Ecological distribution of four co-occurring Mediterranean heath species   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Erica australis, E. scoparia, E. arborea and Calluna vulgaris are the most abundant heath species on acid, sandstone-derived soils of the Strait of Gibraltar region (southern Spain and northern Morocco). Despite their apparently similar ecological requirements, these four species are somewhat ecologically segregated. Erica australis is abundant only on poor, shallow soils, with a high content in soluble aluminium, generally on mountain ridges and summits. Erica scoparia becomes dominant on deeper sandstone soils with lower aluminium. Calluna vulgaris coexists with these Erica species in communities under low or no tree cover. In the Spanish side of the Strait (Algeciras), Erica arborea tends to be relegated to communities under moderate to dense tree cover, whereas this species is more abundant and widespread in the Moroccan side (Tangier). Tolerance to extreme physical conditions - high aluminium and dense tree cover - and interspecific competition seem to explain the ecological distribution of these four heath species in the Strait of Gibraltar region. The more fragmented pattern of sandstone patches and higher disturbance levels in Tangier might account for the differences in the patterns of ecological distribution of these four heath species between both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar.  相似文献

The phenolic composition of different populations of Erica andevalensis,E. australis and E. arborea was analyzed according to the different degree of exposition to metals in soils. E. andevalensis populations, highly exposed to metal pollution, had the lowest total phenol content and the lowest antioxidant activity measured as trolox equivalents. The HPLC analysis of leaf extracts revealed that phenolic composition in all analyzed populations of E. australis and E. arborea was very similar, although wild populations were differentially exposed to metal pollutions. However, E. andevalensis showed a phenolic profile characterized by the absence of many phenolic compounds quantified in the other species, although two compounds derived from cinnamic and coumaric acids were exclusively observed in this species.  相似文献

Post-fire sprouting of dormant buds in resprouter plants is facilitated by stored carbohydrate reserves, with starch being the critical reserve. Starch is mainly stored in xylem parenchyma ray tissue of woody underground organs, such as burls, lignotubers, and roots. We carried out a comparative analysis of the pattern of starch storage and the proportion of parenchymatic ray tissue in the upper root or cotyledonary region of seedlings from seeder and resprouter forms within two Cape Erica (Ericaceae) species: E. coccinea L. and E. calycina L., which were raised in the greenhouse under controlled irrigation. We also explored the root-to-shoot allocation patterns of seeder and resprouter seedlings in these two species. Resprouter seedlings of both species showed higher relative amounts of upper-root starch and upper-root storage tissue as well as a higher root-to-shoot allocation than their seeder counterparts. Pronounced swelling of the upper root region suggests ontogenetic development of a lignotuber in the resprouter forms of the two Erica species. The distinct allocation of starch in roots seems to be genetically determined and would account for the apparent differences in the root-to-shoot allocation patterns between both regeneration forms from the early seedling stage.  相似文献

Summary The phytochemical action of Erica scoparia L. upon its environment was studied. The toxicity of biogenic heath products on red clover seedlings was demonstrated by biological tests. Ten phenolic hydrosoluble compounds were identified; p-Hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, syringic, caffeic, ferulic, p-coumaric, protocatechuic, genetisic, and 2-hydroxyphenyl acetic acid, as well as 2,4-dihydroxyphenyl acetonitrile. The suppression of herbs, especially grasses, in heathlands can be explained, at least partially, by the allelopathic effects of E. scoparia L.  相似文献

1. The colonisation of a new habitat by a community is led by deterministic and stochastic processes at different spatio-temporal scales. Parasitic plants, such as mistletoe, represent a new habitat within forest canopy that is free to be colonised by many organisms. 2. This study investigates how ecological factors operating at forest and plant scales drive changes in both specialist (mistletoe-dwelling) and tourist (transient visitors) arthropod communities inhabiting European mistletoe, Viscum album subsp. austriacum, in a Mediterranean pine forest. The influence of elevation along a broad elevational gradient was tested by sampling arthropod communities dwelling in mistletoe plants and host pine branches and the effects of mistletoe plant size, distances to other mistletoes, and temporal variation in arthropod assemblages inhabiting mistletoes. 3. The diversity of the specialist community remained constant along the elevational gradient and over the summer period, while the tourist and pine-dwelling arthropod communities showed species turnover. Larger mistletoes were occupied by more species and individuals, whereas more isolated mistletoes presented the same equilibrium point as the more aggregated ones. Thus, mistletoe size is key to the composition of the arthropod community. 4. In conclusion, this study's findings indicate contrasting assembly rules for specialised and tourist arthropod communities associated with mistletoe. The specialist community was highly stable and followed a deterministic trophic sequence of colonisation as the assemblage rule: first, colonisation by the main specialist herbivore, Cacopsylla visci, and, second, by its predator Anthocoris visci. Meanwhile, the tourist community, being a subset of the arthropod assemblage of the pine, acts independent of mistletoe presence.  相似文献

Mycorrhiza samples of neighbouring Quercus ilex and Erica arborea plants collected in a postcutting habitat were processed to see whether plants differing in mycorrhizal status harbour the same root endophytes. Three experiments were performed in parallel: (i) isolation, identification and molecular characterization of fungi from surface-sterilized roots of both plant species; (ii) re-inoculation of fungal isolates on axenic E. arborea and Q. ilex seedlings; (iii) direct inoculation of field-collected Q. ilex ectomycorrhizas onto E. arborea seedlings. About 70 and 150 fungal isolates were obtained from roots of Q. ilex and E. arborea, respectively. Among them, Oidiodendron species and five cultural morphotypes of sterile isolates formed typical ericoid mycorrhizas on E. arborea in vitro. Fungi with such mycorrhizal ability were derived from both host plants. Isolates belonging to one of these morphotypes (sd9) also exhibited an unusual pattern of colonization, with an additional extracellular hyphal net. Ericoid mycorrhizas were also readily obtained by direct inoculation of E. arborea seedlings with Q. ilex ectomycorrhizal tips. Polymerase chain-restriction fragment length polymorphism and random amplified polymorphic DNA analyses of the shared sterile morphotypes demonstrate, in the case of sd9, the occurrence of the same genet on the two host plants. These results indicate that ericoid mycorrhizal fungi associate with ectomycorrhizal roots, and the ecological significance of this finding is discussed.  相似文献

The composition of arthropods in trees has long been a topic of interest, with many studies exploring ways in which arthropod communities differ among tree species or entire forests. Few studies, however, have examined arthropods from trees in restoration plantings, and little is known about how different tree plantings might lead to different biodiversity outcomes. The aim of our study was to determine if a focal tree species hosted a different arthropod fauna depending on its context. We examined arthropod assemblages from the foliage of Eucalyptus microcarpa (Grey Box) trees present in two kinds of plantings: (i) simple plantings with only Eucalyptus trees, and (ii) mixed plantings with both Eucalyptus and Acacia trees. We examined the composition of the assemblages, and looked for associations between ant and psyllid (Hemiptera) diversity across each kind of planting. We found more species of psyllids, beetles and ants in E. microcarpa trees when they were grown in simple plantings compared with the mixed species plantings. We also found that psyllid richness and abundance was positively correlated with ant richness and abundance across all plantings. Our study shows that a more diverse context (i.e. a mixed planting) is not necessarily associated with a more diverse fauna within a focal tree species, and that simple Eucalyptus-only plantings may encourage higher numbers of insect herbivores. The apparent association between psyllids and ants suggests a complex interaction that may drive patterns in tree arthropod assemblages.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The genus Erica represents the epitome of plant biodiversity in the South African Cape region. It includes seeder and resprouter species, but both species diversity and narrow endemism are tightly associated with the seeder habit. It also includes 'mixed' species, in which both seeder and resprouter life histories are found. This intraspecific variation in life history is genetically based. METHODS: The cotyledonary region and basal stem of seeder and resprouter seedlings of two 'mixed' species, Erica calycina and E. coccinea, were examined to detect morphological and anatomical differences in axillary bud development between regeneration forms. KEY RESULTS: While at least some bud activity was observed for resprouter seedlings, none was detected for seeder seedlings. A closer examination allowed the detection of some axillary buds in seeder seedlings of the two species, but they appeared in an unequivocally atrophied state. CONCLUSIONS: The seeder and resprouter life histories are two character states and the seeder one (i.e. loss of resprouting) is derived within these two Erica species. Results allow the hypothesis that the loss of resprouting in a fire-prone scenario such as the Cape fynbos has promoted high diversification rates in seeder Erica lineages.  相似文献

The occurrence of suitable mycorrhizal inocula may be an important factor affecting the dynamics of plant communities. We investigated the persistence and diversity of ericoid mycorrhizal fungi in the soil of a mature Quercus ilex forest where ericaceous hosts were absent. Erica arborea was used as a bait plant and results were compared to soil samples from experimental plots where cuttings had allowed reappearance of this ericaceous species. Fungal endophytes were isolated and tested in mycorrhiza resynthesis trials. Sterile mycorrhizal endophytes were assigned to morphotypes whose consistency was confirmed by ITS-RFLP. The ITS region of a representative of each morphotype was sequenced. BLAST searches and Neighbour-Joining analysis indicated taxonomic affinities with different classes within Ascomycota. Our results indicate that ericoid mycorrhizal fungi persist and maintain mycorrhizal ability in habitats lacking the ericaceous host. Their persistence could favour the establishment of E. arborea seedlings in pure Q. ilex forests after disturbance phenomena.  相似文献

Concentrations of starch in roots of seeder species of Erica from the Cape Floristic Region, South Africa were found to be considerably less than in resprouters. Shoot starch was highly variable but mean values were similar in both seeder and resprouter species of Erica . Three distinct patterns of starch storage in roots were recognized. All seeder species fell within definitions of Categories 1 (narrow major and minor parenchymatous rays, one to two cells wide with no inter-ray storage) or 2 (thick major rays up to seven cells wide and thin minor rays with small amounts of inter-ray storage) whereas resprouter species were consistently within Categories 2 or 3 (broad major and minor rays, up to eight cells wide and conspicuous inter-ray starch storage). Results are discussed in light of similar studies of the related Epacridaceae. 'Mixed' species (i.e. with seeder or resprouter individuals present, often in distinct populations) were always classified as belonging to Category 2. Studies of populations of three 'mixed' species confirmed that seeder forms had consistently lower amounts of root starch than resprouters. Rays of xylem parenchyma were the main sites for starch storage in roots of both seeders and resprouters and greater proportions of cross-sectional area of roots were consistently devoted to such storage tissues in resprouter forms of the three 'mixed' species. Analyses of a number of seeder and resprouter Erica coccinea populations showed that differences in amounts of realised and potential root starch storage are best explained by the effect of regeneration behaviour rather than by among-population variability.  相似文献

We determined the limiting climatic factors, as well as the preferred habitats, of Erica tetralix L. at the eastern limit of its distribution range in the eastern Baltic region. It was found that E. tetralix in this region is a typical bog woodland plant preferring the wettest Sphagnum‐rich sites. Northern Atlantic wet heath fragments, base‐rich fens and species‐rich Nardus grasslands were other habitats for the species. The species composition in E. tetralix habitats resembled that found in appropriate habitats within its main distribution range, although the habitats in the eastern Baltic region lack many Atlantic floristic elements characteristic of wet heath. A generalised linear model describing the climatic niche of E. tetralix in Latvia suggests that mild winters, which exhibit a combination of a shallow maximum depth of soil freezing and a large number of days when the air temperature exceeds 0°C, as well as abundant annual and winter precipitation, are the main factors allowing the presence of E. tetralix in Latvia. The climate parameters at the eastern limit of the species’ distribution range are consistent with those recorded as being suitable for E. tetralix elsewhere. Our results reveal a strong relationship between oceanity and the distribution of E. tetralix. The climatic niche model suggests more climatically suitable areas in the Coastal Lowland geobotanical region where the species could potentially be found, most likely in bog woodlands. The future prospects to restore open areas of northern Atlantic wet heath with E. tetralix in Latvia are poor due to the decline in traditional land‐use; these areas have turned into bog woodlands or been converted into agricultural land.  相似文献

Current climate projections predict drier and warmer conditions in the Mediterranean basin over the next century. While advanced spring growth due to warming has been described in the literature, few data are available on the effects of drought on phenology. Hence, the phenology and growth of two Mediterranean shrubs, Erica multiflora and Globularia alypum, was studied in a rainfall exclusion field experiment to simulate spring drought in a natural shrubland. We estimated the onset of growth in spring by monitoring the appearance of new stems, and the end of growth in summer by following the elongation of stems. Drought treatment caused earlier onset of the spring growing season in E. multiflora, whereas no advance was observed in G. alypum. However, growth cessation was not affected in E. multiflora. Drought reduced the growth of both shrubs, as reflected in less stem elongation. The results show that a drier climate might affect not only growth but also spring phenology of some Mediterranean species. We suggest that a reduction in the cooling effect of transpiration may have analogous effects to warming and might advance the start of growth in E. multiflora, a species whose phenology has been described as warming‐sensitive. The lengthening of the growing season resulting from advanced growth did not imply higher productivity, as growth was restricted by drought.  相似文献

A study of the seed morphology of Erica tetralix and the related species E. mackaiana and E. andevalensis was performed to evaluate the taxonomic importance of seed characters. Size and shape of seeds and surface cells were studied, and area, perimeter, main axis lengths, elongation and sinuosity were measured. Levels of intraspecific variation were considered by means of nested analysis of variance. The study of the intraspecific variation of the characters shows significant differences for lower levels, higher than variations between species for most characters. Levels of variation must be based upon the numerical analysis of seed characters for a correct approach to determining systematic value. E. mackaiana and E. andevalensis group together versus E. tetralix for sinuosity of testa cells. This is a good taxonomic character because it shows significant differences between species and no significant differences between populations. E. tetralix has strongly undulated testa cells while E. mackaiana and E. andevalensis have slightly undulated or curved testa cells. These two species can be discriminated by size of the seed, with seeds of 0.37-0.38 mm for E. andevalensis and 0.4 - 0.45 mm for E. mackaiana. Similarities are found in seed morphology for E. mackaiana and E. andevalensis, but we nevertheless consider the species status for the three taxa as the most natural taxonomic assignment. A key to the species is provided.  相似文献

In species‐rich ecosystems, such as subtropical and tropical forests, higher trophic level interactions are key mediators of ecosystem functioning. Plant species loss may alter these interactions, but the effects of plant diversity might be modified by intraguild interactions, particularly among predators. We analyzed the relationships between spiders and ants, two dominant predatory arthropod taxa, on tree saplings across a gradient from medium to high woody plant species richness in a subtropical forest in Southeast China. Neither ant nor spider total biomass was significantly related to plant species richness. By contrast, the biomass distribution of web‐building and hunting spiders changed and spider family richness increased in the presence of ants, resulting in more web builder‐dominated assemblages. However, these relationships depended on the plant communities, and were stronger in plots with higher plant species richness. Our results indicate that in addition to potential effects of ants on hunting spiders in particular, ants could indirectly influence intraguild interactions within spider assemblages. The observed shifts in the spider assemblages with increasing ant presence and plant species richness may have functional consequences, as web‐building and hunting spiders have distinct prey spectra. The relationships among ants, spiders, and plant species richness might contribute to explaining the non‐significant relationship between the overall effects of predators and plant diversity previously observed in the same forest plots. Our findings thus give insight into the complexity of biotic interactions in such species‐rich ecosystems.  相似文献

Abstract. The effect of fire intensity - both temperature and duration - on the resprouting pattern of the evergreen Mediterranean shrub Erica multiflora in relation to plant size, was experimentally investigated by subjecting plants to the flame of a propane torch, and observing mortality and resprouting after 5 and 20 months. Pre-treatment plant size was not important in determining post-fire plant survival, but it did influence the resprouting vigour, increasingly so with time. High temperatures induced higher mortality rates within populations, but duration of fire did not effect mortality. Biomass of resprouts was lower following more intense fire treatments, but this effect progressively disappeared over time, except in plants subjected to the most intense fire treatment. This is probably because of the increasing importance of the below-ground organs for the regeneration of the above-ground biomass. Some of the plants which were clipped but not exposed to fire also died 20 months after treatment. The effect of clipping onmortality andresprout-ing response, estimated as biomass of resprouts, was not significantly different from the effect induced by either low or medium temperature treatments, but was significantly different when compared with the effect of high-temperature treatments. Field observations show that the establishment of seedlings of E. multiflora is rare both after fire and between fires. Thus, our data support the idea that both a single fire or clipping can diminish the population size of a resprouting species. We conclude that fire may have a stochastic effect on E. multiflora populations, due to the variation in fire intensity existing within a single burning stand.  相似文献

This study provides the first quantitative analysis of the littoral and supralittoral insect and mite assemblages of sub-Antarctic Marion Island. Seventeen mite species (126,203 individuals) from 11 families were found on the shore at Macaroni Bay. Three families dominated the assemblages in both abundance and diversity: the Hyadesiidae, Ameronothridae and Halacaridae. Six insect species from three orders were found on the shore. Species richness increased from one in the littoral, to four and two species in the Mastodia and Caloplaca zones, respectively. The littoral chironomid midge Telmatogeton amphibius was the most abundant insect species, constituting 80% of all insects counted. Arthropod assemblages corresponded closely to the cryptogam-dominated zonation patterns previously identified for the Marion Island shore. This clear association between arthropod and cryptogam zonation patterns provided a clear indication of habitat specificity in many of the species, and a quantitative analysis of habitat specificity on a species by species basis supported this idea. The specificity of most species to the shore, which forms part of the epilithic biotope, is most likely a consequence of the considerable age of this biotope compared to the younger, post-glacial vascular vegetation. Tourist species, i.e. species transient to an assemblage, inflated species richness in zones and the distribution ranges of species across zones. It is suggested that previous qualitative analyses of shoreline arthropod communities may have overestimated species ranges and richnesses because of the inclusion of tourist species. It is suggested that if a sound understanding of patterns in, and processes underlying Antarctic arthropod assemblages is to be achieved, quantitative analyses must be expanded in the region. Leaf mineral concentrations of co‐occurring Erica arborea, Juniperus communis and Myrtus communis were measured at bimonthly intervals throughout a year in a natural CO2 spring and in a nearby control site with similar soil chemistry in a Mediterranean environment. There were different responses to the elevated [CO2] (c. 700 μL L?1) of the spring site plants depending on the element and the species. In the CO2 spring site K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Al, Fe, and Ti leaf concentrations and the ratio C/N showed significant greater values in at least one or two of the three species. Leaf S concentration were greater in all three species. Leaf concentrations of N, Sr, Co, and B were lower in at least one or two species, and those of C and Ba were lower in all the three studied species near the CO2 spring. P, Na, Zn, Si, Cu, Ni, Cr, Pb, Mo, V and Cd leaf concentrations and the specific leaf area (SLA, measured in Myrtus communis) did not show any consistent or significant pattern in response to the elevated [CO2] of the spring site. There was a slight trend towards maximum concentrations of most of these elements during autumn–winter and minimum values during the spring season, especially in Myrtus communis. Multivariate principal component analyses based on the leaf elemental concentrations clearly differentiated the two sites and the three species. Lower concentrations at the spring site were not the result of a dilution effect by increased structural or nonstructural carbon. In contrast to most experimental studies of CO2 enrichment, mainly conducted for short periods, several of these elements had greater concentrations in the CO2 spring site. Nutrient acclimation and possible causes including decreased nutrient export, increased nutrient uptake capacity, photosynthetic down‐regulation, Mediterranean water stress, and higher H2S concentration in the spring site are discussed.  相似文献

An investigation was carried out on the mycorrhizal colonisation, growth and nutrition of two members of the Ericaceae in close proximity to an arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) association. This was undertaken by separating mycorrhizal (EM) and non-mycorrhizal (NEM) Erica cinerea and Vaccinium macrocarpon from AM (inoculated by Glomus mosseae) and non-mycorrhizal (NAM) Plantago lanceolata using a 30 µm nylon mesh in a sand culture/pot system. Ericoid mycorrhizal colonisation by Hymenoscyphus ericae on root systems of E. cinerea and V. macrocarpon was in the range 14–22% and 58–69%, respectively. The presence of AM P. lanceolata had no effect on the ericoid mycorrhizal colonisation of E. cinerea and V. macrocarpon. NEM E. cinerea showed reductions in shoot biomass and shoot nitrogen concentrations after exposure to AM P. lanceolata after incubations of 6 and 9 weeks but there were no differences in dry mass, length, and nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations of the root systems between the treatment combinations. Reductions were also found, after incubations of 6 and 9 weeks, in shoot dry mass, leaf area and shoot nitrogen concentrations of NEM V. macrocarpon in the presence of AM P. lanceolata but no changes occurred in the length and dry mass of the root systems. There were no differences in maximum photosynthesis in V. macrocarpon between treatment combinations but NEM V. macrocarpon in the presence of AM P. lanceolata had the lowest transpiration rates and stomatal conductance and the highest nitrogen- and phosphorus-use efficiencies compared with the other treatment combinations. These results are discussed in relation to the type of interaction found in these compatible and incompatible mycorrhizal associations.  相似文献
