Recent molecular investigations of the small-subunit rRNA gene sequences have indicated that established taxonomic hierarchies can be clearly at odds with the degree of evolutionary divergence (as inferred from molecular divergence) between supposedly equivalent taxa at every rank (i.e., species through class), both within and across biological divisions. This is particularly true between the Rhodophyta and the Phaeophyta, whose higher-order taxa appear under- and overinflated, respectively. We present two plausible alternatives that algal taxonomists might adopt in order to invoke discussion on their relative merits.  相似文献

Under what circumstances will a vertebrate grandparent be selected to ‘spoil’ its grandchild in defiance of the wishes of the child's parent? To answer this question (the ‘doting grandparent problem’) a mathematical model of conflict and coalition in an animal society, some or all of whose members may possess imperfect information about potential costs and benefits of acts affecting themselves and their kin, is applied to interactions within extended families in diploid, outbreeding species. The model predicts that natural selection will not favour grandparent-grandchild alliances against the parent unless direct costs and benefits of behavioural acts over which conflict may occur are sufficiently broad in impact to affect at least three different kin categories simultaneously.  相似文献

The ADAM family

Notch signaling is integral to a large number of developmental and homeostasis events, and either gain or loss of Notch signaling results in a wide range of defects. Notch must be processed by several proteases, including a member of the ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloprotease) family to mediate downstream signaling. Until recently, interactions of Notch with specific ADAMs in different contexts were unclear. ADAM10 is now known to be specifically essential for development and homeostasis of mouse epidermis and cardiovascular structures, and ADAM17 may not be able to fully replace ADAM10 in these contexts. However, Notch from T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) patients can be cleaved by both ADAMs 10 and 17. Studies have revealed that ADAM10 is necessary for Notch processing when Notch is activated by a ligand, while ADAM17 is the major protease for processing Notch that is activated independently of ligand in both flies and mammals.  相似文献

The brain is a complex system composed of enormous numbers of differentiated neurons, and brain structure and function differs among vertebrates. To examine the molecular mechanisms underlying brain structure and function, it is important to identify the molecules involved in generating neural diversity and organization. The clustered protocadherin (Pcdh) family is the largest subgroup of the diverse cadherin superfamily. The clustered Pcdh proteins are predominantly expressed in the brain and their gene structures in vertebrates are diversified. In mammals, the clustered Pcdh family consists of three gene clusters: Pcdh -α, Pcdh -β, and Pcdh -γ. During brain development, this family is upregulated by neuronal differentiation, and Pcdh-α is then dramatically downregulated by myelination. Clustered Pcdh expression continues in the olfactory bulb, hippocampus, and cerebellum until adulthood. Structural analysis of the first cadherin domain of the Pcdh-α protein revealed it lacks the features that classical cadherins require for homophilic adhesiveness, but it contains Pcdh-specific loop structures. In Pcdh-α, an RGD motif on a specific loop structure binds β1-integrin. For gene expression, the gene clusters are regulated by multiple promoters and alternative cis splicing. At the single-cell level, several dozen Pcdh -α and -γ mRNA are regulated monoallelically, resulting in the combinatorial expression of distinct variable exons. The Pcdh-α and Pcdh-γ proteins also form oligomers, further increasing the molecular diversity at the cell surface. Thus, the unique features of the clustered Pcdh family may provide the molecular basis for generating individual cellular diversity and the complex neural circuitry of the brain.  相似文献

This paper models the proximate determinants of children born to over 13,000 Ethiopian women and of the women's stated preferences for additional births using the data from the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey 2000. Empirical models for the number of children born to women were estimated using Poisson and ordinal regressions. The results show the importance of variables such as maternal education for smaller family size, and that variables reflecting desired family size are strong predictors of the numbers of children born to women. Secondly, binary logistic models for dichotomous variables for women not wanting more children and if getting pregnant would be a 'big problem' showed non-linear effects of the surviving and 'ideal' number of children. Moreover, the results indicated a desire on the part of women to limit family size, especially as the number of surviving children increased. Probit models were estimated to address potential endogeneity of certain variables. Overall, the results indicated that counselling couples about small family size and increasing the utilization of health care services can lower fertility in Ethiopia.  相似文献

Collagens are the most abundant proteins in mammals. The collagen family comprises 28 members that contain at least one triple-helical domain. Collagens are deposited in the extracellular matrix where most of them form supramolecular assemblies. Four collagens are type II membrane proteins that also exist in a soluble form released from the cell surface by shedding. Collagens play structural roles and contribute to mechanical properties, organization, and shape of tissues. They interact with cells via several receptor families and regulate their proliferation, migration, and differentiation.
