We measured the diurnal changes in net photosynthetic rate (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s) of the leaves of a liana, Enkleia malaccensis Griff. (Thymelaeaceae), at the canopy level in the lowland tropical rainforest at Pasoh, Peninsular Malaysia. The measurements were made from a canopy walkway system, 30 m from the ground for 3 d in March 2003. P N increased with increasing photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) before noon, though P N was not enhanced by the strong radiation hit in the afternoon. Plotting g s at saturating PAR (>0.5 mmol m−2 s−1) against the vapour pressure deficit (VPD) failed to reveal a significant correlation between VPD and g s, and g s became very low at VPD >2.5 kPa. The relationship between P N and g s was fitted on the same regression line irrespective of measuring day, indicating that this relationship was not influenced by either VPD or leaf temperature (T L). Therefore, in the liana E. malaccensis, an increase in VPD leads to partial stomatal closure and, subsequently, reductions in P N and the midday depression of P N of this plant.  相似文献

The water status of Fagus sylvatica L. and Quercus petraea (Matt) Liebl. was analysed during a cycle of progressive natural drought in southern Europe. Predawn (Ψpd) and midday water potential were measured in transpiring (Ψleaf) and non-transpiring leaves (Ψxyl). Furthermore, photosynthesis (A), stomatal conductance to water vapour (gs) and sap flow (Fd) were recorded on the same dates. Apparent leaf specific hydraulic conductance in the soil–plant–air continuum (Kh) and whole tree hydraulic conductance (Khsf) were calculated by using the simple analogy of the Ohm’s law. Kh was estimated at different points in the pathway as the ratio between transpiration (E) in the uppermost canopy leaves at midday and the gradient of water potential in the different compartments of the continuum soil–roots–stem–branches–leaves. There was a progressive decrease in water potential measured on non-transpiring leaves at the base of tree crown in both species (Ψlxyl) from the beginning of the growing season to the end of summer. A similar decrease was shown in shoot water potential (Ψuxyl) at the uppermost canopy. Predawn water potential (Ψpd) was high in both species until late July (28 July); afterwards, a significant decrease was registered in F. sylvatica and Q. petraea with minimum values of −0.81±0.03 and −0.75±0.06 MPa, respectively, by 15 September. In both species, leaf specific hydraulic conductance in the overall continuum soil–plant–air (Kh) decreased progressively as water stress increases. Minimum values of Kh and Khsf were recorded when Ψpd was lower. However, Q. petraea showed higher Kh than F. sylvatica for the same Ψpd. The decrease in Kh with water stress was mainly linked to its fall from the soil to the lowermost canopy (Ksrs). Nevertheless, a significant resistance in the petiole–leaf lamina (Kpl) was also recorded because significant differences in all dates were found on Ψ between transpiring and non-transpiring leaves from the same shoot. The decline in Kh was followed by an increase in stomatal control of daily water losses through the decrease of stomatal conductance to water vapour (gs) during the day. It promoted a seasonal increase in the stomatal limitation to carbon dioxide uptake for photosynthesis (A). These facts were more relevant in F. sylvatica, which had concurrently a higher decline in water use at the tree level than Q. petraea. The results showed a strong coupling in F. sylvatica and Q. petraea between processes at leaf and tree level. It may be hypothesised a role of specific hydraulic conductance not only in the regulation of water losses by transpiration but also of carbon uptake.  相似文献

The effects of shade on the growth, leaf photosynthetic characteristics, and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters of Lycoris radiata var. radiata were determined under differing irradiances (15, 65, and 100% of full irradiance) within pots. The HI plants exhibited a typical decline in net photosynthetic rate (P N) during midday, which was not observed in MI- and LI plants. This indicated a possible photoinhibition in HI plants as the ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) value was higher and the minimal fluorescence (F0) was lower in the, and LI plants. Diurnal patterns of stomatal conductance (g s) and transpiration rate (E) were remarkably similar to those of P N at each shade treatments, and the intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) had the opposite change trend. Under both shading conditions, the light saturation point, light compensation point and photon-saturated photosynthetic rate (P max) became lower than those under full sunlight, and it was the opposite for the apparent quantum yield (AQY). The higher the level of shade, the lower the integrated daytime carbon gain, stomatal and epidermis cell densities, specific leaf mass (SLM), bulb mass ratio (BMR), leaf thickness, and Chl a/b ratio. In contrast, contents of Chls per dry mass (DM), leaf area ratio (LAR), leaf mass ratio (LMR), leaf length, leaf area and total leaf area per plant increased under the same shade levels to promote photon absorption and to compensate for the lower radiant energy. Therefore, when the integrated daytime carbon gain, leaf area and total leaf area per plant, which are the main factors determining the productivity of L. radiata var. radiata plant, were taken into account together, this species may be cultivated at about 60∼70% of ambient irradiance to promote its growth.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (g s) declined from upper leaves to the lower ones during dry and rainy seasons, indicating that long-term carbon budget should take into account P N variations for different leaf types. Relatively greater P N in the dry season suggested that this species is more able to maintain higher P N under drought, but the relatively higher E in the dry season might reduce water use efficiency (P N/E) for the species. Significant correlations between P N and g s indicated that g s may be the critical factor for P N variability in the desert region.  相似文献

Three- and four-year-old potted, greenhouse-grown cedar seedlings were subjected to two different watering regimes: half received full water supply and the other half was submitted to moderate drought (50% of the full water supply). Height growth was the greatest for C. atlantica and the most-limited for C. brevifolia in the well-watered set. However, in the dry set, height growth was less affected by drought conditions for C. brevifolia than for C. atlantica. Cedrus libani gave intermediate results for both watering regimes. Moderate drought provoked a decrease in osmotic potential at full leaf turgor and a long-lasting osmotic adjustment. When irrigation was withheld completely to induce severe soil drying, gas exchange decreased and then stopped at predawn water potentials of −3.0 MPa for C. brevifolia, between −2.6 and −2.8 MPa for C. libani, and at −2.4 MPa for C. atlantica, irrespective of watering regime. For all species, the dry set showed lower net photosynthesis (A) and stomatal conductance (g s) than the plants in the well-watered set. A and g s responded to variations in atmospheric water-vapour pressure deficit (VPD). As VPD increased, A and g s decreased, and this trend was proportionate to initial values at low VPD, but remained independent of previous watering treatments, plant water status or species. To conclude, C. brevifolia appears to be a species with limited growth potential but strong soil drought tolerance whereas C. atlantica has strong growth potential when an adequate water supply is available but is more sensitive to soil drought. C. libani shows an intermediate behaviour for growth and drought tolerance.  相似文献

We studied how the unusual capacity of mature Fagus grandifolia to form clumps of clonal stems from root sprouts can contribute to its frequent codominance with Acer saccharum in southern Quebec, Canada. In an old-growth forest, the degree of dominance by the two species shifted along topographic gradients spanning a few hundreds of meters, with Fagus more frequent on lower slopes and Acer on upper slopes. The frequency distribution of Fagus stem diameter had an inverse J distribution at all slope positions, which is indicative of continuous recruitment. Acer stem diameter also had an inverse J pattern, except at lower slope positions where size structure was discontinuous. For stems <2 m tall, Fagus regenerated mainly by sprouts at the upper and mid-slopes, while regeneration from seed was more pronounced on the lower slope. This change of regeneration mode affected the spatial pattern of Fagus stems. Understory trees of Fagus were positively correlated with conspecific canopy trees on upper and mid-slopes, but not on lower slopes where Fagus regenerated mainly by seedlings. Understory trees of Acer were positively correlated with conspecific canopy trees only on the mid-slope. There were many Fagus seedlings around Acer canopy trees at the lower slope, suggesting the potential replacement of Acer canopy trees by Fagus. This study suggests that the regeneration traits of the two species changed with slope position and that Fagus patches originating from root sprouts can contribute to the maintenance of AcerFagus codominance at the scale of local landscapes.  相似文献

Morphology, biomass accumulation and allocation, gas exchange, and chlorophyll fluorescence were compared for one-year-old seedlings of Salix psammophila and Artemisia ordosica, two dominant desert species, in response to two water supplies (equivalent to 315.0 mm for present precipitation in growing season and to 157.5 mm for future decreasing precipitation) during 105 d. For both species, photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (Fv/Fm), net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, biomass accumulation in different organs, tree height, number of leaves, and leaf area were reduced in response to the decrease in water supply. For both species, instantaneous water use efficiency was not affected by the water deficit. However, diurnal patterns of gas exchange and biomass allocation were affected in different ways for the two species, with notably a decrease in specific leaf area and an increase in root : shoot ratio for S. psammophila only. Overall, S. psammophila was more responsive to the decreasing precipitation than A. ordosica.  相似文献

The responses of tobacco plants over-expressing trans-zeatin O-glucosyltransferase gene under constitutive or senescence-inducible promoter (35S:ZOG1 and SAG12:ZOG1) and of wild type (WT) plants to water stress and subsequent rehydration were compared. In plants sufficiently supplied with water, both transgenics have higher net photosynthetic rate (PN) in upper and middle leaves and higher stomatal conductance (gs) in middle leaves than WT. Water use efficiency (WUE = PN/E) was higher in both transgenics than in WT. During prolonged water stress, both PN and E declined to a similar extent in both transgenics and WT plants. However, 7 d after rehydration PN in SAG:ZOG (upper and middle leaves) and 35S:ZOG (upper leaves) was higher than that in WT plants. Increased content of endogenous CKs in 35S:ZOG plants did not prevent their response to ABA application and the results obtained did not support concept of CK antagonism of ABA-induced stomatal closure. The chlorophyll (Chl) a+b content was mostly higher in both transgenics than in WT. During water stress and subsequent rehydration it remained unchanged in upper leaves, decreased slightly in middle leaves only of WT, while rapidly in lower leaves. Total degradation of Chl, carotenoids and xanthophyll cycle pigments (XCP) was found under severe water stress in lower leaves. Carotenoid and XCP contents in middle and upper leaves mostly increased during development of water stress and decreased after rehydration. While β-carotene content was mostly higher in WT, neoxanthin content was higher in transgenics especially in 35S:ZOG under severe stress and after rehydration. The higher content of XCP and degree of their deepoxidation were usually found in upper and middle leaves than in lower leaves with exception of SAG:ZOG plants during mild water stress.  相似文献

Gas exchange characteristics and chlorophyll fluorescence of the Canarian endemic pine ( Pinus canariensis) were measured during the day for a year in a field stand on Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. Diurnal tendencies of gas exchange were variable depending on ambient conditions. In general they paralleled photosynthetic photon flux density with only one peak at midday, except on summer days with high air vapour pressure deficit (VPD), when needles exhibited a severe midday depression of CO 2 assimilation rate ( A), in parallel with a reduction of stomatal conductance ( g s). The internal CO 2 concentration tendencies during the day suggest that stomatal closure was the main cause of the midday depression of photosynthesis. Chlorophyll fluorescence data corroborate this assertion, with the parameter F v/ F m reaching high values throughout day and year. P. canariensis living in the sub-tropic exhibited high values of A (maximal A value of 17 µmol m -2 s -1) and high optimal needle temperature for photosynthesis (25°C) which were at the upper limit of the values given for conifers and similar only to data obtained for some pine species adapted to habitats at similar latitudes. g s was reduced to half when VPD attained 40 mbar, allowing this pine to have high A/ g s values during high evaporative demand conditions.  相似文献

Photosynthetic characteristics were compared between plants of low altitude (LA) grown at LA (Palampur; 1 300 m) and at high altitude, HA (Kibber; 4 200 m), and plants naturally occurring at different altitudes (Palampur, 1 300 m; Palchan, 2 250 m; and Marhi, 3 250 m). Net photosynthetic rate (P N) was not significantly different between altitudes. However, the slopes of the curve relating P N to intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) were higher in plants at Palchan, Marhi, and Kibber compared to those at Palampur, indicating that plants had higher efficiency of carbon uptake (the initial slope of P N/C i curve is an indication) at HA. They had also higher stomatal conductance (g s), transpiration rate, and lower water use efficiency at HA. g s was insensitive to photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) for plants naturally occurring at Palampur, Palchan, and Marhi, whereas plants from LA grown at Palampur and Kibber responded linearly to increasing PPFD. Insensitivity of g s to PPFD could be one of the adaptive features allowing wider altitudinal distribution of the plants. This research is supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India vide grant number BT/PR/502/AGR/08/39/966-VI.  相似文献

Recently, the prenyltransferase SirD was found to be responsible for the O-prenylation of tyrosine in the biosynthesis of sirodesmin PL in Leptosphaeria maculans. In this study, the behavior of SirD towards phenylalanine/tyrosine and tryptophan derivatives was investigated. Product formation has been observed with 12 of 19 phenylalanine/tyrosine derivatives. It was shown that the alanine structure attached to the benzene ring and an electron donor, e.g., OH or NH2, at its para-position are essential for the enzyme activity. Modifications were possible both at the side chain and the benzene ring. Enzyme products from seven phenylalanine/tyrosine derivatives were isolated and characterized by MS and NMR analyses including HSQC and HMBC and proven to be O- or N-prenylated derivatives at position C4 of the benzene rings. K M values of six selected derivatives were found in the range of 0.10–0.68 mM. Catalytic efficiencies (K cat/K M ) were determined in the range of 430–1,110 s−1·M−1 with l-tyrosine as the best substrate. In addition, 7 of 14 tested tryptophan analogs were also accepted by SirD and converted to C7-prenylated derivatives, which was confirmed by comparison with products obtained from enzyme assays using a 7-dimethylallyltryptophan synthase 7-DMATS from Aspergillus fumigatus.  相似文献

Photosynthetic induction times and photoinhibition in relation to simulated sunflecks (sudden increase of irradiance from 20 to 1,500 μmol m−2 s−1) were examined in leaves of co-occurring Fagus lucida (a deciduous tree) and Castanopsis lamontii (an evergreen tree) saplings grown either in a beech forest understory or in an adjacent open site during a late rainy season. Two hypotheses were tested: (1) understory leaves would display faster photosynthetic induction times and greater photoinhibition than open-grown leaves; and (2) evergreen species would have slower photosynthetic induction times and lighter photoinhibition than deciduous species. Times to reach 90% of maximal CO2 assimilation rate (t 90%A ) and stomatal conductance did not differ between species, but showed faster by 3–5 min in open-grown leaves than understory leaves due to higher initial stomatal conductance (g s initial) and induction state 1 min into simulated sunflecks (IS1min) in the former. Our analysis across the published data on photosynthetic induction of 48 broad-leaved woody species again revealed the negative correlations between t 90%A and either g s initial or IS1min, and the similarity of t 90%A and between evergreen and deciduous species. Measurements of maximum PSII photochemical efficiency (F v/F m) indicated that photoinhibition occurred in saplings in any of the growth habitats during sunfleck-induced photosynthetic induction. Despite no interspecific differences in the degree of photoinhibition, understory leaves of both species suffered heavier photoinhibition than open-grown leaves, as indicated by a stronger decrease of F v/F m in the former. Dynamic changes in the quantum yields of PSII photochemistry and ΔpH- and xanthophyll-regulated thermal dissipation and adjustments in the partitioning of electron flow between assimilative and non-assimilative processes were functional to resist photoinhibition. However, such photoinhibition, together with stomatal and biochemical limitations, would decrease carbon gain during simulated sunflecks, particularly in understory leaves.  相似文献

We observed the phenomenon of midday depression in the rate of tree root respiration. Diurnal changes in the root respiration rate of Quercus crispula and Chamaecyparis obtusa were measured under intact conditions using a closed chamber method and a soil respiration measurement system (LI-6400 with a root respiration chamber) in a forest in the foothills of Mt. Fuji. After the measurement of intact root respiration in the field, the root was excised and taken to the laboratory, and the temperature dependence on the respiration rate of the detached root was measured using an open-flow gas exchange system with an infrared gas analyzer (LI-6252). The measurement was conducted in September 2003, August and November 2005, and June 2006. Whereas the root respiration rate of both species under intact conditions increased with increasing soil and root temperatures from dawn to early morning, the respiration rate decreased around midday from 10:00 to 15:00 despite an increment of soil and root temperatures. There was no clear relationship between the intact root respiration rate and root temperature in either species, although the detached root respiration rate of both increased exponentially with the temperature. The amount of the CO2 efflux estimated using the temperature dependence of detached root respiration tended to underestimate the actual measurement value (intact respiration rate) by 20–50% in both species. These results indicate that evaluating midday depression in root respiration would be important for a more accurate estimation of the carbon cycle or net ecosystem production in forests.  相似文献

Macaranga is a tree genus that includes many species of myrmecophytes, which are plants that harbor ant colonies within hollow structures known as domatia. The symbiotic ants (plant–ants) protect their host plants against herbivores; this defense mechanism is called ‘ant defense’. A Bornean phasmid species Orthomeria cuprinus feeds on two myrmecophytic Macaranga species, Macaranga beccariana and Macaranga hypoleuca, which are obligately associated with Crematogaster ant species. The phasmids elude the ant defense using specialized behavior. However, the mechanisms used by the phasmid to overcome ant defenses have been insufficiently elucidated. We hypothesized that O. cuprinus only feeds on individual plants with weakened ant defenses. To test the hypothesis, we compared the ant defense intensity in phasmid-infested and non-infested M. beccariana trees. The number of plant–ants on the plant surface, the ratio of plant–ant biomass to tree biomass, and the aggressiveness of plant–ants towards experimentally introduced herbivores were significantly lower on the phasmid-infested trees than on the non-infested trees. The phasmid nymphs experimentally introduced into non-infested trees, compared with those experimentally introduced into phasmid-infested trees, were more active on the plant surface, avoiding the plant–ants. These results support the hypothesis and suggest that ant defenses on non-infested trees effectively prevent the phasmids from remaining on the plants. Thus, we suggest that O. cuprinus feeds only on the individual M. beccariana trees having decreased ant defenses, although the factors that reduce the intensity of the ant defenses remain unclear.  相似文献

Diurnal and seasonal trends in net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g), transpiration rate (E), vapour pressure deficit, temperature, photosynthetic photon flux density, and water use efficiency (WUE) were compared in a two-year-old Dalbergia sissoo and Hardwickia binata plantation. Mean daily maximum P N in D. sissoo ranged from 21.40±2.60 μmol m−2 s−1 in rainy season I to 13.21±2.64 μmol m−2 s−1 in summer whereas in H. binata it was 20.04±1.20 μmol m−2 s−1 in summer and 13.64±0.16 μmol m−2 s−1 in winter. There was a linear relationship between daily maximum P N and g s in D. sissoo but there was no strong linear relationship between P N and g s in H. binata. In D. sissoo, the reduction in g s led to a reduction in both P N and E enabling the maintenance of WUE during dry season thereby managing unfavourable environmental conditions efficiently whereas in H. binata, an increase in g s causes an increase of P N and E with a significant moderate WUE.  相似文献

Insect herbivory has variable effects on plant physiology; so greater understanding is needed about how injury alters photosynthesis on individual injured and uninjured leaves. Gas exchange and light-adapted leaf chlorophyll fluorescence measurements were collected from uninjured and mechanical partial leaf defoliation in two experiments with Nerium oleander (Apocynaceae) leaves, and one experiment with Danaus plexippus herbivory on Asclepias curassavica (Asclepiadaceae) leaves. Gas exchange impairment (lower photosynthetic rate (P n ), stomatal conductance (g s)) indicates water stress in a leaf, suggests stomatal limitations causing injury P n impairment. The same pattern of gas exchange impairment also occurred on uninjured leaves opposite from injured leaves in both N. oleander experiments. This is an interesting result because photosynthetic impairment is rarely reported on injured leaves near injured leaves. No photosynthetic changes occurred in uninjured A. curassavica leaves opposite from D. plexippus-fed leaves. Partially defoliated leaves that had P n and g s reductions lacked any significant changes in intercellular leaf [CO2], C i. These results neither support, nor are sufficient to reject, stomatal limitations to photosynthesis. Manually imposed midrib vein severance in N. oleander experiment #1 significantly increased leaf C i, indicating mesophyll limitations to photosynthesis. Maximal light-adapted leaf photochemical efficiency () and also non-photochemical quenching (q N) were reduced by mechanical or insect herbivory to both study species, suggesting leaf trouble handling excess light energy not used for photochemistry. Midrib injury on N. oleander leaves and D. plexippus herbivory on A. curassavica leaves also reduced effective quantum yield (ΦPSII) and photochemical quenching (q P); so reduced plastoquinone pools could lead to additional PSII reaction center closure.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), water use efficiency (WUE), stomatal conductance (gs), and stomatal limitation (Ls) were investigated in two Syringa species. The saturation irradiance (SI) was 400 µmol m-2s-1 for S. pinnatifolia and 1 700 µmol m-2s-1 for S. oblata. Compared with S. oblata, S. pinnatifolia had extremely low g s . Unlike S. oblata, the maximal photosynthetic rate (Pmax) in S. pinnatifoliaoccurred around 08:00 and then fell down, indicating this species was sensitive to higher temperature and high photosynthetic photon flux density. However, such phenomenon was interrupted by the leaf development rhythms before summer. A relatively lower PN together with a lower leaf area and shoot growth showed the capacity for carbon assimilation was poorer in S. pinnatifolia.  相似文献

Mangrove partitioning and storage of macronutrients and trace metals were examined in different arid coastal settings of Western Australia. Total living biomass in three Rhizophora stylosa forests, which ranged from 233 to 289 t DW ha-1, was significantly greater than biomass in three Avicennia marina forests (range: 79-155 t DW ha-1). Although prop roots and stems were the largest single tree components for R. stylosa and A. marina, respectively, most nutrients were stored in leaves and living roots of both species. However, only a small fraction of the total nutrient pool was vested in tree biomass; the vast bulk was in soils. A large below-ground pool of dead fine roots was identified at all stands, equivalent to 36-88% DW of total living tree biomass. The amount of Ca, S, Cl, Na, Si, Fe, Mn, Zn, B, Mo and Cu vested in dead roots of both species was greater than in the total living tree biomass. The proportion of Fe and S vested in live and dead roots was exceptionally large, consistent with previous evidence of metal plaques on mangrove roots. Sulphur, iron and zinc in dead roots of both species constituted the bulk of these metals. R. stylosa trees preferentially accumulated more Mg, S, Cl, Na, Si, Fe, Mn, B and Mo than A. marina trees. Proportionally greater storage of P, N, Ca, K, Cu and Zn occurred in two of the three A. marina forests. Foliar concentrations of Mg, S, Mn, B and Mo in mangrove leaves were at the high end of the range reported for other tropical trees, but other elemental concentrations were at the low or mid-range. Nitrogen limitation in these forests is implied by a positive correlation between total tree N and net canopy production and by a lower percentage of ecosystem N in tree biomass as compared with other forests. Unlike terrestrial forests where a large proportion of nutrient capital is vested in floor litter, most elements in these mangrove forests are stored in dead roots. A large reservoir of dead roots below the forest floor may serve as a conservation mechanism, particularly in such arid oligotrophic environments.  相似文献

Plants differ in how much the response of net photosynthetic rate (P N) to temperature (T) changes with the T during leaf development, and also in the biochemical basis of such changes in response. The amount of photosynthetic acclimation to T and the components of the photosynthetic system involved were compared in Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica oleracea to determine how well A. thaliana might serve as a model organism to study the process of photosynthetic acclimation to T. Responses of single-leaf gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence to CO2 concentration measured over the range of 10–35 °C for both species grown at 15, 21, and 27 °C were used to determine the T dependencies of maximum rates of carboxylation (VCmax), photosynthetic electron transport (Jmax), triose phosphate utilization rate (TPU), and mesophyll conductance to carbon dioxide (gm). In A. thaliana, the optimum T of P N at air concentrations of CO2 was unaffected by this range of growth T, and the T dependencies of VCmax, Jmax, and gm were also unaffected by growth T. There was no evidence of TPU limitation of P N in this species over the range of measurement conditions. In contrast, the optimum T of P N increased with growth T in B. oleracea, and the T dependencies of VCmax, Jmax, and gm, as well as the T at which TPU limited P N all varied significantly with growth T. Thus B. oleracea had much a larger capacity to acclimate photosynthetically to moderate T than did A. thaliana.  相似文献

Tree-ring studies contribute worldwide to the understanding of climate and its relation to tree growth. Long tree-ring chronologies serve as climate proxies for the reconstruction of past, pre-instrument climate and its recent change. In tropical regions, the availability of exactly dated tree-ring chronologies is limited. The dendroclimatic potential of two dominant species from dry forests in northern Namibia was examined in the study presented in this paper. Both species (Burkea africana Hook and Pterocarpus angolensis DC) were sampled at two sites (ca. 900 km apart), and the response to several climatic variables, including ENSO indices, is studied. All specimens showed distinct growth rings and cross-dating between radii was successful for all trees. Species-specific mean curves were built for both sites. The mean curves of different species of the same site synchronised significantly, allowing the construction of a site-specific chronology. Synchronisation between sites was not possible, but spectral analysis of the chronologies implied that both show similar long-term (6.7 year) oscillation patterns. B. africana is more sensitive to rainfall variation than P. angolensis at both sites. Growth response to rainfall was positive, but a time-lag in the reaction occurred between the sites, corresponding to the time-lag of the beginning of the rainy season. Air temperature showed a negative correlation with stem increment at both sites. The response at the westernmost site to two ENSO indices indicates a tree growth decrease during El Niño years, which are generally dry in southern Africa.  相似文献
