We report measurements on discrimination of orientation and magnification made for elements differentiated in colour and/or luminance from their background. By performing measurements at a series of background luminances and for fixed luminance of the elements, we show that with colour contrast, discrimination for both spatial parameters is unimpaired when the background is at isoluminance with the elements. Under simple luminance contrast, however, these discriminations become poorer when the background luminance is within some +/- 5% of that of the elements, and are completely absent when the two values are the same. A deuteranomalous subject is unable to make the spatial discrimination around the isoluminance point for colour contrasts which are too small for him to distinguish, but for which subjects with normal colour vision maintain spatial discriminations at isoluminance. This observation establishes that the physiological mechanisms of normal colour vision, rather than stimulus artefacts, mediate the observed spatial discriminations. We conclude that the visual processing of colour and spatial parameters such as orientation and magnification are intrinsically related to each other.  相似文献

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) discriminate multiple object features such as colour, pattern and 2D shape, but it remains unknown whether and how bees recover three-dimensional shape. Here we show that bees can recognize objects by their three-dimensional form, whereby they employ an active strategy to uncover the depth profiles. We trained individual, free flying honeybees to collect sugar water from small three-dimensional objects made of styrofoam (sphere, cylinder, cuboids) or folded paper (convex, concave, planar) and found that bees can easily discriminate between these stimuli. We also tested possible strategies employed by the bees to uncover the depth profiles. For the card stimuli, we excluded overall shape and pictorial features (shading, texture gradients) as cues for discrimination. Lacking sufficient stereo vision, bees are known to use speed gradients in optic flow to detect edges; could the bees apply this strategy also to recover the fine details of a surface depth profile? Analysing the bees’ flight tracks in front of the stimuli revealed specific combinations of flight maneuvers (lateral translations in combination with yaw rotations), which are particularly suitable to extract depth cues from motion parallax. We modelled the generated optic flow and found characteristic patterns of angular displacement corresponding to the depth profiles of our stimuli: optic flow patterns from pure translations successfully recovered depth relations from the magnitude of angular displacements, additional rotation provided robust depth information based on the direction of the displacements; thus, the bees flight maneuvers may reflect an optimized visuo-motor strategy to extract depth structure from motion signals. The robustness and simplicity of this strategy offers an efficient solution for 3D-object-recognition without stereo vision, and could be employed by other flying insects, or mobile robots.  相似文献

Neurophysiological, brain imaging, and perceptual studies in animals and humans suggest that illusory (occluding) contours are represented at an early level of visual cortical processing. Comparatively little is known about the mechanisms defining the depth order and the brightness illusion associated with such contours. Baumann et al. (1997) found neurons in area V2 of the alert monkey that signaled not only illusory contours but also the figure-ground direction that human observers perceive at such contours. The majority of these neurons showed this property independent stimulus contrast; a small minority preferred a certain combination of figure-ground direction and contrast polarity at these contours. In this article, we simulate the responses of these neurons by means of a grouping mechanism that uses occlusion cues (line-ends, corners) to define figure-ground direction and contrast polarity at such contours.  相似文献

After a preliminary study of visual evoked potentials (VEPS) to a test grating seen in the presence of masks at different orientations, psychophysical data are presented showing the effects of adaptation and of masking on thresholds for detecting the same test grating. The test is a vertical grating of spatial frequency 2 cycles per degree; adapting and masking gratings differ from the test either in orientation or in spatial frequency. The effects of adaptation and masking are explained by a single mechanism model that assumes: (i) adaptation and masking both alter the contrast response (or transducer) function of the mechanism that detects the test; (ii) masks, but not adaptors, stimulate the mechanism that detects the test; and (iii) a test is detectable when it raises response level by a constant amount. The model incorporates two distinct tuning functions, a broad adaptive contrast function and a narrow effective contrast function. It accounts adequately for all the data, including the location and size of the facilitative dip found in some masking functions, the constant slopes of the threshold elevation segments of adaptation functions and the varying slopes of masking functions. It also predicts the sometimes surprising joint effects of adaptation followed by masking and of two masks operating simultaneously.  相似文献

Several aspects of the roles of object contours and of rivalry and suppression in binocular vision are considered in a TV engineering context. Three experiments, using 3D b/w stills, were conducted to explore subjective effects of irregular horizontal shifts at object contours (displacement errors), which are expected to be a typical picture impairment problem of future 3D TV multi-viewpoint systems. Performance and rating tasks on a wide range of impairment magnitudes and various picture parameters served to give a quantitative estimate of the influence of displacement errors on: (1) correctness of binocular depth perception; and (2) picture quality. Two experiments (constant vs. variable location of impairments over time) with vertical grating stimuli showed binocular depth perception to withstand levels of up to 90% misplaced contour elements in one part of the stereo pair. Quality assessments were much more critical. They depended both on the proportion of impaired pixels and on the maximum horizontal width of individual impairments. A corresponding stimulus model was found to be valid for pictures with natural content, too. Impairments were less annoying when visible by only one eye instead of both. A specific formulation is given of the influence of contrast and spatial frequency features on performance.  相似文献

Traditional stereo grouping models have focused on the problem of stereo correspondence between monocular inputs. Recent physiological data revealed that the disparity selective V2 cells increase their responses when (random-dot stereograms) stimuli within their receptive fields are at or near the boundary of a depth surface. Such highlights to depth (non-luminance) edges are seemingly not computationally required for the correspondence problem. Computationally, these highlights make the boundaries of a depth surface more salient, serving pre-attentive segmentation (between depth planes) and attracting visual attention. In special cases, they enable the psychophysically observed perceptual pop-out of a target from a background of visually identical distractors at a different depth. To achieve the highlights, mutual inhibition between disparity selective cells that are tuned to the same or similar depths is required. However, such mutual inhibition would impede the computation for the correspondence problem, which requires mutual excitation between the same cells. In this work, I introduce a computational model that, I believe, is the first to address both stereo correspondence and pre-attentive stereo segmentation. The computational mechanisms in the model are based on intracortical interactions in V2. I will demonstrate that the model captures the following physiological and psychophysical phenomena: (i) depth-edge highlighting; (ii) disparity capture; (iii) pop-out; and (iv) transparency.  相似文献

The results of early studies on colour vision in dogs led to the conclusion that chromatic cues are unimportant for dogs during their normal activities. Nevertheless, the canine retina possesses two cone types which provide at least the potential for colour vision. Recently, experiments controlling for the brightness information in visual stimuli demonstrated that dogs have the ability to perform chromatic discrimination. Here, we show that for eight previously untrained dogs colour proved to be more informative than brightness when choosing between visual stimuli differing both in brightness and chromaticity. Although brightness could have been used by the dogs in our experiments (unlike previous studies), it was not. Our results demonstrate that under natural photopic lighting conditions colour information may be predominant even for animals that possess only two spectral types of cone photoreceptors.  相似文献

Mutant mice with retinal degeneration (rd/rd) were given 1-h pulses of light of varying brightness at times of the night when they would normally be active. The mutant mice showed a significantly greater inhibition of locomotor activity to light (negative masking) than wildtype controls. Lack of impairment, or even enhancement of negative masking suggests that this response may depend on sparing in retinally degenerate mice of the same receptor type that mediates clock resetting, because synchronization of the circadian system is known to be unimpaired in these mutants. With very dim light pulses, mutants did not change their activity, but wildtypes actually became more active (positive masking). Camouflage is frequently used in the animal kingdom in order to conceal oneself from visual detection or surveillance. Many camouflage techniques are based on masking the familiar contours and texture of the subject by superposition of multiple edges on top of it. This work presents an operator, D arg, for the detection of three-dimensional smooth convex (or, equivalently, concave) objects. It can be used to detect curved objects on a relatively flat background, regardless of image edges, contours and texture. We show that a typical camouflage found in some animal species seems to be a 'countermeasure' taken against detection that might be based on our method. Detection by D arg is shown to be very robust, from both theoretical considerations and practical examples of real-life images.  相似文献

Recently, with most mobile phones coming with dual cameras, stereo image super-resolution is becoming increasingly popular in phones and other modern acquisition devices, leading stereo super-resolution images spread widely on the Internet. However, current image forensics methods are carried out in monocular images, and high false positive rate appears when detecting stereo super-resolution images by these methods. Therefore, it is important to develop stereo super-resolution image detection method. In this paper, a convolutional neural network with multi-scale feature extraction and hierarchical feature fusion is proposed to detect the stereo super-resolution images. Multi-atrous convolutions are employed to extract multi-scale features and be adapt for varying stereo super-resolution images, and hierarchical feature fusion further improve the performance and robustness of the model. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed network can detect stereo super-resolution images effectively and achieve strong generalization and robustness. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first attempt to investigate the performance of current forensics methods when tested under stereo super-resolution images, and represent the first study of stereo super-resolution images detection. We believe that it can raise the awareness about the security of stereo super-resolution images.  相似文献

It is generally expected that depth (distance) is the internal representational primitive that corresponds to much of the perception of 3D. We tested this assumption in monocular surface stimuli that are devoid of distance information (due to orthographic projection and the chosen surface shape, with perspective projection used as a control) and yet are vividly three-dimensional. Slant judgments were found to be in close correspondence with the actual geometric slant of the stimuli; the spatial orientation of the surfaces was perceived accurately. The apparent depth in these stimuli was then tested by superimposing a stereo depth probe over the monocular surface. In both the perspective and orthographic projection the gradient of perceived depth, measured by matching the apparent depth of the stereo probe with that of the monocular surface at a series of locations, was substantial. The experiments demonstrate that in orthographic projection the visual system can compute from local surface orientation a depth quantity that is commensurate with the relative depth derived from stereo disparity. The depth data suggests that, at least in the near field, the zero value for relative depth lies at the same absolute depth as the stereo horopter (locus of zero stereo disparity). Relative to this zero value, the depth-from-slant computation seems to provide an estimate of distance information that is independent of the absolute distance to the surface.Supproted by Office of Naval Research Contract N00014-K-84-0533. Final instar caterpillars of the poplar hawkmoth ( Laothoe populi ) are usually yellow-green when they have been feeding on Salix fragilis but white when on Populus alba. Similarly final instar caterpillars of the eyed hawkmoth (Smerinthus ocellata) vary in colour from yellow-green when fed on Salix cinerea or S. fragilis to grey-green when fed on Salix ripens or S. alba. Most caterpillars of these two moths are thus very cryptic to the human eye. It has already been shown that colour matching is brought about by young caterpillars changing colour depending on the colour of the substrate perceived by their eyes. Evidence is presented here for selective predation, probably by birds. Yellow-green poplar hawk caterpillars disappeared from P. alba more rapidly than did white caterpillars, but there was no significant difference in the survival of the two colour forms on S. fragilis. Yellow-green caterpillars survived better on S. fragilis than on P. alba , but there was no significant difference in the survival of white caterpillars on the two plants. Reasons why selective predation did not occur in all of the experiments are discussed.  相似文献

Sexual ornamentation needs to be conspicuous to be effective in attracting potential mates and defending territories and indeed, a multitude of ways exists to achieve this. Two principal mechanisms for increasing conspicuousness are to increase the ornament's colour or brightness contrast against the background and to increase the size of the ornament. We assessed the relationship between the colour and size of the dewlap, a large extendible throat‐fan, across a range of species of gliding lizards (Agamidae; genus Draco) from Malaysia and the Philippines. We found a negative relationship across species between colour contrast against the background and dewlap size in males, but not in females, suggesting that males of different species use increasing colour contrast and dewlap size as alternative strategies for effective communication. Male dewlap size also increases with increasing sexual size dimorphism, and dewlap colour and brightness contrast increase with increasing sexual dichromatism in colour and brightness, respectively, suggesting that sexual selection may act on both dewlap size and colour. We further found evidence that relative predation intensity, as measured from predator attacks on models placed in the field, may play a role in the choice of strategy (high chromatic contrast or large dewlap area) a species employs. More broadly, these results highlight that each component in a signal (such as colour or size) may be influenced by different selection pressures and that by assessing components individually, we can gain a greater understanding of the evolution of signal diversity.  相似文献

The results of 40 single-pair matings of the landsnailCepaea nemoralis, mostly concerning the rarer banding patterns are presented. A total of 3678 F1 individuals were obtained, 2315 of which were scored when adult, the remainder as juveniles.The presence or absence of band 3 in banded snails does not seem to be genetically determined. It is shown that several banding patterns (e.g. 12300, 02300, 00340, 003300, 00305) should be classified as 00300. The presence or absence of extra (satellite-) bands seems to be multifactorially controlled. It is suggested that pattern 10345 is dominant over 12345 and that it is determined either by an allele of the threebanded locus, recessive to pattern-allele 00345, or by a different locus but then epistatically suppressed by the gene for 00345. Pattern 02345 in some cases is genetically 00345 and in other cases 12345. Fusion of bands 4 and 5 is multifactorially controlled, and is perhaps influenced by, or linked to, the loci for colour and three-bandedness. Fusion of bands 1 and 2 seems to be also multifactorially controlled. This fusion is strongly correlated with fusion (45), and is independent of colour. Pale is recessive to dark body colour. The latter occurs in several shades which are multifactorially controlled. Reddish body colour is recessive to yellowish, and the gene concerned is linked with that for shell colour. Variation in the expression of dominance was found at the loci for 00300, 00345, 10345, reddish body colour and pale body colour.  相似文献

Persistent colour polymorphisms can result from natural and/or sexual selection, and may occur in males, females, or both sexes. Contrary to conspicuous patterns frequently observed in courtship colouration, differences in cryptic colouration are not always perceived by the human sensory system. In sexually dimorphic sailfin silversides fishes, males show conspicuous colour polymorphisms whereas females appear monomorphic and cryptic. We measured the spectral composition of body, fin and peduncle colouration in male and female Telmatherina antoniae ‘small’, a sailfin silverside species endemic to ancient Lake Matano, and found evidence for a colour polymorphism in both sexes. The three colour morphs distinguished by spectral data correspond to those commonly reported for males, and are also present in the visually (to a human eye) cryptic females. Females show hue value patterns similar to those present in males, but differ from males substantially in chroma and brightness. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first example of a cryptic colour polymorphism in fishes; however, its significance for the mating system remains unknown. The present finding highlights the need for incorporating female spectral data into analyses of colour patterns, and suggests that colour analyses should include cryptic sexes.  相似文献

Squirrel monkeys, like most Neotropical primates, display a sex-linked colour vision polymorphism. Here we assess the colour perception of 8 Saimiri ustus by a behavioural paradigm using Munsell colour chips as discriminating stimuli. A random variation in brightness assured that discriminations were based on colour rather than brightness cues. Results indicate that all males showed random performances when presented with stimuli which, in previous experiments with human colour-blind individuals and dichromatic non-human primates, proved to be difficult to discriminate. Females behaved as trichromats. The different phenotypes in S. ustus may offer diverse advantages in feeding ecology and are in agreement with the existence of vision polymorphism, as described for other species of squirrel monkeys.  相似文献

Psychophysical thresholds for the detection of luminance targets improve significantly when the targets are presented in a specific context of spatially separated, collinear inducing stimuli defining visual contours. This phenomenon is generally referred to as a special case of detection facilitation called spatial facilitation. Spatial facilitation has been observed with luminance-defined. achromatic stimuli on achromatic backgrounds as well as with targets and inducers defined by colour contrast. This paper reviews psychophysical results from detection experiments with human observers showing the conditions under which spatially separated contour inducers facilitate the detection of simultaneously presented target stimuli. The findings point towards two types of spatial mechanisms: (i) Short-range mechanisms that are sensitive to narrowly spaced stimuli of small size and, at distinct target locations, selective to the contrast polarity of targets and inducers. (ii) Long-range mechanisms that are triggered by longer stimuli, generate facilitation across wider spatial gaps between targets and inducers, and are insensitive to their contrast polarity. Spatial facilitation with chromatic stimuli requires a longer inducer exposure than spatial facilitation with achromatic stimuli, which is already fully effective at inducer exposures of 30 ms. This difference in temporal dynamics indicates some functional segregation between mechanisms for colour and luminance contrast in spatial coding. In general, spatially induced detection facilitation can to a large extent be explained by mechanisms involving from-short-to-long-range interactions between cortical detectors.  相似文献

Leaf colour has been proposed to signal levels of host defence to insect herbivores, but we lack data on herbivory, leaf colour and levels of defence for wild host populations necessary to test this hypothesis. Such a test requires measurements of leaf spectra as they would be sensed by herbivore visual systems, as well as simultaneous measurements of chemical defences and herbivore responses to leaf colour in natural host-herbivore populations. In a large-scale field survey of wild cabbage (Brassica oleracea) populations, we show that variation in leaf colour and brightness, measured according to herbivore spectral sensitivities, predicts both levels of chemical defences (glucosinolates) and abundance of specialist lepidopteran (Pieris rapae) and hemipteran (Brevicoryne brassicae) herbivores. In subsequent experiments, P. rapae larvae achieved faster growth and greater pupal mass when feeding on plants with bluer leaves, which contained lower levels of aliphatic glucosinolates. Glucosinolate-mediated effects on larval performance may thus contribute to the association between P. rapae herbivory and leaf colour observed in the field. However, preference tests found no evidence that adult butterflies selected host plants based on leaf coloration. In the field, B. brassicae abundance varied with leaf brightness but greenhouse experiments were unable to identify any effects of brightness on aphid preference or performance. Our findings suggest that although leaf colour reflects both levels of host defences and herbivore abundance in the field, the ability of herbivores to respond to colour signals may be limited, even in species where performance is correlated with leaf colour.  相似文献
