Juncus articulatus, a species introduced to Australia, is codominant over large areas of Mother of Ducks Lagoon but is rare in other lagoons. It occurs widely within the lagoon but is concentrated in lower, wetter areas that are more disturbed by birds and cattle. This suggests that J. articulatus may be separated over elevation (and therefore water regime) and disturbance gradients from the native grass Glyceria australis, the dominant species in the lagoon. This paper compares the growth and interaction of G. australis and J. articulatus under different water regimes. The species responded differently to water regime both in monoculture and in mixture. Above ground production of J. articulatus was greatest under fluctuating water levels, least under a damp water regime and intermediate under flooded conditions. G. australis production was greatest under the damp, least under the flooded and intermediate under the fluctuating water regime. The outcome of interaction is dependent on water regime and time. After one year J. articulatus was the superior competitor under all water regimes. At the end of two years J. articulatus was still the superior competitor under fluctuating and flooded water regimes but not under the damp regime. The change in outcome after two years was due to the competitive superiority of G. australis during the second year under all water regimes. The relative importance and the management implications for the invasive potential of J. articulatus are assessed in shallow Australian wetlands with fluctuating water regimes.  相似文献

Shallow, still-water wetlands on the New England Tablelands, an upland region of eastern Australia, have changed in the past 160 years in their types, abundance and in the diversity of their water regimes. These changes have been natural, intentional or the unintentional consequences of management actions. Changing attitudes and land-use and management practices have led to a large proportion of natural wetlands being drained or dammed, but with a relatively high proportion of those remaining being conserved in some way. The water regimes of those that remain have been greatly altered, usually increasing their stability (more continuously either inundated or dry). Farm dams and domestic water-storage dams are two new and distinct wetland types that are far more numerous than the wetland types in the original landscape. We discuss how changes in water regime have modified wetland attributes. Two case studies: Mother of Ducks Lagoon and the Llangothlin group of lagoons, are used as examples of how attitudes towards wetlands and reasons for water regime alteration have interacted with the tenure and management of wetlands on local, regional, national and international scales.  相似文献

Microbiological, biogeochemical, and isotope geochemical investigations of the upper sediments of the Vistula and Curonian lagoons, Baltic Sea, were carried out. High content of organic matter in the sediments was responsible for the high numbers (over 1010 cells cm?3) and activity of heterotrophic microorganisms. The calculated integral rates of dark CO2 assimilation for the upper 30 cm of the sediments varied 12.5 to 38.8 mmol m?2 day?1 and were somewhat higher in the Curonian Lagoon than in the Vistula Lagoon. Integral rates of sulfate reduction were higher in the more saline Vistula Lagoon. Rapid consumption of sulfates of the pore water resulted in intensified methanogenesis, with significantly higher rates detected in the silts of the Curonian Lagoon. High rates of methanogenesis in the Curonian Lagoon correlated with higher methane levels in its upper sediments and near-bottom water. The highest rates of methane oxidation were detected in the uppermost sediment horizons (oxidized or slightly reduced), which was an indication of the barrier role of aerobic methanotrophic bacteria. The calculated methane flows from the sediments into the water column were 0.45 and 0.007 mmol m?2 day?1 for the Vistula and Curonian Lagoons, respectively. Low methane flow from the sediments of the Curonian Lagoon resulted probably from the specific weather (wind) conditions during sampling. The near-stormy conditions in the Curonian Lagoon caused sediment detachment, resulting in methane release into the water column.  相似文献

The brackish coastal wetlands in the Bundala National Park, the only RAMSAR site of southern Sri Lanka, are an important waterfowl habitat and economic zone. Bundala Lagoon, one of the three key lagoons of the Bundala wetlands, remains largely intact and relatively pristine, but the other two interconnected lagoons, namely, Embilikala and Malala, are impacted by drainage from 25.6 km2 of upstream agricultural lands. Seasonal variations of water quality of the three lagoons and the key processes affecting water quality and quantity in these lagoons were studied during three agricultural seasons, to better understand the characteristics of the system. Bundala Lagoon, which was not affected by agriculture, recorded the highest ammonia and total nitrogen concentrations and the lowest phosphorus levels. Higher phosphorus levels in Embilikala Lagoon were related to the upstream agricultural activities with 65% of its total phosphorus measured being reactive phosphorous. Phosphorus additions occurred during the early months of the paddy cultivating seasons. Processes affecting the water quality of the Embilikala-Malala lagoon system included agricultural drainage, livestock additions, and breaching of the sand bar between Malala Lagoon and the sea. The salinity level of the Bundala Lagoon was higher than the others due to the connection to the sea, salt farms in the western part, and less dilution of salt from relatively low surface runoff and rainwater. All three lagoons reported pH levels conducive to most aquatic species. The primary production by phytoplankton in the lagoons of the Bundala wetland was phosphorus limited regarding their ratios of nitrogen to phosphorus. This study provides an overview of the present status of the lagoons of the wetland. Further work is needed to evaluate the impact of the external nutrient and water inputs on the flora and fauna of the lagoon environments. Suitable management practices to ensure the sustainability of the lagoon ecosystem can be derived through this increased understanding.  相似文献

对不同放牧强度下矮嵩草草甸植物垂穗披碱草和鹅绒委陵菜的生长和繁殖特性进行了5年研究。结果表明,垂穗披碱草株高、分蘖数、地上物量、地下生物量、有性繁殖效力在不放牧或轻度放牧下最大,营养生长效力在重度放牧中最大,而贮藏效力在重度放牧中最小。鹅绒委陵菜叶数、匍匐茎长度、地上生物量、匍匐茎生物量、开花数、生殖生物量、有性繁殖效力及营养繁殖效力在放牧区显著高于不放牧的对照区。说明适当的放牧干扰有利于垂穗披碱草营养生长,但放牧过重会抑制其有性繁殖;由于放牧采食减少了种间竞争影响,从而提高了鹅绒委陵菜营养,生长效力和有性繁殖效力。两物种地下贮藏物的比例随着放牧强度增加显著减少。放牧强度对高寒草甸的群落演替方向有显著影响。  相似文献

Abstract Since 1990 under the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture over 100 small wetlands have been restored in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Wetlands were restored by means of dredging accumulated sediment from erosion to emulate pre‐disturbance conditions (i.e., open water and extended hydroperiod). In 1998 and 1999 we compared waterfowl pair and brood use on 22 restored and 24 reference wetlands. More pairs and broods of Ring‐necked Ducks, Gadwall, Green‐winged Teal, and American Black Ducks used restored versus reference wetlands. In restored wetlands waterfowl pair density and species richness were positively correlated with wetland/cattail area, percent cattail cover, and close proximity to freshwater rivers. In addition, a waterfowl reproductive index was positively correlated with percent cattail cover. Green‐winged Teal pair occurrence in restored wetlands was positively correlated with greater amounts of open water and water depths. American Black Duck pairs occurred on most (86%) restored wetlands. Restored small wetlands likely served as stopover points for American Black Duck broods during overland or stream movements, whereas they likely served as a final brood‐rearing destination for Green‐winged Teal broods. We suggest that wetland restoration is a good management tool for increasing populations of Green‐winged Teal and American Black Ducks in Prince Edward Island.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare the growth and short-term (single season) competitive performance of three species of Polygonum known to differ in flooding tolerance and life history. Polygonum amphibium is a perennial with low sexual reproductive effort and a relatively high degree of flooding tolerance, P. lapathifolium is an annual species with a high sexual reproductive effort and a low tolerance to flooding, and P. hydropiperoides is intermediate to the other two in terms of sexual reproductive effort and flooding tolerance. In order to determine the relative growth and competitive abilities of these species, mixtures and monocultures of plants were grown in pots and maintained under three flooding regimes: 1) flooded, 2) partially drained, and 3) well drained. Both P. hydropiperoides and P. amphibium grew best under flooded and partially drained conditions with reduced growth in the drained treatment. Polygonum lapathifolium, in contrast, grew as well in the drained treatment as in the more flooded treatments. Results from competition experiments were consistent in showing the relative competitive abilities to be P. lapathifolium > P. hydropiperoides > P. amphibium regardless of flooding regime. Thus, short-term competitive performance was found to trade off with flood tolerance rather than with sexual reproductive effort.  相似文献

The distribution of freshwater fish in creeks throughout the Brisbane region was determined by a survey carried out in 1977–78. Seventeen native and six exotic species were recorded in 55 creeks. Sixteen native and four exotic species were collected in a more restricted survey of central Brisbane in 1981. Urban development and the establishment of exotic plants have resulted in substantial changes to the aquatic environment in many of the creeks surveyed. Exotic grasses, especially para grass (Brachiaria mutica) have reduced the extent of free water by growing partly into stream channels. Floating exotic plants blanketed some stream reaches. Native aquatic macrophytes have declined, apparently due to dredging, siltation and other disturbances. These changes have affected the distribution and abundance of native and exotic fish. Native species with a preference for open water and beds of aquatic plants have declined in creeks overgrown by para grass and floating plants. Melanotaenia fluviatilis, Retropinna semoni, Pseudomugil signifer, Craterocephalus stercusmuscarum and Ambassis nigripinnis have been affected. Para grass and floating plants have not affected the range or abundance of Hypseleotris galii, H. compressus and Mogurnda adspersa. Gambusia affinis and Xiphophorus helleri have been advantaged by expansion of their preferred habitat type - the edges of pools where exotic grasses have grown partly into the water. The effect of exotic fish on native species is unclear. There was a correlation between large numbers of G. affinis and small numbers of H. galii and M. fluviatilis. Correlations could result from predatory or competitive interactions between species. Alternatively, correlations could be due entirely to the effects of habitat alterations on exotic and native species. However, H. galii was evidently not disadvantaged by the habitat alterations studied. Thus there may be a complex interaction between this species and G. affinis. There was no evidence that X. helleri had affected the range or abundance of native species.  相似文献

In the Vistula and Curonian lagoons, respectively, 7 and 9 taxa of under-ice zooplankton have been recorded. Copepoda and rotifera were dominant. Throughout the year, the complex of dominant species was generally constant in the Vistula Lagoon and changed considerably in the Curonian Lagoon. The zooplankton accumulation was found in the surface layer in the Curonian Lagoon, which was due to favorable oxygen conditions and phytoplankton accumulation under the ice.  相似文献

Synopsis The interaction of fluctuating water level and the Long Point topography is discussed with regard to the formation of lake-shore lagoons and their subsequent invasion by fishes. The species composition of fish communities in these lagoons was determined by 12 collections from lagoons (23 m2 to 25 ha) which yielded 33 fish species. The relationship of the number of fish species to lagoon area was lognormal; that is, with increasing lagoon area the number of species rose rapidly at first but soon decreased sharply, probably limited by the number of species capable of surviving in the habitat. The marked effect of area on species number in small lagoons is considered in the context of a hypothetical seasonal pattern of occasional invasion and continuous extinction.A sequence of reproductive guilds was found. In beach lagoons psammophils and lithophils were dominant. In a large vegetated lagoon in the interior phytophils and speleophils were dominant. This sequence was paralleled by an increase in the proportion of guarding and nesting species in the communities. The sequence was disrupted in the small interior lagoons where adaptations for survival were more important than reproductive strategy.  相似文献

Coastal lagoons are at risk internationally due to impacts associated with human-induced land use change. The resilience of aquatic macrophytes in these systems is threatened by altered hydrological regimes, elevated nutrient loading, and increased dominance of nuisance species. We describe the aquatic plant dynamics of the Waituna Lagoon Ramsar Site, a 1,350?ha lagoon frequently opened to the sea for flood mitigation which is characterised by fluctuating water levels and salinity. The shallow lagoon supports a macrophyte community dominated by Ruppia megacarpa and R. polycarpa. Repeated survey of 48 sites across the lagoon during late summer in 2009, 2010 and 2011 were applied to describe aquatic plant composition and abundance. This period coincided with three opening events (winter 2008; winter 2009; spring 2010) when the lagoon switched from a predominantly fresh-brackish system to being influenced by tidal exchange and lower water levels. The lagoon experienced a period of 43?days open to the sea in 2008?C2009, 67?days in 2009?C2010 and 181?days in 2010?C2011, during which macrophytes were subject to saline conditions in excess of 10?ppt. We observed a decline in the occurrence of Ruppia from 2009 (69?% sites) to 2011 (23?% sites). The shift in productivity was associated with the duration of the open phase and the period plants were subject to saline conditions >20?ppt and low water levels. The resilience of the system is also at risk from increased algal-dominance due to the intensification of agricultural land use occurring in the Waituna Lagoon catchment. While lagoon opening events cause extreme changes in water depth and salinity that can limit macrophyte growth, they also provide a mechanism to reduce the effects of eutrophication. Understanding these trade-offs is pivotal in management decisions regarding the likely impact of opening events on the ecological character of coastal lagoons.  相似文献

The cosmopolitan marine bivalve genus Lasaea is predominantly composed of highly polyploid asexual lineages with one exception: the diploid, sexual Australian species L. australis. Two undescribed, direct-developing congeners co-occur with the indirect-developing L. australis on the rocky intertidal of southeastern Australia. One of these, L. colmani sp. nov., is also diploid and sexual. The other direct-developing congener is an asexual polyploid composed of a variety of clonal lineages. All three sympatric Australian Lasaea congeners are morphologically distinguishable, although prodissoconch distinctions are required to separate large polyploid clams from equivalently-sized L. australis. Similarities in mitochondrial gene sequence and in shell morphology suggest that L. australis and the Australian sympatric polyploid clones share an exclusive common ancestor despite differing in developmental mode, ploidy and reproductive mode. However, detailed karyological analyses failed to identify a chromosome set morphologically similar to that of L. australis among the sympatric Australian polypoid complement. We propose that generation of the polyploid Australian clones (presumably by hybridization) was followed by radical karyological rearrangement.  相似文献

Four different management regimes were identified in small water bodies in Laos: open-access fisheries, both with and without stocking of exotics (mainly Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus ); community fisheries with restricted access and regular stocking; and fisheries rented out to corporate entities, based on indigenous stocks only. These regimes represent all possible combinations of the two management measures, access (open/restricted) and stocking of exotic species (no/yes) and a test fishing experiment assessed their effects on stock abundance, richness and diversity. The combination of access restrictions and stocking had a strong positive effect on total standing stocks. Stocks of indigenous fish were significantly increased by access restrictions, while stocking of exotics had no effect on indigenous standing stocks. Community fisheries targeted large sizes of exotic species while reducing the exploitation of smaller size groups, which accounted for much of the indigenous stocks. This suggests that stocking can promote active effort regulation and reduce the exploitation of natural stocks. Data on yields and effort were too limited to allow the use of inferential statistics, but indicated that community fisheries were exploited with much lower effort and gave lower yields than open access fisheries, while providing higher returns to fishing effort. This suggests that active management is effective in increasing standing stocks and the efficiency of exploitation, but does not necessarily increase yields unless optimal management regimes can be identified and implemented by the management institutions. No significant effects on wild stock richness or diversity were detected in the test fishing experiment, but wide confidence limits indicated a low statistical power of the test and therefore no definitive conclusions could be drawn.  相似文献

The present work describes the relationship between age and reproductive investment in the grass goby females in the Venice Lagoon. Age was estimated by otoliths reading, while reproductive investment was assessed by either the relative number of mature females across the breeding season and their gonadosomatic index. Females from different size/age classes differed in the timing and level of reproductive investment. The oldest females (3+ years old) appeared earlier in the spawning habitat, investing more at the beginning of the breeding season. In turn a later arrival in the spawning habitats has been observed for younger females (0+) and smaller individuals of 1+ and 2+ age classes. Present results gave evidence of an earlier age/size at sexual maturity of the grass goby in the Venice Lagoon compared to previous information on the species from the same lagoon and from other Mediterranean areas. Results were discussed in the light of previous data on reproductive strategy of nesting males and of the relationship between fishing pressure and life history traits in the Venice lagoon.  相似文献

Endozoochory by exotic mammalian herbivores could modify vegetation composition by facilitating the dispersal and establishment of exotic and native plant species. We examined the potential for endozoochoric dispersal of native and exotic plants by exotic hog deer (Axis porcinus) in south-eastern Australia. We quantified the germinable seed content of hog deer faecal pellets collected in five vegetation types within a 10,500-ha study area that was representative of their Australian range. Twenty exotic and 22 native species germinated from hog deer faecal pellets and significantly more native species germinated compared to exotic species. Seedlings of the encroaching native shrub Acacia longifolia var. sophorae emerged, but no native trees emerged and the percentage of grasses that germinated was low (11%). The species composition of germinants was similar among the five vegetation types. We estimated that the hog deer population in our study area could potentially disperse >130,000 viable seeds daily. Our study shows how an exotic mammal can disperse seeds from both native and invasive plants and highlights the need for endozoochory to be considered more widely in studies assessing the impacts of exotic mammals on plant communities.  相似文献

Fish, like other animals, choose environments for reproduction that are favorable for their offspring’s initial development. For example, these environments may be chosen to provide shelter and food. This study examined the fish larvae inhabiting the Ivinheima River sub-basin. The study aimed to (i) characterize the taxonomic composition of the larval fish fauna, (ii) analyze the structure of the larval assemblage, and (iii) verify the relationship between the larval assemblages and environmental variables. The sampling areas included three environments: the Ivinheima River, the Finado Raimundo Lagoon and the Patos Lagoon. Sampling was performed between October 2002 and March 2006 during four reproductive periods (RPs). The data were analyzed with correspondence analysis (CA) and canonical correlation analysis (CCA). A total of 120 619 larvae were collected. These larvae belonged to several species characterized by different reproductive strategies. Our results showed differences between the composition of the Ivinheima River’s assemblages, where there were more larvae of migratory fish, and the lagoons, where larvae of sedentary species were predominant. In addition, differences were found among the RPs evaluated in the Ivinheima River: the first and second RPs were characterized by milder floods and by a greater abundance of migratory piscivore larvae, whereas the third and fourth RPs had more outflow and a greater abundance of larvae of detritivore and omnivore species. We conclude that the Ivinheima River plays a significant role in the maintenance of native migratory fish stocks in the upper Paraná River basin and that the environment shows a segregation of the spatial and temporal composition and abundance of larvae related to running and flooding/standing water.  相似文献

The levels of Cu, Fe and Zn in water, sediment and Cynothrissa mento, a commercially important fish species, were investigated from April 2007 to March 2008 at three sites in Ologe Lagoon. Metal levels in the water column and C. mento were lower than the FAO/WHO drinking water and food safety limits. In most cases, metal concentrations were highest during the dry season and lowest in the wet season. Metal concentrations in sediment and C. mento varied significantly among the sampling stations, but in the water column only the levels of Fe and Zn differed significantly between stations. Concentrations of metals in C. mento were significantly affected by wet and dry seasons. The metal concentrations in Ologe Lagoon were lower than the values reported in some Nigerian water bodies. While the Ologe Lagoon system contains the heavy metals studied, their levels in the water, sediment and fish are still within acceptable limits.  相似文献

A benthic survey of the Lagoon of Albufeira on the western Atlantic coast of Portugal, based on macrofaunal analyses from 50 subtidal sampling stations has provided initial data for a study of the benthic ecology of that system. The 126 species identified revealed that the overall faunal composition is characteristic of both Atlantic and Mediterranean lagoons, with the greatest proportion of the species occurring at low frequencies.A correspondence analysis of the distribution of species among sampling stations identified two areas characterized by different communities. In the vicinity of the lagoon mouth a coarse, clean sand community was delineated from a mixed inner lagoon community associated with mixed sediments, ranging from coarse and medium sand with variable percentages of silt, to mud with up to 90% silt content. In deeper areas this lagoon community was considerably impoverished, a condition attributable to intermittent stagnation of the bottom water.A coenotic model of the Lagoon of Albufeira is proposed and related to the hydrodynamics of the system and to the distribution of the superficial sediments.  相似文献

We analyze the origin of knowledge about fish species richness in the Tuxpan-Tampamachoco estuarine system, in Veracuz, México. A complete inventory of the fish species known to date for this system (N = 179) was elaborated from published lists and from sampling seagrass meadows of Tampamachoco Lagoon, which yielded 14 previously unknown species. When compared, the different lists showed a low similarity that may reflect differences in sampling methods and collecting strategies. Current data suggest that fish species richness in Mexican coastal lagoons (Gulf of Mexico) is not related with lagoon surface area, as has been suggested, but with the number of inventories available for each lagoon, being these a reflection of the sampling effort. A sampling design for the assessment of fish species richness in estuarine systems should consider: a) using the highest possible variety of sampling fishing gears, b) collecting in all microhabitat types and c) the preference of bimonthly or quarterly samplings for two or more years over monthly samplings in a single year.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Mathematical functions developed in long‐term laboratory experiments at different constant temperatures were combined with daily water temperatures for 1991–93 in eight Austrian streams and rivers to simulate the complex life histories and reproductive capacities of two freshwater amphipods: Gammarus fossarum and G. roeseli. The functions describe brood development times, hatching success, times taken to reach sexual maturity, growth, and fecundity. The sex ratio was assumed to be 0.5 and an autumn–winter reproductive resting period was based on observations of six river populations. Simulations included summer‐cold mountain streams, summer‐warm lowland rivers, watercourses fed by groundwater or influenced by heated effluents, and varying amplitudes of change within each year. 2. A fortran 77 computer program calculated growth from birth to sexual maturity of first‐generation females born on the first day of each calendar month in 1991, and the numbers of offspring successfully released from the maternal broodpouch in successive broods. At the 1991–93 regimes of temperature, individual G. fossarum released 127–208 offspring and G. roeseli released 120–169 in seven or eight successive broods during life spans of less than 2 years in six rivers. Life spans extended into a third year in the relatively cool River Salzach (mean temperature 7.5 °C). They were not completed in the very cold River Steyr (mean 5.6, range 2.5–7.9 °C), where G. fossarum produced five broods (totalling 120 offspring) and G. roeseli only two broods (totalling 28 offspring) in the 3‐year period. Except in the Steyr, some offspring grew rapidly to maturity and produced several second‐generation broods during the simulation period; in the warmest rivers some third‐generation broods were also produced. Birth dates, early or late in the year, influenced the subsequent production of broods and young, depending on temperature regimes in particular rivers. Total numbers of offspring produced by the second and third generations represent the theoretical reproductive capacities of G. fossarum and G. roeseli. Minimum and maximum estimates mostly ranged from 100 to 17 300, were larger for G. fossarum except in the warmest river (March), where temperatures rose above 20 °C for 56–78 days in summer, and largest (maximum 37 600) in the River Voeckla heated by discharge from a power‐station (mean 11.5 °C). Results from the simulations agree with preliminary assessments of relative abundances for G. fossarum and G. roeseli in several of the study rivers, but in some one or both species appear to be absent. On a wider scale, the present study confirms that G. fossarum is potentially more successful than G. roeseli in cool rivers but indicates that neither species is likely to maintain viable populations in cold rivers strongly influenced by snow and ice‐melt. 3. The potential impacts of future river warming by increases of 1, 2 and 3 °C, due to climate change, vary according to river site, date of fertilisation, the extent of temperature increase, and the species of Gammarus. For Austrian rivers with mean temperatures in the range c. 7–10 °C, future warming would result in modest changes in the life histories and reproductive capacities of both G. fossarum and G. roeseli; the former would find improved temperature conditions in watercourses that are currently very cold throughout the year, and both would find warm rivers less tolerable. 4. The high potential reproductive capacity of gammarids, with rapid production of numerous successive broods when sexual maturity is finally achieved, indicates adaptation to high mortality during the relatively long period of growth to sexual maturity, and provides scope for an opportunistic strategy of emigration from centres of population abundance to colonise new territory when conditions are favourable. Rapid expansion of populations is desirable to combat the effects of environmental catastrophes, both frequent and short‐term floods and droughts, and more long‐term climatic changes that have occurred several times in glacial–interglacial periods during the current Ice Age.  相似文献
