Small mammals in a high-altitude grassland area close to Mexico City were studied. Populations of 10 species were censused using live traps in 48 sample quadrats. Within each quadrat, vegetation characterization, including complete floristic listings, cover values for species and layers and values of habitat modification, were assessed. Habitats were described according to plant communities identified using ordination and classification methods. Nine different plant communities were obtained. Densities and abundance of all small mammal species were calculated for each of the habitats classified. Peromyscus alsloni was the most abundant species in all habitats, reaching maximum densities of 55 ha−1 in pine forest with dense ground and herb layer. Peromyscus melanotis also occurred in all habitats but at lower densities (maximum 29 ha−1). Reithrodontomys megalotis was found in all habitats except in tall dense grassland. Densities for this species were generally low (1-9 ha−1) but reached 19 ha−1 in short dense grassland. All other species were largely absent from 4–8 habitats and showed very low densities (0.75–4 ha−1). The densities of the more abundant species were largely correlated with more open habitats and higher indices of habitat modification. Lower altitude grassland habitats have a greater abundance of small mammals and a higher species richness than the medium and higher altitude, physiognomically more complex habitats. Species richness was highest in tall pine-alder forest with a species-rich, dense herb layer and lowest in pine forest with dense ground and herb layers. 1. To evaluate the spatial extent of the effects of forest cover on stream ecosystems, we measured algae, invertebrate, and fish biomass and invertebrate and fish community structure in 38 small first- to third-order streams in the National Capital Region of Canada along with forest cover at different spatial scales.
2. We considered 55 spatial scales of forest cover including several buffer widths (doubling 10–320 m) and lengths (doubling 10–1280 m, entire riparian distance upstream from sampling area) and entire catchments to determine which spatial scale maximized the correlation with biomass and metrics of community structure.
3. The proportion of variability in biomass and structural metrics explained by forest cover generally increased with increasing scale, suggesting that catchment-wide disturbances are the most influential determinants of benthic and fish communities.
4. Catchment forest cover explained more variation in algal (adjusted r 2   =   0.54), invertebrate (adjusted r 2   =   0.51) and fish (adjusted r 2   =   0.33) biomass than structural metrics of invertebrates and fish (adjusted r 2   =   0.08–0.27).
5. Analyses of the partial effects of forest cover at three scales (reach, riparian and the entire catchment) on biomass and community structure metrics identified catchment and reach scales as being most influential and never detected a significant partial effect of forest cover at the riparian scale.
6. These results suggest that maintenance or protection of reach and riparian buffers alone will not sufficiently protect stream function and structure from catchment-wide impacts.  相似文献

The diet, habitat use and mercury concentration of the small fish species, the straight fin barb Barbus paludinosus , were studied in Lake Awassa, Ethiopia, for a period of 1 year from February 2003 to January 2004. Stable isotope signatures of nitrogen and carbon in different total length ( L T) classes were used to determine trophic positions and organic carbon sources, respectively. Barbus paludinosus mainly occupied the protected benthic habitats (littoral and profundal) of the lake. The δ13C values were in the range from −24 to −19‰, indicating that the carbon source for B. paludinosus was benthic, as well. Small individuals (≤ 60 mm L T) mainly preyed upon ostracods, intermediate sizes (60–100 mm) on aquatic insects and gastropods, while a tiny cyprinodont fish Aplocheilichthys antinorii dominated the diet of large individuals (100–160 mm). The progressively increase in δ15N with increasing L T also indicated a diet shift towards piscivory in larger individuals. The mercury concentration ranging from 0·02 to 0·74 mg kg−1 wet mass (wm), was unexpectedly high in this small species, and was significantly positively related to L T, as well as to δ15N. Some large individuals had mercury concentrations < 0·1 mg kg−1 wm, and low δ15N, indicating substantial variations in diet between individuals of same size. The study suggests that other piscivorous species which include B. paludinosus in their diet may have a high mercury intake risk.  相似文献

Ten species of ungulate were filmed, galloping in their natural habitat. They ranged in size from Thomson's gazelle (about 20 kg) to giraffe (about 1000 kg). They were pursued to make them run as fast as possible. The films have been analysed to determine speed, stride frequency, stride and step lengths, and duty factors. The dependence of these quantities on body size is discussed.  

Summary:


Fast locomotion of zebra, giraffe, warthog and seven species of Bovidae has been studied. The animals were filmed from a pursuing vehicle while galloping in their natural habitat.
Stride frequency was more closely correlated with limb length (represented by hip height) than with body mass. Mean stride frequency was proportional to (hip height)-0·51 and maximum stride frequency to (hip height) -0·63.
Maximum speed was between 10 and 14 m s -1 for all species except buffalo (7 m s -1). It was not significantly correlated with body mass.
Since the small species ran at least as fast as the large ones they attained higher Froude numbers. Relative stride length was approximately 1·8 (Froude number)0·39 for all species, irrespective of size. Relative step length was approximately 0·65 (Froude number)0·2, both for the fore feet and for the hind ones. The vertical forces exerted by the feet are proportional to (body weight)×(Froude number)0·2 so the forces at maximum speed are larger multiples of body weight for small species than for large ones.  相似文献

Totals of 2.67 x 105 and 7.56 x 105 juvenile red sea bream of three size groups (10, 20 and 40 mm t.l.) marked with a fluorescent substance in the otolith were released in News Bay, Oita Prefecture, Japan, in July 1987 and June 1988, respectively; the aim was to estimate growth and mortality of different developmental stages.
Of fish released in 1987 and 1988, 10 618 and 4413, respectively were recaptured during those two years. Released fish remained in the bay until the end of summer, and afterwards migrated out towards open waters. Fish of the 40-mm group released in 1987 grew to over 200 mm t.l. in one year. Mean growth rate for 19 days after release was higher in the 40-mm group (0.87 mm day−1) than in the 20-mm group (0.74mm day−1). Survival rates over 19 days were 59.0 and 10.1 % for 40-mm and 20-mm fish, respectively, in 1987, and those over 30 days were 69.2, 3.3 and 0.0% for 40-mm, 20-mm and 10-mm fish, respectively, in 1988.
Cannibalism was indicated by the presence of marked otoliths for 20-mm fish in the stomachs of a few 40-mm individuals recaptured 2 days after release. Size-dependent growth and size-selective mortality were both noted in juvenile red sea bream, i.e. the relative size differential between larger and smaller individuals was maintained in the period between marking and recapture, and mortality was inversely proportional to size.  相似文献

Determinants of avian species richness at different spatial scales   总被引:10,自引:1,他引:9  
ABSTRACT. Studies of factors influencing avian biodiversity yield very different results depending on the spatial scale at which species richness is calculated. Ecological studies at small spatial scales (plot size 0.0025–0.4 km2) emphasize the importance of habitat diversity, whereas biogeographical studies at large spatial scales (quadrat size 400–50,000 km2) emphasize variables related to available energy such as temperature. In order to bridge the gap between those two approaches the bird atlas data set of Lake Constance was used to study factors determining avian species diversity at the intermediate spatial scales of landscapes (quadrat size 4–36 km2). At these spatial scales bird species richness was influenced by habitat diversity and not by variables related to available energy probably because, at the landscape scale, variation in available energy is small. Changing quadrat size between 4 and 36 km2, but keeping the geographical extension of the study constant resulted in profound changes in the degree to which the amount of different habitat types was correlated with species richness. This suggests that high species diversity is achieved by different management regimes depending on the spatial scale at which species richness is calculated. However, generally, avian species diversity seems to be determined by spatial heterogeneity at the corresponding spatial scale. Thus, protecting the diversity of landscapes and ecosystems appears to ensure also high levels of species diversity.  相似文献

The distribution of microbial populations that decomposed sugar, cellulose and lignin-related substrates was examined in a beech Fagus grandifolia Ehrh. and maple Acer saccharum Marsh. dominated woodlot developed on glacial till. The topography of the woodlot, characterized by rises, depressions and more extensive level areas about 1 m in diameter with a 0.5 m vertical maximum, produced a mosaic of decomposer habitats designated as high, level and low sites.
In general, populations of sugar, cellulose and lignin decomposing organisms (based on ten estimates made from April to October) were two to four times higher in litter and soil samples from low sites than those from high sites. Sugar decomposing bacteria in litter were most abundant at all topographic sites. 135 × 106 g−1 dry litter at high sites, 396 × 106 g−1 at level sites and 456 × 106 g−1 at low sites; lignolytic fungi were least abundant, 391 × 102 g−1 dry litter at high sites. 700 × 106 g−1 at level sites and 954 × 102 g−1 at low sites. Numbers of microbial decomposers in the topographic sites were correlated with organic matter content. Distribution of fungal genera did not appear to be related to topographic site. Most populations examined showed two numerical peaks, one in late May or June and one in late September or October. It is suspected that these peaks were influenced by the coincident timing of favourable physical conditions and priming by soluble nutrients leached from litter.  相似文献

Temperature-sensitive radio transmitters were employed to study the patterns of behavioural thermoregulation, habitat preference and movement of 19 adult spring chinook salmon, Oncurhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), in the Yakima River. During the 4 months prior to spawning, fish maintained an average internal temperature 2.5°C below ambient river temperature. This represented a 12 to 20% decrease in basal metabolic demand or a saving of 17.3 to 29.9 calkg−1 h−1. Fish were most commonly associated with islands, pools, and rock out-croppings along stream banks. Homing behaviour appeared to be modified to optimize temperature regimes and energy conservation. As the time of spawning approached, fish left thermal refuges and migrated to spawning grounds upstream and downstream of refuge areas. Although spring chinook salmon residing within cool-water refuges may be capable of mitigating sub-lethal temperature effects, cool-water areas need to be abundant and available to the fish. The availability of suitable thermal refuges and appropriate holding habitat within mainstem rivers may affect long-term population survival.  相似文献

The fish community of the small (17·5 ha) intermittently open East Kleinemonde estuary was sampled between 1994 and 1997 to estimate population size, standing stock, growth and productivity. The estuarine-spawning species were numerically more abundant ( n c . 750 000) but due to their small size contributed only 11·7% to the total biomass. The total annual productivity of all fishes in the estuary ( n c . 890 000), with a standing stock of 28·44 g m −2, was calculated at 55·89 g m−2 year−1. The small sparid Rhabdosargus holubi with a production estimate of 41·35 g m−2 year−1 accounted for <74% of the total fish production in this estuary.  相似文献

Slow response of plant species richness to habitat loss and fragmentation   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13  
We examined the response of vascular plant species richness to long-term habitat loss and fragmentation of Estonian calcareous grasslands (alvars). The current number of habitat specialist species in 35 alvars was not explained by their current areas and connectivities but it was explained by their areas and connectivities 70 years ago ( R 2 = 0.27). We estimated the magnitude of extinction debt in local communities by assuming an equilibrium species richness in 14 alvars that had lost only a small amount of area and by applying this model to the remaining alvars, in which the average area has declined from 3.64 km2 in the 1930s to 0.21 km2 at present. The extinction debt estimated for individual alvars was around 40% of their current species number. Our conclusions are applicable to temperate grasslands in general, which have lost much area because of agricultural intensification and cessation of traditional management.  相似文献

Fish assemblages in Cais do Carvão Bay, Madeira Island, a proposed marine protected area (MPA), were determined from a diver visual census. A total of 32 transect counts were performed. Habitats sampled included sandy bottom, rocky boulders, vertical walls and rocky outcrops. Species richness, diversity, density, trophic structure, size and spatial organization were documented for the fish assemblages. Forty‐four species from 23 families were encountered; 32% belonged to Sparidae (10) and Labridae (four). The greatest species richness (25) was observed in rocky boulder habitat at 10–15 m depth, while the lowest (five) occurred over a deeper sand habitat. The greatest density (760·5 individuals per 100 m2) was recorded over rocky outcropping (20–25 m deep), and the lowest of 11·6 individuals per 100 m2 was over a sand bottom at 10–15 m depth. Thalassoma pavo , Abudefduf luridus and Chromis limbata had higher densities on hard bottoms, while Heteroconger longissimus was the most abundant species in sand bottom habitats. No significant differences were detected for all indices calculated among depth intervals for sand and rocky boulder stations. Sand and rock boulder substratum, however, differed significantly for the 10–15 m depth stratum.  相似文献

Estimating species richness in large biomes is a central challenge in ecology and conservation biology. However, accurate census data is often available only from small discrete plots distributed within the biome. Using tree species richness data collected from 48 plots (0.25 ha each) widely distributed through 60 000 km2 in the rainforests of the Western Ghats of southern India, we test the application of a proposed method for estimating species richness at large scales from measured species commonalities between pairs of censused plots. We show that the method allows extrapolation of species richness from a scale of 0.25 ha plots to that of the entire biome, or 105 km2.  相似文献

The gastric emptying time (G.E.T.) in turbot was investigated using X-radiography and was found to decrease with temperature. Small fish processed a given ration, expressed as percent body weight, faster than large fish (G.E.T. was found to be proportional to (fish weight)0.364). Large meals in a given fish were processed at a faster rate than small meals. Gastric emptying rate (G.E.R.) was found to be proportional to (meal size g)0.613 at 8° C and (meal size g)0.788 at 19° C. These exponents are in agreement with a recently proposed model relating G.E.T. and G.E.R. to meal size (Fänge & Grove, 1978). Large fish emptied a meal of given absolute size from the stomach at a faster rate (g h−1) than small fish. Experimental meals diluted with kaolin were evacuated in significantly less time than a control diet, suggesting that turbot may adjust feeding rates when food quality varies.  相似文献

1. We made an empirical test of a recent proposal that feeding niche widths might be determined as variance of stable isotope values. We determined δ 13C and δ 15N values of perch ( Perca fluviatilis ), roach ( Rutilus rutilus ) and their prey from a biomanipulated lake, when the mass removal of fish led to reduced inter- and intra-specific competition and increases in zooplankton abundance and body size.
2. After the first fish removals, both perch and roach mean δ 13C values decreased and mean δ 15N values increased, indicating a greater diet contribution from pelagic sources.
3. Variances of both δ 13C and δ 15N values first increased in both fish populations, indicating a wider food spectrum and expanded feeding niche width following reduced fish abundances. Observed changes were greater for the perch population than for roach.
4. In 2006, the perch population abruptly changed its diet so that most individuals were primarily consuming the abundant young-of-the-year fish, and this was reflected in significantly reduced variances of both δ 13C and δ 15N values.
5. We conclude that isotopic variance can indeed reflect changes in feeding niche width and offers a promising way to study such general ecological concepts.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Mean annual density and biomass () of Cambarus bartonii in an Appalachian mountain stream (U.S.A.) was 12 individuals m−2 and 1669 mg (ash-free dry weight) m−2.
2. Annual production ( P ) of C bartonii was 961 mg AFDW m−2. Despite high biomass, low growth rates resulted in low production and a low P/ ratio of 0.58.
3. While C bartonii constituted 61% of the total macroinvertebrate biomass, it contributed only 13% of annual community secondary production.
4. Litter processing was positively related to temperature and crayfish size. Cambariis bartotnii was estimated to comminute 36 g m−2 y−1 of leaf litter (>1 mm2) to 24 g m−>2 y−1 fine particulate material (<1 mm2). The annual pattern of litter comminution by crayfish was regulated by temperature. As a result, >5()% of shredding activity by crayfish occurred from June to September which was also the period of lowest litter standing crops and activity of other shredding macroinvertebrates.
5. We speculate that during summer crayfish play an important role in temperate woodland streams by converting slowly processed leaf litter species (e.g. Rhododendron ) to fine particles which are then available to collector-gatherers (e.g. Chironomidae, Oligochaeta).  相似文献

1. Small mammal populations were studied in montane evergreen forests in the Nilgiris, southern India, using live-trapping from January 1994 to September 1996. Two sites were selected, one with a single large forest patch and adjoining plantations, and the other with several small forest patches separated by grassland.
2. Nine species were recorded, of which eight were trapped in the forest patches, two in the grasslands and five in plantations. Rattus rattus was the most abundant species (2–36 individuals ha−1) followed by Suncus montanus (0–11 individuals ha−1). Densities of seven other species recorded were very low.
3. Synchrony in various population variables – density, biomass, mean weight, density of adults and adult females, and proportion of adults, adult females and sub-adults – was examined for Rattus rattus populations in the forest patches and plantations. Density and biomass were studied in seven other species recorded at these sites. Spearman's rank order correlation was used as a measure of synchrony between the population variables.
4. Within-site synchrony was higher than between-site synchrony in population characters. Synchrony was also higher between plots within the unfragmented site than they were between plots in the fragmented site. Relatively high synchrony in proportions of adults, adult females and juveniles in the forest patches implied that breeding is probably influenced by climate and food availability, which are seasonal in this habitat.
5. Given the small patch sizes (≈1–10 ha) and low population sizes, asynchrony is likely to be an outcome of demographic and environmental stochasticity, and low dispersal rates may impede establishment of synchrony.  相似文献

The prolonged swimming speed and metabolic rate of 0+ year Arctic grayling Thymallus articus were examined with respect to current velocity, water temperature and fish size, and compared to conditions fish occupy in the river. Oxygen consumption (mg O2 h−1) increased with fish mass and temperature (6–23° C), with a steep increase in metabolic rate between 12 and 16° C. Absolute prolonged swimming speed (cm s−1) increased rapidly with fish size (total length, L T, and mass), however, fish in the natural stream habitat occupied current velocities between 15 and 25 cm s−1 or 4  L T s−1, approximately half their potential prolonged swimming speed (10  L T s−1).  相似文献

In order to evaluate the impact of the lesser weever on the ecosystem of the southern North Sea, geographical distribution, density, growth, production and food requirements have been estimated. High densities were found on and around the Brown Ridge, an area with high tidal current velocities, medium grain-size of the sediment and a poor benthic fauna. Growth is restricted to the months of June October. During the winter cessation of growth a considerable loss of weight (about 20%) takes place. Mortality has been estimated by using the average size frequency distribution of all catches made from 1972 to 1984. The resulting convex type of survival curve indicates a high survival rate of the II to IV-group fishes. The production (estimated with Allen's graphical method) of a population of 100 individuals including all age groups (0-VI) amounts to 123.7 g AFDW-year'. In areas with highest densities, consequently, production amounts to 0.018–0.078 g AFDW-m2 -year-1. With an assumed transfer efficiency of 10% through the year, food requirements amounts to 0.18–0.78 g AFDW-m 2 -year -1. Since the lesser weever feeds mainly on fish (85.6%), almost exclusively on gobies (Pomatoschistus sp.), and with an assumed transfer efficiency of approximately 10%, the indirect predatory pressure exerted by it may amount to 1.6 6.7g AFDW-m 2.year -1. A possible feeding by gobies on pelagic organisms (calanoids, mysids) is discussed.  相似文献

Temperate semi-natural grasslands are known for their high plant species richness at small spatial scales. We examined the variation in small-scale species richness in a sample of 63 sites from Swedish semi-natural grasslands, located as fragments in the modem landscape dominated by forest and agricultural land. Data were obtained from two spatial scales at each site. 1 dm2 and 4 m2. Using an analysis based on a Monte Carlo simulation, we found support for the species-pool hypothesis: a high species richness at the I dm- scale was associated with high species richness at the 4 m2 scale. The conclusion from this pattern analysis would, however, be considerably strengthened if we could reduce the likelihood that other mechanisms than sampling from species pools of unequal size influence the pattern of small-scale species richness. Additional analyses were made in order to identify such mechanisms. We examined whether four putative key traits: seed size, seed production, plant size and reproductive allocation were different among species at comparatively species-rich vs species-poor I dm' plots. We found only a little evidence for such differences. There was a weak tendency that species in the plots with high species richness possessed larger (and fewer) seeds than species from species-poor plots. Our results are congruent with the main prediction of the species pool model: variation in small-scale species richness (1 dm2- scale) is basically a result of sampling from unequally sized community species pools (4 m2 scale). Variation in species richness between the 4 nr semi-natural grassland "patches" may thus be sought for among mechanisms operating al larger spatial scales than 4 m2. Litter decomposition represents one of the largest annual fluxes of carbon (C) from terrestrial ecosystems, particularly for tropical forests, which are generally characterized by high net primary productivity and litter turnover. We used data from the Long-Term Intersite Decomposition Experiment (LIDET) to (1) determine the relative importance of climate and litter quality as predictors of decomposition rates, (2) compare patterns in root and leaf litter decomposition, (3) identify controls on net nitrogen (N) release during decay, and (4) compare LIDET rates with native species studies across five bioclimatically diverse neotropical forests. Leaf and root litter decomposed fastest in the lower montane rain and moist forests and slowest in the seasonally dry forest. The single best predictor of leaf litter decomposition was the climate decomposition index (CDI), explaining 51% of the variability across all sites. The strongest models for predicting leaf decomposition combined climate and litter chemistry, and included CDI and lignin ( R 2=0.69), or CDI, N and nonpolar extractives ( R 2=0.69). While we found no significant differences in decomposition rates between leaf and root litter, drivers of decomposition differed for the two tissue types. Initial stages of decomposition, determined as the time to 50% mass remaining, were driven primarily by precipitation for leaf litter ( R 2=0.93) and by temperature for root litter ( R 2=0.86). The rate of N release from leaf litter was positively correlated with initial N concentrations; net N immobilization increased with decreasing initial N concentrations. This study demonstrates that decomposition is sensitive to climate within and across tropical forests. Our results suggest that climate change and increasing N deposition in tropical forests are likely to result in significant changes to decomposition rates in this biome.  相似文献
