The liver and gills of five flounder species (Pleuronectes obscurus, P. punctatissimus, P. yokahamae, P. herzensteini, and Platichthys stellatus) from Sivuch'ya Bight were histologically studied. Specimens of all species were characterized by a wide spectrum of histomorphological changes. The proportions of most specific pathologies in P. obscurusfrom Sivuch'ya Bight were estimated. The pathologies comprised two major groups: those of the gills (edema and fusion of the respiratory lamellae; lifting and hyperplasia of the respiratory epithelium; vacuolization of the epithelium cells; and the presence of clavate lamellae, aneurysmal areas, and parasites) and those of the liver (vacuolization of the hepatocytes, aneurysms, necrosis of the parenchyma tissue, pathologies of the hepatocyte nuclei, pigment accumulation, and an increase in the number and size of melanomacrophage centers). The estimated proportions of pathological changes were compared with those observed in P. obscurusspecimens from the most contaminated area of Amurskii Bay. In both Sivuch'ya Bight and Amurskii Bay, the proportion of fish with various pathologies was high. The comparison of pathological changes in the gills and liver of P. obscurusand P. stellatusfrom Sivuch'ya Bight showed that, in terms of many parameters, the former species is more sensitive to pollution of the marine environment than the latter. Pathomorphological changes in the organs of the flounders studied are apparently caused by chronic pollutant action and suggest that the fish of both areas are in a damaged state.  相似文献

The state of the interrenal gland was studied in plaices Pleuronectes pinnifasciatus and P. obscurus from two stations in Amurskii Bay (Sea of Japan, coastal zone of the city of Vladivostok), differing in the level and character of anthropogenic pollution. The individuals captured at the station with high technogenic pollution had black greasy spots on the belly and a specific odor. Despite these facts, the characteristics used to evaluate stress activation of the interrenal tissue (number of cells per unit area of glandular epithelium and the volume of their nuclei), were similar in fishes from both stations.  相似文献

The Neotropical armoured catfish Corydoras paleatus is a facultative air-breathing teleost commonly exported as ornamental fish. In this species, air breathing enables it to survive and inhabit freshwater environments with low oxygen levels. Therefore, it is important to analyse the gills from a morphological aspect and its dimensions in relation to body mass with reference to aquatic respiration. For that, the gills were analysed using a stereoscopic microscope for morphometric studies, and structural and ultrastructural studies were carried out to compare the four branchial arches. Furthermore, two immunohistochemical techniques were used to locate and identify the presence of a Na+/K+ pump. The characterization of the potential for cell proliferation of this organ was assessed using an anti-PCNA antibody. The results show that gills of C. paleatus present some characteristics related to its diet and lifestyle, such as the limited development of gill rakers and the abundance of taste buds. In addition, other special features associated with the environment and bimodal breathing were observed: scarce and absent mucous cells (MCs) in the gill filaments and branchial lamellae, respectively, and the localization of mitochondria-rich cells (MRCs) covering the basal third of the branchial lamellae, which reduces the gill respiratory area. A peculiar finding in the gill epithelium of this armoured catfish was the presence of mononuclear cells with sarcomeres similar to myoid cells, whose functional importance should be determined in future studies. Finally, in C. paleatus, the interlamellar space of gill filaments is an important site for cell turnover and ionoregulation; the latter function is also performed by the branchial lamellae.  相似文献

Mitochondria-rich cells in Antarctic fish gills   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
We used transmission and scanning electron microscopy and an antibody to the inner mitochondrial membrane to study the presence and localisation of mitochondria-rich cells in the gills of two Antarctic fishes, Chionodraco hamatus (Channichthyidae) and Trematomus bernacchii (Nototheniidae). The general morphology of the gills in the two species was slightly different: in T. bernacchii the filament and secondary lamellae were short and thicker, and mitochondria-rich cells were less numerous than in C. hamatus. In the two species the mitochondria-rich cells, distributed in the secondary and primary epithelium, were of the same morphological type, similar to the α-chloride cells of temperate seawater teleosts. The study was carried out to compare the mitochondria-rich cells of Antarctic fishes to the chloride cells of temperate marine teleosts. Immunolocalisation, using a specific antibody to the α-subunit of Na+/K+-ATPase, was observed in numerous epithelial cells in the interlamellar epithelium and on the secondary lamellae, suggesting an active sodium chloride secretion. We studied the fouling of piers and quays in Amurskii and Pos’et bays, the Sea of Japan. The main fouling communities and groupings were identified. They were usually dominated by bivalves, the musselMytilus trossulus and the oysterCrassostrea gigas. The exotic speciesBalanus improvisus was found to naturalize in the fouling on the hydrotechnical structures of the Amurskii Bay. The qualitative composition of the fouling of the structures examined was compared using cluster analysis.  相似文献

The livers of six flatfish species from Sivuch'ya Bight were examined histologically for the presence of neoplastic lesions. Out of 120 fish studied, hepatic tumors were found in two individuals: the black plaice Pleuronectes obscurusand the longsnout flounderPleuronectes punctatissimus.Based on presence of tissue and cellular atypism, tumor pearls surrounded by squamous cells, and absence of mucous secretion, the neoplasm in P. punctatissimuswas classified as squamous cell carcinoma. Abnormal growth of fibrous stroma suggests a scirrhous variant of carcinoma. Tumor in P. obscuruswas classified as a hepatocellular adenoma. This is the first information on liver tumors in flatfishes of Sivuch'ya Bight.  相似文献

The tissue damage induced by various organic pollutants in aquatic animals is well documented, but there is a dearth of information relating to the histological alterations induced by copper in the spiny lobster. In the present study, intermoult juveniles of the spiny lobster Panulirus homarus (average weight 150–200 g) were exposed to two sublethal concentrations of the copper (9.55 and 19.1 μg/l) for a period of 28 days. The muscle, hepatopancreas, midgut, gills, thoracic ganglion and heart of the lobsters were then dissected out and processed for light microscopic studies. Exposure to copper was found to result in several alterations in the histoarchitecture of the muscle, hepatopancreas, midgut, gills, thoracic ganglion and heart of P. homarus. The alterations included disruption and congestion of muscle bundle in muscle tissue; blackened haemocytes; distended lumen and F cell; necrosis of the tubules of the hepatopancreas; disarrangement of circular muscle of the midgut; accumulation of haemocytes in the haemocoelic space; swelling and fusion of lamellae; abnormal gill tips; hyperplastic, necrotic, and blackened secondary gill lamellae of the gills; damaged neurosecretory cell and sensory and motor fibre; necrotic of the thoracic ganglion; dispersedly arranged muscle bands; clumped satellite cells and nucleus of the heart. The results obtained suggest that the muscle, hepatopancreas, midgut, gills, thoracic ganglion and heart of lobsters exposed to copper were structurally altered. Such alterations could affect vital physiological functions, such as absorption, storage and secretion of the hepatopancreas, digestion of gut and respiration, osmotic and ionic regulations of the gills, which in turn could ultimately affect the survival and growth of P. homarus. Thus, all possible remedial measures should be adopted to prevent the occurrence of copper contamination in the aquatic environment.  相似文献

The genotoxic and histopathological effects of water pollution were investigated on two fish species caught from the Buyuk Menderes River and from its tributary, the Cine Stream. The Buyuk Menderes basin is an important agricultural area in Turkey. The levels of copper, zinc, cadmium, cobalt, and lead were measured at the surface of the water and in gills, liver, and muscle tissue of Chondrostoma nasus and Barbus capito pectoralis. In some tissues, the concentrations of some of these metals exceeded acceptable levels for human consumption. Zinc was found to be the most abundant metal in water and tissues. Maximal metal accumulation was observed in the liver. To detect the genotoxic potential of contaminants, the formation of micronucleus in erythrocytes was used as indicator of chromosomal damage. The frequency of micronucleus formation did not show significant differences between locations and controls in B. capito pectoralis caught from three locations and C. nasus from two locations. The histological changes included significant decreases of the mean lengths of primary and secondary lamellae. In gills epithelia, we observed cellular proliferation that developed Because of secondary lamellae fusion, ballooning degenerations, or club deformation of secondary lamellae and cystic structures in secondary lamellae. In the liver, the changes included swollen and ruptured parenchymal cells, loss of cord structure, vacuoles filled with cellular debris, focal necrosis, and a significant increase in Kupffer cells.  相似文献

The concentrations of iron, copper, zinc, manganese, cadmium, and mercury in tissues and organs of Pacific herring, Far Eastern navaga, and spotted flounder from Amurskii Bay, Sea of Japan, were determined using an atom-absorption method. The distribution of these elements has been studied in organisms of the fish. The greatest concentration of iron, copper, cadmium, and mercury is found in the liver of the fish, manganese is mostly accumulated in the bone tissue, and zinc is found in the skin. Some specific features of metal accumulation in the fish of Amurskii Bay have been revealed. For example, the concentration of iron in the liver of herring and flounder significantly increased the mean concentration known from other areas. A sanitary–hygienic evaluation is provided for the recent levels of metal concentrations in these three species of commercially important fish.  相似文献

The general morphology and surface ultrastructure of the gills of adult and larvae medaka (Oryzias latipes) were studied in freshwater and seawater using scanning electron microscopy. The gills of all examined fish were structurally similar to those of other teleosts and consisted of four pairs of arches supporting (i) filaments bearing lamellae and (ii) rakers containing taste buds. Three cell types, specifically pavement cells, mitochondria‐rich cells (MRCs), and mucous cells, constituted the surface layer of the gill epithelium. Several distinctive characteristics of medaka gills were noted, including the presence of regularly distributed outgrowth on the lamellae, enlarged filament tips, the absence of microridges in most pavement cells in the filament and lamellae and the presence of MRCs in the arch at the filament base. A rapid mode of development was recorded in the gills of larval fish. At hatching, the larvae already had four arches with rudimentary filaments, rakers, and taste buds. The rudimentary lamellae appeared within 2 days after hatching. These results suggest the early involvement of larval gills in respiratory and osmoregulation activities. The responses of the macrostructures and microstructures of gills to seawater acclimation were similar in larvae and adult fish and included modification of the apical surface of MRCs, confirming the importance of these cells in osmoregulation. The potential roles of these peculiarities of the macrostructures and microstructures of medaka gills in the major functions of this organ, such as respiration and osmoregulation, are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The terrestrial crabsGeograpsus grayi, Geograpsus crinipes, Cardisoma hirtipes andGecarcoidea natalis have a reduced number of gills and show a reduced planar gill surface (SA) compared to aquatic species. Gill lamellae are stiffened and thickened (increasing blood/gas (BG) diffusion distances) and nodules maintain wide spacing between lamellae. Haemolymph is directed through the gill lamellae by rows of pillar cells and in the afferent region an intralamellar septum splits the haemolymph into two parallel networks. Gaps in the lines of pillar cells allow movement of haemolymph between adjacent channels. The afferent vessel distributes haemolymph to the lamella via a number of direct channels including the marginal canal and in large gills with the aid of a long, forked sinus which supplies the ventral and central regions of the lamellae. The marginal canal functions in both distribution and collection of haemolymph; the role varies with species. Potential flow-control sites were identified at the junctions between afferent and efferent areas and where the efferent channels enter the efferent branchial vessel. Each gill receives a branch from the sternal artery which supplies all the lamellae. Transport epithelia is the principal cell type in the gills of all species examined though its location varies between species, either being confined to certain gills or specific parts of the lamellae. The gill lamellae of air-breathing crabs are clearly modified to breathe air (stiffening and presence of nodules), though the overall contribution of the gills to gas exchange has been reduced (smaller SA and longer BG diffusion distances). The role of the gills in air-breathing crabs thus appears to have switched from one of an efficient aquatic gas-exchanger (thin with large surface area) and transport tissue, to one that is predominantly set up for ion-regulation.Abbreviations a afferent branchial vessel - ac afferent channels - art arteriole - ass artifactual subcuticular space - bl basal lamina - c cuticle - col collagen - ct connective tissue - e efferent branchial vessel - ec efferent channels - epi epithelium - f folds - g Glycogen - h haemolymph - hc haemocyte - is intralamellar septum - m marginal canal - mi mitochondria - mt microtubules - n nucleus - p pillar cell - s shaft of efferent vessel - sd septate desmosome  相似文献

An infestation of young tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus Peters, by the flagellate Cryptobia branchialiswas observed at the Salton Sea, California, in September, 1997. This is the first report of C. branchialis in a highly saline water-body (43 g l–1). Ultrastructure of C. branchialis as well as its effect on the gills of tilapia were studied using the scanning and transmission electron microscopy. No direct effect of C. branchialis on the epithelial cells of fish gills was observed. However, alterations of gill general structure, such as deposition of copious mucus on the gill surface, swelling of filaments, reduction of respiratory lamellae and their transformation into short club-shaped structures were found in infected fish. This suggests mortality of young tilapia may arise from decreased gill function in response to Cryptobia infestation.  相似文献

This study examines the seasonal dynamics of the activity of some antioxidant enzymes, the biotransformation enzyme glutathione-S-transferase, and levels of reduced glutathione and malondialdehyde in the liver of the flounder Liopsetta pinnifasciata from Amurskii Bay, Sea of Japan. The individual variability of biomarkers was fairly low. Significant sex differences were only found for superoxide dismutase.  相似文献

Summary The morphology and structural features of the gills of the two Western Baltic pipefish Nerophis ophidion and Syngnathus rostellatus were investigated using scanning electron microscopy. The general anatomy of the gills complies with the general pattern in fish. Several adaptations though, show the highly specialized nature of pipefish gills. The filaments are extremely short, few in number and carry only a few lamellae due to the limited space in the branchial cavity. The lamellae have a widely projecting form yet still have a small area in comparison to other fish. Gill irrigation is performed by a specialized pumping mechanism which forces respiratory water through the small but densely packed gill sieve. Although both species live in the same habitat and belong to the same family, differences in gill morphology were found and are related to different lifestyles. S. rostellatus is the more active species and therefore has more filaments per gill arch, more lamellae per filament, wider projecting lamellae and a more extreme utilisation of available space in the gill cavity through a very densely packed gill sieve. N. ophidion has a stationary mode of life and therefore has a less extreme gill anatomy.  相似文献

The species composition and distribution of ostracods were investigated at two sites with different pollution levels on the eastern coast of Amurskii Bay within the limits of Vladivostok City. A total of 41 species were found. In all, thirty-eight species (28 of them alive) were found at the first site between Krasnyi and Groznyi capes. Another twenty-seven species were found at a depth of 1.5–3 m in the phytal zone with a diversity of microbiotopes. As the bottom became increasingly silty and the depth increased, the number of species decreased. A total of 25 species (only 15 of them alive) were found at the mouth of the Vtoraya Rechka River, which is heavily polluted by municipal and industrial sewage discharge. No valves of ostracods were found in surface sediments on silts at a depth down to 5.5m. At 4 m, only 2 species were found alive on stones overgrown with Saccharina japonica. At 500 m from a sewage discharge site, few ostracod valves were found that seemed to have died recently. At a distance of over 1 km, an ostracod assemblage typical of the silty substrates of Amurskii Bay was found below a 7 m depth (21 species, 12 of them alive).  相似文献

The fish gill is a multifunctional organ responsible for gas exchange and ionic regulation. It is hypothesized that both morphological and functional differentiation can be found in the gills of the aquatic air-breathing fish, Trichogaster leeri. To test this, we used the air-breathing fish, Trichogaster leeri, to investigate various morphological/functional parameters. First, we evaluated the importance of performing the aquatic surface respiration behavior in T. leeri. A reduced survival rate was observed when fish were kept in the restrained cages in hypoxic conditions. On the gross anatomy of gills, we found evidence of both morphological and functional modification in the first and the second gills and are responsible for ionic regulation. There were large-bore arterioarterial shunts in the fourth gill arch. It is specialized for the transport of oxygenated blood and is less responsive to environmental stress. In addition, the anterior and the posterior gills differed in the Na+, K+-ATPase activity upon ionic stresses. That is, only the Na+, K+-ATPase activity of the anterior two gills was up-regulated significantly in the deionized water. Lastly, we found that the number of mitochondria-rich cells in the first and the second gills increased following ionic stress and no difference was found in the third and the fourth gills following such an exposure. These results supported the hypothesis that there are morphological and functional differences between anterior and posterior gill arches within the air-breathing Trichogaster leeri. In contrast, no significant difference was found among gills in gross anatomy, filament density and Na+, K+-ATPase activity in the non-air-breather, Barbodes schwanenfeldi.  相似文献

Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) have wide applications in the medical field; however, the toxicological effects are still poorly studied. The study was aimed to determine the effects of 15.78 nm spherical and amine-coated Ag-NPs on hematology and histology of gills and liver tissues in 28 days treated Labeo rohita (L. rohita). It was found that Ag-NPs induced alterations in the hematological parameters in a dose dependent manner. The Ag-NPs also induced histological alterations in a dose-dependent manner. In gill tissues, it induced fusion of secondary lamellae, separation of gill epithelium, fusion and necrosis of lamellar cells, hyperplasia, deformed cartilaginous skeleton, separation and lifting of epithelium, and curling of lamellae in a dose dependent manner. In the liver, Ag-NPs produced abnormalities in hepatic tissues by reducing the size of hepatocytes and nuclei, and stimulated the production of necrotic and apoptotic bodies. It was concluded that Ag-NPs are toxic to aquatic organisms and induce hematotoxicity and histopathological conditions in exposed fish.  相似文献
