X-cell tumours have been described previously from teleost fish of the Northern Hemisphere, in which they occurred as lesions of the skin, pseudobranchs or gills. The present study describes X-cell tumours from the gills of an Antarctic teleost, Pagothenia borchgrevinki , thus extending the range to the Antarctic and also the Southern Hemisphere. Gills of affected fish were distinctly swollen and white in appearance, indicating that the gills were not functional as gas exchange organs. The affected gill tissue contained large numbers of X-cells, large spherical cells with a distinct extracellular coat and many densely staining membrane-bound granules. The possible origin of the cells is discussed.  相似文献

The effects of gill abrasion and experimental infection with Tenacibaculum maritimum were assessed in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar with underlying amoebic gill disease. The respiratory and acid-base parameters arterial oxygen tension (P(a)O2), arterial whole blood oxygen content (C(a)O2), arterial pH (pHa), haematocrit and haemoglobin concentrations were measured at intervals over a 48 h recovery period following surgical cannulation of the dorsal aorta. Mortality rates over the recovery period were variable, with gill abrasion and inoculation with T. maritimum causing the highest initial mortality rate and unabraded, uninoculated controls showing the lowest overall mortality rate. Fish with abraded gills tended to show reduced P(a)O2 and lower C(a)O2 compared with unabraded fish. Infection with T. maritimum had no effect on P(a)O2 or C(a)O2. All fish showed an initial alkalosis at 24 h post-surgery/inoculation which was more pronounced in fish inoculated with T. maritimum. There were no significant effects of gill abrasion or infection upon the ratio of oxygen specifically bound to haemoglobin or mean cellular haemoglobin concentration. Histologically, 48 h following surgery, abraded gills showed multifocal hyperplastic lesions with pronounced branchial congestion and telangiectasis, and those inoculated with T. maritimum exhibited focal areas of branchial necrosis and erosion associated with filamentous bacterial mats. All fish examined showed signs of amoebic gill disease with multifocal hyperplastic and spongious lesions with parasome-containing amoeba associated with the gill epithelium. The results suggest that respiratory compromise occurred as a consequence of gill abrasion rather than infection with T. maritimum.  相似文献

The early marine migratory behaviour of two populations of hatchery-reared Atlantic salmon Salmo salar was compared in a common-garden experiment. Post-smolts from a river in a long fjord (Laerdal River, 144 km from the open coastline, n = 79) and a short fjord (Flekke River, 20 km from the open coastline, n = 80) in western Norway were tagged with acoustic transmitters and released during the spring of 2005 and 2006 in the inner part of the Hardangerfjord system (Opo River mouth, 179 km from the open coastline). The migratory behaviour of the tagged fish was monitored by acoustic listening stations in the fjord system up to 167 km from the release site. The Laerdal fish began migrating before the Flekke fish and had higher progression rates in the middle part of the fjord system. A greater number of Laerdal fish was detected along the most direct migratory route and in the outermost part of the Hardangerfjord system, which is indicative of a higher survival. The results from this study demonstrate differences in early marine migratory behaviour between S. salar from two different stocks and suggest that the distance a S. salar population travels to reach the open coastline may influence its early marine migratory behaviour and performance. The selective pressures of marine predation and arrival time at feeding areas in the ocean may be stronger for stocks with a longer inshore migration, creating more efficient migrants over time.  相似文献

BAITED UNDERWATER VIDEO TECHNIQUES ARE INCREASINGLY BEING UTILISED FOR ASSESSING AND MONITORING DEMERSAL FISHES BECAUSE THEY ARE: 1) non extractive, 2) can be used to sample across multiple habitats and depths, 3) are cost effective, 4) sample a broader range of species than many other techniques, 5) and with greater statistical power. However, an examination of the literature demonstrates that a range of different bait types are being used. The use of different types of bait can create an additional source of variability in sampling programs. Coral reef fish assemblages at the Houtman Abrolhos Islands, Western Australia, were sampled using baited remote underwater stereo-video systems. One-hour stereo-video recordings were collected for four different bait treatments (pilchards, cat food, falafel mix and no bait (control)) from sites inside and outside a targeted fishery closure (TFC). In total, 5209 individuals from 132 fish species belonging to 41 families were recorded. There were significant differences in the fish assemblage structure and composition between baited and non-baited treatments (P<0.001), while no difference was observed with species richness. Samples baited with cat food and pilchards contained similar ingredients and were found to record similar components of the fish assemblage. There were no significant differences in the fish assemblages in areas open or closed to fishing, regardless of the bait used. Investigation of five targeted species indicated that the response to different types of bait was species-specific. For example, the relative abundance of Pagrus auratus was found to increase in areas protected from fishing, but only in samples baited with pilchards and cat food. The results indicate that the use of bait in conjunction with stereo-BRUVs is advantageous. On balance, the use of pilchards as a standardised bait for stereo-BRUVs deployments is justified for use along the mid-west coast of Western Australia.  相似文献

In 1995 mass mortality of pilchards Sardinops sagax occurred along >5000 km of Australian coast; similar events occurred in 1998/99. This mortality was closely associated with a herpesvirus. The pilchard is an important food source for larger animals and supports commercial fisheries. Both epidemics originated in South Australian waters and spread as waves with velocities of 10 to 40 km d(-1). Velocity was constant for a single wave, but varied between the epidemics and between the east- and west-bound waves in each epidemic. The pattern of mortality evolved from recurrent episodes to a single peak with distance from the origin. A 1-dimensional model of these epidemics has been developed. The host population is divided into susceptible, infected and latent, infected and infectious, and removed (recovered and dead) phases; the latent and infectious periods are of fixed duration. This model produces the mortality patterns observed locally and during the spread and evolution of the epidemic. It is consistent with evidence from pathology. The wave velocity is sensitive to diffusion coefficients, viral transmission rates and latent period. These parameters are constrained using the local and large-scale patterns of epidemic spread. The relative roles of these parameters in explaining differences between epidemics and between east- and west-bound waves within epidemics are discussed. The model predicts very high levels of infection, indicating that many surviving pilchards recovered following infection. Control appears impracticable once epidemics are initiated, but impact can be minimised by protecting juvenile stocks.  相似文献

In 1995, and again in 1998, high mortalities of pilchards Sardinops sagax neopilchardus were seen over their entire geographical range on the Australian coastline. A virus with typical herpesvirus morphology was identified as the causative agent, although the source of the virus remains unknown. At the time of the mortality events, the only available diagnostic test available for the detection of the virus was electron microscopy and hence, development of a rapid diagnostic test for detection and identification of the virus was required. Initial sequence data for Pilchard herpesvirus (PHV) was acquired by comparing the highly conserved region of the ORF 62 gene of other piscine herpesviruses (Ictalurid herpesvirus 1 [Channel catfish virus, CCV] and Salmonid herpesvirus 2 [Oncorhynchus masou virus, SaHV2, OMV]), and designing primers that successfully amplified a fragment of PHV. Here we describe the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology to detect PHV in infected tissues. Sequence analysis of amplified fragment resulting from this PCR is different from all known herpesviruses and can therefore distinguish PHV from all known viruses.  相似文献

Infection patterns of Mycobacterium marinum were studied over a period of 3 yr in wild rabbitfish Siganus nivulatus populations associated with commercial mariculture cages and inhabiting various sites along the Israeli Red Sea coastline. Mycobacteriosis was first recorded from the Red Sea in 1990 in farmed sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax and is absent from records of studies on parasites and diseases of wild rabbitfish carried out in the 1970s and 1980s. A sharp increase in the prevalence of the disease in cultured and wild fish in the region has occurred since. A total of 1142 rabbitfish were examined over a 3 yr period from inside mariculture net cages, from the cage surroundings and from several sites along the coast. Histological sections of spleens were examined for presence of granulomatous lesions. Overall prevalence levels of 50% were recorded in the rabbitfish sampled inside the net cages and 39% at the cages' close surroundings, 21% at a sandy beach site 1.2 km westwards, 35% at Eilat harbour 3 km to the south and 42% at a coral reef site about 10 km south of the cages. In addition, 147 fish belonging to 18 native Red Sea species were sampled from 2 sites, the net cage farm perimeter and the coral reef area, and examined for similar lesions. None of those from the coral reef were infected with Mycobacterium; however, 9 of 14 species collected from the cage surroundings were infected. An increase in prevalence of mycobacteriosis in the mariculture farm area was noted from 1995 to 1997. At the same time, a significant increase in prevalence was also apparent at the coral reef sampling site. Two M. marinum isolates from rabbitfish captured at Eilat harbour and the coral reef site were shown by 16S rDNA sequencing analysis to be identical to isolates from rabbitfish trapped inside the mariculture cages as well as isolates from locally cultured sea bass D. labrax. The implications of spreading of M. marinum infection in wild fish populations in the Gulf of Eilat are discussed.  相似文献

Increase in serum transaminases (GOT and GPT) activity attributable to nitrite toxicity was observed in juvenile Clarias lazera after chronic exposure to nitrite. The application of SGOT and SGPT assays for monitoring the effect of nitrite exposure over a 6-month period has shown that changes in activities are correlated with histological effects in Clarias liver. Kidneys from fish exposed to nitrite were not noticeably different histologically from that of control fish. Hypertrophy and hyperplasia were the most consistent lesions that occurred in the gills. Lifting of lamellar epithelium and necrosis of some epithelial cells were also prominent.  相似文献

Reef fish abundances were sampled at 11 shallow reef localities extending over 1000 km of coastline in northern New Zealand. Sampling was restricted to the 4–10-m depth stratum and included six coastal and five island localities. These were either coralline reef flats dominated by echinoids, or algal reefs with high densities of laminarian and fucoid algae. Reefs dominated by macroscopic algae supported large numbers of small fishes, mainly labrids, and few large benthic-feeding fishes. Echinoid-dominated reefs supported a different fish fauna with more large benthic-feeding species. Additional sampling of echinoiddominated reefs and algal stands in deeper water provided confirmation of these findings. A second sampling programme was carried out at a series of eight sites within a single locality covering 5 km of coastline. These spanned a moderate exposure gradient and ranged from algal dominated reefs to typical coralline reef flats with high densities of grazing invertebrates. The relationship between habitat structure and reef fish species composition and size frequency was similar to that of the large-scale sampling programme. Thirdly, observations on reef fish foraging and feeding patterns within a single reef site suggested that larger benthic-feeding reef fishes were less likely to feed within macroscopic algal stands. Experimental reductions of grazing invertebrates designed to produce brown algal stands on echinoid-dominated reef flats supported these observations. Larger individuals capable of removing echinoids and grazing gastropods did not frequent or feed in laminarian and fucoid algal stands. This pattern is discernible at several spatial scales. Our conclusion is that the type of shallow reef habitat, echinoid- as opposed to algal-dominated, will have an important rôle in determining the associated reef fish fauna.  相似文献

The accumulation and effects of 150 pg All-1 on minnows ( Phoxinus phoxinus L.) were studied in soft water at pH 7, 6 and 5. The fish were kept in a flow-through water system for up to 48 days. Addition of aluminium to the water resulted in poor appetite, passivity and a tendency for the fish to gather as far as possible from the aluminium inlet. The mortality was high at pH 5 and also after addition of aluminium at pH 6. Severe lesions were noted in the gills and olfactory organs after exposure to aluminium. The concentration of aluminium in the gills, liver and kidney was increased at low pH. A large proportion of the aluminium was located on the surface of the gill epithelium. The recovery capacity was pronounced when the aluminium exposure was terminated and the pH was increased from 5 to 7. No further mortality occurred and gill and olfactory organ structure returned to near normality in about 36 days.  相似文献

Information about dispersal scales of fish at various life history stages is critical for successful design of networks of marine protected areas, but is lacking for most species and regions. Otolith chemistry provides an opportunity to investigate dispersal patterns at a number of life history stages. Our aim was to assess patterns of larval and post-settlement (i.e. between settlement and recruitment) dispersal at two different spatial scales in a Mediterranean coastal fish (i.e. white sea bream, Diplodus sargus sargus) using otolith chemistry. At a large spatial scale (~200 km) we investigated natal origin of fish and at a smaller scale (~30 km) we assessed "site fidelity" (i.e. post-settlement dispersal until recruitment). Larvae dispersed from three spawning areas, and a single spawning area supplied post-settlers (proxy of larval supply) to sites spread from 100 to 200 km of coastline. Post-settlement dispersal occurred within the scale examined of ~30 km, although about a third of post-settlers were recruits in the same sites where they settled. Connectivity was recorded both from a MPA to unprotected areas and vice versa. The approach adopted in the present study provides some of the first quantitative evidence of dispersal at both larval and post-settlement stages of a key species in Mediterranean rocky reefs. Similar data taken from a number of species are needed to effectively design both single marine protected areas and networks of marine protected areas.  相似文献

Brown trout Salmo trutta populations of numerous Swiss rivers are declining. Sewage plant effluents are discussed as a possible cause. To investigate the influence of sewage plant effluents, brown trout as well as rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss were exposed to 10% diluted waste water over a period of 12 months. The effects were compared to those on trout kept in commercial tap water. The mortality rate was low and no pathogenic bacteria or viruses were recorded in exposed and tap-water animals. Parasitological examination revealed a mild infestation with Gryodactylus sp. in all groups. Macroscopically and histologically, only minor changes in gills, skin, and kidney of exposed animals were found when compared to fish kept in tap water. Degenerative and inflammatory reactions in the liver of exposed animals were the most prominent findings. Several brown trout caught in the River Langete showed marked proliferative, degenerative and inflammatory lesions of gills, liver, and kidney. The results do not suggest that waste-water effects would explain the decrease of fish populations. However, it is conceivable that the effluents in combination with other factors in the river enhance the development of changes.  相似文献

This study examines the utility of histopathology in the damselfish, Parma microlepis, as a biomarker for the effects of organochlorine pesticides and hexachlorobenzene (HCB). Linkages between organochlorine residue concentrations and contaminant-associated histological effects in fish were examined using field collections and a manipulative field experiment. The distribution of 11 frequently identified organochlorines were measured in wild fish at different spatial scales, spanning 270 km of coastline centred around the Sydney region. Histopathology was used to investigate possible effects on liver, gills and gonad tissues in these fish. Pearson correlations and correlative multivariate statistical techniques were used to explore possible associations between concentrations of organochlorines in fish collected from the field and histological alterations in tissues. Only 6% of correlations between organochlorine residues and histological alterations in fish from field collections, were significant. A weak correlation was found between the occurrence of lamellar fusion in gills and the concentration of aldrin and dieldrin in a manipulative field experiment. A hypothetical model is suggested to explain these results.  相似文献

A rhabdoviral disease occurred in farmed populations of market sized Japanese flounder (hirame) Paralichthys olivaceus in the Seto Inland Sea of Japan in 1996. The causative agent was identified as viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) based on morphological, immunological, and genetic analyses. Diseased fish that were artificially injected with a representative virus isolate showed the same pathological signs and high mortality as observed in the natural outbreak. This is the first report of an outbreak of VHSV infection in cultured fish in Japan. Clinical signs of diseased fish included dark body coloration, an expanded abdomen due to ascites, congested liver, splenomegaly, and a swollen kidney. Myocardial necrosis was most prominent and accompanied by inflammatory reactions. Necrotic lesions also occurred in the liver, spleen and hematopoietic tissue, and were accompanied by circulatory disturbances due to cardiac failure. Hemorrhagic lesions did not always appear in the lateral musculature. Transmission electron microscopy revealed many rhabdovirus particles and associated inclusion bodies containing nucleocapsids in the necrotized myocardium. The histopathological findings indicated that the necrotizing myocarditis could be considered a pathognomonic sign of VHSV infection in Japanese flounder.  相似文献

Two co-habitation studies with common carp were conducted to determine whether latent infections of koi herpesvirus (KHV) exist. Fish were exposed to KHV using 2 different temperature profiles, which induced low and high initial mortality. Subsequently, certain groups of fish were co-habited with naive fish while others were not. Koi herpesvirus was reactivated in fish from 3 of the 5 experimental tanks. Reactivation of the virus occurred regardless of the initial mortality associated with the virus or whether fish were co-habited with naive fish. The reactivation of the virus in our experiments occurred several months after the initial exposure to KHV and appeared to be temperature dependent.  相似文献

The sequence of host changes following the rupture of spore-laden xenomas of the microsporidian Loma salmonae during Microsporidial Gill Disease of Salmon was deduced from ultrastructural examination of the gills of naturally infected, moribund, chinook salmon from a commercial aquaculture site. The gills contained many stages of parasite development suggesting fish were chronically exposed to the parasite. Intact xenomas were generally found beneath the endothelium in arteries and arterioles and were encapsulated by a layer of collagen containing fibroblasts sometimes joined by desmosomes. Xenoma dissolution was characterized by neutrophil infiltration and loss of the xenoma plasma membrane and encapsulation. The inflammatory responses associated with ruptured xenomas ranged from acute lesions, denoted by a marked neutrophil infiltration and vascular thrombosis, to chronic lesions with a macrophage-rich infiltrate variously accompanied by neovascularization and vascular remodelling. Dendritic-like cells and plasma cells were characteristic throughout. Basement membrane damage of the primary filament epithelium and subsequent transepithelial expulsion of spores were associated with severe inflammation. An unusual previously undescribed multifocal change, in which epithelial cells invaded deeply beyond the normal boundaries of the basement membrane, affected areas of gill filament epithelium with basement membrane damage. Some neutrophils that contained L. salmonae spores, or spore polar tube, displayed morphological changes that included irregular cell shape, cytoplasmic darkening associated with an abundance of free ribosomes, lysis of neighbouring cells, and type II nuclear clefts. Fusion of apparently intact neutrophils occurred in other areas of the lesion, where close contacts between neighbouring cells were established and in some areas plasma membrane fusion occurred. Closely associated neutrophils with intact plasma membranes were observed to contain type II nuclear clefts, abundant granules and rough endoplasmic reticulum. Other neutrophils in the lesion displayed type I nuclear pockets, which is suspected to be an early stage of apoptosis.  相似文献
