Predation has profound effects on the phenotypes of animal prey and, in lizards, the relationship between coloration and antipredatory behaviour has been studied in depth. However, studies that address the relationships between dorsal patterns and tail coloration with escape behaviour in polymorphic lizards are absent in the literature. We describe dorsal morphs and measured tail coloration and escape behaviour in hatchling Iberian wall lizards, Podarcis hispanicus, a species with a previously undescribed female‐restricted dorsal polymorphism (reticulated‐blotched males, and either striped or reticulated‐blotched females) and juvenile tails with conspicuous blue coloration, which is probably used to divert predator attacks towards the autotomizable tail. Overall we provide evidence for the existence of sexual dimorphism in tail ultraviolet reflectance between reticulated females and males, with striped females being intermediate. We identified sex/dorsal morph, body size and tail brightness as predictors of different aspects of escape behaviour and suggest the existence of two alternative escape strategies between striped and reticulated‐blotched females that may be dependent on dorsal morph differences, independently of sex. Reticulated‐blotched females, and also males (all reticulated‐blotched), ran faster and spent less time paused than striped females, which might reflect an escape behaviour strategy based on endurance in striped females. In addition, lowland males displayed tail waving as a ‘last resort’ antipredator strategy that may be related to fatigue. We concluded that hatchling antipredatory behaviour is influenced by both dorsal pattern and tail conspicuousness. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 113 , 1094–1106.  相似文献

Mutant gene frequencies in cats of the greater London area   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary The frequencies of seven mutant genes of the domestic cat have been estimated by sampling the population of greater London, specific areas of the capital and adjoining counties. An attempt was made to diversify the method of sampling by concentrating upon certain categories of cats. In addition to the usual sightings of cats in streets and open spaces, surveys were made of cats attending a veterinary clinic, those staying at a boarding cattery, those exhibited in the household pet classes at a cat show and those in rescue centres. Although there are inconsistencies, the general impression from frequencies in present and earlier observations is that the lighter phenotypes (mackerel tabby, blue dilution and orange) are favoured by human preference, as opposed to the darker phenotypes (blotched tabby, black and non-orange). Reasons are discussed for thinking that, while human preference may be a factor in the evolution of the feline polymorphism, it is not the fundamental cause.  相似文献

Mutant gene frequencies in cats of Cyprus   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Summary Three areas of the island of Cyprus have been sampled for frequency of nine mutant genes among the domestic cat population. The significance of the observed frequencies are discussed with particular reference to the existence of world-wide clines for O (orange) and t b (blotched tabby). The frequencies for Cyprus seems to be intermediate to those reported for European and Asian populations and could be part of the proposed East-West cline for the two genes.  相似文献

The occurrence of striped colour patterns and of striped/non-striped polymorphism systems among snakes is reviewed from literature data augmented by some personal observations. Among 1367 species, 190 were striped or had striped morphs. Of 11 families, the striped pattern was common mainly among Colubridae, presumably in relation to the active escape behaviour strategy, prevalent in this family. The striped species tended to cluster in a small number of genera. The 40 striped/non-striped polymorphism systems found, fall into five categories, according to the coloration patterns of the alternative morphs: (I) blotched (cryptic); (2) barred (or ringed); (3) plain; (4) melanistic; (5) albinistic. Most polymorphisms are presumably maintained by eco-behavioural trade-offs, depending on the category and on the habitat: The striped morph is presumed more effective in active escape and sometimes also in camouflage; the alternative morph may be more effective in camouflage, in active escape or in thermoregulation. Hence morph frequency depends on the habitat. Striped-albinistic polymorphism in Elaphe climacophora presumably depends on human protection of the albino morph.  相似文献

To determine mutant allele frequencies, surveys of coat phenotypes of the domestic cat (Felis catus L.) were conducted from October 1982 to June 1985 in 23 urban and rural populations of Poland (N = 67-278). The seven gene loci studied included: sex-linked orange (O), agouti (A), tabby (T), full-color expression (D), long hair (L), piebald spotting (S), and dominant white (W). The mutant allele frequencies at these loci are: p(O) = 0-0.139, q(a) = 0.487-0.774, p(Ta) = 0, q(tb) = 0.132-0.451, q(d) = 0-0.332, q(l) = 0-0.220, p(S) = 0.242-0.620, and p(W) = 0. The coefficients of darkness estimated ranged from 0.51 to 0.75, showing no statistically significant differences between urban and rural populations. Of the gene loci studied, only A and S show such differences, with the incidence of alleles a and S being, respectively, significantly higher and lower for urban areas. The relatively great amount of genetic heterogeneity in the cat populations of Poland seems to reflect historical determinants. The Polish data are compared to those from Europe, northern Africa, and western Asia, and geographic patterns in distribution for all of the mutant alleles studied are described.  相似文献

Sex‐specific colour polymorphisms have been extensively documented in many different taxa. When polymorphism in colour pattern is restricted to females, the condition is known as female‐limited pattern polymorphism (FPP), which has been less commonly addressed in vertebrates. FPP is present in several lizard species, although most research on lizards has focused on carotenoid‐ and pteridine‐based coloration and not on melanin‐based polymorphisms. In the present study, we focus on Iberian wall lizards, Podarcis hispanicus, where two female melanin‐based dorsal patterns can be clearly distinguished: striped and reticulated‐blotched. We indirectly tested the hypothesis that selection acts differentially among P. hispanicus female morphs to create alternative morph‐specific phenotypic optima at different levels by investigating whether morphs differ in fitness proxies. We specifically examined whether the two female dorsal pattern morphs differed in adult morphology, dorsal coloration, immune response, reproductive investment, and growth. We did not find a relationship between melanin‐based coloration and hatchling growth and immune response, despite a correlation between these traits possibly being expected as a result of pleiotropy in the melanocortin system. However, our results show that female dorsal morphs in P. hispanicus differ in terms of adult morphology, dorsal coloration, and reproductive investment. Reticulated‐blotched P. hispanicus females had deeper heads and longer femora, less melanin, and more brownish coloration, and also had larger and heavier hatchlings than striped females.  相似文献

The Tabby markings of the domestic cat are unique coat patterns for which no causative candidate gene has been inferred from other mammals. In this study, a genome scan was performed on a large pedigree of cats that segregated for Tabby coat markings, specifically for the Abyssinian (Ta-) and blotched (tbtb) phenotypes. There was linkage between the Tabby locus and eight markers on cat chromosome B1. The most significant linkage was between marker FCA700 and Tabby (Z = 7.56, theta = 0.03). Two additional markers in the region supported linkage, although not with significant LOD scores. Pairwise analysis of the markers supported the published genetic map of the cat, although additional meioses are required to refine the region. The linked markers cover a 17-cM region and flank an evolutionary breakpoint, suggesting that the Tabby gene has a homologue on either human chromosome 4 or 8. Alternatively, Tabby could be a unique locus in cats.  相似文献

A survey was carried out of mutant allele frequencies at seven loci in the domestic cats of Bordeaux and rural areas between 50 and 140 km distant. The results support the suggestion of Pontier (1983) that urban rural clines are apparent at the orange locus, but not for non-agouti or blotched tabby. A triple centroid curve smoothing technique was carried out on all the French populations surveyed so far. This is an attempt to reduce genetic and statistical noise and take account of standard errors of gene frequency estimates. The cline maps of Todd (1977), which included only ten French populations are thereby substantially supported by subsequently obtained data. There appears to be a striking affinity between the cats of Bordeaux and those of St. Pierre et Miquelon. This is the first demonstration of a connection between the cats of French Canada and those of mainland France. The origin of the cat populations of the main areas of French settlement in the St. Lawrence River valley remains unexplained.  相似文献

To support detailed genetic analysis of striped bass (Morone saxatilis) and white bass (Morone chrysops), we isolated 153 microsatellite loci from repeat‐enriched striped bass DNA libraries. Of these, 147 markers amplified in striped bass (average 4.7 alleles per locus) and 133 in white bass (average 2.2 alleles per locus). One hundred twenty‐two markers amplified in their hybrid. Development of new microsatellite markers will facilitate evaluations of genetic structure in wild populations and will support pedigree analysis and linkage mapping for selective breeding.  相似文献

Three domestic cat populations from Yugoslavia (Bitola, Ohrid, Struga) were surveyed at six colour loci (orange, non agouti, tabby, dilute, piebald spotting, dominant white) and one coat length locus (long hair, allele l). Statistically significant differences were obtained in frequencies of alleles: O, a, l and W. Human preferences and cultural contacts with other countries especially Turkey are discussed in the paper. Genetic distance analysis did not show that Macedonian populations are more similar to Turkish or Greek ones than populations from Dalmatia, where Turkish influence was absent, although there are similarities between Macedonian and Turkish populations as far as the O allele is concerned. There was a statistically significant correlation between the duration of Turkish rule in the middle and eastern part of the Mediterranean and O and l alleles frequencies.  相似文献

We report for the first time, and for the whole of sub-Saharan Africa, the geographical distribution and the frequency of an indicine and a taurine Y specific allele amongst African cattle breeds. A total of 984 males from 69 indigenous African populations from 22 countries were analysed at the microsatellite locus INRA 124. The taurine allele is probably the oldest one on the continent. However, the taurine and the indicine alleles were present in 291 males (30%), and 693 males (70%), respectively. More particularly, 96% of zebu males (n = 470), 50% of taurine males (n = 263), 29% of sanga males (crossbreed Bos taurus x Bos indicus, n = 263) and 95% of zebu x sanga crossbred males (n = 56) had the indicine allele. The Borgou, a breed classified as zebu x taurine cross showed only the zebu allele (n = 12). The indicine allele dominates today in the Abyssinian region, a large part of the Lake Victoria region and the sahelian belt of West Africa. All the sanga males (n = 64) but only one from the Abyssinian region had the indicine allele. The taurine allele is the commonest only among the sanga breeds of the southern African region and the trypanotolerant taurine breeds of West Africa. In West Africa and in the southern Africa regions, zones of introgression were detected with breeds showing both Y chromosome alleles. Our data also reveal a pattern of male zebu introgression in Mozambique and Zimbabwe, probably originating from the Mozambique coast. The sanga cattle from the Lake Victoria region and the Kuri cattle of Lake Chad, cattle populations surrounded by zebu breeds were, surprisingly, completely devoid of the indicine allele. Human migration, phenotypic preferences by the pastoralists, adaptation to specific habitats and to specific diseases are the main factors explaining the present-day distribution of the alleles in sub-Saharan Africa.  相似文献

The vit gene maps to the mi (microphthalmia) locus of the laboratory mouse.   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The murine model for human vitiligo (the vit/vit mouse) develops progressive depigmentation of the pelage, skin, and eyes. The vit gene is inherited as an autosomal recessive. We have used classical breeding and isozyme marker analysis to map this vit gene that produces a vitiligo-like condition in the mouse. Crossbreeding the C57BL/6J-vit/vit mice with C57BL/6J mice carrying the Miwh and/or miws alleles at the microphthalmia locus resulted in mutant phenotypes, demonstrating absence of complementation. When vit is heterozygous with the Miwh allele, a "blotched" pigment pattern results. When it is heterozygous with the miws allele, a novel expression of the vitiliginous phenotype results. Further mating analysis of these crossbred populations demonstrates allelic inheritance between vit and the alleles at the microphthalmia locus. Other breeding studies using alleles at the agouti, belted, brown, dominant spotting, extension, mahogany, patch, and piebald loci did not demonstrate pigmentation explainable by allelic inheritance with the vit gene. Also, vit was tested for linkage with isozyme markers located on chromosomes 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, and 11, and results were negative. Therefore, the vit (vitiligo) gene of the laboratory mouse has been mapped to the mi (microphthalmia) locus on chromosome 6. The gene properly should be designated as mivit.  相似文献

Genetic variation has been difficult to detect in striped bass (Morone saxatilis). Therefore, we identified and characterized 13 microsatellite loci to provide additional genetic markers for striped bass. Microsatellites were identified by screening a striped bass genomic library or by using primers developed for European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) microsatellite loci. We found that 6 of the 13 microsatellite loci were polymorphic in DNA samples obtained from wild populations of striped bass. The number of alleles per locus varied from 3 to 12, and the observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.55 to 0.78. These results indicate that microsatellite loci provide more alleles and higher heterozygosities than other genetic markers developed for striped bass. The murine model for Turner Syndrome is the XO mouse. Unlike their human counterparts, XO mice are typically fertile, and their lack of a second sex chromosome can be transmitted from one generation to the next as an X-linked dominant trait with male lethality. The introduction of an X-linked coat-color marker (tabby) has greatly facilitated the maintenance of this useful mouse strain. XO mice can be produced in large numbers, generation after generation, and rapidly identified on the basis of their sex and coat color. Although this breeding scheme appears to be effective at the phenotype level, its utility has never been conclusively proved at the molecular or cytogenetic levels. Here, we clone and sequence the tabby deletion break point and present a multiplex polymerase chain reaction-based assay for the tabby mutation. By combining the results of this assay with whole-chromosome painting data, we demonstrate that genotype, phenotype, and karyotype all show perfect correlation in the publicly available XO breeding stock. This work lays the foundation for the use of this strain to study Turner Syndrome in particular and the X chromosome in general.  相似文献

The site of action of the sex-linked tabby (Ta) locus was analyzed by the technique of dermal-epidermal recombination grafting. Skin components from normal and tabby 14-day embryos were separated, recombined and grown 21 days in testes of histocompatible mice. Grafts of the combinations normal epidermis-normal dermis and normal epidermis-tabby dermis produced predominantly zig-zag hairs. Grafts of the combination tabby epidermis-normal dermis and tabby epidermis-tabby dermis produced hairs with a morphology similar to hairs found in tabby mice. We conclude from these results that the tabby locus acts within the epidermis, and has no effect on the dermis.  相似文献

Inheritance of epidermis pigmentation in the pericarp of sunflower seeds was studied. Inheritance of pigmentation was confirmed by three alleles Ew (epidermis devoid of pigmentation), Estr (epidermal pigmentation in strips), and Edg (solid pigmentation). Dominance of the lack of epidermis pigmentation over striped epidermis and striped epidermis over solid pigmentation was established. It was shown that the striped epidermis pigmentation and the presence of a testa layer are controlled by two genes, whose expression is independent from each other. Yellowish hypodermis was discovered in the sample I2K2218, which is monogenically dominantly inherited.  相似文献

Aposematic signal variation is a paradox: predators are better at learning and retaining the association between conspicuousness and unprofitability when signal variation is low. Movement patterns and variable colour patterns are linked in non-aposematic species: striped patterns generate illusions of altered speed and direction when moving linearly, affecting predators'' tracking ability; blotched patterns benefit instead from unpredictable pauses and random movement. We tested whether the extensive colour-pattern variation in an aposematic frog is linked to movement, and found that individuals moving directionally and faster have more elongated patterns than individuals moving randomly and slowly. This may help explain the paradox of polymorphic aposematism: variable warning signals may reduce protection, but predator defence might still be effective if specific behaviours are tuned to specific signals. The interacting effects of behavioural and morphological traits may be a key to the evolution of warning signals.  相似文献

Differences in snake color pattern have been demonstrated to affect behaviors involved in antipredator defense. Snakes with blotched or banded color patterns are concealed when not moving, and tend to rely on concealment and aggression for defense. In contrast, snakes with uniform or striped color patterns are easily seen when stationary, but their speed and direction are difficult to track when moving. They tend to rely on flight for protection. Some snake taxa exhibit ontogenetic change in color pattern, but the behavioral consequences of this change have not been investigated. I present results of a behavioral study in the racer, Coluber constrictor, which has a blotched juvenile color pattern but is uniformly colored as an adult. Hatchling racers were significantly more likely than adults to show aggressive behavior when confronted with a model predator, whereas adults were more likely to flee. This supports the hypothesis that changes in behavior and color pattern are correlated in this species to provide effective antipredator defense at different stages of life history. I also examined sprint speed, which may be an important factor in antipredator defense. Juvenile and adult racers showed a similar relationship between length and speed, a pattern also seen in other species that lack color change. This result suggests that sprint speed is not a causal factor in the evolution of ontogenetic color change.  相似文献
