Nest box choice experiments were carried out outside the breeding season on adult silver and blue fox vixens with no previous permanent nest box experience. Nest boxes were varied in height of placement, number of rooms, presence of entrance room or platform and light conditions. Only one parameter was varied in any one experiment. Both fox species clearly preferred an elevated multi-room nest box; while silver foxes showed preference for boxes supplied with a platform, blue foxes preferred boxes with an entrance room. There was no significant box preference with respect to light conditions. The possible welfare implications of the preferences are discussed.  相似文献

The present study was designed to measure the use of various, simultaneously available resources in a complex housing environment in juvenile blue foxes. Twelve blue fox sibling (male–female) pairs were housed in two-section experimental cages from the age of 8 weeks until the age of 7 months (from June to December). Each experimental cage was furnished with two platforms, a nest box, a sand box and a wooden block. This housing set-up provided the foxes with social contact, and an opportunity for oral manipulation, scratching and nesting, as well as the choice of staying on a solid floor material or on an elevated location. The foxes’ behaviour was recorded at three time points during autumn (September, November and December). The foxes used all available resources. The most utilised resource was the nest box, possibly because it could be utilised in several ways (as a shelter, an elevated location, an object for scratching and for oral manipulation). The foxes also stayed more in the cage section containing the nest box than in the cage section containing a sand box. The foxes rested much on the cage floor, but they also used the interior of the nest box and elevated locations for resting. Social contact often occurred during resting. Thus, the nest box and elevated location, in conjunction with social contact seem to be valuable while resting. While active, the foxes utilised the cage floor and roof of the nest box instead of the platforms. Scratching, digging and an interaction with the wooden block were seldom observed. Activity occurred mainly on the ‘empty’ cage area. In conclusion, all studied resources provided blue foxes with a distinct value, as they all were used in the complex housing environment. The nest box is used most and for most variable behaviours.  相似文献

Specific protocols need to be developed that take into consideration the requirements of silver foxes. This study was designed to investigate the reproduction of 26 pairs of silver foxes (Vulpes vulpes). Reproduction parameters (breeding season, age at puberty, fecundity and fertility) of the foxes were examined under experimental conditions, and new techniques to optimize fox breeding were assessed. Staining of the vaginal smears with the double Harris-Schorr stain allowed for the precise detection of estrus and proved to be more reliable than simply measuring vaginal resistance. Ultrasonography was demonstrated to be useful for pregnancy diagnosis and prediction of parturition. Results demonstrate that the methods reported in this paper are easily applicable to similar studies carried out on small groups of animals within the framework of fox animal experimentation.  相似文献

The structure of guard hairs was analyzed in the mottling mutants of silver foxes. The mottling mutation occurred in the population of silver foxes which has been subjected to domestication. Hairs from the mottling areas were shown to have the following distinctions from silvery-black hairs: the lack of clear grana-shaft separation, a lesser thickness and length, another shape and pattern of guard-hair scales, another thickness ratio between cortical and medullar layers, a lesser number of melanocytes in hair bulbs, and a lesser number of dendritic processes in melanocytes. Putative mechanisms underlying the phenotypic effect of the mutant gene that controls mottling are suggested.  相似文献

According to present acts and regulations, farmed foxes shall have a gnawing or other enrichment object in their cages. However, research on the welfare effects of gnawing objects has been scarce. We assessed physiology and health, that is weight development, urinary cortisol-creatinine ratio, serum cortisol level after adrenocorticotropic hormone administration, internal organ masses and incidence of gastric ulcerations as well as dental and overall oral health, in pair-housed juvenile blue foxes that were housed either with or without a possibility to interact with bones (cattle femur) during their growing season (July to December). The results show that the physiological effects of the possibility to interact with bones were either non-significant or suggested that competition for bones may jeopardize the welfare of subordinate individuals. However, the results clearly show that gnawing bones are beneficial for the dental health of farmed foxes.  相似文献

In the period March 1983 - March 1984 a parasitological survey was carried out on 103 foxes killed in the Forli province (Italy). The parasites identified were: Toxocara canis (45.6%); Uncinaria stenocephala (14.6%); Mesocestoides lineatus (9.7%); Dipylidium caninum (2.9%); Taenia crassiceps (2.9%); Trichuris vulpis (2.9%). Out of all the cestodes found in 7 animals the authors identified only genus Taenia since their preservation conditions were not optimal. Other 13 subjects contained many cestodes similar to T. hydatigena, but considerably shorter in the mean length (20 cm vs 200). In a fecal sample the authors found a species of coccidium whose features do not correspond to any of those described in foxes, therefore it was called Eimeria sp. Finally, the autopsies' results were compared with coprological ones in order to asses their reliability.  相似文献

Skin, lymph node (popliteal), and bone marrow samples were collected from 50 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from May 2004 to May 2005 in southern Italy. Samples were tested for Leishmania infantum by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The parasite was detected by PCR from 20 of 50 (40%) fox carcasses. All 20 positive cases were PCR-positive from lymph node and bone marrow samples, whereas 17 of 20 positive cases were PCR-positive from skin samples. Infection status was not related to age or sex. This is the first report of leishmaniasis in red foxes in Italy based on PCR results, and these results reinforce the assumption that this wild canid can serve as a reservoir for Leishmania.  相似文献

Surgical embryo transfer in the silver fox was investigated as part of a larger project concerning the conservation of endangered canine species using modern artificial reproduction techniques with the farmed fox as a model. The animals were chosen on the basis of synchrony in natural oestrus. The timing of ovulation and artificial insemination was determined by measuring electrical resistance in the vagina. Twenty-nine embryos were flushed from eight humanely killed donor females and transferred surgically into the uteri of eight recipients. One recipient female gave birth to two male pups 47 days after the transfer of four expanded blastocysts and one embryo at the 16-cell stage derived from a donor female flushed 10 days after artificial insemination.  相似文献

The activity patterns of red foxes ( Vulpes vulpes L.) living and breeding in urban areas of Oxford, and the interactions between individuals, were analysed from detailed radio-tracking data on 17 adults. Foxes were nocturnal and active during the night for a mean of 6h 52min min, irrespective of the time of year. The number of active/resting periods increased in autumn and winter, and in winter and spring the night was characteristically divided into several short cycles of activity of 2–2 1/2 h each, interspersed with similar periods of rest. The foxes occupied mutually exclusive group ranges and group members remained within 50m of each other for up to one-third of the time spent active at night. The implications of fox spatial relationships for rabies transmission are discussed.  相似文献

This study was designed to evaluate the enrichment value of a wooden block (30 cm long×4 cm in diameter) and straw for growing farm-bred male blue foxes (Alopex lagopus). Comparisons were made between animals provided with these enrichments at 7 weeks and 15 weeks of age. Various behavioural, physiological, and haematological variables as well as fur and teeth characteristics were assessed. The foxes showed significantly higher motivation to interact with the block than with the straw. The novelty response to block manipulation was higher when the block was given to foxes at 15 weeks than at 7 weeks of age. In straw groups no actual age effect was observed. Both the wooden block and the straw appeared to stimulate particularly the occurrence of play behaviour, which can be considered an indicator of good welfare. Significant differences were not found between the experimental groups in the novel object (ball) in-cage test. However, a slight tendency for increased explorative activity and shorter latency to object sniffing in the open field test were evident in the block animals. The wooden block was found effectively to prevent the accumulation of dental plaque and development of hypertrophia gingiva. However, both the block and the straw markedly increased the incidence of hyperaemia in the mucous membrane of the stomach and intestine. This may explain the lower weight development in these groups than in the controls. Significant differences were not found between the experimental groups in blood screen (haemoglobin, white blood cells, red blood cells, haematocrit) or in the cortisol:creatinine ratio analysed from 24-h urine. The body-weight-related adrenal weight, however, tended to be lowest in the block animals. Furthermore, the presence of a wooden block in a cage significantly reduced the amount of oral stereotypies during the latter part of the growing season. Significant differences did not exist in economically important fur characteristics (quality, mass, cover). It is suggested that further studies on alternative chewing objects should be conducted before introducing such environmental enrichments into farming practice. Electronic Publication  相似文献

The foxes at Novosibirsk, Russia, are the only population of domesticated foxes in the world. These domesticated foxes originated from farm-bred silver foxes (Vulpes vulpes), whose genetic source is unknown. In this study we examined the origin of the domesticated strain of foxes and two other farm-bred fox populations (aggressive and unselected) maintained in Novosibirsk. To identify the phylogenetic origin of these populations we sequenced two regions of mtDNA, cytochrome b and D-loop, from 24 Novosibirsk foxes (8 foxes from each population) and compared them with corresponding sequences of native red foxes from Europe, Asia, Alaska and Western Canada, Eastern Canada, and the Western Mountains of the USA. We identified seven cytochrome b - D-loop haplotypes in Novosibirsk populations, four of which were previously observed in Eastern North America. The three remaining haplotypes differed by one or two base change from the most common haplotype in Eastern Canada. Φ(ST) analysis showed significant differentiation between Novosibirsk populations and red fox populations from all geographic regions except Eastern Canada. No haplotypes of Eurasian origin were identified in the Novosibirsk populations. These results are consistent with historical records indicating that the original breeding stock of farm-bred foxes originated from Prince Edward Island, Canada. Mitochondrial DNA data together with historical records indicate two stages in the selection of domesticated foxes: the first includes captive breeding for ~50 years with unconscious selection for behaviour; the second corresponds to over 50 further years of intensive selection for tame behaviour.  相似文献

Red foxes and raccoon dogs are hosts for a wide range of parasites including important zoonotic helminths. The raccoon dog has recently invaded into Europe from the east. The contribution of this exotic species to the epidemiology of parasitic diseases, particularly parasitic zoonoses is unknown. The helminth fauna and the abundance of helminth infections were determined in 310 carcasses of hunted red foxes and 99 of raccoon dogs from Lithuania. Both species were highly infected with Alaria alata (94·8% and 96·5% respectively) and Trichinella spp. (46·6% and 29·3%). High and significantly different prevalences in foxes and raccoon dogs were found for Eucoleus aerophilus (97·1% and 30·2% respectively), Crenosoma vulpis (53·8% and 15·1%), Capillaria plica (93·3% and 11·3%), C. putorii (29·4% and 51·5%), Toxocara canis (40·5% and 17·6%) and Uncinaria stenocephala (76·9% and 98·8%). The prevalences of the rodent-transmitted cestodes Echinococcus multilocularis, Taenia polyacantha, T. crassiceps and Mesocestoides spp. were significantly higher in foxes than in raccoon dogs. The abundances of E. multilocularis, Mesocestoides, Taenia, C. plica and E. aerophilus were higher in foxes than those in raccoon dogs. A. alata, U. stenocephala, C. putorii and Echinostomatidae had higher abundances in raccoon dogs. The difference in prevalence and abundance of helminths in both animals may reflect differences in host ecology and susceptibility. The data are consistent with red foxes playing a more important role than raccoon dogs in the transmission of E. multilocularis in Lithuania.  相似文献

A combination of xylazine hydrochloride-ketamine hydrochloride was used to immobilize 83 wild red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) (15 pups and 68 adults) at Do?ana National Park (Spain). Mean ketamine hydrochloride doses were 17.1 mg/kg (SE = 1.53) and 12.3 mg/kg (SE = 0.4) for pups and adults, respectively, and mean xylazine hydrochloride doses for the same groups were 6.2 mg/kg (SE = 0.63) and 4.7 mg/kg (SE = 0.14), respectively. Mean induction times and first reaction times were 1.6 minutes and 22.5 minutes for pups and 3.8 minutes and 39.4 minutes for adults, respectively. Recommended doses for wild adult foxes of unknown weight are 75 mg of ketamine hydrochloride and 20 mg of xylazine hydrochloride.  相似文献

Six silver fox males were exposed to short days (6L:18D) from February, when the testes were fully developed, until June 1986 (Group 6L). Eight males maintained in natural daylight served as controls (Group N). Histological sections from the testes of 2 males in Group 6L killed in June indicated full spermatogenic activity. Three blue fox vixens inseminated the following year with semen collected and frozen in June from 3 males in Group 6L failed to produce litters. One possible explanation for the reproductive failures could have been that the high environmental temperatures in June influenced semen quality. There was no significant difference (P greater than 0.05) in LH release in response to GnRH stimulation in June, but testosterone response to LH release was significantly higher (P less than 0.01) in animals subjected to a restricted photoperiod, demonstrating that testicular testosterone production was maintained longer than in control animals. Two males in Group 6L were retained in 6L:18D from June until December 1986 and then exposed to natural daylight until the end of the study in May 1987 (Group 6L:6L:N). These males started to shed their winter coat and showed clinical signs of testicular regression in December, i.e. after approximately 11 months exposure to 6L:18D. The 2 remaining males in Group 6L were moved to cages with natural daylight in June 1986, where they were kept until the end of the experiment (Group 6L: N:N). These males displayed testicular regression soon after the change in photoperiod but maintained their capacity for testicular redevelopment during the following breeding season.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
