The influence of oral diazepam administration (10 mg) on interhemispheric proactive and retroactive interferential inhibition during detection of test verbal signals was tachistoscopally studied in eight healthy right-handed subjects, in conditions of forward and backward contralateral masking according to the scheme of double blind investigations. Strengthening of effects of forward and backward contralateral masking was revealed which is considered as a testimony to participation of GABA-ergic inhibitory systems in the mechanisms of interhemispheric proactive and retroactive interferential inhibition.

We report on the erasure of the iconic memory of an array of 12 black letters flashed on a continuously- present white field. Erasure is accomplished by replacing the 16 ms letter array (frame 1) with a blank white frame for 16 ms (frame 2). The letter array returns in frame 3, with from one to six letters missing. Report of the missing letters is accurate without the blank white frame but is impoverished with it, as if interposing the blank erases the icon. Erasure occurs without any obvious luminance masking, 'mud splashes', pattern masking (backward, forward, or metacontrast), lateral masking, or masking by object substitution. Erasure is greatly decreased if the blank is presented one frame earlier or later. We speculate that erasure is due to a rapid reset of the icon produced by an informational mis-match.

The effect of focal visual attention on backward pattern masking was investigated using an orientation discrimination task. The results show that attention reduces primarily the effect of interruption masking, the later component of pattern masking, which occurs when the delay between the target and mask onset is about 50-150 ms. The strongest spatial cueing effect, i.e. the strongest reduction of the orientation discrimination threshold due to focal attention, was observed at intermediate (approximately 100 ms) target-to-mask stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA). There was a weak effect of cueing at shorter SOAs, and no or a very weak attentional effect was present at longer target-to-mask SOAs, where the pattern masking effect is absent. The dynamics of attentional modulation of backward pattern masking correlates closely with the dynamics of the attentional modulation of neuronal responses in the early visual cortex.

The study of 14 healthy subjects and 15 schizophrenic patients was conducted under visual backward masking conditions. Sensory thresholds were identified using the method of constant stimuli. A special modification of the backward masking technique with lateralized presentation of test and masking stimuli was used to study the lateral characteristics of visual attention. It was found that the thresholds of letter stimulus identification were significantly higher in patients with schizophrenia than in healthy subjects. Only in patients the asymmetry of visual perception was revealed with the higher recognition thresholds in the left visual hemifield. The overall data analysis suggests an association between increased recognition thresholds in schizophrenic patients and changes in the interruption mechanism functioning at the neocortex level.

This study investigates strategies in reasoning about mental states of others, a process that requires theory of mind. It is a first step in studying the cognitive basis of such reasoning, as strategies affect tradeoffs between cognitive resources. Participants were presented with a two-player game that required reasoning about the mental states of the opponent. Game theory literature discerns two candidate strategies that participants could use in this game: either forward reasoning or backward reasoning. Forward reasoning proceeds from the first decision point to the last, whereas backward reasoning proceeds in the opposite direction. Backward reasoning is the only optimal strategy, because the optimal outcome is known at each decision point. Nevertheless, we argue that participants prefer forward reasoning because it is similar to causal reasoning. Causal reasoning, in turn, is prevalent in human reasoning. Eye movements were measured to discern between forward and backward progressions of fixations. The observed fixation sequences corresponded best with forward reasoning. Early in games, the probability of observing a forward progression of fixations is higher than the probability of observing a backward progression. Later in games, the probabilities of forward and backward progressions are similar, which seems to imply that participants were either applying backward reasoning or jumping back to previous decision points while applying forward reasoning. Thus, the game-theoretical favorite strategy, backward reasoning, does seem to exist in human reasoning. However, participants preferred the more familiar, practiced, and prevalent strategy: forward reasoning.

Primates show activity patterns ranging from nocturnality to diurnality, with a few species showing activity both during day and night. Among anthropoids (monkeys, apes and humans), nocturnality is only present in the Central and South American owl monkey genus Aotus. Unlike other tropical Aotus species, the Azara''s owl monkeys (A. azarai) of the subtropics have switched their activity pattern from strict nocturnality to one that also includes regular diurnal activity. Harsher climate, food availability, and the lack of predators or diurnal competitors, have all been proposed as factors favoring evolutionary switches in primate activity patterns. However, the observational nature of most field studies has limited an understanding of the mechanisms responsible for this switch in activity patterns. The goal of our study was to evaluate the hypothesis that masking, namely the stimulatory and/or inhibitory/disinhibitory effects of environmental factors on synchronized circadian locomotor activity, is a key determinant of the unusual activity pattern of Azara''s owl monkeys. We use continuous long-term (6–18 months) 5-min-binned activity records obtained with actimeter collars fitted to wild owl monkeys (n = 10 individuals) to show that this different pattern results from strong masking of activity by the inhibiting and enhancing effects of ambient luminance and temperature. Conclusive evidence for the direct masking effect of light is provided by data showing that locomotor activity was almost completely inhibited when moonlight was shadowed during three lunar eclipses. Temperature also negatively masked locomotor activity, and this masking was manifested even under optimal light conditions. Our results highlight the importance of the masking of circadian rhythmicity as a determinant of nocturnality in wild owl monkeys and suggest that the stimulatory effects of dim light in nocturnal primates may have been selected as an adaptive response to moonlight. Furthermore, our data indicate that changes in sensitivity to specific environmental stimuli may have been an essential key for evolutionary switches between diurnal and nocturnal habits in primates.

A model of bilateral information processing in the auditory system was presented on the basis of the interaction of postsynaptic potentials intra- and internuclei in order to analyze the mechanism of binaural unmasking as well as monaural masking. The system was composed of a bilateral pair of auditory nuclei, which were organized in two parallel afferent systems as well as an efferent system. In the model, bilateral inputs were processed in three stages, i.e., the detection of interaural differences by the first afferent system, the equalization of relative neural timing by the efferent system, and the cancellation of specific spectral components by the second afferent system. Assuming the masking process to be forward and backward inhibitions on the auditory memory of signal by the ones of noise, the unmasking process could be explained as a result of disinhibition by the cancellation of bilateral masker inputs. This study was supported in part by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (No. 59870082) from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture

Among the more than 40 genera of anthropoid primates (monkeys, apes, and humans), only the South American owl monkeys, genus Aotus, are nocturnal. However, the southernmostly distributed species, Aotus azarai azarai, of the Gran Chaco may show considerable amounts of its 24-h activity during bright daylight. Due to seasonal changes in the duration of photophase and climatic parameters in their subtropical habitat, the timing and pattern of their daily activity are expected to show significant seasonal variation. By quantitative long-term activity recordings with Actiwatch AW4 accelerometer data logger devices of 10 wild owl monkeys inhabiting a gallery forest in Formosa, Argentina, the authors analyzed the seasonal variation in the temporal niche and activity pattern resulting from entrainment and masking of the circadian activity rhythm by seasonally and diurnally varying environmental factors. The owl monkeys always displayed a distinct bimodal activity pattern, with prominent activity bouts and peaks during dusk and dawn. Their activity rhythm showed distinct lunar and seasonal variations in the timing and daily pattern. During the summer, the monkeys showed predominantly crepuscular/nocturnal behavior, and a crepuscular/cathemeral activity pattern with similar diurnal and nocturnal activity levels during the cold winter months. The peak times of the evening and morning activity bouts were more closely related to the times of sunset and sunrise, respectively, than activity-onset and -offset. Obviously, they were better circadian markers for the phase position of the entrained activity rhythm than activity-onset and -offset, which were subject to more masking effects of environmental and/or internal factors. Total daily activity was lowest during the two coldest lunar months, and almost twice as high during the warmest months. Nighttime (21:00-06:00 h) and daytime (09:00-18:00 h) activity varied significantly across the year, but in an opposite manner. Highest nighttime activity occurred in summer and maximal daytime activity during the cold winter months. Dusk and dawn activity, which together accounted for 43% of the total daily activity, barely changed. The monkeys tended to terminate their nightly activity period earlier on warm and rainy days, whereas the daily amount of activity showed no significant correlation either with temperature or precipitation. These data are consistent with the dual-oscillator hypothesis of circadian regulation. They suggest the seasonal variations of the timing and pattern of daily activity in wild owl monkeys of the Argentinean Chaco result from a specific interplay of light entrainment of circadian rhythmicity and strong masking effects of various endogenous and environmental factors. Since the phase position of the monkeys' evening and morning activity peaks did not vary considerably over the year, the seasonal change from a crepuscular/nocturnal activity pattern in summer to a more crepuscular/cathemeral one in winter does not depend on a corresponding phase shift of the entrained circadian rhythm, but mainly on masking effects. Thermoregulatory and energetic demands and constraints seem to play a crucial role.

In backward masking, a target stimulus is rendered invisible by the presentation of a second stimulus, the mask. When the mask is effective, neural responses to the target are suppressed. Nevertheless, weak target responses sometimes may produce a behavioural response. It remains unclear whether the reduced target response is a purely feedforward response or that it includes recurrent activity. Using a feedforward neural network of biological plausible spiking neurons, we tested whether a transient spike burst is sufficient for face categorization. After training the network, the system achieved face/non-face categorization for sets of grayscale images. In a backward masking paradigm, the transient burst response was cut off thereby reducing the feedforward target response. Despite the suppressed feedforward responses stimulus classification remained robust. Thus according to our model data stimulus detection is possible with purely, suppressed feedforward responses.

Thresholds of the event-related potentials (ERPs) appearance were measured for one stationary and four moving auditory images presented in silence or under forward masking conditions. The difference between thresholds in silence and after noise masker was considered as masking level. Under the forward masking, the amplitude of the ERP to the first click in the test series decreased in guinea pig auditory cortex. Masking level decreased with the time lag between signal and masker and didn't depend on the fused auditory image localization that corresponded to the first click in different test signals. This fact can support the hypothesis that for the long test signals the initial part can be masked more than the final one. The ERPs amplitude to next clicks in test series depended on interaction of two factors: forward masking in the "masker-signal" system and interaction of separate ERPs in the series evoked by the test signal.

We make a thorough kinematic comparison of forward and backward swimming and maneuvering on a self-propelled robot platform that uses sub-carangifbrm swimming as the primary propulsor. An improved Central Pattern Generator (CPG) model allowing free adjustment of phase relationship and directional bias is employed to achieve flexible swimming and smooth transition. Considering the characteristics of forward swimming in carangiform fish and backward swimming in anguilliform fish, various backward swimming patterns for the sub-carangiform robotic fish are suitably created by reversing the direction of propagating propulsive waves. Through a combined use of the CPG control and closed-loop swimming direction control strategy, flexible and precise turning maneuvers in both forward and backward swimming are implemented and compared. By contrast with forward swimming, backward swimming requires a higher frequency or an increased lateral displacement to reach the same relative swimming speed. Noticeably, the phase difference shows a greater impact on forward swimming than on backward swimming. Our observations also indicate that the robotic fish achieves a larger turning rate in forward maneuvering than in backward maneuvering, yet these two maneuvers display comparable turning precision.

The accuracy and time of motor response in tests for visual recognition of simple (sets of horizontal and vertical lines, angles, and crosses) and complex (contour images of animate and inanimate objects) images forward-masked with stimuli of varying complexity were estimated in psychophysiological experiments. It was found that forward masking impaired recognition, the mask whose complexity was close to that of the given test image being the most efficient in each particular case. The masking effect was the strongest in the experiments where the sets of test and masking images coincided. Recognition of complex images proved to be more resistant to masking than recognition of simple images. The observed effects of forward masking are assumed to be determined by lateral inhibition and changes in the excitability cycle. The relative contributions of these mechanisms depend on the degree of similarity between the test and masking stimuli, as well as the hierarchical level of the visual cortex at which the test stimulus is “targeted.”

This study aimed to investigate effects of walking direction and speed on gait complexity, symmetry and variability as indicators of neural control mechanisms, and if a period of backward walking has acute effects on forward walking. Twenty-two young adults attended 2 visits. In each visit participants walked forwards at preferred walking speed (PWS) for 3-minutes (pre) followed by 5-minutes walking each at 80%, 100% and 120% of PWS of either forward or backward walking then a further 3-minutes walking forward at PWS (post). The order of walking speed in each visit was randomised and walking direction of each visit was randomised. An inertial measurement unit was placed over L5 vertebra to record tri-axial accelerations. From the trunk accelerations multiscale entropy, harmonic ratio and stride time variability were calculated to measure complexity, symmetry and variability for each walk. Complexity increased with increasing walking speed for all axes in forward and backward walking, and backward walking was less complex than forward walking. Stride time variability was also greater in backward than forward walking. Anterio-posterior and medio-lateral complexity increased following forward and backward walking but there was no difference between forward and backward walking post effects. No effects were found for harmonic ratio. These results suggest during backward walking trunk motion is rigidly controlled but central pattern generators responsible for temporal gait patterns are less refined for backward walking. However, in both directions complexity increased as speed increased suggesting additional constraint of trunk motion, normally characterised by reduced complexity, is not applied as speed increases.

The forward and backward swimming speeds and periods of a Vibrio alginolyticus strain that has a single polar flagellum were measured. The backward swimming speeds were 1.5 times greater than the forward ones on average and the average period of backward swimming was shorter than forward swimming. However, the swimming speed and period were not correlated. Similar results were obtained for a mutant that has a 1.6 times longer flagellum on average.

Total discrimination and divergence are derived from Baye's theorem and based on backward (a posteriori) probabilities. Total forward (a priori) discrimination and divergence can be computed from a test matrix from which total backward discrimination and divergence were calculated for optimization of the classifications of gynecologic cytology (Papanicolaou smears) and quality control in a laboratory. The total forward discrimination and divergence appears to behave in parallel with the total backward discrimination and divergence, and the discrepancies in the backward and forward discrimination/divergence were the smallest near the optimum classification scheme. Conversely, the discrepancies between backward and forward discrimination and divergence may be helpful in finding the best classification scheme for gynecologic cytology. The general symmetries of the total backward and forward discrimination/divergence may be related to the human cognitive process of preferring symmetry and to the historic process in which cytologic classification followed histologic classification and continuously checked for matches in two directions--i.e., from histology to cytology and vice versa--thus resulting in the preservation of symmetry.
