The study of evolutionary dynamics on graphs is an interesting topic for researchers in various fields of science and mathematics. In systems with finite population, different model dynamics are distinguished by their effects on two important quantities: fixation probability and fixation time. The isothermal theorem declares that the fixation probability is the same for a wide range of graphs and it only depends on the population size. This has also been proved for more complex graphs that are called complex networks. In this work, we propose a model that couples the population dynamics to the network structure and show that in this case, the isothermal theorem is being violated. In our model the death rate of a mutant depends on its number of neighbors, and neutral drift holds only in the average. We investigate the fixation probability behavior in terms of the complexity parameter, such as the scale-free exponent for the scale-free network and the rewiring probability for the small-world network.  相似文献

The analysis of cortical and subcortical networks requires the identification of their nodes, and of the topology and dynamics of their interactions. Exploratory tools for the identification of nodes are available, e.g. magnetoencephalography (MEG) in combination with beamformer source analysis. Competing network topologies and interaction models can be investigated using dynamic causal modelling. However, we lack a method for the exploratory investigation of network topologies to choose from the very large number of possible network graphs. Ideally, this method should not require a pre-specified model of the interaction. Transfer entropy--an information theoretic implementation of Wiener-type causality--is a method for the investigation of causal interactions (or information flow) that is independent of a pre-specified interaction model. We analysed MEG data from an auditory short-term memory experiment to assess whether the reconfiguration of networks implied in this task can be detected using transfer entropy. Transfer entropy analysis of MEG source-level signals detected changes in the network between the different task types. These changes prominently involved the left temporal pole and cerebellum--structures that have previously been implied in auditory short-term or working memory. Thus, the analysis of information flow with transfer entropy at the source-level may be used to derive hypotheses for further model-based testing.  相似文献

Diverse families of molecular chaperones cooperate to effect protein homeostasis, but the extent and dynamics of direct interactions among chaperone systems within cells remain little studied. Here we used fluorescence resonance energy transfer to systematically map the network of pairwise interactions among the major Escherichia coli chaperones. We demonstrate that in most cases functional cooperation between chaperones within and across families involves physical complex formation, which pre-exists even in the absence of folding substrates. The observed connectivity of the overall chaperone network confirms its partitioning into sub-networks that are responsible for de novo protein folding and maturation and for refolding/disaggregation of misfolded proteins, respectively, and are linked by the Hsp70 system. We further followed heat-induced changes in the cellular chaperone network, revealing two distinct pathways that process heat-denatured substrates. Our data suggest that protein folding within cells relies on highly ordered and direct channelling of substrates between chaperone systems and provide a comprehensive view of the underlying interactions and of their dynamics.  相似文献

In this paper, we show how to detect cellular rhythm and its global stability by extending the techniques from the recently developed theory of monotone systems. We establish theoretical results for globally asymptotic stability with consideration of delay by a discrete map. The relationship between positive, negative elements and delay in a general class of interlocked feedback networks can be understood in a system level. Moreover, the correspondence of attractors between a network and its reduced map is obtained and can be used to detect cellular rhythm, and further control the dynamics of the network. We show that global cellular rhythms can always be obtained, thereby enhancing robustness against perturbations of initial conditions and avoiding chaotic oscillations or complete abolishment of oscillations. In this paper, we focus on analyzing the circadian oscillator in Drosophila as an example to detect the occurrence of cellular rhythm and its global stability.  相似文献

We asked how team dynamics can be captured in relation to function by considering games in the first round of the NBA 2010 play-offs as networks. Defining players as nodes and ball movements as links, we analyzed the network properties of degree centrality, clustering, entropy and flow centrality across teams and positions, to characterize the game from a network perspective and to determine whether we can assess differences in team offensive strategy by their network properties. The compiled network structure across teams reflected a fundamental attribute of basketball strategy. They primarily showed a centralized ball distribution pattern with the point guard in a leadership role. However, individual play-off teams showed variation in their relative involvement of other players/positions in ball distribution, reflected quantitatively by differences in clustering and degree centrality. We also characterized two potential alternate offensive strategies by associated variation in network structure: (1) whether teams consistently moved the ball towards their shooting specialists, measured as “uphill/downhill” flux, and (2) whether they distributed the ball in a way that reduced predictability, measured as team entropy. These network metrics quantified different aspects of team strategy, with no single metric wholly predictive of success. However, in the context of the 2010 play-offs, the values of clustering (connectedness across players) and network entropy (unpredictability of ball movement) had the most consistent association with team advancement. Our analyses demonstrate the utility of network approaches in quantifying team strategy and show that testable hypotheses can be evaluated using this approach. These analyses also highlight the richness of basketball networks as a dataset for exploring the relationships between network structure and dynamics with team organization and effectiveness.  相似文献

In this article, we tackle a challenging problem in quantitative graph theory. We establish relations between graph entropy measures representing the structural information content of networks. In particular, we prove formal relations between quantitative network measures based on Shannon's entropy to study the relatedness of those measures. In order to establish such information inequalities for graphs, we focus on graph entropy measures based on information functionals. To prove such relations, we use known graph classes whose instances have been proven useful in various scientific areas. Our results extend the foregoing work on information inequalities for graphs.  相似文献

Background

Models for the production of knowledge and systems of innovation and science are key elements for characterizing a country in view of its scientific thematic profile. With regard to scientific output and publication in journals of international visibility, the countries of the world may be classified into three main groups according to their thematic bias.

Methodology/Principal Findings

This paper aims to classify the countries of the world in several broad groups, described in terms of behavioural models that attempt to sum up the characteristics of their systems of knowledge and innovation. We perceive three clusters in our analysis: 1) the biomedical cluster, 2) the basic science & engineering cluster, and 3) the agricultural cluster. The countries are conceptually associated with the clusters via Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and a Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) map with all the countries is presented.

Conclusions/Significance

As we have seen, insofar as scientific output and publication in journals of international visibility is concerned, the countries of the world may be classified into three main groups according to their thematic profile. These groups can be described in terms of behavioral models that attempt to sum up the characteristics of their systems of knowledge and innovation.  相似文献

The cortex exhibits an intricate vertical and horizontal architecture, the latter often featuring spatially clustered projection patterns, so-called patches. Many network studies of cortical dynamics ignore such spatial structures and assume purely random wiring. Here, we focus on non-random network structures provided by long-range horizontal (patchy) connections that remain inside the gray matter. We investigate how the spatial arrangement of patchy projections influences global network topology and predict its impact on the activity dynamics of the network. Since neuroanatomical data on horizontal projections is rather sparse, we suggest and compare four candidate scenarios of how patchy connections may be established. To identify a set of characteristic network properties that enables us to pin down the differences between the resulting network models, we employ the framework of stochastic graph theory. We find that patchy projections provide an exceptionally efficient way of wiring, as the resulting networks tend to exhibit small-world properties with significantly reduced wiring costs. Furthermore, the eigenvalue spectra, as well as the structure of common in- and output of the networks suggest that different spatial connectivity patterns support distinct types of activity propagation.  相似文献

Nature, technology and society are full of complexity arising from the intricate web of the interactions among the units of the related systems (e.g., proteins, computers, people). Consequently, one of the most successful recent approaches to capturing the fundamental features of the structure and dynamics of complex systems has been the investigation of the networks associated with the above units (nodes) together with their relations (edges). Most complex systems have an inherently hierarchical organization and, correspondingly, the networks behind them also exhibit hierarchical features. Indeed, several papers have been devoted to describing this essential aspect of networks, however, without resulting in a widely accepted, converging concept concerning the quantitative characterization of the level of their hierarchy. Here we develop an approach and propose a quantity (measure) which is simple enough to be widely applicable, reveals a number of universal features of the organization of real-world networks and, as we demonstrate, is capable of capturing the essential features of the structure and the degree of hierarchy in a complex network. The measure we introduce is based on a generalization of the m-reach centrality, which we first extend to directed/partially directed graphs. Then, we define the global reaching centrality (GRC), which is the difference between the maximum and the average value of the generalized reach centralities over the network. We investigate the behavior of the GRC considering both a synthetic model with an adjustable level of hierarchy and real networks. Results for real networks show that our hierarchy measure is related to the controllability of the given system. We also propose a visualization procedure for large complex networks that can be used to obtain an overall qualitative picture about the nature of their hierarchical structure.  相似文献

A challenge for physiologists and neuroscientists is to map information transfer between components of the systems that they study at different scales, in order to derive important knowledge on structure and function from the analysis of the recorded dynamics. The components of physiological networks often interact in a nonlinear way and through mechanisms which are in general not completely known. It is then safer that the method of choice for analyzing these interactions does not rely on any model or assumption on the nature of the data and their interactions. Transfer entropy has emerged as a powerful tool to quantify directed dynamical interactions. In this paper we compare different approaches to evaluate transfer entropy, some of them already proposed, some novel, and present their implementation in a freeware MATLAB toolbox. Applications to simulated and real data are presented.  相似文献

Real-world complex systems may be mathematically modeled as graphs, revealing properties of the system. Here we study graphs of functional brain organization in healthy adults using resting state functional connectivity MRI. We propose two novel brain-wide graphs, one of 264 putative functional areas, the other a modification of voxelwise networks that eliminates potentially artificial short-distance relationships. These graphs contain many subgraphs in good agreement with known functional brain systems. Other subgraphs lack established functional identities; we suggest possible functional characteristics for these subgraphs. Further, graph measures of the areal network indicate that the default mode subgraph shares network properties with sensory and motor subgraphs: it is internally integrated but isolated from other subgraphs, much like a "processing" system. The modified voxelwise graph also reveals spatial motifs in the patterning of systems across the cortex.  相似文献
