Aim Our aim was to understand the processes that have shaped the present‐day distribution of the freshwater limpet Ancylus fluviatilis sensu stricto in order to predict the consequences of global climate change for the geographical range of this species. Location North‐western Europe. Methods We sampled populations of A. fluviatilis sensu stricto over the entire range of the species (north‐western Europe) and sequenced 16S ribosomal RNA (16S) and cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) mitochondrial fragments to perform phylogenetic and phylogeographical analyses. Climatic niche modelling allowed us to infer the climatic preferences of the species. A principal components analysis identified the most important climatic factors explaining the actual range of A. fluviatilis. We also identified which climatic factor was the most limiting at range margins, and predicted the species’ geographical range under a climate change scenario [Community Climate Model 3 (CCM3)]. Results By means of the phylogeographical analysis, we infer that A. fluviatilis sensu stricto occupied northern refuges during the Last Glacial Maximum. We show that the climatic preferences of Baltic populations are significantly different from those of Central European populations. The projection of the occupied area under the CCM3 climate model predicts a moderate poleward shift of the northern range limits, but a dramatic loss of areas currently occupied, for instance in northern Germany and in southern Great Britain. Main conclusions The post‐glacial range dynamics of A. fluviatilis are not governed by niche conservatism. Therefore, we must be cautious about bioclimatic model predictions: the expected impact of climate change could be tempered by the adaptive potential this species has already shown in its evolutionary history. Thus, modelling approaches should rather be seen as conservative forecasts of altered species ranges as long as the adaptive potential of the organisms in question cannot be predicted.  相似文献

Egg parasitoids of the genus Anagrus Haliday (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) are natural enemies of many pests around the world. We used an integrative approach to characterize some species belonging to the Anagrus atomus group, using specimens reared from leafhoppers infesting some Lamiaceae. Starting from morphological identifications based on available keys, we carried out a multi-locus genetic characterization using phylogenetic and species delimitation analyses, and integrated it with biological and morphometric evidence. This approach revealed the existence of a new species, A. nepetellae sp. nov., here described along with its phenological traits. The approach also allowed us to characterize the expected taxonomic stability of other putative species within the group. We propose two new species groups called the atomus group sensu stricto and the vilis group, with the goal of streamlining the taxonomy of the atomus group. We also present a key for the identification of females of the European species of the atomus group sensu stricto. Some specimens show heterozygosity in 28S-D2 sequences, suggesting hybridization between A. atomus and A. nepetellae, which, if it is common between other species as well, could partly explain the taxonomic problems in the genus Anagrus. DNA sequencing of specimens reared by the same biofactory at different times suggests involuntary contamination leading to the displacement of a laboratory strain of A. atomus by A. nepetellae, which may have resulted from undetected partial reproductive compatibility.http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:DFCD7654-5AA5-4E4F-AE48-24377BAACEFE  相似文献

Our knowledge of the systematics and taxonomy of Asian birds has improved much in the last two decades, and the number of recognised species has increased significantly as a result of in‐depth studies using an integrative taxonomic approach. The Sino‐Himalayan mountains harbor a high level of passerine diversity. Several allopatric or parapatric taxa that are currently treated as subspecies of polytypic species within that region are likely to deserve full species status, and thus their taxonomic status needs to be revisited. Based on analyses of multilocus data, vocalizations and morphology, we propose that the white‐tailed rubythroat Calliope pectoralis should be treated as two species, the Himalayan rubythroat C. pectoralis sensu stricto in the Tian Shan and Himalayan mountains, and the Chinese rubythroat C. tschebaiewi in the mountains of southwestern and north‐central China. According to our dating analyses based on mitochondrial loci, these two species diverged approximately 2.2 million yr ago. We further found that C. tschebaiewi was paraphyletic to C. pectoralis sensu stricto in nuclear data, which demonstrates a state of mitonuclear discordance that warrants further work. Our results suggest that geographic changes and glacial cycles in the Pleistocene may have caused allopatric divergence in the C. pectoralis complex. Our study stresses the importance of applying an integrative taxonomy approach to fully unravel the true avian diversity in the Sino‐Himalayan Mountains.  相似文献

The alpha taxonomy of the globally distributed shark genus Squalus has been under intense investigation recently, and many new species have been described over the last decade. However, taxonomic uncertainty remains about several taxa. Without consistent nomenclature and the ability to reliably distinguish between the different Squalus species, basic data collection, downstream conservation and management efforts are seriously compromised. To aid in clarifying the taxonomic status of Squalus species in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean, we assessed species diversity at the molecular level and evaluated the consistency in species identification in the region. Samples from all nominal Squalus species recognized in the above regions were collected in an international effort and sequenced for regions of the mitochondrial COI and ND2 genes. These data were further analysed alongside publicly available sequences, including 19 of the 26 Squalus species globally recognized, to compare the regional genus‐level diversity with that found elsewhere. Our results confirm inconsistent species identification in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Squalus, particularly concerning S. blainville and S. megalops, and reinforce the need to revise the status of S. megalops and S. mitsukurii as they may include several distinct species distributed around the world. The status of S. blainville is also discussed in the light of the current findings and its problematic taxonomic history.  相似文献

Leafcutting ants of the genus Atta are the most conspicuous members of the tribe Attini, the fungus-growing ants. Atta species have long attracted the attention of naturalists, and have since become a common model system for the study of complex insect societies as well as for the study of coevolutionary dynamics due to their numerous interactions with fungi and other microbes. Nevertheless, systematics and taxonomy of the 15 species in the genus Atta have proven challenging, due in part to the extreme levels of worker polymorphism these species display, leading to disagreements about the validity of as many as five different subgenera and calling into question the monophyly of the genus. Here, we use DNA sequence information from fragments of three mitochondrial genes (COI, tRNA leucine and COII) and one nuclear gene (EF1-αF1), totaling 1070 base pairs, to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships of Atta species using maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference techniques. Our results provide support for monophyly of the genus Atta, and suggest that the genus is divided into four monophyletic groups, which correspond to four of the five previously erected Atta subgenera: Atta sensu stricto and Archeatta, each with species composition identical to earlier proposals; Neoatta and Epiatta, with major differences in species composition from earlier proposals. The current geographic ranges of these species suggest that the historical separation of South America from Central and North America has played a role in speciation within this genus.  相似文献

DNA barcodes have great potential to assist in species identification, especially when high taxonomical expertise is required. We investigated the utility of the 5′ mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) region to discriminate between 13 European cicada species. These included all nine species currently recognized under the genus Tettigettalna, from which seven are endemic to the southern Iberian Peninsula. These cicadas have species‐specific male calling songs but are morphologically very similar. Mean COI divergence between congeners ranged from 0.4% to 10.6%, but this gene was proven insufficient to determine species limits within genus Tettigettalna because a barcoding gap was absent for several of its species, that is, the highest intraspecific distance exceeded the lowest interspecific distance. The genetic data conflicted with current taxonomic classification for T. argentata and T. mariae. Neighbour‐joining and Bayesian analyses revealed that T. argentata is geographically structured (clades North and South) and might constitute a species complex together with T. aneabi and T. mariae. The latter diverges very little from the southern clade of T. argentata and shares with it its most common haplotype. T. mariae is often in sympatry with T. argentata but it remains unclear whether introgression or incomplete lineage sorting may be responsible for the sharing of haplotypes. T. helianthemi and T. defauti also show high intraspecific variation that might signal hidden cryptic diversity. These taxonomic conflicts must be re‐evaluated with further studies using additional genes and extensive morphological and acoustic analyses.  相似文献

The fish belonging to Gerreidae are common representatives of the coastal ichthyofauna of the tropics and subtropics of the world. The genus Diapterus has a neotropical distribution and currently includes four species: two in the Atlantic Ocean [Irish mojarra D. auratus Ranzani 1842 and rhombic mojarra D. rhombeus (Cuvier 1829)] and two in the Pacific Ocean [short‐beaked mojarra D. brevirostris (Sauvage 1879) and golden mojarra D. aureolus (Jordan & Gilbert 1882)]. This genus has uncertain taxonomy based on the remarkable and dissimilar morphology of D. aureolus. We evaluated the taxonomy and phylogeny of Diapterus with statistical (canonical discriminant analysis) and phylogenetic analyses (maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference) of geometric morphometric data (relative warps) and molecular data (12Sr RNA, 16Sr RNA, COI and RAG1 sequences). Our results indicate that the genus Diapterus as we currently conceive it is a polyphyletic group: [(Gerres cinereusEucinostomus spp. (D. aureolus – (Eugerres spp. (D. auratus – (D. brevirostris – D. rhombeus)))))]. Therefore, a taxonomic rearrangement is needed. To preserve the monophyly of the group, our proposal is to remove D. aureolus and place it in a new monotypic genus. A neotype is designated for D. aureolus as well as an artificial identification key for the genera and the species treated in this article.  相似文献

Summary   Geissois sensu stricto (i.e. excluding the Australian species of this genus) has 19 species restricted to islands in the south-west Pacific and is the sole group in Cunoniaceae in which the stipules are intrapetiolar (axillary) in the adult foliage. In apical buds, paired opposite stipules are coherent round their margins and are either clearly intrapetiolar in relation to the most distal pair of developed leaves (Type I, most species), or they appear interpetiolar due to the abortion of the pair of leaves associated with them and the failure of the internode proximal to them to elongate (Type II, a few species). Stipules are often accrescent and the largest in the family occur in this group, reaching 10 cm long in some species. The ornithophilous racemose inflorescences of members of this group normally consist of either axillary triads (G. hirsuta only) or apparently simple, unbranched racemes which are ramiflorous or occasionally axillary. However, bract scars on the axes proximal to the flowers show that both types of inflorescence module usually consist of two metamers. The structure of the inflorescences and stipules in Geissois sensu stricto supports the distinction between this group and the Australian species traditionally included in Geissois sensu lato.  相似文献

The marine cave‐dwelling mysid Hemimysis margalefi is distributed over the whole Mediterranean Sea, which contrasts with the poor dispersal capabilities of this brooding species. In addition, underwater marine caves are a highly fragmented habitat which further promotes strong genetic structuring, therefore providing highly informative data on the levels of marine population connectivity across biogeographical regions. This study investigates how habitat and geography have shaped the connectivity network of this poor disperser over the entire Mediterranean Sea through the use of several mitochondrial and nuclear markers. Five deeply divergent lineages were observed among H. margalefi populations resulting from deep phylogeographical breaks, some dating back to the Oligo‐Miocene. Whether looking at the intralineage or interlineage levels, H. margalefi populations present a high genetic diversity and population structuring. This study suggests that the five distinct lineages observed in H. margalefi actually correspond to as many separate cryptic taxa. The nominal species, H. margalefi sensu stricto, corresponds to the westernmost lineage here surveyed from the Alboran Sea to southeastern Italy. Typical genetic breaks such as the Almeria‐Oran Front or the Siculo‐Tunisian Strait do not appear to be influential on the studied loci in H. margalefi sensu stricto. Instead, population structuring appears more complex and subtle than usually found for model species with a pelagic dispersal phase. The remaining four cryptic taxa are all found in the eastern basin, but incomplete lineage sorting is suspected and speciation might still be in process. Present‐day population structure of the different H. margalefi cryptic species appears to result from past vicariance events started in the Oligo‐Miocene and maintained by present‐day coastal topography, water circulation and habitat fragmentation.

Water voles from the genus Arvicola display an amazing ecological versatility, with aquatic and fossorial populations. The Southern water vole (Arvicola sapidus) is largely accepted as a valid species, as well as the newly described Arvicola persicus. In contrast, the taxonomic status and evolutionary relationships within Arvicola amphibiussensu lato had caused a long-standing debate. The phylogenetic relationships among Arvicola were reconstructed using the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Four lineages within A. amphibiuss.l. were identified with good support: Western European, Eurasiatic, Italian, and Turkish lineages. Fossorial and aquatic forms were found together in all well-sampled lineages, evidencing that ecotypes do not correspond to distinct species. However, the Western European lineage mostly includes fossorial forms whereas the Eurasiatic lineage tends to include mostly aquatic forms. A morphometric analysis of skull shape evidenced a convergence of aquatic forms of the Eurasiatic lineage toward the typically aquatic shape of A. sapidus. The fossorial form of the Western European lineage, in contrast, displayed morphological adaptation to tooth-digging behavior, with expanded zygomatic arches and proodont incisors. Fossorial Eurasiatic forms displayed intermediate morphologies. This suggests a plastic component of skull shape variation, combined with a genetic component selected by the dominant ecology in each lineage. Integrating genetic distances and other biological data suggest that the Italian lineage may correspond to an incipient species (Arvicola italicus). The three other lineages most probably correspond to phylogeographic variations of a single species (A. amphibius), encompassing the former A. amphibius, Arvicola terrestris, Arvicola scherman, and Arvicola monticola.  相似文献

Daphnia on the Tibetan Plateau has been little studied, and information on species diversity and biogeography is lacking. Here, we conducted a 4‐year survey using the barcoding fragment of the mitochondrial COI gene to determine the distribution and diversity of Daphnia species found across the Plateau. Our results show that species richness is higher than previously thought, with total described and provisional species number doubling from 5 to 10. Six of the taxonomic units recovered by DNA taxonomy agreed well with morphology, but DNA barcoding distinguished three clades each for the D. longispina (D. galeata, D. dentifera, and D. longispina) and D. pulex (D. pulex, D. cf. tenebrosa, and D. pulicaria) complexes. The sequence divergence between congeneric species varied within a large range, from 9.25% to 30.71%. The endemic D. tibetana was the most common and widespread species, occurring in 12 hyposaline to mesosaline lakes. The lineage of D. longispina is the first confirmed occurrence in west Tibet.  相似文献

Acanthodactylus is a widespread lacertid genus occurring from the Iberian Peninsula and western North Africa to western India including the Middle East, Cyprus, and the Arabian Peninsula. The genus is in dire need of a taxonomic revision, and the phylogenetic relationships amongst and within its species remain unclear. In particular, the taxonomy and relationship of the allopatric, narrow‐ranged Acanthodactylus schreiberi and its close relative, the widespread Acanthodactylus boskianus asper, are poorly understood. We estimated the phylogenetic and phylogeographical structure of A. schreiberi across its distribution range, and evaluated its relationships to A. b. asper, using mitochondrial and nuclear data. The phylogenetic results indicate that both species are paraphyletic, with A. schreiberi nested within A. b. asper, and the subspecies A. schreiberi syriacus nested within a distinct lineage of A. b. asper. We suggest that the group is in need of a taxonomic revision because the identified lineages and genetic diversity are incongruent with the currently recognized taxonomy. We tentatively conclude that A. schreiberi is restricted to Cyprus and Turkey, reduced to a single form, and that the populations in Lebanon and Israel belong to A. b. asper. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Previous studies have indicated the occurrence of nine species of Palaemon in Brazil. However, the extensive variability in their diagnostic characters and the geographic distribution of some species raises doubts about the validity of some taxa, potentially indicating the occurrence of species not yet reported from Brazil or even not described. To solve taxonomic issues with Palaemon species in Brazil, we carried out a multigene analysis by using partial fragments of 16S and COI mitochondrial genes and the nuclear H3. Phylogenetic relationships were inferred by maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference. The external morphology corresponding to the terminal clades obtained in the molecular phylogram was analysed to identify diagnostic characters that allow the recognition of the groups and the correct taxa assignment. The combined analysis of molecular and morphological data confirms the existence of nine species of Palaemon in Brazil, five from the “Palaemon” lineage (P. mercedae and four Palaemon stensu strictoP. argentinus, P. octaviae—first record in Brazil, P. northropi and P. paivai) and four of the “Alaocaris” lineage (P. carteri, P. ivonicus, P. pandaliformis and P. yuna). The possibility of further cryptic speciation is also pointed out. In addition to confirming the validity of the nine species, the results indicate the need for taxonomic adjustments and corresponding changes in the geographic distribution of Palaemon species occurring in Brazil.  相似文献

Evolutionary relationships in the widely distributed velvet worm Peripatopsis balfouri sensu lato species complex were examined using DNA sequence data, gross and SEM morphology. Sequence data were generated for the COI mtDNA and the 18S rRNA loci and analysed using a Bayesian inference approach, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony. Phylogenetic analyses of the combined DNA sequence data revealed that Peripatopsis clavigera specimens from the southern Cape (clade 1) was sister to P. balfouri sensu lato specimens from the Cederberg Mountains (clade 2). Within the main P. balfouri sensu lato species complex, three addition clades could be discerned (clades 3, 4 and 5). The obligatory troglobitic species Peripatopsis alba was equidistant between the Cape Peninsula and adjacent interior (clade 3) and the two Boland and Hottentots Holland Mountains (clades 4 and 5). On the Cape Peninsula, P. stelliporata specimens nested among the sympatric P. balfouri sensu lato specimens. The Cape Peninsula specimens were sister to specimens from Jonkershoek site 1, Kogelberg and Simonsberg. Two Boland clades were retrieved, comprising Du Toit's Kloof, Bain's Kloof and Mitchell's Pass and sister (in clade 4) to specimens from the Boland and adjacent Hottentots Holland Mountains in clade 5. These results revealed complex biogeographic patterning in the P. balfouri sensu lato species complex. The presence of sympatric, yet genetically discrete species pairs at six of the sample localities (Du Toit's Kloof, Simonsberg, Jonkershoek sites 1 and 2, Kogelberg and Landroskop) suggests that there is reproductive isolation between the lineages. Divergence time estimations suggest a Miocene/Pliocene/Pleistocene cladogenesis. A taxonomic revision of the P. balfouri sensu lato species complex was undertaken to stabilize the taxonomy. P. clavigera is monophyletic and retained for the southern Cape specimens, P. balfouri sensu stricto is now confined to the Cape Peninsula and adjacent interior, while P. stelliporata is regarded as a junior synonym of the latter taxon, P. alba is endemic to the Wynberg Cave systems on the Cape Peninsula. Three novel species (Peripatopsis cederbergiensis, sp. n., Peripatopsis bolandi sp. n. and Peripatopsis purpureus, sp. n.) are described.  相似文献

Arion subfuscus sensu lato (s. l.) refers to a cryptic slug species complex that is native to Europe and which, from there, has been introduced into the northeastern U.S. The species complex was detected in California for the first time in 2005 and recently 12 specimens were collected during statewide surveys. The genital morphology of these specimens suggested that only A. subfuscus sensu stricto (s. s.) was present and partial sequences of mitochondrial 16S rDNA (443 bp) showed that they all belonged to a single haplotype of the mitochondrial lineage, S1 sensu Pinceel et al. (Genetica 125: 155–171, 2005). This result was corroborated by a parallel analysis of a 655 bp COI DNA barcode. The 16S rDNA S1 haplotype (S1-03) of the Californian specimens is hitherto known only from the northeastern U.S. Hence, it is likely that populations may have been introduced to California from the northeastern states, rather than directly from the native area of the S1 haplogroup in Europe.  相似文献

A molecular taxonomic study on the north European species of the genus Agathomyia Verrall (Diptera: Platypezidae) is presented. We include molecular phylogenetic analyses based on two fragments of the mtDNA COI and a fragment of the nuclear 28S rDNA genes for both adult and immature stages of Agathomyia spp. The Agathomyia elegantula (Zetterstedt) group taxa were revised based on the newly obtained molecular and morphological data. Two new species belonging to the A. elegantula group were described, Agathomyia alneti Ståhls & Rättel sp.n. and A. shatalkini Ståhls sp.n. Agathomyia boreella (Zetterstedt) and A. scutellaris (Zetterstedt) were resurrected from synonymy of A. elegantula Zetterstedt. The genus Antrodiella Ryvarden & I.Johans was recorded as fungal host for Agathomyia elegantula group species and is a new host fungus genus for Platypezidae and for genus Agathomyia. Antrodiella faginea and A. pallescens were recorded as host fungi for A. boreella, A. pallescens for A. elegantula and A. serpula for A. alneti sp.n. We present identification keys to males and to all hitherto known third‐stage larvae of north European Agathomyia species including digital images, and discuss conservation aspects for these taxa.  相似文献
