Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) and Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky have been reported as the two most serious pests of stored maize in sub-Saharan Africa and smallholder farmers are in urgent need of guidelines for their proper management. In this article we investigate the injury rates attributable to these two species in terms of percentage weight loss and percentage grain damage, and we derive functional response models for the two species on maize. The models successfully described the progression of grain injury in an extensive data set compiled from previously published studies, comprising 46 time series of data relating maize injury and insect pest density. The grain injury models can be used in conjunction with predictive models of pest population dynamics to guide the development of integrated management strategies for postharvest maize pests in West Africa and comparable regions elsewhere.  相似文献

A fungal entomopathogen, Beauveria bassiana, was used to treat maize ears placed in traditional grain stores against Prostephanus truncatus in a field experiment conducted from September 1997 to March 1998 in the Benin Republic, West Africa. Treatments included oil-based spray with and without conidia, maize stored with and without the husk, and stores with and without artificial infestation. Additional treated ears kept in insect-proof cages under field conditions were sampled weekly and exposed to insects to estimate the virulence and persistence of the pathogen during the storage season. P. truncatus densities were significantly lower in treatments that included conidia, although densities were high in all artificially infested treatments and grain losses were severe. The effect of the pathogen was modeled with an exponential decay function and incorporated in a published P. truncatus simulation model. The effects of hypothetical pathogens with different virulence and persistence characteristics were evaluated in terms of insect density and percentage grain loss.  相似文献

Repeated sampling of rural maize stores in Benin was conducted to evaluate published parameters of a sequential sampling plan for a negative binomial distribution to determine pest status for Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) and Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky. A computer program was used to rerandomize the data and evaluate the effects, in terms of average sample number and error rates, of different sampling plan parameter values. With respect to P. truncatus, lower and upper thresholds of 0.2 and 1.0 insects per ear and parameter values of k = 0.2 and alpha = beta = 0.1 were found to be adequate. With respect to S. zeamais, lower and upper thresholds of 10 and 20 insects per ear and parameter values of k = 1.0 and i alpha = beta = 0.1 were found to be adequate. Simplified sampling rules were proposed in which 11 ears should be sampled and if no P. truncatus are found, the population is low; otherwise the Wald plan should be followed. Owing to the lower per capita rate of damage, effective simplified sampling rules for S. zeamais were difficult to construct. An evaluation of the visual assessment scale rising whole ears showed that a visual scale estimating percentage damage rather than percentage loss, might be easy to construct and preferable for traders. Further work is needed to improve the usefulness of the visual scale in pest management decision support.  相似文献

Delta traps baited with maize cobs, which were infested each with one male Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (Col.: Bostrichidae), were distributed in southern Benin and collected after one, two, three and four weeks. The numbers of P. truncatus caught during the different trapping periods were not significantly different. Sixty-four percent of the trapped P. truncatus were females. Females attracted during the one-week trapping period produced a mean of 6.9 progeny during the seven days. The sex ratio of the progeny was 1:1. Trap catches with the infested cobs were on average 13 times lower than catches with 2 mg of the artificial pheromone. Estimation of P. truncatus densities in a maize store at the beginning of the storage period (based on laboratory data) revealed that small initial numbers of P. truncatus, possibly attracted by a single male, sufficed to initiate high infestation rates later in the storage season.  相似文献

Abstract: Extensive collections of Teretrius nigrescens in Mexico, Honduras, and Benin, were electrophoretically analysed to elucidate the prey spectrum of the predator. Both polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and cellulose acetate electrophoresis were used. Beetles were sampled with pheromone traps, using the synthetic aggregation pheromone of Prostephanus truncatus , and directly from farmers' maize stores. The proportion of electrophoretically detected prey protein from adult T. nigrescens in pheromone traps was low: of the 1108 specimens analysed, only in 34 cases, prey protein could be clearly identified. More frequently, prey protein was detected in adult T. nigrescens sampled in maize stores in Mexico, Honduras, and Benin, with 87 samples showing distinct prey bands of the total 1214 predators analysed. Of the 241 T. nigrescens larvae sampled in maize stores in Benin, 136 showed distinct bands of prey protein. In all samples, P. truncatus was the most frequently detected prey species. The second most often identified prey species was Sitophilus zeamais . The results are discussed with regard to various methods for prey spectrum analysis and specifically the biology of T. nigrescens .  相似文献

Laboratory experiments using whole cobs were conducted to examine the effect of varying densities of the larger grain borer, Prostephanus truncatus and the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais on rate of population increase by the histerid beetle, Teretriosoma nigrescens , a predator primarily of P. truncatus . Densities of all species of insects were determined at the end of the experiment, and an electrophoretic analysis of gut content was conducted on larval and adult T. nigrescens sampled during the experiments. Results indicated that T. nigrescens has a strong preference for P. truncatus and densities of T. nigrescens were associated only with densities of P. truncatus . The maize weevil played little role as an alternative prey or in interfering with T. nigrescens reproduction.  相似文献

In the course of three storage periods (1988–90) the predacious insects that occur in traditional maize stores in southern Togo were observed and their relationship to the introduced pest Prostephanus truncatus was investigated. The bug Xylocoris flavipes , a predator on a wide range of post-harvest pests, was the only one observed regularly and in higher numbers. Laboratory trials with P. truncatus showed that the larvae were preyed on, and no preference for any one of the three instars was detected. On average, 7.3 pest larvae were killed by larvae or adults of the predator. In glass jar trials on loose maize X. flavipes reduced the numbers of P. truncatus by 57.6% after 8 weeks. The losses and damage were reduced by 50 and 17.6%, respectively. Observations in traditional maize stores indicated a tendency to decreasing populations of X. flavipes when populations of P. truncatus increased, presumably due to the unfavourable environmental conditions created by the pest. Therefore, it is concluded that X. flavipes does not play an important role in the control of this pest.  相似文献

The insecticidal pyrazole ethiprole, applied at rates of 7.5 and 10.0 ppm either alone or in combination treatments with deltamethrin, piperonyl butoxide, and chlorpyrifos-methyl, was evaluated as a protectant of stored wheat and stored corn. The commodities were treated with six treatment combinations, including an untreated control, and held for 6 mo at 22, 27, or 32 degrees C and 57% RH. Bioassays were conducted monthly by exposing the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.), and the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), on treated wheat and the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky), and the red flour beetle on treated corn. The storage temperature of wheat did not significantly affect mortality of exposed insects (P > or = 0.05). All rice weevils were dead after 1 wk in all treatments, and no F1 adults were produced. Mortality of red flour beetles was not dependent on either chemical treatment or bioassay month, and no F1 adults were produced. The storage temperature of corn did not significantly affect mortality of exposed insects (P > or = 0.05). Mortality of maize weevils varied from 77.9 to 100% in all chemical treatments, and no F1 adults were produced. Mortality of red flour beetles was also variable among treatments and bioassay month and no F1 adults were produced. This is the first published report of a study in which pyrazoles have been evaluated against stored-grain insects.  相似文献

Migrating Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (Col.: Bostrichidae) were collected weekly with pheromone-baited funnel traps at three different sites in southern Benin for 12 months. One site was located in a primary forest, one in a peri-urban area, and one in a region with intensive agriculture. The sex of the trapped beetles was determined. The gut-content of the specimens was analyzed for remains of lignin and starch, the former indicating recent feeding on woody, the latter on a starchy substrate, such as stored maize or dried cassava. At all locations, the sex ratio of migrating P. truncatus was significantly female-biased, with the greatest proportion of females trapped at the peri-urban site. At the forest site, most beetles had lignin in their guts, while the proportion of beetles containing starch was highest in the peri-urban site. Approximately equal proportions of beetles with either starch and lignin were trapped in the region with intensive agriculture. The results are discussed with regard to the population dynamics of P. truncatus in different habitats and the flight activity of the beetles.  相似文献

Effectiveness of spinosad against seven major stored-grain insects on corn   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In January 2005, the United States Environmental Protection Agency registered spinosad as a stored grain protectant. No referenced data on the efficacy of spinosad on corn in suppressing major stored-grain insects have been published. In this paper, we evaluated the efficacy of spinosad against seven major stored-grain insects on shelled corn in the laboratory. Insect species tested were the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Jacquelin duVal); rusty grain beetle, Cryptolestesferrugineus (Stephens); lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica (F.); sawtoothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.); rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.); maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky); and Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Htibner). Corn kernels were treated with spinosad at 0, 0. 1, 0.5, 1, and 2 active ingredient (a.i.) mg/kg for controlling the seven species. Beetle adults or P. interpunctella eggs were introduced into each container holding 100 g of untreated or insecticide-treated corn. The seven insect species survived well on the control treatment, produced 28 to 336 progeny, and caused significant kernel damage after 49 days. On spinosad-treated corn, adult mortality of C. ferrugineus, R. dominica, 0. surinamensis, S. oryzae, and S. zeamais was 〉 98% at 1 and 2 mg/kg after 12 days. Spinosad at≥ 0.5 mg/kg completely suppressed egg-to-larval survival after 21 days and egg-to-adult emergence of P. interpunctella after 49 days, whereas 16% T. castaneum adults survived at 1 mg/kg after 12 days. Spinosad at 1 or 2 mg/kg provided complete or near complete suppression of progeny production and kernel damage of all species after 49 days. Our results indicate that spinosad at the current labeled rate of 1 mg/kg is effective against the seven stored-grain insect pests on corn.  相似文献

This study was carried out to establish the extent to which an invasive stored products pest, Prostephanus truncatus Horn exploits wood as a feeding and breeding resource in Kenya. Twenty seven out of 84 native and agroforestry trees and shrubs supported the breeding of P. truncatus under laboratory conditions. Adult survival (<1% to 18%) for 8 weeks was recorded on 51 tree species that did not support breeding. The breeding success of this beetle varied widely between host tree species and showed no obvious trends based on tree systematics or wood hardness. Studies of P. truncatus survival on two host tree species found that the greatest increase in the P. truncatus population occurred on stem sapwood, whilst the smallest population increase was on twigs. Breeding also varied greatly from season to season; studies on ten selected host species showed that reproduction was often greatest in wood samples collected and tested during the dry season in September. The implications of these findings for the management of P. truncatus infestations in farm stored maize are discussed.  相似文献

Ear-colonizing insects and diseases that reduce yield and impose health threats by mycotoxin contaminations in the grain, are critical impediments for corn (Zea mays L.) production in the southern United States. Ten germplasm lines from the Germplasm Enhancement of Maize (GEM) Program in Ames, IA, and Raleigh, NC, and 10 lines (derived from GEM germplasm) from the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station in Lubbock, TX, were examined in 2007 and 2008 with local resistant and susceptible controls. Four types of insect damage and smut disease (Ustilago maydis) infection, as well as gene X environment (G X E) interaction, was assessed on corn ears under field conditions. Insect damage on corn ears was further separated as cob and kernel damage. Cob penetration rating was used to assess corn earworm [Helicoverpa zea (Boddie)] and fall armyworm [Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith)] feeding on corn cobs, whereas kernel damage was assessed using three parameters: 1) percentage of kernels discolored by stink bugs (i.e., brown stink bug [Euschistus serous (Say)], southern green stink bug [Nezara viridula (L.)], and green stink bug [Chinavia (Acrosternum) hilare (Say)]; 2) percentage of maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky)-damaged kernels; and 3) percentage of kernels damaged by sap beetle (Carpophilus spp.), "chocolate milkworm" (Moodna spp.), and pink scavenger caterpillar [Pyroderces (Anatrachyntis) rileyi (Walsingham)]. The smut infection rates on ears, tassels, and nodes also were assessed. Ear protection traits (i.e., husk tightness and extension) in relation to insect damage and smut infection also were examined. Significant differences in insect damage, smut infection, and husk protection traits were detected among the germplasm lines. Three of the 20 germplasm lines were identified as being multiple insect and smut resistant. Of the three lines, entries 5 and 7 were derived from DKXL370, which was developed using corn germplasm from Brazil, whereas entry 14 was derived from CUBA117.  相似文献

Acute food shortage due to the inability to protectand preserve crops fromquality and quantity deteriora-tion arising from microbial, vertebrate and insect pestinfestations has been a pri mordial problem confrontingNigeria and other developing countries in the tropics(Talukder&Howse,1994;Adedire,2001).Insect pests cause a great deal of losses of storedfood products, especially in the tropics where foodproducts usually are susceptible to attack during thestorage phase of the crops(Sighamony et a…  相似文献

The efficacy of 13 isolates of entomopathogenic fungi belonging to Beauveria , Metarhizium or Paecilomyces spp. was assessed against Sitophilus zeamais (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and Prostephanus truncatus (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) using a total immersion bioassay technique in the laboratory. Fungi were applied at concentrations of 1 ×10 7 and 1 ×10 8 conidia mL -1 for P. truncatus and S. zeamais , respectively. All isolates tested were virulent to P. truncatus (98-100% mortality, and median survival time (MST) ranged from 2.85-4.05 days). Metarhizium anisopliae and B. bassiana were also virulent to S. zeamais (92-100% mortality, MST ranged from 3.58-6.28 days). The isolate of Paecilomyces sp. was found to be the least virulent against S. zeamais , causing only 26.32 ±4.29% mortality with MST of 10.38 ±0.29 days. P. truncatus proved more susceptible to the entomopathogenic fungi tested than S. zeamais . One M. anisopliae (PPRC-EE) and three B. bassiana isolates (PPRC-HH, PPRC-9609 and PPRC-9614) were selected for further study and dose-mortality relationships were assessed on S. zeamais . The tested concentrations ranged from 1 ×10 4 -1 ×10 7 conidia mL -1 . M. anisopliae (PPRC-EE) showed the lowest LC 50 (3.39 ×10 5 conidia mL -1 ) followed by B. bassiana PPRC-HH (2.04 ×10 6 conidia mL -1 ). PPRC-9609 and PPRC-9614 showed slight differences in LC 50 but not at LC 90 . The results revealed the higher potency of M. anisopliae as compared with the B. bassiana isolates tested. The study suggests that the use of entomopathogenic fungi may hold promise as an alternative method to control pests of stored-products in Ethiopia.  相似文献

Post-harvest losses for maize and beans are common storage challenges affecting Tanzania's smallholder and large-scale farmers' storage facilities. Consequently, this leads to a reduction of over 50% of harvested grain qualitatively and quantitively per year. Therefore, this experimental study was conducted at the entomological laboratory of the Sokoine University of Agriculture Tanzania, where the research was aimed to assess different common storage insect pests of beans and maize at Morogoro major markets (i.e., Kihonda, Mazimbu and Morogoro Central Market) with similar storage conditions in Morogoro municipality. The complete block design (CBD) with three experimental replications was used. Where locations (Kihonda, Mazimbu and Central market) markets were considered as experimental treatments. The results obtained show that there were no significant differences in number of insect pests (such as maize weevils and bean bruchids) identified between the Kihonda and Central markets (P > 0.05). However, there is a significant difference (P< 0.05) between Mazimbu and other markets regarding the number of insect pest multiplication resulting from the storage condition of those grains in a particular market. Nevertheless, continuous winnowing of stored grains was observed to significantly intensify the infestation of the storage pest in maize and common beans. Therefore, alternatively, to reduce insect pest infestation to maize and common beans in storage facilities, it is important to avoid constant winnowing of stored grains.  相似文献

Spinosad is a commercial reduced-risk pesticide that is naturally derived. Spinosad's performance was evaluated on four classes of wheat (hard red winter, hard red spring, soft red winter, and durum wheats) against adults of the lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica (F.); rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.); sawtoothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.); red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst); and larvae of the Indianmeal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hübner). Beetle adults (25) or P. interpunctella eggs (50) were exposed to untreated wheat and wheat treated with spinosad at 0.1 and 1 mg (AI)/kg of grain. On all untreated wheat classes, adult beetle mortality ranged from 0 to 6%, and P. interpunctella larval mortality ranged from 10 to 19%. The effects of spinosad on R. dominica and P. interpunctella were consistent across all wheat classes. Spinosad killed all exposed R. dominica adults and significantly suppressed progeny production (84-100%) and kernel damage (66-100%) at both rates compared with untreated wheat. Spinosad was extremely effective against P. interpunctella on all wheat classes at 1 mg/kg, based on larval mortality (97.6-99.6%), suppression of egg-to-adult emergence (93-100%), and kernel damage (95-100%), relative to similar effects on untreated wheats. The effects of spinosad on S. oryzae varied among wheat classes and between spinosad rates. Spinosad was effective against S. oryzae, O. surinamensis and T. castaneun only on durum wheat at 1 mg/kg. Our results suggest spinosad to be a potential grain protectant for R. dominica and P. interpunctella management in stored wheat.  相似文献

For small-scale farmers who maintain genetically diverse crop populations, aspects of the storage of their seeds and harvest may be just as important for successful farming as those related to productivity. The community of Yaxcaba, Yucatan, Mexico was studied to understand how the conditions under which Maya farmers store their maize harvests influence their seed selection practices and the diversity of maize varieties grown. Most farmers select their maize seed based primarily on ear characteristics and secondarily on grain characters. Farmers incorporate storability concerns by selecting for an archetypal healthy ear and by conducting selection in several steps between harvest and planting of the subsequent crop generation. Most farmers store their maize harvest in the husk, initially in the field and then in rustic granaries constructed of logs and palm thatch, in which farmers conserve separately their different seed lots. All local landrace populations show morphological adaptation (principally husk characteristics) for local storage conditions, indicating that storability has been an important selection pressure on traditional maize. Storability also appears to be a key factor working against the straightforward adoption of improved maize seed in Yaxcaba. Local farmers value many qualities of improved maize varieties, but their principal complaint is that improved maize cannot be conserved reliably under local storage conditions. Nearly all farmers who utilize improved seed stock in Yaxcaba grow locally adapted or ‘creolized’ versions of improved varieties, displaying characteristics of local maize landraces that facilitate their storage.  相似文献

The dynamics of infestation and losses of stored maize due to the larger grain borer (Prostephanus truncatus Horn) and maize weevils (Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky) were investigated in Tanzania. In single species populations, significantly higher maize damage (P ≤ 0.05) was caused by P. truncatus (23.3%) compared to S. zeamais (6.4%). Weight losses caused by P. truncatus were higher (12.7%) than for S. zeamais (6.7%) under similar conditions. A higher proportion of P. truncatus in the initial infestation population led to significantly higher (≤0.05) maize damage compared to equal or higher proportions of S. zeamais. Irrespective of the initial number of S. zeamais, population size increased to levels higher than for P. truncatus. Maize losses in unimproved storage structures were >80% compared to <2.5% in improved structures under natural infestation. Inter-specific competition appeared to influence the dynamics of infestation, damage levels and weight losses. The first two months of storage were critical for damaging insect populations to build up.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were carried out to evaluated three diatomaceous earth (DE) formulations--Protect-It, PyriSec (at dose rates 500, 1000, and 1500 ppm), and DEA-P (at dose rates 75, 150, and 500 ppm)--against the larger grain borer, Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae), adults in stored maize, Zea mays L., at three temperatures (20, 25, and 30 degrees C) and two relative humidity (RH) levels (55 and 75%). At these conditions, the capability of progeny production in the treated substrate also was assessed. Adult survival was high, at all doses of Protect-It and PyriSec. Progeny production was also high. In contrast with the other two DEs, DEA-P was highly effective and caused complete mortality to the exposed P. truncatus adults, even at the lowest dose rate (75 ppm). In addition, progeny production was completely suppressed. Generally, Protect-it and PyriSec were more effective at 20 degrees C than at 30 degrees C. In contrast, the efficacy of DEA-P was continuously high in all temperatures and relative humidities examined.  相似文献
