As biological basis for the monitoring programme for the commercially exploited stock(s) of mussels (Mytilus edulis L.) in the Danish Wadden Sea, samples of mussels have been collected regularly since 1986, both from sub-tidal and inter-tidal mussel beds. These samples are the basis for the estimation of total biomass. They also provide data on size frequency distributions, which have been analysed for cohort identification resulting in length at age data, which again have been used for estimating parameters (L and K) for the von Bertalanffy growth equation (VBGE) as well as mortality parameters. By applying these in the Beverton & Holt model, estimates of average biomass and annual production (P) of the mussels have been obtained together with possible fisheries yields from the beds. The growth and mortality parameters and the figures for annual production and P/B are compared with figures from other investigations. These analyses have been the basis for annual assessments of the mussel stocks, which again are used in the current management of mussel fishery in the Danish Wadden Sea.  相似文献

Biological parameters such as age, growth and age (or size) at maturity are vital for stock assessment and management. Aging is essential in yielding such information. However, limited aging studies have been conducted for large tropical pelagic species in the eastern and central tropical Pacific Ocean. The objective of this study is to conduct a length frequency analysis for estimating growth and mortality of bigeye tuna in the eastern and central tropical Pacific Ocean using samples from the Chinese longline fishery during February to November 2006. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters of asymptotic fork length L and growth coefficient k were estimated at L = 207.4 cm fork length, k = 0.23 year-1, and theoretical age at zero length t 0 = −0.40 year. The total mortality rate (Z) was estimated to be 0.60; the fishing mortality rate (F) and the natural mortality rate (M) were 0.25 year-1 and 0.35 year-1, respectively. The exploitation rate (E) was 0.16. This study provides the estimates of growth and mortality rate for bigeye tuna in the eastern and central tropical Pacific Ocean, which can be used as biological input parameters in further stock evaluations in this region. However, age analysis, further validation of the age composition and stock structure are needed for future studies.  相似文献

The African Acacia species A. raddiana is believed to be endangered in the Negev desert of Israel. The ecology of this species is not well understood. The main idea of our study is to learn more about the long-term population dynamics of these trees using snapshot information in the form of size frequency distributions. These distributions are highly condensed indices of population dynamics acting over many years. In this paper, we analyse field data on recruitment, growth, and mortality and use an existing simulation model of the population dynamics of A. raddiana (SAM) to produce contrasting scenarios of these live history processes that are based on the analysed field evidence. The main properties of simulated as well as observed tree size frequency distributions are characterised with Simpson's index of dominance and a new permutation index. Finally, by running the SAM model under the different scenarios, we study the effect of these different processes on simulated size frequency distributions (pattern) and we compare them to size distributions observed in the field, in order to identify the processes acting in the field. Our study confirms rare recruitment events as a major factor shaping tree size frequency distributions and shows that the paucity of recruitment has been a normal feature of A. raddiana in the Negev over many years. Irregular growth, e.g., due to episodic rainfall, showed a moderate influence on size distributions. Finally, the size frequency distributions observed in the Negev reveal the information that, in this harsh environment, mortality of adult A. raddiana is independent of tree size (age).  相似文献

Summary Forest floor populations of Orchesella cincta (L) and Tomocerus minor (Lubbock) (Collembola; Entomobryidae) have been sampled over two generations and from length frequency distributions survivorship curves were constructed for each generation. Size-specific mortality rates were computed from size-specific survivorship data. The results reveal an asymmetrically U-shaped mortality pattern, with disproportionally high juvenile mortality. The pattern changes from one generation to the next, in particular the post-hatching mortality. Evidence from behavioural ecological research on a Collembola-specialized ground beetle is cited in favour of the hypothesis that size-specific mortality patterns are moulded by size-specific predation.  相似文献

Summary White pine (Pinus strobus L.) trees have shoot populations composed of subpopulations of terminal and lateral shoots. I tested whether the subpopulations would show compensatory (increased) growth when separated from each other. Ten-year-old white pine (Pinus strobus L.) trees growing under an oak (Quercus) overstory were untreated or treated in winter by removing either all terminal, or all lateral buds (10 trees per treatment). Growth was compared between control and treated shoot subpopulations. In the 1st year, shoot-length frequency distributions were similar between control and treated subpopulations. There was significant compensatory shoot elongation (mean of 1.5 cm per shoot) in both treated subpopulations. In the 2nd year each subpopulation produced both terminal and lateral shoots. Shoot-length frequency distributions were similar, but shifted toward longer shoots in treated populations. Shoot number, mean length and total shoot length were greater in treated populations. The increased growth in treated subpopulations was due both to differences in parent shoot length and to compensatory shoot production and elongation.  相似文献

Information on biometric and biological parameters of Cancer bellianus Johnson, 1861 (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Cancridae) off the Canary Islands is given. Crabs examined were collected during experimental fishing surveys during 1974–1998. Carapace length, carapace width, total wet weight, sex and ovigerous condition were determined. This species was caught at depths from 153 to 750 m, the deepest ever recorded. Size frequency distributions were assembled and size-weight relationships were estimated by sex. Sex-ratio as a function of size and depth was determined. The size at first maturity was calculated by analysing the relative growth between the carapace length and the left chela width: 103.5 mm CL in males, 101.2 mm CL in females. Ovigerous females, egg size and fecundity estimates are reported apparently for the first time.  相似文献

Summary The genomic distributions of the copia, 297, 412, mdg 1, and B 104 transposable elements have been compared by the Southern technique among two Oregon R and four Canton SDrosophila laboratory lines that have been maintained separately for defined periods of a few years. The heterogeneity of the autoradiographic patterns suggests that multiple transposition events have occurred during the time of separation. Vital statistics such as growth, mortality, and maturity parameters are crucial in understanding the population dynamics of a species. A total of 7 074 Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica) in the lower reach of the Kao‐Ping River, southern Taiwan, were collected with eel tubes in 1998 ~ 2004 and shrimp nets in 2004 ~ 2007. Data from 2004 were excluded due to mixed gear information and escapement of cultured eels; in subsequent years escaped cultured eels were identified and excluded from analyses. The estimated asymptotic length in the von Bertalanffy growth function (84.5–110 cm) was smaller, while the Brody growth parameter (0.30–0.44 year?1) was higher using electronic length frequency analysis (ELEFAN) than when using Shepherd’s length composition analysis (SLCA). The total instantaneous mortality rate (Z) was around 1 for periods 1998–2003 and 2 year?1 for 2005–2007 using length‐converted catch curves. The 95% confidence intervals of Z did not overlap for two of the periods, suggesting that the mortality rates were significantly higher during 2005–2007, possibly due to the introduction of shrimp nets. The maturity function differed significantly between sexes, indicating that females become silver eels at a larger size. The Japanese eels in the lower reach of the Kao‐Ping River were likely heavily exploited, thus management and conservation actions are strongly recommended.  相似文献

Concern over passage of sturgeon barriers, has focused attention on fishway design that accommodates its swimming performance. In order to evaluate swimming performance, regarding fish ladder type partial barriers, wild adult sturgeons, Acipenser transmontanus; 121–76m fork length, were captured in the San Francisco Bay Estuary and Yolo Bypass toe drain. Hydrodynamic forces and kinematic parameters for swimming performance data were collected in a laboratory flume under three flow conditions through barriers and ramp. The experiments were conducted in a 24.4 m long, 2.1 m wide, and 1.62 m deep aluminum channel. Two geometric configurations of the laboratory model were designed based on channel characteristics that have been identified in natural river systems. At a given swimming speed and fish size, the highest guidance efficiencies of successful white sturgeon passage as a function of flow depth, flow velocity, turbulence intensity, Reynolds number, Froude number and shear velocity observed in the steady flow condition, tested with the horizontal ramp structure, occurred at an approach velocity of 0.33 ms-1. The guidance efficiency of successful sturgeon passage increased both with increasing flow velocity and Froude number, and decreased both with the flow depth and the turbulence intensity. This study also provides evidence that tail beat frequency increases significantly with swimming speed, but tail beat frequency decreases with fish total length. Stride length increases both with swimming speed and fish total length. The importance of unsteady forces is expressed by the reduced frequency both with swimming speed and fish total length. Regression analysis indicates that swimming kinematic variables are explained by the swimming speed, the reduced frequency and the fish total length. The results emphasize the importance of fish ladder type patchiness when a fishway is designed for the passage of sturgeon.  相似文献

Numerous diseases in benthic marine organisms have been recognized over the last decade. Here, a new disease (pathogen unknown) is described and quantified in space and time for Palythoa caribaeorum (Cnidaria, Zoanthidea) populations on the São Paulo coast, Brazil (23° S). The degree of environmental stress (moderate vs. high), depth and temporal variation (seasons, years) on the frequency of the disease was assessed by monitoring plots at two sites: Ponta Recife (continent) and Praia Portinho (São Sebastião island), and at two depths per site (0.5–1.5 m and 2.5–4 m). The disease spread outward from within the colony in a circular pattern. A transverse section extending from normal to diseased tissue showed a progression from normal polyps to pale, swollen polyps, followed by remnant spicule-like structures, and finally fine black matter and bare substratum in the middle of the lesion. The disease occurred in one or more portions of the colony simultaneously. Disease frequency and total area infected increased significantly with colony size. Generally, the disease affected 5% of the total colony area, and occurred when gonad development was maximal. Therefore, 20.5% (n = 306), and 14.6% (n = 578) of the population was infected in two consecutive years, respectively. Disease exhibited higher rates during summer (tourist season) and fall, and decreased significantly in the winter with the presence of cool water. Factors associated with the increased instance of disease during the summer were higher temperatures, precipitation and sewage; the opposite was noted in the winter. Disease frequency varied significantly between years, seasons, sites and depths. Colonies exhibited higher disease frequency in Ponta Recife characterized by high levels of sedimentation, increased turbidity and low levels of incident light with respect to Praia Portinho. Colonies in shallow water exhibited greater frequency of disease compared to those in deeper water. Physiological stress, low energy input, energy expenditure and energy re-allocation may increase the susceptibility of P. caribaeorum colonies to disease. It is suggested that this disease may play an important role in the life history of P. caribaeorumbecause of its influence on partial mortality, colony area, population size structure, reproduction and ultimately fitness. This represents the first report of disease-related mortality in reef zoanthids of the Southwestern Atlantic.  相似文献

The distribution and population structure of the shortnose green eye, Chlorophthalmus agassizi, were studied in the Greek Ionian Sea using data collected during experimental trawl surveys carried out from December 1996 to November 1997. The length–frequency distribution ranged between 45 and 201 mm total length (TL). The significant increase in average size linked with depth has been observed, supporting the general ‘bigger‐deeper’ phenomenon. Specifically, 1528 individuals were measured in the 300–400 m depth zone with a mean TL = 101 mm, 2351 individuals in the 400–500 m depth zone with a mean TL = 132 mm and 1889 individuals in the 500–600 depth zone with a mean TL = 145 mm. Age and growth of the population were determined by otolith readings. Twelve age groups were identified. The von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF) parameters were L=202.22 mm, K=0.20 and to=?1.6 years. Natural mortality was estimated at 0.285 per year, while total mortality was estimated at 0.65. The reproductive period of C. agassizi extends from spring to autumn, with greater activity in the summer.  相似文献

A seminal study was conducted in which the population dynamics (growth, mortality and recruitment) of the mudskipper (Periophthalmus papilio) in the Cross River, Nigeria, was elucidated for the first time using length frequency data and the ELEFAN software. The allometric relationship was: Weight=0.012(Length)2.940, n=415, r2=0.939, P <0.0005. The seasonalized Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L=19.39 cm, K=0.51 y–1, C=0.3, and WP=0.4. The instantaneous total mortality coefficient Z was 2.208 y–1 while the instantaneous natural mortality coefficient was 1.341 y–1. The instantaneous fishing mortality coefficient of 0.867 y–1 yielded the expectedly low exploitation rate E of 0.393. Our estimate shows that the species could reach an average maximum life span of about 6 years in the Cross River system. These results are used in quantitative elucidation of the state of exploitation of the population and will serve as input for the proper and scientific management of the fish resource.Alfred Wegener Institute Contribution nr. 1090.  相似文献

近年,欧洲和北美地区相继出现蜜蜂蜂群崩溃(Colony Collapse Disorder, CCD)现象,蜂业科学家在世界范围内开展蜜蜂蜂群损失情况调查与分析。基于此,探讨近4年我国主要西方蜜蜂饲养省份蜂群损失情况,并对损失量、损失原因进行分析。研究采用欧盟政府间合作框架(COST)下项目- CoLoss (Prevention of honey bee COlony LOSSes)项目组提供的国际统一的标准调查表格,利用R语言在RStudio环境下开展全部的统计分析工作,采用广义线性混合模型分析调查数据的相关性及因变量为非正态分布的非独立数据。调查我国12 个主要西方蜜蜂饲养省份的蜂群越冬死亡损失情况。2009-2013 年蜂群平均损失率为8.9%,损失比例同比低于欧洲和北美国家和地区的蜂群损失率,在可接受范围内。利用广义线性混合模型分析,显著影响蜜蜂蜂群损失的因素有:巢脾使用时间及蜂王因素。我国蜂群损失率较低,大部分损失症状不属于CCD。CCD现象在我国尚未确认发生。加强蜂螨及其他病害的防治工作,增加更新巢脾频率,监控蜂王在蜂群中的表现及增加换王次数等可以有效控制蜂群越冬损失率。结果对明确我国蜂群是否受蜜蜂蜂群崩溃症状现象影响提出了明确的解释,对蜂群损失的防控提供重要的指导建议。  相似文献

Methods for the production and utilisation of haploids have been developed for a range of crop plants. Genetical and environmental factors are known to influence both the rate of haploid induction and the mode of regeneration. Investigations designed to examine the parameters that influence haploid production from anthers are usually based on the overall percentage of responding anthers. Previous studies have rarely taken into account the frequency or distribution of anther culture response within a potato flower. In this paper the binomial, poisson and multiplicative binomial distributions are used for the first time to describe the distribution of anther culture response within a Solanum tuberosum flower.  相似文献

The age of glass eels arriving at the European coasts is estimated by different authors to range from 3/4 to 3+years; some of these estimates are based on counts of “daily rings”. The present study reviews published data on North Atlantic length frequency distributions. The only years for which larvae samples are available from the spawning area to the European continental slope are 1979 and, to a certain extent, also 1922. In the spring of both years, length frequency distributions exhibited two distinct maxima which are considered to belong to the AG 0 (mean lengths 12 and 18 mm for 1979 and 1922, respectively) and the AG I (47 and 44 mm). In addition, a third, less distinct maximum is visible and the existence of an AG II must be considered. Growth during the first year of life is calculated using the means of total lengths of sufficiently large samples, collected with progressing season, of the years 1920, 21, 22, 79, 81. From the resulting linear regressions forAnguilla anguilla until the beginning of winter, a daily length increase of 0.15 mm was estimated. Growth ofA. rostrata was faster (0.22 mm·day−1) Daily length increase ofA. anguilla in winter was only 0.03 mm; during a possible second summer 0.06–0.09 mm·day−1 and during a possible third summer considerably less. There is a length increase of the European eel larvae from south to north, known also from glass eels, which makes evaluation of length increase from west to east even more difficult. A higher age of glass eels in the north than in the south is therefore likely.  相似文献

I conducted the first long- term study of the life history patterns of Propithecus diadema edwardsi—Milne- Edward’s sifaka— in the rain forests of southeastern Madagascar, beginning in 1986. I report behavioral observations on a total of 33 individuals from three groups over a 9- year span. We captured,marked, and released 21 individuals. Individual group size ranged from three to nine sifakas. Two breeding females lived in groups I and II until 1993. A newly formed group (III) had one breeding female. Age at first reproduction is 4 years for females and 5 years for males. Gestation length is 179 days (n =2). Most births occurred in June (n = 17), but infants were also born in May (n = 2) and July (n =2). Nine of 21 (43%) infants born died before the age of 1 year, and 15 (67%) died before the age of reproduction. One female bred in her natal group after the death of the resident male and the immigration of an adult male. Another two females disappeared at 4 and 5 years of age;they could have emigrated or died. All 5- to- 6- year- old males (n = 4) have emigrated from their natal groups to adjacent groups. Two have committed infanticide. Five or more individuals were killed by Cryptoprocta ferox.Despite high mortality and offspring dispersal, the number of individuals in the two main groups remained nearly the same over the 9- year study.  相似文献

Copy number variants (CNVs) represent a significant source of genetic variation in the human genome and have been implicated in numerous diseases and complex traits. To date, only a few studies have investigated the role of CNVs in human lifespan. To investigate the impact of CNVs on prospective mortality at the extreme end of life, where the genetic component of lifespan appears most profound, we analyzed genomewide CNV data in 603 Danish nonagenarians and centenarians (mean age 96.9 years, range 90.0–102.5 years). Replication was performed in 500 long‐lived individuals from the Leiden Longevity Study (mean age 93.2 years, range 88.9–103.4 years). First, we assessed the association between the CNV burden of each individual (the number of CNVs, the average CNV length, and the total CNV length) and mortality and found a significant increase in mortality per 10 kb increase in the average CNV length, both for all CNVs (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.024, P = 0.002) and for duplications (HR = 1.011, P = 0.005), as well as per 100 kb increase in the total length of deletions (HR = 1.009, P = 0.0005). Next, we assessed the relation between specific deletions and duplications and mortality. Although no genome–wide significant associations were discovered, we identified six deletions and one duplication that showed consistent association with mortality in both or either of the sexes across both study populations. These results indicate that the genome–wide CNV burden, specifically the average CNV length and the total CNV length, associates with higher mortality in long‐lived individuals.  相似文献

Monotypic stands of reed canary grass, Phalaris arundinacea, replace native wetland vegetation where stormwater runoff alters hydrologic conditions, nutrient inflows, and sedimentation rates. We asked if different hydrologic conditions could explain the dominance of Phalaris and/or loss of the native grass, Spartina pectinata, and we compared the growth of each species alone and together under four hydroperiods (varying inundation frequency and duration) each at two water depths (surface saturation and flooding to 15 cm). When grown alone, aboveground biomass was similar for the two species, but Phalaris produced twice the stem length of Spartina via its low tissue density. Per unit biomass, Phalaris distributed its leaves over a larger canopy volume. Flooding reduced belowground biomass and increased total shoot length and shoot:root biomass of each species. Phalaris produced the most biomass, shoots, and total shoot length when wetter and drier conditions alternated weekly, while Spartina grew best with prolonged (4-week) inundation. When grown with Spartina, Phalaris changed its morphology by increasing its total shoot length:biomass ratio by 50%. However, ratios of Spartina:Phalaris aboveground biomass, shoot number, and total shoot length in two-species pots were not significantly affected by water depth or hydroperiod. We conclude that two plant attributes facilitate Phalaris' dominance of wetlands: its high ratio of total shoot length:biomass and its adaptable morphology (characterized herein as increased total shoot length:biomass when grown with Spartina).  相似文献

The contribution of slippage-like processes to genome evolution   总被引:19,自引:0,他引:19  
Simple sequences present in long (>30 kb) sequences representative of the single-copy genome of five species (Homo sapiens, Caenorhabditis elegans Saccharomyces cerevisiae, E. coli, and Mycobacterium leprae) have been analyzed. A close relationship was observed between genome size and the overall level of sequence repetition. This suggested that the incorporation of simple sequences had accompanied increases of genome size during evolution. Densities of simple sequence motifs were higher in noncoding regions than in coding regions in eukaryotes but not in eubacteria. All five genomes showed very biased frequency distributions of simple sequence motifs in all species, particularly in eukaryotes where AAA and TTT predominated. Interspecific comparisons showed that noncoding sequences in eukaryotes showed highly significantly similar frequency distributions of simple sequence motifs but this was not true of coding sequences. ANOVA of the frequency distributions of simple sequence motifs indicated strong contributions from motif base composition and repeat unit length, but much of the variation remained unexplained by these parameters. The sequence composition of simple sequences therefore appears to reflect both underlying sequence biases in slippage-like processes and the action of selection. Frequency distributions of simple sequence motifs in coding sequences correlated weakly or not at all with those in noncoding sequences. Selection on coding sequences to eliminate undesirable sequences may therefore have been strong, particularly in the human lineage.  相似文献

Commercial fishery landings of the black scabbardfish, Aphanopus carbo, from the Madeira mid‐water drifting longline fleet (northeastern Atlantic) were studied for 2 years within a Portuguese government programme for fishing management. The process noted that 20% of the total catch corresponded to the intermediate scabbardfish, Aphanopus intermedius. Length‐frequency distribution, and age, growth and reproduction of both species were analysed and compared. The results revealed significant differences in age and growth in influencing the length‐frequency distributions. Intermediate scabbardfish attained the largest size (148 cm TL) and age (15 years). However, the two species had similar reproductive strategies. According to data published on A. carbo in this region, it is thought to be very likely that previous studies unintentionally mixed both species together in their analyses.  相似文献
