Reproductive interactions between two Australian reptile tick species   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In South Australia the two tick species Amblyomma limbatum and Aponomma hydrosauri share the same common reptile host species, but have allopatric distributions which abut along a narrow parapatric boundary. Reproductive interference is a mechanism that has previously been suggested could contribute to maintaining the boundary. Populations of each species were established in pens within the range of Aponomma hydrosauri. Pens held either each species alone, or the two species together. The performance of females in those pens was monitored over 28 months. There was no indication that the proportion of attached females which mated and engorged was reduced by the presence of heterospecifics. There was no indication that the time taken to mate, engorge and detach was any longer in the presence of heterospecifics. The experiment did not support the hypothesis that reproductive interference contributes to maintaining the parapatric boundary. However, Amblyomma limbatum in the pens had a shorter season of reproductive activity, and achieved much smaller numbers of reproductive females. This may inhibit successful colonization of cooler habitats to the south of its distribution.  相似文献

Summary Reproductive interference between three species of reptile tick, Aponomma hydrosauri, Amblyomma albolimbatum and Amb. limbatum was investigated. Adults of two species attach together on the same lizard hosts in narrow overlap zones at parapatric boundaries between species, providing opportunities for interference. The possibility of reproductive interference was suggested because of similarities in the sexual communication systems.Three forms of interference were found in laboratory experiments. Firstly male movement to search for sexually receptive females was inhibited when females of two species were present on the same host, probably because of signal interference. Secondly, a nonspecific, short range attractant pheromone led males into non-conspecific courtship attempts which reduced the time for conspecific courtships. Thirdly Amb. albolimbatum males physically blocked the genitalia of female Ap. hydrosauri after unsuccessful non-conspecific courtship attempts. Field data showed this behaviour was common in both Amblyomma species after conspecific matings. Reproductive interference would reduce the fitness of each species in sympatry, and may contribute to the maintenance of the narrow parapatric boundaries.  相似文献

We report the isolation and properties of several species of bacteria from Siberian permafrost. Half of the isolates were spore-forming bacteria unable to grow or metabolize at subzero temperatures. Other Gram-positive isolates metabolized, but never exhibited any growth at - 10 degrees C. One Gram-negative isolate metabolized and grew at - 10 degrees C, with a measured doubling time of 39 days. Metabolic studies of several isolates suggested that as temperature decreased below + 4 degrees C, the partitioning of energy changes with much more energy being used for cell maintenance as the temperature decreases. In addition, cells grown at - 10 degrees C exhibited major morphological changes at the ultrastructural level.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted in the Mount Mary region of South Australia where the distributions of the two reptile-tick speciesAponomma hydrosauri andAmblyomma limbatum narrowly overlap. Engorged larvae and nymphs were placed in boxes with and without access to predators and left for 1 week. At two out of five sites there was greater loss from open access boxes in replicates during warmer periods of the year. Predation by ants appears to be the most likely explanation for the loss of ticks.  相似文献

Very little is known about the primary carbon metabolism of the high mountain plant Ranunculus glacialis. It is a species with C3 photosynthesis, but with exceptionally high malate content in its leaves, the biological significance of which remains unclear. 13C/12C-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) and 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) labelling were used to study the carbon metabolism of R. glacialis, paying special attention to respiration. Although leaf dark respiration was high, the temperature response had a Q10 of 2, and the respiratory quotient (CO2 produced divided by O2 consumed) was nearly 1, indicating that the respiratory pool is comprised of carbohydrates. Malate, which may be a large carbon substrate, was not respired. However, when CO2 fixed by photosynthesis was labelled, little labelling of the CO2 subsequently respired in the dark was detected, indicating that: (i) most of the carbon recently assimilated during photosynthesis is not respired in the dark; and (ii) the carbon used for respiration originates from (unlabelled) reserves. This is the first demonstration of such a low metabolic coupling of assimilated and respired carbon in leaves. The biological significance of the uncoupling between assimilation and respiration is discussed.  相似文献

Understanding the factors that regulate geographical variation in species richness has been one of the fundamental questions in ecology for decades, but our knowledge of the cause of geographical variation in species richness remains poor. This is particularly true for herpetofaunas (including amphibians and reptiles). Here, using correlation and regression analyses, we examine the relationship of herpetofaunal species richness in 245 localities across China with 30 environmental factors, which include nearly all major environmental factors that are considered to explain broad-scale species richness gradients in such theories as ambient energy, water–energy dynamics, productivity, habitat heterogeneity, and climatic stability. We found that the species richness of amphibians and reptiles is moderately to strongly correlated with most of the environmental variables examined, and that the best fit models, which include explanatory variables of temperature, precipitation, net primary productivity, minimum elevation, and range in elevation, explain ca 70% the variance in species richness for both amphibians and reptiles after accounting for sample area. Although water and temperature are important explanatory variables to both amphibians and reptiles, water variables explain more variance in amphibian species richness than in reptile species richness whereas temperature variables explain more variance in reptile species richness than in amphibian species richness, which is consistent with different physiological requirements of the two groups of organisms.  相似文献

Metabolic respiration by groups of resting Myrmica ruginodis and M. scabrinodis worker ants from five sites representing a range of latitudes, have been compared by measuring rates of CO(2) production-standardised by fat-free weight-at 5 and 25 degrees C. M. ruginodis which lives in cooler habitats than M. scabrinodis consistently produced more CO(2). At 5 degrees C ants of both species from southern latitudes were metabolically more active than those from more northerly latitudes, whereas at 25 degrees C the situation was reversed. Estimates of Q10 were positively correlated with latitude indicating that the respiratory metabolism of northern populations increases relatively more in response to rising temperatures than southern populations. Values of Q10 at different latitudes were the same for both species. The results are discussed in terms of seasonal fluctuations of temperature at different latitudes.  相似文献

Summary Few quantitative studies have examined the ecological consequences of similarities and/or differences in mating behaviour of parapatric species. Reproductive interference occurs between several parapatric species of Australian reptile tick, due to similarities in their mating behaviour (Andrews et al. 1982a). Attempts to determine whether reproductive interference serves to maintain parapatry between Amblyomma limbatum and Aponomma hydrosauri have been hindered because of difficulties in providing conditions conducive to conspecific mating in Amb. limbatum. The present study examined whether off-host and/or onhost temperature influenced the subsequent mating behaviour (i.e. the proportion of females that mate and the time when mating occurs) of these two species. Irrespective of the temperature experienced by ticks prior to host attachment, specific on-host temperatures were needed to induce mating in Amb. limbatum (i.e. host cloacal temperatures >32° C prior to the time of peak mating activity). Significantly more Amb. limbatum females were mated and the time taken by females to mate decreased with increasing on-host temperatures. mating in Ap. hydrosauri occurred over a wider range of on-host temperatures and the time when mating occurred did not alter at different on-host temperatures. In addition, significantly more Ap. hydrosauri males moved and each male made more moves on hosts than did Amb. limbatum males. It is suggested that Ap. hydrosauri may in consequence have a competitive mating advantage over Amb. limbatum at a boundary. Similarities in mating behaviour, on the other hand, increase the probability of reproductive interference, hence reduce the reproductive fitness of colonizing females of both species. We propose that similarities and differences in mating behaviour could play a critical role in the maintenance of parapatric boundaries.  相似文献

The mating behaviour of three species of reptile tick, Aponomma hydrosauri, Amblyomma albolimbatum and Amb. limbatum is similar and involves a female sex pheromone which activates males to detach from their hosts and search. After contacting females, a stereotyped six-phase courtship sequence occurs. There are qualitative differences between the species in courtship behaviour at phase 3 (reversal of position by dorsally mounted males) and phase 6 (the copulation position). On-host observations of non-conspecific mating show that females of the three species have species-specific activation pheromones, which is contrary to reports in other species of tick. Such specificity should result in reproductive isolation of the three species; however, under certain circumstances it may not prevent non-conspecific contacts between the sexes. Off-host observations of courtship behaviour show that once males of the three species contact non-conspecific females, they attempt courtship and are persistent with their courtship. Rarely did non-conspecific courtships proceed beyond phase 4 of the courtship sequence, as non-conspecific females did not lift their bodies to allow males venter contact. Differences between the species in leg orientation in the copulation position, together with body size differences, are responsible for a complete barrier to successful non-conspecific copulation. The observations illustrate the role that behavioural mechanisms play in reproductively isolating these three species of tick.  相似文献

1. A comparative study was made in man, rhesus monkey, rat and rabbit of the urinary excretion of 2-, 4- and 5-methoxy- and 2,4-, 2,5- and 4,5-dimethoxy-6-sulphanilamidopyrimidines given orally. 2. In the rabbit, 70-80% of the dose of each drug was excreted in 2 days, mainly as N(4)-acetyl derivatives, except 2,5-dimethoxy-6-sulphanilamidopyrimidine, which was mainly excreted unchanged. 3. In the rat, 50-70% of the dose of each drug was excreted in 2 days, except the 2-methoxy and 2,4-dimethoxy compounds, whose excretion was about 30%. The N(4)-acetyl derivatives accounted for 20-70% of the drugs excreted, except the 2,5-dimethoxy derivative, which was excreted unchanged. 4. In the rhesus monkey, some 40-60% of the dose of the 2-methoxy, 2,4-dimethoxy and 2,5-dimethoxy compounds was excreted in 2 days, but the 4-methoxy, 5-methoxy and 4,5-dimethoxy compounds were excreted at less than half this rate. The 4-methoxy, 5-methoxy and 4,5-dimethoxy compounds were highly acetylated (80-90%) whereas the 2-methoxy compound was poorly acetylated (17%) and the 2,5-dimethoxy compound hardly at all. The major metabolite of the 2,4-dimethoxy compound in the monkey was the N(1)-glucuronide. 5. In man, 30% of the dose of the 4-methoxy and 2,4-dimethoxy compounds was excreted in 24 hr., whereas the 4,5-dimethoxy compound (Fanasil) was very slowly excreted (12% in 2 days). The 4-methoxy compound was well acetylated (65%), but the 2,4- and 4,5-dimethoxy compounds were not (20-30%). The main metabolite of the 2,4-dimethoxy compound in man was the N(1)-glucuronide. 6. N(1)-Glucuronide formation occurred extensively only with the 2,4-dimethoxy compound and only in man and the rhesus monkey. It did not occur in the rabbit and only to a minor extent in the rat. 7. The 2,5-dimethoxy compound was not significantly acetylated in vivo in the rabbit, rat or monkey, but acetylation occurred in vitro in rabbit or monkey liver homogenates. 8. Although neuronal cells are highly vulnerable to oxidative stress, recent studies suggest that production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) increases during and is essential for neuronal differentiation. In addition, we have previously found that heme biosynthesis is up-regulated during retinoic acid-induced differentiation of Neuro2a cells. In the current study, we showed that this up-regulation of heme biosynthesis during differentiation is ROS-dependent. Furthermore, we found that ROS-dependent induction of heme oxygenase, which degrades heme and acts as an anti-oxidant, and catalase, another anti-oxidant enzyme that contains heme as a prosthetic group, occurs during differentiation. These results suggest that heme biosynthesis following the degradation of heme protects Neuro2a cells from oxidative stress caused by ROS during differentiation.  相似文献

Despite controversy over alternative definitions, the species is the fundamental operational unit of biodiversity, and species are the building-blocks of conservation. But is a ‘species’ from one part of the world the same as a ‘species’ from elsewhere? Our meta-analysis of molecular phylogenetic data reveals that reptile and amphibian species distributed in temperate-zone areas of the Northern Hemisphere are younger than taxa from the Southern Hemisphere, probably reflecting the greater impact of past climatic variation on Northern Hemisphere habitats. Because a species'' age may influence its vulnerability to anthropogenic threats, geographical variation in species ages should be incorporated into conservation planning.  相似文献

The influence of feeding state on cold-adapted metabolism was investigated in the adults of two carabid beetles, Trechisibus antarcticus and Oopterus soledadinus (Coleoptera: Carabidae), which have been introduced to sub-Antarctic South Georgia. The metabolic rates in both fed and starved O. soledadinus and T. antarcticus were determined at eight temperatures ranging from 0 to 35°C, using a Servomex 570A oxygen analyser. There was no significant difference in the metabolic rates between the fed and starved animals of each species. In T. antarcticus this ranged from 0.28 to 3.84 ml O2 g−1 h−1, and in O. soledadinus from 0.19 to 2.80 ml O2 g−1 h−1 at 0 and 35°C, respectively. In each of the four experimental groups there was a strong positive correlation between metabolic rate and temperature, with the highest increase occurring between 0 and 5°C. In contrast, the metabolic rate was significantly negatively correlated with initial live weight of the beetles at most temperatures. The results are discussed comparatively with other species and against a background of the ecology of the two carabids at South Georgia. Received: 26 August 1996 / Accepted: 3 February 1997  相似文献
