When foraging on carrion resources, the wasp Vespula germanica usually makes repeated visits to the feeding site until depleting the resource. In the present study we analyzed how environmental cues affect wasps' behavior when re‐locating a protein food source. We studied this behavior in two different natural habitats: closed and open habitats. As closed habitats have more references to orient wasps to the feeding site than open habitats, we hypothesized that they would return to the foraging site more frequently in closed habitats than in open ones. We tested this hypothesis by studying wasp behavior in three different natural habitat conditions: (i) closed habitats, (ii) open habitats, and (iii) open habitats artificially modified by adding five sticks with flagging. Experiments consisted of training individual wasps to feed from a certain array, and at the testing phase we removed food and displaced the array by 60 cm. Therefore, we recorded wasps’choices when returning to the training area, by counting both the wasps’first approaches and the number of visits to the original feeding site and the displaced array. Wasps' behavior while re‐locating a protein food source was different if foraging at open or closed habitats. Wasps more frequently revisited a previous feeding location when foraging in closed habitats than when foraging in open ones. Furthermore, wasps more frequently visited the displaced array than the original feeding site in all three treatments. Nevertheless, when wasps were trained in closed habitats, they returned to the original feeding site more frequently than if trained in open ones. Interestingly, when five sticks with flagging were added in open habitats, wasps responded similarly as in closed habitats without these references. The results show that foraging behavior in V. germanica seems to be different in closed and open habitats, probably associated with the existence of references that guide foragers when re‐locating undepleted resources.  相似文献

Three groups of rats were tested in different types of elevated plus-mazes, a normal one (two closed and two open arms), a totally closed one (four closed arms) and a totally open (four open arms). Closed arms were surrounded by 40-cm high wooden walls and open arms were surrounded by 0.5-cm high transparent Plexiglas ledges. As expected, in the closed maze rats explored equally all the arms, both in terms of time and frequency of entries, as well as in exploration of the extremities. Rats in the totally open maze also presented a similar pattern of exploration, that is, no significant differences were found between the results obtained with the closed and the open mazes in terms of central and extremities exploration. It is suggested that the typical behavior of rats in the conventional elevated plus-maze is caused by the contrasting characteristics of open and closed arms rather than by the physical aversive characteristics of the open arms per se. Results also confirm a prediction made by a computer model simulating rat exploratory behavior in virtual mazes, normal, totally open and totally closed.  相似文献

对独叶草营养叶二叉分枝脉序及其中的网结脉和盲脉的形态学研究表明:(1)网结脉中2条完全汇合的与靠近脉中完全分离的叶脉之间未发现任何形式的维管束汇合的中间类型及网结脉中具有不同程度的连接脉退化痕迹的事实表明,网结脉不可能由靠近脉产生,相反,由于网结脉中联结脉的退化而形成开放脉;(2)盲脉是通过伴随着齿退化的达齿脉的退化、网结脉中联结脉的间断、非网结脉由分枝处间断三种方式产生的;(3)越裂片脉的出现及其可以形成网结脉的现象表明独叶草营养叶可能曾具有较为复杂的脉序,这种叶脉也呈现出退化的趋势;(4)独叶草营养叶的二叉分枝脉序可能是一种退化性状,而网结脉的出现可能是这种退化过程中的残留痕迹。  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether various positions of the lower extremity affect the muscle activity of the vastus medialis obliquus (VMO) differently during both open and closed kinetic chain exercise conditions among patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). Patients who presented with symptoms consistent with PFPS completed a series of open kinetic chain and closed kinetic chain exercises in which VMO activity was measured and compared. Statistical analysis revealed that there is less than a 0.001% (open kinetic chain) or 0.005% (closed kinetic chain) chance that all positions activate the VMO equally. In open kinetic exercise, maximum VMO activity was achieved with terminal knee extension with medial tibial rotation. During closed kinetic exercises, squats with external rotation were preferred for maximum VMO activation. Therefore, our results highlight the importance of including both the open and closed kinetic chain exercises into rehabilitation programs for patients with PFPS.  相似文献

Abstract Intermittently open/closed coastal lakes and lagoons are susceptible to contamination and nutrient‐enrichment. Although many of them are considered to be degraded, our understanding of their ecology and the effects of anthropogenic activity is limited. This study of coastal lakes in New South Wales compared the density and distribution of macrobenthos in localities that differed in their degree of isolation from the sea, that is, open versus closed lakes and mouths versus inner reaches. Lakes kept open artificially (to improve water quality and reduce flooding), were also compared with naturally open or closed lakes. Densities of macrobenthos were usually greater in the mouths of open than of closed lakes, but the opposite was true in inner reaches. While isolated localities differed more between lakes than did mouths, small‐scale variability was greater in the latter. Spatial patterns were less temporally consistent in inner reaches than in mouths. Differences in densities and spatial variability between mouths and inner reaches were influenced primarily by whether a lake was open or closed and secondarily by manipulation of the mouth. While, for example, densities in open manipulated systems were usually greater in the mouths, but smaller in the inner reaches, the effect of manipulation was less obvious in closed lakes. Differences in density between types of lakes were not clearly related to physical factors although, within lakes, benthos generally correlated negatively with salinity and positively with median particle‐size, silt and organic content. The effects of factors that modify the degree of isolation of coastal lakes are discussed and it is concluded that current levels of isolation do not appear to affect macrobenthos adversely. Nevertheless, increased isolation, which is likely as a result of climatic change, may well do so, particularly in lakes already stressed by human impacts.  相似文献

Clonal pheochromocytoma (PC-12) cells have four different types of voltage-dependent K+ channels whose activation does not require high concentrations of Ca++ on the cytoplasmic side of the membrane (Hoshi, T., and R. W. Aldrich, 1988, Journal of General Physiology, 91:73-106). The durations of open and closed events of these four different types of voltage-dependent K+ channels were measured using the excised configuration of the patch-clamp method. The open durations of a class of K+ channels termed the Kz channel, which activates rapidly and inactivates slowly in response to depolarizing pulses, had two exponential components. The closed durations of the Kz channel had at least four exponential components. The time constants of the fastest of the two exponential components in the closed durations were very similar to those of the two exponential components present in the first-latency distribution. The first latencies of the Kz channel decreased steeply with depolarization, contributing to the increased probability of the channel being open with depolarization. The Kz channel also had a very slow gating process that resulted in a clustering of blank sweeps. A gating scheme containing two open states and five closed states is consistent with the observations. The Ky channel had one exponential component in the open durations and three exponential components in the closed durations. The first latencies varied greatly depending on the prepulse voltage and duration. The results were consistent with a sequential model with a large number of closed states and one open state. The Kx channel, which required large hyperpolarizing prepulses to remove steady state inactivation and did not show inactivation with maintained depolarization, had two exponential components in the open durations and three exponential components in the closed durations. The burst behavior of the Kx channel involved many more than two states. The transient Kw channel had one exponential component in the open durations and the mean open time increased with depolarization. The first latencies of the Kw channel were steeply dependent on the voltage, decreasing with depolarization.  相似文献

Temporary feeding on willow buds and leaves by nesting greater snow geese provided us with an opportunity to test the relative importance of nutrients and deterrents in affecting the palatability for geese of a food plant with a high phenol content. Protein, total phenol and fiber (neutral and acid detergent fiber, and lignin) were analyzed in closed and open buds and in rolled and open leaves. Geese feed on willows at the open-buds and rolled-leaf stages but not at the closed-bud and open-leaf stages. Protein content was higher in open buds and rolled leaves (25–27%) than in closed buds and open leaves (19–21%). Phenol content increased during leaf emergence but was already high (14%) in rolled leaves. All plant fibers were very high in closed buds but declined rapidly during leaf emergence. The increase in phenol: protein ratio appeared to be more important than phenol concentration alone in explaining the cessation of feeding by geese on willow leaves whereas the high fiber content of closed buds may explain why they were not eaten. Our results illustrate the value of a multifactorial approach in the study of the food selection process in herbivores.  相似文献

Areas closed to fishing are advocated as both fisheries management and biodiversity conservation tools. However, few studies investigate the responses of suites of both target and non-target fish species within an assemblage, which is an important consideration for ecosystem-based fisheries management approaches. Diver-operated stereo-video was used to assess the abundance and length of coral reef fish across multiple areas both open and closed to fishing at the Houtman Abrolhos Islands, Western Australia. After taking into consideration spatial differences in benthic habitat, the composition of fish assemblages was found to differ between open and closed areas. The target species, Plectropomus leopardus, was approximately two times more abundant in closed areas. Furthermore, 51 % of P. leopardus were larger than the minimum legal length (MLL) for retention in closed areas compared with only 1.8 % in areas open to fishing. Another target species, Choerodon rubescens was surveyed in greater abundance at sizes larger than the MLL in closed areas (64 % >400 mm) in comparison with areas open to fishing (36 %). A number of non-target species were also larger in closed areas (e.g., Kyphosus cornelii, Scarus schlegeli). In contrast, several non-targeted prey species were more abundant in open areas (e.g., Pomacentrus milleri was six times more abundant in open areas). Our results document complex responses of target and non-target species in closed areas at the Houtman Abrolhos Islands.  相似文献

Closed vitrification can minimize the risk of microbiological transmission through liquid nitrogen during the cooling, storage, and warming procedures. As cooling rates may reduce when closed vitrification is applied, clinical outcomes should be compared between closed and open vitrification in order to justify the use of closed vitrification. This study was conducted to investigate the differences in survival, implantation, clinical pregnancy, and live birth rates between closed and open vitrification for human blastocyst cryopreservation. This systematic review and meta-analysis included 7 studies that reported survival, implantation, clinical pregnancy, or live birth rates following closed or open vitrification. There were no statistically significant differences in survival rates (risk ratio [RR]: 1.00, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.98–1.02), implantation rates (RR: 1.02, 95% CI: 0.93–1.11), clinical pregnancy rates (RR: 0.99, 95% CI: 0.89–1.10), and live birth rates (RR: 0.77, 95% CI: 0.58–1.03) between closed and open vitrification. Although there was no statistical significance, the tendency of lower live birth rates with closed vitrification than with open vitrification could be clearly identified. Therefore, it is not yet possible to conclude that closed vitrification clearly provides an aseptic alternative to open vitrification in human blastocyst cryopreservation.  相似文献

Age, height, number of shoot endings, neighbor density, and overhead cover from local neighbors were recorded for over 1, 400 young sugar maple trees under 200 cm tall and growing in open vs. closed (shaded) habitats from two sites. Up to about age 5 yr, seedlings increase in height but rarely branch. Once branching starts, there begins a general decrease with age in the number of centimeters of height added for every new shoot ending that is produced. The pattern of this allometric relationship, however, is plastic—in the closed habitats, this switch to increased branching relative to height growth is delayed compared with trees from the open habitats. Within the closed habitats, branching is also delayed for trees having dense cover from local neighboring understory vegetation compared with trees that are not overtopped by understory vegetation. The oldest and tallest unbranched seedlings were recorded from the closed habitats. Seedlings displaying the first branch, however, were younger in the open habitats than in the closed habitats, and at one site they were shorter in the open habitat than in the closed habitat. These results suggest that the allometric relationship between height and degree of branching can display adaptive plasticity depending on light availability: As competition for light decreases (with greater light availability), there is an increasing premium on lateral growth (branching) to maximize light interception. Conversely, as competition for light increases (under decreasing light availability), there is an increasing premium on vertical growth (through strong and persistent apical dominance) to minimize the chances of being overtopped by neighbors.  相似文献

Initial orientation and homing time were recorded in Argogorytes carbonarius after displacement in “open” and “closed” containers during two periods: “first” release dates and “later” release dates. At the later releases “closed” wasps homed much better than at first releases and better than “open” wasps. At the first releases, on the other hand, the “open” wasps homed (slightly) better than the “closed” wasps. An interpretation relates the better homing of “closed” wasps at the later trials to route learning at the first trials and discusses the differences and peculiarities of homing from familiar terrain and of home orientation by path integration.  相似文献

The mechanisms and kinetic course of BOD exertion were compared in both open and closed systems. Two open reactors, a simulated stream device, and an open stirred reactor were employed, and the closed systems consisted of standard BOD bottles and 2.4-liter vessels. In the closed systems, both quiescent and stirred conditions of incubation were examined. Biological solids concentration, bacteria and protozoa concentration, substrate analysis, and chemical oxygen demand as well as biochemical oxygen utilization were employed to assess the performance of these systems. Oxygen uptake rate constants were observed to increase with increasing concentration o carbon source, thus militating against irect use of the usual dilution technique for predicting rate of deoxygenation in receiving streams. The relationship between specific O2 uptake rate and substrate concentration approximated a hyperbolic function similar to the Mono relationship for specific growth rate and substrate concentration. A technique using an open stirred reactor than the standard BOD bottle dilution technique is recommended.  相似文献

1. Tallgrass prairies and their streams are highly endangered ecosystems, and many remaining streams are threatened by the encroachment of woody riparian vegetation. An increase in riparian vegetation converts the naturally open‐canopy prairie streams to closed‐canopy systems. The effects of a change in canopy cover on stream metabolism are unknown. 2. Our goal was to determine the effects of canopy cover on prairie stream metabolism during a 4‐year period in Kings Creek, KS, U.S.A. Metabolic rates from forested reaches were compared to rates in naturally open‐canopy reaches and restoration reaches, the latter having closed canopies in 2006 and 2007 and open canopies in 2008 and 2009. Whole‐stream metabolism was estimated using the two‐station diurnal method. Chlorophyll a concentrations and mass of filamentous algae were measured after riparian removal to assess potential differences in algal biomass between reaches with open or closed canopies. 3. Metabolic rates were spatially and temporally variable even though the sites were on very similar streams or adjacent to each other within streams. Before riparian vegetation removal, whole‐stream community respiration (CR) and net ecosystem production were greater with greater canopy cover. In the vegetation removal reaches, gross primary production was slightly greater after removal. 4. Chlorophyll a concentrations were marginally significantly greater in open (naturally open and removal reaches) than in closed canopy and differed significantly between seasons. Filamentous algal biomass was greater in open than in closed‐canopy reaches. 5. Overall, the restoration allowed recovery of some features of open‐canopy prairie streams. Woody expansion apparently increases CR and moves prairie stream metabolism towards a more net heterotrophic state. An increase in canopy cover decreases benthic chlorophyll, decreases dominance of filamentous algae and potentially alters resources available to the stream food web. The results of this study provide insights for land managers and conservationists interested in preserving prairie streams in their native open‐canopy state.  相似文献

本文用膜片箝技术对机械分离培养的大鼠大脑皮层神经元胞体上的NMDA受体的单通道特性进行了研究,实验用细胞贴附和内面向外两种形式记录单离子通道的活动。电极液内含有NMDA或L-门冬氨酸时,在皮层神经元上常见电导为35pS的离子通道。通道对Na+,K+非选择性通透,对Cl-不通透,其平均开放时间和开放概率随超极化程度增大而降低。开放、关闭时间及burst时程的分布直方图均需双指数拟合。Mg2+以电压和浓度依赖性的方式减小通道开放时间,APV能阻断通道活动,温度降低使通道开放时间延长及电流幅度减小。本文结果表明大脑皮层神经元上NMDA受体通道活动自身具有电压依赖性,因此提示NMDA受体通道的正常功能活动可能依赖于某些细胞内调控过程的存在。  相似文献

The creation of forest openings is a frequently observed phenomenon in many types of forests. On the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, where the average elevation is greater than 4000 m above sea level, differences in tree growth between forest stands with openings and completely closed stands are poorly characterized. Here, we presented a dendrochronological study of Tibetan juniper (Juniperus tibetica Kom.) and Sikkim spruce (Picea spinulosa (Griff.) Beissn.) in an open and a closed stand, near Qamdo of eastern Tibet. We found that the growth of juniper responded to climate in a similar way in the open and closed stands, and was positively correlated with temperature from October to January and with the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) from September to June. In contrast, the growth of spruce responded to climate differently in the open and closed stands: growth was positively correlated with the PDSI from September to May in the open stand, whereas it was positively correlated to November and December temperatures (of the prior year) and current June temperature in the closed stand. Interannual variation in, and standard deviations among, juniper tree ring widths were similar in both stands for the past four centuries, whereas they differed in spruce over the past two centuries, particularly in the 1900s. These results suggest that juniper tree ring growth is less sensitive to stand structure than that of spruce, thus providing more reliable climate signals. The data obtained from our study will help forest managers understand the ecology of juniper and spruce in open and closed stands and are therefore useful for management planning.  相似文献

We report the species composition of subaerial epixylic algae and cyanobacteria from a South-East Asian mountain rainforest locality in Cibodas, West Java. Green algae (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Trentepohliales) were dominant and Cyanobacteria were the second most frequent group. We specifically concentrated on the comparison of species composition of closed primary forest and open antropogenic spaces. Trentepohliales and Cyanobacteria dominated in open spaces with higher light intensities, whereas closed forest localities were dominated by trebouxiophycean coccal green algae. There was a significantly higher algal diversity in open spaces than in closed forest samples indicating the limiting effect of light on subaerial algal communities of closed tropical forests. A number of isolated strains and morphotypes probably represent undescribed taxa. The gating kinetics of batrachotoxin-modified Na+ channels were studied in outside-out patches of axolemma from the squid giant axon by means of the cut-open axon technique. Single channel kinetics were characterized at different membrane voltages and temperatures. The probability of channel opening (Po) as a function of voltage was well described by a Boltzmann distribution with an equivalent number of gating particles of 3.58. The voltage at which the channel was open 50% of the time was a function of [Na+] and temperature. A decrease in the internal [Na+] induced a shift to the right of the Po vs. V curve, suggesting the presence of an integral negative fixed charge near the activation gate. An increase in temperature decreased Po, indicating a stabilization of the closed configuration of the channel and also a decrease in entropy upon channel opening. Probability density analysis of dwell times in the closed and open states of the channel at 0 degrees C revealed the presence of three closed and three open states. The slowest open kinetic component constituted only a small fraction of the total number of transitions and became negligible at voltages greater than -65 mV. Adjacent interval analysis showed that there is no correlation in the duration of successive open and closed events. Consistent with this analysis, maximum likelihood estimation of the rate constants for nine different single-channel models produced a preferred model (model 1) having a linear sequence of closed states and two open states emerging from the last closed state. The effect of temperature on the rate constants of model 1 was studied. An increase in temperature increased all rate constants; the shift in Po would be the result of an increase in the closing rates predominant over the change in the opening rates. The temperature study also provided the basis for building an energy diagram for the transitions between channel states.  相似文献

Identification of the minimum number of ways in which open and closed states communicate is a crucial step in defining the gating kinetics of multistate channels. We used certain correlation functions to extract information about the pathways connecting the open and closed states of the cation channel of the purified nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and of the chloride channel of Torpedo californica electroplax membranes. Single channel currents were recorded from planar lipid bilayers containing the membrane channel proteins under investigation. The correlation functions are conveniently computed from single channel current records and yield information on E, the minimum number of entry/exit states into the open or closed aggregates. E gives a lower limit on the numbers of transition pathways between open and closed states. For the acetylcholine receptor, the autocorrelation analysis shows that there are at least two entry/exit states through which the open and closed aggregates communicate. The chloride channel fluctuates between three conductance substates, here indentified as C, M, and H for closed, intermediate, and high conductance, respectively. Correlation analysis shows that E is greater than or equal to 2 for the M aggregate, indicating that there are at least two distinct entry/exit states in the M aggregate. In contrast, there is no evidence for the existence of more than one entry/exit state in the C or H aggregates. Thus, these correlation functions provide a simple and general strategy to extract information on channel gating kinetics.  相似文献

Sodium channel gating behavior was modeled with Markovian models fitted to currents from the cut-open squid giant axon in the absence of divalent cations. Optimum models were selected with maximum likelihood criteria using single-channel data, then models were refined and extended by simultaneous fitting of macroscopic ionic currents, ON and OFF gating currents, and single-channel first latency densities over a wide voltage range. Best models have five closed states before channel opening, with inactivation from at least one closed state as well as the open state. Forward activation rate constants increase with depolarization, and deactivation rate constants increase with hyperpolarization. Rates of inactivation from the open or closed states are generally slower than activation or deactivation rates and show little or no voltage dependence. Channels tend to reopen several times before inactivating. Macroscopic rates of activation and inactivation result from a combination of closed, open and inactivated state transitions. At negative potentials the time to first opening dominates the macroscopic current due to slow activation rates compared with deactivation rates: channels tend to reopen rarely, and often inactivate from closed states before they reopen. At more positive potentials, the time to first opening and burst duration together produce the macroscopic current.  相似文献

The mouse heterotopic heart transplantation has been used widely since it was introduced by Drs. Corry and Russell in 1973. It is particularly valuable for studying rejection and immune response now that newer transgenic and gene knockout mice are available, and a large number of immunologic reagents have been developed. The heart transplant model is less stringent than the skin transplant models, although technically more challenging. We have developed a modified technique and have completed over 1000 successful cases of heterotopic heart transplantation in mice. When making anastomosis of the ascending aorta and abdominal aorta, two stay sutures are placed at the proximal and distal apexes of recipient abdominal aorta with the donor s ascending aorta, then using 11-0 suture for anastomosis on both side of aorta with continuing sutures. The stay sutures make the anastomosis easier and 11-0 is an ideal suture size to avoid bleeding and thrombosis.When making anastomosis of pulmonary artery and inferior vena cava, two stay sutures are made at the proximal apex and distal apex of the recipient s inferior vena cava with the donor s pulmonary artery. The left wall of the inferior vena cava and donor s pulmonary artery is closed with continuing sutures in the inside of the inferior vena cava after, one knot with the proximal apex stay suture the right wall of the inferior vena cava and the donor s pulmonary artery are closed with continuing sutures outside the inferior vena cave with 10-0 sutures. This method is easier to perform because anastomosis is made just on the one side of the inferior vena cava and 10-0 sutures is the right size to avoid bleeding and thrombosis.
