land use in the humid tropical Andes of South America. Wide areas of mountain rainforest have been cleared for gaining pastureland. Due to the lack of indigenous useful grasses in the pristine forests, mainly exotic grass species have been used for establishing the pastures. In the Ecuadorian Andes, Axonopus compressus, Melinis minutiflora, Pennisetum clandestinum and Holcus lanatus are common pasture grass species. Their preference for certain microsites resulted in a mosaic of different pasture types, which reflect the differing ecological conditions on the undulating terrain of the mountain slopes. During the last decades, however, another exotic grass species, Setaria sphacelata has widely been introduced which, because of its fast growth on some of the sites could successfully suppress the formerly dominant plant species. With respect to the changing microclimate and cattle stocking rates the present study explored, whether planting Setaria is the best option for the common low-input type of pasture farming in these tropical mountains. In a study over twenty years, the development of four main pasture types, dominated by the above-mentioned grass species was investigated in areas with and without Setaria, and their topographical occurrence on the sloping terrain was analyzed. On forty-eight plots a pairwise (with or without Setaria) comparison of species composition and diversity, biomass production, forage quality and soil properties was performed. Although Setaria grows faster than the other grass species, its productivity was only higher on flat terrain. The nutritive value of the Setaria plots was at best equivalent to that of the former pastures, while species richness was consistently lower. Our results suggest the maintenance of a terrain-adapted diversification of the pastures and in particular the use of Setaria only on flat terrain.  相似文献

A grazing study was undertaken to examine the effect of maintaining three levels of pre-grazing herbage mass (HM) on dairy cow performance, grass dry matter (DM) production and output from perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) pastures. Cows were randomly assigned to one of three pre-grazing HM treatments: 1150 – Low HM (L), 1400 – Medium HM (M) or 2000 kg DM/ha – High HM (H). Herbage accumulation under grazing was lowest (P<0.01) on the L treatment and cows grazing the L pastures required more grass silage supplementation during the grazing season (+73 kg DM/cow) to overcome pasture deficits due to lower pasture growth rates (P<0.05). Treatment did not affect daily milk production or pasture intake, although cows grazing the L pastures had to graze a greater daily area (P<0.01) and increase grazing time (P<0.05) to compensate for a lower pre-grazing HM (P<0.01). The results indicate that, while pre-grazing HM did not influence daily milk yield per cow, adapting the practise of grazing low HM (1150 kg DM/ha) pasture reduces pasture DM production and at a system level may increase the requirement for imported feed.  相似文献

Actinobacillus suis is an important bacterial pathogen of healthly pigs. An O-antigen (lipopolysaccharide; LPS) serotyping system is being developed to study the prevalence and distribution of representative isolates from both healthy and diseased pigs. In a previous study, we reported that A. suis serogroup O:1 strains express LPS with a (1-->6)-beta-D-glucan O-antigen chain polysaccharide that is similar in structure to a key cell-wall component in yeasts, such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans. This study describes the O-antigen polysaccharide chemical structure of an O:2 serogroup strain, A. suis H91-0380, which possesses a tetrasaccharide repeating block with the structure: -->3)-beta-D-Galp-(1-->4)-[alpha-D-Galp-(1-->6)]-beta-D-Glcp-(1-->6)-beta-D-GlcpNAc-(1-->. Studies have shown that A. suis serogroup O:2 strains are associated with severely diseased animals; therefore, work on the synthesis of a glycoconjugate vaccine employing O:2 O-antigen polysaccharide to vaccinate pigs against A. suis serogroup O:2 strains is currently underway.  相似文献
