Adaptation of the Avian Egg to High Altitude   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Theoretical predictions and experiments on eggs of domesticatedbirds indicate that the diffusion coefficient of gases is inverselyproportional to barometric pressure. Therefore potentially lethallosses of CO2 and water vapor from eggs laid at high altitudemight result if the increased tendency of gases to diffuse atreduced barometric pressure were not counteracted in some manner.Limited data from two wild populations indicate that water lossfrom eggs is independent of altitude over a 3000 m elevationalgradient. Four different possibilities are discussed by whichcompensation for increased diffusion of water vapor might beachieved at high elevations 1) a reduction in eggshell conductance(GH2O) 2) an increase in the initial water content of the eggs3) an increase in shell thickness, and 4) alteration of watervapor pressure in the nest microenvironment or incubation temperatureby variation in parental behavior. Mean GH2O of eggs of twoprecocial and four altricial species breeding above 2800 m issignificantly reduced below values of related birds breedingat lower elevations, but no change in initial water contentor shell thickness has been observed in such eggs. Observationsof parental behavior in species breeding over wide elevationalgradients have not yet been made. Identification of the mechanismsby which eggshell structure is modified to achieve a reducedGH2O the environmental cues used by females to determine theelevation of the breeding location and the rapidity with whichshell structuie can be modified awaits further research.  相似文献

Summary This study determined how structural features of the eggshells of coots (Fulica americana) laid at 4150 m in the Peruvian Andes differed from those at sea level in Peru and California and how these features affected exchange of water vapor, O2, and CO2. While barometric pressure at 4150 m was reduced to 60% of that at sea level, the conductance to water vapor, corrected to 760 torr, of montane eggs was 107% of the corresponding lowland value. When the effect of low barometric pressure on the diffusion coefficient of gases was considered, the effective conductance of the montane eggs at altitude was 177% of that at sea level. As a result, daily water loss from the montane eggs was substantially greater than that from lowland ones. The oxygen consumption of montane embryos was lower than that of lowland embryos of all sizes, particularly at larger embryonic masses. Just before pipping, the oxygen consumption of montane embryos was about 60% of the corresponding value for lowland individuals. Air cell oxygen tensions in montane eggs varied between about 65 and 38 torr; these values were about 60–70 torr below those in lowland eggs at equivalent embryonic masses. Just before pipping, the air cell CO2 tension of montane eggs was about 20 torr below levels in sea level eggs. The eggshell conductance to gases of montane eggs appears to have been selected to promote oxygen delivery at the cost of increased losses of water vapor and CO2.  相似文献

Oxygen transport to avian embryo tissues occurs by three steps, two of which are driven by diffusion. This results in a seriesof stepwise decrements in PO2 between atmosphere and tissue. The PO2 decrements for embryos of the domestic fowl incubatedat different altitudes are used here to examine potential adaptationsto hypobanc hypoxia. With exposure to moderate hypoxia embryosof the domestic fowl appear to maintain adequate tissue oxygenation.Adaptive adjustments in the shell, shell membranes and chorioallantoiscomplex were not observed. However, hemoglobin O2 affinity wasincreased and preliminary evidence suggests a redistributionof blood flow to maintain adequate oxygenation in higher priorityareas of embryonic tissue. At severe hypoxia, embryos of thedomestic fowl show decreased O2 consumption, embryo mass andlengthened incubition period. Thus at severe hypoxin the embryoof the domestic fowl does not appear to provide a realisticmodel. Evidence from avian embryos of species native to highaltitude suggest that they are able to maintain adequate tissueoxygenation even at severe hypoxia. Preliminary evidence suggeststhat some of the blood vascular system and tissue level adaptationspresent in the chicken embryo are also present in species nativeto high altitude. One of these, an increase in embryonic hemoglobin-O2affinity which is physiologically mediated in the chicken embryois genetically-based in the embryo of the native high-altitudespecies.  相似文献

Gas moves through the pores of the egg shell by diffusion inthe gas phase. The gas flux is therefore determined by the productof the effective conductance of the shell and the partial pressuregradient of the gas between the ambient air and the inner sideof the shell. The partial pressure gradient of oxygen is decreasedby a reduction of the oxygen partial pressure in the ambientair. This can be achieved by reducing barometric pressure atnormal ambient oxygen concentration or by reducing ambient oxygenconcentration at standard barometric pressure. Both methodsare reported to decrease oxygen consumption of the embryo butto a different degree. At the same ambient oxygen pressure thereduction is less in eggs exposed to a reduced barometric pressure. In an attempt to explain this difference, chicken embryos aged16–19 days were exposed to various oxygen concentrationsand carbon dioxide production was measured. At subnormal oxygenconcentrations carbon dioxide output diminished as the oxygenconcentration was lowered and the duration of exposure was prolonged. At oxygen concentrations above normal a small but significantincrease in carbon dioxide production was found. Finally theresults are compared with those in the literature on the diverseeffects of a continuous reduction of barometric pressure andambient oxygen concentration. This difference is ascribed tothe fact that a reduction of barometric pressure not only decreasesoxygen partial pressure in the ambient air but also increaseseffective conductance of the egg shell, the latter being inverselyproportional to the barometric pressure.  相似文献

1. Eggs of Crocodilia and Chelonia, like those of birds, have a pair of egg membranes separating a thick layer of albumen from the calcareous shell. In contrast, eggs of oviparous Lepidosauria have only a single shell membrane, upon which relatively small amounts of calcium carbonate are deposited; and the volume of albumen in eggs is extraordinarily small at the time of oviposition. 2. With the possible exception of certain geckos and some chelonians, eggs of oviparous reptiles seem always to absorb water from the substrate during the course of normal incubation. In so far as the rate of water absorption exceeds the rate of water loss by transpiration from exposed surfaces, the eggs swell during incubation. The term ‘cleidoic’ cannot be used to describe eggs of this type. 3. Embryos of lizards and snakes influence the water potential of extra-embryonic fluids contained within their eggs, thereby maintaining or increasing the gradient in water potential that drives water absorption. 4. Embryos of Crocodilia and Chelonia obtain a substantial portion of the calcium used in ossification of skeletal elements from the inner surfaces of the eggshell. In contrast, embryonic lizards and snakes draw upon extensive reserves of calcium present in the yolk, and obtain little (if any) calcium from the eggshell. 5. All reptilian embryos seem to produce substantial quantities of urea as a detoxification product of protein catabolism. Contrary to expectation, uricotelism may not be common among reptilian embryos, even in those few instances where development takes place within a hard, calcareous egg. 6. In eggs of Crocodilia and Chelonia, respiratory gases seem to pass by diffusion through pores in the calcareous eggshell and through spaces between the fibres of the pair of egg membranes. No pores have been observed in the shell of lepidosaurian eggs, and so gases presumably diffuse between the fibres of the single (multilayered) shell membrane. 7. Metabolism of reptilian embryos is temperature-dependent, as is true for most ectothermic organisms. For each species, there appears to be a particular temperature at which embryonic development proceeds optimally, and departures from this optimum elicit increases in developmental anomalies and/or embryonic mortality. 8. Viviparity has evolved on numerous occasions among species of the Squamata, but seemingly never among Crocodilia or Chelonia. Since the evolution of viviparity entails a progressive reduction in the eggshell, only those organisms whose embryos do not depend upon the eggshell as a source of calcium may have the evolutionary potential to become viviparous. 9. Evolutionary transitions from oviparity to viviparity could have been driven by selection related to (i) thermal benefits to embryos consequent upon retention of eggs within the body of a parent capable of behavioural thermoregulation; (ii) protection of the eggs from nest predators and/or soil microbes; and (iii) more effective exploitation of a seasonal food resource by early emerging young.  相似文献

Brood reduction in birds is frequently induced by hatching asynchrony. Crested penguins (genus Eudyptes) are obligate brood reducers, but in contrast to most other birds, first‐laid eggs are considerably smaller in size than second‐laid eggs; furthermore, first‐laid eggs hatch after their siblings. The mechanisms underlying this reversal in size and hatching order remain unclear. In this study, we tested whether the second‐laid eggs of Snares Penguins Eudyptes robustus have a higher eggshell porosity allowing them to maintain a higher metabolic rate throughout incubation and to hatch before their first‐laid siblings. We investigated differences in egg size, shell thickness, pore density, pore diameter and water vapour conductance between first and second eggs within clutches and examined the influence of these shell characteristics on hatching asynchrony. First‐laid eggs of Snares Penguins were approximately 78% of the size of the larger second eggs. Second‐laid eggs had considerably thicker shells and more pores per cm2 than first eggs, whereas pore diameter did not differ between eggs. Water vapour conductance was greater in second‐ (16.8 mg/day/torr) than in first‐laid eggs (14.9 mg/day/torr). The difference in water vapour conductance between first‐ and second‐laid eggs within clutches was related to hatching patterns. In nests where second eggs hatched before first‐laid eggs, second eggs had a considerably greater water conductance than their sibling, whereas in nests where both eggs hatched on the same day, the difference in water conductance between eggs was very small, and in a few nests where small first eggs hatched before their larger sibling, they had a greater water conductance than their larger second‐laid nestmate. Surprisingly few studies have investigated differences in shell characteristics between eggs within clutches and associated effects on hatching asynchrony. This study has demonstrated that such differences exist between eggs within clutches and that they can influence hatching patterns.  相似文献

Embryos of the domestic fowl have been successfully reared in turkey eggshells. The development of the Chorioallantois and its fusion to the shell membranes has been studied ultrastructurally and compared with the calcium transporting ability of normal embryos. There is no evidence of any species-specific effects in this functional association. The use of surrogate eggshells provides an interesting opportunity to study the differentiation and physiological properties of the chorioallantois.  相似文献

The society finch, a little passerin, was purposed to be utilized in embryological studies. Under control of the breeding cycle in 20 pairs, 4 to 6 eggs were used to be laid daily for several repeating week in a year. Average incubation time was 17 days in contrast to 21 in the domestic fowl. The eggs weighed 1.1 g in average and expected smallness of the embryo was regarded as favorable for morphological studies including the scanning electron microscopy. We present the first report of the complete development of the society finch. A number of embryological characteristics are described with special reference to the peculiarity of the altricial finch as compared with the precocial domestic fowl.  相似文献

Most bird eggs have evolved a suite of remarkably consistentadaptations for appropriate exchanges of respiratory gases andwater vapor during incubation in nests above ground. Howeverunderground incubation is associated with selective forces differentfrom those operating at the surface. New information from mound-buildingbirds living reptiles and extinct dinosaurs shows comergentadaptations to nest atmospheres that are high in CO2 low inO2 and nearly saturated with water vapor. High humidity eliminatesthe danger of excessive dehydration so gas conductance of theeggshell may be higher than normal, as a compensation for theunusual nest gases. In contrast with embryos of birds that nextabove ground and initiate breathing inside the shell, thoseof megapode birds lack an aircell and can breathe only afterthe shell is broken. Extreme precocity of megapode chicks isrelated to long incubation time and large energy stores in theegg. Because the material around a buried nest restricts diffusionthe size of the nest must be limited to prevent intolerablegas tensions adjacent to the eggs. This effect may have forcedcertain large reptiles to separate their layings into severalclutches and some megapodes to actively ventilate their mounds.  相似文献

We used the red-necked keelback (Rhabdophis tigrinus lateralis) as a model animal to study embryonic growth and mobilization of energy and material in oviposited snake eggs. Females (N=12) laid eggs between late May and early June. Eggs were incubated at 30 (+/-0.3) degrees C. One egg from each clutch was dissected at five-day intervals starting at oviposition. Incubation length averaged 27.9 days. Three phases of embryonic growth or yolk depletion could be detected in this study. The first phase, between oviposition and Day 10, was one of minimal transfer of energy and material from yolk to embryo. The second phase, between Day 10 and Day 22-23, was characterized by increasingly rapid embryonic growth and yolk depletion. The third phase, between Day 22-23 and hatching, was characterized by a gradual reduction in embryonic growth and yolk depletion. Approximately 73.6% of dry mass, 50.0% of non-polar lipids and 57.8% of energy were transferred from egg to embryo during incubation. Embryos withdrew mineral from the eggshell mainly during the last quarter of incubation. Our data show that oviposition does not coincide with the onset of rapid embryonic growth in oviparous species of squamate reptiles that are positioned midway within the oviparity-viviparity continuum, and that the greater conversion efficiencies of energy and material from egg to hatchling in snakes can be mainly attributed to their lower energetic costs of embryonic development and greater residual yolk sizes.  相似文献

Avian eggs possess a shell membrane in the shape of an asymmetrical ellipsoid and with a limiting membrane that is a smooth layer of homogeneous, dense materials. We describe the role of the magnum-isthmus junction (MIJ) of the oviduct in the formation of the avian-type shell membrane in the domestic fowl Gallus domesticus. The narrow width of the lumen at the MIJ indirectly participates in the determination of the asymmetrical ellipsoid shape of eggs that are encased by the egg-white layer and subsequently by the peri-albumen layer (PL) and the shell membrane. The PL reacts with Alcian blue and exists between the egg white and the limiting membrane. It is added to the ovulating egg at the MIJ and covers the outermost surface of the egg-white layer. The function of the PL is to provide a smooth surface by covering the irregular surface of the egg-white layer. The materials of the PL consist of an Alcian blue-positive polysaccharide (or glycoprotein) of 240 kDa and five proteins of 135, 116, 72, 49, and 46 kDa. The isolated materials have an affinity to bind with the egg-white mass. An antiserum against quail PL materials stains the domestic fowl PL and secretory cells of the luminal epithelium at the MIJ, and cross-reacts with the molecules of 240, 135, and 116 kDa.  相似文献

The climate‐sensitive butterfly Euphydryas editha exhibited interpopulation variation in both phenology and egg placement, exposing individuals to diverse thermal environments. We measured ‘eggspace’ temperatures adjacent to natural egg clutches in populations distributed across a range of latitudes (36°8′–44°6′) and altitudes (213–3171 m). Eggs laid > 50 cm above the ground averaged 3.1°C cooler than ambient air at 1 m height, while eggs at < 1 cm height averaged 15.5°C hotter than ambient, ranging up to 47°C. Because of differences in egg height, eggs at 3171 m elevation and 20.6°C ambient air experienced mean eggspace temperatures 7°C hotter than those at 213 m elevation and ambient 33.3°C. Experimental eggs survived for one hour at 45°C but were killed by 48°C. Eggs laid low, by positively geotactic butterflies, risked thermal stress. However, at populations where eggs were laid lowest, higher oviposition would have incurred incidental predation from grazers. Interpopulation variation in phenology influenced thermal environment and buffered exposure to thermal stress. At sites with hotter July temperatures, the single annual flight/oviposition period was advanced such that eggs were laid on earlier dates, with cooler ambient temperatures. The insects possessed two mechanisms for advancing egg phenology; they could advance timing of larval diapause‐breaking and/or shorten the life cycle by becoming smaller adults. Mean weight of newly‐eclosed females varied among populations from 92 to 285 mg, suggesting that variable adult size did influence phenology. Possible options for in situ mitigation of thermal stress include further advancing phenology and raising egg height. We argue that these options exist, as evidenced by current variation in these traits and by failure of E. editha to conform to restrictive biogeographic constraints, such as the expectation that populations at equatorial and poleward range limits be confined to higher and lower elevations, respectively. This optimistic example shows how complex local adaptation can generate resilience to climate warming.  相似文献

Intermittent hypoxic exposure (IHE) has been shown to induce aspects of altitude acclimatization which affect ventilatory, cardiovascular and metabolic responses during exercise in normoxia and hypoxia. However, knowledge on altitude-dependent effects and possible interactions remains scarce. Therefore, we determined the effects of IHE on cardiorespiratory and metabolic responses at different simulated altitudes in the same healthy subjects. Eight healthy male volunteers participated in the study and were tested before and 1 to 2 days after IHE (7×1 hour at 4500 m). The participants cycled at 2 submaximal workloads (corresponding to 40% and 60% of peak oxygen uptake at low altitude) at simulated altitudes of 2000 m, 3000 m, and 4000 m in a randomized order. Gas analysis was performed and arterial oxygen saturation, blood lactate concentrations, and blood gases were determined during exercise. Additionally baroreflex sensitivity, hypoxic and hypercapnic ventilatory response were determined before and after IHE. Hypoxic ventilatory response was increased after IHE (p<0.05). There were no altitude-dependent changes by IHE in any of the determined parameters. However, blood lactate concentrations and carbon dioxide output were reduced; minute ventilation and arterial oxygen saturation were unchanged, and ventilatory equivalent for carbon dioxide was increased after IHE irrespective of altitude. Changes in hypoxic ventilatory response were associated with changes in blood lactate (r = −0.72, p<0.05). Changes in blood lactate correlated with changes in carbon dioxide output (r = 0.61, p<0.01) and minute ventilation (r = 0.54, p<0.01). Based on the present results it seems that the reductions in blood lactate and carbon dioxide output have counteracted the increased hypoxic ventilatory response. As a result minute ventilation and arterial oxygen saturation did not increase during submaximal exercise at simulated altitudes between 2000 m and 4000 m.  相似文献

Incorporation of radioiodine into eggs and follicles was studied by oral administration of I131 to hens. With the single dose administration of I131 the shell, including the shell membranes, reached a maximal concentration of 0.017 % of the given amount per g of shell in eggs laid within one day after administration. The white reached a maximal concentration of 0.01 % per g in eggs laid about one day after administration. The subsequent reduction in concentration both in the shell and white from later laid eggs showed a rapid course. In the yolk, radioiodine began to appear in eggs laid about one day after administration. A maximal concentration of 2.78 % of the given amount per yolk was reached in eggs laid about five days after administration. The subsequent reduction in concentration could be followed in the yolk from eggs laid up to and including the ninth day after administration; then the concentration was about 1/50 of the maximal concentration. With continuous administration of I131 once daily for 16 days, the concentration in the shell and white was in the same amount as corresponding maximal concentration in single dose administration as long as the daily supply continued. Following cessation of administration, the concentration decreased in the shell and white with a course simliar to that obtained in the single dose administration. In the yolk, the concentration increased in eggs laid up to and including the ninth day after commencement of the continuous dosing; thereafter, the equilibrium remained as long as the administration continued. About 13 % of the daily given dose of I131 was recovered per yolk. After discontinuation of administration, an obvious concentration reduction was first obtained in the yolks from eggs laid five days later. A calculation of the results for the yolks from the single dose administration to be valid for the daily continuous dosing showed good agreement with the results obtained in the present multiple dose experiments. The follicular uptake of I131 in single dose administration was rapid, with the greatest uptake by the follicle which was in the most rapid phase of growth at the time of administration. During autoradiography of the follicles and eggs following single dose administration of I131, most of the radioiodine was recovered in the growth zone which corresponded to the follicle’s development during the first day after administration.  相似文献

The study investigated the ecophysiological differences between populations of the Common frog( Rana temporaria L.) from different altitudes in northern England. Frog embryos in upland northern ponds experience very low temperatures during the period of embryonic development. These embryos were found to have a lower lethal limit for 50% normal development of2–8 °C, compared with3–8 °C for lowland embryos. These values are below most of the lower limiting temperature estimates previously obtained for R. temporaria . Embryos from upland ponds developed faster at low temperatures than embryos from lowland ponds. This may be an adaptation to the shorter growing season and lower temperatures at higher altitudes. Upland female frogs were found to be shorter and produced fewer eggs than lowland females. The differences found between lowland and upland frogs are discussed in terms of their potential adaptive significance.  相似文献

In decapod crustaceans, the conditions experienced during embryonic development trigger phenotypic plasticity of the larvae at hatching. The objective of this study was to test the effects of temperature during embryonic development of Palaemon serratus on the phenotypic plasticity of hatching larvae. We incubated egg-bearing females from eggs laying to hatching at four temperatures (10, 15, 18 and 20°C). Weight, carbon and nitrogen contents were measured on newly laid eggs and on freshly hatched larvae. The duration of embryonic development was negatively correlated with incubation temperature. At 20°C, all females abandoned their eggs during development. Incubation temperature had no effect on the weight and the percentage of N of the larvae at hatching, while it did affect their percentage of C and their C/N ratio. Embryos incubated at 10°C seemed to produce larvae with fewer lipid reserves than those incubated at 15 and 18°C. They probably overconsumed their lipid reserves to compensate for the metabolic losses due to the low temperature. These results provide information on the link between maternal investment per egg and larval development in P. serratus.  相似文献

The large land snail Placostylus ambagiosus (Pulmonata: Bulimulidae) was investigated during a long-term study in northernmost New Zealand. The snails fed at night on fallen leaves from a variety of broadleaf trees and bushes. During the day, most snails in shrubland rested under plants close to their food sources at densities of up to 53 snails per m2 and mean live biomasses of 47–72 g/m2. Individual snails stayed close to their food plants for up to 12 years, seldom moving away. Resting behaviour and site fidelity in forest was not investigated in detail, but some adult snails in forest returned to their original sites after being moved up to 60 m into a fenced area built to protect them from feral domestic animals. The ovoid eggs (mean 7.0 mm long×5.6 mm wide; ranges 5.5–7.7 mm long; 5.1–6.7 mm wide) were laid in clutches averaging 43 eggs (range 1–113 eggs) in shallow cavities covered with soil. More than one snail may contribute to a clutch. Adult shell height ranged from 43 mm to 97 mm and varied with habitat quality. Where snail abundance was high adults were small. Implications of these results for conservation management are discussed.  相似文献

A sample of 535 small mammals, caught over a range of altitudes from 1500 to 4000 m in the Bale Mountains, on various expeditions from December 1971 to August 1986, enables the altitudinal zonation of the species to be delimited. The most abundant species, Lophuromys flavopunctatus, ranged from near the lower tree line at 1550 m, right up through the forested zones and onto the Afro-alpine moorland at 3900 m. The endemic Praomys albipes also ranged through the forest from 1550 to 3200 m, but was replaced in open habitats between 2400 and 3900 m by Stenocephalemys griseicauda and between 3000 and 4000 m by S. albocaudata, which was relatively more abundant than its congener at higher altitudes. Other moorland species, including Crocidura fumosa, Otomys typus, Lophuromys melanonyx and Arvicanthis blicki were also commonest at 3800–4000 m, but, like the Stenocephalemys spp., penetrated to lower altitudes in open habitats. Mus mahomet was confined to lower altitudes (1510–3000 m) and open habitats, apparently replaced by Mus triton, not previously recorded from Ethiopia, in forested habitats at middle altitudes (1950–2400 m).  相似文献

The development of eggs resulting from compatible and incompatible crosses of Aedes polynesiensis strains was studied. No difference was seen between newly laid compatible and incompatible eggs. Very little development occurs in most of the incompatible eggs; the eggs that develop mature but often produce abnormal embryos. Embryos developed in as many as 10% of the incompatible eggs and these developed into both males and females, which indicates that the surviving embryos were not parthenogenetic. In eggs infected with Wolbachia, the pole cells are infected at the time of formation and provide infection for the germ cells which develop later. Embryos that survive the incompatibility reaction and hatch from the egg develop normally.  相似文献

Doses of up to 300 Gy of ionizing radiation had little effect on fowl sperm morphology, ATP content and motility when measured in vitro. Fertility of eggs from hens inseminated with spermatozoa receiving 50 Gy, in terms of post-oviducal development, was less than 4%. However, 35% appeared 'fertile' by macroscopic examination of the germinal disc of unincubated eggs. These contained few embryonic cells, although the vitelline membrane contained many trapped spermatozoa. After doses of 100 Gy or more, inseminated spermatozoa were not found in the vitelline membrane and no fertile or apparently fertile eggs were produced; nor did such spermatozoa enter the utero-vaginal sperm-host glands. Genetic transformation using fowl spermatozoa irradiated with doses in excess of 100 Gy appears to be an unlikely prospect.  相似文献
