The population dynamics of the three intertidal oribatid species, Alismobates inexpectatus, Fortuynia atlantica and Carinozetes bermudensis, have been studied on the archipelago of Bermuda over the course of a year. All three species are univoltine, showing a clear seasonal demographic pattern, with reproduction from spring to late autumn and a complete standstill of egg production in winter. A seasonal shift in sex ratio could also be observed in all three species and is supposed to be based on sex-dependent mortality. The subtropical climate of Bermuda allows longer reproductive periods than shown in other intertidal or edaphic temperate species and temperature is supposed to be the main factor influencing the demography of these intertidal dwelling mites. Although all three Bermudian species exhibit the same basic seasonal demographic pattern, there are slight temporal shifts in population dynamics, presumably caused by local microclimatic differences among the populations. Larviparity, shown in other littoral oribatid mites, is clearly absent in the present species.  相似文献

Plastron respiration was investigated in the fortuyniid Alismobates inexpectatus, Fortuynia atlantica and the selenoribatid Carinozetes bermudensis. All these taxa inhabit intertidal zones of subtropical and tropical coasts and are exposed to tidal flooding. The utilization of plastron mechanisms enables these species to respire under water. Cerotegumental structures consisting of micropapillae and pillars bearing an outer sheet provide extensive areas where air is retained supplying the tracheal system with oxygen. A. inexpectatus and F. atlantica possess a dorsal and ventral plastron connected laterally by cuticular channels of the van der Hammen’s organ, whereas the specific configuration of these channels varies between the genera. The plastron of Carinozetes species spans the whole body except for all movable parts as legs and genital and anal valves. Plastron structures in juveniles of the families Fortuyniidae and Selenoribatidae were investigated for the first time in detail. Air-retaining cerotegument is also present in immatures of these taxa but is concentrated along lateral and ventral folds where series of pores lead into supposed tracheal organs. In juveniles of A. inexpectatus and F. atlantica, these organs are tubes with a length of approximately 3–15 μm, and in Carinozetes immatures, these organs are short saccules (0.5–1 μm).  相似文献

The small archipelago of Bermuda is a geologically young landmass in the Western Atlantic Ocean and recently turned out to be inhabited by a number of intertidal oribatid mites. One newly described species, Carinozetes bermudensis, showed an unusual vast range of habitats like sandy beaches, rocky substrate and mangroves. In the present study, 13 Bermudian populations of C. bermudensis were analysed to verify species integrity of specimens from different microhabitats. A morphometric analysis of 17 continuous variables as well as a molecular genetic investigation of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I revealed the existence of a new species Carinozetes mangrovi sp. nov., inhabiting exclusively intertidal algae growing on mangrove roots. Although both species are morphologically nearly identical, the configuration of the genus-specific ventral carinae represents a clear diagnostic character. The high genetic divergence of approximately 12 % of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene sequence between C. bermudensis and C. mangrovi sp. nov. suggests that these two species diverged before the emergence of the Bermuda islands. Accordingly, both of them are older than the geologically young archipelago of Bermuda.  相似文献

The sea anemone Actinia bermudensis [Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia 41 (1889) 102] has a widespread distribution over the Western Atlantic, where it has been reported from Bermuda and Bahamas to southern Brazil. Nonetheless, reproductive features of this species, which broods asexually produced offspring, suggest that it has low dispersal capabilities. This raises a question about the specific status of the Brazilian population of A. bermudensis. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the taxonomic status of the Brazilian population, by genetically comparing it with the type locality (Bermuda) population. For this, we used allozyme electrophoresis to analyze samples from both populations. Thirteen enzyme systems (16 loci) yielded interpretable results for all populations. A high differentiation was encountered for the Western Atlantic A. bermudensis population (FST=0.434), partially due to the presence of a diagnostic locus (LAP) between Bermuda and Brazilian populations. This result could be taken as an indication that the Brazilian population should be elevated to a specific status. We do expect some genetic differentiation, however, between natural populations separated over wide geographic distances. Finally, since Mantel and regression analyses did not rule out the isolation by distance model, we have conservatively decided to maintain the specific status of A. bermudensis from Brazil.  相似文献

The introduction and spread of invasive species is of great concern to natural resource managers in the United States. To effectively control the spread of these species, managers must be aware of the multitude of dispersal methods used by the organisms. We investigated the potential for survival through the gut of a migrating fish (blue catfish, Ictalurus furcatus) as a dispersal mechanism for two invasive bivalves: zebra mussel (Driessena polymorpha) and Asian clam (Corbicula fluminea). Blue catfish (N = 62) were sampled over several months from Sooner Lake, Oklahoma, transported to a laboratory and held in individual tanks for 48 h. All fecal material was collected and inspected for live mussels. Survival was significantly related to water temperature in the lake at the time of collection, with no mussels surviving above 21.1 C°, whereas 12 % of zebra mussels (N = 939) and 39 % of Asian clams (N = 408) consumed in cooler water survived gut passage. This research demonstrates the potential for blue catfish to serve as a dispersal vector for invasive bivalves at low water temperatures.  相似文献

Botryococcus braunii Kützing, a green colonial microalga, occurs worldwide in both freshwater and brackish water environments. Despite considerable attention to B. braunii as a potential source of renewable fuel, many ecophysiological properties of this alga remain unknown. Here, we examined the desiccation and temperature tolerances of B. braunii using two newly isolated strains BOD-NG17 and BOD-GJ2. Both strains survived through 6- and 8-month desiccation treatments but not through a 12-month treatment. Interestingly, the desiccation-treated cells of B. braunii gained tolerance to extreme temperature shifts, i.e., high temperature (40 °C) and freezing (?20 °C). Both strains survived for at least 4 and 10 days at 40 and ?20 °C, respectively, while the untreated cells barely survived at these temperatures. These traits would enable long-distance dispersal of B. braunii cells and may account for the worldwide distribution of this algal species. Extracellular substances such as polysaccharides and hydrocarbons seem to confer the desiccation tolerance.  相似文献

A key evolutionary development facilitating land colonization in terrestrial isopods (Isopoda: Oniscidea) is the intermittent liberation of waste nitrogen as volatile ammonia. Intermittent ammonia release exploits glutamine (Gln) as an intermediary nitrogen store. Here, we explore the relationship between temporal patterns of ammonia release and Gln accumulation in three littoral oniscideans from Southern California. Results are interpreted in terms of water availability, habitat, activity patterns, and ancestry. A two-way experimental design was used to test whether ammonia excretion and Gln accumulation follow a tidal or diel periodicity. Ammonia excretion was studied in the laboratory using chambers with or without available seawater and using an acid trap to collect volatile ammonia. Ligia occidentalis releases ammonia directly into seawater and accumulates Gln during low tide (48.9 ± 6.5 μmol g?1 at low tide, 24.1 ± 3.0 μmol g?1 at high tide), indicating that excretion is tidally constrained. Alloniscus perconvexus and Tylos punctatus can excrete ammonia directly into seawater or utilize volatilization. Both species burrow in sand by day and show a diel excretory pattern, accumulating Gln nocturnally (31.8 ± 2.7 μmol g?1 at dawn and 21.8 ± 2.3 μmol g?1 at dusk for A. perconvexus; 85.7 ± 15.1 μmol g?1 at dawn and 25.4 ± 2.9 μmol g?1 at dusk for T. punctatus) and liberating ammonia diurnally. Glutaminase shows higher activity in terrestrial (0.54–0.86 U g?1) compared to intertidal (0.25–0.31 U g?1) species, consistent with the need to generate high PNH3 for volatilization. The predominant isoform in Armadillidium vulgare is phosphate dependent and maleate independent; phosphate is a plausible regulator in vivo.  相似文献

Although insects expand their distribution by various ways, generally only the adult phase has been taken into consideration in research on dispersal. In Megacrania tsudai, it has been proposed that eggs are dispersed through seawater. To test this hypothesis, eggs were treated under normal condition (NC) on wet cotton swabs, and marine condition (MC), floating on salt water for 30, 60, 90, and 365 days. In addition, eggs in the NC and MC treatment groups were dissected every 10 days to verify the developmental stage. The hatching rates in the NC and MC treatment groups were not significantly different among the five treatment groups. However, the egg period, time from laying to hatching, in the MC treatment group was significantly longer than that in any other treatment groups. The egg period was lengthened when the floating period on seawater was longer. The time of the start of egg development was similar in the NC and MC treatment groups, but the developmental speed was slower in the MC treatment group. These results support that M. tsudai can expand its distribution by dispersing its eggs through seawater, probably thanks to specific characteristics of eggs that allow their survival when they float in the sea.  相似文献

Flowing water can disperse a high number of seeds and vegetative propagules over long distances and is therefore a very important dispersal vector in wetland habitats. Although the dispersal of seeds is relatively well studied, the dispersal of vegetative propagules has received less attention. However, in riparian and aquatic systems where many species have clonal growth forms, it can be very important. The relative importance of vegetative propagules in the dispersal of fen species was assessed first by determining their relative abundance in the field and second, by determining the buoyancy of plant fragments of ten fen species experimentally. On average, vegetative propagules made up 3.2–58.9% of the total propagule number (mainly Elodea nutallii). Buoyancy of the tested species ranged from 25 days to over 6 months. Surprisingly, the propagules of Stratiotes aloides and Hydrocharis morsus-ranae increased buoyancy when spring started (after ca. 100 days). The results demonstrate that vegetative propagules of riparian and aquatic fen species have a high capacity to disperse over long distances via water and are therefore likely to play an important role in the colonisation of new habitats. Especially because in nine out of the ten species tested, over 50% of the propagules were still viable after 6 months of floating.  相似文献

Seedlings of Pistacia vera L. and Pistacia atlantica Desf. were cultured on hormone-free DKW medium supplemented with NaCl. The plants were subjected to low NaCl concentrations ranging from 0 to 80 mM for 45 days or to high salt concentrations (0, 131, and 158.5 mM for P. vera and 0, 131, and 240 mM for P. atlantica) for 25 days. Toxicity symptoms were recorded for seedlings exposed to low NaCl treatments. Plant growth, survival rates, mineral content, as well as proline and soluble sugar contents were determined and evaluated at the end of the culture period. The results indicated that low NaCl treatments yielded no instances of plant death in both species. At high salt conditions, however, significant mortality rates were noted for both species, being 22.86% at 240 mM NaCl for P. atlantica and 25.8% at 158.5 mM NaCl for P. vera. With regards to salinity effects, levels of 60 and 80 mM NaCl induced significant decreases of stem elongation and leaf number in the P. vera species. Salinities between 40 and 80 mM NaCl, however, induced a decrease in the root number of both species. The fresh weights of P. vera and P. atlantica also decreased significantly after 45 days of culture at NaCl concentrations between 40 and 80 mM and after 25 days of culture at 158.5 and 240 mM NaCl, respectively. The sodium and chloride uptake in plant organs seemed to be controlled more efficiently in P. atlantica than in P. vera. In both species, the K+ content was noted to undergo a significant decrease when salinity increased. While the K+/Na+ ratio was maintained above 2 at low NaCl treatments, it was sharply decreased at high NaCl conditions, suggesting a failure of K–Na selectivity mechanism. The Ca2+/Na+ ratio decreased significantly at 60 and 80 mM NaCl in P. vera and at 60 mM NaCl for P. atlantica. In both Pistacia species, high NaCl treatments (131–240 mM NaCl) induced a significant increase in proline content.  相似文献

To investigate the release and degradation of arsenoribosides associated with the brown alga Ecklonia radiata, tissues were collected in various marine micro-habitats (water column, sand intertidal, and rock platform intertidal) to establish the importance of decomposition stage and the micro-habitat in which decomposition occurs on arsenoriboside degradation. Total arsenic concentrations in E. radiata tissues varied in a similar pattern across all three sampling locations (Lake Tabourie, Burrill Lake, and Ulladulla Harbour) with concentrations in live tissues (53–124 μg As g?1 (dry mass)) greater than concentrations in tissues decomposing in the water column (28–90 μg As g?1 (dry mass)), which were in turn higher than concentrations in tissues decomposing in intertidal environments (16–21 μg As g?1 (dry mass)). Arsenoribosides, specifically sulfonate (SO3-), phosphate (PO4-), and glycerol (Gly-) accounted for all of the arsenic extracted from live E. radiata tissues. Arsenoribosides also accounted for 100 % of the extractable arsenic species in E. radiata tissues decomposing in the water column. The proportions of arsenic species in decomposing E. radiata tissue from intertidal environments varied with sampling location and therefore micro-habitat. In rock platform-based intertidal zones (Burrill Lake and Ulladulla harbour), considerable concentrations of unextractable arsenic (10–60 %) were present plus known arsenoriboside degradation products such as dimethylarsinoylethanol (DMAE), dimethylarsenate (DMA), and arsenate (As(V)). In sand/beach-based intertidal zones, however, the vast majority of arsenic (≈95 %) was unextractable with only small concentrations of arsenoribosides and As(V) present. This study demonstrates that the release and further degradation of arsenoribosides from E. radiata tissues occurs in a two-step process with arsenoribosides released via leaching, whilst E. radiata remains suspended within the water column. Arsenoribosides are then degraded to various intermediate arsenic species once E. radiata tissues settle on intertidal environments; however, the degree of degradation varies relative to whether decomposition occurs on rock platform or sand-based environments. These results illustrate the key role of marine micro-habitats in the degradation of arsenoribosides contained within marine macro-algae.  相似文献

This study addresses the phylogenetic relationship between Pistacia species by amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). The plant materials of this study consisted of a total of 44 accessions belonging to P. vera, P. eurycarpa, P. khinjuk, all subspecies of P. atlantica (atlantica, mutica, kurdica and cabulica), three unknown genotypes and three accessions, proposed to be hybrid from P. eurycarpa × P. atlantica. The accessions were from Iran, Turkey, USA and Syria. Six AFLP primer combinations produced a total of 475 fragments, with average of 79.16 fragments per primer pair, of which, 336 bands were polymorphic. Unweighted pair group method based on arithmetic average (UPGMA) analysis was performed on jaccard’s similarity coefficient matrix and also average similarity of each species. According to the results, two main clusters were developed and P. vera, P. eurycarpa, P. atlantica (subsp. atlantica, kurdica, mutica, cabulica) and the hybrid genotypes located in the first main cluster. P. khinjuk accessions from Iran and USA localized in second main cluster. The hybrid accessions located between eurycarpa and atlantica species and their hybrid nature between these two species were confirmed. One of the unknown accessions clustered with the hybrid ones and the two other were grouped closely with P. Khinjuk. According to this study, the closest species to P. vera was Eurycarpa group, followed by P. atlantica. UPGMA analysis separated P. atlantica subsp. mutica and cabulica from P. atlantica and P. eurycarpa. Subspecies mutica and cabulica were two closest genotypes; hence, P. atlantica subsp. mutica could be classified as a distinct species as P. mutica and the cabulica as a subspecies of P. mutica. This study revealed that P. eurycarpa is synonym for P. atlantica subsp. kurdica and should be considered distinct from P. atlantica; however, P. atlantica showed a closer genetic similarity to P. eurycarpa than the other species.  相似文献

Reciprocal transplant experiments were used to study the effects of tidal inundation and light level on growth and survival of four species of mangroves in Australia: Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh., Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (L.) Lam., Ceriops tagal C.T. White, and Rhizophora stylosa Griff. Seedlings were planted in the high or low intertidal and in light gaps or under the shade of a closed canopy. Survival and growth of the seedlings were monitored for 30–36 months. Significant differences in survival were found among species, between intertidal zones and due to light level. Averaged across intertidal zones and light level, survival was greatest for Rhizophora and decreased in the order Ceriops, Avicennia, and Bruguiera. For all species survival was greater (P ⩽ 0.001) in the high than in the low intertidal treatment, regardless of light level. Within the high intertidal all species survived better in light gaps than under the canopy. Relative growth of Rhizophora stylosa, Avicennia marina, and Ceriops tagal were greater in the high versus low intertidal and in gaps versus under the canopy. For Bruguiera gymnorrhiza growth was not significantly different between gap and canopy or high and low intertidal. Although Avicennia marina, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, and Rhizophora stylosa survived and/or grew best in the high intertidal they reach maximum abundance in the low intertidal. Ceriops tagal, however, performed best in the region where it is most abundant, yet even there, it was out-performed by the former three species. These results indicate that the species zonation patterns often observed across the intertidal cannot be explained by physiological adaptation alone. Factors such as propagule dispersal, competition and predation on propagules may also be important.  相似文献

Classical biological control is a valuable tool against invasive pests, but concerns about non-target effects requires risk assessment studies. Potential non-target effects of Anaphes inexpectatus Huber and Prinsloo (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) were assessed for a classical biological control programme against the Eucalyptus snout beetle, Gonipterus platensis (Marelli) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). No-choice tests were conducted with 17 non-target species to assess host specificity, including 11 curculionids. In behavioural observations, A. inexpectatus showed no interest in any of the non-target species, but two weevil species were parasitised within five days of exposure, although at significantly lower rates than G. platensis. In choice tests, only one non-target, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), was parasitised, at a rate of 0.6%, while 50.0% of G. platensis eggs were parasitised. Based on the host specificity test results and the potential host fauna found in the target area, the likelihood of non-target effects resulting from the release of A. inexpectatus is considered to be negligible.  相似文献

Echinoderms are considered marine osmoconforming invertebrates. However, many are intertidal or live next to estuaries, tolerating salinity changes and showing extracellular gradients to dilute seawater. Three species of echinoids – Lytechinus variegatus, which can occur next to estuarine areas, the rocky intertidal Echinometra lucunter, and the mostly subtidal Arbacia lixula – were submitted to a protocol of stepwise (rate of 2–3 psu/h) dilution, down to 15 psu, or concentration, up to 45 psu, of control seawater (35 psu). Coelomic fluid samples were obtained every hour. The seawater dilution experiment lasted 8 h, while the seawater concentration experiment lasted 6 h. Significant gradients (40–90% above value in 15 psu seawater) for osmolality, sodium, magnesium, and potassium were shown by L. variegatus and E. lucunter. A. lixula showed the smallest gradients, displaying the strongest conforming behavior. The esophagus of the three species was challenged in vitro with 20 and 50% osmotic shocks (hypo- and hyperosmotic). A. lixula, the most “conforming” species, showed the highest capacity to avoid swelling of its tissues upon the ? 50% hyposmotic shock, and was also the species less affected by salinity changes concerning the observation of spines and ambulacral feet movement in the whole-animal experiments. Thus, the most conforming species (A. lixula) displayed the highest capacity to regulate tissue water/volume, and was also the most euryhaline among the three studied species. In addition, tissues from all three species swelled much more than they shrank under osmotic shocks of same magnitude. This distinct trend to gain water, despite the capacity to hold some gradients upon seawater dilution, helps to explain why echinoderms cannot be fully estuarine, or ever enter fresh water.  相似文献

Cryptonemia specimens collected in Bermuda over the past two decades were analysed using gene sequences encoding the large subunit of the nuclear ribosomal DNA and the large subunit of RuBisCO as genetic markers to elucidate their phylogenetic positions. They were additionally subjected to morphological assessment and compared with historical collections from the islands. Six species are presently found in the flora including C. bermudensis comb. nov., based on Halymenia bermudensis, and the following five new species: C. abyssalis, C. antricola, C. atrocostalis, C. lacunicola and C. perparva. Of the eight species known in the western Atlantic flora prior to this study, none is found in Bermuda. Specimens reported in the islands in the 1900s attributed to C. crenulata and C. luxurians are representative of the new species, C. antricola and C. atrocostalis, respectively.  相似文献

There is little field evidence of fruit-infesting insect species surviving passage through the digestive tract of frugivorous mammal species. In this study, we collected brushtail possum faecal pellets from the wild and demonstrated emergence of adult torymid wasps from Rosa seed without removing the seeds from the pellets. Nineteen percent of possum dung pellets were infested by adult wasps, and a large proportion (85 %) of wasps survived. Survival to emergence was high considering that gut passage time in possums averages 50 h. This period potentially allows greater dispersal distances of wasps than would occur naturally by their own means. This plant–insect-disperser triad was studied in New Zealand where all three species were introduced and did not co-evolve. An exaptation process might have occurred since introduction of these species 150–180 years ago.  相似文献

The Ria Formosa is a meso-tidal coastal lagoon experiencing enhanced nutrient concentrations. Assessment of sediment–seawater interaction is essential if nutrient dynamics and the risk of eutrophication are to be fully understood. Pore water concentrations of dissolved inorganic and organic phosphorus, ammonium, nitrate and nitrite were determined in cores from six sites. Changes in nutrients concentrations were measured in intertidal pools on sand and mud between tides. Dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) concentrations (~200 μmol l−1) and effluxes (123 ± 14 μmol m−2 h−1) were greater from sand than mud (37 ± 10 μmol m−2 h−1), possibly due to the binding of P with the <63 μm fraction. NH4+ effluxes were high outside the Anc?o Basin (821 ± 106 μmol m−2 h−1) and were associated with Enteromorpha sp. mats. The greatest NO3 efflux was from sediments near a salt marsh (170 ± 67 μmol m−2 h−1). These sediment fluxes of P were not sufficient to account for elevated P concentrations seen by other workers on the ebb tide from the Anc?o Basin. Intertidal pools were sinks for Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN) and DIP over the 6 h exposure period. Thus, tidepools may be an important route of nutrients into sediments that enhances the effects of sediments on seawater nutrient concentrations.  相似文献

Global climate change will likely result in the reduction of water levels in intermountain wetlands and ponds, and the vegetation communities associated with these wetlands are an important forage source for livestock. Lowered water levels will not only constrict wetland plant communities, it will potentially change aquatic and soil salt concentrations. Such an increase in salinity can reduce plant growth and potentially affect competitive interactions between plants. A greenhouse experiment examined the effects of salinity and competition on the growth of two wet meadow grass species, Poa pratensis (a glycophyte) and Puccinellia nuttalliana (a halophyte). The following hypotheses based on published data were tested: (1) Biomass of both species will decrease with increasing concentration of salt; (2) root:shoot (R:S) ratio of P. pratensis will decrease with increasing salt concentration while R:S ratio of P. pratensis and P. nuttalliana will increase with clipping; (3) competitive importance will decrease for P. pratensis and P. nuttalliana with increasing salt concentration because salt induces a stress response and competitive importance is reduced in stressed environments. A factorial design included 3 plant treatments (P. nuttalliana alone, P. pratentsis alone, P. nuttalliana + P. pratensis) × 4 salinity rates (control; 5, 10, 15 g/L NaCl) × 2 clipping intensities (plants clipped or not clipped) for a total of 24 combinations replicated 6 times over a period of 90 days. We found a reduction in dry biomass as salinity increased, and this effect was greatest for P. pratensis. (1.94 g (SE 0.13) at 0 g/L NaCl to 0.22 g (SE 0.11) at 15 g/L NaCl). The R:S ratio of P. pratensis was reduced by salinity, but not for P. nuttalliana. Competitive importance of both species was reduced by clipping and by salinity, but the effect was greater and more consistent for P. pratensis. We conclude that salt concentration reduces plant growth and the effect of competition.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal fluctuations of water availability can be an obstacle for recruitment of many species in the restinga and might restrict seed germination and seedling growth in specific regeneration safe-sites. Clusia hilariana is one of the most dominant species of Restinga de Jurubatiba. This species has a high proportion of seedling establishment occurring inside the tanks of soil bromeliads underneath vegetation patches. Given the thin seed coats, the fast germination time and seed dispersal of C. hilariana during the dry season, we hypothesized that their major regeneration niche (the tanks of soil bromeliads) is related to susceptibility of seed germination and also seedling growth to low water availability. To test this hypothesis, seeds were germinated under decreasing water potentials using PEG 6000 solutions and seedlings were grown under varying water regimes. The percentage of seed germination progressively decreased at lower water potentials. After 38 days in ?1.0 MPa no seeds germinated. However, approximately 90% of seeds germinated when transferred to Ψ = 0 MPa. The relative growth rates of seedlings of C. hilariana did not differ between water treatments. Thus, the major regeneration niche of C. hilariana is not a consequence of a high sensitivity of seeds and seedlings to water shortage. Nonetheless, C. hilariana showed an array of seed and seedling traits that may help to overcome establishment constraints of the harsh environment of restingas.  相似文献
