Summary Candida, mumps, and streptokinase-streptodornase (SKSD) were administered intradermally to 38 healthy adult volunteers at weeks 0, 2, 4–5, and 14 during two separate trials. Frequent, repetitive testing was used to determine (1) whether responses remained stable; (2) the relationship of erythema to induration; and (3) whether results would change when analyzed by different methods of comparing endpoints.When Candida, mumps, and SKSD were first administered, 63%, 76%, and 88% of the subjects responded with 5 mm induration by 48 h. Although little sex difference was noted for mumps and SKSD responses, more men responded to Candida (P=0.001). Erythema and induration were linearly correlated for Candida and SKSD, but the results were variable for mumps. With frequent repetitive testing, the mean induration arising in response to Canadida increased (P=0.001), as did the number of responses >15 mm (P=0.05). Similarly, the mean mumps-induced induration increased (P=0.01), as did the number of responses >10 mm (P=0.05). The mean SKSD-induced induration increased (P=0.08) in the first trial. During the second trial an SKSD overdosage occurred, which produced SKSD-specific anergy lasting for 25 weeks but not affecting Canadida and mumps responses. All enhanced induration responses decreased toward baseline levels during a 10-week rest period. The graded-response method of data analysis was more sensitive than the positive-negative or mean induration methods for detecting significant induration enhancement. Appropriate controls are needed for meaningful data analysis during repetitive skin testing with these antigens.  相似文献

Laboratory crosses were carried out among three genetically differentiated Los Angeles populations (all located within approximately 15 km) and one San Diego population (approximately 150 km away) of the intertidal copepod Tigriopus californicus. Despite high levels of allozyme differentiation, all crosses produced viable F1 progeny. Most F1 progeny had shorter developmental times and reduced variance in developmental times compared to the parental populations. Only one pair of populations failed to produce viable F2 progeny; when the central Los Angeles population (AB) was crossed to the San Diego (SD) population, most larvae died during the late naupliar stages. Developmental times in the F2 generation of the other Los Angeles × San Diego crosses were typically 40% longer than developmental times of the parental populations. Among the Los Angeles populations, only one cross (and not its reciprocal) showed a similarly large increase in developmental time. Variance in F2 developmental times was greater than the parental variance in 5 of 10 crosses. These results are discussed with regard to the evolution of coadapted gene complexes and population differentiation in T. californicus.  相似文献

Africanized honey bees entered California in 1994 but few accounts of their northward expansion or their frequency relative to European honey bees have been published. We used mitochondrial markers and morphometric analyses to determine the prevalence of Africanized honeybees in San Diego County and their current northward progress in California west of the Sierra Nevada crest. The northernmost African mitotypes detected were approximately 40 km south of Sacramento in California’s central valley. In San Diego County, 65% of foraging honey bee workers carry African mitochondria and the estimated percentage of Africanized workers using morphological measurements is similar (61%). There was no correlation between mitotype and morphology in San Diego County suggesting Africanized bees result from bidirectional hybridization. Seventy percent of feral hives, but only 13% of managed hives, sampled in San Diego County carried the African mitotype indicating that a large fraction of foraging workers in both urban and rural San Diego County are feral. We also found a single nucleotide polymorphism at the DNA barcode locus COI that distinguishes European and African mitotypes. The utility of this marker was confirmed using 401 georeferenced honey bee sequences from the worldwide Barcode of Life Database. Future censuses can determine whether the current range of the Africanized form is stable, patterns of introgression at nuclear loci, and the environmental factors that may limit the northern range of the Africanized honey bee.  相似文献

In coccidioidin skin test surveys among persons of high school age in Saugus, Canoga Park, Banning and Palm Springs areas the average incidence of positive reaction was 15 per cent. Although considerably less than the 68 per cent incidence reported among high school students of Kern County, it is high enough to indicate pockets of relatively high endemicity in Southern California below the San Joaquin Valley.Histoplasmin tests were performed on most of the persons tested with coccidioidin in this survey. The over-all incidence of positive reaction in the group was 7.6 per cent. Most of the subjects with positive reaction to histoplasmin gave a history of having previously lived in some area in the central United States where histoplasmosis is known to be endemic.A few subjects who had positive reaction to coccidioidin tests and who had lived in areas known to be endemic for coccidioidomycosis but not for histoplasmosis, also had positive reaction to histoplasmin. However, the induration produced was always smaller than that caused by the coccidioidin reaction, and there was minimal confusion in interpreting the tests.  相似文献

[(sup14)C]naphthalene and phenanthrene were oxidized to (sup14)CO(inf2) without a detectable lag under strict anaerobic conditions in sediments from San Diego Bay, San Diego, Calif., that were heavily contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) but not in less contaminated sediments. Sulfate reduction was necessary for PAH oxidation. These results suggest that the self-purification capacity of PAH-contaminated sulfate-reducing environments may be greater than previously recognized.  相似文献

We studied variability in the abundance of small individuals of an invasive mussel (Musculista senhousia) across the depth distribution of a native marine angiosperm, eelgrass (Zostera marina). Adult mussels and eelgrass have a disjunct local distribution, each limiting the other in complex ways. To assess whether eelgrass also influenced the distribution of juvenile mussels, we sampled inside and outside eelgrass beds in one site in Mission Bay and two in San Diego Bay, California, USA. We sampled mussels in size classes 0.26–0.50 mm, 0.51–1.00 mm, 1.10–2.00 mm and > 2.00 mm from September 1997 to April 1999. We also monitored gonad development in larger mussels and in situ growth of mussels ≤ 2 mm tagged with the chemical marker calcein. Spatial and temporal variations in mussel abundances were high but seasonal patterns were roughly similar at San Diego Bay sites; very few mussels were found in Mission Bay. Mussels with full gonads were found year‐round in San Diego Bay, as were mussels in the smallest size class (with a large peak in fall and a smaller secondary one in spring), suggesting that many of the smallest mussels represent recruitment. The observation that most, although not all, tagged mussels increased in size provides further support for recruitment. Some of the highest numbers of mussels in the smallest size class were found inside eelgrass beds, indicating that eelgrass does not restrict and may actually enhance the distribution of very small mussels. The disjunct distribution of adult mussels and eelgrass thus is apparently established primarily postrecruitment. M. senhousia is capable of year‐round reproduction, recruitment and growth, and thus is poised to preempt space from eelgrass following any disturbance that results in eelgrass declines, such as habitat fragmentation, eutrophication, or disease.  相似文献

Patterns of continuing education of 244 physicians practicing in San Diego and Imperial Counties were studied by means of an interview questionnaire. An additional 20 internists and general practitioners were observed for one week in order to check the validity of the questionnaire findings.All physicians reported that they engaged in one or more means of continuing education and about three quarters had attended at least one formal course during the preceding three years. Almost all (99 percent) had attended some hospital-based teaching conference, tumor board or professional society meeting during the year preceding interview and 88 percent had attended at least once each month. Physicians in group practice participated more regularly in continuing education than those in solo practice, but no differences in participation were observed between those practicing in the metropolitan area of San Diego and those practicing in the other areas of the two counties. Different patterns of continuing education by specialty are also reported and the attitudes of physicians toward continuing education are described.  相似文献

Since the 1940s, populations of Gray Vireos (Vireo vicinior) in California have collapsed, presumably because of parasitism by Brown‐headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater). In 2012 and 2013, we studied the vireo's nesting ecology to assess factors affecting two of California's largest remaining populations in the chaparral of San Diego County. Nest success was extremely low, with a model‐averaged probability of nest survival of only 0.08 (= 95). More nest failures were due to predation (83%) than to cowbird parasitism (13%). Video‐recording at 30 nests revealed that California Scrub‐Jays (Aphelocoma californica) were the most common nest predator (67%). Of eight variables tested, height of shrubs surrounding the nest had the strongest negative influence on nest survival, but was more strongly correlated with cowbird parasitism than with jay predation. Despite frequent renesting, seasonal productivity was well below the level required to sustain a population, especially in northern San Diego County where we found no Gray Vireos at six of seven sites where they had been present from 1997 to 2001 and where cowbird parasitism was more frequent. The vireo's continuing range collapse contrasts with recent climate‐change models predicting a range expansion, highlighting the importance of demographic studies. Low nest success is likely contributing to population declines in California, and the additive effect of cowbird parasitism suppresses productivity. Conservation of Gray Vireos in California will likely require development of alternative approaches to cowbird and scrub‐jay control appropriate to sites widely scattered in rugged chaparral.  相似文献

Vocal behavior of four pairs of adult Sichuan golden monkeys was studied at the San Diego, Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Francisco zoos between November 1984 and October 1986. Four call types made up 86% (1,357/ 1,578) of vocalizations that occurred during 45 h of tape-recording. All four major vocalization types were made by both sexes. There was, however, significant sexual asymmetry in their production: 82% to 99% of each type was produced by one sex or the other. Frequently, duets developed when an individual male or female responded to the vocalizations of its cagemate. Males vocalized more than did females in each of the four pairs, and males responded vocally to female calls more than twice as frequently.  相似文献

The alpha 1 beta 1 interface of normal and mutated San Diego hemoglobins in their fully liganded form was investigated, through the SH vibrational absorption of beta-112 cysteine, by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The center frequency of this thiol group was significantly shifted in San Diego hemoglobin compared with normal human hemoglobin. Different dimer organization between the two proteins was also revealed by circular dichroism of the heme. These findings agree well with assessment that the alpha 1 beta 1 interface, far from being inert, is involved in the affinity changes of the hemoglobin molecule.  相似文献

Fourteen bonobos (Pan paniscus) from the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Wild Animal Park were focally observed at different times of day for all right, left, and bi-manual behaviors which occurred naturally in the two settings. A total of 36,288 behaviors were recorded. There were 17,762 (49%) right-handed behaviors, 14,080 (39%) left-handed behaviors, and 4,446 (12%) bilateral behaviors. Based onz-scores (p<.05), 11 individuals were significantly right-biased, 2 individuals were significantly left-biased, and 1 was right biased, but not significantly. The aim of this study was to investigate how mood, work time, light exposure, activity, and sleep indices are affected by the differences of latitude and season in healthy volunteers. Twenty-four subjects (38.92±11.32 yrs) in Rochester, Minnesota, USA (latitude 44°1'N) and 30 subjects (47.03±16.32 yrs) in San Diego, California, USA (latitude 32°43'N) completed a 1 yr protocol measuring daily logs including daily work time and sleep diary; the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D); the eight-item atypical subscore of the Structured Interview Guide for the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, Seasonal Affective Disorder version (SIGH-SAD); and actigraphic measures of light exposure and sleep for one-week in each solstice of summer and winter. Higher scores of CES-D (p=0.038) and the eight-item atypical subscore of SIGH-SAD (p=0.009), and longer indoor (p=0.001) and shorter outdoor (p=0.002) work times were observed during winter than summer only in Rochester, with no differences in San Diego. The mesor of light was decreased in both Rochester (p≤0.001) and San Diego (p=0.004) during winter compared to summer, with no differences in the mesors (24 h means) of activity and sleep. The eight-item atypical subscore of SIGH-SAD was significantly negatively correlated with the mesor of light (p=0.034). Sleep indices showed no significant differences between two locales or two seasons. A more prominent depressive mood in Rochester than San Diego during winter can be explained by decreased light exposure of healthy subjects in Rochester. Despite a significant difference of mood and light exposure between the two seasons in Rochester, there were no differences in activity or sleep. Therefore, mood might be more reactive than activity and sleep in the seasonal variation induced by differential light exposure.  相似文献

Intradermal skin tests with a 2TU dose of PPD-RT 23 prepared from M. tuberculosis and 0.1 ug/0.1 ml of PPD-RS 631 from M. xenopi were simultaneously carried out in 378 7-year-old children from two localities in North-Bohemian region's capital Ustí n. Lab., a focus of M. xenopi endemicity repeatedly confirmed since its disclosure in 1980 by positive M. xenopi isolations from humans and public water supply network. A further group 157 children serving as controls was from Prague district 4 where no presence of M. xenopi strains was ever recorded. All of these children had received routine immunization at birth with Czech BCG vaccine. The children from the two endemic localities were found to give a positive 6 mm or greater reaction to M. xenopi mycobacterin in 43.3% and 22.3%, to human tuberculin in 12.8% and 12.6%, respectively. The frequency histogram clearly separated a group of reactors with 8-18 mm indurations from a group of nonreactors showing a skin induration of 4-8 mm. The higher reactivity of this exposed child population was also reflected in a larger proportion of reactions greater to M. xenopi PPD than to human tuberculin antigen: the reactions greater by 1-5 mm accounted, respectively, for 25.1% and 20.6%, reactions greater by 6 mm or more for 23.7% and 15.9%. Among a group of children from Prague district 4, 6.4% had medium-sized and 3.8% large-sized reactions to M. xenopi antigen; the proportion of reactions greater to M. xenopi antigen than to human tuberculin accounted for only 5.1%, reactions greater to tuberculin than to sensitin were here in slight predominance. The evidenced skin sensitization to M. xenopi mycobacterin is suggested to result from the different degrees of exposure to infection by environmental mycobacteria.  相似文献

To visualize long‐term social relationships among 12 gorillas in a captive breeding group at the San Diego Wild Animal Park, San Diego, CA, the multidimensional scaling (MDS) procedure was applied to proximity (within 5 m) values collected in five different periods over 2.5 years. The resulting two‐dimensional representations clearly show that in samples taken during this 2.5‐year period, the silverback male was surrounded by five adult females, while three infant or young juvenile females, gathered in a body, remained between the silverback male and adult females. Some adult females maintained proximity to the silverback male more frequently than other adult females throughout the five periods. Unlike mountain gorillas in the wild, females with dependent offspring did not tend to stay near the silverback male more frequently than other females, and related females did not tend to spend more time near each other than non‐related females. Three older juvenile or young adult males were plotted the furthest from the silverback male, with gradual changes with increasing age. The usefulness of the MDS procedure, which can be used to visualize easily and clearly the social relationships among individuals, is discussed from the viewpoint of the management of breeding groups of captive gorillas. Temperament has been demonstrated clinically to be linked to mental disorders. We aimed to determine the possible role of temperament in mental disorders in a national epidemiologic study. A nationally representative sample of adults (n=1320) was administered the Lebanese-Arabic version of the Temperament Evaluation of the Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A), and the Arabic CIDI 3.0, as part of the LEBANON study. The association among temperaments and DSM-IV mood, anxiety, and impulse control disorders was assessed. The anxious temperament was shown to be a robust predictor of most disorders, especially within the anxiety and depressive clusters. The hyperthymic temperament had a uniquely protective effect on most mental disorders, with the exception of separation anxiety, bipolar, substance abuse and impulse control disorders. These effects were moderated by age and education. Temperaments, previously largely neglected in epidemiologic studies, could play a major role in the origin of mental disorders.  相似文献

No test for assessing cellular immune response in coccidioidomycosis is currently available in the United States. In the present study, we tested 49 healthy subjects living in the coccidioidal endemic region with a 1:55.8 dilution of a single lot of coccidioidin archived since the 1970s. In this group, 23 evaluable subjects demonstrated ≥5 mm of induration at 24, 48 or 72 h, with a mean±SEM maximum induration of 18.4±4.0 mm. The induration results among 14 subjects reactive at 24 h were compared to those from 179 individuals in an historical cohort studied in the 1980s using a reference lot of coccidioidin. Results were within 5% and not significantly different (P=0.924). The maximum induration response of all evaluable subjects correlated significantly with the results of in vitro tests of coccidioidal cellular immunity using supernatant interferon-gamma concentration and CD69 expression on T cells (Spearman rank correlation coefficients 0.69 and 0.68, respectively; P<0.01 for both). These data suggest that archived coccidioidin retains its potency and specificity and that in vitro test of coccidioidal immunity may have utility in the measurement of coccidioidal cellular immunity.  相似文献
