Although schooling behaviour is an important antipredator response of guppies ( Poecilia reticulata ) in Trinidad it is not known whether fish elect to school with particular individuals. Familiarity is a simple mechanism that could lead to non-random associations within schools. In this paper we test the idea that prior experience of particular individuals influences the choice of partners during schooling. We show (in a laboratory study) that female guppies prefer to associate with familiar individuals. However, we are unable to detect any schooling preference for unfamiliar females from the same population.  相似文献

Ten tetranucleotide microsatellite loci are characterized for guppy, Poecilia reticulata, an important model species in the study of adaptation and mating systems. Loci were isolated following a microsatellite enrichment procedure using probe‐labelled magnetic beads. Ultraviolet (UV) vision is well documented for many speciesof vertebrates. UV cues are known to be used in foraging, navigationand in mate choice. We conducted a series of behavioral experimentsto investigate the role of UV perception in mate choice inboth female and male guppies (Poecilia reticulata). In ourexperiments the visual appearance of potential mates was manipulatedusing either UV transmitting (UV+) or UV blocking (UV-) filters.Female guppies significantly preferred UV+ males. Male guppiestended to prefer UV- females, but their preferences were marginallynonsignificant. Further experiments investigating the roleof luminance, indicate that UV wavelengths are probably beingused for color discrimination rather than for detecting differencesin brightness. These experiments raise the possibility thatUV is used in mate assessment in different ways by male andfemale guppies. This may reflect the different strategies thatthe two sexes have in order to maximize reproductive success.To our knowledge, these are the first data showing that UVis used by any fish species in mate selection.  相似文献

Although Trinidadian populations of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, show considerable adaptive genetic differentiation, they have been assumed to show little or no reproductive isolation. We tested this assumption by crossing Caroni (Tacarigua River) and Oropuche (Oropuche R.) drainage populations from Trinidad's Northern Range, and by examining multiple aspects of reproductive compatibility in the F1, F2 and BC1 generations. In open-aquarium experiments, F1 males performed fewer numbers of mating behaviours relative to parental population controls. This is the first documentation of hybrid behavioural sterility within a species, and it suggests that such sterility may feasibly be involved in causing speciation. The crosses also uncovered hybrid breakdown for embryo viability, brood size and sperm counts. In contrast, no reductions in female fertility were detected, indicating that guppies obey Haldane's rule for sterility. Intrinsic isolation currently presents a much stronger obstacle to gene flow than behavioural isolation, and our results indicate that Trinidadian populations constitute a useful model for investigating incipient speciation.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to determine if differentwater velocities during ontogeny affect male physical condition,male signal intensity, and female mating preferences in theguppy (Poecilia reticulata). Guppies were raised in aquariain either high or low water velocities and fed in excess. Analysisof 72 males from four replicates indicated that high velocitymales had longer mean displays and spent more total time displayingthan low velocity males. These males also had significantlyfaster swimming speeds, wider caudal peduncles, and were moreattractive to females than low velocity males. There were nodifferences in display rates, body widths, standard lengths,or copulation attempts between high and low velocity males.These results indicate that water velocity conditions duringontogeny act as a proximal factor that influences the displaybehavior of guppies. Water velocity caused an indirect increasein the power of the male display to produce a female sexualresponse. The morpho-metric measurements suggest that the proximalmechanism behind the increased display intensity was the increasedmuscle development of males raised in high water velocities,which resulted in longer prolonged swimming speeds and moreintense displays. Twelve polymorphic microsatellite DNA loci were isolated from genomic guppy DNA. We assessed the level of genetic diversity for these loci using individuals from five native Trinidadian populations. All the loci were polymorphic although there were considerable differences among loci and populations in allele frequencies. Within populations, the number of alleles ranged from 1 to 22 and observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.000 to 0.990. Allele frequencies differed substantially between populations suggesting divergence.  相似文献

Thirty‐nine polymorphic microsatellite DNA markers were isolated from the guppy (Poecilia reticulata) genomic library. All of the loci showed moderate allelic variation ranging from two to seven alleles, with observed heterozygosities from 0.000 to 0.938. The microsatellite DNA markers isolated will be available for use in analysis of quantitative trait loci in breeding programmes and for population genetic studies on experimental fish.  相似文献

Deleterious mutations can accumulate in the germline with age, decreasing the genetic quality of sperm and imposing a cost on female fitness. If these mutations also affect sperm competition ability or sperm production, then females will benefit from polyandry as it incites sperm competition and, consequently, minimizes the mutational load in the offspring. We tested this hypothesis in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata), a species characterized by polyandry and intense sperm competition, by investigating whether age affects post‐copulatory male traits and sperm competition success. Females did not discriminate between old and young males in a mate choice experiment. While old males produced longer and slower sperm with larger reserves of strippable sperm, compared to young males, artificial insemination did not reveal any effect of age on sperm competition success. Altogether, these results do not support the hypothesis that polyandry evolved in response to costs associated with mating with old males in the guppy.  相似文献

We tested the effects of gestational stress, principally in the form of alarm cue extracted from the skin of conspecifics, on reproduction in female guppies (Poecilia reticulata) and the growth and behaviour of their offspring. Offspring from mothers exposed to alarm cue exhibited stunted growth in the first few days post-partum, which appeared to be mediated by shortening of the gestation period, the length of which directly correlated with growth rate within the first 6 days post-partum. Mature offspring did not differ in behaviour or stress responses compared with controls and so the effects of maternal predation stress did not appear to persist into adulthood. A different form of gestational stress, dietary restriction, did not significantly affect offspring growth, though brood size was reduced, suggesting that the effects of predation stress were not mediated by differences in resource demand or consumption.  相似文献

Virtually all studies of mate choice to date have assumed thatfemales choose mates independent of one another. Social cues,however, such as the mate choice of conspecifics, may also playan important role in such decisions. Previous work has shownthat female guppies of similar age copy each other's choiceof mates. Here we examine the effect of relative age on matechoice copying in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, and examinewhether younger individuals are more likely to copy the matechoice of older conspecifics than vice versa. Results indicatethat younger females copy the mate choice of older females,but older individuals do not appear to be influenced by themate choice of younger individuals.  相似文献

Fifty‐one microsatellite DNA markers of guppy (Poecilia reticulata) were developed. All of the markers detected moderate allelic variation. The number of alleles for each locus ranged from two to 10. Observed and expected heterozygosities varied from 0.10 to 0.63 and from 0.23 to 0.77, respectively. Three additional fish species of family Poeciliidae were used for the cross‐species amplification of these markers. It was found that only four to 16 markers detected polymorphism in these three fish species.  相似文献

The genetic architecture of fitness at the class IIB gene of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in the guppy Poecilia reticulata was analysed. Diversity at the MHC is thought to be maintained by some form of balancing selection; heterozygote advantage, frequency‐dependent selection or spatially and temporally fluctuating selection. Here these hypotheses are evaluated by using an algorithm that partitions the effect of specific MHC allele and genotypes on fitness measures. The effect of MHC genotype on surrogate measures of fitness was tested, including growth rate (at high and low bulk food diets), parasite load following a parasite challenge and survival. The number of copies of the Pore_a132 MHC allele was inversely related to infection by Gyrodactylus flukes and it appeared to be positively related to faster growth. Also, genotypes combining the Pore_a132 or other relatively common alleles paired with rare MHC alleles produced both advantageous and detrimental non‐additive effects. Thus, the genetic architecture underlying fitness at the MHC is complex in the P. reticulata.  相似文献

Well-studied model systems present ideal opportunities to understand the relative roles of contemporary selection versus historical processes in determining population differentiation and speciation. Although guppy populations in Trinidad have been a model for studies of evolutionary ecology and sexual selection for more than 50 years, this work has been conducted with little understanding of the phylogenetic history of this species. We used variation in nuclear (X-src) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences to examine the phylogeographic history of Poecilia reticulata Peters (the guppy) across its entire natural range, and to test whether patterns of morphological divergence are a consequence of parallel evolution. Phylogenetic, nested clade, population genetic, and demographic analyses were conducted to investigate patterns of genetic structure at several temporal scales and are discussed in relation to vicariant events, such as tectonic activity and glacial cycles, shaping northeast South American river drainages. The mtDNA phylogeny defined five major lineages, each associated with one or more river drainages, and analysis of molecular variance also detected geographic structuring among these river drainages in an evolutionarily conserved nuclear (X-src) locus. Nested clade and other demographic analyses suggest that the eastern Venezuela/ western Trinidad region is likely the center of origin of P. reticulata. Mantel tests show that the divergence of morphological characters, known to differentiate on a local scale in response to natural and sexual selection pressures, is not associated with mtDNA genetic distance; however, TreeScan analysis identified several significant associations of these characters with the haplotype tree. Parallel upstream/downstream patterns of morphological adaptation in response to selection pressures reported in P. reticulata within Trinidad rivers appears to persist across the natural range. Our results together with previous studies suggest that, although morphological variation in P. reticulata is primarily attributed to selection, phylogeographic history may also play a role.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of experience on the patternof mate choice in female guppies. Females from some naturalpopulations are known to discriminate among males on the basisof the relative area of orange in the color pattern. We exposedmaturing female guppies to groups of males that differed inphenotvpic distribution of orange coloration (high orange, loworange, and mixed) and tested their subsequent mating preferences.Females that had been exposed to high-orange or low-orange malegroups showed no discrimination in choice tests, but femalesexposed to mixed male groups favored high-orange males overlow-orange males. These results demonstrate that mating preferencesof females can be modified depending on prior experience. Femalesmay be able to adjust their pattern of mate choice dependingon the degree to which choice cues permit effective discriminationamong males. Although females of numerous species possess genetically-basedpreferences for certain male trails and male preferentiallywith males possessing these traits, recent theoretical and experimentalevidence indicates that they may also copy (imitate) the matechoices of other females under certain circumstances. Such mate-choicecopying is expected to be most prevalent when females have theopportunity to observe the mate choices of others and when matechoice is costly to females. One potential direct fitness costof mate choice is increased individual risk of mortality dueto predation. Here, we investigate for the first time the effectof increasing the apparent risk of predation on the tendencyof females to copy the experimentally staged mate choice ofanother female. Using adult female guppies (Poecilia reticulata)originating from a Trinidadian population that experiences arelatively high fish predation pressure, we first establishthat they possess a preference for the more brighdy coloredof two simultaneously presented males in the absence of bothmate-copying opportunity and an immediate threat of predation.However, most females reversed their initial mate preferencewhen given an opportunity to copy the mate preference of anotherfemale in the absence of predation threat The proportion offemales reversing their preference when given the opportunityto do so was not affected by increasing the apparent risk of(fish) predation. This result may be owing either to femaleguppies tending to copy the mate choice of others whenever theopportunity arises because the benefits of doing so accrue irrespectiveof the ambient risk of predation or to females choosing randomlybetween males with respect to their color pattern in the presenceof the predator irrespective of mate-copying opportunity. Thesetwo explanations for the apparent lack of an effect of predationrisk on mate-choice copying per se are both plausible but unfortunatelycould not be easily distinguished here. It may thus be possible,and interesting, that individual female guppies chose randomlybetween the available males in the presence of the predatorbut otherwise copied the choice of others when given the opportunityto do so.  相似文献

Populations of the guppy Poecilia reticulata from six locations in N. Trinidad were examined by starch gel electrophoresis to estimate their degree of genetic divergence. Variability at seven enzyme-coding loci demonstrated that populations differed markedly in allele frequencies with some allelic substitution between sites (for 23 loci, Nei's mean genetic identity, Ī ranged from 0.869–1.00; the coefficient of gene differentiation, G ST= 0.086; and the absolute differentiation between populations, m= 0.044). There was a good correspondence between degree of physical isolation and extent of genetic differentiation, as exemplified by the partitioning of gene diversity (Nei's gene diversity analysis = 66% between river basins; 32% within river basins; 2% within rivers), though there was considerable variability in the contribution of individual loci. Most populations were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and any significant deviations were due exclusively to heterozygote deficiencies. The patterns of population differentiation are discussed in relation to probable past geological and historical events, and present-day evolutionary forces. Notable among these are previous continental land connections, periodic immigration from N.E. South America, and post-colonization events including differential predation, sexual selection, apparent restricted vagility and small effective population sizes.  相似文献

Previous studies on Trinidadian guppies have shown an apparent association of genetic variability, expressed as mean heterozygosity (Ho) at allozyme loci, with river order: fish from lowland sites exhibit higher mean Ho than their upland counterparts. Detailed genetic and behavioural observations were undertaken in the present study by repeated sampling throughout two river courses to examine population heterogeneity. Results show that the predation regime mediated mating behaviour of upland and lowland populations in the wild is not as divergent as previous laboratory observations have suggested. Furthermore, genetic variation at the eight loci variable in Trinidadian populations (p100=0·13–O·88, H0=O·03–0·23) appears to bear little association with predation regime, but is related to sub-structuring of populations by habitat features and geographic isolation. We therefore conclude that the observed patterns of genetic variability arise primarily as a consequence of stochastic as opposed to deterministic factors.  相似文献

Triclosan (TCS), a chemical used for its antibacterial properties, is an ingredient in many detergents, soaps, deodorants, cosmetics, antimicrobial creams, toothpastes, and an additive in various plastics and textiles. The behavioral changes at different TCS concentrations (0.001–0.002–0.005–0.01–0.02–0.05–0.1–0.2–0.5 mg/L) were determined for the each test organisms in the study. The synthetic freshwater has temperature 20 ± 2°C, dissolved oxygen 7.0 ± 2 mg/L, pH 7.0–8.0. All experiments were replicated three times, in 14 h light, 10 h dark incubations, 10 fishes were put to each aquarium. In hourly and daily observations, times of dead and number for Poecilia reticulata, Danio rerio were recorded. Behavioral changes of Poecilia reticulata and Danio rerio were observed, such as fast-moving, uncontrolled swimming, trying to escape out of the water, vertical action to the water surface, loss of balance, respiratory difficulties, chills, and inversion.  相似文献

The effect of the false caudal eyespots (ocelli) of fish predators on guppy inspection behaviour was tested by use of predator ( Crenicichla ) models with and without a caudal ocellus.
