An improved epilithon sampler is described which allows for in situ substrate sampling and multiple washing of the sample surface. Good sample replication indicates minimal loss of detached epilithic material during collection. The sampler is evaluated in two acid lakes between which a significant difference in both the total cover of epilithic material and in diatom standing crop is demonstrated. The relevance of quantitative measurements of diatom epilithon abundance to palaeolimnology is emphasized.  相似文献

The sampling skills of three common European fish species (Barbus barbus, Chondrostoma nasus and Squalius cephalus) were tested to assess their potential as biomonitors of past changes in river water quality through the analysis of diatoms in fish guts. The study was performed on three rivers with different chemical and physical conditions. Comparison of similarity indices revealed low diatom assemblage resemblance between epilithic samples and samples collected from fish guts at the same locality. In contrast, a mixed-effect linear model identified significant differences between locations through comparison of diatom-based water quality indices. Among fish species, diatom indices calculated from gut samples of B. barbus and C. nasus were in most cases not significantly different from those from epilithic samples while those from S. cephalus were often significantly different. The results of the study demonstrate that diatom analysis of fish guts provides a clear distinction between eutrophic and hypereutrophic rivers. Finer nutrient variations within hypereutrophic conditions were also found to be significant for some diatom indices. In this context, choice of appropriate diatom water quality index proved to be crucial in maximizing the sensitivity of the method.  相似文献

Epilithic diatom communities are particularly suitable for the evaluation of freshwater quality. In Ecuador, however, no water quality index includes this biotic parameter. This work is the first attempt in the country to determine the composition of epilithic diatom communities associated with different degrees of eutrophication. This was accomplished by measuring physical, chemical and microbiological variables at five sampling sites along the Pita River, Ecuador, from August to December 2016. The results indicate a clear gradient of eutrophication from sampling sites P1 (good water) in the upper reaches to P5 (bad water) located in the lower reaches. Concerning diatom analyses, the results indicated a high diversity for tropical areas in terms of species richness, varying from S = 34 in headwaters to S = 42 downstream. Moreover, the results obtained suggest a lack of concordance with the trophic values given to some of the epilithic diatoms in the literature. There were also species that seem to be sensitive to downstream nutrient increases that were not considered as bioindicators in previous studies. We concluded that the trophic values of diatom species available in the scientific literature are not directly applicable to their sites in the Pita River. Hence, it is necessary to establish a trophic diatom index for the Andean region of Ecuador.  相似文献

The Stone Brusher is designed to take qualitative or semi-quantitative samples of material attached to stones at 7–50 cm depth in running or stagnant waters. The epilithic material is dislodged from the stone surface with a rotating brush enclosed in a chamber and the material is drawn up directly into the sample bottle with an air-cylinder. The operator takes a sample quickly and without putting hands into the water. The sampling area is about 28 cm2. The sampler is made of plastic, stainless steel and aluminium and weighs 3.1 kg. The equipment is robust and easily handled and it is constructed to meet the demand for standardized sampling for research and environmental monitoring and to improve working conditions for sampling personnel. The equipment allows sampling from bedrock and large stones that cannot be lifted from the bottom and it can be used for reliable sampling also in fast-flowing streams where the dislodged material is easily flushed away. Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and diatom analyses, this new sampler is evaluated in comparison to the recognized toothbrush method, which indicates that the Stone Brusher reduces sampling variability compared with the toothbrush method.  相似文献

A generic index (GI) utilizing epilithic diatom assemblages as abioindicator of water pollution in subtropical rivers in Taiwan was applied toastudy of a tropical river. Seven sites on the River Tsanwun were sampledseasonally from August 1995 to June 1998. Although there is a marked differencein water chemistry between tropical and subtropical rivers in Taiwan, thedominant genera of their diatom assemblages are quite similar. The six generaused for the calculation of GI in the subtropical rivers were also the maincomponents of diatom assemblages in the River Tsanwun. The calculated valuesdisplayed a close correlation with water quality, evaluated on the basis ofphysical and chemical variables. A strong correlation was found between this GIand other diatom-based indices of water quality.  相似文献

Abstract. In order to forecast consequences of climatic changes for littoral algae in coastal ecosystems, the effects of temperature increase on spring bloom dynamics of epilithic diatom communities were studied in two ways: (1) Communities were compared from sites receiving different amounts of cooling water discharge from a nuclear power plant. (2) Communities from the exceptionally warm spring of 1989 were compared with those from the same sites in the preceding normal years. The studies were carried out in and around the Forsmark Biotest Basin, an artificial waterbody that receives brackish cooling water from the Forsmark nuclear power plant on the Swedish east coast. Species composition and biomass data from 200 epilithic diatom samples taken in the period January-May from 1983 to 1989 were analysed. Multiple regression analysis was used to show the responses of diatom cover, community diversity and abundances of individual taxa to water temperature and other environmental factors. Constrained ordination (CCA) was used to display the relationship of overall community composition to environment. Increased water temperature resulted in higher biomass through a chain of ecological effects. Strong reduction of ice cover was crucial in this chain, resulting in reduced loss of diatom cells by reduced abrading and higher primary production by higher availability of light, nutrients and substrate. The conclusion is that large blooms of fast-growing epilithic diatoms in large colonies can occupy the niche that emerges when the ice-free season is prolonged in the northern Baltic Sea and areas similar in salinity and climatic conditions. Dramatic species shifts may only be expected if the winter ice cover is totally absent.  相似文献

We investigated epilithic diatoms in rivers draining to the Nyanza Bay in Lake Victoria (Kenya) with the aim of determining environmental gradients in the assemblages and testing the usefulness of diatom metrics from temperate regions. Spatial and temporal variations of assemblages were studied in 12 sites of three rivers. Kibos, Nyando, and Kisat rivers contained 224 diatom taxa collected on seven sampling occasions over 4 years. Species richness showed a marginal decrease downstream and was the lowest at sites with high conductivity and ammonia–nitrogen levels. Two-Way Indicator Species Analysis and Canonical Correspondence Analysis revealed two major groups of river sites. Conductivity, alkalinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and silicate were the most important variables influencing species distribution. Ecological diatom metrics of temperate regions and the Specific Pollution sensitivity Index showed good relationships with environmental variables. Both diatom assemblages and averaged indicator values were strong in predicting sites of ecological deterioration and in differentiating an upstream site of better quality (drinking water supply of Kisumu), thereby confirming epilithic diatoms as suitable water quality indicators in equatorial rivers. The use of metrics initially designed for temperate rivers, however, appears less valuable in good quality tropical rivers because potential indicators are not considered.  相似文献

Large epiphytic and epilithic diatom species hosting other diatoms were observed in several fresh- and brackish water sites in Southern California. The most commonly encountered hosts were species forming long filaments attached to rocks or macroalgae, Hydrosera whampoensis (Schwarz) Hendey, Melosira varians Agardh, Pleurosira laevis (Ehrenberg) Compere and Terpsinoe musica Ehrenberg. These large diatoms often had smaller diatoms attached, usually to the girdle bands and occasionally to the mucilage pads connecting the cells. For example, cells of T. musica were observed supporting growth of a diverse diatom assemblage composed of species of the genera Achnanthes , Achnanthidium , Amphora , Cocconeis and Tabularia; Synedra sp. was attached to M. varians and B. paxillifer; and Cocconeis placentula was seen on H. whampoensis. Thus, large epiphytic and epilithic diatoms seem to provide suitable sites for attachment of small epiphytic diatom species, and it appears that this phenomenon is more common than previously thought.  相似文献

Large-scale patterns of benthic diatom assemblages were analyzed in an agricultural basin, the Guadiana River. The distribution patterns of epilithic diatom assemblages were analyzed at different spatial scales: the whole watershed, the upper calcareous subcatchment and the mid-lower siliceous subcatchment. At the whole watershed scale, two major ecological gradients were revealed. The first one summarized the diatom distribution throughout a nutrient concentration gradient, while the second gradient was related to the geological structure of the watershed. Variance partitioning allowed the effects of the different sets of environmental parameters related to every CCA gradient to be separated. Analyzing the subcatchment gradients with partial CCA allowed us to define specific key factors that affect diatom species composition. Although water chemistry consistently played the most important role in structuring diatom assemblages in the Guadiana, spatial factors such as altitude or geographic location also explained some variation in diatom distribution.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Grazing experiments were conducted in a small Kentucky stream to determine if epilithic diatom taxa differed in susceptibility to grazing by the larval caddisfly, Neophylax autumnus , and whether ingested taxa varied in digestibility. Live/dead ratios of diatom cells from N. autumnus faecal material were compared with live/dead ratios of cells taken from adjacent epilithic habitats to determine diatom digestibility. Selectivity was studied by comparing relative abundances of diatom taxa on substrata with the relative abundances of these taxa in grazer faecal material.
2. 73% of the diatoms collected from epilithic habitats contained intact chloroplasts and were characterized as live cells. Only 42% of diatoms eliminated in caddisfly faeces were living. The five dominant diatom taxa did not differ in digestibility. Elimination of viable diatoms in grazer faecal material may contribute to diatom drift in streams, and thus supply individuals for downstream recolonization. Failure to document live/dead ratios of diatoms from grazed substrata can lead to overestimation of the digestibility of taxa and misinterpretation of results.

Grazers in this investigation were more successful at ingesting large, high-profile diatom taxa (i.e. Cymbella, Meridion and Gomphonema ) and less able to remove small, adnate forms ( Achnanthes minutissima ). A study of the epilithic diatom, macroalgal and macrophyte communities from a spring-fed stream in Ontario, Canada was undertaken from September 1996 to July 1997. The relative abundance of the epilithic diatom flora, percent cover of macroalgal and macrophyte taxa, and several physical and chemical stream conditions were monitored along a 20-m stretch at each of four sites, approximately every 2 months. Several stream conditions were relatively constant over the sampling period (pH, maximum width and maximum depth), while others exhibited a distinct seasonal pattern (water temperature, specific conductance and daylength) and some fluctuated strongly with no discernable seasonal pattern (turbidity, current velocity). A total of 124 taxa were identified from the four sites, including 79 epilithic diatoms, three macroalgal diatom species (large gelatinous masses), one cyanobacterium, two red algae, eight green algae, one chrysophyte alga, one tribophyte alga, three mosses, three horsetails and 23 angiosperm taxa. Species richness was positively correlated to stream channel maximum width and depth, indicating that the total number of species tends to increase in a downstream direction. Distribution of several diatom and macroalgal species was significantly correlated to stream conditions (e.g. Gomphonema parvulum and Phormidium subfuscum with current velocity); however, the vast majority of species did not display seasonal variation in abundance that could be explained by changes in stream conditions. Many of the taxa identified from Blue Springs Creek are common elsewhere in North America.  相似文献

We compared the use of epilithic, epiphytic, and epipelic diatom communities in stream biomonitoring by investigating species composition and relationships with measured water quality variables in two tributaries of the Grand River, Ontario, Canada. Although ordination showed some separation of the epilithon from other habitats, clear habitat preferences and seasonality were not identified. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that measured water quality variables explained the major gradients in the diatom data for all three habitats. The diatoms from each habitat were strongly related to alkalinity, suspended solids, biological oxygen demand and conductivity, and in addition, epipelic and epiphytic diatoms showed significant relationships with total phosphorus. It was concluded that although some species were more abundant in one habitat than the others, the community structure of the epilithic, epiphytic and epipelic habitats from these streams was not consistently different. The results indicate no apparent benefit to sampling discrete habitats for water quality monitoring using diatoms, however, the best relationship are obtained using the sum of the diatom data from all three habitats.  相似文献

Responses of the epilithic diatom communities to environmental gradients were analysed at 135 river stations in Finland. In addition, the biological quality of the water was evaluated using diatoms in five rivers having different types of human pressures. According to CCA, conductivity, total P, pH and humus content had the most significant effect on the diatom community structure. The ratio of the constrained axis (λ1) and first unconstrained axis (λ2) was highest for conductivity (1.21), total P (0.83) and pH (0.67). Physical factors had somewhat weaker effects. Five different diatom community types were separated in chemically different rivers using ordination. The effects of purified sewage on diatom‐inferred water quality estimates were strongest in late summer. The effects of cattle‐farming and cultivation were difficult to separate.  相似文献

Epiphytic, epilithic, and surface sediment diatom assemblages were identified and enumerated from 35 study ponds on CapeHerschel (78°37″N, 74°42″W), east-central Ellesmere Island, Canada. All the sites are shallow (maximum depth <2 m), clear, oligotrophic, and freshwater. The ponds freeze completely for 10 months of the year. Major ion concentrations are relatively similar among the 35 sites, although environmental gradients exist. Over 130 diatom taxa from 28 genera were identified in the periphyton samples. Marked differences in species composition were evident among the ponds. Moreover, many of the diatoms exhibited varying degrees of microhabitat specificity. Variance partitioning by canonical correspondence analysis showed that 26% of the total variance exhibited by diatom species composition could be accounted for by the measured environmental variables (i.e. 10.2% by habitat and 15.8% by water chemistry). Pondwater alkalinity best explained the distribution of taxa, and weighted averaging regression and calibration were used to develop a transfer function to infer pondwater alkalinity from the diatom assemblages. Other important environmental variables included [Na+] for the epilithic and [SiO2] for the epiphytic assemblages.  相似文献

The seasonal abundance of epilithic algae was correlated with major physico-chemical parameters in a first-order, heavily shaded stream in northern Arizona. Diatoms made up over 85%, by numerical abundance, of the epilithon community Light energy, water temperature, and stream discharge were most highly correlated with seasonal abundance of epilithic diatom taxa when analyzed with stepwise multiple regression. None of the chemical variables measured in the study (NO3-N, O-PO4, SiO2, including PH) was found to be significantly correlated with the seasonal community structure of epilithic diatoms. Total diatom cell densities showed a significant negative correlation to stream bed light energy. Likewise, total diatom cell densities along a transect in the stream bed showed a negative correlation to current velocity during those months when base flow was low and stable, and current velocity was ≤25 cm·sec-1. Most diatom taxa had highest cell densities at temperatures < 16°C and at daily mean stream bed light levels < 400 μE·m?2·s?1. Highest cell densities of green algae occurred at temperatures between 6–16°C and at daily mean stream bed light levels of > 400 μE·m?2·s?1. Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) grew best at the highest recorded water temperatures and daily mean stream bed light energy (16–20°C and 900–1200 μE·m?2·s?1). Abrupt increases in NO3-N coincided with a brief pulse of Nostoc pruniforme colonies during June, and leaf drop from Alnus oblongifolia during October.  相似文献

The methodological standards of monitoring programs recommend collecting material from stones, but this community is often absent in slow-flowing waters, whereas a great number of localities do offer bryophytic material for sampling. In order to investigate whether the kind of substrate (epilithic or bryophytic) influences the diatom-based biomonitoring results the structure of diatom assemblages from 13 anthropogenically altered springs were investigated. To examine differences between diatom assemblages, the species richness of diatom assemblages, H′ (Shannon-Wiener diversity index), Trophic Diatom Index (TDI) and Specific Pollution sensitivity Index (SPI) were compared. The TDI and SPI differed significantly (P = 0.002 and P = 0.004) between springs located in villages and springs away from villages, and did not differ significantly between epilithic and bryophytic samples (P > 0.05). No significant differences in species richness or the diversity index (H′) (P > 0.05) were found between the epilithic and bryophytic diatom assemblages. This study suggests that both the kinds of substrates can be successfully used for diatom-based water-quality biomonitoring in mesotrophic and eutrophic environments.  相似文献

Implementation of the European Union Water Framework Directive and associated national guidelines has emphasized the value of using biota, such as epilithic diatoms in streams, as indicators of water quality. However, guidelines for evaluating diatom samples have been established without explicitly evaluating their statistical robustness. We used epilithic diatom samples from 73 streams in northern Sweden and simulated the effects of variations in the counting sum size and taxonomic resolution of classifications for two indices indicating pollution (Indice de Polluo-sensibilité Spécifique, IPS) and acidity (acidity index for diatoms, ACID). Instead of the stipulated 400, we found that a count sum of 40 diatom valves for 50 streams, and 80 valves for 60 streams, would have been sufficient to obtain the same IPS index classification. The ACID index is more sensitive to count sum reductions, since the same classification would only have been obtained for 12 streams with 40 counted diatom valves or 24 streams with a count of 80 valves. Excluding rare taxa had negligible effects on the IPS and ACID indices. Excluding taxa occurring with less than 1.0% frequency affected the IPS classification of only one stream, and excluding taxa with less than 2.5% and 5.0% frequencies affected those of just one and no streams, respectively. The ACID index was affected for none, five, and 12 streams, respectively. At least in relatively unpolluted regions such as northern Sweden, our simulations suggest that a simplified methodological approach with site-specific counting sum sizes and reduced taxonomical resolution could be adopted, taking into account the way sites are classified in relation to established class boundaries. The simplified method is a step forward in improving the cost efficiency for stream monitoring, as costs of diatom analysis to obtain identical IPS and ACID classifications of our streams could be reduced considerably. Before the simplified method can be widely adopted, further simulations including regions with a higher proportion of polluted streams are required.  相似文献

Seasonal studies of water bodies in separate branches of the Vistula River estuary in Northern Poland were conducted over 30 months from May 2005 to October 2007. Diatom samples were collected from different substrata from two sites located in the river mouth, which has physical characteristics as a result of a complex interplay of natural and human influences that have taken place over the last 100+ years. The diatom flora growing on hard surfaces near the river banks such as sand, muddy sand, rocks, macroscopic green algae and/or vascular aquatic plants was recorded. All diatom taxa collected were distinguished based on their morphological features using light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A total of 187 species belonging to 61 genera were identified. A canonical correspondence analysis indicated that the diatom assemblages were definitely associated with salinity as well as nutrient concentrations and substratum type. During the study, malformations of diatom valves were observed in 48% of the microphytobenthos samples. Abnormal outline morphology and ornamentation deformities in several individuals of nine different species were recorded, which were mainly in epilithic and epiphytic communities collected from spring to autumn.  相似文献

High‐quality calibration data sets are required when diatom assemblages are used for monitoring ecological change or reconstructing palaeo‐environments. The quality of such data sets can be validated, in addition to other criteria, by the percentage of significant unimodal species responses as a measure of the length of an environmental gradient. This study presents diatom‐environment relationships analyzed from a robust data set of diatom communities living on submerged stones along a 2,000 km long coastline in the Baltic Sea area, including 524 samples taken at 135 sites and covering a salinity gradient from 0.4 to 11.4. Altogether, 487 diatom taxa belonging to 102 genera were recorded. Detrended canonical correspondence analysis showed that salinity was the overriding environmental factor regulating diatom community composition, while exposure to wave action and nutrient concentrations were of secondary importance. Modeling the abundances of the 58 most common diatom taxa yielded significant relationships with salinity for 57 taxa. Twenty‐three taxa showing monotonic responses were species with optimum distributions in freshwater or marine waters. Thirty‐four taxa showing unimodal responses were brackish‐water species with maximum distributions at different salinities. Separate analyses for small (cell biovolume <1,000 μm3) and large (≥1,000 μm3) taxa yielded similar results. In previous studies along shorter salinity gradients, large and small epilithic diatom taxa responded differently. From our large data, we conclude that counts of large diatom taxa alone seem sufficient for indicating salinity changes in coastal environments with high precision.  相似文献

The effects of nutrient additions upon the epilithic diatom communities and the algal standing crop were investigated in the oligotrophic, softwater Lake Piccolo Naret, situated in the Swiss alps. Nutrient-diffusing flower pot substrates were filled with either N (0.15 mol NaNO3), P (0.015 mol Na2HPO4) or C (0.15 mol NaHCO3) or combinations of them. Twenty-five pots representing eight treatments were placed into the lake in July 1991 and sampled after 42 days of exposure.On the surfaces of all pots containing P we measured higher algal biomasses as on the control pots. The chlorophyll-a maximum of 12.9 µg cm– 2 was obtained on NPC pots (0.47 µg cm– 2 on control pots). On pots with P, NP or NPC supply high amounts of green algae were detected, also reflected in an increased chl-b/chl-c ratio related to the controls which showed algal communities dominated by diatoms.The diatom communities on the control pots as well as on the pots with N, P and NP had a structure similar to the epilithic community in Lake Piccolo Naret (dominance identity > 58 %). However, the community structures of the diatoms from pots with C addition (C, NC, PC and NPC) differed considerably. This is discussed in view of the cell densities of dominant diatom species. For further comparisons the results of two additional high-mountain lakes are used. By means of a cluster analysis it could be shown that epilithic diatom communities were considerably influenced by C addition, while N and P supply were of minor importance.  相似文献
