The D. flavopilosa group encompasses an ecologically restricted set of species strictly adapted to hosting flowers of Cestrum (Solanaceae). This group presents potential to be used as a model to the study of different questions regarding ecologically restricted species macro and microevolutionary responses, geographical vs. ecological speciation and intra and interspecific competition. This review aims to revisit and reanalyze the patterns and processes that are subjacent to the interesting ecological and evolutionary properties of these species. Biotic and abiotic niche properties of some species were reanalyzed in face of ecological niche modeling approaches in order to get some insights into their ecological evolution. A test of the potential of DNA-Barcoding provided evidences that this technology may be a way of overcoming difficulties related to cryptic species differentiation. The new focus replenishes the scenario with new questions, presenting a case where neither geographical nor ecological speciation may be as yet suggested.  相似文献

The immigrans species group in the Drosophilinae is one of the representative species groups of Drosophila in East Asia. Although this group constitutes a significant part of the drosophilid fauna in the Old World, only a few species have been analyzed in previous molecular phylogenetic studies. To study the phylogeny of the immigrans group, we analyzed the nucleotide sequences of two nuclear genes, alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh) and glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (Gpdh), for 36 drosophilid species, including 12 species of the immigrans group. In the resultant phylogenetic trees, 10 species of the immigrans group (D. immigrans, D. formosana, D. ruberrima, D. albomicans, D. nasuta, D. neonasuta, D. pallidifrons, D. hypocausta, D. neohypocausta, D. siamana) consistently formed a clade (the immigrans group proper), although the phylogeny within this clade did not exactly correspond to the classification of species subgroups. However, D. annulipes and D. quadrilineata, both of which belong to the quadrilineata subgroup of the immigrans group, were not included in the immigrans group proper. Furthermore, we obtained the unexpected result that D. annulipes was included in a clade comprising Scaptomyza and Hawaiian Drosophila, together with D. maculinotata of the funebris group, although the phylogenetic relationships within this clade remain uncertain and need to be substantiated with further studies. Thus, according to the present study, the immigrans group is polyphyletic.  相似文献

Drosophila suzukii is a pest of soft fruit such as cherry, strawberry or blueberry and recently colonized North America and Europe from Asia. In this study, we assessed the utility of Japanese Asobara species as agents for the biological control of this pest species by examining their host use in nature and their capacity to parasitize this pest species. From Japan, eight Asobara species including putative three undescribed species were found; Asobara japonica was recorded from all over Japan, Asobara tabida from high altitude areas in central and northern Japan, Asobara rossica and Asobara rufescens from central to northern Japan, three undescribed species from central to western or southern Japan and Asobara pleuralis from a subtropical island of Japan. Among them, an undescribed species Asobara sp. TK1 may be useful as an agent for the biological control because it was recorded only from D. suzukii. All of the remaining seven species were generalists mainly using drosophilid species associated with fermenting fruits, and four of them had no or very low abilities to parasitize D. suzukii, indicating that these seven species are not or less appropriate as agents for biological control.  相似文献

The Drosophila melanogaster species complex consists of four species: D. melanogaster, D. simulans, D. sechellia and D. mauritiana. To identify these closely related species, researchers often examine the male genitalia, especially species‐specific shapes of the posterior process, as the most reliable and easily observable character. However, compared to genetic aspects, the evolutionary significance of the posterior process and other genital parts remains largely unexplained. By comparing genital coupling among these species, we revealed that the posterior processes, which are hidden under the female abdominal tergite VII when genital coupling is established, mesh with different parts of the intersegmental membrane between the tergite VIII and the oviscapts and that this membrane region broadens in a species‐specific manner. Furthermore, in D. simulans and D. sechellia, this membrane region is likely to incur wounds from the sharply pointed tip of the posterior process. On the basis of the use and functions of these and other genital parts, we discuss possible evolutionary forces underlying the diversification of genitalia in this group.  相似文献

A new species of the Drosophila obscura species group is described here, namely Drosophila glabra sp. nov. It was recently found from the Maoershan National Nature Reserve, Guangxi, China. The characteristics of the new species are based not only on morphological characters but also on DNA sequences of the mitochondrial COII(cytochrome c oxidase subunit II) gene.  相似文献

The mesophragmatica group of Drosophila belongs to the virilis-repleta radiation of the Drosophila subgenus. This group comprises 13 Neotropical species that are endemic to the South-American continent and seem to be fundamentally Andean in their distribution. The mesophragmatica-group phylogeny has been inferred previously by other authors based on morphological, cytological, and isozyme analyses. However, the relationships within the group have not yet been completely resolved, although its monophyletic origin has already been confirmed by molecular data. This work attempts to enhance the molecular approach to the relationships among the species of the mesophragmatica group, using both nuclear and mitochondrial markers. Phylogenetic analyses were performed using fragments of the nuclear alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh; 631 bp), alpha-methyldopa (Amd; 1211 bp), dopa-decarboxylase (Ddc; 1105 bp), and hunchback (Hb; 687 bp) genes and the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit II (COII; 672 bp) gene, and included a total of 4306 bp. The sequences obtained for eight representatives of the mesophragmatica group were analyzed both individually and in combination by distance methods, maximum parsimony, and maximum likelihood. Our results support subdivision of the mesophragmatica group into three main lineages: the first is composed of D. viracochi; the second comprises a clade grouping the sibling species D. pavani and D. gaucha; and the third encompasses D. gasici, D. brncici, and D. mesophragmatica. The best supported scenario suggests that D. viracochi is an early offshoot in the mesophragmatica group, with this and other early branchings occuring in the Pliocene/Pleistocene Epochs, possibly associated with Andean glacial refuges. Also based on the phylogenies obtained, we present a genealogical view of the evolution of previously described characters within the group.  相似文献

In this study, the phylogenetic relationships of 164 species of the family Drosophilidae are discussed, using the Amyrel gene, a member of the α -amylase multigene family. This study focuses on numerous species groups in the subgenera Sophophora and Drosophila of the genus Drosophila but also includes other closely related genera. Nucleotide data were analysed by several methods: maximum parsimony, neighbour joining, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference. Heterogeneity of base composition (mainly low GC contents in the species groups willistoni and saltans ) has been addressed. In all analyses, the genus Drosophila appeared paraphyletic. The subgenus Sophophora clearly appeared to be a monophyletic group, showing well-resolved clades, with the Neotropical groups arising in a basal position. Here, it is proposed to raise the species subgroups ananassae and montium to the rank of species group, and to restrict the melanogaster species group to the melanogaster subgroup plus the 'Oriental' subgroups, among which the suzukii subgroup is polyphyletic. Some related genera such as Zaprionus , Liodrosophila , Scaptomyza and Hirtodrosophila are clustered with, or inside the subgenus Drosophila , which is therefore paraphyletic and should be reviewed.  相似文献

Foraging-stage third-instar larvae from most wild-type (normal) Drosophila melanogaster stocks are generally repelled by light. To identify factors that affect the larval photoresponse, we elucidated the effects of age, temperature, and time on the photoresponse of larvae from a wild-type Canton-S stock. In addition, we analyzed the larvae from the LI2 isofemale line, which are unresponsive to light in a photoassay. To determine whether LI2 larvae behave abnormally on other behavioral paradigms, in comparison to Canton-S controls, we tested larvae in taste and olfactory assays and observed them to determine whether they dispersed in a food source. Like Canton-S larvae, LI2 larvae and other isofemale lines whose progenitors were collected from the same natural population are responsive to taste and olfactory stimuli. Moreover, LI2 larvae disperse in the food source, as do Canton-S larvae tested in the dark. Larvae expressing parasbl mutations, which respond normally to light but not to chemical stimuli, do not disperse normally in the food source, suggesting that dispersal may be mediated by perception of chemical cues.  相似文献

The Drosophila montium group is the largest clade of the subgenus Sophophora consisting of 94 palaeotropical species, whose phylogenetic relationships remain unclear. Here, I used a recent tree inferred from three nuclear genes and one mitochondrial gene for almost half of the species to reconstruct the historical biogeography of the group and propose a comprehensive classification for the totality of its species. The group originated in South-East Asia nearly 20 million years ago (mya), and dispersed to Africa in the Late Miocene. A second northward expansion into East Asia took place in the Pliocene. Based on morphological (male abdominal pigmentation and genitalia) and chorological traits congruent with the molecular tree, I divide the montium group into seven subgroups: parvula, montium, punjabiensis, serrata, kikkawai, seguyi and orosa. The polyphyletic status of some of the previously defined complexes (auraria, jambulina, serrata, kikkawai and nikananu) is also resolved.  相似文献

Wing shape variation was analysed with geometric morphometric methods in 17 laboratory strains, representing 11 closely related species (including two subspecies) of the Drosophila virilis group: D. virilis, D. lummei, D. novamexicana, D. americana americana, D. americana texana, D. montana, D. lacicola, D. flavomontana, D. borealis, D. littoralis, D. ezoana and D. kanekoi. Overall shape estimated using Procrustes coordinates of 14 landmarks was highly variable among strains and very similar in females and males. The landmarks in the distal part of the wing showed higher variation across strains than those in the proximal part. Procrustes distances between species were not consistent with phylogenetic distances previously suggested for the virilis group. Moreover, Procrustes distances between strains within species and within two major phylads (virilis and montana) were comparable with those between species and between phylads, respectively. The most different from other members of the group was the endemic D. kanekoi species, currently viewed as separate subphylad within the montana phylad. Allometric effects were found to be partly responsible for shape differences between the strains. Three most significant shape transformations were considered using the relative warp analysis and the strains were ordinated in accordance with transformation values. The pattern of relative warp scores could be easily interpreted only for the third warp explaining about 13% of shape variation. It separated the largest species, D. montana, D. ezoana and D. kanekoi, from other ones and was mainly associated with shape changes in the proximal region of the wing. The results of the present work suggest that wing shape in the virilis species group is not related to the speciation process. The observed proximal‐distal contrasts and allometric effects are in agreement with data of other studies, in which wing shape variation was analysed within Drosophila species.  相似文献

Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were utilized in studying the cephalic abnormalities of the tu-h strain of Drosophila melanogaster. Abnormalities, appearing as protuberances (growths) of different shapes and sizes, were observed only on or in close proximity to receptor cites. Compound eyes of some flies, besides having such protuberances, either had modified corneal lenses or were absent altogether. Cuticles of the growths were thinner than that of the normal surrounding layer. The epidermal cells associated with setae on the growths or underlying modified corneal lenses remained undifferntiated. Both setae and growths lacked innervation. The receptor portions (retinular sensory cells and secondary pigment cells) of the abnormal compound eye, where the dioptric portions were replaced by protuberances or remained undifferentiated, were unaffected by the mutation. Nuclei of several cells, including oenocytes and fat bodies, close to or underlying epidermal cells of abnormalities, were large and contained compact nucleoli without nucleonemas. Viruslike particles were observed in several nuclei of growth cells. It was concluded from the present study that the alterations induced by the mutation can be only a localized phenomenon restricted to at least several cephalic epidermal cells and/or their derivatives.  相似文献

Results of intrapopulation studies of sexual selection and genetic variation and covariation underlying elements of the sex comb of Drosophila bipectinata are presented. The magnitude of the sex comb, a sexual ornament, varies significantly among Australasian populations, motivating research into the evolutionary mechanisms responsible for its incipient diversification. The comb is composed of stout black teeth on the front legs of males arranged in three distinct segments: C1, C2, and C3. Significant sexual selection in field populations in northeastern Queensland, Australia, was detected for increasing C2 and body size, and simultaneously for reducing comb positional fluctuating asymmetry. In contrast, sexual selection was not detected for other comb segments, nor for sternopleural bristle number or symmetry. Selection intensities for C2 and comb positional fluctuating asymmetry were similar in magnitude, and although they were opposite in sign, values across twelve sampling dates, or selection episodes, were uncorrelated. Heritability estimates for C2 were high and significant across years, whereas heritability estimates for comb positional asymmetry were small, and generally nonsignificant. The major sex comb segments (C1 and C2) were significantly and positively correlated genetically, indicating the potential for correlated evolution of these components of the comb under sexual selection. The original finding of a significant positive genetic correlation between the magnitude of this sex trait and its positional asymmetry indicates that the counteracting and independent selection pressures detected could contribute to the maintenance of genetic variation sustaining sexual selection. The study documents the simultaneous presence of sexual selection in nature and of heritable genetic variation underlying expression of the sex comb, fundamental conditions necessary for its adaptive diversification. Drosophila bipectinata may be a valuable model for studies of adaptive diversification and incipient speciation by sexual selection.  相似文献

The melanogaster species group of Drosophila (subgenus Sophophora) has long been a favored model for evolutionary studies because of its morphological and ecological diversity and wide geographic distribution. However, phylogenetic relationships among species and subgroups within this lineage are not well understood. We reconstructed the phylogeny of 17 species representing 7 "oriental" species subgroups, which are especially closely related to D. melanogaster. We used DNA sequences of four nuclear and two mitochondrial loci in an attempt to obtain the best possible estimate of species phylogeny and to assess the extent and sources of remaining uncertainties. Comparison of trees derived from single-gene data sets allowed us to identify several strongly supported clades, which were also consistently seen in combined analyses. The relationships among these clades are less certain. The combined data set contains data partitions that are incongruent with each other. Trees reconstructed from the combined data set and from internally homogenous data sets consisting of three or four genes each differ at several deep nodes. The total data set tree is fully resolved and strongly supported at most nodes. Statistical tests indicated that this tree is compatible with all individual and combined data sets. Therefore, we accepted this tree as the most likely model of historical relationships. We compared the new molecular phylogeny to earlier estimates based on morphology and chromosome structure and discuss its taxonomic and evolutionary implications.  相似文献

Despite the widespread use of N,N,-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (deet) in insect repellent products, nothing is known about the molecular basis for the repellency of deet, we initiated a molecular genetics program to elucidate the molecular mechanism of deet repellency in Drosophila melanogaster (Meigen). Deet repellency was apparently due to airborne vapors, as wild type flies were repelled by a deet-treated surface in the absence of physical contact and in the dark. A mutant was isolated using chemical mutagenesis and at choice assay. In a choice assay, mutant flies entered 82 +/- 1% of deet-containing tubes, whereas wild type flies entered only 6 +/- 2% of deet-containing tubes. The mutant was repelled by other repellents, benzaldehyde and citronellal. The mutation was recessive and located on the X chromosome.  相似文献

We conducted a series of nine laboratory experiments testing the response of "vinegar flies," Drosophila melanogaster Meigen (Diptera: Drosophilidae), released in bioassay chambers to experimental traps and lures. These experiments showed that an effective trap could be constructed from a clear 225-ml screw-cap jar fitted with a hollow 8-mm-diameter cylindrical cross bridge. Flies could enter the trap from either end of the cylindrical "gate" and in turn could enter the interior chamber of the trap through a cut out portion at mid-span of the cylinder. The experiments also showed that a natural-component lure could be made using a teabag containing freeze-dried banana powder, yeast, and carrageenan gum powder as a humectant. When dipped in water for 10-15 s and then placed in the bottom of a trap, the teabag provided effective attraction for at least 7 d. Captured flies were immobilized on a sticky card placed in the trap, allowing them to be easily seen. Unlike other traps that cannot be opened and have liquid lures, the cylindrical-gate trap can be reused repeatedly if the teabag and sticky card are replaced. A final two experiments showed that the prototype operational cylindrical-gate trap with a teabag lure captured 3.3 and 2.3 times more released flies, respectively, than the next best of three commercially available traps.  相似文献

Flies resistant to the insect growth regulator cyromazine were selected in the F1 generation from a cyromazine-susceptible strain of Drosophila melanogaster (Meigen) treated with ethyl methanesulfonate. Four resistant strains were isolated by screening with cyromazine at a concentration > LC100 of susceptibles. In each strain, resistance is conferred by a single gene mutation. Cyromazine resistance in two of the mutants (rst(1a)cyr1 and rst(1a)cyr2) localizes to map position 17 of the X chromosome. Evidence is presented that these mutations are alleles of the gene rst(1a)cyr. Cyromazine resistance in another of the mutants (Rst(1b)Cyr) is also X-linked, and localizes to map position 49 of the X chromosome. The location of the gene conferring cyromazine resistance in the other mutant (Rst(2b)Cyr) is map position 66 of chromosome II. This is possibly an allele of a previously characterized cyromazine resistance gene, Rst(2)Cyr. Dosage-mortality analyses demonstrate a low level of cyromazine resistance is conferred in all strains.  相似文献
