The ability to self in the absence of pollinators, i.e. reproductive assurance, and the detrimental consequences of inbreeding, i.e. inbreeding depression, are central factors influencing plant mating system evolution. The purpose of this study was to quantify whether self-fertility and inbreeding depression are related to levels of inbreeding in four Cyclamen species, namely C. balearicum (mean Fis = 0.930), C. creticum (mean Fis = 0.748), C. repandum (mean Fis = 0.658) and C. hederifolium (mean Fis = 0.329). C. balearicum showed a markedly greater capacity to autonomously self-fertilize than the three other species, which may have favoured inbreeding in this species. Levels of inbreeding depression were highest in C. creticum and C. hederifolium at the fruit maturation (δ = 0.18 and 0.20, respectively) and seed number (δ = 0.32 and 0.30, respectively) stages, and for C. repandum at the seed weight stage (δ = 0.23). Although C. balearicum showed inbreeding depression on seed germination (δ = 0.45), this may be an artefact of the generally low levels of seed germination in the experiment. Overall, we observed only limited evidence for the predicted negative relation between inbreeding coefficients and levels of inbreeding since C. creticum had high levels of inbreeding and inbreeding depression. Other factors may thus influence the relationship between inbreeding and inbreeding depression in these species.  相似文献

Relative pollen and ovule production in the genera of the legume tribeTrifolieae is explored particularly as to howMedicago with its explosive pollination mechanism compares with its allies.Medicago produces much larger, although much fewer pollen per ovule than the other five genera in the tribe; this is interpreted as a consequence of its highly specialized, irreversible pollination mechanism, which allows only one effective exchange of pollen with pollinators.Melilotus andTrifolium produce a comparatively large quantity of pollen; this can be related to their floral characteristics requiring abundant pollen to achieve fertilization. InMedicago andTrigonella, annuals convert a higher proportion of pollen grains and ovules into seeds than perennials.  相似文献

The Pedicularis species provides ideal materials to study floral evolution because of their substantial flower variation based on a narrow genetic basis, even though they are almost exclusively pollinated by bumblebee. These traits allow us to detect the evolutionary trends of floral parameters without considering genetic background and the difference of pollination vectors. The pollen-ovule ratio is widely used to estimate the pattern of resource investment in two sexual functions in flowering plants. Forty species representing all of the corolla types in Pedicularls were used to study pollen-ovule ratio, gamete investment, and their correlations. Results show that pollen-ovule ratio does not differ among both different corolla types and taxonomic groups. It is therefore suggested that pollen-ovule ratio should be a parallel evolution. The correlations between pollen-ovule ratio and pollen size (-), and ovule size (+) can be successfully explained in terms of sex allocation theory. The biological significance of such relationships was also discussed. Additionally, we analyzed the pattern of resource investment into female gamete, which has been somewhat neglected, and found that plants have different patterns of gamete investment between the two sexual functions.  相似文献

以浙江省蜡梅自然分布区的5个居群为研究对象,采用巢式方差分析、主成分分析、相关分析、聚类分析等多种分析方法,探究蜡梅花部的形态变异及其与环境因子相关性以及居群间和居群内的表型多样性。结果表明:蜡梅花部性状中除雄蕊长度、雌蕊数、雌蕊长度、内被片数以外,其他12个性状在居群间均有极显著差异。胚珠数的平均变异系数最大,花冠内径的平均变异系数最小,各性状的平均变异系数为15.03%(10.81%—23.38%)。五尖山的表型多样性最丰富,碧东山居群最小,种群间平均表型分化系数为44.38%(1.57%—89.62%),种群内变异大于种群间变异,种群内变异是花部变异的主要来源。主成分分析显示花冠直径、花冠内径、花筒深度和中被片长对种群变异起主要贡献作用。花部多数性状间存在显著或极显著的相关关系,生态因子中花部性状与土壤酸度相关性最大,土壤中花部性状与大量元素相关性最大,微量元素次之,中量元素最小。通过UPGMA聚类分析可以将5个种群分成两组。浙江省野生蜡梅花部形态存在丰富的变异和多样性,花部部分性状与土壤中钙、铁、铜含量和海拔有显著或极显著相关关系。  相似文献

Electrophoretically detectable genetic variation was used to describe the genetic structure of three South American species ofNothofagus: the widespreadN. betuloides andN. dombeyi, and the geographically restrictedN. nitida. Although the widespread species possess higher levels of genetic variation, the three species have more genetic variation within than among populations. These results are consistent with the theoretical expectations for woody, presumably highly outerossed species with wind-borne seeds.Estimates of outcrossing rates from progeny arrays yielded slightly higher average t-values forN. nitida (1.158) andN. dombeyi (range 0.873–1.045) than forN. betuloide (0.878). Hierarchical analysis of population structure revealed values of FIS and FIT that were positive and significantly different from zero at most loci and for each species. The levels of inbreeding detected by F-statistics indicate some degree of self-fertilization and/or population substructuring into discrete family groups. Reduced seed vagility and regeneration of natural stands after disturbance by a few remnant individuals would probably generate the recruitment of related seedlings underneath parent trees.The analysis of a putative hybrid population betweenN. nitida andN. betuloides indicated that individuals clearly segregated intonitida-like orbetuloides- like individuals. The reduced outcrossing rate ofbetuloides-like individuals from the hybrid site (t=0.585) is interpreted in concert with low pollen availability and the increased probability of selfing and/or hybridization inNothofagus.  相似文献

The genusScrophularia in the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands comprises two sections,Scrophularia andCanina G. Don. Analyses were carried out on flower production, flower duration and their sexual phases, pollen and nectar production together with observations on their pollinators. Nectar production is correlated with corolla size and pollen production with anther size. The taxa of sect.Scrophularia show greater nectar and pollen production than those of sect.Canina. Also, those of the first section produce more ovules per ovary than those of the second group, production being correlated with the ovary size.Some observations on floral and reproductive biology in some species ofScrophularia from the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Phenotypic and genetic variation and correlations among floral traits within and among four Primula species were measured to seek evidence for potential constraints on the independent evolution of floral characters, to examine the relationship between mating system, ploidy level, and sex allocation, and to determine whether some traits are more conservative than others within and across these congeners. We measured mean flower diameter, corolla depth, pollen production, modal pollen grain volume, ovule number per flower, and pollen: ovule ratios for 64 field-collected genotypes from northern Europe. These represented one heterostylous (P. farinosa: 2n = 18) and three homostylous (P. scotica: 2n = 54, P. scahdinavica: 2n = 74, and P. stricta: 2n ~ 126) species. All traits differed significantly among species and among the six taxon/morph categories identified (including three morphs of P. farinosa: pin, thrum, and homostylous). Pollen production per flower was significantly higher (and individual pollen grain volume lower) in the outcrossing P. farinosa than in any of the homostylous species; also, pin morphs produced significantly more pollen per flower than thrums in P. farinosa. Among the homostylous species, there were significant differences in all traits except modal pollen grain volume. Ovule number per flower and flower size were less variable among taxa than pollen production and pollen volume. Within species, there were several strong negative correlations among genets between pairs of traits, but each species exhibited a unique set of inverse relationships. We detected only one significant positive genetic correlation; in P. stricta, ovule number and pollen production per flower were positively correlated among genets. Among species means, two pairs of traits were negatively correlated: mean ovule number per flower vs. flower diameter (but P = 0.0587), and mean pollen production per flower vs. modal pollen grain volume. These negative correlations within and among taxa suggest that there may be intrinsic genetic constraints on the independent evolution of these floral characters, but that these constraints differ among species.  相似文献

Although theCyclamen subg.Cyclamen spp. are morphologically variable, previous studies suggest a superficial cytological uniformity. New chromosome numbers and an indication of karyotypic instability are reported inC. hederifolium andC. africanum that reveal that the cytology of the subgenus is more complicated than previous accounts suggest. The possible significance of these phenomena is discussed. The diploid status ofC. purpurascens has been confirmed and a distinction between the three diploid karyotypes has been described. The cytological variation may help to explain the well documented morphological variation exhibited in these species.  相似文献

Dynamic management of genetic resources inpredominantly inbreeding species requiresincreased levels of outcrossing to limit theloss of genetic variation due to smallereffective sizes and to favour the emergence ofnew genetic combinations. Here, we show thatoutcrossing rates can artificially bepermanently increased in experimental evolvingplant metapopulations, using Arabidopsisthaliana as a model. We introducedmale-sterility genes and used an adequatemanagement of the resulting female plants tomodify the outcrossing rates. As expected, theincrease in outcrossing resulted in lowerlevels of heterozygote deficiency (F is) than observed in natural populationsof A. thaliana and therefore in themaintenance of potentially higher levels ofgenetic variation. An additional selectiveadvantage for females' offspring, due to theproduction of larger seeds by females and apossible heterosis effect, furthermore led tosmaller F is than expected from therealized outcrossing rate. This selectiveadvantage also resulted in an increase infemale frequency, especially in metapopulationswith large population sizes, creating anon-causal negative correlation between femalefrequency and heterozygote deficiency.  相似文献

Current patterns of floral design in Pedicularis must have undergone an evolutionary process of interacting among components of floral traits, and then formed internal relationships among these traits. To detect such correlations, which may provide insight to understand flower evolution, 40 Pedicularis species representing all corolla types of the genus were studied. Results show that, interspecifically, pollen size correlates negatively with pollen number, but positively with pistil length. This suggests that plants evolve an optimal pollen size, which balances the advantages of large pollen size for gametophytic competition against the fecundity disadvantages of fewer pollen grains. In contrast to sex allocation theory, this study does not find a trade-off, but an interspecific positive correlation between pollen and ovule number. This is consistent with the hypothesis that genetic variation for resource acquisition may in part be responsible for the lack of negative correlation between male and female function.This work was supported by the State Key Basic Research and Development Plan, China (Grant No. G2000046804) to YHG. Although intraspecific variation in plant floral traits has been documented for a number of plant species, the causes of such variation are largely unknown. We first quantified floral trait variation in an Illinois prairie population of Chamaecrista fasciculata Michx. We then used a field experiment to determine the contribution of leaf herbivory to this variation and a greenhouse experiment to determine the contribution of leaf herbivory, and variable soil nutrient and water content to floral trait variation. Variation in environmental factors explained a significant portion of the naturally occurring variation in corolla width, ovule number, ovule size, and anther length. In the field, manual removal of 25% or more leaf area reduced ovule size and anther length (and by inference, pollen production), and delayed flowering. In the greenhouse, plants from which we removed 25% or more of their leaf area or which were given limited water produced fewer ovules than control plants. Addition of nutrients interacted with soil moisture to affect corolla diameter and ovule number. Despite our demonstration of significant environmental impacts on reproductive traits, these impacts were relatively much smaller than those on plant size, suggesting that floral traits are buffered against variable resource availability.  相似文献

Summary Somatic hybrid plants were regenerated following calcium-high pH fusion of the unidirectional, sexually incompatible cross of Petunia parodii wild-type leaf mesophyll protoplasts with protoplasts from a cytoplasmic determined chlorophyll-deficient mutant of P. inflata. Genic complementation to chlorophyll synthesis and sustained growth in the selective medium was used to visually identify hybrid calluses. Hybrid calluses were subsequently regenerated to shoots, rooted, and confirmed as somatic hybrids by their intermediate floral and leaf morphology based on comparison to the 2 n = 4 x = 28 sexual counterpart, dominant anthocyanin expression in the corolla, chromosome number, and peroxidase and maleic dehydrogenase isozyme patterns. Certain cytologically stable somatic hybrids displayed aberrant reproductive and floral morphologies including subtle to moderate corolla and leaf pigment variegation, floral dimension changes and reduced pollen viability. In contrast, cytologically unstable somatic hybrids showed various degrees of aneuploidy coupled with corolla splitting, and irregularities in reproductive organs such as double stigmas and styles in addition to reduced pollen viability. Postulated mechanisms to account for these phenotypic changes in stable and unstable somatic hybrids include nuclear-cytoplasmic genomic incompatibility, chromosome loss in a biparental cytoplasm, or a phenomenon similar to hybrid dysgenesis occurring as a result of somatic fusion.Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station Journal Article No. 11376. The pollination biology of Omphalogramma souliei Franch., a species endemic to southwestern China, was investigated. Floral phenology, flower visitors, pollen/ovule ratio, attractants and rewards to the visitors were observed, measured, and recorded. Bagging experiments to exclude pollinators were carried out in the wild for two years. Our results revealed five important aspects of the reproductive biology of Omphalogramma souliei. 1) The pollen-ovule ratio was 1748±233. The breeding system was self-compatible, with facultative xenogamy. 2) The pollination syndrome is entomophily, and this species could not be pollinated by wind if the pollinators were unavailable. 3) Six insect species were observed visiting the flowers of Omphalogramma souliei in the wild, of them, three species of hymenoptera, Lasioglossum sp., Heriades parvula Cockerell and Micrapis florae Fabricius, are the principal floral visitors and effective pollinators. 4) The visual attractants to the visitors are floral color and shape, the large yellow anthers, and the rewards for visitors are pollen and nectar. 5) Cleistogamy may also occur, since the anthers of some flowers dehisced before opening of the corolla. The results of floral biology and pollination characters suggest that xenogamy predominated and autogamy played an assistant role in the evolution of reproduction and breeding system of O. souliei.  相似文献

The size and number of pollen grains and ovules are compared between 20 populations of different ploidy levels in two self-incompatible species ofCorydalis (Fumariaceae), to test the presence of ploidy-related variation in these reproductive characters. In both species, higher ploidy levels are associated with larger pollen grains, ovules and corolla, but the number of pollen grains and ovules are not different between ploidy levels. The investment per flower is consequently larger at higher ploidy levels, but the flower number per individual is lower, suggesting that the mode of partition of the investment for sexual reproduction varies between different ploidy levels. InC. orthoceras, sex allocation estimated by pollen:ovule ratios in number and volume is more female-biased in polyploids than in diploids. In spite of these variations, the characters studied can not be used as indicators of ploidy level due to the large overlaps between the ploidy levels.  相似文献

Before novel transgenic plant genotypes are grown outside containment facilities and evaluated under field conditions, it is necessary to complete a risk assessment to consider the possible consequences of that release. An important aspect of risk assessment is to consider the likelihood and consequences of the transgene being transferred by cross-pollination to related species, including other crops, weeds and ruderal populations. The purpose of this report is to review the literature to assess the ease with whichBrassica napus can hybridize with related species. The evidence for hybridization is considered at three levels: a) by open pollination, b) by hand pollination and c) by the use ofin vitro ovule and embryo rescue techniques; and also examines the fertility and vigour of the F1, F2 and backcross generations. Four species are reported to hybridize withB. napus by open pollination:B. rapa andB. juncea using fully fertile parents; andB. adpressa andR. raphanistrum using a male-sterileB. napus parent. Seventeen species are reported to form hybrids (including the four species above) withB. napus when pollination is carried out manually. At least 12 of these species were unable to form F2 progeny, and eight were unable to produce progeny when the F1 was backcrossed to one of the parental species. Many factors will influence the success of hybridization under field conditions, including: distance between the parents, synchrony of flowering, method of pollen spread, specific parental genotypes used, direction of the cross and the environmental conditions. Even where there is a possibility of hybridization betweenB. napus and a related species growing in the vicinity of a release, poor vigour and high sterility in the hybrids will generally mean that hybrids and their progeny will not survive in either an agricultural or natural habitat.  相似文献

The reproductive system ofProsopis chilensis, P. pugionata, P. flexuosa, andP. torquata is described. Observations were made of floral morphology, stigmatic receptivity, pollen grain viability, and the nature of pollen reserves. Scanning electrone microscopy and statistical analysis were carried out. The results allow us to conclude that: 1) The studied species have three distinct floral morphs characterized by significantly different style lengths and, to a lesser extent, different stamen lengths; 2) style precocity found in all species does not indicate protogyny; 3) flowers with shortest styles are not receptive; 4) the pollen grains of all floral morphs showed high viability; 5) peroxidase is present in both the pollen and pistil; 6) viable pollen grains invariably have both starch and pollenkitt; 7) the studied species are andromonoecious.  相似文献

The partitioning of genetic variability within and between twelve British populations of the anemophilous aquaticPotamogeton coloratus Hornem. was investigated by isozyme analysis. Low levels of variability as measured by P, A and H were found. Calculation of Wright's F statistics revealed a high mean value of the overall inbreeding coefficient, (FIT = 0.939), which was attributed both to high levels of genetic subdivision among populations (mean FST = 0.702) and to a high frequency of inbreeding or clonal growth within them (mean FIS = 0.796). Only two populations are polymorphic; both inhabit sites with a long post-glacial history as wetlands. Populations of recent origin, as well as some of older vintage, contain only a single multi-locus isozyme genotype, homozygous at all loci except for IDH. A genetic bottleneck following the Devensian glaciation is discussed as a possible cause of the pattern of variation. Evidence for a duplicated IDH locus is presented.  相似文献

Floral evolution in the tribeVeroniceae was examined using phylogenetic analysis combining 24 adult morphology and chromosome number characters with 22 qualitative and quantitative floral development characters. Taxa sampled included nine species ofVeroniceae and as an outgroup one species each ofDigitaleae andVerbasceae. Veronica, Besseya, andSynthyris formed one clade, subtended byPseudolysimachion and then by theHebe group;Veronicastrum orWulfenia represent the basal-most branch of the tribe. The ancestral flowers of theVeroniceae may have been small with moderately short corolla tubes and lobes; long corolla tubes arose four times in the tribe and large corolla lobes twice.  相似文献

The pollination biology, breeding system and fruiting success ofCaesalpinia calycina andC. pluviosa var.sanfranciscana were studied in caatinga vegetation in Bahia, NE Brazil. The principal pollinators for both species were carpenter bees.Caesalpinia calycina is andromonoecious but inC. pluviosa all flowers are hermaphrodite. InC. calycina all selfed flowers were abscised within 72 h despite rapid self-pollen tube growth to the ovary and ovule penetration. Prevention of selfing therefore seems to be controlled by a post-zygotic mechanism. Both species had very low fruit-set and it is suggested that this is at least in part due to geitonogamous pollinations with ovule penetration by self pollen tubes.  相似文献

瑞香属植物具有重要的药用和观赏价值,在中国资源丰富,但自然条件下低坐果率限制了该属植物的进一步开发和利用。该研究以橙花瑞香为对象,通过对其有性繁殖及传粉特性的研究,探索其自然坐果率低的原因,内容包括花部特征的测量分析,MTT染色法测定花粉活性,联苯胺-过氧化氢法测定柱头可授性,扫描电镜观察柱头、花粉的形态,传粉者观察,通过花粉胚珠比(P/O)和人工授粉实验推测橙花瑞香的繁育系统类型。结果表明:橙花瑞香的花部结构特殊,管状小花,花药两轮,雌雄蕊分离。花开后的花粉具有活性,柱头具有可授性,扫描电镜下,柱头和花粉的结构没有发育异常,且柱头上有花粉落置。橙花瑞香的传粉者主要是夜间访花的蛾类,访花频率低。P/O及人工授粉实验表明橙花瑞香的繁育系统为专性异交。橙花瑞香的坐果率非常低,自然坐果率为1.4%,人工异花授粉为23.3%,低坐果率可能是受其开花量大、异花花粉限制、资源限制以及花部结构等因素的影响。  相似文献
