The nucleation, ice crystal shapes and thermodynamic stability of polar stratospheric clouds particles are interesting concerns owing to their implication in the ozone layer destruction. Some of these particles are formed by conformers of H2O, HNO3, and H2SO4. We carried out calculations using density functional theory (DFT) to obtain optimized structures. Several stable trimers are achieved —divided in two groups, one with HNO3 moiety, second with H2SO4 moiety— after pre-optimization at B3LYP/6-31G and subsequently optimization at B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. For both most stable conformers five H2O molecules are added to their optimized trimers to calculate hydrated geometries. The OH stretching harmonic frequencies are provided for all aggregates. The zero-point energy correction (ZEPC), relative electronic energies (?E), relative reaction Gibbs free energies ?(?G)k-relative, and cooling constant (K cooling ) are reported at three temperatures: 188 K, 195 K, and 210 K. Shapes given in our calculations are compared with various experimental shapes as well as comparisons with their thermo-stabilities.

The electric dipole transitions between pure spin and mixed spin electronic states are calculated at the XMC-QDPT2 and MCSCF levels of theory, respectively, for different intermolecular distances of the C6H6 and O2 collisional complex. The magnetic dipole transition moment between the mixed-spin ground (“triplet”) and the first excited (“singlet”) states is calculated by quadratic response at MCSCF level of theory. The obtained results confirm the theory of intensity borrowing and increasing the intensity of electronic transitions in the C6H6?+?O2 collision. The calculation of magnetically induced current density is performed for benzene molecule being in contact with O2 at the distances from 3.5 to 4.5 Å. The calculation shows that the aromaticity of benzene is rising due to the conjugation of π-MOs of both molecules. The C6H6?+?O2 complex becomes nonaromatic at the short distances (r?<?3.5 Å). The computation of static polarizability in the excited electronic states of the C6H6?+?O2 collisional complex at various distances supports the theory of red solvatochromic shift of the a?→?X band.

The electronic features of anti-tumor agent, temozolomide, and its degradation products (MTIC and metabolite AIC) have been traced by means of UV absorption spectroscopy in vacuo and aqueous media. For comparison, electronic spectra of related structures and drugs (e.g., dacarbazine) were also investigated. These investigations were carried out using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) method while the conductor like screening model (COSMO) were applied for the inclusion of solvent effects in electronic spectra. From functional benchmarking, two methods; B3LYP and O3LYP were selected among several other methods with 6-311+G(2d,p) basis set aiming to get the best results in accord with the experimental values. An assessment of the obtained spectra has shown that O3LYP functional gives a mean absolute error (MAE) from experimental absorption peaks of 4.3 nm compared to the 7.2 nm MAE value at B3LYP level in aqueous media. Furthermore, since the structural and tautomeric conformers affect the electronic spectra, conformational preferences have been analyzed in temozolomide, dacarbazine, and their related structures. Temozolomide structure possesses two rotamers that differ in the orientation of carboxamide moiety with a small energy difference (energy difference of 1.39 kcal mol?1 in vacuo and 0.35 kcal mol?1 in aqueous media at B3LYP/6-311++G(2df,3pd). The more stable and meta-stable TMZ rotamer have shown their absorption maxima at 329–334 nm, respectively, at O3LYP level in aqueous media. Applying statistical calculation according to Boltzmann population formula at 25 °C and computed weighed mean estimates the λmax of temozolomide at 331 nm, which is in notable agreement with the experimental value (330 nm). Moreover, molecular orbital composition analysis has been conducted in order to interpret these findings.

The C2 fragmentation energies of the most stable isolated-pentagon-rule (IPR) isomers of the C80 and C82 fullerenes were evaluated with second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2) theory, density-functional theory (DFT) and the semiempirical self-consistent charge density-functional tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) method. Zero-point energy, ionization energy and empirical C2 corrections were included in the calculation of fragmentation energies for comparison with experimental C2 fragmentation energies of the fullerene cations. In the case of the most probable Stone-Wales pathway of C2 fragmentation of C80, the calculated \(D_{0} {\left( {{\text{C}}_{{{\text{80}}}} ^{ + } } \right)}\) agree well with experimental data, whereas in the case of C82 fragmentation, the calculated \(D_{0} {\left( {{\text{C}}_{{{\text{82}}}} ^{ + } } \right)}\) exceed by up to 1.2 eV the experimental ones, which suggests that other IPR isomers may be present in sufficient amounts in experimental samples. Computer-intensive MP2 calculations and DFT calculations with larger basis sets do not yield much improved C2 fragmentation energies, compared to those reported earlier with B3LYP/3-21G. On the other hand, semiempirical approaches such as SCC-DFTB, which are orders of magnitude less intensive, yield satisfactory fragmentation energies for higher fullerenes and may become a method of choice for routine calculations of fullerenes and carbon nanotubes.
Figure C2 fragmentation energies of C80 and C82 fullerenes have been calculated with B3LYP/6-31G* model chemistry, with semiempirical self-consistent-charge density-functional tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) method and with the more rigorous MP2 method. The influence of basis set extension and level of theory on the resulting fragmentation energies is discussed

Using armchair-type single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) of different sizes as model compounds for lignite, the effect of water molecule confinement on the water-holding capacity of lignite pores was investigated. Results indicated that the water-holding capacity of pores with diameters of <10 nm was eight times larger than that of pores with diameters of 100 nm. The configuration of the cluster of water molecules in each SWCNT and the binding energy between each SWCNT and the water molecules within it were calculated by means of density functional theory using a hybrid functional: M06-2X/6-311+G**, 6-31G*. The results prove that the configurations of the water molecules in the SWCNTs are very different to their configuration in the unconfined state. In vacuum, the cluster of three water molecules adopted a trimer configuration, while they presented a linear configuration in the 6.78 Å SWCNT. Similarly, in vacuum, the cluster of five water molecules formed a five-membered ring, while they favored a linear configuration in the 6.78 Å SWCNT, a zigzag configuration in the 8.14 Å SWCNT, and a trimer?+?1?+?1 configuration (i.e., a trimer plus two isolated water molecules) in the 9.49 Å, 10.85 Å, and 13.75 Å SWCNTs. There was found to be a degree of competition between the coupling energy of the water molecules with the SWCNT and the hydrogen bonding among the water molecules. When the diameter of the SWCNT was >1 nm, the hydrogen bonding among the water molecules dominated, while the coupling energy of the water molecules with the SWCNT amounted to only 30–40% of the total interaction energy of the water molecules.

Second group metal dimers can replace the carbon atom in benzene to form metallabenzene (C5H6M2) compounds. These complexes possess some aromatic character and promising hydrogen adsorption properties. In this study, we investigated the aromatic character of these compounds using aromaticity indices and molecular orbital analysis. To determine the nature of interactions between hydrogen and the metallic center, variation-perturbational decomposition of interaction energy was applied together with ETS-NOCV analysis. The results obtained suggest that the aromatic character comes from three π orbitals located mainly on the C5H5 ? fragment. The high hydrogen adsorption energy (up to 6.5 kcal mol?1) results from two types of interaction. In C5H6Be2, adsorption is controlled by interactions between the empty metal orbital and the σ orbital of the hydrogen molecule (Kubas interaction) together with corresponding back-donation interactions. Other C5H6M2 compounds adsorb H2 due to Kubas interactions enhanced by H2–π interactions.

The adsorption behavior of sulfur-based toxic gases (H2S and SO2) on armchair silicene nanoribbons (ASiNRs) was investigated using first-principles density functional theory (DFT). Being a zero band gap material, application of bulk silicene is limited in nanoelectronics, despite its high carrier mobility. By restricting its dimensions into one dimension, construction of nanoribbons, and by introduction of a defect, its band gap can be tuned. Pristine armchair silicene nanoribbons (P-ASiNRs) have a very low sensitivity to gas molecules. Therefore, a defect was introduced by removal of one Si atom, leading to increased sensitivity. To deeply understand the impact of the aforementioned gases on silicene nanoribbons, electronic band structures, density of states, charge transfers, adsorption energies, electron densities, current-voltage characteristics and most stable adsorption configurations were calculated. H2S is dissociated completely into HS and H species when adsorbed onto defective armchair silicene nanoribbons (D-ASiNRs). Thus, D-ASiNR is a likely catalyst for dissociation of the H2S gas molecule. Conversely, upon SO2 adsorption, P-ASiNR acts as a suitable sensor, whereas D-ASiNR provides enhanced sensitivity compared with P-ASiNR. On the basis of these results, D-ASiNR can be expected to be a disposable sensor for SO2 detection as well as a catalyst for H2S reduction.

Zoledronic acid (ZL) has been used widely for treating skeletal diseases because of its high potency in inhibiting bone resorption. A detailed understanding of its physicochemical characteristics may be of great significance in both medicinal chemistry and structural biology for the design of novel bisphosphonates with higher activity. In the present work, the monoclinic (IM) and triclinic (IT) polymorphs of ZL in the gas phase and the aqueous phase were studied by density functional theory (DFT) method at the B3LYP/6-311++G** level. The polarizable continuum model (PCM) was employed to study the solvent effect on structures and properties. The optimized IM and IT conformations in both phases are in reasonable agreement with the experimental structures with the overall mean absolute percent deviation (MAPD%) less than 3.1 %. The presence of intramolecular hydrogen bond within both conformations was identified in the solvent. The IR spectra were simulated and assigned in detail, which agreed well with the experimental data. The intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions resulted in the shift of vibrational frequencies of hydroxyl to the low band by 12–22 cm?1 and 24–26 cm?1 for IM and IT conformations, respectively. Their thermodynamic properties were also calculated based on the harmonic vibrational analysis, including standard heat capacity (C ° p,m), entropy (S ° m), and enthalpy (H ° m). The molecular stability, hydrogen bonding interaction and other electronic properties have been further analyzed by the natural bond orbital (NBO), atoms in molecules (AIM), molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) and frontier molecular orbital (FMO) analysis.

Using density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD), we studied the interaction of a titanium atom with a half of a C60 fullerene (i.e., C30), formed from the corannulene structure with a pentagonal base. We considered atmospheric pressure and 300 K. We found that the most stable adsorption of the titanium atom on C30 occurs in the concave surface of the molecule. Afterward, we investigated the interaction of the system C30-titanium with carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide molecules, respectively. We found that each of these molecules is chemisorbed, with no dissociation. The value of the adsorption energy for the carbon monoxide molecule varies from ?0.897 to ?1.673 eV, and for the carbon dioxide molecule, it is between ?1.065 and ?1.274 eV. These values depend on the initial orientation of these molecules with respect to TiC30.

The catalytic pyrolysis pathways of carbonyl compounds in coal were systematically studied using density functional theory (DFT), with benzaldehyde (C6H5CHO) employed as a coal-based model compound and ZnO, γ-Al2O3, and CaO as catalysts. The results show that the products of both pyrolysis and catalytic pyrolysis are C6H6 and CO. However, the presence of any of the catalysts changes the reaction pathway and reduces the energy barrier, indicating that these catalysts promote C6H5CHO decomposition.
Graphical abstract The presence of catalysts changes the reaction pathway and the energy barrier decreases in the order Ea (no catalyst)> Ea (CaO)> Ea (γ-Al2O3)> Ea (ZnO), indicating that these catalysts promote C6H5CHO decomposition.

A systematic study on the first excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) in 2RAI-H2O (R = OH, OCH3, CN, NO2, CHO) complexes in solution were investigated at the TD-M06-2X/6-31 + G(d, p) level. The double proton transfer occurred in an asynchronous but concerted protolysis fashion no matter which substituent R was used at C2 position in pyrrole ring in the 7AI-H2O complex. The specific vibrational-mode of ESPT in the model systems was confirmed and contributed to promote the reaction rate by shortening the reaction path. The substituent effects of different groups on the ESPT thermodynamics and kinetics were discussed. It was obvious that the geometries, barrier height, asynchrony, and specific vibration-mode of excited-state proton transfer changed with the different substituent groups.
Graphical Abstract The distance between two neighboring heavy atoms such as N1-O11 (R1) and O11-N8 (R2) distances played an important role in the proton transfer reaction. The sum of the N1-O11 and O11-N8 distances in the reactant of 2RAI-H2O (R=H, OH, OCH3; CN, CHO, NO2) complexes is in the range of 5.542 Å~5.692 Å and changes along with the substituent group at C2 position in the pyrrole ring. The ESDPT barrier height and the sum of the N1-O11 and O11-N8 distances have a good correlation.

The cooperativity effects of the H-bonding interactions in HMX (1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazacyclooctane)???HMX???FA (formamide), HMX???HMX???H2O and HMX???HMX???HMX complexes involving the chair and chair–chair HMX are investigated by using the ONIOM2 (CAM-B3LYP/6–31++G(d,p):PM3) and ONIOM2 (M06-2X/6–31++G(d,p):PM3) methods. The solvent effect of FA or H2O on the cooperativity effect in HMX???HMX???HMX are evaluated by the integral equation formalism polarized continuum model. The results show that the cooperativity and anti-cooperativity effects are not notable in all the systems. Although the effect of solvation on the binding energy of ternary system HMX???HMX???HMX is not large, that on the cooperativity of H-bonds is notable, which leads to the mutually strengthened H-bonding interaction in solution. This is perhaps the reason for the formation of different conformation of HMX in different solvent. Surface electrostatic potential and reduced density gradient are used to reveal the nature of the solvent effect on cooperativity effect in HMX???HMX???HMX.

Density functional theory (B3LYP, B3LYP-D2 and wB97XD functionals) was used in finite models of zigzag carbon nanotubes (CNT), (n,0)×k with n?=?6–9 and k?=?2–4, to systematically investigate the effects of size on their structural and electronic properties. We found that the ratio between the length (L t) and the diameter (d t) of the pristine CNT has to be larger than 2, i.e., L t/d t?>?2, in order to provide the observed experimental trends of C=C bond distances, as well as to maintain the atomic charges nearly constant and zero around the center of the tube. Therefore, the concepts of useful length and volume were developed and tested for the encapsulation process of HCN and C2H2 into CNTs. The energies involved in these processes, as well as the changes in molecular structure and electronic properties of the dopants and the CNTs are discussed and rationalized by the amount of charge transferred between dopant and CNT.

Ionic hydrocarbon compounds that contain hypercarbon atoms, which bond to five or more atoms, are important intermediates in chemical synthesis and may also find applications in hydrogen storage. Extensive investigations have identified hydrocarbon compounds that contain a five- or six-coordinated hypercarbon atom, such as the pentagonal-pyramidal hexamethylbenzene, C6(CH3)62+, in which a hexacoordinate carbon atom is involved. It remains challenging to search for further higher-coordinated carbon in ionic hydrocarbon compounds, such as seven- and eight-coordinated carbon. Here, we report ab initio density functional calculations that show a stable 3D hexagonal-pyramidal configuration of tropylium trication, (C7H7)3+, in which a heptacoordinate carbon atom is involved. We show that this tropylium trication is stable against deprotonation, dissociation, and structural deformation. In contrast, the pyramidal configurations of ionic C8H8 compounds, which would contain an octacoordinate carbon atom, are unstable. These results provide insights for developing new molecular structures containing hypercarbon atoms, which may have potential applications in chemical synthesis and in hydrogen storage.

The electronic structures and spectroscopic properties of two complexes [M(pic)3] (M = Ir, Rh) containing picolinate as bidentate ligands have been calculated by means density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT/TD-DFT using three hybrid functionals B3LYP, PBE0 and mPW1PW91. The PBE0 and mPW1PW91 functionals, which have the same HF exchange fraction (25%), give similar results and do not differ drastically from B3LYP results. Calculated geometric parameters of the complexes are in good agreement with the available experimental data. The UV absorptions observed in acetonitrile were assigned on the basis of singlet state transitions. The most intense band observed in the UV-C region corresponds to ligand-to-ligand charge transfer states (LLCT) in both complexes. The theoretical spectrum of the rhodium complex is characterized by a large degree of mixing between metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer (MLCT), LLCT and metal centered (MC) states in the UV-A region. The presence of low-lying excited states with MC character affects the absorption spectrum under spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects and play important roles in the photochemical properties.

Proton shifts varied between 1.03 ppm to 12.00 ppm and carbon shifts between 7.87 ppm to 209.28 ppm. It was found that the best method for calculating 13C shifts is PBE1PBE/aug-cc-pVDZ with CSGT or IGAIM approaches (mae?=?1.66 ppm), for 1H the best results were obtained with HSEh1PBE, mPW1PW91, PBE1PBE, CAM-B3LYP, and B3PW91 functionals with cc-pVTZ basis set and with CSGT or IGAIM approaches (mae?=?0.28 ppm). We found that often larger basis sets do not give better results for chemical shifts. The best basis sets for calculating 1H and 13C chemical shifts were cc-pVTZ and aug-cc-pVDZ, respectively. CSGT and IGAIM NMR approaches can perform really well and are in most cases better than popular GIAO approach.

The dual role of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium trifluoroacetic acid ([C4mim]TFA) as an extractant for thiophene (TH) and a catalyst for the oxidation of TH was explored at the molecular level by performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The calculated interaction energies demonstrated why [C4mim]TFA is a better extractant for thiophene sulfone (THO2) than for TH. Two pathways were proposed for the oxidation of TH to THO2 with [C4mim]TFA acting as a catalyst. In the dominant pathway, a peracid is formed which then oxidizes TH to the sulfoxide and sulfones. The presence of [C4mim]TFA was found to greatly reduce the barrier to the oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of TH using H2O2 as an oxidant.

Magnetic shielding constants for an isolated fullerene C60, cucurbituril CB[9], and the host-guest complex C60@CB[9] were calculated as a function of separation of the monomers. Our results in the gas phase and water indicate a significant variation of the magnetic properties for all atoms of the monomers in the complex and after liberation of fullerene C60 from the interior of the CB[9] cavity. The interaction between the two monomers results in a charge transfer that collaborates with a redistribution of electron density to deshield the monomers.

Since the thermal stabilities of ionic liquids (ILs) are of significance for their application, an amine-functionalized IL 1,2-dimethyl-(3-aminoethyl) imidazolium tetrafluoroborate [aEMMIM][BF4] was chosen to study thermal decomposition mechanisms via the methods of FT-IR, 1H NMR, TGA, TGA-MS and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Theoretical and experimental results indicated that amine-functionalization reduces the thermal stability of [aEMMIM][BF4] compared to its non-functionalized counterpart. Moreover, we found that [aEMMIM][BF4] follows a unimolecular nucleophilic substitution (SN1) decomposition (98.8 %), whereas the bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (SN2) decomposition (1.2 %) is unfavorable. The SN1 and SN2 reactions were fully optimized at B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level, and the energies of reactant (R), intermediates (IM), transition state (TS) and product (P) were obtained and analyzed by reaction mechanism. The energy of the intermediate is higher than that of the reactants by 18.92 kJ mol?1, and the energy of the TS is higher than that of the IM by 155.23 kJ mol?1. This result indicates that the IM are also more stable than the P2 product, thus the reaction is endothermic. The chemical nature of the covalent and hydrogen bonds was analyzed by vibrational modes analysis (VMA), nature bond orbital (NBO) and the theory of atoms in molecules (AIM).
Graphical Abstract Proposed thermal decomposition of [aEMMIM][BF4] via unimolecular ( SN1) and bimolecular( SN2) nucleophilic substitution mechanisms. The electrostatic potential surface (ESP) of the transition state illustrates that hydrogen bonds are generated when [BF4]? is close to [aEMMIM]+, and SN1 decomposition is much favorable than SN2 decomposition.
