Bacteria isolated from surface sea waters, brackish waters and from algal cultures were classified in nutritional clusters. Results obtained with an hierarchical method were improved by using the correspondence analysis. The former main statements appear confirmed and new informations are pointed out, mainly concerning the organic compounds which are the best indexes of the nutritional characteristics; e. g. a few organic acids and amino-acids can be used to estimate the versatility of bacteria; it also appears that strains which preferentially assimilate substrates of one chemical group, do not easily attack substances of other groups.  相似文献

The detection of, and response to, parasitized hosts by female parasitoids can involve a number of complex phenomena, including the ability of females to discriminate between unparasitized and parasitized hosts, the physiological state of females, and the nature and longevity of the cues they are detecting. The discriminatory ability of Opius dimidiatus,a solitary endoparasitoid of Liriomyza trifoliiwas examined. Experiments showed, first, that when presented with a choice of unparasitized hosts and hosts which they had previously parasitized, O. dimidiatusfemales could discriminate between them, both upon encounter (before probing) and after probing with the ovipositor. It was further demonstrated that the detection of parasitized hosts was time dependent: females could discriminate on the basis of antennal examination for up to 2.5 h after the first egg was laid. Postprobing discrimination lasted for up to 3.5 h. Some of the causal and evolutionary factors resulting in superparasitism are discussed.  相似文献

In autoparasitoids, females are generally primary endoparasitoids of Hemiptera, while males are hyperparasitoids developing in or on conspecific females or other primary parasitoids. Female‐host acceptance can be influenced by extrinsic and/or intrinsic factors. In this paper, we are concerned with intrinsic factors such as nutritional status, mating status, etc. We observed the behavior of Encarsia pergandiella Howard (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) females when parasitizing primary (3rd instar larvae of Bemisia tabaci Gennadius [Homoptera: Aleyrodidae]) and secondary hosts (3rd instar larvae and pupae of Eretmocerus mundus Mercet [Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae]) for a period of 1 h. Females had different reproductive (virgin or mated younger) and physiological (fed elder or mated elder) status. Virgin females killed a large number of secondary hosts while investing a long time per host. However, they did not feed upon them. Mated females killed a lower number of secondary hosts and host feeding was observed in both consuming primary and secondary hosts. It was common to observe host examining females of all physiological statues tested repeatedly stinging the same hosts when parasitizing, killing or rejecting them. Fed elder females parasitized more B. tabaci larvae than E. mundus larvae or pupae, while investing less time on the primary host than on the secondary host. They also parasitized more B. tabaci larvae than mated elder females, while investing less time per host. The access of females to honey allowed them to lay more eggs.  相似文献

Based on the geographical distribution of the species of Phacellaria and its host plants in the world, we speculated on the possible time, sites, and migration of the origin of Phacellaria. The host plants of Phacellaria mainly belong to Loranthaceae. Plants of Phacellaria and their hosts are mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical areas. The plants of Phacellariamight have originated from a tropical area in the south of China before the Tertiary. Their ancestors were parasitic on the ancestors of some plants of Loranthaceae by chance during the Tertiary. It possibly took them millions of years to form a sturdy relationship with their hosts. All Stylonychia mytilus-like ciliates which were collected and sent to us during the last 20 years belonged either to S. mytilus or to a new species, S. lemnae, which is described here. The only morphological differences are the shape and the size. Stylonychia mytilus that have been starved for one day average 300 μm in length, and S. lemnae starved for a day are 230 μm long. The occurrence of mating types is described.  相似文献

For almost all groups of pathogens, unusual and rare host species have been reported. Often, such associations are based on single or few collections only, which are frequently hard to access. Many of them later prove to be due to misidentification of the host, the pathogen, or both. Therefore, such reports are often disregarded, or treated anecdotally in taxonomic and phylogenetic studies, regardless of their potential importance to unravelling the evolution of the entire group. Concerning oomycete biotrophs there are several reports of unusual and rare hosts for hardly known pathogens. In the order Fabales, for example, a single species of Albugo, A. mauginii, was described as parasitic to Onobrychis crista-galli about 80 years ago, but not recorded again. All other confirmed members of Albugo s.str. are parasitic to representatives of the families Brassicaceae, Capparaceae, Cleomaceae, and Resedaceae in the order Brassicales. In the present study, molecular phylogenetic analysis of cox2 mtDNA sequences and morphological investigations on an original specimen confirmed the occurrence of a member of Albugo on Fabaceae hosts, with the characteristic thin wall of the secondary sporangia, which is almost uniform in thickness. In phylogenetic analyses the species results as embedded within Albugo s.str. Therefore, it is concluded that the natural host range of Albugo s.str. extends from Brassicales to Fabales via host jumping. Our results underscore that unrevised reports of pathogens from unusual hosts should be reconsidered carefully to obtain a more complete picture of pathogen diversity and evolution.  相似文献

Summary A new species of a cephalobaenid pentastomid infecting the lungs of a toad, Bufo lemur, from Puerto Rico is described. The single infection comprises all stages from infective larvae to mature males and females and therefore we consider the toad to be a definitive host. We reassess the evidence concerning Raillietiella indica Gedoelst, 1921, another raillietiellid from the lungs of an Indian toad, B. melanostictus which, hitherto, has been considered by most authors an immature stage from an intermediate host. It now appears that the type specimen was probably a gravid female and that R. indica is a valid species which also matures in a toad. Thus amphibians are established as a new class of definitive hosts for pentastomids. ac]19820218  相似文献

Abstract

Viscum album L. ssp. album is semi-parasitic on deciduous trees and shrubs. In order to identify hosts and map the distribution of V. album ssp. album in Croatia and Slovenia, field research was carried out, and herbaria were surveyed. In Croatia and Slovenia, V. album ssp. album occurred on 59 taxa. In Croatia, there were 52 hosts (33 autochthonous and 15 allochthonous species, two cultivars and two hybrids). In Slovenia, there were 25 hosts (21 autochthonous and four allochthonous species). There were 18 hosts common to both countries, 34 hosts were found only in Croatia, and seven hosts only in Slovenia. The hosts belonged to 13 families. The majority of these (19 species) belong to the Rosaceae, followed by Salicaceae, Aceraceae, Betulaceae, Fagaceae, Juglandaceae, Tiliaceae, Hippocastanaceae, Ulmaceae, Oleaceae, Fabaceae, Moraceae and Viscaceae. All hosts have been previously recorded in the literature, except Alnus japonica (Thunb.) Steud., Amelanchier lamarckii F.G. Schroed. and Crataegus nigra Waldst. et Kit. The distribution of this mistletoe was scattered, due to the scattered distribution of hosts, local conditions, movement of bird-vectors, etc. A continuous distribution was found only in part of the distribution area of narrow-leaved ash (Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl).  相似文献

Summary Four hybrid plasmids were constructed from the cryptic plasmid pAM330 (from Brevibacterium lactofermentum; 4.5 kb) and the broadhost-range plasmid pGV1106 (9.0 kb; Kmr Smr) isolated from Escherichia coli. All of them were mobilized from E. coli into the Gram-negative methylotrophic bacterium Methylobacillus sp. and two of these constructs (pCEM300 and pCEM400) were transferred by transformation into B. flavum and Corynebacterium glutamicum. Their kanamycin-resistance determinant coming from Gram-negative hosts was expressed in these Gram-positive bacteria. Both pCEM300 and pCEM400 are very stably maintained in B. flavum and represent suitable vectors for gene cloning in coryneform producers of amino acids.  相似文献

The behavioural and physiological responses of the synovigenic parasitoid, Dinarmus basalis (Rond.) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), were investigated whilst the wasps were submitted to conflicting oviposition stimuli: an environment which induced them to restrict egg-laying and a physiological factor, egg-load pressure, which induced them to lay eggs. When individual females depleted patches containing hosts parasitized 24 h or 72 h beforehand, they laid preferentially on unparasitized hosts and the number of eggs laid decreased significantly. Although they remained for several days in such patches, egg-load pressure did not lead them to modify their strategy (i.e. to accept all the available hosts including the already parasitized ones). In this synovigenic species, the oviposition constraint resulted in the retention of oocytes. Dissection and histological observation showed that the unlaid eggs are resorbed, a reproductive regulatory process which has seldom previously been reported in the presence of unparasitized hosts. This physiological response was induced by the mere presence of the parasitized hosts rather than their density. The females’ response was also influenced by the presence of conspecifics. They still avoided laying on parasitized hosts but the number of eggs laid daily became comparable to that observed in patches containing only unparasitized hosts. Thus, D. basalis females adapted their strategy in response to their environment, in which the most significant factor seemed to be the quality of the hosts provided, and their physiology. The originality and the importance of these results are discussed.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to test the vectorial competence of Amblyomma tonelliae (Ixodida: Ixodidae) to transmit Rickettsia rickettsii (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae), the agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF). All parasitic stages of A. tonelliae were exposed to R. rickettsii by allowing each stage to feed on hosts inoculated with this pathogen. Thereafter, ticks were fed on uninfected hosts. All stages of A. tonelliae were able to acquire the R. rickettsii infection and maintain it by transstadial and transovarial transmission. When infected ticks fed on uninfected hosts, the hosts developed rickettsiosis disease. This study demonstrates the vectorial competence of A. tonelliae to transmit R. rickettsii. These results have epidemiological relevance because A. tonelliae is one of the tick species most likely to infest humans in Argentina, including in areas in which RMSF has been reported.  相似文献

Insect parasitoids developing inside hosts face a true challenge: hosts are scattered in the field and their localization and selection require the use of complex and sometime confusing information. It was assumed for a long time that small-brained organisms like parasitoids have evolved simple and efficient behavioral mechanisms, leading them to be adapted to a given ecological situation, for example, the spatial distribution o f hosts in the habitat. However, hosts are not static and their distribution may also vary through generations and within the life of parasitoid individuals. We investigated if and how parasitoids deal with such a spatial com plexity in a m esocosm experiment. We used the Aphidius rhopalosiphi/Sitobion avenae parasitoid/host system to investigate if parasitoid females experiencing different host aggregation levels exhibit different foraging behaviors independently of the number of hosts in the environment. We showed that A. rhopalosiphi females exploited hosts more intensively both within and among patches at higher host aggregation levels. We discussed the adaptiveness of such behaviors in the light of evolution and biological control.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Vairimorpha invictae n. sp. infects the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, in Brazil. The parasite is dimorphic, producing two morphologically distinct types of spores, which develop sequentially in the same fat cells or oenocytes in the fat body. The binucleate free spores develop from disporous sporonts; the uninucleate octospores develop from multinucleate sporonts within a sporophorous vesicle. Infected cells are transformed into large sacs which contain both types of spores in mature adult hosts. Mature free spores are often present by the time the larvae pupate, but mature octospores are found only in adult hosts. Masses of spores may be seen through the intact cuticle by low power phase-contrast microscopy; there are no other physical signs and no behavioral signs of infection. Attempts to transmit the infection in the laboratory failed.  相似文献

Wilson and Lessells (1993) analysed the effect of constraint assumptions on the predictions of static optimality models for insect clutch size. They concluded that the models could be reliably distinguished between (and hence the main constraints identified) only after precise quantitative predictions had been examined. The present paper describes a series of laboratory experiments, using the bruchid beetle Callosobruchus maculatus, that allow these quantitative predictions to be made and tested. Experiments in which female encounter rate with hosts was altered gave qualitative support for 3 out of 6 basic (single oviposition) models, but the quantitative fit of them all was poor. However, when the (a priori) condition was included in these models that several other females would oviposit on the same hosts (the multiple oviposition models), the time limiting multiple oviposition model alone produced quantitative predictions that were supported by observations. In other words, the results suggest that the main constraints on bruchid oviposition behaviour are the amount of time available for laying eggs and the number of other females ovipositing. However, additional qualitative predictions indicate that the number of eggs available to the female may also constrain clutch size evolutionarily. The usefulness of static optimality models for examining clutch size decisions in insects is discussed in the context of these results.  相似文献

Parasites with indirect life cycles require trophic transmission from intermediate hosts to definitive (vertebrate) hosts. Transmission may be facilitated if parasite infection alters the behavior of intermediate hosts such that they are more vulnerable to predation. Vulnerability to predation may also be influenced by abiotic factors; however, rarely are the effects of parasites and abiotic factors examined simultaneously. The swash zone of sandy beaches is a particularly harsh environment. Sand crabs (Emerita analoga) burrow rapidly in the swash zone to avoid predators and dislodgment. We examined prevalence and abundance of the acanthocephalan parasite Profilicollis altmani in sand crabs, and investigated the synergistic effects of sand grain size (an important abiotic factor), parasite infection, body size and reproductive condition on burrowing speed in females, from three California sites. More heavily parasitized crabs burrowed more slowly, making them potentially more vulnerable to predation by marine bird definitive hosts. Ovigerous females harbored more parasites than non-ovigerous females, but burrowed more quickly. All crabs burrowed slowest in the coarsest sand, and burrowing times increased with repeated testing, suggesting that it is energetically costly. Abiotic and biotic factors influence burrowing, and behavioral variation across sites may reflect the response to natural variation in these factors.  相似文献

Motivation-based models dominate current theory concerning host plant selection for oviposition by herbivorous insects. A female searching for a host plant will be more likely to accept a host which is of inferior quality for her offspring if motivation is high, e.g. a large eggload or long time since last oviposition. This implies that insects will accumulate eggs if exposed to hosts of low acceptability and after a time lay eggs on such hosts. An alternative strategy for insects when exposed to less acceptable hosts is to stop producing, instead of accumulating, eggs. Thus, resources would be saved until a more acceptable host is found. If this hypothesis is true, a herbivorous insect would cease egg production when exposed to hosts of low acceptability and resume egg production when exposed to hosts of high acceptability. Previous exposure should not affect oviposition rate when an insect encounters a new host of a different quality. In an earlier study pollen beetles, Meligethes aeneus (F.) (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), did not accumulate eggs in the absence of high quality hosts. In this study we monitored the daily oviposition rate of female pollen beetles on hosts plants of low (Sinapis alba L.), intermediate (Brassica nigra Koch) or high (B. napus L.) acceptability over a 5-day period. Individuals were then switched to an oviposition resource of a different acceptability. Beetles moved from high- to low-acceptability plants reduced their oviposition rate considerably. In the opposite case, low to high acceptability, the rate of oviposition increased markedly after the switch. When M. aeneus were moved from the high-acceptability host to that of intermediate acceptability oviposition rate was modified accordingly. However, when moved to the intermediate host from a host of low acceptability oviposition on B. nigra was much less than would normally be expected. A possible mechanism for this finding is discussed. M. aeneus, by adjusting oviposition rate to host acceptability, maximizes the average host quality for offspring, even at the cost of a lower egg-laying rate. Host rejection, superparasitism, and ovicide are three possible host selection strategies that parasitoid females can adopt when they encounter parasitized hosts. These differ in costs (in terms of time and energy required) and benefits (in terms of number and quality of offspring produced). Their relative payoff should vary with patch quality, (i.e., proportion of parasitized hosts present), and female choice between them should be adapted accordingly. We conducted behavioral observations to test the effect of the ratio of parasitized/unparasitized hosts present in a patch on the host selection strategies of Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae Rondani (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae). This species being a generalist known to attack hosts of a great range of size, we also tested the impact of host size on female decisions with two host species differing greatly in size (Drosophila melanogaster and Delia radicum). We evaluated the adaptive value of each strategy in relation to host parasitization status and host size by measuring their duration and the potential number of offspring produced.  相似文献

A systematic account is given of the aquatic gastropod fauna of the lower Okavango River in Namibia and Botswana, and of the East Caprivi area in Namibia, based on collections made mostly in 1983–86 from about 100 different sites. A total of 20 living species are reported, 9 of them for the first time from this area: Bellamya monardi, Lobogenes michaelis, Cleopatra elata, Afrogyrus coretus, Segmentorbis angustus, S. kanisaensis, Bulinus scalaris, B. depressus and B. tropicus. All are found outside this area and most are widely distributed Afrotropical species. Some do not occur farther south than the Okavango Delta, while others reach a south-western limit here but occur at greater latitude in the eastern tropical corridor on the coast of Natal. Bulinus globosus and Biomphalaria pfeifferi occur throughout the study area and are intermediate hosts for schistosome parasites of man and livestock.  相似文献

Gynonectria intraspora is described as a new monotypic genus of the Hypocreales (Ascomycetes). Relatively large perithecia form individually within the perianths of the hepatic Odontolejeunea sp. (Lejeuneaceae, Porellales), which grow in the phyllosphere of living vascular plants in the rainforests of Costa Rica and Panama. As in other hyperepiphyllous perianthicolous species, hyphae concentrate in the region of the sporophyte–gametophyte junction. They prevent sporophyte maturation, but do not visibly affect the leafy gametophyte. The most intriguing character of G. intraspora is exhibited by the ascospores. While they are still in the asci, each of them cleaves two new spores within its lumina leaving residual primary spore plasma around them. This novel spore type is comparable to the endoconidia of black meristematic fungi and is called an "intraspore". The formation of intraspores together with other features seem to indicate that the obligate hyperepiphyllous Hypocreales are undergoing an active evolutionary process of diversification, as are their epiphyllous lejeuneaceous hosts.  相似文献

Controversy exists concerning whether cattle and water buffalo sustain infections with cysts of distinct arrays of species in the genus Sarcocystis. In particular, morphologically similar parasites have been alternately ascribed to Sarcocystis cruzi or to Sarcocystis levinei, depending on their occurrence in cattle or water buffalo. We used light and transmission electron microscopy, genetic analysis, and experimental infections of definitive canine hosts to determine whether consistent differences could be identified from parasites derived from several natural infections of each host, examining several tissue types (esophagus, skeletal muscles, and heart). Cysts derived from cattle and water buffalo shared similar structure; variation among 18S rRNA sequences did not segregate consistently according to intermediate host type; parasites derived from cattle and water buffalo induced similar outcomes in the canine definitive host. One cattle specimen harbored unusually large (macroscopic) sarcocysts which nonetheless conformed to previously reported ultrastructural and genetic features of S. cruzi. Finding no consistent basis to differentiate between them, we conclude that the parasites infecting each host and tissue type correspond to S. cruzi. In our sample, no phylogenetically distinct taxon was sampled which might correspond to a distinct taxon previously described as S. levinei. Either that taxon was missed by our sampling effort, or it may represent a junior synonym to S. cruzi, which would then cycle between dogs and a broader range of intermediate bovine hosts than was previously considered.  相似文献
