A unified index to measure ecological diversity and species rarity   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Several indices have been created to measure diversity, and the most frequently used are the Shannon-Wiener (H) and Simpson (D) indices along with the number of species (S) and evenness (E). Controversies about which index should be used are common in literature. However, a generalized entropy (Tsallis entropy) has the potential to solve part of these problems. Here we explore a family of diversity indices (Sq; where q is the Tsallis index) and evenness (Eq), based on Tsallis entropy that incorporates the most used indices. It approaches S when q=0, H when q→1 and gives D when q=2. In general, varying the value of the Tsallis index (q), Sq varies from emphasis on species richness (q<1) to emphasis on dominance (q>1). Similarly, Eq also works as a tool to investigate diversity. In particular, for a given community, its minimum value represents the maximum deviation from homogeneity (Eq=1) for a particular q (herein named q*). It is remarkable that our analysis indicates that q* and its corresponding evenness, Eq*, are negatively affected by S when using simulated data. They may represent an index related to species rarity. Furthermore, Sq* (i.e. the value of Sq for a specific q*) is positively affected by richness that is an important property of any diversity index. In general, our findings indicate that the indices H, D, S, Sq*, E and Eq* are only part of a whole set of possibilities. In addition, the ecological properties of Eq* and Sq*, proposed here for the first time, show promise in ecology.  相似文献

Island archipelagos and insect-plant associations have both independently provided many useful systems for evolutionary study. The arytainine psyllid (Sternorrhyncha: Hemiptera) radiation on broom (Fabaceae: Genisteae) in the Canary Island archipelago provides a discrete system for examining the speciation of highly host-specific phytophagous insects in an island context. Phylogenetic reconstructions based on three datasets (adult and nymph morphological characters, and two mitochondrial DNA regions: part of the small subunit rRNA, and part of cytochrome oxidase I, cytochrome oxidase II and the intervening tRNA leucine) are generally consistent. The combined molecular tree provides a well-supported estimate of psyllid relationships and shows that there have been several colonizations of the Macaronesian islands but that only one has resulted in a significant radiation. Psyllid diversification has apparently been constrained by the presence of suitable host groups within the genistoid legumes, and the diversity, distribution, and abundance of those groups. The phylogeny, by indicating pairs of sister species, allows putative mechanisms of speciation to be assessed. The most common conditions associated with psyllid speciation are geographical allopatry with a host switch to closely related hosts (six examples), or geographical allopatry on the same host (four examples). Where allopatric speciation involves a host switch, these have all been to related hosts. There is some evidence that switches between unrelated host plants may be more likely in sympatry. Only one sister pair (Aryrtainilla cytisi and A. telonicola) and the putative host races of Arytinnis modica are sympatric but on unrelated hosts, which may be a necessary condition for sympatric speciation in these insects. Where several psyllids share the same host, resources appear to be partitioned by ecological specialization and differing psyllid phenology.  相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity in host-plant specialisation in Aphis fabae   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract.  1. The study of phenotypic plasticity in host utilisation is crucial for predicting evolutionary patterns of insect – plant interactions. The presence of sufficient variation in plasticity may facilitate host race formation and sympatric speciation.
2.  Aphis fabae genotypes showed high levels of phenotypic plasticity in the intrinsic rate of natural increase ( r m), relative growth rate (RGR), birth weight (BW), adult weight (AW), fecundity ( F ), and development time (1/ d ).
3. Thirteen A. fabae genotypes reared both on broad bean and nasturtium exhibited statistically significant genotypic variability in phenotypic plasticity.
4. Some genotypes displayed fitness improvement on novel host plants.
5. Differences in genotypic correlation among fitness components between the two hosts and increased variance on nasturtium indicated different genomic expression on nasturtium.
6. The results indicated that phenotypic plasticity in a novel environment may be a major determinant of the evolutionary trajectory of a parasitic species and might support the idea that speciation starts with phenotypic plasticity.  相似文献

Abstract: Hanabusaya asiatica (Nakai) Nakai (Campanulaceae), a bee- pollinated, perennial herb, is restricted to the mountainous regions of the eastern-central Korean peninsula. Allozyme analyses for 348 individuals assessed the levels of genetic diversity for five populations. Spatial autocorrelation statistics were also used to examine the spatial distribution of allozyme polymorphisms. The species maintains high levels of allozyme diversity ( H eS = 0.217) and it exhibits low allozyme differentiation among populations ( G ST = 0.132) compared with other endemics (mean H e = 0.096, G ST = 0.248). There is an apparent pattern of isolation by distance among populations. These results suggest that H. asiatica is at a genetic equilibrium. A considerable deficit in numbers of heterozygotes suggests mating among relatives in populations. At least three populations of H. asiatica should be sampled or conserved to capture or maintain > 99 % of the genetic diversity in the species as a whole. Within local populations, individuals are distributed in a structured, isolation by distance, manner. Approximate genetic patch width in the populations of H. asiatica examined is 5 - 8 m. For conservation purposes, it is suggested that, in general, the sampling of H. asiatica should be conducted at intervals in order to efficiently sample the genetic diversity across an entire population.  相似文献

The chromosomes of Australotettix montanus Richards and A. carraiensis Richards have been studied. Both species share the following characteristics: the chromosome number is 2n=45 ♂-46 ♀ the sex mechanism is of the XO ♂-XX ♀ type with the X submetacentric; the X chromosome as well as two bivalents (H1 and H2) are heterochromatic during first prophase.
The species differ in: (a) the pattern of distribution of heterochromatic blocks in H1; (b) the H1 pair consists of two metacentric autosomes in A. carraiensis while these chromosomes are acrocentric in A. montanus ; (c) a medium-sized pair of autosomes is formed by subacrocentric elements in A. carraiensis while they are acrocentric in A. montanus.
The karyotypes of both species do not differ basically from that which is typical for the Macropathinae.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The literature contains a number of curves relating time (days) required for median hatch (=D2) to water temperature (T,°C) for the eggs of several salmonid fishes. There are relatively few data on the relationships between time to median eyed (= D1), days) or time to median swim-up (= D3, days) and temperature.
2. From published data, over most of the range 0-9.5°C, approximate relationships are D,=0.5D2 for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) and D3 = 1.7D2 for eight species of Salmo and Oncorhynchus.
3. Field and hatchery tests suggest that these are useful empirical models for approximate prediction of D1 and D3 from D2 for most salmonids.  相似文献

We investigated two hypotheses for the origin of the root rot fungus Heterobasidion annosum species complex: (i) that geology has been an important factor for the speciation (ii) that co-evolutionary processes with the hosts drove the divergence of the pathogen species. The H. annosum species complex consists of five species: three occur in Europe, H. annosum s.s., Heterobasidion parviporum and Heterobasidion abietinum, and two in North America, Heterobasidion irregulare and Heterobasidion occidentale; all with different but partially overlapping host preferences. The evolution of the H. annosum species complex was studied using six partially sequenced genes, between 10 and 30 individuals of each species were analysed. Neighbour-joining trees were constructed for each gene, and a Bayesian tree was built for the combined data set. In addition, haplotype networks were constructed to illustrate the species relationships. For three of the genes, H. parviporum and H. abietinum share haplotypes supporting recent divergence and/or possible gene flow. We propose that the H. annosum species complex originated in Laurasia and that the H. annosum s.s./H. irregulare and H. parviporum/H. abietinum/H. occidentale ancestral species emerged between 45 and 60 Ma in the Palaearctic, well after the radiation of the host genera. Our data imply that H. irregulare and H. occidentale were colonizing North America via different routes. In conclusion, plate tectonics are likely to have been the main factor influencing Heterobasidion speciation and biogeography.  相似文献

Microsatellite DNA markers were applied for the first time in a population genetic study of a cephalopod and compared with previous estimates of genetic differentiation obtained using allozyme and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) markers. Levels of genetic variation detected with microsatellites were much higher than found with previous markers (mean number of alleles per locus=10.6, mean expected heterozygosity ( H E)=0.79; allozyme H E=0.08; mtDNA restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) H E=0.16). In agreement with previous studies, microsatellites demonstrated genetic uniformity across the population occupying the European shelf seas of the North East Atlantic, and extreme genetic differentiation of the Azores population ( R ST/ F ST=0.252/0.245; allozyme F ST=0.536; mtDNA F ST=0.789). In contrast to other markers, microsatellites detected more subtle, and significant, levels of differentiation between the populations of the North East Atlantic offshore banks (Rockall and Faroes) and the shelf population ( R ST=0.048 and 0.057). Breakdown of extensive gene flow among these populations is indicated, with hydrographic (water depth) and hydrodynamic (isolating current regimes) factors suggested as possible barriers to migration. The demonstration of genetic subdivision in an abundant, highly mobile marine invertebrate has implications for the interpretation of dispersal and population dynamics, and consequent management, of such a commercially exploited species. Relative levels of differentiation indicated by the three different marker systems, and the use of measures of differentiation (assuming different mutation models), are discussed.  相似文献

In six Caribbean wrasse (Labridae) species: Halichoeres bivittatus , Halichoeres garnoti , Halichoeres maculipinna , Halichoeres poeyi , Halichoeres radiatus and Thalassoma bifasciatum , home range area ( A HR) was positively correlated with fish total length ( L T) and this relationship was not significantly different among H. bivittatus , H. garnoti , H. radiatus and T. bifasciatum . The data for three of these species ( H. radiatus was excluded because only juveniles were investigated) were pooled and the relationship between L T and A HR was analysed for juveniles and initial phase (IP) adults separately. This analysis found that once individuals of these two species become IP adults, the A HR reached a plateau, despite continued fish growth. In a separate analysis including all six wrasse species, after accounting for differences in L T using ANOVA, it was found that IP adults required larger areas than juveniles, and terminal phase (TP) adults required larger A HR than IP adults. Upon analysis of the distribution of activity throughout A HR for all species studied, it was found that 50% of the observation points (defined as the activity centre) were found in 13 to 24% of the A HR.  相似文献

Abstract Dioscorea tokoro Makino is a herbaceous climber species widespread in East Asia. Genetic structure of a natural population of D. tokoro was examined employing starch gel electrophoresis of allozymes. Genotypes of seven loci were studied for 1,128 individuals. Twenty-six populations located mainly in the Kinki district of Japan were subgrouped into four large clusters by the geographical distribution of alleles. The D. tokoro population was revealed to contain greater total genetic diversity ( HT =0.282) and higher intrapopulational genetic diversity ( HS =0.258) than other outcrossing species for which data are available. On the other hand, interpopulational differentiation ( GST =0.096) was smaller than in other outcrossers. For the heterozygosity deficiency observed ( FIT =0.125), population subdivision ( FST =0.096) and inbreeding within the population ( FIS =0.067) were revealed to contribute to the same extent. From these F -statistics, the migration rate among subpopulations and the rate of between-relative matings were estimated. Overall results on the genetic structure of the D. tokoro population indicated a high gene flow among its subpopulations, and this may be the consequence of its life form as a climber and its habitat in a disturbed environment. During the study, the geographical cline of Pgi allele frequencies was observed. This finding was supposed to be the result of the selection imposed on Pgi by the temperature differences between localities.  相似文献

In future elevated CO2 environments, chewing insects are likely to perform less well than at present because of the effects of increased carbon fixation on their host plants. When the aphid, Aulacorthum solani was reared on bean ( Vicia faba ) and tansy ( Tanacetum vulgare ) plants under ambient and elevated CO2, performance was enhanced on both hosts at elevated CO2. The nature of the response was different on each plant species suggesting that feeding strategy may influence an insect's response to elevated CO2. On bean, the daily rate of production of nymphs was increased by 16% but there was no difference in development time, whereas on tansy, development time was 10% shorter at elevated CO2 but the rate of production of nymphs was not affected. The same aphid clone therefore responded differently to elevated CO2 on different host plants. This increase in aphid performance could lead to larger populations of aphids in a future elevated CO2 environment.  相似文献

Three tilapiine species belonging to the endemic Lake Malawi species flock known as' chambo' Oreochromis ( Nyasalapia ) karongae , O. (N.) lidole and O. (N.) squamipinnis and the species Oreochromis (Oreochromis) shiranus were collected from the wild. These four species were analysed at 43 enzyme loci using starch gel electrophoresis. No significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were observed after correcting for multiple simultaneous testing. The expected heterozygosity ( H e) was lowest in O. (O.) shiranus ( H e=0.082). The three chambo species had higher levels: H e=0.103 to H e=0.116. The three chambo species as a whole were polymorphic (99%) at 16 different loci sharing 10 of these in common. No fixed differences between the three chambo species were observed but highly significant allele frequency differences existed between all the chambo species. The F ST calculated for the three chambo species was 0051, closer to intra-specific than to inter-specific levels. O. (O.) shiranus could be clearly separated from all chambo species at five fixed loci. Comparison of the allozyme data from these species with five species from the same sub genera support the hypothesis that the chambo form a monophyletic group and that O. (N.) macrochir or a related species represents the sister taxon.  相似文献

Parasite-host cospeciation has received much attention as an important mechanism in the diversification of phytophagous insects. However, studies have shown that for certain taxa, it is not host fidelity but host-switching that plays the critical role in speciation. Cinara are aphids (Insecta: Hemiptera: Aphididae: Lachninae) that feed exclusively on the woody parts of conifers of the Cupressaceae and Pinaceae. They are unusual aphids because most Pinaceae play host to several species of Cinara. The aphids show relatively strong host fidelity, and as a consequence historically have been treated based on the taxonomy of their hosts. The historical paradigm of aphid evolution implies that Cinara species have radiated to different parts of the same host species and/or speciated with their host. Using mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 and nuclear elongation factor 1-alpha DNA sequences, we performed molecular phylogenetic analysis of Cinara species, concentrating on those associated with pinyon pines in the southwestern USA. We determined that switching hosts has played a key role in the speciation of the genus, reflected in the polyphyly of pinyon-feeding Cinara. Furthermore, species sharing a common feeding site on different hosts were more closely related to each other than to those sharing the same host but at different feeding sites, suggesting that feeding site fidelity plays a more important role in speciation than does host fidelity in general. This study also elucidated the primary taxonomy of various species: it suggested that Cinara rustica Hottes is a junior synonym of C. edulis (Wilson) and that C. wahtolca Hottes represents two species on the two different pinyon pine species, Pinus edulis Englem. and P. monophylla Torr. & Frem.  相似文献

Power relations were used for 297 parasite communities of fish, bird and mammal hosts between the number of genera (G) and the number of species (S) per community to test for the relative importance of different processes in their diversification. For the bird hosts the relation was G∝S0.92, and for fish hosts it was G∝S0.97, but for mammal hosts, the number of parasite genera increases more slowly as a function of species richness (G∝S0.83), suggesting, among other possibilities, a higher rate of within-host parasite speciation in mammals than in other vertebrates.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in the energy density of fishes in the North Sea   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The energy density ( E D, kJ g-1 wet mass) of saithe Pollachius virens , haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus , whiting Merlangius merlangus , Norway pout Trisopterus esmarki , herring Clupea harengus , sprat Sprattus sprattus , sandeel Ammodytes marinus and pearlsides Maurolicus Muelleri , from the North Sea, increased with total length, L T. However, there was not always a significant ( P> 0·05) linear relationship between L T and E D. Seasonal differences in E D were obvious in mature fish, while geographical differences were insignificant. For all species there was a highly significant correlation ( P< 0·0001) between the percent dry mass of the fish ( D S) and E D. A general relationship was established for gadoids and sandeel E D=–3·1492+0·3459 D S and herring E D=–4·6395+0·4170 D S. Thus seasonal and size-specific data on E D needed for bioenergetics and gastric evacuation models can be determined simply from D S, which is considerably less costly and time consuming than calorimetry or proximate analysis.  相似文献

Abstract 1. The evolution of reproductive isolation between recently diverged or incipient species is a critical component of speciation and a major focus of speciation models. In phytophagous insects, host plant fidelity (the habit of mating and ovipositing on a single host species) can contribute to assortative mating and reproductive isolation between populations adapting to alternative hosts. The potential role of host plant fidelity in the evolution of reproductive isolation was examined in a pair of North American blue butterfly species, Lycaeides idas and L. melissa .
2. These species are morphologically distinct and populations of each species utilise different host plants; however they share 410 bp haplotypes of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, indicating recent divergence.
3. Some populations using native hosts exhibited strong fidelity for their natal host plant over the hosts used by nearby populations. Because these butterflies mate on or near the host plant, the development of strong host fidelity may create reproductive isolation among populations on different hosts and restrict gene flow.
4. Tests of population differentiation using allozyme allele frequency data did not provide convincing evidence of restricted gene flow among populations. Based on morphological differences, observed ecological specialisation, and the sharing of genetic markers, these butterflies appear to be undergoing adaptive radiation driven at least partially by host shifts. Neutral genetic markers may fail to detect the effects of very recent host shifts in these populations due to gene flow and/or the recency of divergence and shared ancestral polymorphism.  相似文献

Theories of the differentiation of ecological communities on landscapes have typically not considered evolutionary dynamics. Here we analytically study the expected differentiation among local communities in a large metacommunity, undergoing speciation, ecological drift and intercommunity dispersal, in the context of neutral theory. We demonstrate that heterogeneity in species diversity and abundance arises among communities when local communities are small and intercommunity migration is infrequent. We propose a new measure to describe community differentiation, defined as the average correlation or the average probability (Cst) that two randomly sampled individuals of the same species within local communities are from the same ancestor. The effects of driving forces (migration, mutation, and ecological drift) are incorporated into the two-level hierarchical community structure in a finite island model of neutral communities. Community differentiation can increase the effective metacommunity size or the Hubbell's fundamental species diversity in the metacommunity by a factor (1−Cst)−1. Significant community differentiation arises when Cst≠0. Intercommunity migration promotes species diversity in local communities but reduce species diversity in the metacommunity. In either the finite or infinite island case, one can estimate the number of intercommunity migrants by using multiple local community datasets when the speciation is negligible in the neutral local communities, or by using the metacommunity dataset when the speciation is included in the local neutral communities. These results highlight the significance of the evolutionary mechanisms in generating heterogeneous communities in the absence of complicated ecological processes on large landscapes.  相似文献

Sennertia mites live as inquilines in the nests of carpenter bees and disperse as deutonymphs on newly emerged adult bees. Because their life cycle is tightly linked to that of the host bees, Sennertia may diverge in response to speciation in the hosts. However, the majority of Sennertia species are associated with several closely related carpenter bees, suggesting that host speciation may not be reflected in mite genetic structure. Here we investigate the extent of host-associated genetic differentiation in two Sennertia mites (S. alfkeni and S. japonica) that share four closely related, strictly allopatric large carpenter bees (Xylocopa). Analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene in Sennertia unexpectedly indicates that the two species represent morphological variants of a single species, and they collectively group into four distinct, allopatric clades that are uniquely associated with a single Xylocopa host. An exception is the mites associated with X. amamensis of the northernmost populations, which have genotypes typical of those associated with neighboring X. appendiculatacircumvolans. Additional analysis using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) further corroborates the presence of four mite clades but contrary to the COI data, suggests that the mites of the southernmost population of X. appendiculatacircumvolans have genetic profiles typical of those associated with X. amamensis. These results indicate that some mites have undergone secondary host switch after the formation of the four mite lineages and further experienced mitochondrial introgression during period of lineage coexistence. Overall, our results strongly urge reappraisal of deutonymph-based mite taxonomy and illuminate the importance of host-associated divergence during incipient stage of speciation in chaetodactylid mites. Furthermore, the occurrence of host switch and introgression between genetically differentiated mites entails that two host species have co-occurred in the past, thus providing a unique source of evidence for migration and competitive exclusion between the presently allopatric Xylocopa hosts.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships of all seven known species of Cecidophyopsis mites (Acari: Eriophyidae) with Ribes hosts have been inferred from ribosomal DNA sequences. This analysis found groups of closely related mites. The five gall-forming species, four of which are monophagous and one which has two hosts, were found in two groups. Another group consisted of the two non gall-forming species, one of which has two hosts, while the other is monophagous. The molecular phylogeny of their known Ribes host plants was calculated using the equivalent ribosomal regions as the mites. The structure of the two trees (mites vs hosts) was clearly different, implying that mite speciation did not closely follow speciation events in the plant hosts. Instead, the three groups of Ribes-infesting Cecidophyopsis mites have derived from a common galling ancestor millions of years ago. Each mite group has recently diversified onto different primary hosts. One group of mites has also lost the galling habit. The results have implications for host range changes and the durability of mite-resistance genes in cultivated Ribes.  相似文献
