In territorial microtines intra-specific density dependent processes can limit the maturation of individuals during the summer of their birth. This may have demographic consequences by affecting the number and the age distribution of breeding individuals in the population. Little is known about this process on a community level, though populations of many northern microtine species fluctuate in synchrony and are known to interfere socially with each other. We experimentally studied the influence of the field vole Microtus agrestis on maturation, breeding, space use and survival of weanling bank voles, Clethrionomys glareolus. Two additive competition experiments on bank vole populations were conducted in large outdoor enclosures, half of them additionally housing a field vole population. In a mid-summer experiment low population density and absence of older breeding females minimised intra-specific competition. Survival was not affected by the presence of field voles. Season had a significant effect on both the probability of maturation and breeding of the weanlings. Competition with field voles significantly delayed breeding, and coupled with seasonal effects decreased the probability of breeding. In a late-summer experiment breeding and survival of bank vole weanlings were studied for three weeks as part of a high density breeding bank vole population. Weanlings did not mature at all nor were their space use and survival affected by the presence of field voles. Our results show that competition with other species can also have an impact on breeding of immatures. In an extreme seasonal environment, even a short delay of breeding may decrease survival chances of offspring. Seasonal and competition effects together may thus limit the contribution of year born females to reproductive output of the population. Other studies have shown that adult breeding bank voles suffer lower survival in the presence of field voles, but this study showed no survival effects on the weanlings. Thus it might be beneficial for weanlings to stay immature especially in the end of the breeding season and postpone reproduction to the next breeding season if densities of competing species are high.  相似文献

Correlations between mast fruiting of bilberry Vaccinium myrtillus and peak levels of Clethrionomys-voles have been reported from both Norway and Finland, but there has been a discussion whether this is a bottom-up or a top-down relationship. In a multiple regression model, 65% of the variation in a bilberry production index calculated from game reports from southern Norway 1932–1977 could be explained by the berry index of the two preceding years and climate factors acting during key stages of the flowering cycle. High vole populations in previous years did not contribute to explain the fluctuation in berry production. I used the selected model and climate data to predict bilberry production for the period 1978–2004. Predicted berry indices of the current and previous year explained 38% and the total amount of precipitation in May–June explained 16% of the variation in a log-transformed snap-trapping index of bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus 1980–2004. The vole index was not related to any of the climate variables used to predict berry production. This pattern supports the hypothesis that vole cycles are generated by changes in plant chemistry due to climate-synchronized mast fruiting.  相似文献

To investigate nematode establishment and persistence, dauer juveniles (DJs) of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora were applied at 50 cm-2 in different crops in June and July with conventional spraying equipment and 420 l water ha-1. Application hardly had any effects on survival and infectivity. The number of DJs reaching the soil was assessed and the establishment and persistence recorded by baiting soil samples with larvae of the wax moth Galleria mellonella. The better the plant canopy was developed the fewer DJs reached the soil during application. Whereas in pasture 77% and in potatoes 78% of the applied nematodes reached the soil, in wheat and peas little less than 50%, in oil-seed rape only 5% and in lupine 6% were recorded. Between 50 and 60% of the soil samples contained H. bacteriophora a month after application with the exception of wheat (>90%) and potatoes (<5%) indicating that the number of nematodes reaching the soil during application had no influence on their establishment in the soil. Probably DJs can survive in the plant canopy and reach the soil later after application. The percentage of nematode-positive soil samples dropped considerably after tillage. In potatoes no nematodes were recovered after two months, which probably was also due to the intensive movement of the soil. Although nematodes are susceptible to freezing, temperatures below 0°C during the winter did not extinguish the H. bacteriophora population. In field crops EPN usually persisted not much longer than one year. The longest persistence of H. bacteriophora was detected 23 months after release in beans followed in rotation by wheat with red clover as cover crop. In this field larvae of the pea weevil Sitona lineatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) were detected in soil samples and found infected with the released nematode population. In the laboratory the field soils were tested for persistence of H. bacteriophora at 8°C and a half-life of 24.8 days was recorded in the absence of host insects and plants. Thus long-term persistence in the field was a result of recycling in host insects, which could not be detected in other crops than beans and clover. As H. bacteriophora seems to be restricted in its host potential, this species disappears after release once the host population is not available anymore.  相似文献

Summary We studied the reproductive investment of microtine rodents (bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus),Microtus epiroticus andMicrotus agrestis) in western Finland under predation risk from small mustelids. During 1984–1992, the yearly mean litter size of overwintered bank voles was smaller at high least weasel and stoat densities than at low densities (close to 3 versus 4–5). In addition, the annual mean litter size of young bank voles was negatively correlated to the least weasel density. In youngM. agrestis voles, the yearly late summer litter size was negatively associated with the autumn density of small mustelids. In the crash phase of the vole cycle (1989 and 1992), we removed small mustelids (mainly least weasels) from four unfenced areas in late April to late May and studied the reproduction of voles in four removal and comparable control areas (each 2–4 km2). Reduction of small mustelids significantly increased the proportion of pregnant bank vole females, but not that of pregnantMicrotus vole females. We conclude that predation risk apparently reduced reproductive investment of free-living bank vole females; these voles appear to trade their current parental investment against future survival and reproductive prospects. Accordingly, the presence of small mustelids (or their scent) may slow down the reproductive rate of voles. As antipredatory behaviours occurred on a large scale, our results add evidence to the hypothesis that crashes in multiannual vole cycles are driven by small mustelid predators.  相似文献

Ninety-five genomic sequences of the ligand-binding domain of glutamate-gated chloride channel genes of three populations of the parasitic nematode H. placei were evaluated for patterns of diversity, demography, and selection. These genes code for subunits of ion channels, which are involved in the mode of action of the most commonly used antiparasitic drugs, the macrocyclic lactones. An extremely high frequency of unique segregating sites in exons and introns was observed, with significantly negative neutrality tests in each population for noncoding, synonymous, and nonsynonymous sites. Several tests indicated that support for balancing selection, positive selection, and hitchhiking was lacking. McDonald–Kreitman tests using H. contortus or C. elegans as an outgroup revealed an extreme excess of replacement polymorphism, consistent with weak purifying selection. Although these tests agree that negative selection may explain the excess of replacement changes, an alternative interpretation is required for the significantly negative Fu and Lis D statistics based on silent and noncoding sites. These include homogeneous forces such as background selection and demographic expansion. The lack of population subdivision and the negative values of Tajimas D for this outbreeding parasitic nematode render background selection less likely than demographic expansion. Comparison of D statistics based on different site types using neutral coalescent simulations supported this interpretation. Although this statistic was more negative for nonsynonymous sites than for synonymous sites, most comparisons of the D statistic were not significantly different between mutation classes. A few significant site comparisons were also consistent with demographic expansion, because the observed test statistic (DneutralDselected) were low relative to the neutral expectations. Finally, previous mitochondrial studies also identified a demographic expansion of this parasitic nematode species, which lends further support to a scenario involving both demographic and purifying forces in the ligand-binding domain of H. placei.  相似文献

Inter-specific competition, facilitation and predation influence herbivore assemblages, but no study has experimentally explored the interactions between large ungulates and small rodents. In a fully replicated, landscape scale experiment, we manipulated densities of domestic sheep in mountain pastures in Norway. We then determined population growth and densities of rodents by live trapping in each of the areas with different sheep densities. We found that the (summer) population growth rate and autumn density of the field vole (Microtus agrestis) was lower at high sheep density. This provides the first experimental evidence of negative interactions between an ungulate and small rodent species. There was no effect on the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus), whose diet differs from sheep. Sheep density, therefore, potentially alters the pattern of inter-specific population synchrony amongst voles. Our study shows that negative interactions between large ungulates and small rodents may be species-specific and negative population consequences for the rodent population appear above threshold ungulate densities.Electronic supplementary material is available for this article at  相似文献

In natural host populations, parasitism is considered to be omnipresent and to play an important role in shaping host life history and population dynamics. Here, we study parasitism in natural populations of the zooplankton host Daphnia magna investigating their individual and population level effects during a 2-year field study. Our results revealed a rich and highly prevalent community of parasites, with eight endoparasite species (four microsporidia, one amoeba, two bacteria and one nematode) and six epibionts (belonging to five different taxa: Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyceae, Ciliata, Fungi and Rotifera). Several of the endoparasites were associated with a severe overall fecundity reduction of the hosts, while such effects were not seen for epibionts. In particular, infections by Pasteuria ramosa, White Fat Cell Disease and Flabelliforma magnivora were strongly associated with a reduction in overall D. magna fecundity. Across the sampling period, average population fecundity of D. magna was negatively associated with overall infection intensity and total endoparasite richness. Population density of D. magna was negatively correlated to overall endoparasite prevalence and positively correlated with epibiont richness. Finally, the reduction in host fecundity caused by different parasite species was negatively correlated to both parasite prevalence and the length of the time period during which the parasite persisted in the host population. Consistent with epidemiological models, these results indicate that parasite mediated host damages influence the population dynamics of both hosts and parasites.  相似文献

Some aspects of the host-parasite interaction of the nematode Heligmosomum mixtum and the bank vole have been studied. The dependence of infestation on the host sex, age and weight, the seasonal and annual abundance dynamics are investigated. It has been found that the bank vole is the main host of H. mixtum; the distribution of H. mixtum abundances in the host population is described by a negative binomial distribution model. The greatest infestation is characteristic for mature bank voles; males are infected more heavily than females. Infestation with the nematode increases alongside with the host weight. Seasonal dynamics of the nematode abundance in a bank vole population appears as a curve with a maximum in January and a minimum in August; the infestation curve for 1-month-old animals captured from June through October has two peaks (in July and October), with a minimum in June. The number of parasites in the ecosystem over a long-term period changed synchronously with the host abundance. The synchronism in the host-parasite system dynamics is possible when the parasite has a short life span, and does not influence the host abundance.  相似文献

Arvicolinae voles are small herbivores relying on constant food availability with weak adaptations to tolerate prolonged food deprivation. The present study performed a comparative analysis on the responses to 4–18 h of food deprivation in the common vole (Microtus arvalis) and the tundra vole (Microtus oeconomus). Both species exhibited rapid decreases in the plasma and liver carbohydrate concentrations during phase I of fasting and the decline in the liver glycogen level was more pronounced in the tundra vole. The plasma thyroxine concentrations of the common vole decreased after 4 h. Lipid mobilization (phase II of fasting) was indicated by the increased plasma free fatty acid levels after 8–18 (the common vole) or 4–18 h (the tundra vole) and by the elevated lipase activities. In the tundra vole, the plasma ghrelin concentrations increased after 12 h possibly to stimulate appetite. Both species showed increased liver lipid concentrations after 4 h and plasma aminotransferase and creatine kinase activities after 12–18 h of food deprivation implying liver dysfunction and skeletal muscle damage. No signs of stimulated protein catabolism characteristic to phase III of fasting were present during 18 h without food.  相似文献

Wolbachia are strictly intracellular maternally inherited α-proteobacteria, largely widespread among arthropods and filariids (i.e., filarial nematodes). Wolbachia capacities to infect new host species have been greatly evidenced and the transfer of Wolbachia between arthropods and filariids has probably occurred more than once. Interestingly, among nematode species, Wolbachia infection was found in filariids but not in closely related lineages. Their occurrence in filariids has been supposed a consequence of the parasitic lifestyle of worms within Wolbachia-infected arthropods, implying that nonfilariid worms parasitizing arthropods are also likely to be infected by some Wolbachia acquired from their hosts. To further investigate this hypothesis, we have examined seven species of nonfilariid worms of Nematoda and Nematomorpha phyla, all interacting intimately with arthropods. Wolbachia infection in nonfilariid parasitic worms was never detected by polymerase chain reaction assays of the 16S rDNA and wsp genes. By contrast, some arthropod hosts are well infected by Wolbachia of the B supergroup. Then the intimate contact with infected arthropods is not a sufficient condition to explain the Wolbachia occurrence in filariids and could underline a physiological singularity or a particular evolutionary event to acquire and maintain Wolbachia infection.  相似文献

Biological control of the cyst forming nematode Heterodera cajani was studied on sesame using plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa LPT3 and LPT5. Based on plant growth promoting attributes, two fluorescent pseudomonads, LPT3 and LPT5 were evaluated for their efficacy against cyst forming nematode Heterodera cajani that parasitize Sesamum indicum. Pseudomonas aeruginosa LPT5 produced IAA, HCN, chitinase, glucanase and siderophore, and also solubilized inorganic phosphate in vitro. Moreover, LPT5 resulted in mortality of second stage juveniles of H. cajani, which was 13% higher as compared to P. aeruginosa LPT3. Interestingly, when both strains were inoculated together for the management of H. cajani on Sesamum indicum the population of H. cajani was reduced significantly, in field trial. Approximately 60% reduction in cyst and juveniles population was recorded with LPT5 coated seeds, while LPT3 resulted in 49% reduction in cyst and juvenile population as compared to control. Plants grown with seeds bacterized with LPT5 and reduced doses of urea, diammonium phosphate (DAP), muriate of potash (K) and gypsum gave maximum increase in yield, in comparison to that of plants raised under the influence of recommended or full doses of the chemical fertilizers. Pseudomonas aeruginosa LPT5 also showed excellent root colonization.  相似文献

Rodent host dynamics and dispersal are thought to be critical for hantavirus epidemiology as they determine pathogen persistence and transmission within and between host populations. We used landscape genetics to investigate how the population dynamics of the bank vole Myodes glareolus, the host of Puumala hantavirus (PUUV), vary with forest fragmentation and influence PUUV epidemiology. We sampled vole populations within the Ardennes, a French PUUV endemic area. We inferred demographic features such as population size, isolation and migration with regard to landscape configuration. We next analysed the influence of M. glareolus population dynamics on PUUV spatial distribution. Our results revealed that the global metapopulation dynamics of bank voles were strongly shaped by landscape features, including suitable patch size and connectivity. Large effective size in forest might therefore contribute to the higher observed levels of PUUV prevalence. By contrast, populations from hedge networks highly suffered from genetic drift and appeared strongly isolated from all other populations. This might result in high probabilities of local extinction for both M. glareolus and PUUV. Besides, we detected signatures of asymmetric bank vole migration from forests to hedges. These movements were likely to sustain PUUV in fragmented landscapes. In conclusion, our study provided arguments in favour of source‐sink dynamics shaping PUUV persistence and spread in heterogeneous, Western European temperate landscapes. It illustrated the potential contribution of landscape genetics to the understanding of the epidemiological processes occurring at this local scale.  相似文献

Culture filtrates of Beauveria bassiana at different concentrations were evaluated for nematicidal activity against the northern root knot nematode (Meloidogyne hapla); bioassays included egg hatching, mortality and infectivity on tomato plants in pots under glasshouse conditions. The percentage mortality and inhibition of hatching of root-knot nematode were directly proportional to the concentration of culture filtrates of B. bassiana. Soil drenching with culture filtrate of B. bassiana significantly reduced nematode population densities in soil and in the roots and subsequent gall formation and egg-mass production by M. hapla under glasshouse conditions.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to study the efficacy of the insect parasitic nematodeHeterorhabditis sp. (HW79) as a biological control agent ofOtiorrhynchus salicicola. This weevil species is reported as a pest of ornamental plants in Switzerland and Italy. Dipping plastic boxes containing heavily infested cuttings of laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) in a nematode suspension resulted in approximately 100% parasitisation of full-grown larvae, pupae and non-emerged young adults. The average dose resulting from dipping varied between 56,000 and 62,000 nematodes per liter soil. This experiment was run under natural outdoor conditions. In a further outdoor experiment, pottedLigustrum plants were inoculated with eggs ofO. salicicola and later 20,000 infective juvenile nematodes per liter soil were added to the soil surface. The resulting weevil mortality in the treated pots was 78%. In seven greenhouse tests using the same nematode dose in pots with horticultural soil to which weevil larvae had been added, weevil mortality varied between 76% and 100%, the arithmetic average being 90%. These results indicate that Heterorhabditid nematodes may provide an effective means of controllingO. salicicola. In an other experiment usingO. sulcatus larvae, the influence of application time on nematode efficacy was investigated. When nematodes were added a few days before weevil larvae had hatched from the eggs, no parasitic effect was obtained. Nematode applications done shortly after larval hatching however, resulted in complete weevil control. These results are of significance in timing nematode applications in practice.   相似文献

Spatial structure in the distribution of pathogen infection can influence both epidemiology and host-parasite coevolutionary processes. It may result from the spatial heterogeneity of intrinsic and extrinsic factors, or from the local population dynamics of hosts and parasites. In this study, we investigated the effects of landscape, host dispersal and demography (population abundance and phase of the fluctuation) on the distribution of a gastro-intestinal nematode Trichuris arvicolae in the fossorial water vole Arvicola terrestris sherman. This rodent exhibits outbreaks occurring regularly in Franche-Comté (France). Thirteen out-of-phase populations were studied in autumn 2003. They exhibited highly different T. arvicolae prevalences. The heterogeneity in prevalences was not explained by population structure, landscape or vole abundance, but by the phase of the vole population fluctuations. Populations at the end of the high density phase showed null prevalence whereas populations in increase or outbreak phases exhibited higher prevalences. Population genetic analyses based on microsatellites revealed significant differentiation between vole populations, and higher dispersal rates of young voles compared with old ones. These younger individuals were also infected more frequently than older voles. This suggested a role of host dispersal in the distribution of T. arvicolae. However, there was a strong discrepancy between the spatial patterns of prevalence and of host genetics or demographic phase. Genetic differentiation and differences in demographic phase exhibited significant spatial autocorrelations whereas prevalence did not. We concluded that the distribution of T. arvicolae is influenced by vole dispersal, although this effect might be overwhelmed by local adaptation processes or environmental conditions.  相似文献

The interaction between Glomus intraradices and the root-lesion nematode Pratylenchus vulnus was studied on micropropagated BA-29 quince rootstock during one growing season. Inoculation with G. intraradices significantly increased growth of plants in low P soil and was more effective than P fertilization at increasing top-plant development. In the presence of the nematode, mycorrhizal plants achieved higher values in all growth parameters measured. P. vulnus caused a significant decrease in the percentage of root length colonized by G. intraradices and fewer internal vesicles were formed within the host roots. Enhanced root mass production accounted for the twofold increase in final nematode population recovered from plants with combined inoculations of pathogen and symbiont. Low levels were found of Al, Fe, Mn and Zn in nonmycorrhizal nematode-infected plants in low P soil. G. intraradices-inoculated plants reached the highest foliar levels of N, Ca, Mg, Mn, Cu and Zn. Mycorrhizal plants infected with P. vulnus maintained normal to high levels of Mn, Cu, and Zn. Inoculation with G. intraradices favours quince growth and confers protection against P. vulnus by improving plant nutrition.  相似文献

Age variation in a fluctuating population of the common vole   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
We analysed variation in age in a fluctuating population of the common vole (Microtus arvalis) in southern Moravia, Czech Republic, to test the assumption of the senescence hypothesis that the age of voles increases with increasing population density. Between 1996 and 1998, we monitored the demographic changes by snap-trapping and live-trapping in a field population passing through the increase, peak and decline phase of the population cycle. We used the eye lens mass method to determine the age of snap-trapped animals and those that died in live-traps. The average age of winter males was clearly higher after the peak phase breeding season than before it. No such phase-dependent shift in age, however, was observed in the female component. Male age continued to increase from autumn to spring over the pre-peak winter, and the highest age was in spring of the peak phase year. However, after the peak phase breeding season the highest age was achieved in winter, with the decline phase males during the next spring tending to be younger. The average age of females in spring populations was always lower than in winter populations. The average age of voles from live-traps was always higher than voles from snap-traps, particularly in winter and spring populations, suggesting the presence of senescent animals. Although the density-dependent changes in age are consistent with those observed for other voles, they provide only weak evidence that population cycles in the common vole are accompanied by pronounced shifts in individual age, particularly in female voles.Due to an error in the citation line, this revised PDF (published in December 2003) deviates from the printed version, and is the correct and authoritative version of the paper.  相似文献

Summary We examined demographic effects of familiarity and relatedness in the bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus (Schreber) in four 0.5-ha enclosures in Central Finland. In two enclosures were mature voles which had overwintered together and some of their mature off-spring (hereafter referred to as Friends), and in the other two individuals of the same species captured from different localities near the study area (Strangers). The experiment lasted from June to September. The populations of Friends reached densities twice as high as those of Strangers with a significantly higher rate of recruitment and survival of the young. This may have been due to mutual familiarity decreasing antagonism towards the juveniles. The conflicting results obtained from studies of Clethrionomys and Microtus are discussed. We believe that these genera represent behavioural adaptations to different habitats and ways of life. Most behavioural population regulation hypotheses are based on studies of Microtus. We conclude that these results should be applied with great caution to other rodent genera.  相似文献

Resistance to the dagger nematode Xiphinema index has been an important objective in grape rootstock breeding programs. This nematode not only causes severe feeding damage to the root system, but it also vectors grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV), the causal agent of fanleaf degeneration and one of the most severe viral diseases of grape. The established screening procedures for dagger nematode resistance are time consuming and can produce inconsistent results. A fast and reliable greenhouse-based system for screening resistance to X. index that is suitable for genetic studies and capable of evaluating breeding populations is needed. In this report, the dynamics of nematode numbers, gall formation, and root weight loss were investigated using a variety of soil mixes and pot sizes over a 52-week period. Results indicated that the number of galls formed was correlated with the size of the nematode population and with the degree of root weight loss. After inoculation with 100 nematodes, gall formation could be reliably evaluated in 4–8 weeks in most plant growth conditions and results were obtained 6 months more rapidly than past evaluation methods. This modified X. index resistance screening method was successfully applied to 185 of the 188 F1 progeny from a cross of D8909-15 × F8909-17 (the 9621 population), which segregates for a form of X. index resistance originally derived from Vitis arizonica. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis was carried out on both parental genetic maps of 255 markers using MapQTL 4.0. Results revealed that X. index resistance is controlled by a major QTL, designated Xiphinema index Resistance 1 (XiR1), near marker VMC5a10 on chromosome 19. The XiR1 QTL was supported by a LOD score of 36.9 and explained 59.9% of the resistance variance in the mapping population.
