The vascular bundles in the inflorescence axis of Andropogon gerardii occur in inner and outer systems. The inner system is made up of large, early developing strands that, at earliest stages of development, are precocious (= the appendage they are to serve has not yet been initiated). The outer system consists of later developing smaller strands that are open ended in a proximal direction (= strands differentiate basipetally in the cortex below the appendage they serve). Bundles of both the inner and outer systems are not connected to other procambium early in their development but exist as isolated strands. The veins of the inner system of the inflorescence axis occur as sympodia. The presence of inner and outer systems in the vascular tissue is common to most monocotyledons. However, amongst monocotyledons, only certain grasses have been shown to have strands of the inner system that are isolated early in development. Many dicotyledons have large strands which are precocious and some have smaller, later developing strands which are open ended in a proximal direction, hence they occur as isolated strands. These smaller strands in dicotyledons occur between large strands. Certain dicotyledons have an inner and an outer system of veins. Of these, some have veins of the inner system that differ from the inner system bundles of monocotyledons in that they also form part of the outer system of veins, or develop at a different time. One other dicotyledon with an inner and outer system, Bougainvillea, differs from monocotyledons only in that the bundles of the outer system do not seem to be isolated early in their development and anastomoses are seen between the inner and outer systems. Thus, it appears that monocotyledons differ from dicotyledons only in the presence of independent inner and outer systems of vascular bundles in the former. Thus, the hypothesis of Zimmermann and Tomlinson that there are basic differences between monocotyledon and dicotyledon vascular systems is not substantiated. It is even suspected that monocotyledon and dicotyledon vascular systems will be demonstrated to be modifications of a basic plan consisting of large, acropetally differentiating and smaller, basipetally differentiating strands.  相似文献

The set of these two theoretical papers offers an alternative to the hypothesis of a primordial RNA-world. The basic idea of these papers is to consider that the first prebiotic systems could have been networks of catalysed reactions encapsulated by a membrane. In order to test this hypothesis it was attempted to list the main obligatory features of living systems and see whether encapsulated biochemical networks could possibly display these features. The traits of living systems are the following: the ability they have to reproduce; the fact they possess an identity; the fact that biological events should be considered in the context of a history; the fact that living systems are able to evolve by selection of alterations of their structure and self-organization. The aim of these two papers is precisely to show that encapsulated biochemical networks can possess these properties and can be considered good candidates for the first prebiotic systems. In the present paper it is shown that if the proteinoids are not very specific catalysts and if some of the reactions of the network are autocatalytic whereas others are not, the resulting system does not reach a steady-state and tends to duplicate. In the same line, these biochemical networks possess an identity, viz. an information, defined from the probability of occurrence of these nodes. Moreover interaction of two ligands can increase, or decrease, this information. In the first case, the system is defined as emergent, in the second case it is considered integrated. Another property of living systems is that their behaviour is defined in the context of a time-arrow. For instance, they are able to sense whether the intensity of a signal is reached after an increase, or a decrease. This property can be mimicked by a simple physico-chemical system made up of the diffusion of a ligand followed by its chemical transformation catalysed by a proteinoid displaying inhibition by excess substrate. Under these conditions the system reacts differently depending on whether the same ligand concentration is reached after an increase or a decrease.  相似文献

African floodplains are an excellent example of coupled human–natural systems because they exhibit strong interactions among multiple social, ecological, and hydrological systems. The intra-annual and interannual variations in seasonal flooding have direct and indirect impacts on ecosystems and human lives and livelihoods. Coupled human and natural system (CHANS) is a broad conceptual framework that is used to study systems in which human and natural components interact. While there are other conceptual frameworks to study social-ecological systems, the CHANS framework offers a clear way of studying the interactions, called couplings, between human and natural systems. Core features of the framework are the following: human and natural systems are analytically separated; focus is on processes within and couplings between systems; and the goal is to build an integrative, quantitative model of the coupled system. This paper explains the conceptual framework of coupled systems, using the case study of the Logone floodplain in Cameroon. We compare the CHANS framework with other frameworks that have been used to study the same floodplain, and argue for its usefulness in the study of African floodplains.  相似文献

A significant consideration in modeling systems with stages is to obtain models for the individual stages that have probability density functions (pdfs) of residence times that are close to those of the real system. Consequently, the theory of residence time distributions is important for modeling. Here I show first that linear deterministic compartmental systems with constant coefficients and their corresponding stochastic analogs (stochastic compartmental systems with linear rate laws) have the same pdfs of residence times for the same initial distributions of inputs. Furthermore, these are independent of inflows. Then I show that does not hold for non-linear deterministic systems and their stochastic analogs (stochastic compartmental systems with non-linear rate laws). In fact, for given initial distributions of inputs, the pdfs of non-linear determistic systems without inflows and of their stochastic analogs, are functions of the initial amounts injected. For systems with inflows, the pdfs change as the inflows influence the occupancies of the compartments of the system; they are state-dependent pdfs.  相似文献

1. Cell-free systems prepared from Krebs II ascites cells incubated at 45 degrees C have a much lower endogenous activity than those from cells incubated at 37 degrees C. The endogenous activity is mainly due to completion of polypeptide chains initiated in the intact cell. The low activity of the 45 degrees C system is due to a lesion in initiation in cells incubated at 45 degrees C. 2. Cell-free systems from cells incubated at 45 degrees C can translate efficiently poly (U) at 8 mM Mg2+. However, they initiate poorly on globin mRNA, indicating that these systems reflect the situation in the intact cell. 3. The lesion in globin mRNA translation in 45 degrees C systems can be overcome by addition of reticulocyte initiation factors. At saturation concentrations of factors, the response of a 45 degrees C system is restored to almost normal. 4. 45 degrees C systems from 40-S initiation complexes with methionyl tRNAfmet almost as efficiently as normal, but their ability for form 80-S complexes with globin mRNA is impaired, unless they are supplied with exogenous initiation factors.  相似文献

Summary An anatomical investigation has been carried out on the third optic ganglion of the fly, Musca domestica. Two systems of giant units, the dendritic arborizations of which are arranged orthogonally relative to each other, dominate the neuropile of this ganglion. The elements of the two systems have been reconstructed using a graphical procedure based on histological sections. One system branches predominantly in the dorsoventral direction, the other one in the anterior-posterior direction. Both systems of the giant units have a twin system composed of elements smaller in diameter and strictly parallel to the main units. The two systems have been termed the Vertical and Horizontal Systems.The elements of the two systems of fibers project into the periesophageal region where they come into contact with other descending elements. Electron microscopic investigations show that the two systems are post-synaptic at the level of the ganglion from which they originate. The horizontal system has been shown to be post and pre-synaptic in nature during its course in the mid-brain and ultimately presynaptic at its endings in the periesophageal ring. The peculiar geometric arrangement of the two anatomical systems of fibers suggests a precise function in relation to the visual world and in particular to the detection of the direction of motion. The accuracy of the structural pattern displayed by the giant units in the lobular plate seems to suggest that this optic ganglion represents the ultimate orderly projection of the external world in the brain of the fly.A short review of the electrophysiological data concerning this ganglion has been tentatively correlated with some behavioral data related to the visual orientation and fixation in insects.  相似文献

The traditional assembly system consists of a series of balanced workstations operating at the same rate with fixed cycle times. Recent advances in technology allow more flexible assembly systems, in which workstations operate independently and cycle times vary from job to job. This article develops an analytical model for comparing the throughputs (jobs per hour) of assembly systems with fixed and variable cycle times. The throughputs are compared on a common basis by requiring that both systems allow sufficient processing time to ensure product quality and that they have the same total times in system per job. Results indicate that an assembly system with variable cycle times can operate at a significantly higher throughput than one with fixed cycle times, provided there is sufficient buffer storage space between workstations to accommodate queueing. This benefit must be weighed against possible increased capital investment and practical considerations associated with system control.  相似文献

The considerable floral diversity present in the cactus family has often been associated with the specificity of its pollinators. However, many cactus pollination systems are generalized as their flowers are pollinated by a wide spectrum of animals. For example, cactus species with white flowers, nocturnal anthesis and extended floral cycles would present generalized pollination systems in which both nocturnal and diurnal visitors could be effective pollinators. In this article, we tested this hypothesis by studying the pollination biology of Echinopsis schickendantzii, an Andean cactus with sphingophilous flowers. In addition, we evaluated whether the cactus’s pollination system is complementary or redundant regarding the relative contributions of nocturnal and diurnal pollinators. Specifically, we studied the floral cycle, the reproductive system and the pollination effectiveness of floral visitors. The flowers of E. schickendantzii are self-incompatible; they opened at crepuscule and have an extended floral cycle. Moths were frequent visitors at night, whereas bees were frequent visitors during the day; both were effective pollinators of the cactus. Our results indicated that the flowers of this species present phenotypic, functional and ecological generalization, and their fruit set is determined by the contributions of both pollinator functional groups, i.e., they have complementary pollination systems. These results support the hypothesis that cacti in the extra-tropical deserts of South America have generalized pollination systems.  相似文献

 Two different types of glandular system in the proboscidial epithelium of Riseriellus occultus have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. As expected, most of the epithelial cells are glandular in nature. With regard to differences in the ultrastructure of these gland cells and in the formation and morphology of their secretory granules, we have categorized and described four types of gland cell, indicated as G1, G2, G3, and G4. Each gland cell has a completely intraepithelial body characterized by a prominent nucleus, developed rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complexes, and numerous secretory granules at different stages of maturation. These four types of gland cell appear associated in pairs forming numerous glandular systems of two types (A, B). These glandular systems are restricted to the ventral surface of the proboscis and are scattered irregularly throughout its length. Each glandular system consists of two gland cells of different types. The gland cell necks in each glandular system extend together to the epithelial surface; they protrude onto this and form a papilla where they open in a common area. The epithelial supportive cells adjacent to the glandular systems have long, stout microvilli which have a core of tonofilaments. These tonofilaments gather into dense bundles which pass vertically through the supportive cells and attach to the extracellular matrix underlaying the cells by hemidesmosomes. Moreover, a single sensory process stands close to each papilla. The ultrastructural morphology of the type A glandular systems suggests that they have an adhesive function operating in a similar way to that of the duo-gland adhesive systems in other invertebrate groups, although they are not homologous with these. The spatial arrangement of the secreted products of the type B glandular systems suggests that these may contribute to increasing the grip of the proboscis on the prey. The secretory granules (=pseudocnids) of the type G3 gland cells are very likely an autapomorphy of the Anopla, providing a character by which the relationships within the Nemertea can be evaluated. This review focuses on the interaction of estrogen with the cholecystokinin (CCK) and endogenous opioid peptide systems in the medial preoptic nucleus, and how these interactions result in alterations of a stereotypic female reproductive behavior--lordosis. The medial preoptic nucleus is an integral part of a circuit controlling lordosis that extends from the limbic system through the hypothalamus. Estrogen alters the integration of sensory information in the circuit that results in the display of sexually receptive behavior. Estrogen determines the activity of CCK and endogenous opioid peptide systems through regulation of expression, release and interaction with specific receptors. Studies of each system individually have indicated that they are pivotal to the expression of lordosis. Recent studies demonstrate an estrogen-dependent interaction between endogenous opioid and CCK systems that control reproductive behavior.  相似文献

Toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems are widespread among bacterial chromosomes and mobile genetic elements. Although in plasmids TA systems have a clear role in their vertical inheritance by selectively killing plasmid-free daughter cells (postsegregational killing or addiction phenomenon), the physiological role of chromosomally encoded ones remains under debate. The assumption that chromosomally encoded TA systems are part of stress response networks and/or programmed cell death machinery has been called into question recently by the observation that none of the five canonical chromosomally encoded TA systems in the Escherichia coli chromosome seem to confer any selective advantage under stressful conditions (V. Tsilibaris, G. Maenhaut-Michel, N. Mine, and L. Van Melderen, J. Bacteriol. 189:6101-6108, 2007). Their prevalence in bacterial chromosomes indicates that they might have been acquired through horizontal gene transfer. Once integrated in chromosomes, they might in turn interfere with their homologues encoded by mobile genetic elements. In this work, we show that the chromosomally encoded Erwinia chrysanthemi ccd (control of cell death) (ccd(Ech)) system indeed protects the cell against postsegregational killing mediated by its F-plasmid ccd (ccd(F)) homologue. Moreover, competition experiments have shown that this system confers a fitness advantage under postsegregational conditions mediated by the ccd(F) system. We propose that ccd(Ech) acts as an antiaddiction module and, more generally, that the integration of TA systems in bacterial chromosomes could drive the evolution of plasmid-encoded ones and select toxins that are no longer recognized by the antiaddiction module.  相似文献

Although the intestinal epithelium is equipped with multiple defense systems that sense bacterial components, transmit alarms to the immune system, clear the bacteria, and renew the injured epithelial lining, mucosal bacterial pathogens are capable of efficiently colonizing the intestinal epithelium, because they have evolved systems that modulate the inflammatory and immune responses of the host and exploit the harmful environments as replicative niches. The authors have developed a kinetic method that allows one to obtain relative reactivity constants for lipophilic antioxidants in free radical systems. Two experimental model systems were developed: (a) a methanolic solution using AMVN as the free radical initiator and linoleic acid as the substrate, and (b) a multilamellar vesicle system composed of dilinoleoylphosphatidylcholine and AAPH as the substrate and the initiator, respectively. The use of these two systems allows researchers not only to determine the intrinsic reactivity of a potential antioxidant, but also to evaluate its potency in a membranous system where the contribution of the physical properties of the antioxidant to the inhibition of lipid peroxidation is important. These results show that all antioxidants tested acted in these systems as free radical scavengers, and they validate the synergism between intrinsic scavenging ability and membrane affinity and/or membrane-modifying physical properties in the inhibition of lipid peroxidation.  相似文献

In research on grammatical gender, assignment and agreement are the two central notions. Genders are defined as systems of agreement classes, and the assignment of nouns to genders is reflected in the agreement they consistently trigger on associated elements. Yet, gender assignment and gender agreement are often discussed quite separately. This paper investigates the possibility that gender agreement is not only an overt manifestation of gender assignment, but that properties of agreement systems can themselves constrain the assignment systems they express. The paper discusses typological and diachronic evidence for the fact that not every type of assignment system can be expressed in every type of agreement system.  相似文献

The small size of plant viral genomes, the ease with which they can be manipulated, and the simplicity of the infection process is making the viral vectors an attractive alternative to the transgenic systems for the expression of foreign proteins in plants. One use of these virus expression systems is for vaccine production. There are two basic types of viral system that have been developed for the production of immunogenic peptides and proteins in plants: epitope presentation and polypeptide expression systems. In this paper, we consider computing systems that have autonomous helper components which fulfill support functions and that possess reconfigurable hardware so that they can specialize to different types of service tasks. Several self-organized task partitioning methods are proposed that can be used by the helper components to decide how to reconfigure and which service tasks to execute. The proposed task partitioning methods are inspired by the so-called ant queue system that can be found in real ants for partitioning tasks between the individuals. The aim of this study is to investigate basic properties of the task partitioning methods, like stability and efficiency, in order to obtain basic insights into the design of task partitioning methods in self-organized service systems. More precisely, the investigations are threefold: (1) discrete event simulations are used to investigate systems, (2) for a simple version of the task partitioning system analytical stability results are obtained by means of delay differential equation systems and (3) by numerically solving initial value problems.  相似文献

Neuronal networks assemble the cellular components needed for sensory, motor and cognitive functions. Any rational intervention in the nervous system will thus require an understanding of network function. Obtaining this understanding is widely considered to be one of the major tasks facing neuroscience today. Network analyses have been performed for some years in relatively simple systems. In addition to the direct insights these systems have provided, they also illustrate some of the difficulties of understanding network function. Nevertheless, in more complex systems (including human), claims are made that the cellular bases of behaviour are, or will shortly be, understood. While the discussion is necessarily limited, this issue will examine these claims and highlight some traditional and novel aspects of network analyses and their difficulties. This introduction discusses the criteria that need to be satisfied for network understanding, and how they relate to traditional and novel approaches being applied to addressing network function.  相似文献

雌花两性花同株是植物个体上同时有雌花和两性花的性系统。与其他性系统相比, 雌花两性花同株一直较少受到关注。尽管只有约3%的被子植物是雌花两性花同株的物种, 但其分布广泛, 具有多种多样的花部特征和传粉模式。解释雌花两性花同株物种的适应意义已有多种假说, 包括促进异交、避免雌雄干扰、优化资源配置、昆虫的植食作用以及增大对传粉者的吸引力等, 但证据不多, 并且研究对象主要集中在菊科Asteraceae。进一步对不同类群、不同传粉模式的雌花两性花同株的物种进行繁殖生物学研究, 并结合系统发育的比较研究, 有助于深入理解这一性系统的起源与进化。  相似文献
