Although mycorrhizal colonization provides a bioprotectional effect against a broad range of soil-borne pathogens, including plant parasitic nematodes, the commercial use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) as biocontrol agents is still in its infancy. One of the main reasons is the poor understanding of the modes of action. Most AMF mode of action studies focused on AMF-bacterial/fungal pathogens. Only few studies so far examined AMF-plant parasitic nematode interactions. Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine whether the AMF Glomus intraradices was able to incite systemic resistance in banana plants towards Radopholus similis and Pratylenchus coffeae, two plant parasitic nematodes using a split-root compartmental set-up. The AMF reduced both nematode species by more than 50%, even when the AMF and the plant parasitic nematodes were spatially separated. The results obtained demonstrate for the first time that AMF have the ability to induce systemic resistance against plant parasitic nematodes in a root system.  相似文献

Nematodes belonging to the genus Hysterothylacium (family Raphidascarididae) infect various species of marine fish in both the larval and adult stages. Humans can be accidentally infected upon eating infected seafood. In spite of their importance, relatively little is known of their occurrence and systematics in Australia. An examination of various species of marine teleosts in Australian waters revealed a high prevalence of Hysterothylacium larval types. In the present study, seven previously undescribed Hysterothylacium larval morphotypes (V to VII and IX to XII) were discovered. In total we found 10 different morphotypes and we genetically characterised nine morphotypes identified. A morphological dichotomous identification key has been established to differentiate these morphotypes. Since some larvae of Hysterothylacium from marine fishes cannot be differentiated morphologically from other nematode larvae, such as Paraheterotyphlum, Heterotyphlum, Iheringascaris and Lapetascaris, the first and second internal transcribed spacers (ITS-1 and ITS-2) of nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) of these larvae were characterised to confirm their taxonomic status. This genetic characterisation implied that some distinct morphotypes belong to different developmental stages of the same species. In addition, it revealed that some morphotypes can comprise distinct genotypes. No match was found between ITS-1 and ITS-2 sequences obtained from larvae in the present study and those from adults available in the GenBank, highlighting the lack of knowledge on occurrence of adult nematodes infecting Australian fish.  相似文献

In 2005, draft sequences of the genomes of Trypanosoma brucei, Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania major, also known as the Tri-Tryp genomes, were published. These protozoan parasites are the causative agents of three distinct insect-borne diseases, namely sleeping sickness, Chagas disease and leishmaniasis, all with a worldwide distribution. Despite the large estimated evolutionary distance among them, a conserved core of ~6,200 trypanosomatid genes was found among the Tri-Tryp genomes. Extensive analysis of these genomic sequences has greatly increased our understanding of the biology of these parasites and their host-parasite interactions. In this article, we review the recent advances in the comparative genomics of these three species. This analysis also includes data on additional sequences derived from other trypanosmatid species, as well as recent data on gene expression and functional genomics. In addition to facilitating the identification of key parasite molecules that may provide a better understanding of these complex diseases, genome studies offer a rich source of new information that can be used to define potential new drug targets and vaccine candidates for controlling these parasitic infections.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Callaspidia defonscolombei was found to be a common, solitary, thelytokous parasitoid of aphidophagous syrphid larvae. In 1977 it was bivoltine with adults being most numerous in early August and late September. It is probably polyphagous.
2. An analysis of host searching behaviour suggests that females respond to an aphid odour bringing them to the region of an aphid colony.
3. Syrphid hosts are located within the aphid colony by response to a contact chemical. There is a host size preference, only larger second and third instar larvae being attacked.

The effects of distributional patterns of the host on the acquisition of Plagiorchis noblei cercariae by Aedes aegypti larvae were determined. Mosquito larvae that were allowed to disperse were more susceptible to infection than confined larvae. Because these mosquito larvae are known to aggregate in light and disperse in darkness, they are more likely to acquire P. noblei infections at night. The timing of cercarial emergence in relation to the distributional patterns of the mosquito host is discussed.  相似文献

Previous studies on frequency-dependent food selection (changing food preferences in response to changes in relative food abundance) have focused on predators and parasitoids. These organisms utilize several victims during their lifetime. We introduce the case of parasites which, having accepted a host, do not change it. We propose two alternative models to explain the biased occurrence of parasites on different host types: (1) through the option of rejecting less-preferred hosts prior to accepting one of them; (2) by differential parasite survival on different host types. These models predict that host rejection, but not differential survival, can create frequency-dependent parasitism (FDP). Unlike previously described factors responsible for frequency dependence of food selection, which act through changing the foraging behaviour of individual predators or parasitoids, FDP involves no adjustment of parasite foraging strategy according to previous feeding experience. The mite Hemisarcoptes coccophagus is an obligate parasite of armoured scale insects (Homptera: Diaspididae). Our field data show that H. coccophagus is found more frequently on ovipositing than on young host females. Our model, combining the effects of host rejection and differential survival, is used to estimate the relative contribution of these factors to parasite biased occurrence on different hosts. The contribution of differential survival was dominant in H. coccophagus, and overode any effect of host rejection. Nevertheless, our prediction that FDP may be found in parasites is supported by literature data about a parasitic water mite.  相似文献

Summary Rhinanthus minor (Yellow-rattle) is a widespread hemiparasitic plant of grassland habitats throughout Britain. Association analysis of the dune vegetation at Holme-next-the-Sea in eastern England revealed only two potential host plants through positive association. In contrast direct examination of the root systems revealed haustorial connections with 20 host species. The number of species parasitized by one plant ranged from one to seven. Data from another four sites in Britain and one in central Europe indicate that the natural host range of R. minor encompasses at least 50 species from 18 families with 22% in the Leguminosae and 30% in the Gramineae. Comparison of the number of haustorial connections made to each species with the abundance of roots in the soil shows that R. minor is a highly selective parasite, but that the selectivity is not consistent between populations or between plants from different parts of the same population. The reasons for host selectivity are discussed.  相似文献

The present paper deals with new records of nematoda of the family Anisakidae Railliet et Henry, 1912. During a study of the parasites of marine fishes (shark, ray and marine teleosts) of Bay of Bengal, females of interesting nematode parasites were found in stomach and body cavity of Chiloscyllium indicum (Gmelin), Torpedo panthera (Olfers), Pomadasys masculatus Bloch and Sphyraena obtusata Cuvier from Visakhapatnam, Bheemunipatnam and Yarada (Andhra Pradesh). Most of the characters tally with Porrocaecum galeocerdonis and Hysterothylacium engraulisi, except for minor variations. Because of the non-availability of the male, it is not possible to assign the present specimens to any of the known species of the genera Porrocaecum and Hysterothylacium. Hence these are referred as Porrocaecum sp. and Hysterothylacium sp. Chiloscyllium indicum and Torpedo panthera are new host records. Visakhapatnam, Bheemunipatnam and Yarada are the new locality records.  相似文献

The flesh-burrowing parasitic isopod Ichthyoxenus fushanensis was found infecting the body cavity of a freshwater fish, Varicorhinus bacbatulus , in heterosexual pairs. Herein we investigate the question of how the host body size may constrain the parasite size and clutch size by analyzing the interactions among the body size and clutch size of the parasite, and host size. Due to the low transmission rate of I. fushanensis to its host and the positive relationship between clutch size and female size, selection may favor larger females with larger clutch sizes to compensate for massive losses of manca (the free-living juveniles). The path model reveals that clutch size depends not only directly on female size, but also on the sizes of her host and mate. Female size also depends on the sizes of the host and her mate. A negative correlation exists between the body sizes of the paired males and females. This negative correlation may be regarded as a consequence of competition for limited available space or other resources provided by the host. The effects of host size on parasite size, however, act on the total volume of both sexes as a whole, not specifically on either the female or the male. In this case, the available space/resources may not allow both individuals of different sexes to evolve toward a larger size simultaneously. Under the constraint of host size, a strategy of reducing the body size of the paired male may provide a way to increase the body size of the paired female and achieve a larger clutch size.  相似文献

Third-stage infective larvae of the canine hookworm Ancylostoma caninum resume feeding in vitro in response to several stimuli. Experiments were conducted to characterize the in vitro feeding behavior of several hookworm species. Reduced glutathione and, to a lesser extent, canine and human serum stimulated third-stage larvae of Ancylostoma duodenale to resume feeding. Glutathione-induced feeding reached a maximum by 16 hr and was concentration-dependent between 0- and 15-mM glutathione. Oxidized glutathione and the reducing agents dithiothreitol and L-cysteine failed to induce feeding, suggesting that reducing conditions alone were not stimulatory. Serum incubated with glutathione was the most efficient stimulus for Ancylostoma ceylanicum, Ancylostoma braziliense, and Ancylostoma tubaeforme larvae, whereas Uncinaria stenocephala larvae responded best to canine serum alone. Necator americanus larvae did not resume feeding in response to glutathione, serum, glutathione plus serum, or linoleic acid (0.1-10 mM). These differences in feeding behavior suggest that generalizations concerning hookworm biology must be interpreted cautiously.  相似文献

Studies of avian brood parasite systems have typically investigated the mimicry of host eggs by specialist parasites. Yet, several examples of similarity between host and parasite chick appearance or begging calls suggest that the escalation of host–parasite arms races may also lead to visual or vocal mimicry at the nestling stage. Despite this, there have been no large-scale comparative studies of begging calls to test whether the similarity of host and parasite is greater than predicted by chance or phylogenetic distance within a geographically distinct species assemblage. Using a survey of the begging calls of all native forest passerines in New Zealand, we show that the begging call of the host-specialist shining cuckoo ( Chrysococcyx lucidus ) is most similar to that of its grey warbler ( Gerygone igata ) host compared to any of the other species, and that this is unlikely to have occurred by chance. Randomization tests revealed that the incorporation of the shining cuckoo's begging calls into our species-set consistently reduced the phylogenetic signal within cluster trees based on begging call similarity. By contrast, the removal of the grey warbler calls did not reduce the phylogenetic signal in the begging call similarity trees. These two results support a scenario in which coevolution of begging calls has not taken place: the begging call of the host retains its phylogenetic signal, whereas that of the parasite has changed to match that of its host.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 98 , 208–216.  相似文献
